President Barack Obama traveled to Portsmouth, N.H., looking to maintain the momentum from his Thursday night Democratic convention address despite a disappointing jobs report released Friday morning.
Trying not to put too much of a damper on the event – his first since his convention prime-time acceptance speech -- the president sought to put a positive light on the jobs report, which showed a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs created in August and an 8.1 percent unemployment rate.
“Today we learned that after losing around 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, business once again added jobs for the 30th month in a row,” he told the 6,000-person crowd at the Strawbery Banke Museum.
“But that's not good enough,” he continued. “We need to create more jobs faster. We need to fill the hole left by this recession faster. We need to come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in.”
He spent much of the rest of his speech hitting similar notes as he did Thursday night – explaining in broad, aspirational language his goals for a second term, including adding a million jobs over the next four years; cutting oil imports in half by 2020; improving access to education and overhauling the tax code.
He also, as he did Thursday night, ridiculed Republicans for what he said was a plan that relied solely on tax cuts for the wealthy intended to encourage economic growth among lower-income people.
“All they've got to offer is the same prescriptions that they've had for the last 30 years: tax cuts, tax cuts, gut some regulations -- oh, and more tax cuts,” he said. “Tax cuts when times are good, tax cuts when times are bad, tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds -- (laughter) – tax cuts to improve your love life -- I -- it'll cure anything, according to them,” he joked.
It was a similar line to one he used Thursday night, when he also characterized Republicans as depending on tax cuts as a cure-all.
“Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call me in the morning,” he joked at the Time Warner Cable arena in Charlotte, N.C., at the convention.
On the flight from Charlotte to Portsmouth, White House senior adviser David Plouffe downplayed any sort of positive effect the convention would have on the president’s standing in the polls.
“We come out of the convention with momentum. That doesn't mean the race is going to change significantly. But we think that we come out of here with some momentum in terms of putting together the electoral picture,” he told reporters traveling on the president’s plane.
Obama went on to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was to address students at the University of Iowa. He will then travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., where on Saturday he will kick off a two-day bus tour.

If the economy has added jobs for 30 months in a row, how come we've had unemployment above 8% for 42 months in a row? Something doesn't make sense here.
You are not paying attention. The hole that we are in was very very deep and the public sector is still cutting jobs. Almost all the growth is coming fron the private sector.
And getting deeper adding over 5 trillion dollars to the debt in 3.5 yrs.
Ever heard of population expansion, luke? We have more people than we can generate jobs for. Now one way to address that is to hinder conception and stop any termination of pregnancy. But GOPers are already working on that, aren't they?

Romney wanted GM and Chrysler to go THROUGH BANKRUPTCY via the existing laws on the books instead of via a lawless process where these laws were ignored by the government so they could give the UAW the lion's share of the assets that belonged to other people.

The federal bailout denied them that opportunity to swoop in for pennies on the dollar. If Romney had his way, Detroit would be building Willard sedans and Mitt sportsters.

Try using some basic common sense. The bondholders were not going to accept "pennies on the dollar". They ended up with that only because YOUR emperor and his flunkies STOLE THEIR ASSETS FROM THEM WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF LAW (and by violating practically every aspect of what those laws provide for).
It was an example of CRONY CAPITALISM TO PAY OFF THE UAW, pure and simple!
And look what it got America...$25 billion in losses and a company who is now selling upwards of 75% of their entire production to the US Government (to give the appearance of being healthy).

More than likely he was thinking of Karl Rove who advocated for the murder of Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO). The big difference in ACA and the plan you reference is that hospitals don't have to charge off losses for such treatment then try to make it up by passing those costs on to paying patients. The only reason I am backing Obama is to preserve recently passed and sustained healthcare legislation and to preserve Medicare/Medicaid. The rest of it I care little about.

With news like this, Obama will lose the undecided voters.
His only hope is to generate more enthusiasm in his base, and do everything possible to get them to the polling places in November. If his people don't turn out in droves, he's done for sure.
Since he can only win by motivating those already in his camp, we should expect even worse negative ads to come from the Obama team. With Rahm now headed back to run a PAC, it's going to be as nasty as they come.

This is so ridiculous....the unemployment rate is MUCH higher than reported. That number they give is the number of Americans on unemployment benefits. After a year you lose those benefits. The real number is probably around 12% or higher, which means many people have been out of work for over a year.
Why do people believe this BS? Seriously aren't we smart enough to know when we are lied to? Actually, probably not, when we are lied to all the time.
