Obama touts bright spot in disappointing jobs report

Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP

President Barack Obama greets supporters Friday during a campaign event at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, N.H.

President Barack Obama traveled to Portsmouth, N.H., looking to maintain the momentum from his Thursday night Democratic convention address despite a disappointing jobs report released Friday morning.

Trying not to put too much of a damper on the event – his first since his convention prime-time acceptance speech -- the president sought to put a positive light on the jobs report, which showed a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs created in August and an 8.1 percent unemployment rate.

“Today we learned that after losing around 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, business once again added jobs for the 30th month in a row,” he told the 6,000-person crowd at the Strawbery Banke Museum.

“But that's not good enough,” he continued. “We need to create more jobs faster. We need to fill the hole left by this recession faster.  We need to come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in.”

He spent much of the rest of his speech hitting similar notes as he did Thursday night – explaining in broad, aspirational language his goals for a second term, including adding a million jobs over the next four years; cutting oil imports in half by 2020; improving access to education and overhauling the tax code.

He also, as he did Thursday night, ridiculed Republicans for what he said was a plan that relied solely on tax cuts for the wealthy intended to encourage economic growth among lower-income people.

“All they've got to offer is the same prescriptions that they've had for the last 30 years:  tax cuts, tax cuts, gut some regulations -- oh, and more tax cuts,” he said. “Tax cuts when times are good, tax cuts when times are bad, tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds -- (laughter) –  tax cuts to improve your love life -- I -- it'll cure anything, according to them,” he joked.

It was a similar line to one he used Thursday night, when he also characterized Republicans as depending on tax cuts as a cure-all.

“Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call me in the morning,” he joked at the Time Warner Cable arena in Charlotte, N.C., at the convention.

On the flight from Charlotte to Portsmouth, White House senior adviser David Plouffe downplayed any sort of positive effect the convention would have on the president’s standing in the polls.

“We come out of the convention with momentum. That doesn't mean the race is going to change significantly. But we think that we come out of here with some momentum in terms of putting together the electoral picture,” he told reporters traveling on the president’s plane.

Obama went on to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was to address students at the University of Iowa. He will then travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., where on Saturday he will kick off a two-day bus tour.

...but they don't cure everything...and based on current evidence, they don't cure ANYTHING!!!

Just look at "The 43rd President of the United States" and the tax shift cuts that he passed all those years ago. They were made temporary but they've been extended twice now. If they did what Republicans keep telling us they are supposed to do wouldn't we be out of this unemployment mess?

The "job creators" have their tax shift cuts. Where are the jobs?

So why does Obama want to make 80% of those tax cuts permanent? He has never called for an increase on those making 250K or less which make up the majority of the Bush tax cuts.

Well, Alan, the President has said repeatedly that he does not want to raise taxes on the middle class and small businesses until things improve. It is the GOP that is holding that plan hostage to ensure tax cuts for the richest Americans are also extended.

BTW, the majority of the Bush tax cuts are ABOVE $250K in earnings, not below as you stated. The Bush tax cuts have always heavily favored the wealthiest Americans.

BS. The cost of the tax cuts for those above $250K is 700B over 10 years.

The cost for those earning under 250K is $3T over 10 years

Treasury estimates the costs of making the tax cuts permanent for everyone is $3.7 trillion over 10 years.

Of that, $3 trillion accounts for the cost of extending them for the vast majority of Americans, as the president has proposed. The remaining $700 billion is the cost of extending them permanently for the high-income earners.

The #1 reason for the slowing of economic growth this year can be attributed to three letters of the alphabet. G-O-P. Why? Because GOP legislators didn't want the economy to improve regardless of what they say. If the economy improved, they didn't have a chance in 2012 and they knew it. Party First, America Last is the GOP motto.

Since the GOP took control of the House, they have done NOTHING, absolutely nothing except pass anti-womens health bills, personhood bills, mandatory ultrasound bills and dozens of other anti-abortion pieces of legislation and they named a few post offices. They obstructed and blocked the American Jobs Act which would have added over 1 million new jobs--those million jobs last September would have continued the economic growth we were seeing in 2011 and early 2012 by spurring millions more but the GOP said "NO". Where are the jobs Boehner promised? Republicans elected GOPers in 2010 but it seems they didn't keep the promises they made now did they? Now they point their finger at President Obama.

the ones that will benefit the 98% - you know, all those people who actually spend their hard earn cash to buy products.

Instead, Romney want to cut more taxes for the wealthy (even though Bush tax cuts failed) while he wants to take deductions from the rest of us like the mortgage interest deduction.

Where are the jobs? Well, with Obama running up the deficit people are saving money to whether the storm. It makes sense. Not everyone runs a business like Solyndra.

Regarding the "bright spot" in the jobs report: What Obama didn't tell you that although 96,000 new jobs were supposedly created and the unemployment rate dropped from 8.3% to 8.1% (the experts had anticipated 125,000 new jobs and unemployment remaining at 8.3%), the number of people employed in the private sector dropped by 368,000! Yup, that's great news alright. More people becoming dependent on government. This President is succeeding!

ADP begs to differ...

Employment in the U.S. nonfarm private business sector increased by 201,000 from July to August, on a seasonally adjusted basis. The estimated gain from June to July was revised up from the initial estimate of 163,000 to 173,000.

Actually, going from negative job growth to positive job growth qualifies as a turnaround. And bear in mind that the Democrats actually cooperated with Reagan during that recession (remember Tip O'Neil?) And remember Reagan's willingness to raise taxes when it was the smart thing to do?

The Republicans have a lot of "brass" criticizing the President's inability to solve the jobs problem when they have not allowed the President's programs to pass in Congress. You actually have to TRY the program before you can claim that the program does not work. Right?

sirie, that would be 30 years of trickle down, supply side economic policies President Obama was referring to, begun by--wait for it--Ronald Reagan. 30 years of loopholes and tax cuts mostly benefiting the wealthy, 30 years of neglecting this nations needs because, heaven forbid, anyone should pay a bit more in taxes. Reagan and Bush 41 quadrupled the debt, Bush 43 doubled it again. Even Reagan realized his mistake and agreed to tax increases, 11 of them. You don't repair the damage of 30 years of GOP failed policies which finally totally collapse the economy in 2008 in one term, two terms or even three terms.

Republicans don't have a clue of how to fix our Economy and never have. For the past 3-1/2 years Republicans did everything in their power to make sure American workers suffered every minute of everyday by stalling our Economic Recovery and refusing to pass laws necessary to hasten our Economic Recovery.

Republicans' entire 40 year record is complete with utter, total failure, and Republicans have NEVER cared about improving the American People's lives nor have Republicans ever done anything to improve "quality of life" issues of the American People!

Republicans will send overseas aid to foreign countries by the billions, but Republicans can't stand to see the American People prosper one iota from the benefit of our own taxpayer dollars.

Several times in his acceptance speech Obama blamed the presidents who preceded him in "last two decades" for causing the problems which he has been unable to deliver us from. Lets see who served in those two decades.

There was Bill Clinton (1993 - 2001) and George W. Bush (2001 - 2009). Every time Obama goes back in history in an attempt to establish the sour position that the Republicans supposedly placed, him in he walks over his "good buddy" Bill Clinton. How could he forget that Clinton existed when Clinton spoke on his behalf the night before.

Clinton "supposedly" cleaned everything up and George W Bush (and/or his predecessors) screwed everything up. That's been Obama's position all along. Maybe he just has his chronology screwed up. If so, why didn't one of his advisers mention it? Or, is he slamming Clinton?

People actually believe this guy? Reagan had a worse economy, 20% inflation, 13% unemployment, yet created 6 million jobs in 1 term, brought inflation below 4%, and unemployment under 5%, all in one term....

You also seem to forget that Reagan also raised taxes AND spending while hiring more government workers. As for the inflation part, Reagan's tax cuts would have increased inflation, yet the Fed was taming the inflation beast. And Reagan didn't have to deal with an opposing party that stonewalled his every move; Tip O'Neill compromised with Reagan, yet John Boehner and Mitch McConnell never had it in them to do the same with Obama. And by the way, Obama reformed the healthcare industry, removed barriers for gays to serve in our military, and stimulated the economy via the stimulus, all in one term. Don't think that you have all the cards.

First of all, you know as well as I do that that phrase was just a cover so that Obama could extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone. Secondly, I agree with you; Obama is promoting class warfare. It's a fact. However, it's not an attack on the rich; it's retaliation. For 30 years, Republicans have been dominated by the wealthiest Americans, and have declared a war on those who aren't in the upper class. The rich have denounced the poor via the GOP as "moochers, dependents, and welfare queens." For 30 years, supply-side economics have hammered away against middle and lower income Americans, reducing their share of the American economy and stagnating their wages. And they have not said a word; in fact, they accepted this suffering, thinking that it would lead to prosperity in the future. Now, it's time we fight. I not only accept class warfare; I want it. I am tired of Republicans and businessmen alike controlling our government and benefiting from our nation's services while demanding less in taxes and regulations. I say take those bastards on and let the winner rule the country. It's about time middle-income Americans stop taking the bull@!$%# that the GOP and the wealthy keep throwing at them and stand up for themselves.

Dave today was evidence of further failure not progress. The economy is not growing sufficient enought to generate enough jobs for people wanting jobs. 368,00 gave up last month.

Recovery usually means a 4.5 - 6.5% growth in GDP 2.5% is required just to stay even. We are not really recovering yet, we are still falling behind.

Less than 2% increase in jobs is falling behind, 97,000 new jobs is less than 2% We are continuing to fall behind.

I got an email from a conservative relative this morning.

had a picture of Clinton "you cannot recover from such a fall in four years"

Then a picture of Reagan "I did"

Let me add. Warren G Harding also would say "I did"

Just a clarification. Obama has not suggested making the tax cuts for those making under $250 permanent, but just currently extending them. He acknowledges that at some future point they too will need to be raised.

The thing is that the middle class consumer will put those tax cuts back into the economy. However, the top earners may very well just sit on them. They have had these cuts for some time now and the tax cuts plus record profits has big business, corporations and the wealthy, sitting on a bout $3 trillion or more. They are not taking that money and creating jobs with it and there is no logical reason why giving them even more, would be any different. Bottom line is that without a big consumer demand, there simply is no logical reasons for them to create jobs. Instead they have less risk and better returns playing that money in the commodities markets. That's where a lot of this excess cash resides. Unfortunately, all that speculation results is higher consumer prices. That is the biggest reason for high gas prices and also the rising food prices.

The economy will continue to slowly come back and left to the private sector, that rate of recovery will stay slow. If we want it to come back faster, we need to create jobs artificially in the short term. Basically this is Stimulus. The President's jobs plan should have been passed a year ago and by now we would have an additional 1 million consumers. It was paid for, not to mention that the jobs created would be primarily for infrastructure rebuilding which is long overdue anyway. Republicans flatly refused. It's not even like they wanted to modify it, they just refused. If you want to get out of a recession quicker, the government needs to step in with clearly directed activities that get people back to work. If you just throw money at the rich and hope, you'll just be disappointed, because it will only be the slow recovery of demand that will create new jobs. We know this clearly because they are already sitting on tons of excess cash and not creating jobs. Giving them more cash to sit on will do nothing but eventually result in higher consumer prices because of all the commodities gambling the extra cash funds.

Last I knew, and have always seen, they want to reduce everyone's taxes. And, no, you obviously haven't been paying attention to politics if you think that the wealthy are only repubs. Nor are they dominated by repubs. Just look at all of this stimulus money and even the bank bailout money. It all went to dems. The fact is that people like Bill Gates have been given a pass by the dems because he's a dem. Traditionally, the libs love to bash the successful people like Gates. Of course, while bashing Gates they will continue to by the products created by Gates. Also, Gates made a ton of people wealthy and all of those people paid a lot of taxes to help the "poor."

Unfortunately we have several tiers of dems (libs). On the one side of the spectrum are those who have figured out that if they vote for dems they can vote themselves money out of the pockets of other people. On the other side are those who are in power and know that a lot of people will vote to give them power if they promise utopia. In the middle you have people who really don't understand politics or economics and wish to believe that the dem politicians really do have their best interests at heart. However you wish to look at it, there has never been a society where the rulers decide everything that has succeeded in helping the masses. Nor has there ever been a society were power is centralized that has made it's people better off. The fact is that the more freedom a society has the more prosperous it's people are. And that includes everyone in it. Just compare our poor to the poor of other countries. Do you really think that the poor in the Congo, India, China, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, or most anywhere else have microwaves, air conditioning, cars, stoves, refrigerators, indoor plumbing, etc.? Heck, even the clean air and water that the dems think they are the only ones who desire it, just where do you think the money and technology comes from to provide that for us? It comes from the wealth that the evil capitalism provides.

And that's why I say libs don't understand economics. They assume the money and wealth will still be there even if they take all the money away from the people who create the wealth. Why do you think that socialist countries don't produce that much or have that much innovation? Well, look at it this way. If government decided a "fair wage" is $50,000 a year, how much are you willing to work to get it? If you work in a union factory and the rules have been set up such that you will get paid so much and are expected to produce so many widgets a day, and you are told that you shouldn't produce any more than that and you won't get paid any more, what's your incentive to produce more? What's your incentive to advise management of a way to be more effective? If you live in one of the "compassionate" socialist countries that guarantees you a job, what's your incentive to anything? On the other hand, if you know you can get paid for doing more, are you just as likely to sit on your butt doing nothing? This is the difference between Socialism and Capitalism. Obama represents the former.

Repubs keep complaining that economy is not turned around fast enough for the, and I will remind they how they Obstucted President Obama from day one!

Rt wingers come on to the blog and whine about things not going good enough while they hide the facts they are trying to sabotage the economy and anything good to make Obama a one term president!

TomWood-5404531 posted the same story the other day, see below.

On January 20, 2009 Republican Leaders in Congress literally plotted to sabotage and undermine U.S. Economy during President Obama's Inauguration. In Robert Draper's book, "Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives" Draper wrote that during a four hour, "invitation only" meeting with GOP Hate-Propaganda Minister, Frank Luntz, the below listed Senior GOP Law Writers literally plotted to sabotage, undermine and destroy America's Economy.

Frank Luntz - GOP Minister of Propaganda
    Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)
    Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA)
    Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA),
    Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX),
    Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX),
    Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI)
    Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA),
    Sen. Jim DeMint (SC-R),
    Sen. Jon Kyl (AZ-R),
    Sen. Tom Coburn (OK-R),
    Sen. John Ensign (NV-R) and
    Sen. Bob Corker (TN-R).Non-lawmakers present
    Newt Gingrich

During the four hour meeting: The senior GOP members plotted to bring Congress to a standstill regardless how much it would hurt the American Economy by pledging to obstruct and block President Obama on all legislation.

I just wish Republicans would remember how Reagan got the unemployment rate to drop. He put 200,000 teachers to work right off the bat. The Republicans now days do away with hundreds of thousands of jobs at the state levels and expect the unemployment rate to go down, oh wait maybe they do realize that it will only raise the rate but that really is what they want just so their party can have the power of the presidency back. Just like the BS Romney is spouting about Obama lowering the work requirement for welfare. He did relax some requirements at the urging of several Republican governors but what the h$ll it,s like the debt ceiling debacle cause the problem then blame Obama and they also got the benefit of bringing down his popularity that was sky high after the death of Osama Bin Laden. Everybody really needs to take a good hard look not at what the Republicans do and quit listening to what they say but at least some of us are onto them.

Taxes, taxes, taxes, its all BS why can't we have a government that lives within its means. they don't need more money they need to stop giving it away, 32 million here a billion there come on wake up, its time to stop the spending. if they do that then we can determine what they need and make a decision on whether or not a increase is justified, we are supporting the world on borrowed money, and it has to stop. I don't like the rich getting away with not paying a fareshare but then again I dont like watching our tax dollars being given away overseas for nothing when things at home need work. Obama has not fixed any thing so, what do you do keep giving away money? that's what he is doing and promising more that is just plane stupid. quit giving so much away. we pay Israel, we pay Palestine, we pay Iraq, we pay Egypt, we pay Pakistan, Afghanistan, S Korea, North Korea (when they behave), Indonesia and the list just keeps going on and on Lebanon, hell who do we not pay, and for what so they will behave, are we being held for Ransom or some thing, conned by thugs? we hand out billions and don't even get a thank youjust another open hand, now even our own citizens are catching on to the game and demanding there entitlements, all the while the Republicans are saying lets stop spending Mr Obama its time to stop spending now. it took both parties to screw this country up, and the Democrats are more to blame, they just like to cast the blame at the republicans. like the liberals it has to be somebody elses fault we can't do wrong. they never did a damn thing right. except lie they are professionals at that.

Obama's plan for taxing the rich does not come close to reducing the budget deficit. Obama pleged to reduce the defict by 50% when he campaigned for president in 2008, instead he has increased the annual deficit by over $500 billion a year (60%+ increase in annual deficit spending). Promises to get elected which the news media does not identify as broken promises

Hmmm....I think I understand why he thinks he is a success.

More people out of work than when he took office, and yet he "saved/created" jobs? How is that possible? Our population isn't growing that fast!

freshieee: I'm glad you admit that Obama is a liar and will say whatever is politically expedient. I guess I've missed the repubs attack on the middle class. No witchrunner, I have paid a lot of attention to politics. I did not mean to say that the Democrats are completely immune to the evil of big money; they are corrupted. However, they are influenced to a relatively lesser degree than the GOP. And enough crap about the stimulus; it saved the U.S. economy from further economic damage. It wasn't enough to get us further along the road of recovery, but at least it took us off the cliff. And personally, I don't care whether the wealthy pay a lot of taxes; that doesn't mean they should be given preferences in our government's policies.

Unfortunately we have several tiers of dems (libs). On the one side of the spectrum are those who have figured out that if they vote for dems they can vote themselves money out of the pockets of other people. On the other side are those who are in power and know that a lot of people will vote to give them power if they promise utopia. However you wish to look at it, there has never been a society where the rulers decide everything that has succeeded in helping the masses. Nor has there ever been a society were power is centralized that has made it's people better off.

Neither has there ever been a society in which sustainable economic growth comes from those who are at the top. I may not be an economist, but I have no recollection of ANY successful society in which sustainable economic growth comes exclusively from the top. None. Don't tell me that Democrats don't understand economics when the other party has pursued trickle-down policies that have FAILED for the past 30 years. And enough with the welfare-giving vote-grabbing crap; I've had enough of your party's disapproval with people on government support. Yes, I admire our nation's rugged individualism, and yes, welfare is full of fraud, but do you ever tire of attacking the poor??? Your party plans to ELIMINATE the social welfare state and have the poor begging on the streets of every town and city in this country. Your party fails to realize that America is also a COLLECTIVIST nation, that we have a healthy mix of individualism AND collectivism in this country, not just one or the other.

You cannot compare the poor of the richest nation on earth to the poor of undeveloped or developing or semi-developed nations (excepting Russia). How about a more fairer comparison; between the U.S. and other DEVELOPED nations. Right here, America has the HIGHEST level of economic inequality in the developed world, and our levels are reaching that of Argentina. America has one of the HIGHEST poverty rates in the developed world, along with the highest costs for education and healthcare. More wealth and income is going into the hands of the wealthiest Americans than in the pat 50 years of American history; hell, economic inequality levels are reaching PRE-DEPRESSION proportions!! And no, we are not a free country. We are not free to criticize our government's actions abroad without being branded as anti-American. We are not free to advocate the legitimacy of labor unions in the economy without being attacked as union cronies. We are not free to demand quality and affordable healthcare or education without being denigrated as moochers and government dependents, nor are we allowed to demand that political elections be free from the taint of moneyed interests and corporate influence without being accused of engaging in "scare tactics" and attempting to undermine the concept of freedom of speech. And most egregious of all, we are not allowed to demand that our government stop catering to the wealthiest Americans and corporations and demand a fairer tax code and domestic policy without being cast as communists, anti-capitalists, haters of the free market, and class warfare-instigators. So no, my dear sir, we are not free in America, at least not this America.

Let me ask you a question: in what world do liberals want to take all of the wealth from the richest Americans?? That in itself is absurd. All we want is a fairer economy, a fairer government, and a society that does not idolize producers and condemns ordinary people. And the ways we want to achieve those goals is not by dictating wages, but through tax and economic policy. We want to stop and reverse the redistribution of wealth from the middle and bottom of America to the top. We want an end to the idiotic concept that "rich people create jobs;" if you conservatives really understood economics, you would realize that the only reason why jobs are created is because of strong demand. Without demand, there is no supply; it's that simple. If I got a $50,000 tax break and decided to use it to hire another worker, how will my business prosper??? Yes, that additional worker might buy some of my goods, but his cost to me will be far more than his benefit. Only if demand increases will I be able to increase employment. And by the way, unions don't set up a cap on production; in the old days (c 1950), they had wages that increased with both the cost of living AND rising productivity. Now we have neither, thanks to the decline of unions.

Enough with the damn comparison between socialism and capitalism. Socialism failed, we get it. Liberals understand that; hell, communists think we are capitalist cronies. And Obama definitely does not represent the former. Socialism in America would include a government-run healthcare system (similar to that in Canada or in the UK). We would also have a govt-run oil company, a state-run airline, a state-run auto industry, and no private schools. We don't have that. Hell, Obama's healthcare reform plan was to the RIGHT of Bill Clinton, and he was a @!$%#ing moderate compared to past presidents!! You conservatives keep using the socialist card over and over again to justify your failed policies, yet you keep ignoring the fact that capitalism isn't perfect. People are bound to be oppressed by their employers without a third-party preventing that. That party tends to be the government, with unions also playing a role. Pure capitalism is no different than pure socialism; both are extremist and are bound to fail sometime in the future. That is why a healthy economy is a hybrid between socialism and capitalism; a strong government that has control over perhaps 30% of the economy and regulations and rules to regulate the system, and a vibrant private sector that abides by the rules but is also free to innovate and succeed. That, my dear friend, is the optimal economy, one in which everyone prospers and one that America used to have. And if things go right over the next few decades, America might adopt it once again.

Dennis: QUIT MAKING EXCUSES!! Obama said he could fix the economy. In 2010 (a year AFTER he took office) he told us we were in the "Summer of Recovery". If he didn't know by then what the economy looked like then he should have resigned at that time because everyone else knew what we had the summer of 2010. Then when the economy didn't recover in 2011 he said once again we were in the "Summer of Recovery". Then in 2012 he blames George Bush.

So enough of the excuses. Obama has failed. He said he knew what was wrong with the economy and he could fix it - he was wrong: He failed. So stop with the excuses. This sounds like 1979 (Jimmy Carter reelection) all over again with always someone else's fault. But when you screw up you take it like a man and admit you failed. This president has failed on every level and to try and go back four years to find someone to blame is pathetic and not a characteristic of a leader. Obama is a failure - period. Accept it and quit trying to find SOMEONE to blame it on.

Obama won in 2008 saying the Republicans "drove the economy in a ditch". But rather than getting the economy OUT of the ditch he just sat there on the hood and smoked reefer for four years. Ummm, if you don't like the economy in the ditch then put forth a plan to get OUT of the ditch!!

Bayllie: This is what is so great about this country. We elect people to run our country. To basically say "Obama sucks but McCain would have sucked more" is a weak and incompetent argument. We elect people we feel would best run this country. The country picked Obama - and he has failed. In life we don't get "reruns" or "do-overs". The country picked Obama and he failed. Now we get to pick another. If Romney wins then he gets to show you HIS plan and ideas. If he fails then in 2016 we have the ability to select another.

You don't keep a catastrophe because 4 years ago he won. No, doesn't work that way. What McCain would have done is irrelevant because we don't know. I think McCain would have done better but that doesn't matter. What matters is Obama was elected in 2008 and said he could fix the economy - he failed.

So now we decide who is better to fix the economy the NEXT four years. Do we pick Obama who has already said he will do the same thing the NEXT four years as the LAST four years (?????) or do we try someone new. Since Obama failed time to give Romney a shot. That is the only Hope and Change we can look forward to.

President Obama was handed a lemon of an economy in 2009. He has made lemonade of it. The lemonade is not a sweet as we would like but getting there each month. It took Bush 8 years to screw things up royally. It is going to take more than a couple of years, more likely at least 8 years, to fix it. Job growth is slow but steady. The stock market has largely been a bull market as it usually is during a Democrat Administration after so many bear markets. Some people seem to think he is some sort of magician where he can wave a magic wand and presto the economy is fixed. It doesn't work that way. It even took Dubya a few months to destroy the surplus left him by Clinton and then in the remaining time kept the downward spiral to where it was in 2008. Had he not turned it in the positive direction I might go along with the idea of him not keeping his word about being fired if he couldn't turn it around. Well, the turned it around.

Despite the obstructionism from the far right President Obama has accomplished far more than one might think. There is a long list but I like the Vice President's take on the Obama Presidency.....wait for it....wait for it....Osama Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive and making a profit.

If money is in the pockets of the 1%, then the great multitude of the middle class will not have enough money to boost demand in the marketplace.

If Romney - the representative of the 1% - takes over, he will allow to 1% to take more money home, leaving the middle class hungry, even less demand on the market thus starving the economy - we'll never see recovery then.

Yep, (2) Mr. Obama sure picked a real winner with Mrs. Romer as his Senior White House Economist adviser. That is why she is back at Berkeley teaching Obamanomics.

Ugh. Probusiness, you know as well as I do that the past 4 years HAVE NOT been a failure. You know that 4.5 million private sector job gains in 4 years is great, along with a stock market that is improving. You know that 8.1% is a helluva lot better than 10.2%, and that 96,000 job gains a month is BETTER than -700,000 a month. And you know as well as I do that had things gone the same way that Reagan did, not in policy but in indirect actions, the economy would be a lot better. That does not mean we need more tax cuts for the rich (or for anyone) and more deregulation; it means that this crisis is worse than ANYONE, not just the president, expected.

Reagan didn't face a financial crisis; hell, the financial industry was less bloated and powerful than they are today (a good thing). Reagan faced a simple recession caused by the Fed pulling the strings and tightening monetary policy, a recession that was necessary to combat the stagflation of the 1970s. All Reagan technically had to do was spend a few billion in infrastructure projects and let the Fed help him out when inflation bottomed out to around 3-4%. When you are in a financial crisis, no amount of cutting interest rates or buying up assets can get your way out of the liquidity trap; you need cold, hard expansionary policy, preferably spending projects.

Now, if your boys had gotten over your sulking defeat in 2008 and decided to cooperate with the Democrats, the economy would be in MUCH better shape, and the deficit would be reduced over the medium-term by $4 trillion. But they didn't; they stonewalled and obstructed and refused to compromise, even when the deal was in their favor. You can blame the President for not doing enough, but you cannot blame him for everything. You cannot blame him for the GOP's obstruction, or for the idiocy of forcing austerity in Europe, or the slow recovery (that was a given).

Sorry but that was before anyone knew that he was handed an economy that was growing at negative 9%, twice as deep as 1980 (the 2nd worse recession with 3 times the manufacturing base for an easier recovery) and the absolute worst economy since the Great Depression.

Sorry, that makes your vote and trust look even less brilliant.

Obama was campaigning that his measures would stop the slide. His measured did NOTHING. That is what pairing up all the numbers shows. Even the CBO agrees with this!

The slide was pretty much over by April of 2009 before the first handful dollars actually hit the street!

Apparently Treasury Secretary Paulson understood how bad it was. His request was $350 Billion with a $350 Billion Reserve. By January 2009 Paulsen had used just $300 Billion (only half of the banks actually needed help and that is another story). Obama and company added another $170 billion, over 2 years with the bulk of it in 2010 when he dumped $100 Billion into smaller banks.

BTW most of those banks DID NOT need the money, just as about half of the Big Banks didn't need the money. What those smaller banks were doing with the money was buying up branches to make their operations larger. Obama though he says he is against corporate welfare is willingly participating in it!

How do I know? My great grandfather co-founded a small town bank in a small western PA town. I still have a relative who inherited the family preferred stock. That relative keeps me well informed in the bank and it's practices.

That is why I have comments on your outlandish posts! I know from the inside of finance what is going on, while you get yours from left wing sources who gain power and wealth from misleading multitudes of people like you, Dennis!

The problem at hand after a crash is allowing things to recover. Your candidate has managed to create the weakest recover of 2 centuries by over regulating and mis-regulating!

For the others typical liberal distractions. Obama has been a failure. 4 years later and higher unemployment, stagnant economy, lowest labor participation rate in over 30 years, 1 in 7 on Food Stamps, 1 in 6 in Poverty, and so on. Liberals try very hard to distract the debate to any number of other topics but that is irrelevant. Obama has failed and the country must decide if we want 4 more years of the same. The answer is no.

Try to distract as you want but the people are smarter than that and understand electing someone who understands how a business and economy actually works is important and Romney will be reelected. Or we can reelect Obama who has already stated he plans to continue the SAME "plan" he has used the LAST 4 years which we look at today and clearly see failed. So 4 more years of failure or we elect Romney who understands what it takes to get an economy growing.

Try your distractions all you want. Try to explain the reasons why Obama has failed. Try to explain why Obama was a pathetic and non-existent leader. Keep trying to explain but the people already know: Obama has failed. Period.

Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, took the oath in Jan 07, he knew, or should have, knew what he was going to be handed. All he did as a Senator is run for President. The fact that he claims he did not know how bad things were only shows that he was incompetent then and now. Excuses and blame is all Obama has done, he refuses to take a leadership role as President. He blames Bush but voted with Bush on TARP. He knew exactly what he was getting into but his ego was to big.

As far as claiming he "inherited" this so called mess, is a damn lie. He asked for it, spent millions campaigning for it and said he could fix it. Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling as a Senator, but expects to raise the debt ceiling as President and chides the Republicans for fighting against his request.

            LIAR LIAR BO

CNN) -- Anyone watching the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night heard the number 4.5 million several times.

"Despite incredible odds and united Republican opposition, our president took action, and now we've seen 4.5 million new jobs," San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, the party's keynote speaker, said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who served as President Barack Obama's chief of staff, and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who followed Obama's November rival Mitt Romney as governor of Massachusetts, both cited the same number.

Sights and sounds from the DNC

It's a big-sounding number, given the still-sputtering job market. So we're giving it a close eyeballing.

            The facts:

The number Castro cites is an accurate description of the growth of private-sector jobs since January 2010, when the long, steep slide in employment finally hit bottom. But while a total of 4.5 million jobs sounds great, it's not the whole picture.

Nonfarm private payrolls hit a post-recession low of 106.8 million that month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The figure currently stands at 111.3 million as of July.

While that is indeed a gain of 4.5 million, it's only a net gain of 300,000 over the course of the Obama administration to date. The private jobs figure stood at 111 million in January 2009, the month Obama took office.

And total nonfarm payrolls, including government workers, are down from 133.6 million workers at the beginning of 2009 to 133.2 million in July 2012. There's been a net loss of nearly 1 million public-sector jobs since Obama took office, despite a surge in temporary hiring for the 2010 census.

Repubs get elected to their office...take the oath to their office,

Then take the Norquist pledge to the rich while spitting on the Constitution and the people they were to represent.

Then they pledge against America when the night the president took office, repubs pledged to vote against any bill that might make President Obama look good in the 2012 elections....

Like traitors to the nation, every repub that took the Norquist pledge and pledged against the nation should resign.

              Sarge,

All the economic facts take a lot of time to be compiled and evaluated. It wasn't until late 2008 that it was determined that the recession started in 2007.

It was 2010 before all the data was compiled that determined how deep the recession was in 2008-Q4 and 2009-Q1 at a negative 9% GDP growth.
Many thing were said by a lot of leaders including both candidates that hindsight proved them to be flat wrong.

In a CNBC interview at the end of July 2008, Alan Greenspan said he believed the U.S. was not yet in a recession, but that it could enter one due to a global economic slowdown.

On December 1, 2008, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) declared that the United States entered a recession in December 2007.

              A FULL YEAR LATER

              Dennis,

Yes the recession started in Dec 07 and ended in June 2009. A lot of people, me included, don't believe the recession ended in June 2009 but much later if at all. With the unemployment rate above 8% and the underemployed and those no longer looking for work at around 15+%, I am sure those people still will say the recession is still here.

Another thing the Democrats won't admit was they, starting in Jan 2007, were in charge of the Federal Budget and was responsible for writing the appropriations bills that run the government, until they were kicked out of the House in 2011.

Lets face it, Obama was not and is not up to the job of President. No one can run the country with the attitude "It's my way or the highway", and further won't even meet with his own parties Congressional leaders.

Obama has been the biggest blamer of his predecessor than any other President in History. He blames Bush for everything that took place on his watch if negative, but, wants to take credit for withdrawing our troops from Iraq, when he knows he had no choice because of the deadlines set in the SOFA signed by Bush and the Iraqi Government.

Obama said he could fix the problem within 3 yrs and if not he should not get reelected, now he is out saying I need 4 more years to finish the job I started. What makes the Democrats think that if he couldn't work with Republicans on major issues in his first 4 yrs what good will 4 more years do with a Congress controlled by Republicans? Do they believe he will stay left of center or move to center and right of center?

Feisty: Nearly 4 years after taking office when we need 150,000 jobs a month JUST to keep up with population growth we added less than 100,000 jobs AND the economy is so bad we had nearly 400,000 just give up looking for work. So unless the "new math" has changed again we have 300,000 LESS people working than the previous month. And you call that a success? Hmmm, maybe it is time to start expecting MORE people working than the previous month? And if Obama calls LOSING 300,000 workers a success then that simply confirms he doesn't understand how an economy works (which is clearly the case - just look at the last four years).

when is the last time Obama met with his jobs council...

tell me, why are the Republicans objecting to bills like:

                S. 3412 (Middle Class Tax Cut Act ) A bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide tax relief to middle-class families.

                or

                S. 3364 (Bring Jobs Home Act ) A bill to provide an incentive for businesses to bring jobs back to America.

                or

                S. 3816 (Creating American Jobs and Ending Offshoring Act ) A bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to create American jobs and to prevent the offshoring of such jobs overseas.

                ?????

During RNC, Romney/Ryan revealed their jobs plan: we will create 12 million jobs in 4 years. Thank you and good night!

We could always go back to the Republican alternative: 4.6 million jobs lost in 15 month alone.

BTW, Romney couldn't create jobs in Massachusetts when THINGS WERE GOOD - prior to the financial meltdown and the credit crisis - so how the f*ck will he do it in 50 states?

He was so bad as governor that even Fox News announced Romney has no chance winning Massachusetts!

The argument is that tax cuts alone are not the answer...yet that is all that you can definitively get Romney and Ryan to tell you they are going to do.

Definitely not a job report to celebrate, but certainly not the worst jobs report ever either. I'm concerned about the people who have left the workforce. Interestingly, if the employment picture improved, it would cause people who gave up looking for work to again be counted in the unemployment rate. So paradoxically, the hiring picture improving will likely INCREASE the unemployment rate. Crazy how that works.

And to those claiming the drop in workforce participation was because of baby Boomers retiring.

But those dropping out aren't so much the discouraged 30-, 40- or 50-year olds. In fact, the Labor Department said there was a modest decline in the overall number of discouraged job seekers.

The drop is because so many young adults, aged 16 to 24, are no longer looking for work.

The employment picture would improve even more if the GOPTP House got off their collective, lazy, tax-payer funded freeloader rear-ends and did something for a change. Compromise is not a 4-letter word, it is not a sign of weakness, it is what is required of Congress. It is how our Constitution was written, compromise is what our founding fathers intended. I've watched politics since the early 70's, actually before but I wasn't old enough to vote, and never, ever have I seen either party decide that winning the next election was more important than helping the American people in times of crisis. 2008 was an epic crisis not seen since the crash of 1929, a near depression and to put it bluntly, the GOP sat on their lazy rear-ends and did nothing. Yes, I mean that! They sat on their rears collecting their paychecks and said NO, we don't care about the people or this country--we want to defeat Barack Obama.

But Jody, they all think that the President governs the Congress! That somehow he controls their thoughts and deeds. I NEVER see anyone on here complaining about their congressmen ... Personally I can't stand any of mine. We've got a "token" Democrat who is running (I kid you not!) on the fact that he DIDN'T support the President on anything! The Congress is full of some very twisted people who claim they LOVE their country but apparantly want NOTHING to do with it (except as you noted, get paid for sitting on their butts!)

I think they might show up sometime this month back in Washington. There is a jobs bill the President sent them some time ago.

How about passing a jobs bill for some infrastructure work?

Is that too much to ask of our elected officials?

Deadbeat Daddy, Joe Walsh climbed out of his bunker a couple weeks ago to attend a meeting with Islamic Americans.

As usual, it turned into a @!$%# show with Walsh screaming & berating them, like only he can do!

The unions were pissed at Obama for having the convention in a non union facility. One thing they weren't pissed about was not having to clean up the heaping, steaming pile of Obamanure that Barrack dumped on the stage. Obama came across as a cross between faith healer and a stand up comedian. I was waiting for him to roll out someone in wheelchair and ask them to stand up but forgot that was Biden's thing.

The unemployment rate is over 8%...The labor participation rate is down. The job market has not recoved. Obama can paint the report anyway he want and he will. There are less people working than when Obama took office. Talk is cheap and Obama is all talk. Results matter. The excuses and the blame to justify Obama's failed policies will not work in the next election. Voters will figure this out.

I honestly wished Obama would've been much better than he has been. I thought he had a great opportunity to steer us in the right direction, but unfortunately that is not the case. In the past 4 years he's managed to split the country on a multitude of political issues all while stomping on the rights of the American people and the Constitution. Obama had a monumental task set before him of turning the economy around and for whatever reason his policies (or lack-of) have not produced results. It's time we elect a new President and hold him accountable just as we did Obama.

The vast majority of job loss experienced on Bush's watch happened the day after the 2008 election when employers had to take steps to prepare for the coronation of his royal highness Barack Insane Obama.

We can expect unprecedented job growth to commence on November 7th, 2012. I suspect the celebration for these turns to begin on January 20th, 2013.

I didn't think I could think any LESS of clown-Obama but his continued babble on blaming someone else is beyond tiresome. A man that has NEVER held REAL job his entire life what does one expect.

With that said, it is most comical to see his supporters take a negative and spin it.... meanwhile if 500k jobs were created we would hear the same clowns say he deserves credit.

Obama, a failed presidency based on the media giving him a pass and sheep that wanted to feel good about voting for an un-experienced minority.

DRC and NorthstarDFL, you are both so right. I checked Obama's voting record in the senate before he took office and I knew right away what kind of president he would be. The man is in WAY over his head and he doesn't know how to reach across the aisle and get things done. The congress, especially Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader (Democrat) deserves a lot of blame that people have been putting on the Republicans. He never allows anything to even come up for a vote. Both him and Obama need to go.

96,000 Americans found jobs in August that they didn't have in July. 30 months of positive, private sector job growth. 4.6 million new jobs in the last 30 months. Bush created 3 million in 8 years despite those massive tax cuts to those so-called "job creators" at the top. How many jobs, that they promised in 2010 if voters picked them, did the GOP House create? ZERO.

The job creators are waiting to see what this idiot will do next - shakey ground does not make a stable building. I work for a non-profit that has laid people off and we can't bring anyone back, want to know why. The wealthy are now holding onto their $$s and not donating like they were before because Obama doesn't think they do any good with their money. I have been here for over ten years and this is the worst it's ever been for us. That's right all you liberals the wealthy support all of the non-profits, it's not your $25 check.

Randy - you're the typical Republican liar. President Obama and our First Lady put their law licenses on inactive status for the time he is President. Otherwise they would have to pay for malpractice insurance and take continuing education courses. Their licenses can easily be re-activated in 2017 when he completes his 2nd term as President.

But, of course, unless you're a liar - you'd know that. When you have to post lies to support your candidate it proves you have NO candidate!

Q:Did Barack and Michelle Obama "surrender" their law licenses to avoid ethics charges?

A:No. A court official confirms that no public disciplinary proceeding has ever been brought against either of them, contrary to a false Internet rumor. By voluntarily inactivating their licenses, they avoid a requirement to take continuing education classes and pay hundreds of dollars in annual fees. Both could practice law again if they chose to do so

That is politics my friend. They're dirty unfair and willing to convince the under-educated that every word that floats off their lips is the truth "so help them God." Some of these politicians are more akin to actors, magicians, or, the always entertaining, mime. Luckily every so often, in the month of November, we get the opportunity to fire them for being the lying, venomous, scum-bag heathens they actually are.

How soon we forget that the last 6 months of Bushs' presidency we were hemoraging hundreds of thousands of jobs per month and no one really said anything about it. We've been in positve territory for 30 straight months thanks to this president and no thanks to Republicans. Why would we ever let them have the reigns again when they've proven to be so irresponsible with the economy in the past. Tax cuts didn't work under Bush...witness stunning jobs losses why do any of you here think they are going to work if Republicans get back into office again. It's a no brainer. Obama/Biden 2012.

Employers knew Bush was leaving so they took the appropriate steps to prepare for what they might get stuck with. On November 5th, 2008 employers found out who they were getting and they acted accordingly.

Most of today’s overly gloomy economic commentary comes from a rather crabbed reading of the jobs report. After all, as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors Alan Krueger said in reaction to the 43rd consecutive month of unemployment above 8 percent, we shouldn’t read too much into just one monthly jobs report.

Instead, look at the bright side. If Americans continue to give up looking for work at a rate of 370,00 per month, the unemployment rate will likely fall below 6 percent by the end of a second Obama term. As Joe Scarborough proclaimed about today’s report, “This is good news for the president.”

                          Obama/Biden 2012 - Full employment through unemployment.

I love watching you guys try to come up with some excuse why Obama should get 4 more years.

We have the Highest corporate tax rate in the World. Business are scared to hire because they still don't know how the PPACA is going to effect them. If the People who wrote it don't even know whats in it, "We have to pass it to find out whats in it"-Nancy Pelosi, how are business's supposed to know how they will be impacted by it?

Thanks to the Frank-Dodd bill, EPA regulations, etc. there are tens of thousands of new regulations business's have to deal with and still don't have any idea how they will be impacted.

Taxmageddan is going to hit January 1st 2013 unless Congress acts to avoid the sequestrations and Tax Increases and what has Obama been doing the last 12 Months?

Running around the Country on Air Force one going to more Campaign fund raisers and events then the last five Presidents total events combined.

The Republican House has Passed 17 bills in 2011, and 30 Bills in 2012 that were sent to the Senate where Harry Reid Pocket Vetoes them without ever bringing them up for a Vote.

The Republican house has passed budgets for the last three years, which they are required to do by Law, while the Democrats have failed to pas a budget in four years. Obama has never had one of his budget proposals receive a yes vote, not even from his own party.

If you want to know why are country is going in the Wrong Direction and were not making any headway all you have to do is Look toward Washington D.C.

More Specifically who has been the Chief Executive of the United States for the last 3.8 Years? Who is suppose to lead the country and set the agenda and priorities? Who is the one that is suppose to work with Both sides and get both sides to work together?

                          highest corporate tax rate?

highest deductions and loopholes = much lower EFFECTIVE rate and PAID taxes:

                          Clara,

                          Try to absorb this:

Obama has been the President for the last four years. Absolutely nothing has improved. If we keep going down this road we will never get out of debt. He even told us, "if I don't turn things around in 3 years, I'll be a one term President". He!!, he's more honest than you are.

I'll use a Left wing site so you don't go into shock. I'll even concede that corporations are actually paying less.

What I won't Concede is that its those Big Bad Republicans that want to lower taxes. Perhaps you should read below were Obama stated he wanted to drop it to 28%, a whole 3% higher than what Romney Proposes.

There's also the fact that Obama has had almost 4 years to revise the Tax code and hasn't done a damn thing to do it. I have no doubt that With Obama its all talk and No walk. We know hes the "Redistribute the Wealth" make the Rich pay More, etc President. Why would anyone believe he would lower taxes?

U.S. Corporate Tax Rate To Be Highest In The Developed World

                          * Japan's corporate tax rate dropping to 38.01 pct on Sunday

                          * Combined U.S. 39.2 pct rate will be developed world's highest

By Patrick Temple-West and Kim Dixon

WASHINGTON, March 30 (Reuters) - The United States will hold the dubious distinction starting on Sunday of having the developed world's highest corporate tax rate after Japan's drops to 38.01 percent, setting the stage for much political posturing but probably little tax reform.

Japan and the United States have been tied for the top combined, statutory corporate rate, with levies of 39.5 percent and 39.2 percent, respectively. These rates include central government, regional and local taxes.

Japan's reduction , prompted by years of pressure from Japanese politicians hoping to spur economic growth, will give that country the world's second-highest rate.

This has triggered complaints from U.S. politicians and business groups.

"This isn't an April Fool's Day joke," said Senator Orrin Hatch, the leading Republican on the Senate Finance Committee.

"Every industrialized country around the globe understands that tax rates can determine whether or not businesses succeed or fail," Hatch said in a statement.

Across most of the political spectrum there is broad agreement that the U.S. corporate tax rate is too high, though few corporations actually pay that rate because the loophole-riddled tax code gives them lower "effective" rates.

Republicans and Democrats agree that the tax code needs work. It has not been thoroughly overhauled in 25 years.

In February, President Barack Obama proposed a corporate tax reform blueprint that included a 28 percent top rate.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has said he wants to cut the corporate rate to 25 percent.

Why would we want to give this man 4 more years when this Country is going to hell in a handbasket at high speed under his previous years.

This Government is the largest business in the USA and it should be run by a business man.

                          Romney gets my vote.

TGMcCallie, I completely agree with you. His dangerous monetary policies are frightening, Ben Bernanke also has to go. We cannot handle anymore of his QE (money printing and buying treasury bills, etc.). The cure they are using will eventually become the poison and our monetary system will eventually collapse. We need to get our money backed by gold again and stop the printing presses. I want a business man, who understands the way the private sector works and has a better understanding of economics. Obama has had his chance, it is time for him to let someone competent take over.

4 years ago Sept 7th 2008, did anyone know the depth of the economic crash, job loss or housing crisis?

Not even any economists knew how bad it was going to be.

But instead of rolling up their sleeves and working with President Obama, the GOP/T-party filibustered more than in the last 50 years.

If there was a decent GOP Candidate with some real ideas, instead of more of the same tax cut's, and deregulation's, if they hadn't pandered to hate and fear, if they hadn't let the GOP party become unrecognizable, to the party of the past. I might consider voting for them!

Instead I'm FIRED UP and READY TO GO! O&JOE 2012!

Once again, the Obama fans have their facts incorrect. Obama had a Democratic Congress to work with when he became president.

If Obama didn't have the leadership in his first term to work with Congress, then what makes you think it'll be any different if he's re-elected. It will be more of the same. In order words, we're screwed if Obama is president.

The argument that Obama is 'cleaning up the mess he inherited' is a poor excuse for lack of results.

Billy - IDIOT - President Obama had a filibuster proof congress for a scant 44 days. The FIRST DAY OF HIS PRESIDENCY the Republicans in Congress pledged to block every effort he made in order to make him a one-term President - to hell with the country. Why are you not angry at the Republicans who failed to work to do anything?????

Bill Clinton's meddling in the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 and pushing through the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. Then Obama used those two laws to push his agenda on the banks through Acorn. Through intimidation Obama and Acorn extorted billions of dollars from the banks.
