President Barack Obama traveled to Portsmouth, N.H., looking to maintain the momentum from his Thursday night Democratic convention address despite a disappointing jobs report released Friday morning.
Trying not to put too much of a damper on the event – his first since his convention prime-time acceptance speech -- the president sought to put a positive light on the jobs report, which showed a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs created in August and an 8.1 percent unemployment rate.
“Today we learned that after losing around 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, business once again added jobs for the 30th month in a row,” he told the 6,000-person crowd at the Strawbery Banke Museum.
“But that's not good enough,” he continued. “We need to create more jobs faster. We need to fill the hole left by this recession faster. We need to come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in.”
He spent much of the rest of his speech hitting similar notes as he did Thursday night – explaining in broad, aspirational language his goals for a second term, including adding a million jobs over the next four years; cutting oil imports in half by 2020; improving access to education and overhauling the tax code.
He also, as he did Thursday night, ridiculed Republicans for what he said was a plan that relied solely on tax cuts for the wealthy intended to encourage economic growth among lower-income people.
“All they've got to offer is the same prescriptions that they've had for the last 30 years: tax cuts, tax cuts, gut some regulations -- oh, and more tax cuts,” he said. “Tax cuts when times are good, tax cuts when times are bad, tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds -- (laughter) – tax cuts to improve your love life -- I -- it'll cure anything, according to them,” he joked.
It was a similar line to one he used Thursday night, when he also characterized Republicans as depending on tax cuts as a cure-all.
“Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call me in the morning,” he joked at the Time Warner Cable arena in Charlotte, N.C., at the convention.
On the flight from Charlotte to Portsmouth, White House senior adviser David Plouffe downplayed any sort of positive effect the convention would have on the president’s standing in the polls.
“We come out of the convention with momentum. That doesn't mean the race is going to change significantly. But we think that we come out of here with some momentum in terms of putting together the electoral picture,” he told reporters traveling on the president’s plane.
Obama went on to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was to address students at the University of Iowa. He will then travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., where on Saturday he will kick off a two-day bus tour.

What Bright Spot? The fact that just over a third as many jobs were created as there were people entering the job market? The fact that 386,000 people have given up looking for work in the past three months? Eight percent unemployment is not in any way normal, neither a "new" normal nor any other kind of normal. It is a crying shame and needs to be hung around the neck of the socialist candidate that keeps scaring the employer/entrepeneurs out of investing their cash in the economy.
Bright spot in deed there is. Obama set a new American record. Those receiving food stamps hit a record high at 46.37 million American. Don't take Obama's shining moment away from him, he's worked very hard to achieve that record.
He's vowing that if he's reelected he's even going to work harder to break that record.

It is amazing any American would vote for Obama. I hope Romney raises the education standards.
I am happy for the 96,000 job seekers that were successful finding jobs! I venture to say that they are too!
All the negativity about this was not enough to make a difference, I can remember 1970 when I returned from Vietnam and the job market was nearly as bad as it now. My first job, after returning to the World, was selling Fuller Brush products door to door. It wasn't what I really wanted but it put food on the table. After about a year I got a good job with good benefits but I was still thankful for the being hired to sell Fuller Brushes.
Times are tough but 96,000 jobs is better than 96,000 additional jobs lost! Things are getting better, there are some success stories out there. We should celebrate those successes and pray for more!
Has it occurred to anyone that the corporations backing Romney are deliberately not hiring? They're putting it off, even though they need to hire, because they want Obama to look bad. They're not just trying to put the election with their super pacs. They're also deliberately stacking the unemployment deck so that people will put their puppet in the White House and then they can do anything they want, no regulations, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act, just free to destroy the earth and human health and our quality of life. Not only that, but once they're in full control, you can forget any kind of health care or decent wages. We'll be back in the dark ages, when ninety percent of the population was enslaved and abused and starved by the aristocracy, which is what the uber rich consider themselves to be.

My dads messge to the American people: Well, I think Obama is concerned about unemployment. I thnk he still wants to pass that program that would help with infrastructure...the jobs act or something like that. Remember that program where he went all over the country asking Americans to put pressure on Congress to pass it...to build roads and bridges...but Republicans didn't want to pass it...it was like "why should we make the guy look good?"
The fact that he passed the insurance program...the health insurance for the kids...that's important. And then the womens' rights...you know, the abortion and the birth control and the equal pay. I don't think women have equal pay even now... in spite of how hard the work and all the good things they do...
And our military...I worry about our soldiers all the time. I served in Korea...the war nobody talks about...I saw what happened...it was bad too,not just Vietnam. I know how war can mess up men's minds and lives...
I support Barack Obama because he is trying to help young people get an education. He helps on student loans. Eucation is so important. I come from a poor family...I did not have the right education to pass college...I barely got out of high school. In Korea when I was 17 and sending money home to my mother. Then I used the GI Bill to get a good job with the aircraft industry and learning how to become a machinist. They paid my tuition for my tools....it was the career of my life...and I thank God for the union. Without the union, I could not have helped my children get their education.
I think that Republicans are just for the rich people. They don't know about poor people. Like Romney said, "there are programs for the poor." Obama understands the poor. He knows what it is like. All he did was hard knocks. He paid his own way. Borrowing money. High school, college, law school. Community affairs. All walks of life. Ran for office. Became a Senator. And basically he, basically he knows the life of the poor and the life of the middle class. He is qualified to speak for me and my parents and my children.
I think Barack Obama is sincere and speaks from the heart. I also believe he is a Christian and he is an American. And I think he cares about our military. Our enemy number one - BinLaden - he gave the order that got him. I am proud of him for that.
His plans for the future are to benefit all Americans in employment, education, in health insurance and to put our country back on track.
These are the words of my dad, 76 years old.

Lol...I do love my dad. He does his best every day - this evening walking out into a sudden thunder storm (that knocked out the power in a 7 mile radious to save my new avocado plant/tree I'd set on the sidewalk...almost blew him away...whether it's sweeping our front porch or fixing a flat tire or walking the dogs or running an errand or keeping good relations with the neighbors, or talking over the future...he's still my inspiration. So if he's elected again he states that he's going to create 1 million new jobs over the next four years..Folks that pans out to just 22 thousand per month,and most of them will probably be seasonal mexican farm hand work.Man, thats really putting the tires back on the economy and zipping it on down the road.But please tell us how you plan to create those jobs Mr. president..I can say I'm going to turn a black cow purple all I want, but it doesnt make it purple just because I said I was going to do it..Am I going to paint, or dye it, or choke it until its purple..THOSE are specifics. {3} He promised to keep unemployment UNDER 8%, as it stands its been 40 months OVER 8%...Can you explain this one?..And you cant blame everything on Congress not wanting to work with him..
{4} He promised to pull ALL troops out of Iraq and end the "wars' by 2012..I'm thinking this is the year for that yet 30 thousand troops are still in Iraq, and the war in Afganistan has been escalated with mounting casualities..Explain why he hasnt kept his promise..

1.Continue to not reach across the aisle because I am smarter than anyone on the planet and I know best.
2. Continue class warfare......divide and conquer seems like a good strategy
3. Triple down on the stimulus......Spend 2.4 trillion on shovel ready jobs
4. Get food stamp recipients up to 80 miliion form 40 million people
5. Get more college grads. to live at home with Mom and Dad........they are used to living off the dole anyway
6. Bailout GM two more times and leave the American taxpayers with a $75 bil. bill instead of $25 bil.
7. Kill Bin Laden 3 more times......and take credit for it
8. Make sure the Median income drops another $5000......that will start to level the playing field a bit
9. Eliminate all coal, oil and gas usage.....these will run out soon anyway.......we only have a 250 year supply of coal
10. Makes sure gas is well over $6.00 a gallon
11. Spend so much that the National debt double to $32 trillion
Well that should do it......we will be well on our way to recovery then....well back to the golf course and a little more fund raising

So according to what I see here these people want to vote for the guy who prior to this job worked two years in congress, and didn't show up more than 50% of the time, worked four year as the president with a dominate democratic legislature, democratic supreme court, passed 90% of the bills he wanted to pass and still can't produce jobs or improve the economy, let alone keep all those promises from his first campaign, and now he puts the guy down that has worked all his life,run his own business and made himself a millionare, which is the American dream, and he was put down for that, and you want me to vote for the loser. BYE BYE OBAMA. When you lose this election just blame it on Bush!!!
