Updated 6:40 p.m. - CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sen. John Kerry will launch a broadside against Mitt Romney this evening on an issue -- foreign policy -- that has largely taken a backseat to a weeklong focus on the economy.

Kerry, the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee and the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will cast GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's foreign policy as either incomprehensible or a retread of the Bush administration.

"In this campaign, we have a fundamental choice: Will we protect our country and our allies, advance our interests and ideals, do battle where we must, and make peace where we can?" Kerry will say, according to advance excerpts of his speech. "Or will we entrust our place in the world to someone who just hasn't learned the lessons of the last decade?"

Democrats have criticized Romney for barely referencing foreign policy in his nomination acceptance speech last week in Tampa, making no reference at all to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that stretched must of the last decade. (Romney has defended himself by pointing to remarks he delivered the day before that focused largely on issues of foreign policy and national security.)
Ahead of tonight's speeches, the Romney campaign argued Thursday would be an excercise in rewriting history in Obama's record.
"An inventory of his record shows that by nearly all measures, President Obama has diminished American influence abroad and compromised our interests and values," wrote Romney policy director Lanhee Chen.
First lady Michelle Obama speaks to NBC's Brian Williams about keeping life balanced for her daughters. She is focused on keeping their lives as normal as possible while allowing them to appreciate their chance to witness history.
Foreign policy hasn't been at the forefront of this week's Democratic National Convention, but Kerry will look to turn the spotlight tonight to that issue, on which Obama owns an advantage over Romney in the polls.

Kerry will take aim at two of Romney's central criticisms of Obama in the speech, relating to Israel and the management of the war in Afghanistan. (Romney has accused Obama of throwing Israel "under the bus," and has criticized Obama's timetable for withdrawing from Afghanistan too dangerous, though Romney wouldn't keep a full level of troops there for that much longer.)

"Barack Obama promised always to stand with Israel -- to tighten sanctions on Iran and take nothing off the table. Again and again the other side has lied about where this President stands and what this President has done," Kerry will say.
On Afghanistan, the Massachusetts senator (and potential future secretary of state in the Obama administration) will say: "It isn’t fair to say Mitt Romney doesn’t have a position on Afghanistan. He has every position."

Obama has disarmed our Embassy's and Consulates. But, only to not offend the host country. After all, they do such a great job defending our Embassy's and Consulates in places such as Libya. During President Clinton's speech last night, I was surprised to learn that President Obama delegated the draw down of troops from Iraq. On Iraq, President Obama simply implemented the plans made by President Bush and implemented them by having Vice President Biden deal with it.
I guess we can remove Iraq from the President's foreign policy success column and give credit where credit is due. Good job, VP Biden, for taking care of that one!

Dragon FYI, the Status of Forces Agreement between the United States and Iraq was negotiated by the Bush Administration. SOFA, specifically set the date of 31 Dec 11, as the date to have ALL American Troops out of Iraq. Obama, being a Senator, knew exactly what the dates were agreed to prior to him becoming the President.
Further, President Obama tried to renegotiate the SOFA so American Troops could remain in Iraq past the 31 Dec 11, date. Iraqi government would not agree because the US Military would not agree to give Iraqis the right to put American Military personnel on trial in Iraqi Courts.
If you don't agree with what I stated above, please feel free to prove me wrong. All you have to do is google "Obama's promises on Iraq in 2008". I have pointed out the same thing in numerous posts over the past few weeks and have yet had an Obama supporter reply.

President Obama, in my opinion, has done a good job on National Security and some foreign policy issues. Interestingly, as it turns out, he followed many of President Bush's policies in those areas. Many on the left have expressed discontent with that fact. But I give him credit when he does the right thing.
The only foreign policy Romney understands is war and more war.

Gee, I know there are some folks who simply can not give the President any acknowledgement for any success he has had. Our standing with the world community has been restored and YES even if you do not want to admit it He got Bin Laden even though he did not pull the trigger himself. We don't need to demonize or lie about the President or Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney does have some expertise that could be beneficial to the country and President Obama has proven to be responsible leader. Now do we agree with all of their policies and plans of course not but we can and should demand to see the policies so we can choose the best way forward that is in line with our personal beliefs. As a business owner I am more concerned with getting new customers than getting a tax break. What good is a tax break if I am not generating enough profits to benefit. Other business owners may truly need a tax break because they are making profits and they would rather put someone to work than pay the tax. Either way neither of us are evil and we can compromise so that both of our businesses can thrive. Unfortunately too many folks think it is my way or the highway and compromise is a sign of weakness. I owe less on my credit cards than 4 years ago, I refinanced my home last year and got more equity in my home, I work in health care, so executive bonuses don't effect me, I earn a little bit more than I did 4 years ago, have steady, full time employment, and yes, I have more money in the bank, and more in my 401ks, they have rebounded since 2008, helping my retirement. I can't get a promotion, am a RN, and yes I have had a few raises since 2008. Any other questions....my health premiums have slowed, actually went down...and my twenty something children have insurance while working part-time, going to college part-time, and student loans are still low interest rates. Anything else??? Yes, my middle class family is better now, then in 2008. You wanted to know.

Just to set the record straight.... Kerry spent Less than 6 months in Nam , and less than that out on the Swift boats. Second, all of his requests (his requests) for the PH were disapproved at every command level in Nam... he appealed and through political influence of his family, they were approved in Washington. You will never find a single person, friend or foe, that will tell you that Kerry lost a single drop of blood. I know, as I was there and a senior naval officer (now Capt, USN, retired). Frankly, I don't care whether Rummy or Otrauma get elected, it is already too late for our country... neither man can stop the decline, sad as I am to say that. Just keep it on the level with Kerry and his "associate" Fonda.

This convention has me excited. That's not to say that I've been disenchanted or lethargic in engaging people with whom I disagree. I consider myself a rational American, and actions do speak louder than words. POTUS BHO has been an ACTIVE agent of change that he said he would be - sure, perhaps not as swiftly as we would like - but most of the delay can be squarely blamed on opposition taking immutable non-negotiating non-compromising positions. This is why many democrats became disenchanted, they wanted him to FIGHT right out of the bull pen even if he campaigned on preference towards civility, diplomacy and bipartisanship. I hope his second term is greeted with a full unequivocal majority in both houses of Congress. Fellow GOP Americans, you can still take back your party from the extreme right that, frankly, resembles more of a foreign extremist oppressive theocracy or plutocracy than an American conservative party. GOP - VOTE FOR BHO; throw out the Tea Partiers and reset the stage for a collaborative discussion of visions for this country in 2016. If you don't, you don't stand a chance of being represented by people who really care about your values and interests. Opposition can't argue that it was democracts and POTUS that was inflexible... look at what they have done to their own members of Congress that served loyally but who weren't afraid to work with those across the aisle; they threw them OUT or scared them away! Snow, Lugar, etc... It's time to get the extremist party-of-NO out of the way and get some work done!
As for the topic at hand...
Foreign policy: opposition simply can't compare. Between Biden's experience (which yielded insightful predictions i.e. the threat of domestic terrorist plots, the issue of nation building and a destined Iraqi Federation, etc) and Obama's actions AS POTUS OF USA in delivering results in foreign policy, all GOP will have is hypothetical red-meat flinging pandering fear mongering. Kerry will do a fine job reminding us of that. Rational people will at least consider the reality of facts. Irrational people won't.
