Biden to press: 'Fact check me'

ZANESVILLE, OH -- The meta-fact check war rages on.

As the campaigns continued to trade salvos over the accuracy of claims made in both parties' convention speeches, Vice President Joe Biden said on Saturday that he's happy to be under the microscope of fact checkers.

Carolyn Kaster / AP

Vice President Joe Biden talks with Lisa McIntosh of Lewisburg, Ohio, as he stops for an ice cream cone Saturday at a Dairy Queen in Nelsonville, Ohio.

"I say to the press, 'Fact check me,'" the vice president declared before launching into a lengthy critique of the Republican plan for Medicare overhaul.

"What they're proposing will actually cost the Medicare trust fund that pays for the benefits when you go to the hospital, the doctor, to run out of money, a sufficient amount of money by 2016," he said. "That's when it would hit the wall."

Biden's claim echoes one made Wednesday night by former President Bill Clinton, who said that the Romney-Ryan goal of repealing the Affordable Care Act would eliminate that bill's measures to keep Medicare solvent until 2024, pushing the date when Medicare will "go broke" up by 8 years.

The non-partisan factcheck.org found that to be an exaggeration; while repeal of ACA would mean the earlier exhaustion of the part of Medicare that covers hospitals, the fund would still collect payroll taxes to cover the vast majority of hospital bills.

The Washington Post put it more bluntly: "This is wrong," it wrote on Sept. 6 of Biden's 2016 Medicare solvency claim.

On Saturday, Biden also accused Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryanof proposing to turn the federal health insurance program for seniors into "Vouchercare," saying that the Romney-Ryan plan would raise costs for seniors.

Independent fact checkers have pointed out that while Ryan's most recent budget would provide private insurance vouchers which would grow at the rate of inflation rather than at the rate of health costs, it would also keep traditional Medicare as an option for seniors who wanted it. While most agree that it's likely that seniors would have to pay more if they chose Medicare, it's hard to project how health care costs would change under a hypothetical Romney-Ryan plan.

"Today, Vice President Biden said that he should be fact-checked, and we agree," said Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg. "The vice president knowingly and deliberately leveled false and discredited attacks."

The fact check challenge comes after a Romney pollster was quoted saying that "we're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers." Paul Ryan's convention speech was heavily criticized for citing several discredited claims.

Biden poked fun at that sentiment Saturday, calling it "amazing" that the Romney campaign "doesn't like to be fact checked."

Addressing the crowd of about 450 at an Ohio elementary school, Biden also needled Republicans for their impassioned support for Medicare.

"If … you got dropped down from Mars and turned on the convention, you'd think that they really cared about it. You'd think it's something they thought of," Biden said of Republicans.

“They mention it so often you'd be surprised to learn that they've always been trying to chip away [from it] for the last 40 years," he added.

Another fact check? You can't survive on Mars.

The members of R.E.M. have blasted editors at FOX News network for using the band's hit song "Losing My Religion" during its coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night.

Bing: R.E.M. disband

Bosses behind the TV channel have been sent a cease-and-desist letter from executives at publishing house Warner-Tamerlane Music, accusing them of failing to obtain permission to play the popular 1991 track while reporting from the Charlotte, N.C., event.

Singer Michael Stipe, 52, has spoken out to condemn FOX News and its journalistic ethics in the wake of the controversy. In a statement on the band's official website, he says, "We have little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage. Our music does not belong there."

Since, Ryan is a much better liar than Biden, there is no chance for Romney/Ryan to win the election based on telling the truth

It is not necessary to "fact check" biden. He will just come up with the excuse "I am suffering from Alzheimer with double dementia," or "Are your serious, did I say that???"

Did the fact checkers get the facts right? If ACA uses over 700 B to more or less add to medicare and the R/Ryan team want to still cut it buy move it over for tax cuts, won't that lessen the amount of years it is solvent. Besides R/Ryan want to end it so the worse they can make it the better for their plans. I would go to task with the factcheckers on that or whoever is reporting the factcheckers. I guess we need to check that first don't we?

Joe Biden is the biggest Phuking idiot to ever be elect to office. He was an idiot when he was a senator for Delaware, and he's only gotten worse. He's also one of the biggest liers on the planet. Hey dumazz, they already did fact check you on your convention speech and most of it was flat out lies! At least in 2 months we will no longer have to put up with your stupidity!!!

usaf50 - i think you're right. for me, i was a liberal when i was in college but, after i entered the work force and started to make a few bucks i changed my mind. seeing what happened in and around me in Detroit convinced me that entitlements were out of control and unions had risen to ridiculous levels of power. at the height of the economy in the 90's, able bodied people sat around because they could - it was pathetic. furthermore, if you really want to see where you stand politically, ask your self three questions:

                1. how do you feel about taxes?

                2. how do you feel about abortion?

                3. how do you feel about gun control?

after you answer these, you'll pretty much know where you really are politically...

and, as to our current state of affairs i think John Adams summed it up a long time ago:

'There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword, the other by debt' John Adams, 1826

Here's really the only "fact check" that matters:
Obama promised to cut the federal deficit in half. Nope, didn't happen.

Obama promised that if his $1 trillion boondoggle stimulus plan was passed that unemployment wouldn't go above 8% and would be around 5% by this time. Nope. 43 months of above 8% unemployment.

Obama promised this same reckless stimulus plan would create millions of jobs. Nope. Those shovel ready projects "weren't quite as shovel ready as he thought...yuk, yuk, yuk."

Obama promised to be an inclusive president. I think that ended in the first few weeks when he told Eric Cantor, who was trying to give him some ideas to help the economy "Elections matter. And Eric, I won". Or maybe when he claimed the Boston police "acted stupidly" before he even knew the facts.

I could go on and on.

He came, he tried, HE FAILED.

                  Next!!!

"...He came, he tried, HE FAILED..." -- Yeah, that's what McConnell yelled out shortly before Obama was sworn in. He was referring to BOTH Bush and Obama. The only difference is that he talked about Bush in the past tense, and he talked about Obama as the slogan for the gold-plated platform of the GOP for the next 4 years.

                      • I don't know how you libs just blindly follow these loosers

Last month, 380,000 American's mysteriously became classified by
Obama's Department of Labor as no longer participating in the workforce -- Or those whom have given up on finding a job... Think about that!

How does the Dept. of Labor know that someone has given up on working? They don't! The benefit to Obama is that although his jobs creation programs are anemic, by reducing the amount of workforce participants, the unemployment number dropped from 8.3 to 8.1%. This has been going on since Obama took office!!! So far since Obama took office, the Obama Administration has determined that over 9 million Americans have simply given up looking for jobs... Figure that one out! When we pierce through this statistical smoke and mirrors and factor back in those 9 million jobless whom the government has defined out of existence, then the true unemployment rate is 19.9% and rising, and not 8.3% and falling.

Hell, at the beginning of 2012 was one of the worst months in US
history, with a total of 2.3 million people losing jobs or leaving the
workforce in a single month. Yet, the official unemployment rate showed a decline from 8.5% to 8.3% in January - and was such cheering news that it set off a stock rally. How can there be such a stark contrast between the cheerful surface and an underlying reality that is getting worse?

Unemployment didn't drop from 8.3% to 8.1% in August as Obama and Biden have been bragging. The just cooked the numbers... Evidence? Use your common sense! Do you really believe that 9 million Americans have actually left the workforce and decided not to look for jobs any longer?

Now, please, one certainly couldn't draw the conclusion that ABC is pro-Obama, and anti-American, or could they???

What the hell is happening to this once great country. The liberal policy to gut our education system and dumb down America, is sure as hell working.

One only had to watch the DNC convention for proof of that. Libbies came out of there totally neutered. The voice vote was a farce. Debbie Wasserman-craps caught red-handed lying, Slick Willy trying hard to hide Monica under the podium, and libbie women slobber all over him, yet criticize the GOP for being anti-woman.

At the time of Monica, I asked several Democratic women what they thought of Slick Willy. "Best president we ever had!" was the reply.

                              Is a good plumber?

                              Yes, he's the best.

Well then, if he comes home and tells you he got a BJ...is that ok??

No way...that's a totally different situation.

Biden is the Agnew of the democrats. Reality is that President Obama will be re-elected with a republican congress and a slim majority in the senate. After 6 billion dollars, nothing will have changed. Obama lost my support when he did not end the war in Afghanistan like he pledged to in 2008. He had a majority in the house and senate and wasted it.
