Obama touts bright spot in disappointing jobs report

President Barack Obama greets supporters Friday during a campaign event at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, N.H.

President Barack Obama traveled to Portsmouth, N.H., looking to maintain the momentum from his Thursday night Democratic convention address despite a disappointing jobs report released Friday morning.

Trying not to put too much of a damper on the event – his first since his convention prime-time acceptance speech -- the president sought to put a positive light on the jobs report, which showed a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs created in August and an 8.1 percent unemployment rate.

“Today we learned that after losing around 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, business once again added jobs for the 30th month in a row,” he told the 6,000-person crowd at the Strawbery Banke Museum.

“But that's not good enough,” he continued. “We need to create more jobs faster. We need to fill the hole left by this recession faster.  We need to come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in.”

He spent much of the rest of his speech hitting similar notes as he did Thursday night – explaining in broad, aspirational language his goals for a second term, including adding a million jobs over the next four years; cutting oil imports in half by 2020; improving access to education and overhauling the tax code.

He also, as he did Thursday night, ridiculed Republicans for what he said was a plan that relied solely on tax cuts for the wealthy intended to encourage economic growth among lower-income people.

“All they've got to offer is the same prescriptions that they've had for the last 30 years:  tax cuts, tax cuts, gut some regulations -- oh, and more tax cuts,” he said. “Tax cuts when times are good, tax cuts when times are bad, tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds -- (laughter) –  tax cuts to improve your love life -- I -- it'll cure anything, according to them,” he joked.

It was a similar line to one he used Thursday night, when he also characterized Republicans as depending on tax cuts as a cure-all.

“Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call me in the morning,” he joked at the Time Warner Cable arena in Charlotte, N.C., at the convention.

On the flight from Charlotte to Portsmouth, White House senior adviser David Plouffe downplayed any sort of positive effect the convention would have on the president’s standing in the polls.

“We come out of the convention with momentum. That doesn't mean the race is going to change significantly. But we think that we come out of here with some momentum in terms of putting together the electoral picture,” he told reporters traveling on the president’s plane.

Obama went on to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was to address students at the University of Iowa. He will then travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., where on Saturday he will kick off a two-day bus tour.

Sustainable new jobs will not come until this nation adopts a policy of Fair Free Trade. A policy that will “RETURN” Sustainable Manufacturing Jobs to US Americans!” What is most needed is the return of “Made In The USA” long term manufacturing jobs. Our economy will not stabilize until maker jobs are returned to US Americans. I doubt if Romney will be willing to propose a Fair Free Trade policy that will “return” Jobs to US Americans, will Obama? We do not need fewer domestic regulations and/or requirements, or more tariffs, quotas and stimulus programs. We only need Fair Free Trade, a level playing field for the US American worker/producer to compete on for the USA market. Not Balanced Trade - Exporting a billion dollars of raw materials and importing a billion dollars of “Made In China” consumer goods does not return jobs to US Americans. Not Fair Trade - where we would intrude in other nations internal affairs. Not Free Trade - where Thousands of US American Factories have been shipped overseas, Millions of US American Jobs have been shipped overseas, Billions of US American Dollars to buy "Made In China" consumer goods have been shipped overseas, Billions of Dollars worth of US American raw materials have been shipped overseas to provide offshore jobs, and Trillions of US American Debt Obligations have been shipped overseas in the name of “Free Trade”. But Fair Free Trade, where all imports allowed into the USA market must meet at least ALL minimum USA production and/or providing standards of: quality, safety, health, environment, and wages of the USA. Fair Free Trade - where other nations would be free to choose if they want to meet our standards if they want to export to the USA market. Our economy is shaky, and the USA National Government is totally dysfunctional. The key to stable and sustainable recovery in the USA is Fair Free Trade. Is the return of manufacturing (maker) jobs to the USA. Go to: http: www. manifestry .info > Trade

I know you'll have something special to say about Obama's setting a new American record. It such a bright spot for Obama and the rest of the country. You democrats must really be proud. Not every day you can break a record.

A record high 46.37 American are receiving food stamps.

Obama is so proud of that record, he said that if he's somehow he manages to get reelected, he's going to work even harder to to break the record.

Stay the course America, we have a record breaking president.

If the president has got these plane for putting us back to work and reviving our economy .. WHY HAS HE NOT IMPLIMENTED THEM BEFORE NOW ? Whats up with that.. No cabinet meetings, How do you run anything without getting folks together and finding consensus. ?

About Obama care :Folks are not going to be very happy when they find out that its not free insurance.. Before Obama care you could go to any emergency room in Texas and get treatment without a drop of insurance. .. Under this new plan if you go you will pay penalties.. I see poor families afraid to go or take their children to the hospital out of fear of having to pay a penality.

The Republicans are dancing in the streets over this. I really do not see how people could support a party or candidate hoping for bad news only to be happy inside. We all know that RomneyHood and Lyin Ryan were hoping for bad news. But this is actually good news. There are 96,000 families that will tell you so. How about the merchants who will sell them goods. How many movie tickets can 96,000 people buy. 96,000 people went an ate out twice a week. 96,000 people financed a car to go to work.

          Funny

It seem the republicans aren't the only one enjoying this news, Obama sure has a big smile he's flashing. But then again, Obama could be smiling because he set a record.

A record high number, 46.37 million Amerians are receiving food stamps.

That's 46.37 million people who can't afford go out and finance a car, can't buy a ticket, or go out to eat twice a week.

Stay the course, Obama promises he'll do everything in his power to break that record if reelected.

Obama does not want more jobs, he does not want our economy to do better, he wants this country to go under and become a 2 world country. Or the fact the labor participation rate is at the lowest level in over 30 years? NBC is a disgrace. If this is the only place you get your news, please check out:

The earned income credit may disappear under a new tax plan. By doing away with the EIC, that money could be applied to the debt load and reduce the amount of debt load and interest accumulating on the debt load.

yeah, I watched all the single moms at my place of employment get the EIC...they ran out and frittered away the money buying needed items for their kids....Yeah, we should definitely do away with the EIC to pay down the debt....

Maybe we can use the savings to afford the tax cut for the wealthy so those moms will be so lucky to even have a low wage job...

I hope you agree that programs that develop children's TV prgrams in foreign countries can be cut to reduce the spending.

I think that spending on TV/education for children overseas is a small fraction of the budget and, with thoughtful oversight, pays huge dividends.

Pay me now or pay me later. We can influence early (with comparatively minimal cost) or pay hugely (punitively) on the other end. Or do you prefer war/incarceration, etc.?

Yeah and how fair is it to the American worker that not just single moms, but a whole host of others that dont even work or PAY TAXES, get SEVERAL thousand dollars back in EIC ?..I personally know of one family that got 9 thousand dollars back and they dont work..dont pay taxes..dont do @!$%# except live off the government..If thats what the EIC is, then yes..do away with it.

More people dropped off the list that are considered unemployed because they gave up looking, so they are not counted as unemployed because they gave up looking.

So the jobless rate is said to have gone down by .2% really?

Hell of a math class you folks in Government took, must be if you think you are going to convince the population that the rate went down when in reality (the world we live in) it went up.

And you wonder what is wrong with government?

I will calculate the rate anyway I deem necessary to ensure you vote me back in as I love my retirement and benefits package, cronyism loves cronyism.

Oh and lets not forget how the cost of living is calculated as it does not take into account food or energy when they calculate the percentage as you really don't require either to survive, just to vote.

The Government as a whole is non functional, it feeds upon itself, by feeding itself the gullible citizen population that believes the BS it spews in order for you to pay for their retirement packages.

Politicians promise - vote for me we will get to your issue someday, promise.

They are all hiding because they used the SS fund as a piggy bank to make promises over the years they couldn't keep in order to - get re-elected. Now the money is drying up and they want you to pay more without you getting upset over it because they have specific life styles to lead.

The writing is on the wall, globalization to include NAFTA, CAFTA etc have sold this country down the tubes. Americans cannot compete with a 3rd world country that will do the same job (albeit the quality sucks) for pennies on the dollar of a fraction of the cost of labor in the USA.

As for Bain Capital well its amusing that most of those complaining have what? There money is invested Bain capital, including the divider and chief currently in office along with most of his cronies. But they complain just the same to get you to be decisive.

America doesn't need more politicians we have enough of them lying and trying to remain in office for the perks and cronyism.

America needs a leader for all people, regardless of success, religion, race or political donations. Unfortunately what we have does not work and the next will not work either as the system is rigged to keep the lying class of both sides in office.

You know - getting hired part time at a hotel for Monday and Tuesday - 8 hours each day because Mondays are the worst day to work as a maid in a hotel plus getting 2 four hour shifts at a coffee shop on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon constitutes 2 jobs toward job growth. 24 hours a week of part time work - is 2 new jobs- I guess it is growth though - for 66 weeks - there was not one hour of work.

The tax code and the Federal Government SPENDING MUST be reformed before even considering raising taxes on ANYONE, period. Obama is ridiculous about raising taxes.

You can tax citizens 100% of their income but when you print, borrow, and SPEND at a rate that is 140% of the taxes collected .... you get MORE DEBT!

Things are far worse than people realize, and if Obama gets reelected we will go bankrupt. Remember in 2008 Obama said he would reduce the debt by half, and he nearly DOUBLED it. Guess what we will get if Obama is reelected....MORE OF THE SAME CRAP.

Obama has NO IDEAS about how to solve the problems other than SPEND and then TAX....and that is even worse than TAX and then SPEND. Obama has no other ideas than SPEND MORE and TAX MORE so that GOVERNMENT CONTROLS EVERYTHING eventually. Socialism at its "finest".

50% that pay NO TAXES will surely VOTE for the other 50% that do pay taxes to PAY MORE. That is how socialism works. The Communist Party in the old USSR was that way. The 51% that were "government" made a great living on the backs of the working people. It never lasts though, revolution is the end result.

The moderate democrats aren't supporting Obama because he extended the tax cut to the rich rather than implement his job creating tax reform that would have had the rich paying higher taxes.

Then there are the indepentents that will support Romney for the same reason they supported Obama. They see failure and want change.

Maybe Hopei, but I made a much bigger sacrifice than him. It's all relative you know. And from what I hear, I paid more than him before that...

HERE IT IS............ If any jobs ARE created NOW in the USA, they are going to China anyway just like all the ones that are already over there!!!!

TWO....... All of the "traitor" major corporations who have bailed out on American workers ARE creating NEW JOBS............ but hey are being created in China.

If you did, there would be a big FAT TARIFF on all Chinese imports that would fill the US Treasury with all of the money we need. Raising taxes is NOT necessary at all.

FACT....... DC politicians are "SCARED TO DEATH" of China and US corporations. They have sold out on the American Worker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get use to this.... There WON'T BE ANY JOBS CREATED................. ever again, regardless of who the president is.

I have a slight problem with our Job Czar who is Jeff Immelt, who by the way is the KING of Chinese General Electric factories and workers. Tell me why Obama felt it was good to assign this guy this spot when GE is rapidly the epitome of outsourcing when the president is furiously against it.

Does this make sense? Will there be a rational answer or will the replies be Republicans are evil?

Jimbo, GE is just the tip of the iceberg.

Our ENTIRE House/Senate, Judicial and Executive branches are equally complicit in LYING and fooling the American people about outsourcing............ as they line their pockets with CORPORATE WEALTH.

DC is a treasonous and corrupt place as bad as anything you will see in all of the "evil regimes" you will see around the world.

Most of them should be in jail with all of their assets going into the US Treasury for renewed infrastructure building from sea to shining sea. Anyone who votes for an incumbent of any stripe is supporting this corruption.

Biden will become very sick on the days of Vice-Presidential debates.

Actually, Ryan will have to be careful. Do you remember when Al Gore came on too strong over George Bush Junior?..."overbearing?" Some say it cost him the election........... "being too hard on little Georgie." LoL

Seems too many Americans don't want to see an attack dog leader.

Ryan will have to use some restraint. We are, unfortunately, a "mamsy pamsy" society.

Romney's coffers are being filled by the Koch brothers and people like them. Romney is owned by the corporations. His only loyalty is to his uber rich brethren. If you really believe he gives a damn about the middle class or the poor you're way too gullible. The whole purpose of the corporate party is to avoid paying any taxes at all, exploiting the labor force by elimination of the minimum wage and kicking social security and medicare to the curb. There will be no safety nets at all when they get done. You will be completely at the mercy of the same people that give each other $20million bonuses for driving their companies into the ground.

They aren't even good businessmen. They're incapable of providing any real service to their customers. They see customers only as a bunch of sheep to be fleeced. Look at your bank fees, your boarding fees, your baggage fees. Pretty soon you will be paying them to breathe. They loot their companies. They don't manage them. They get their jobs because their daddies went to school together, not because they're actually qualified to do anything other than sniff cocaine and party with Paris Hilton. They're the parasites. They produce nothing. They use and abuse and whine if they have to contribute anything to the world around them.

With GM building its new manufacturing plants in China and Wells Faro already shipping its jobs to India, nothing has change much under Obama other than the fact that these two companies received bailout money.

Oops, my Mistake. Much has changed. A debt crisis that has made our government unstable. $5.9 Trillion has been added to the National debt in 3.75 years. Record high number of Americans are receiving food stamps., etc..

what happened: To suggest that Obama's bailouts were some sort of "change" from established practices is to ignore history. The US government has intervened financially to rescue companies, and has suppressed unions at the behest of corporate behemoths. Though I agree with Obama on some stuff, this errand-boy-ing for (and failing to prosecute ) banks is one of his least-likeable traits. Of course, Romney would be worse.

PS: what happened ( the poster ) modified his original post, a questionable practice at best .

First, I read our post. Second, I'm not the one judging here. You are the one who initially suggested using EIC money to pay down the national debt. You seem to have experience with people you think abuse the system.

Ithink the EIC is a good program. Why? Because my experience is different from yours. I see what it represents in the lives of some of my co-workers. They might buy their child a new bed, put tires on the car, etc. A few speak to me personally about their plans for the money. It's the opportunity they have every year to do something "big" for their familes. I don't have the experiences with the EIC or the people that get it that you do. I see it as a positive in the life of many low wage and/or single parent families.
