Romney says he doesn't plan to watch Obama's speech

CONCORD, N.H. -- Count GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney among those not planning to tune in for President Obama's nomination acceptance speech tonight.

Romney told reporters today he has not been watching the Democratic convention, and didn't plan to start tonight -- unless the president planned to report on promises made in 2008, rather than conduct what Romney referred to as a "promises reset."

Recommend: With unique place in presidential politics, Biden to take the stage in Charlotte

First lady Michelle Obama speaks to NBC's Brian Williams about keeping life balanced for her daughters. She is focused on keeping their lives as normal as possible while allowing them to appreciate their chance to witness history.

"I think this is a time not for him to start restating new promises, but to report on the promises he made. I think he wants a promises reset. We want a report on the promises he made," Romney said after ticking off a list of what he considered to be Obama's broken promises, including tackling the national debt and boosting job creation.

"The president needs to report tonight on his promises, rather than try and reset a whole series of new promises that he also won't be able to keep," he continued.

The unannounced appearance today by Romney at a veteran's event staged by his campaign -- his second semi-public "drop by" in the battleground Granite State -- included Romney briefly addressing vets gathered to phone bank on his campaign bus. He later talked to a pooled group of reporters and took a handful of questions.

In a new TV ad criticizing President Obama, Mitt Romney's campaign appears to be targeting single women voters who may like the president a great deal but are skeptical if he can deliver the type of change that he was talking about. NBC's David Gregory reports.

Among the questions Romney faced: Why did he choose not to mention the war in Afghanistan during his own acceptance speech last week? Romney parried, saying he addressed the issue the day before, to an albeit much smaller audience, at the American Legion national convention in Indianapolis.

And he said the word "Afghanistan" just once in that speech.

Then Romney took a swipe at Obama for not also addressing the group. "The president was also invited to the American legion, and uh, he was too busy to go," Romney said. "It was during my convention. I went to the American Legion, described my views with regards to our military, our commitment to the military -- my commitment to our men and women in uniform."

Jobs and the economy are the critical issues ... but there is one reality that actually over shadows both for deciding who to vote for. Both parties and all candidates want to convince the voters that they are concerned for and going to successfully turn the economy around, however when you understand and take into consideration their motivation one has to wonder what amount of faith you can put in their words. The Democrats have consistently worked at using government and their power to benefit the people, to minimize the downslide and turn things around - even fighting to over come the stubborn blocking and arrogant faulting of everything by the Republicans. The Republicans have constantly put their political ambitions and satisfying "the money", their strong supporters and masters, above all else, literally at any cost to the people, and just depend on using power, influence and mega-millions to control public opinion.
The motivation: - Democrats are mainly dependent on the support of the people for their power and that is who they have to work to satisfy; - Republicans are completely owned and controlled by "the money" and that is who they concentrate on placating and satisfying. The difference is obvious in things like Ryan's budget which calls for more considerations for the 1% and more costs for the 99% and in Romney's deception with his taxes and in what he questionably proposes, always reflecting his history, his status in and his loyalty to the 1%. There is no hope for real honest representation and consideration for the 99% from the Republicans but the people have to see thru the abundant propaganda in order to understand that and to prevent being conned into supporting a return to "more of the same", Bush-Cheney style, again with the total neglect and substantial costs incurred for the people there. The Republicans have made their irresponsible total loyalty to the 1% obvious as well as their cocky confidence that they can just use the people as "pawns' but it is up to the people to recognize and reject that.

Mitt Romney is a petty competitor. That's why, in the end, he'll come out the loser.

I wouldn't hire Mitt Romney for any position in my company. His bad attitude, his lack of honor, and his lack of compassion make him unqualified to work for me. He certainly isn't qualified to be president of these United States of America.

Ed Craft-1101513 – Totally Agree: So let me see if I got this right: Romney/Ryan are squarely for marriage as defined in the biblical sense (one man & one woman) and adamantly opposed to gay marriage stating that’ it is an abomination of Christianity, God and the American way” and will only heighten the spiraling decay of the moral fabric of America and it’s younger generations…

Except when it comes to “MONEY or DONATIONS” of course … They are (Romney/Ryan) apparently in full agreement that; their God will simply “turn the other cheek, so he doesn’t see them” taking a $1 million donation from one of “Forbes” wealthiest people, who just so happens to makes no bones about his continued support (to the tune of $8.5 million over the years – God bless him!) for the fight for equality in marriage rights or gay marriage (as he loves and supports his son) who was married to his soul mate in Massachusetts in 2009 (as any loving father should do and I commend him for doing so) …

With that said; and being a man of little intellect … the resounding question to me has to be … just how serious do either of them take their faith … One would think that as strongly as they both profess their Christian morals with regards to gay marriage, they would both respectfully decline any contributions from anyone whom they perceive to be out of step with true Christian doctrine and values they so enthusiastically espouse … As for me, that would be the social-moral equitant of accepting a job offer as Public Relations Director of the Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan … Reprehensible … Republican hypocrisy in it’s finest hour!

This is the very reason that Citizens United needs to be overturned … let’s render bribery (lobbying) illegal or make lobbyist have to provide equal funding/expenditures for opposing public arguments (as our voices have no cash leverage) … Boy I bet that would get us back to a more level playing field and put “BOTH” parties on notice … I better be careful I don’t get deported to Albania somewhere under a newly enacted “Papers-Please-Law (heee, heee.)

He probably heard from advisers what the untruths that Obama spit out were and is reacting.

I do not blame him for not wasting his time listening to the sound bites. All he needs is a recap from his people as he probably had better things to do than actually watch.

By the looks of Mr. Romney's lack of stomach or energy to take the fight to the opposition, the Christie/Rubio ticket would have been a more prudent choice by the Republican Party.

It's very difficult to watch someone in your rear view mirror, while headed "forward", Romeny was in the fast lane, and passed the Omobile broken down on the side of the road.

Romney didn't watch because he was afraid he might flip and vote for Obama.

True! Saying he's not going to watch doesn't mean he's not fully vetted about Obama's speech. I bet Mitt has read it cover to cover multiple times. Slippery play on words to avoid technical falsehood...

He doesn't need to watch the President's speech; after all, he needs to be watching his offshore investments to see if they are creating jobs in the Caymen Islands.

I feel the same way about watching Obama's speech. However, in the interest of "being fair and balanced" I did not watch Romney's either. I would rather watch a reality show. It is not as staged (and I don't watch them either). I only hate it that Romney is going to be on "Meet the Press" on Sunday. I usually watch it because I am interested in what people in know in politics think. I already know what Romney thinks.
