In Cleveland, President Barack Obama claimed he created more private-sector jobs in the past 27 months than President George W. Bush created “during the entire seven years before this crisis.” But that’s like comparing apples and mangoes. The president is absolving himself of responsibility for the savage recession he inherited, while assigning to Bush responsibility for the recession that began within weeks of his taking office in 2001.

The fact is, the economy has gained just about the same number of private-sector jobs (Obama’s preferred measure) in the 27 months since the most recent job slump hit bottom as it did in the 27 months following the bottom of the first Bush slump. And looking at total jobs — the broader and more customary measure — Bush’s post-slump job creation record was significantly better than Obama’s.

So, the president is correct about the number of jobs created in the last 27 months.

But then he uses an economic sleight of hand when he compares his best 27-month period with the first seven years of President Bush, ignoring the fact that Bush inherited an economy on the brink of a recession.

Soon after Bush took office, the U.S. economy officially fell into a recession — which lasted from March 2001 to November 2001, as measured by the National Bureau of Economic Research. There is always a lag in job growth after a recession officially ends, and the low point for private-sector employment was not reached until July 2003, when it fell to 108,232,000. By October 2005, which would be 27 months after the job slump ended, the U.S. had 112,491,000 jobs — an increase of 4,259,000 jobs. That’s nearly identical to Obama’s best 27 months after the recession.

Republican leaders are the ones who see potential for profit by sheering us of our wool. The trouble is that this election we have not had time to grow our wool back. • General Motors Is Headed For Bankruptcy -- Again

President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That’s good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market
share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market.

Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unrealized loss of $16.4 billion.

Right now, the government’s GM stock is worth about 39% less than it was on November 17, 2010, when the company went public at $33.00/share. However, during the intervening time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen by almost 20%, so GM shares have lost 49% of their value relative to the Dow.

It’s doubtful that the Obama administration would attempt to sell off the government’s massive position in GM while the stock price is falling. It would be too embarrassing politically. Accordingly, if GM shares continue to decline, it is likely that Obama would ride the stock down to zero.

GM is unlikely to hit the wall before the election, but, given current trends, the company could easily do so again before the end of a second Obama term.

In the 1960s, GM averaged a 48.3% share of the U.S. car and truck market. For the first 7 months of 2012, their market share was 18.0%, down from 20.0% for the same period in 2011. With a loss of market share comes a loss of relative cost-competitiveness. There is only so much market share that GM can lose before it would no longer have the resources to attempt to recover.

Put down very little of his own money, then load the company with debt and get paid huge amounts of money for "consulting fees".. Because of the artificially low taxes at the top, they are taking their record profits out of their businesses as personal income and stashing it into the Cayman Islands (just like Romney). So if and when it's really time to expand, the money won't be there.

Like I've said a million times... the economy will be flat through the election. It will rise after the election no matter who is elected, but it will depend mostly on new profits, if they exist. Ryan has some nerve. I don't recall Republicans pushing any crucial legislation to help the unemployed these past years -- except for their beloved "trade deals." In fact, they seemed focused on MALIGNING the unemployed and supporting governors who accused the unemployed of being drug users who should be urine tested to receive unemployment benefits. While Americans were suffering and running through their savings, Republicans pushed reforming Entitlements which they transformed into some kind of welfare.

To be honest, I think everyone in Washington failed the people in this country. They are all too beholden to their Donors to the detriment of Human Beings. Congressional Representatives & Senators didn't suffer the decline in their household wealth like the rest of the country. While the American people saw their assets tanking, Congress actually increased its wealth overall. Now how did that happen?

I'm tired of the campaign speeches and spin. Let us look at the truth. The Obama administration's solution to our unemployment problem has been the stimulus bill that congress did pass. President Obama called it a spending bill. The Obama administration produced a report that they used to help sell the stimulus. The report included a chart that showed what the stimulus was suppose to accomplish regarding unemployment. Using the data from that report, one must conclude that the stimulus failed to do what it was suppose to do. If the stimulus had worked, unemployment would now be less than 6%. According to that Obama administration report, unemployment has been a little worse than if there had been no stimulus at all. One must conclude that the stimulus has been less then effective in fixing the unemployment problem. The President said that jobs was his first priority but his just saying that has not improved the situation. The President then came up with a second stimulus that would have looked like half of the first stimulus. The second stimulus did not really contain any new ideas and congress was not impressed. The administration has been so desperate for new job creating ideas that they have even sent me emails asking for help. In the President's nomination acceptance speech, the President was suppose to present a new plan to fix the economy. The President mentioned some goals but no detailed plan as to how to achieve them. The President's plan presented in that speech depends on hope and change. The President hopes that things will change. Change to what remains undefined. The President hopes that the troops will come home in 2014 and by 2015 the federal government will start running a surplus and start paying down the debt. But the President's White House has predicted huge deficits for at least another decade. What ever the President's new economic program really is, his own White House is not on board with it. Like the President, I wish that people could use ideas of hope and change to pay their bills but that is not happening.

You do know that the President actually works and has a higher approval rating than Congress? Did that thought escape you????

By law, the President is required to keep campaign activities funded separately from his general duties. They cannot be funded by the federal government unless they accept only federal election funds. He has not campaigned on the taxpayer dime anymore than any other President seeking re-election before him has. Rep. Ryan is required to follow the same federal regulations and laws.

Please consider that courtesy to others is representative of strength, not weakness. So I would hope that posters that verbally abuse others would remember that the their ugliness and attempts to shut down others by shouting "STFU", or other things actually weaken their position as well as demonstrate their inability to debate their position in a rational manner.

After being passed by the house bills go to the Senate where (If they are allowed onto the floor for debate) they can be discussed, and subsequently ammended, or changed (This is called "Recommiting"). They are then returned to the house for more debate, or a vote. If agrreement still cannot be reached they are reconciled in a conference committee. This is an ad hoc committee that includes both senators and representatives; untill something is produced that EVERYBODY can live with. Then a vote is taken, and the bill is either passed or trashed. The process is called BARGAINING, and resolution is achieved through COMPROMISE. But we can never reach that point if someone (In this case Harry Reid) won't allow the bill onto the floor of the Senate for debate. Can we? So Nero fiddles while Rome burns,

The "Recommitting", and "Conference Committee" processes are the Democrats opportunity to remove things they don't like, and insert things they do like. If they choose not to avail themselves of this opportunity we can only assume that their primary purpose is obstruction.

If the Democrats allowed those bills onto the floor for debate, bargaining, and compromise and the Republicans didn't cooperate THEN the Democrats could run around saying that the Republicans were "Obstructing" the legislative process, and it would be true. But that is NOT what is happening. Is it?

Uninsured Seniors aren't really a problem. In reality, there are 45.7 million uninsured people, and 41.5 million of them are under the age of 65. Uninsured Seniors, meaning those who are 65 or older, only account for about 9% of the total unisured. Although taking care of Seniors is foremost, the biggest gap of people without health insurance are between the ages of 19 - 25 years. Given this, I believe that Romney and Ryan are asking that of Seniors at all. This is simply more Dem-wit rhetoric. Man, you guys will say anything!

You will be in for a rude awakening of the cost of care.

Right now, my own mother is in assisted living. Right now she is paying about $3800 out of pocket because she only needs help with medications. Medicaid only help with "skilled nursing", medicare doesn't help with assisted living. That's $45,600/yr out of pocket. Quite a bit of money when you're 83.

As she requires more care, is could go up to $5,000/mo - again without her qualifying for any assistance from Medicaid because it's not skilled nursing or a nursing home. That's $60,000/yr out of pocket.

These are not fabricated costs. The hardest part for people to wrap their minds around are that these costs are REAL. Facilities actually with a straight face tell you that their rents are $4,600/mo for a "private" room and bath and tiny kitchenette.

The Romney/Ryan plan will bankrupt Medicare by 2016 - Look it up, it's FACT.

Bankrupt is Bankrupt. EVERYONE will be affected. No matter if your are currently on Medicare or will be.

Medicaid will be dramatically de-funded. Look it up. It's fact.

That's why everyone needs to seriously think about how they will be able to afford their own care when they get old.

He has no plans. If he did, they'd be in the works by now. He failed at stabilizing an ailing real estate market. He blew his wad on healthcare reform instead of creating private sector jobs and a better stimulus package, and he has no clue how to bail us out. His understanding of economics is shaky at best. It's easy to blame the Republicans, but keep in mind that the Democrats owned the House and Senate his first two years in office (even though the Dems want to claim that the couple of Independents didn't count even though they were heavy leaning Democrats). Likewise, the Democrats have dominated 75% of both the House and the Senate for Obama's entire term.. Blame yourselves for the mess! He could have done more and should have focused more on the economy in general than his stupid healtcare plan, which is only hypothetically feasible at best...we'll see how this new healthcare tax goes.

The only plans I see in the works are QE3, QE4, QE5, etc.., etc..., etc...
