Obama touts bright spot in disappointing jobs report

President Barack Obama greets supporters Friday during a campaign event at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, N.H.

President Barack Obama traveled to Portsmouth, N.H., looking to maintain the momentum from his Thursday night Democratic convention address despite a disappointing jobs report released Friday morning.

Trying not to put too much of a damper on the event – his first since his convention prime-time acceptance speech -- the president sought to put a positive light on the jobs report, which showed a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs created in August and an 8.1 percent unemployment rate.

“Today we learned that after losing around 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, business once again added jobs for the 30th month in a row,” he told the 6,000-person crowd at the Strawbery Banke Museum.

“But that's not good enough,” he continued. “We need to create more jobs faster. We need to fill the hole left by this recession faster.  We need to come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in.”

He spent much of the rest of his speech hitting similar notes as he did Thursday night – explaining in broad, aspirational language his goals for a second term, including adding a million jobs over the next four years; cutting oil imports in half by 2020; improving access to education and overhauling the tax code.

He also, as he did Thursday night, ridiculed Republicans for what he said was a plan that relied solely on tax cuts for the wealthy intended to encourage economic growth among lower-income people.

“All they've got to offer is the same prescriptions that they've had for the last 30 years:  tax cuts, tax cuts, gut some regulations -- oh, and more tax cuts,” he said. “Tax cuts when times are good, tax cuts when times are bad, tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds -- (laughter) –  tax cuts to improve your love life -- I -- it'll cure anything, according to them,” he joked.

It was a similar line to one he used Thursday night, when he also characterized Republicans as depending on tax cuts as a cure-all.

“Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call me in the morning,” he joked at the Time Warner Cable arena in Charlotte, N.C., at the convention.

On the flight from Charlotte to Portsmouth, White House senior adviser David Plouffe downplayed any sort of positive effect the convention would have on the president’s standing in the polls.

“We come out of the convention with momentum. That doesn't mean the race is going to change significantly. But we think that we come out of here with some momentum in terms of putting together the electoral picture,” he told reporters traveling on the president’s plane.

Obama went on to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was to address students at the University of Iowa. He will then travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., where on Saturday he will kick off a two-day bus tour.

Ok ...every article I read claims unemployment went down due to people giving up on looking for a job....and the President tries to deceive the people into believing the job market is getting better . Smoke and Mirrors...this President is a disgrace

There is no bright spot in the economy and for jobs since Obama has been President. Yoyu can try to sugar coat the bad news anyway you want, but it is what it is, the worst Presidential administration since Jimmy Carter and possibly even worse than Jimmy Carter. I guess to many Americans are watching MSNBC news and hearing the sugar coated Obama administration approved news that leaves out the real facts, like Mr.Obama hasn't done anything he promised 4 years ago, or he will have added more to the deficit in 4 years than Bush did in 8 years, or the fact is wild spending spree has done nothing for the economy. Mr.Obama gives great speeches, but he forgets that at some point you actually have to do something. I don't think he'll be able to talk his way out of this mess and I still believe in Hope and Change.... I hope we change this President.

We began sliding toward a Third World country status, back in the seventies. And, Bush didn't help things much during his eight years. I'd say Obama deserves eight to try and fix it.

Every republican and CEO even uses the "the world is so interconnected/dependent" statement/excuse when it comes to US control of our economic destiny/conditions - so the Pundits and Econ experts should think about how we should really view unemployment numbers now vs decades ago - relative to about every country in the world 8% is pretty darned good, and if repubs had even met the dems half or quarter of the way to their jobs bills and infrastructure spending bills it would be down to 6 or 7%. And on those tax breaks for the Rich, I say make them PROVE those 12 years of Bush Tax cuts really helped them create jobs or even retain them here!!!!!!!!! Maybe they can't prove anything except they put that tax savings into Caymans, Swiss Banks!!!!!

When will it be made mandatory, that to run for government office, it would be nice to have a valid SS number! It seems that Obama has a Conn. issued number, and he has never been a resident of that state! This is not being made up! Just search Obama's SS number fraud, and you just might be convinced that this guy is a fake!

Think you'll find that story was debunked over a year ago.

The Social Security Administration does issue numbers linked to a geographic location, but it's based on the mailing address of the applicant, as part of an internal procedure. Once the number is assigned, however, there is apparently no subsequent cross check of number to address, so the card itself goes to the address provided, no matter what the number.

In Obama's case...the number issued (which indicated Danbury, Conn.) is identical, in three of five numbers, to a Hawaii number. The likelihood is that a clerical error led to Obama's so-called "Connecticut number."

                Try again.

Why does Obama give credit to Bush for only the negative but never the positive. Every president has contributed both positively and negatively to the country, including Bush. It's just another window into the lack of character of Obama as a human being and as our president. For the sake of our country, let's hope that he doesn't fool enough people to get elected like he did the first time.

Odumbo's head is so messed up , that he thinks he is doing a good job! I think that he needs to read his healthcare bill, which he had printed on rolls of toilet paper, so everyone can see it. (Free rolls at Obama.com) He might be covered for his illness, and while he is at it, he might be able to find out what is the matter with his other half, Smokin Joe! Both are totally worthless!

Ameerica has been losing jobs since 9-11 at a rate of 800,000 per month. There has been a steady uptick in jobs production by the private sector even without the direct assistance of the current 112th Congress. Real incomes and wages are not rising due to employer discretion as many are trying to keep their own profitability. Romney's additional trying to hang the jobs numbers on the president is ludicrous as it's the Congress' responsibility to legislate jobs production atmosphere. Every history book I've read makes the Congressional House responsible for legislating for jobs production and tax code rules and regulations. Employment is in the hands of the employers and the employers could make news with employing more, but many are holding onto their money to see who will win the election.

You are right, of course. The President can't legislate. I think the argument is over what each candidate (President Obama and Governor Romney) are proposing be legislated. Not that they could do it on their own.

"Let's drop some lead on this muddafuc...."

The reason that the deficit is out of control is because of the wars during the Bush/Cheney Administration.

                                      ...but

The Bush/Cheney Administration knew that there was going to be an attack on the U.S. because of the first attack on the WTC in 1993

                                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Center_bombing

The Bush/Cheney Adminstration knew that another attack was eminent. Clinton responded by launching attacks against various Al-Qeada targets that sent them reeling until 2001 when they attack the WTC a seconds time this time with devastating effect.

Now since the WTC had been attacked in 1993 and the terrorists network involved with the attack was still in operation when Bush and Cheney came into office and threats received from Al Qeada relating to another attack on the WTC Buildings they did not need Congress' approval to launch attacks against Al Qeada or the Taliban because the two groups had already opened hostilities on America with the first WTC attack.

But because of the lack of knowledge of the Bush and Cheney during their administration in dealing with war they allowed the terrorists to attack on 9.11.01 in order to be viewed as the victim and not the aggressor when in fact America had already been the victim of an attack by the same group in 1993.

"They (The GOP and Terrorists) ain't gonna sink this battleship no way."

Because the Bush/Administration and the GOP didn't have any idea of what they were doing or how to fight a war or the laws of fighting a war they allowed 9.11.01 to happen in order to save their political images as well as having a base of politics to politic on for 8 years.

If Bush and Cheney and the GOP were knowledgable about war they could have saved those that perished on 9.11.01, along with the 5000 plus killed in action and the trillions of dollars that have been incurred since 9.11.01 as a result of the war in the Middle East that if.....

...that if the Bush/Cheney Administration and the GOP had any knowledge and ability to run the country by launching cruise missiles at the enemy like Clinton did then the trillions incurred because of the GOP's last time in the White House would not be what it is today.

The gas prices would not be as high as they are.

Americans would be able to create and own their businesses and the economy.

                                      ....the economy wouldn't suck.

Obama cannot be held responsible for the disasterous GOP administration that took America from a surplus into a severe state of economic collapse.

No matter how the spinners try to spin it the truth and facts are there.

Those truths reside between the first WTC and second WTC attacks that Bush and Cheney could legally have taken action against without the approval of Congress or waiting for America to be attacked.

"...When the enemy has attacked you once and your leader retaliates. It is the next leaders duty to maintain attacks on the same enemy in order to maintain the security of the country they are appointed to protect without waiting for the same enemy to attack a second time."

I was instructed that the stock market is a leading indicator, that the stock market projects how the economy will fare six to eighteen months into the future. Experience has proven that this is a reliable indicator for the economy and future economic growth.

Once the Obama Administration stopped the horrendous REPUBLICAN FINANCIAL DISASTER named the Republican Great Recession of 2008 and placed a foundation under our economy in 2010, the stock market has now gone from 6,500 to 13,000, do the arithmetic.

The stock market is INDICATING that our ECONOMY is IMPROVING and will continue to IMPROVE under the GUIDANCE of the OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

In my lifetime I have NEVER SEEN THE REPUBLICANS LEAD ECONOMIC GROWTH, they ALWAYS CREATE A RECESSION, fact check this!

Obama calls it "looking for a bright spot".

                                                  The clinical term is "Denial".
