First Thoughts: Checking all the boxes

The first night of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., struck a different tone than RNC in Tampa with first lady Michelle Obama delivering an impassioned plea to women and disillusioned Democrats that her husband is still the same man he was four years ago. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

The Democrats’ first night checked all the boxes… It also replayed the greatest hits on Romney… And it told the Dems’ narrative on the American Dream… Breaking down Michelle Obama’s and Julian Castro’s speeches… Previewing tonight’s Bill Clinton speech… Republicans counter the Clinton speech… And Paul Ryan (in Iowa) and Ann Romney (in Ohio) hit the campaign trail.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If you’re a Democrat believing the recipe for the president’s re-election is coalition politics, you couldn’t have scripted the opening night of the Democratic convention here any better. You had your nods to Latinos, young voters, and women -- precisely the groups the Obama campaign wants to turn out in November. There was the message (epitomized by Julian Castro’s keynote) that the election is a choice between two very economic visions. There also was the message (relayed by Martin O’Malley) that the choice is “forward” vs. “backward.” You had plenty of red meat and tough critiques of Mitt Romney (see Ted Strickland). But the evening also was capped off by a personal speech by First Lady Michelle Obama, designed to re-inspire the disillusioned faithful and defend her husband’s record and character. Yet perhaps more than anything else, last night conveyed real passion that we mostly didn’t see in Tampa. Don’t get us wrong, Republicans were fired up last week. But their passion was directed more at the president than Mitt Romney. Last night, however, the Democrats’ passion was focused squarely on their candidate. Elections aren’t decided by conventions, but the Democrats know how to produce a compelling -- and on-message -- night of TV. In short, on Day 1, Democrats proved they are better at producing a convention.

*** Replaying the greatest hits on Romney: Here’s another broad observation about last night: Every speech -- with the exception of Michelle Obama’s -- was equal part an affirmation of Obama and a takedown of Romney. And sometimes, those takedowns were raw and tough. An example was Tammy Duckworth, who touted the president’s national security record but who also pointed out that Romney never mentioned the word “Afghanistan” once in his acceptance speech last week. While the 10:00 pm ET hour in primetime was soft (with the Michelle Obama and Julian Castro speeches), the rest of the evening -- taken as a whole -- was a pounding of Romney. And it was the greatest hits, some of which Republicans will claim were below the belt:  Swiss bank account, tax returns, pioneers in outsourcing, references to Bain layoffs. Even the video tribute to Ted Kennedy was an uppercut to Romney, which led to RNC Chair Reince Priebus to express his disgust for using Kennedy from the grave in an attack.

*** Two different versions of the American Dream: Also last night, almost every speech tried to capture the American Dream. The same was true in Tampa, but the message there was focused on an American Dream to become an entrepreneur or businessman. Here was Romney’s acceptance speech: “Business and growing jobs is about taking risk, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, but always striving. It is about dreams. Usually, it doesn't work out exactly as you might have imagined. Steve Jobs was fired at Apple. He came back and changed the world.” But compare that with the version of the American Dream we heard last night, which was focused more on giving the next generation a better chance. “Barack and I were both raised by families who didn’t have much in the way of money or material possessions but who had given us something far more valuable -- their unconditional love, their unflinching sacrifice, and the chance to go places they had never imagined for themselves.” This was a pure “values” play.

*** Breaking down Michelle Obama’s speech: As for the first lady’s speech, she tried to accomplish three things. First, she implicitly contrasted the Obamas’ beginnings with the Romneys’. “Even though back then Barack was a senator and a presidential candidate, to me he was still the guy who’d picked me up for our dates in a car that was so rusted out, I could actually see the pavement going by through a hole in the passenger side door.” Second, she made a direct appeal to women. “[President Obama] believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and our health care. That’s what my husband stands for.”  And third, she vouched for her husband’s character. “So when people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband, I can honestly say that when it comes to his character, and his convictions, and his heart, Barack Obama is still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago.” As NBC’s Carrie Dann points out, the first’s lady task last night was to have the American public fall back in love with him, too. What the Obama campaign did last night was what the Romney camp probably wishes it did its first night: put your show-stopper last in the primetime.

*** A tale of two keynote addresses: Meanwhile, Julian Castro’s keynote was quite the national debut for the San Antonio mayor. His speech was an appeal to Latinos and younger voters, and he had a great story to tell. But the most striking thing about Castro’s keynote address was that he was essentially telling Obama’s message -- about the American Dream and the vision for the economy. Contrast that with last week’s GOP keynote speech by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was delivering the Christie message, not necessarily the Romney message. It seems pretty clear to us the Obama campaign had a heavy hand in Castro’s remarks. Who thinks the Romney folks had much of an impact on Christie’s?

*** Talking about abortion rights: In retrospect, perhaps the most surprising part of last night was that it had more talk about abortion rights than in any Democratic convention since 1992, the first of many self-described “Year of the Woman” campaign years. Not only did the first lady talk about the importance of women “making our own choices about our bodies and our health care,” NARAL President Nancy Keenan gave a fiery speech about abortion rights. Four years ago, it seemed the Democratic Party was going out of its way to feature pro-life officeholders, like Tim Kaine or Bob Casey Jr., as a way to set a different tone on culture. Fast forward four years later and it’s clear Democrats and the Obama campaign were sending the not-so-subtle message that they believe the secret formula to capitalizing on the gender gap: talk about women’s rights and women’s choices. But that strategy also carries the potential risk of alienating Democratic voters who might oppose abortion rights. This strategy may work in the Nevadas, Colorados and Virginias but in the heavier Catholic states, like Iowa, Wisconsin and Ohio?

*** Bob Casey’s response: Speaking of, one of us interviewed Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey Jr. last night and asked him if he was comfortable with what he was hearing on the abortion issue. Casey: “Well, we have differences of opinion on that but I think what most people are focused on, not just tonight, but throughout the campaign, is the basic fundamental difference about the future of the country.” Translation: Casey didn’t want to get into a debate on abortion -- that much was clear. More Casey on “The Daily Rundown.”

*** Dem platform gets criticized: If the production and scripting of last night’s Democratic convention went without a hitch, the same wasn’t true of the Democratic platform. Republicans and the Romney campaign, the Los Angeles Times reports, seized on the fact that Democrats dropped the language from 2008 recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.  In addition, CBN’s David Brody pointed out that Democrats dropped the words “God-given” from the platform. If there was another criticism of yesterday, it’s that the evening’s tone – outside the 10:00 pm hour – was pretty liberal leaning.

When Bill Clinton places President Barack Obama's name in nomination Wednesday, he'll be up against the Cowboys and Giants, who face off in the NFL season opener. The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports on Clinton's big night.

*** Tonight’s headliners -- Clinton and Warren: The marquee speakers for the second night of the Democratic convention are Massachusetts Senate nominee Elizabeth Warren and former President Bill Clinton. A top Obama campaign official tells First Read about Clinton’s speech tonight, “You’ve seen his speech; it’s the TV ad” the campaign has been airing over the past couple of weeks.  If there’s a worry for the Democrats tonight, it’s that more folks -- precisely the ones the Obama camp wants Bill Clinton to speak to -- are watching tonight’s NFL football game. By the way, NBC’s Brian Williams will be interviewing Clinton for NBC’s “Nightly News” tonight.

*** Countering Clinton: Meanwhile, the Romney campaign and its surrogates are trying to make the case that Barack Obama is no Bill Clinton. John Sununu writes in New Hampshire Union Leader, “[W]hile President Obama and his allies would love to be able to borrow credibility from the nation’s 42nd President, the contrast between Bill Clinton and Barack Obama — particularly when it comes to economic and fiscal issues — couldn’t be greater.” The Wall Street Journal adds, “Arguably the most memorable phrase (not related to a scandal) that Bill Clinton uttered during his Presidency came in his 1996 State of the Union address: "The era of big government is over." And for a few years, it was over. By contrast, Mr. Obama's four years have been spent expanding the government willy-nilly.” By the way, it’s pretty striking to see Republicans praising a man who raised taxes (without any GOP votes) and whom they impeached.

David Goldman / AP

Democrats gather in Charlotte, N.C., to officially nominate President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden as the party's candidates for the 2012 presidential election.

*** Wednesday’s convention schedule: Here are some of tonight’s major speakers:

7:00 pm hour: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan
8:00 pm hour: Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, Reps. Steny Hoyer and Barney Frank, and Govs. John Hickenlooper and Jack Markell.
9:00 pm: California AG Kamala Harris, Sandra Fluke, former employees of Bain Capital enterprises, and Rep. Chris Van Hollen.
10:00 pm: Elizabeth Warren, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Bill Clinton
After Clinton’s speech, Democrats will begin their roll-call votes to nominate Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

*** On the trail today: Paul Ryan holds a rally in Adel, IA at 10:20 am ET… And Ann Romney campaigns in Findlay, OH.

*** Romney’s debate prep: Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is down doing debate prep. Some nuggets from NBC’s Garrett Haake: Romney and Rob Portman (playing the part of Obama) had an hour-long mock debate yesterday, with Romney adviser Peter Flaherty playing the part of moderator Jim Lehrer. And the Romney campaign has given their candidate so many briefing books, they’re enough to fill a suitcase.

In response to her brilliance last night:

First Lady Michelle is true with nothing superficial, and her words go directly to the heart.
Our stunning First Lady is grounded. She cares deeply about others.

What on Earth does it take to live so gracefully in the 24/7 media spotlight?

Thank heavens for this extraordinary couple, First Lady Michelle and President Barack Obama - standing up for all Americans, for all our futures, and a middle class for the 21st century.

I watched the fact-free Republican Convention. Ryan's lies and Romney's lackluster comments made the case that Republicans have absolutely no ideas on how to move the country forward, just disdain for President Obama.

Last night I watched the first night of the Democratic Convention and listened to speaker after speaker comment on behalf of women, the middle-class, and the benefits of hard work. Tonight Past President Bill Clinton will call out the Republican lies regarding welfare and work. Clinton will send a message that will resonate with all Americans.

I am proud to call myself a Democrat!

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS:

2008: Palin/McCain robocalled right across America, calling their opponent a "terrorist".
And in that same GOP zero-truth, zero-conscience tradition, RyanRomney have taken up another nation-wide robocalling scam: This time, telling MORE LIES - about Medicare.

The robocalls tells dirty lies about our President "taxing wheel chairs and pace makers, and raising taxes on families.."

The robocalls LIE about their AynRandRomneyRyan Medicare plan, saying it will "protect and strengthen the program" for the future.

The truth is that RomneyRyan want to transform guaranteed Medicare into a depreciating 'premium' voucher system, that will lead to the end of Medicare. Until then, their plan for Medicare would cost seniors another $6,400 per year = for the SAME plan they currently have. Meanwhile, Romney's plan to repeal Obamacare and move back to the old system of overpaying private insureres, would cause Medicare to become insolvent by the end of 2016.

The truth is that it is RomneyRyan and the *ghost of Ayn Rand* who plan to "change the program forever".

Because in their eyes, seniors are moochers who must be left to barter for their own health care even during the golden years of their life. And if our seniors run out of resources - too bad - they are on their own.

Backhouse, well said. Michelle Obama's words were powerful; her message simple yet compelling. I thought the line that the Presidency does not make the man, but instead reveals the man was perfect among many other terrific, quotable lines.

Let's face it.

The whole line-up last night was better than ANYTHING the Republicans put on stage last week. I would have rated none of them -- including Mitt Romney -- any higher than a 5 to 7, solely based on rhetorical style. I rate everyone I saw last night between a 6 and a 10. Add in substance, which was sorely lacking among Republicans, and subtract out the phony and self-righteous references to God and "America," as if the Republicans owned both, and last night was a clear knockout winner over the entire Republican convention.

Except, perhaps, for Clint Eastwood. The Democrats couldn't have scripted that any better.

And, yes, JoAnna, I lied. Here I am again. But not to spar with you.

Have a great day, everyone. Can't wait for tonight.

Who was that man Michelle was talking about last night? Haven't seen anyone like that. What we see is this divisive, detached, political hack that blames his problems on everyone else. An old-school tax and spend far-left out of the main-stream extreme liberal that is spending the country into a debt it may never recover from. A glory seeking big government, government first, taxpayer last, radical leftist that thinks he has all the answers but doesn't even understand the questions.

Obama is nothing but an empty suit that "fills" an empty chair belching out empty words and empty promises. He does not produce results. That's the guy the country sees. It's not clear who Michelle was talking about.

DNC Video says "The Government is the only thing we all belong to"

Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gLa9Te8Blw

Really? And here we all thought the government belonged to us, so the Democrats again have it exactly backwards and wrong (a common theme for them). There were many that thought we all belonged to the British government way back when too. Good thing we didn't listen to them either.

I didn't really expect a speech from the First Lady that did anything more than praise her husband. It was, however, a very nice speech and it sure provided a stunning contrast to Ann Romney's.

One comes across as an honest-to-goodness woman. A real woman who can pitch in and work to get a job done. One who knows her own mind, who is not afraid to make a decision, who has the courage of her convictions, and has earned her self-confidence.

The other is a Stepford wife, an appendage, a woman who doesn't project any power of her own.

Of course, we're not voting for wives, but I sure prefer a candidate who is married to a partner not an employee.

The Democratic convention is going very well.

Having the national debt clock running in the background at the Demmie convention was a nice touch. Signs in the crowd celebrating the record number of people now on food stamps was also very progressive. $4.25/gal gas prices in Roselle IL certainly demonstrates the President's energy initiatives are working as well as we all expected they would. We just need another great unemployment report (those numbers are supposed to be increasing, correct?) and it will make it a perfect week for the Democrats.

Congratulations on putting on a great show Democrats! One for the ages. The Stone Age.

I will never be able to call her Michelle again. After last nights speech. she will always be Mrs. Obama to me. She deserves no less. I've heard thousands of speechs in my lifetime ( including JFK's graduation speech at San Diego State College in the early 60"s ), but I've never heard a better speeh than Mrs. Obama's last night.

It was the topper to two excellent prior speeches by two extremely talented speakers. Senor Castro's speech was outstanding. He's a rising star.

Wow!!!! I was surfing through some channels this morning and I thought that the DNC convention was on in full swing early in the morning.

I surfed one channel and I heard "John Edwards you are the father" and looked up and saw it was the Maury Show. Then I surfed a few more and I heard "Michelle get the hell off my stage" and I jolted said to myself now that makes sense because the voice sounded like Biden but it was the Steve Wilkos Show. Whew. I had to surf on before I vomited and I looked up and said to myself now this has to be the DNC convention because there were a bunch of hookers and transvestites fighting but no. It was the Jerry Springer Show.

It was easily mistakable since those shows had stages full of trash and degenerates that I thought it was the DNC Convention.

Nice to see Rahm Emanuel again. The Chicago Mayor, leader of the city that is the murder capital of the country and mayor of the largest city this year with a pending teachers strike, will now be taking leave of his duties as the "Best Mayor Ever" to pursue the most important job for the Democrats, fund raising for Obama.

The Big Lie

A few days ago an obscure Democratic functionary compared Paul Ryan to Joseph Goebbels, the infamous Nazi propaganda chief. His contribution to the political discourse was to suggest that if Republicans like Ryan tell the big lie often enough, then eventually people will think it's the truth. The Obama campaign threw that guy under the bus immediately, but the damage was already done: Republicans are liars, and you better believe it.

Fast forward to yesterday's opening of the Democratic convention. If last night's speeches were any indication, then we're going to be looking at Goebbels on steroids over the next few sessions. Consider their treatment of the iconic notion of "the American Dream."

Michelle said: "Barack knows the American dream because he has lived it." OK, I'm sure he does. But no more than Paul Ryan who came from humble roots, lived through the tragedy of losing his father at an early age, yet persevered to grow up to be a candidate for Vice-President. Or Condi Rice who stirred the Republican convention with her story of the young girl who couldn't get a hamburger at Woolworth's but nonetheless grew up to be Secretary of State. Or Susana Martinez who still can hardly imagine how the teenager who helped guard parking lots at church Bingo nights grew up to be a governor.

Julian Castro said: "The American dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon, but a relay. Our families don't always cross the finish line in the span of one generation. But each generation passes on to the next the fruits of their labor." Quite true, yet exactly how is that idea a central characteristic of Democratic philosophy but not a similarly important tenet of Republican philosophy? I guess second generation (Republican) Americans like Rick Santorum or Marco Rubio don't count in your view of the world.

Corey Booker said: "if you are a citizen of the United States of America…you should be able to give your children the kind of education that allows them to dream even bigger, to go ever farther and accomplish more than you could ever imagine." Same question to you Corey, where do you get off implying that Republicans don't embrace that very same view? Or do Republican parents somehow think their kids should quit school after 8th grade and get their butts into the work force?

My point is that Democrats don't have a copyright on the American Dream, it's a path available to all regardless of political persuasion. Yet the Democrats would have us believe that only they are the true stewards of that dream because they are the only ones who have experienced it and understand it. That's a big lie, as Ryan and Rice and Martinez and countless other Republicans would attest. Yet that lie was repeated in various forms over and over again last night, relentlessly pounded into the polity in the hope that folks will think it's the truth.

Goebbels would be proud

Michelle Obama's speech was honest and heartfelt. Her words moved me and brought tears to my eyes. Has America ever had a finer First Lady? I don't think so.

As a woman who grew up in limited financial circumstances, she had the backbone, the intelligence and the moral support of a devoted, hard-working family that allowed her to earn the finest education we offer in America.

As a woman with her own career, she knows precisely what American women face in the workplace. As a wife she has supported her husband through thick and thin, allowing him to keep leading America forward in our difficult times. Behind every good man is a woman!

As a mother she has unfailingly put her girls first in her priorities, and the results are obvious: two fine young ladies who will undoubtedly grow up to achieve great things, as both their parents have done. They are the fulfillment of the American dream and its promise of opportunity that draws people here from every corner of the planet.

Yes indeed, Michelle Obama is a national treasure!! We have no finer example in our country of a woman to admire and emulate than our amazing First Lady, Michelle Obama! We owe her a huge debt of gratitude for all she has sacrificed on behalf of our country.

Thank you, Mrs. Obama!

Good thing politicians know how to run a convention cuz they sure as hell don't know how to run a country unless it's into the ground. Politicians are a boil on the butt of every good American. They all need to be locked up for the safety of us all.

I have heard so many LIES in these two conventions it make me PUKE. If even one of our p.o.s. pols ever told the truth they'd melt into the pile of crap they are. JUST TELL US THE TRUTH. STOP THE LIES.

Even the video tribute to Ted Kennedy was an uppercut to Romney, which led to RNC Chair Reince Priebus to express his disgust for using Kennedy from the grave in an attack.

I'm sure that Ted Kennedy would have loved it. Mittens wants to kill the Affordable Health Care Act that Kennedy had put so much effort into getting passed, although he died before the bill reached the Senate.

You are the reason that we need to fund education in this country! You are the reason that I and a lot more people like me left the Republican Party as it has become a party of hate filled, moronic individuals who for the most part don’t have two brain cells to rub together to create enough friction to formulate an independent thought let alone any measure of compassion or even sensibility as you so eloquently demonstrated in your post!

I don't normally defend JoAnna, and Lord knows I have no reason to defend her after the vile things she said to me yesterday, but I am hoping that line about the treasure was supposed to be metaphorical.

Like Khrushchev saying, "We will bury you." Or something like that.

But anyway. If not, then maybe she should stay away for a day or two and reflect.

Heck. Maybe she and Sirie could hole up in her lair and they could exchange notes.

Even among conservatives, there's always room for improvement. And JoAnna could apparently learn a lot from Sirie.

Bill, Fairfax, VA: Michelle said: "Barack knows the American dream because he has lived it."

Odd, isn't it? As her husband burdens future generations with more and more debt, Michelle talks about the 'American dream'. How can anyone have that dream or that future when they'll be made to pay for the government spending of today? College grads are living in their parents houses because they can't even find a job. Massive numbers of Americans are unemployed and in need of government assistance. Is this the American 'dream' Michelle talks about'?

So Michelle's pitch is that her husband needs four more years? Why would anyone want to give this abject failure another four years? "I see it in his eyes, he cares about people"....sure Michelle...do you see this in his eyes as he neglects his job to campaign nonstop for years...or go golfing...or go on vacation? When exactly do you see this Michelle?

What has Obama done? Where are the factcheckers pointing out that Castro's speech had plenty of lies in it regarding how many jobs have been created and the state of the economy?

No...all I heard all night was "blah blah blah, tax the rich, blah blah blah, tax the rich"

So tell me, if you tax the rich, and get that extra 70 billion...what exactly do you plan on doing with it Mr. President? Spend it on another Solyendra? Give Pakistan more aid? Send it to Mexico? Give it to the illegals for their healthcare? Create ten more union jobs? Build another high speed rail?

Are you getting the point liberals? This president has accomplished NOTHING in four years except for raising campaign funds for this election. Why would we give this FAILURE another four years when we're holding on by our fingertips right now?

Who was that man Michelle was talking about last night? Haven't seen anyone like that. What we see is this divisive, detached, political hack that blames his problems on everyone else. An old-school tax and spend far-left out of the main-stream extreme liberal that is spending the country into a debt it may never recover from. A glory seeking big government, government first, taxpayer last, radical leftist that thinks he has all the answers but doesn't even understand the questions.

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but that President Obama never really existed, except in the imaginations of the Right-Wing.

The real President Obama has supporters who reach across almost every demographic group, which in my book makes him a "uniter". President Obama represents more than just "older white males".

The real President Obama makes the tough policy decisions, foreign and domestic. The real President Obama has proposed a balance approach to reducing the deficit, relying on spending cuts as well as tax reform and tax increases.

The real President Obama was born in Hawaii, loves his country, loves his family, and loves his God.

Obama is nothing but an empty suit that "fills" an empty chair belching out empty words and empty promises. He does not produce results. That's the guy the country sees. It's not clear who Michelle was talking about.

Michelle was talking about the real President Obama, the one that most people in this country see and support. You won't find him in Romney's commercials or anywhere on Faux News.

JoAnnaSmith1,

Have you ever taken the time to wonder where we would be had the Republicans embraced "Country First" instead of Party First on their path of obstructionism? ever wonder how many jobs would have been created had they voted for funding jobs bills instead of their platform of "One-term President"?

ever wonder where this nation would be had the republicans raised taxes to pay for their wars or the tax cuts or the Pharma Bill? ever wonder where we would be had the Republicans shown one measure of fiscal responsibility? The money that Obama spend was spent to curb this nation from going into an all out depression - how would your kids or the future generations have faired in that???

The debt will get paid down when we get people back to work, paying taxes instead of receiving assistance, when corporations and the upper 1% start to PAY their fair share instead of punishing the middle class for not beinf as successful as them!

Let's see, just yesterday the national debt reached $16 trillion, unemployment remains high and we're still embroiled in expensive wars overseas. And this is the result of the past four years, lock, stock & barrel. But even with the proof in the pudding, you're enamored over a speech, the color and make of her dress, and the other empty rah! rah! rhetoric that will spew out of this convention, ignoring the truth that we're worse off than four years ago... and you want four more? Wow.

I hear what you are saying. I imagine you will tune into the debates, which will be more substantive.

But, I will say, you missed hearing the First Lady and Mayor Castro articulate the difference between the Democratic philosophy and the Republicans'. That's important, too. It was apparent, at their convention, Republicans define success strictly in terms of how much money you make. Romney's biggest praise was for stay-at-home mothers (who can afford to do that?) and successful businesspeople. When he says "we built that" he's talking about real estate developers, not masons, carpenters and other construction workers.

Democrats recognize the value of work for itself. Just because someone is a CNA, or a pre-school teacher, or a carpenter, and they don't make much money, doesn't mean they are less-than a capitalist, a CIO or a hedge fund manager. People should not go bankrupt, just because they get sick and they work at a job that doesn't offer good health insurance. Making sure senir citizens have affordable healthcare is not negotiable. It's not a handout - it's our duty to provide for the elderly.

Tonight Past President Bill Clinton will call out the Republican lies regarding welfare and work. Clinton will send a message that will resonate with all Americans.

If he does use the "L" word (lie), I'd be interested to see if the media would censor him for using that bad word, even though it truthfully describes Romney's entire campaign. The media seems to have ignored the fact that Ted Strickland, former Ohio Governor called Romney out for "lying" and that David Plouffe said that Romney's campaign was built on a "tripod of lies" on ABC Sunday morning. The media apparently don't think they can let anyone use the word "lie" on TV because it would draw too much attention to the fact that Romney's lying is totally unprecedented in modern presidential elections.

@ProFreedom -- The sad reality is that even losers (Democrats) can dream.

It seems the left has no sense of humor. From an earlier collapsed post:

Wow!!!! I was surfing through some channels this morning and I thought that the DNC convention was on in full swing early in the morning.

What small minded people who wish to censor others and their opinions. I don't even know how many hits it takes to collapse comments but Newsvine ought to change the way it's handled for fairness for all.

No one could have asked for better speakers to kick off the Democratic convention. I noticed right away the electricity in the air - the excitement and the belief in what they are there for. It was in stark contrast to the subdued, no excitement the Republican convention held.

The crowd represented our country - diverse in every way. We had young (many of them); old; black; hispanic; asian; white; representatives from every walk of life. Our military were represented as well as our veterans.

When Julian Castro spoke you could clearly see our past, present and our future. We will be hearing from this man again - in a BIG way!

Then we get to our country's treasure - our First Lady. She held the audience from the moment she walked onto the stage. She glowed with excitement. She spoke warmly of the man many of us have come to love. She talked about their challenges as a family and his as President. And, she gave us an insight into the real man he is.

To me the perfect close was the photo of President Obama sitting, listening to his wife's speech with his arms around his daughters, beaming with pride.

There was such a stark contrast to the GOP convention that was so filled with hate and jealousy. There was no excitement - no life in the Republican convention - just whines and pointing fingers, but never in their own direction.

I can see why posters like Bill, JAS, WCA, are so nasty today. They clearly see their party represents nothing but lies and hatred. Their party has no life - no future - only yesterdays.

What an outstanding evening! It will be worth the long hours working to get this President re-elected so the hope and promise of this evening can continue. We can't go backward to the hate and fear the Republican party sells so openly and so viciously. We can't return to the party of small ideas and small people who care about no one. We can't and we won't!

Nice censorship you Democrats - the party of CENSORS.

Glad you brought this up this morning. I happened to see a piece on Fox News this morning talking about the President's (allegedly) failed energy program. They displayed a screen covered with the logos of energy companies with a headline to that effect (something like "Obama's failed energy program" as I recall - don't quote me but it was decidedly negative). It included Evergreen Solar, and Solyndra, of course.

But half the logos were from companies that are thriving, like Tesla Motors and A123 Systems. In fact, one logo was for NREL - the National Renewable Energy Labs, which is a government agency.

So, I decided to check it out on Fox News website. Not only could I not find the story, but I discovered that Fox News doesn't allow reader comments at all.

So, let's talk about your censorship comment, shall we?

There is no defense for the comments from Sirie but where is the outrage when Jen (Fiesty) goes off on her bigoted anti religious comments that are just as bad. How about her anti women comments that personally attack Ann Romney? At least be consistent in your indignities.

Anna Molly--you really didnt think Artur Davis, Nicky Haley or Chris Christie were passionate great public speakers regardless of whether you liked the message? Do you not see how conservatives can view Michelle Obama's speech in the same light as Ann Romney's as less than genuine based on their behavior outside of the conventions? When Michelle lives in the a $2 million dollar house in Hyde Park funded by a political fixer now in prison, while her husband plays 100 rounds of golf in 3 years while having the most difficult job on the planet, she is wearing designer clothes that cost in the thousands and now acts like she and her husband identify more with regular people? You want to say what? In what way given that your husband's policies have done more harm for these same people than any GOP politician could ever achieve. How have his economic policies worked out for the poor and middle class as african american unemployment has skyrocketed, middle class incomes have been destroyed, he continues to support teacher's unions preventing any real education reform to close the education gap but in defense he says well at least I am protecting them by giving more food stamps, welfare and government assistance. So he and his wife feel their pain right? What a bunch of hooey.

I didn't find the convention one bit funny. All I saw was a bunch of lapdogs singing the praises of Obama and themselves, like they are all that. I didn't hear a peep about unemployment other than they think they have some sort of off odd plan to increase job growth. I notice nobody mentioned the national debt, and if they did, it was mumbled and immediately blamed on the republicans.

I did see plenty of self aggrandized praise for democrats doing liberal things... innuendo about how they are the party of gays, women's rights and diversity... what ever the hell diversity means to a liberal... meaning they love everyone but the right... some diversity.

Of course there was plenty of spin. I guess that is to be expected since they were playing tunes their audience love... Much like a rock concert to fans. As far as fact checkers go... I'll wait until Biden speaks... I can't wait to hear what Clinton has to say since he can't stand Obama... must be an Arkansas thing, or possibly a Hillary thing...

While the liberals sing the praises of Michelle, I'm sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house... In my house there was plenty of cat calls for the ingenuine blather she was putting forth... Of course she was attempting to tug at the heart strings of democrats by telling tales of how hard it was for her and Obama in their early life together... well big deal Michelle... take a look around... there's 23 million people unemployed who are struggling... I couldn't care less how much you struggled because your story is much like so many others... What really baked my cake was how she bragged on how her husband wants to work with republicans... I guess she forgot that he told them to sit in the back of the bus. How convenient.

Tonight's festivities will be interesting, but tomorrow night's will take the award in audacity. I understand Obama will be speaking in front of a backdrop that looks like stained glass. I suppose it's to make him look all ethereal. Much like the god (lower case g) that the liberals hold him up as.

The American dream is not for anyone stoop down and hope for a trickle down crumbs from any rich man or corporation dinning table that's if there is any.

How right you are.

THIS is the true American dream, articulated originally by a wealthy Republican capitalist named John D. Rockefeller. And THIS the American dream that I heard articulated on that stage last night, rather than the fractured fabrications cooked up by phony baloney neo-Republicans, like JoAYNa Rand Smith, in order to justify their own greed and selfishness.

"I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living, but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living."

Exactly. And as Michelle Obama embellished on that theme last night, once you've achieved your own success, you don't slam the door on those behind you.

THAT's the part that neo-Republicans, like JoAnna Smith, REALLY don't get.

They want to slam the door on you.

If you have a genuine interest in debating policy with people who's thoughts may differ from yours, then why bring up the coverage at all, and not just focus on engaging with other posters?

Everyone Else,

I don't see why Dems are worried about rape victims, (from the women in the audience) I didn't see one that really needed to worry about getting raped... just sayin'

This is one of the sickest things i've read. Rape doesn't only happen to attractive women as you insinuate. Can we finally move into the 21st century and support victims of the most violating act one human can put another through instead of trying to demonize the victims?

@Dont_carry_it_all

So, you're proud of the failure of the current administration to rectify these messes and, if anything, make them worse. Good for you.

Just as an exercise go look at www.debtwatch.org and write down the number you see under 'national debt'. Take a break for awhile, then come back and write down the number you see again, noting the amount of time elapsed. It's not decreasing, is it? If anyone in office was capable don't you think the number would be decreasing instead of the opposite?

Kirk --

Anna Molly--you really didnt think Artur Davis, Nicky Haley or Chris Christie were passionate great public speakers regardless of whether you liked the message?

In a word, no. They are none of them either great speakers, from a rhetorical perspective, or great thinkers. They have no real passion or compassion. They do not connect with average voters. Nikki Haley in particular is phony baloney and stupid, like Sarah Palin. She thinks South Carolina is a model of the private sector. Is she kidding? Where does she think all those Boeing jobs come from, let alone all the other government contractors who operate in her state. Obviously, she left her intelligence on the cutting room floor.

Chris Christie -- after the big bag of wind got through bashing teachers, he had not much else to say. He is selfish, ignorant, arrogant, angry, and clueless, especially about the fact that crushing teachers didn't exactly save New Jersey, which is now #4 in national unemployment. He was running for something, but it wasn't Mitt Romney. He didn't mention Romney until 1800 words into a 2600 word speech, and then only once.

If that's the best you've got, Kirk, you should be worried. VERY worried.

Why don't we discuss, for example, the relative speaking merits of Marco Rubio and Julian Castro.

Well, don't worry. I won't blame you if you don't want to.

Anna Molly--and there is nothing preventing anyone from using self reliance and personal responsibility to create their own business and work hard no different than any immigrant coming over to take advantage of our free market system. Again, I know you are a labor person but you have never offered a defense for the need for government unions with collective bargaining rights at the state and local level when FDR didnt want them for the obvious reasons at the federal level. All your progressive policies sound so great in writing and in text books but how do they play out in the real world? How are things for the poor, minority and middle class under Obama's economic policies? How has it worked out in California, Illinois and NY where Obama's economic policies have been in place for years? Its not a matter of achieving success and slamming the door behind you--give me a break that such BS rhetoric that is just not how it really works. Open your own small business and maybe you can experience the real world for once.

I mean, if you're admitting Obama didn't create the mess, you're by default admitting that the prior administration did, and what did that administration do? Oh yes, tax cuts, deregulation, and war.

What's the opposite of tax cuts, deregulation and war?

AM--there you go again creating labels. I didnt think Marco Rubio was very good but I also dont enjoy the southern preacher style of public speaking that Julian Castro used. I totally disagree in that I thought Christie was very good and he attacked teacher's unions not teachers and I think you know that. His economic performance as governor is clearly worthy of discussion and debate but as you go down that path, you need to use those same arguments to evaluate your presidential candidate dont you think? You need to be consistent in your methodology. I thought Nicky Haley was good but not great but definitely good and Artur was fantastic. You just hate the message so much that you cant be objective. See I am a Clinton fiscal conservative so I look for similarities in both parties to him. The problem is that both parties are filled with ideologues that have skewed the rhetoric to the point that neither party represents me. Romney is closer to my views than Obama at the moment just like Clinton and Kerry were in previous elections.

As for the private sector--you always want to go back to the Obama line as if the government builds or creates everything. Whether Boeing does a ton of government contracting work doesnt make them any less of a private enterprise and especially all of the ancillary small businesses that are created to service these jobs. You act as if everyone doesnt have the opportunity to avail themselves of private enterprise. You chose to be a lawyer, so can others.

Bain & Co. itself got a $10 million bailout from the FDIC:

The Federal Bailout That Saved Mitt Romney

Government documents prove the candidate's mythology is just that

Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-federal-bailout-that-saved-mitt-romney-20120829#ixzz2542ZJRd2

Mitt Romney likes to say he won't "apologize" for his success in business. But what he never says is "thank you" – to the American people – for the federal bailout of Bain & Company that made so much of his outsize wealth possible.

According to the candidate's mythology, Romney took leave of his duties at the private equity firm Bain Capital in 1990 and rode in on a white horse to lead a swift restructuring of Bain & Company, preventing the collapse of the consulting firm where his career began. When The Boston Globe reported on the rescue at the time of his Senate run against Ted Kennedy, campaign aides spun Romney as the wizard behind a "long-shot miracle," bragging that he had "saved bank depositors all over the country $30 million when he saved Bain & Company."

In fact, government documents on the bailout obtained by Rolling Stone show that the legend crafted by Romney is basically a lie. The federal records, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, reveal that Romney's initial rescue attempt at Bain & Company was actually a disaster – leaving the firm so financially strapped that it had "no value as a going concern." Even worse, the federal bailout ultimately engineered by Romney screwed the FDIC – the bank insurance system backed by taxpayers – out of at least $10 million. And in an added insult, Romney rewarded top executives at Bain with hefty bonuses at the very moment that he was demanding his handout from the feds.

Whatever the exact number of unemployed is, I guarantee that it's a lot lower than it would have been under Bush:

This was the CNN Money headline in Bush's last month of office:

Job loss: Worst in 34 years

Employers slashed 598,000 more jobs in January as unemployment rate climbed to 7.6%.

Here was last month's number from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 163,000 in July.

There's your choice.

The only way the GOP can win is LIE!

My oh My! I watched five minutes of the speeches (actually self praise) and have no opinion to pass other than this.

What I noticed in what little I heard was that these secular people sure throw the GOD word around a lot when they spend the other 51 weeks of the year doing their best to protect islam from bullying in the press and taking all reference of GOD out of EVERY level of govt, including the very Dumocratic Convention they're speaking to. Yes, I know about the meetings where it was decided to only use the word "religion" in the platform creed.

Michelle says Obama Knows what the American Dream is because he's lived it. Of course he has, with his mentor like Frank Marshall the communist and Bill Ayers the terrorist. These people are heroes to the Obama's and many of the Demoncrats. No doubt they'd like to see our country spelled with a backwards R and and a K to replace the C, like the Rober Urich miniseries about 20 yrs ago. Yeah, that sounds cool, doesn't it?

Bill, Fairfax, while you posted an honest and thoughtful view from your side, I must take exception to it. First, do I think all republicans think the way their politicians do? No, but I don't see conservatives here demanding they change direction either. Maybe democrats get the impression that republicans are against the American Dream for all because of their anti-education, anti-poor, anti-middle class, anti-elderly, anti-children's health, anti-immigrant, anti-minority rhetoric.

Perhaps democrats would not view the GOP in such a negative light if their budgets did not reflect massive expenditures for the military while slashing funds for everything else; massive tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires while adding trillions to the debt and burdening the 99%. Oh, and did I mention, Mitt Romney and the GOPers constantly demonize teachers, fire and police. I trust the GOPers were proud last week as one speaker after another pointed their fingers at other Americans and said, see, it's their fault we are in troubled times; blame the teacher, the fire or police, blame the unions, blame the Latinos. In fact, Mitt actually said we don't need more fire, police and teachers. So if the "opportunity" is taken away for all through budgetary cuts, it is only reasonable that we assume the worse about republicans. Michelle Obama said it last night, once we have seized the opportunity available, we cannot slam the door shut for others (not exact quote). Republican policies slam the door shut.

Democrats get the impression that the GOP's version of the American Dream is limited to a few because their policies, their platform lacks compassion and fairness, lacks good sense. Their policies, their words and their budgets prove their real values--once upward mobility is achieved, slam the door and keep giving to those who already have while taking from those who have not. Starve the beast, and we starve opportunity for all, we eliminate the American Dream by starving it to death. In other words, their shiny words of promises are not reflected in what they do. As with Ronald Reagan, the political ideology of the GOP is less important that whether the ideological rhetoric matches their actions--it hasn't for 30 years. Ronald Reagan is why Jody, Iowa, became a democrat. Democrats aren't perfect, they have flaws, too, but their words more closely align with their actions whenever they have the power to enact them.

AM--I am never right? Interesting--so its not just a matter of having different views on fiscal policy. So since I am pro gay marriage, pro choice and think Clinton was a great president. Somehow I bet you think I am right about those opinions? But the fact that I believe more in self reliance, personal accountability and responsibility and dont believe its the governments job to addict us (corporations, individuals of every economic class) to government welfare and assistance is wrong? So I am wrong about how the poor, middle class and minorities would answer the question "Are they better off since Obama took office?" NO. I suppose you would like to ignore the contradiction by Obama supporters that talk on the one hand about how much economic growth there has been since Bush left him with a poor economy with the nanny state facts of such huge increases in trillion dollar welfare programs and the number of people currently addicted to his "free stuff".

The USA needs a budget? Democrats do nothing and blame the GOP

How do you propose we balance a budget without revenue increases? Please show me the math that makes fixing our debt possible without raising revenue.

I guess if a child goes missing at the DNC, no one will look for that child but EVERYONE will blame someone. Nice Democrats.

Speaking of this. Missing and exploited children are the jurisdiction of the FBI, which you know, takes federal spending to run. And federal spending, is you know, dependent on revenues.

- say the words "uterus" and "vagina" as often as possible. Really? With 25 million people out of work - Obama can only think about women's body parts? That is his second term??

916 Bills in total INTRODUCED (that means brought up) by the GOP congress. The democrats wouldn't be saying anything about reproductive rights, if the GOP hadn't taken such measures to bring them up.

- have all the Democrats who arent paying taxes (Romney has paid his taxes, I know you Democrats CAN NOT STAND anyone who pays their taxes) get up and speak. Rangel? Hasnt paid in 7 years. He is allowed to speak???

So, you believe we should raise taxes on people under the poverty line, but allow millionaire and billionaires to pay less then the middle class? Does that work? Because I feel like that's what we've done for about 30 years, and here you are complaining about the economy. Either you should be happy, since your chosen economic theory is and has been in place, or you have to admit it doesn't work.

- listen to Democrats say they are "christian", "pray" to a god, and then understand that the DNC has TAKEN GOD OUT OF THEIR PLATFORM. GOD WAS NOT ALLOWED IN THEIR PLATFORM. Pleeeeez Democrats, explain that hypocrisy. No God in the platform, but countless references to a "god" in speeches. TYPICAL DAILY DEMOCRAT HYPOCRISY

You don't understand the difference between personal belief and public policy, do you?

Lets go democrats - let's protect womens health as we allow them to kill their babies, lets scream about Romneys taxes while we allow our members to ignore tax law, lets ignore God, but talk about a "god" in all our speeches.

Please show me credible, scientific evidence, accepted by the global scientific community, that abortion equals baby killing.

Wow - the DNC gave us a spectacular example of how to reach average Americans last night. Mrs. Obama is a NATIONAL TREASURE to be cherished. Indeed, she is an inspiring example of what it means to be privileged - privileged to be born in this country, privileged to acknowledge the opportunities available, privileged to use those opportunities to excel and become exceptional, and most of all the privilege to thank this country, America, for providing the supportive environment to achieve those goals. What a stark contrast to the RNC, where they all have this faux fight to "make it" despite every supposed roadblock the country put up to block their path.

Thank you President Obama for passing the Healthcare Act. You paid a dear price, the wrath of the Republicans, but you made it possible to continue the dream of pursuing 'life, liberty and happiness'. Despite the claims of misery and despair of the GOP/TP, it was truly an effort of that benefits all Americans.

And Ms. Duckworth, what a truly inspirational speech. To think so many people support deadbeat foulmouthed welfare queen dads vs. selfless contributing members to society is astonishing.

Keep up the good work DNC, day one was truly spectacular and a far cry from the self-centered rambling spewed daily, last week, by the RNC. Go America - Obama/Biden 2012.

Kirk - Let's talk about all that "free stuff" for a minute.

It's easy to throw out derogatory labels, isn't it?

Because the "free stuff" Ryan wants to cut out includes:

Pell grants - so lower-income students have a chance to go to college

School lunch programs - so kids get nutritious meals so they can learn

S-CHIP - so that kids get vaccinations and preventive care

SBA loans - so small businesses can start and grow

Renewable energy tax credits - so we become more energy efficient, don't fall behind the rest of the world and end up oil dependent forever

Food stamps - so that people living in the richest country in the world aren't starving in the streets

Teach America - so that qualified people can help school districts in need of qualified teachers

Etc. etc. etc. etc.

No mention of that $100 BILLION a year we spend in corporate welfare, though.

Do you really think the oil companies need another subsidy while all the above go away?

Michelle Obama was exposed last night, for the fake-phony-fraud that she really is.

Her speech was fractured, and pedestrian.

It was filled with the I-I-I and ME-ME-ME that we've gotten used to with her husband these last three (3) and a half (1/2) years.

Hey Michelle, your husband and his pals have done a lot of crowing about Mitt Romney's tax returns lately.

But, where are yours and Barracks college records? Why are they "sealed?"

Who financed your Kenwood home?

How good a friend, really, is Barrack with William Ayers, and Tony Rezko? Do you actually think it's reasonable for a US President to have had relationships with people who set off bombs in federal buildings, burned a state supreme court judges home, and who were convicted on 16 counts of political racketeering?

Oh, and one last thing, Michelle; are you still "finally proud" of your country?

I would say that your figure is more attributed to the democrats than the republicans just by the math.

And if saying things made them true you'd have a point. The math disagrees, though perhaps not the religiously-based "divine math" books currently being peddled to the Christian Right home schooling crowd;

January 11, 2012. Republicans blame the "Democratic Congress" for their debt increases. The trouble is that Congress was only Democratic 8 out of the 20 years, and in those 8 years, on average, Congress passed smaller budgets than the Republican presidents requested. The specifics are all right here: It Was the Republicans.

So, let's add up the debt under Reagan and the Bushes. We can't blame Reagan for the debt's increase until his first budget took effect, October 1, 1981. Then, for 12 years until Sept. 30, 1993, the Republicans ballooned the debt. Later, George W. Bush took over.

  • Under Reagan and Bush: $3.4 Trillion increase in the debt.
  • Under George W. Bush: $6.1 Trillion.[1]
  • Total: $9.5 Trillion. (without counting interest)

But wait, there's interest on that debt ...

Just like a mortgage, the debt earns interest, and so the Reagan-Bush-I debt grew during the Clinton years. The average debt interest rate in those years was about 6.5%, which would increase it over 50% without compounding, but with compound interest the total debt – including interest – increased by $2.2 trillion.

  • Total Republican debt from above: $9.5 trillion
  • Interest on Reagan-Bush debt under Clinton: $2.2 trillion
  • Interest on $11.7 trillion after G. W. Bush: $0.3 trillion
  • (detailed calculation)
  • Grand Total Reagan-Bushes Debt: $12 trillion (as of Sept. 30, 2010).

If the Republicans had not run up this $12 Trillion debt, we could easily have pulled out of the Great Recession.

AFTER YOU READ THIS, SHUT THE HELL UP

EEngineer

It doesn't take much intelligence to look at the last 3 and a half years. Has it worked?

...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.

April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.

DJIA Dec 26, 2008 8515
DJIA Aug 31, 2012 13090

Dec 29, 2008 (Bloomberg) U.S. corporate earnings fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.

May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

AND THIS,

EEngineer

As the The Center for American Progress Action Fund reported, working with numbers from the Congressional Budget Office, "Paul Ryan supported nearly all of the budget-busting bills of the last decade."

CAP also reported:

In January 2001, before any Bush administration policies had been passed, the Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, was projecting budget surpluses totaling $5.6 trillion over following decade. Instead, we got cumulative deficits totaling $6.1 trillion, an $11.7 trillion difference. CBO estimates that laws passed by Congress and signed by Presidents Bush and Barack Obama are responsible for $8.5 trillion of that difference. Rep. Ryan cast his vote for about 80 percent of that $8.5 trillion.

NOW THIS

So, how do the actual Obama annual budgets look?

Courtesy of Marketwatch-

  • In fiscal 2010 (the first Obama budget) spending fell 1.8% to $3.46 trillion.
  • In fiscal 2011, spending rose 4.3% to $3.60 trillion.
  • In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
  • Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion. Read the CBO’s latest budget outlook.

Now shut the hell up, its not just obama spending but its Bush as well and Ryan we there for it all and voted for 90% of it.

so i will start calling the deficts Bush, Obama and Now Ryan!!!!!

Brianb --

Maybe the republicans need to learn how to treat women... after all the liberals claim the republicans have a war on women.... I suppose they should take their cues about women from Bill Clinton, John Edwards and Teddy Kennedy... they were real men that knew how to treat women. Wouldn't you liberals agree?

No group of people is entirely pristine, and that includes Democratic men. But none of the men you mention, not a single one, has ever advocated for anti-woman policies.

On the other hand, as I told Kirk and Tax Man up above, I cannot think of a single Republican man that I particularly admire for the way he treats women, or for advocating for women, or for being a friend to woman.

Not a single one. Not one.

And I certainly didn't see any on stage in Tampa last week. Au contraire.

Hey! To all you Yomama lovers why don't Obama and his Liberal's just put everyone on welfare, that will solve everything. Michelle has got a lot of balls stating that the voters serve the Government when in fact we voters are the bosses and pay their salaries. When I heard that crap out of her mouth that just made me change my mind about the Left/Democrats and I am a Independent who will not vote for the Democrats. No one running for President in the last 30 years has shown less than 5 years of tax returns.

I see no reason to start now.

Can you imagine the Republicans saying to Obama, "Never mind, Mr. President, we don't need to see your tax returns." ?????

H Y P O C R I T E S

What Obama got in college thirty years ago has no bearing on this election. Where Romney keeps his money, who he gets it from and how much he pays in taxes DOES!

DCIA posted this:

Household Survey Data

Both the number of unemployed persons (12.8 million) and the unemployment rate (8.3
percent) were essentially unchanged in July. Both measures have shown little movement
thus far in 2012. (See table A-1.)

Duh! You don't get it do you? This is the U6 data. The government official unemployment payment numbers... There are an additional 11.2 million unemployed that have fallen off the roles... therefore there are 23 million unemployed people in this country.

AM--so its ok for you to label me but you get indignant if I come close to doing the same to you. Come back to me when you have lived small business for 50 years and have expanded, contracted, dealt with every employee issue you can think of. But the gall you have to be indignant after your constant assumptions and labels toward me. Further, your method of debating still hasnt changed which is why I prefer the yellowdogs of the world who actually dont ignore substance and the arguments they dont like and pick out one thing that they can attack like you do. Actually Scott Walker and Christie have done very well in private job creation which admittedly has been offset by government jobs. But dont you realize that maybe we dont need those government jobs and its taxpayer money paying for those jobs and maybe that money is better off in the pockets of those who actually earned that money? Maybe if you kept more of your Wisconsin earnings, you would be able to hire another associate? You always ignore the economics and both sides of the equation and focus on the individual emotional example that fits your views.

Besides coming truly from the heart of a caring and compassionate woman, there's a reason why Michelle Obama's speech resonates so strongly;

The Obama's are the height of the American Dream.

Everything about the story she told speaks to the American Dream. It's about rising from modest beginnings to whatever level your hard work, intellect, character, and a little bit of luck can take you. That's what is so inspiring, and no amount of whining, complaining, and outright character assassination by Conservatives can change that.

What Conservatives CAN change, should We the People allow it in November, is to pub one more needle in the heart of the American Dream. Romney/Ryan's intended destruction of Medicare and Social Security diminish the dream. Telling young people to borrow money from their parents to go to college if they can afford it, otherwise forget college diminishes the dream. Doubling down on trickle down economics for the umpteenth time since the dawn of Reagan diminishes the dream. Allowing the "Creative destroyers" from Wall Street, ALEC, and the like to write our laws and buy our lawmakers diminishes the dream.

The GOPTP focused on looking "looking back" for a reason. If they can keep us looking back we won't see where the future they envision will take us. THEIR future will be a dark future indeed.

ZMan - you show yourself to be more of a moron every time you post. The college transcripts - we've gone over this hundreds of time. But once more for you since mental midget is apparently your true name. EVERYONE's college transcripts are sealed. Everyone's. Transcripts have NEVER been asked of any other President - why now? My transcripts are sealed. Had you ever gone to college yours would have been too.

No other President has ever been asked for his Birth Certificate but the loonies on the right HAD to see Obama's. Seeing a pattern here????

Their home was financed by a bank - it's called a mortgage - most homebuyers get one.

William Ayers actions were when Barack Obama was a child. He was a mere acquaintance of Obama's because they both were professors at University of Chicago. Rezko has been discussed over and over - get a life!

You are a truly despicable little man with no intelligence whose jealousy of the man in the White House has overtaken any civility and integrity you might - at one time - have possessed.

You really need to seek professional help. You're truly a pathetic little man who has very big problems.

Oh, the quote from Michelle has been debunked over and over again. But, of course, you knew that!

RAF said: brianb - What you don't understand is that there's a big difference between one man cheating on his wife and a party platform that declares it's going to enshrine anti-women policies on millions of American women as a part of our laws.

In case 1, the guy's wife has every right to fight back. And in case 2, we all do.

There's no difference in the platform at all. If you are going to hold one republican to your standard, you also need to hold all democrats to the same standard. The three men are ICON's of your party. They need to hold the same standard and if they don't, you should kick them out if they violate the rules you set.

So you see RAF, I do understand. You exhibit hypocracy and double standards if you allow men to violate the rules you set for the other party. Abusing women, being accused of rape, fathering children out of wedlock and allowing women to die under your charge, are all violations of the standards you set for other people.

We Obama supporters aren't going to change their minds. We cannot fight their hatred with internet posts. We need to turn off our computers and head for the nearest OFA headquarters. We need to register voters, call voters, knock on doors, and get out the vote.

Some day, those haters will thank us for having the clear vision and guts to save our country from the GOP vultures who want only one thing: power.

Real American First--well lets put that into context why dont we. Government assistance for all of those programs is up over a trillion dollars almost 100% more than when Obama took office under 70 different government assistance programs. Ryan wants to cut the RATE OF GROWTH in those programs and cut those that should be cut as the economy gets better. If Obama's economic policies are working, dont you think those programs should be cut? My guess is you understand better than you let on. No GOP candidate advocates for cuts to programs such as Pell Grants below where they are today so stop embellishing and tell the truth. I am all for cutting out government welfare to corporations, energy companies including green energy tax credits. Green energy shouldnt get welfare as it should become viable economically the way all products do.

Sara--I am pro choice but there is a huge difference between being pro life and anti women. Just because someone believes for religious reasons or their version of morality that a human life within the womb is worth protecting over the right of an abortion doesnt make them anti women. Just as someone like me who doesnt believe that the equal pay act sponsored by the democrats is anything other than a disguised gift to their benefactors the Trial Lawyers Association isnt anti women. Just because someone who believes that women should have the right and access to contraceptives but should pay for it themselves and not by the rest of us, doesnt make us anti women. I have to pay to purchase a box of condoms, you should pay for your lifestyle choice. If employers want to include it within their insurance plans as a way to provide a benefit to female employees good for them but it shouldnt be mandated. When the GOP wants to defund Planned Parenthood and make it a solely private charity, we are not anti women when we see planned parenthood no different than any cancer, childrens health, AIDs etc charities and they should compete for private money the same as all other charities.

Jeff - You simply don't get the job numbers do you? While you tout a 4.2 million job net gain, do you know what those numbers are supposed to be in order to keep up with population growth?

The normal employment numbers need to be 250,000 per month. I realize you probably don't understand this. While it appears as though 4.2 million jobs is a hefty number, it's half of what is needed. Do the math:

40 months X 250,000 = 10,000,000 jobs. This does not include the numbers of lay-offs and firings.

Since it takes 10 million jobs to fill in the same space of time, the job shortage is 5.8 million jobs.

This is exactly why conservatives are not impressed with Obama's performance and look at the liberals point as not valid. Liberals are spinning the numbers to try to make Obama look good, when in reality, he's a pure failure. Anyone receiving a grade less than 50% is a failure...

Man can I agree with that statement... Nobody knew who Obama was before he was president, but he sure has revealed who he is. He has revealed that he keeps his liberals in tow, since they adore him, while at the same time exhibits the qualities of a person who hates anyone who opposes him. It revealed that he hates capitalism, republicans, conservatives and anyone who disagrees with his ideas.

Seeking Sanity--sorry but none of those issues have been clearly discussed or debunked. Nobody and the media doesnt dig into the Tony Rezco financial dealings. We have Jen and others making fun of Romney's religious affiliation with the Mormons but Obama attended Wright's church for decades and we shouldnt dig into that in a similar manner. Your views on Obama's relations with Ayers is just wrong and they have known each other far better and longer than you try to brush off.

Nobody really cares about Romney's taxes but people like you who arent going to vote for him anyway. But it is relevant to find out if Obama got all Cs in economics or really isnt as smart as you guys like to hold him out to be or what his social affiliations were and what economic policies he truly understands. He can easily release on his own his transcripts so stop the brush off. At least be consistent in your approach. But I know I am stupid and an idiot and low information voter. By the way, I am still waiting for your defense of Obama's economic policy for taxing foreign earnings? You keep avoiding anything substantive dont you?

    Oh What A Convention Night!!!

I’m still catching my breath from First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech. I was so proud of my fellow Chicagoan put emphasis on the lifestyle she grew up in which still hasn’t changed her. I particularly loved the part in the film when her mother told how First Lady Michelle Obama’s would happily jump out of bed to get ready for work. Wasn’t it wonderful for her to speak the truth? I ♥ed this part of First Lady Michelle Obama's speech:

“So when people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband, I can honestly say that when it comes to his character, and his convictions, and his heart, Barack Obama is still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago.

So when people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband, I can honestly say that when it comes to his character, and his convictions, and his heart, Barack Obama is still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago.

He's the same man who started his career by turning down high paying jobs and instead working in struggling neighborhoods where a steel plant had shut down, fighting to rebuild those communities and get folks back to work…because for Barack, success isn't about how much money you make, it's about the difference you make in people's lives.

First Lady Michelle Obama touched the heart of America.

Real Americans First--give me a break. You can play that silly game forever and it makes no difference to how you or others will vote. Of course Obama didnt give millions to Wright's church because he is one of those liberals who dont practice what they preach. He acts like he cares for the plight of the poor but does nothing personally to assist. His charitable donations were negligible until he ran for president. I dont care about Romney's taxes outside the years required by law. I would much rather understand the academic standing of our current president during his formative years.

American Girl--Romney/Ryan are not advocating tax cuts for the wealthy as they advocate a more fair equitable tax code and the elimination of loopholes and deductions so lets discuss the same facts. Blacks may want to vote for Romney because his economic policies will actually give them jobs and reduce unemployment and government assistance. How has the Obama policies worked for African Americans so far? I suppose if your measure of success is based on how we have enlarged the safety net to ensure that we can create more of entitlement state, rather than successful job based economy, you might vote for Obama as a black. I didnt think you liked the government telling you what to do with your body so why do you feel its ok to reach into the pocket of anyone wealthy or not and take the money they have earned even beyond a50% tax rate? If you are working wealthy, Obama wants to tax you with state taxes over 50%, you somehow find that ok?

    No, that's not true.

We have a net "private sector" job loss since the recall election -- both June and July -- not even accounting for additional losses in public sector jobs.

June (11,700 private sector jobs lost):

And, in any case, by now, wouldn't you think it would be the other way around?

There's NO difference Sarah. Your party's platform is to say the republicans have a war on women. This is like me saying I have a war against you because we have ideology differences. While we have well structured arguments, there is no war. Particularly because I have it in me to argue my points like you do... take it larger... to claim that someone has a war on women while totally ignoring the MAJOR scumbags in your party is a double standard. It doesn't matter what the method is. Even you admit that the 3 are scumbags... which totally surprises me to hear it from you.

Could it be that a few scumbags in the republican party have tried to impose their beliefs about women, in a wrong way, is interpreted as the entire party feels that way? I seriously doubt they all feel that way. Ask the republican women.

The entire premise of the democrats is to obfuscate discussions on the economy.

      Ol_Doc --

Speaking of the "Stone Age", how did the American Taliban rise to such a prominent position in the Republican Party? Such a prominent position they are able to inject their "biblical law" into the Republican Platform. I'm curious as to how the American Taliban and the Neo Conservatives (current resurgence) will get along in the upcoming Republican "blood bath" to obtain Ideological Purity? ...and who's ideological purity?

I'm particularly interested to see how this will play out among Hispanic voters. Marco Rubio was as full of old-fashioned Bible-thumping God as I've ever seen in a national political speech. But Rubio may very well have lost his chance to bring God into the lives of everyday voters. The challenge to his rise as the new spokesperson for God will come mostly unlooked for, from the west, in the form of two brothers with the unlikely, and unfortunate, name of Castro, neither of whom had very much to say about God in their speeches last night, but both of whom, we know, are probably Catholics, too, at least on some level.

The difference between Marco Rubio and Julian Castro does not bode well for Rubio's ambitions, or for his God's either, I'm afraid. In 2016, Texas will be a swing state, and Florida may not matter so much anymore. Rubio's 15 minutes of fame, and that of his God, may just about be up.

      Brianb --

This entire comment is total poppycock. And the reason we don't need to ask Republican women is that we have SEEN Republican women. They stand for whatever they're told to stand for.

Every day, there's a new Republican maggot Congressional candidate who appears advocating for prosecuting women who have been raped and had an abortion or some similar ignorant drivel. To say the party is not infested with these maggots is to refuse to look under the rocks.

Find me ONE Republican man in a position of authority who has had the guts to stand up against the maggots -- not just by lip service. I challenge you to find me ONE whose everyday stance is in favor of women's rights to choose and who advocates for women's access to affordable health care, or for equal pay, or for any other issue that benefits women.

Find me ONE who hasn't been cowed into submission and silence by the maggots.

Heck. Find me even one Republican WOMAN who has not.

And maybe then you'll have something to say.

AM--there you go again cherry picking your arguments. You totally ignore virtually every substantive issue response by me that isnt consistent with your labels or your original so called factually based post. So you cherry pick the Wisconsin private job creation and call me a liar. Those same links in which you also cherry pick months show that Wisconsin created jobs in 2011 and created net jobs so far this year but you show the months where there were net job losses. Now compare that to Obama's policies in which we keep bleeding jobs as his monthly jobs added arent even enough to keep up with the new people coming into the work force. You cant be critical of Walker without also then being critical of Obama. I still ahvent heard your passionate defense on how he and his wife are more in touch with the comman person and how well those common people have done under Obama's policies.

I dont give a flying **&^^ whether you understand me, your problem is that your mind is shut and closed off from learning and understanding of facts outside the emotional connection to individual plights that get your tear ducts moving.

Wow, I see some really thoughtful posts. And the typical GOP rhetoric because they got whacked last night and they know more to come. Their hate is coming home to roost and they have a hard time hearing it. Face it GOP your extreme right wing stuff is not the way to move FOWARD, Not Back. Face it, you need to quit hating all the groups that are dominating American and not just angry white bearded guys. Did you see the diversity in the group last night, they were engaged. The difference in the two conventions right now is night and day, no comparison, sorry dudes you lost day one to more than the storm. To deny it means you have nothing to offer. Give us something to talk about, not just GOP talking points which are quickly loosing steam. GOP women, your choice is more clear than any other, let go of the hypocrisy and vote your real self.

Sorry, but I have yet to see them say anything to make a draw on independent or conservative constituents. Preaching to the choir and finger pointing is just immature. We all know who's had the majority since Jan 1, 2007. Having Bill Clinton to represent the side claiming the stereotype of all non-Obama voters as members of a "War on Women" is just hilarious.

Can we get one Democrat on stage with a mic that's going to reveal the "plan" for going forward? Just blaming the other party isn't a plan. Spending so much you have a trillion dollar annual deficit DEFINITELY isn't a plan.

Kirk -- We were talking about since the recall, which occurred in June. But since you insist, if you take the net total job creations over the first year and 3/4 of Walker's term, you'll be at about 28,000, give or take a few. His promise was for 250,000 over 4 years, and I doubt that reality has kept pace with new workers coming into the workforce, any more than it has nationally.

I don't see YOU producing any numbers for New Jersey, so we'll just have to go with my understanding which is that New Jersey now ranks #4 in unemployment. Obviously, New Jersey can't be creating private sector jobs at a fast enough rate to offset public sector losses, or you'd think we'd see some improvement there. And what public sector losses, Kirk, if you consider that Christie has taken credit for ramming his demands for concessions through on public employees, like he claimed during his RNC speech? Aren't they all just happy campers that still have their jobs? What happened?

It's pretty anemic when you compare Wisconsin's numbers to other traditionally blue states like California or Michigan, for example. You should look that up. Job creation in Michigan since the GM bailout is a very pretty picture. Wisconsin, on the other hand, is weakest in the entire Midwest for job creation since Walker has been in office.

I don't blame Obama at the same level as Walker because Obama's only major sin was not to make the stimulus larger. His heart has always been in the right place, but Congress had admittedly and deliberately obstructed him at every turn. Just witness the jobs bill that has been languishing in Congress for the better part of 2 years, and remember that tax rates now are even lower in some respects than they were during the Bush administration. Also remember John Boehner saying that HE got 98 percent of what HE wanted during the debt ceiling deal. This one's on your side, Kirk. From inception to the present.

On the other hand, I feel justified in blaming Walker because he claimed that he had the right idea, and unlike President Obama, he pretty much got his way on everything. In that sense, he's responsible for his own failures in a way that President Obama is not. That's just the reality, Kirk.

As for my tear ducts, I don't generally exercise them over you.

The plan of Ryan, Romney and repubs going forward is forward with more lies.

When Fox news rips Ryan for his lying at repub convention, you know Ryan is a grand ol liar like his money mate!

Inciteful Sally at foxnews.com wrote Aug 30th,

On the other hand, to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryan’s speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. On this measure, while it was Romney who ran the Olympics, Ryan earned the gold.

The good news is that the Romney-Ryan campaign has likely created dozens of new jobs among the legions of additional fact checkers that media outlets are rushing to hire to sift through the mountain of cow dung that flowed from Ryan’s mouth. Said fact checkers have already condemned certain arguments that Ryan still irresponsibly repeated.

Fact: While Ryan tried to pin the downgrade of the United States’ credit rating on spending under President Obama, the credit rating was actually downgraded because Republicans threatened not to raise the debt ceiling.

Fact: While Ryan blamed President Obama for the shut down of a GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin, the plant was actually closed under President George W. Bush. Ryan actually asked for federal spending to save the plant, while Romney has criticized the auto industry bailout that President Obama ultimately enacted to prevent other plants from closing.

Fact: Though Ryan insisted that President Obama wants to give all the credit for private sector success to government, that isn't what the president said. Period.

Fact: Though Paul Ryan accused President Obama of taking $716 billion out of Medicare, the fact is that that amount was savings in Medicare reimbursement rates (which, incidentally, save Medicare recipients out-of-pocket costs, too) and Ryan himself embraced these savings in his budget plan.

Elections should be about competing based on your record in the past and your vision for the future, not competing to see who can get away with the most lies and distortions without voters noticing or bother to care. Both parties should hold themselves to that standard. Republicans should be ashamed that there was even one misrepresentation in Ryan’s speech but sadly, there were many.

Well there you have it, Ryan stoops so low he gets ripped by Fox news writer....

      Anna Molly said:

No group of people is entirely pristine, and that includes Democratic men. But none of the men you mention, not a single one, has ever advocated for anti-woman policies.

On the other hand, as I told Kirk and Tax Man up above, I cannot think of a single Republican man that I particularly admire for the way he treats women, or for advocating for women, or for being a friend to woman.

Then you are totally biased Anna. Here's something to think about. Since the entire democrat party has adopted the I hate republicans because they are in a war with women... tell me how Bill Clinton, John Edwards and if Ted Kennedy were still alive could agree with them since they have all mistreated women. Sometimes in the worst possible way.

Here's where you aren't thinking... These men represent the top echelon of the democrat party. If they can't adopt the democrat platform, what does that say about democrats that still hold them in high esteem. It says that democrats are selective in their posturing. That is what makes them hypocrites. It's OK for 3 high level democrats to treat women like crap and kill them, but it's not OK for the republicans to take a stance that is different than their ideology.

Again the missed point is the democrats are bringing this up as a political ploy in order to divert attention away from Obama's mishandling of unemployment and the economy. That is the prime issue, not women's rights.

Only in the GOP's America would this girl be $250,000 in debt and in danger of losing her medical treatment:

Doctors Bewildered By Mystery Illness That Causes Woman to Grow Fingernails Instead of Hair

      Read more at http://www.medicaldaily.com/articles/11407/20120809/medical-mystery-nails-hair-allergic-reaction.htm#u2a7gVohQG8sHDS0.99

A young woman has been labeled a medical mystery after developing an unidentified illness which causes humans nails to grow out of her hair follicles.

Shanyna Isom fell ill to the debilitating condition after suffering an allergic reaction three years ago, leaving her struggling to walk and unable to carry out basic daily chores.

The 28-year-old had been working toward her law degree when the nightmare began in September 2009. She had suffered an allergic reaction to steroids given to her to treat her asthma, and within hours she was itching all over and black bumps covered her legs.

Doctors had treated her for everything from eczema to Staphylococcal infection as she was slowly being eaten alive by the mysterious skin disease that doctors have yet to diagnose, and she was soon bedridden as the illness took over her life.

It wasn't until 2011 that doctors in Baltimore established that the bumps covering Isom's entire body were in fact human nails slowly covering her body.

She described her condition as a nightmare she is trying to wake up from.

"They’ve tested me from A to Z and everything was coming back negative," she said. "As of right now, I am the only one in the world with my illness."

Isom's mystery condition has left her and her family deep in debt as state-issued insurance does not cover her treatment at the specialist unit in Baltimore and only covers five of the 17 medications she is prescribed.

She owes about $250,000 in outstanding medical bills, and she fears that she may not be able to continue her treatment.

Barbaric? The majority of Americans say "YES!"

Anna Molly, there you go cherry picking again. You really want to compare either Wisconsin or New Jersey to California or Michigan or why not throw Illinois into as well. Are either Wisconsin or New Jersey bankrupt because all of those states are? The fact that they have created more jobs from such a huge trough in comparison doesnt change the fiscal mess all of your blue states are in. By the time the blue states are forced to eliminate their public sector jobs, the calamity will be far worse than what you see in Wisconsin or New Jersey. I dont understand why you think a public sector job is a good thing in of itself? You really think taking money out of the poor and middle class at the state and local level in addition to the working wealthy and give it to the state to create government sector union jobs whether we need them or not is somehow better than keeping it in the hands of those people who earned it and create more private sector jobs? How well as that worked so far in your blue states?

Sorry but Obama has had plenty of opportunity with a democratic congress since 2007 until he blew it in 2010. Stop with the obstructionist GOP as Clinton seemed to have no problem working with them. If Obama wasnt such an ideologue and willing to compromise, he could too. The plain hard cold truth is that his policies have only made things worse for the people he acts like he cares for the most unless you consider creating the entitlement state as a good thing.

You definitely are an angry woman today. I got news for you my wife is pro choice, pro gay marriage, half jewish woman raised in a lower middle class home who used sports in college at a very good private university and attended law school and worked at a Chicago law firm. She wouldnt vote for Obama if her life depended on it but trust me she hasnt been silenced into submission by any "maggot". She is a litigator and understands that at no point in her career did she make less money than a man in her same position and totally understands that the equal pay act is only a bill for the Trial Lawyers Association as the laws on the books already prevent discrimination based on gender. She also doesnt believe the government should pick winners and losers in charities so she writes her own check to Planned Parenthood and thinks the government shouldnt subsidize them. She also thinks she already has and so do poor women all the access she needs to birth control but doesnt think everyone else should pay for her lifestyle decisions. She is adamantly pro choice and doesnt like that issue in the republican party but doesnt see abortion being an anti woman issue and certainly not the issue we should be basing our vote on in this election. So sorry if your point of view doesnt match with all strong independent women who are a little less controlled by "maggots" than you think.

      You said:

All your progressive policies sound so great in writing and in text books but how do they play out in the real world? How are things for the poor, minority and middle class under Obama's economic policies? How has it worked out in California, Illinois and NY where Obama's economic policies have been in place for years?

They've worked really well thank you. These three states are livable (clearly being among the most populous states in the country), and don't leave their citizens out on the street. They vote True Blue, and are by far net contributors to the Federal Government in taxes. We each pay more than we get back. In fact the three states you mentioned have ponied up about $2T over the last 20 years. 9 out of the top giver states are blue, by the way, so your team's pointing to government leeching really needs to just turn around and point back at yourself.

Actually, those Democrats you speak of are the perfect representation of the Democratic platform... that is: STAY OUT OF OUR BEDROOMS.

You see, I don't care what any of them do. If Clinton wants to get a hummer from an intern, I DON'T CARE. It is his personal life, and I have no business telling him what to do... just like he has no business tell me what to do.

As long as they do not pass a policy telling me what to do in my own bedroom, I don't care what they do in their bedrooms.

THAT is the difference. Republicans, like YOU, constantly force policies that affect our personal lives. And THAT is what we have a problem with.

We do not want your Republican, BIG GOVERNMENT policies in our personal lives.

Obviously you lack the intelligence to understand this, so let me make it real easy for you:

Treating women bad in your personal life = I don't give a flying f***.

Pushing policies that restrict the rights of my wife = I have a big problem with that.

        JohnB...

Nice attempt at spinning in interest payments as part of the debate on obamas contributions to the size of the national debt. If that was truly the point you wish to make then why not take into account that the FED interest rates have been at historic lows since the recession as well as from the 90's going forward?

Or how about comparing our debt over the years as a % of GDP. Now that could be very scary to visualize over obamas first term, especially in light of the FEDS near zero interest rates.

Then there is the question of why obama didn't do anything to start bring the debt under control. At least we all knew that the republican congress didn't want to raise taxes, but just what did obama and company bring to the table in offerring specific cuts to government programs? We all know that the FY2011 budget cuts were oriented towards cutting future spending and not current spending.

I found it interesting that obama's v1.0 FY 2012 budget touted $1.1 trillion in dificit cuts over 10 years (25% by raising taxes, 75% in government spending cuts) yet obama and company couldn't see clear to agreeing to any spending cuts that the right offerred. Wasn't what the republicans wanted was only $61 billion in spending cuts vs obamas $82 billion in spending cuts?

I even recall you giving links to the 1986 tax reform act that the democrats had promised to make spending cuts wrt the 1986 across the board cuts to ensure that the 1986 tax reform act would indeed be revenue neutral. You even took pleasure in pointing out that the democrats never did deliver on spending cuts. Now you want to blame the right for interest payments that the left didn't adjust for. My, My, My!!

        -----------------------------

Backhouse and other "return to the past" thinking liberal/progressives...

Guarenteed medicare benifits? LMAO. Didn't you read government reports that within 12 years medicare wouldn't neet their obligations. Or read the SS trustee report that on or around 2033 SS could only pay out roghly 77% of the defined benifits for those drawing SS. So backhouse, what discretionary programs do we cut back on to maintain these so called guarenteed medicare and SS bennies? Pell grants? PP? VA bennies? Military R&D? Natural disaster relief?

So backhouse what government discretionary spend programs do you want to eliminate to "guarentee" medicare as we know it today and will those program cuts even be able to sustain medicare outlays.

This petty crap by the democrats is so bogus and women are falling for it! The government has its nose in everyone's business and should stick to their own business! Maybe if they did, we wouldn't be in such a mess!

"Only in the GOP's America would this girl be $250,000 in debt and in danger of losing her medical treatment"

and then at the end of the article

"Isom's mystery condition has left her and her family deep in debt as state-issued insurance does not cover her treatment at the specialist unit in Baltimore and only covers five of the 17 medications she is prescribed. She owes about $250,000 in outstanding medical bills, and she fears that she may not be able to continue her treatment.

We're not all SHEEPLE.. You said GOP'S AMERICA is why she is in debt.. Obama is the President, that is a DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT'S America that is responsible, and what's worse is she is on STATE-ISSUED insurance.. a.k.a. OBAMACARE, genius.. So, how exactly is the GOP responsible for her crappy Obama insurance??

At least we all knew that the republican congress didn't want to raise taxes, but just what did obama and company bring to the table in offerring specific cuts to government programs?

You seem to have forgotten that Obama offered $10 in cuts for every $1 in revenue gained.

This must be part of your selective memory, where your overwhelming hatred for Obama causes you to "forgot" what actually happened, in favor of a misrepresentation that supports your mindset.

We adults call something like this "compromise"... I know, that is a bad word to you. But when faced with the choice between voting for a party that is willing to compromise, and one that refuses all compromise... how do you think a reasonable person will vote?

OhBoy the topless bikini chart!! The really important question should be...

With employment growth not keeping up with our population growth since job gains first turned positive in 2009.

Persistant unemployment at over 8% with hundreds of thousands no longer looking for work more than 3 years after obama offerred his program of "hope and change" and changing it to blaming someone else.

A GDP annualized growth rate of less tha 2% under his leadership.

You are going to sit there and say that America is economically better off just because jobs are added every month in the private sector?

And that will not change, regardless of who is in office.

You see, technology is replacing jobs. All the jobs at music stores, replaced by iTunes. Video stores replaced with online streaming. Bookstores replaced with Amazon and eReaders. Travel agents replaced with online booking. Grocery store clerks replaced with self service machines. Newspapers replaced with online news.

The fact is, across the board, technology is making it easier to do jobs with less people. As technology improves, less people are required to complete a job. At the same time, population increases, widening the gap between available jobs and those that want to work.

Tax rates will not change that, regulations will not change that... in fact, nothing short of population control will change that. Technology will always improve and replace humans on the job. That is reality.

Emphasis added. Do you realise just how biased this sounds? Seems to me you're more concerned about spinning the myth about President Obama's education than wanting equal information on both candidates in order to compare their abilities and history. President Obama has released several years of tax history. Let Mr. Romney do the same, and also let Mr. Romney officially release his transcripts, then we can talk about President Obama's education.

Dave, it isnt biased at all. Its called I really dont care and I hate these diversions. Did you know that Bush's SAT score was higher than Gore's? Who cares and it didnt change the fact that Bush was one of the worst presidents of all time. Do I care about Obama's birth certificate? Do I care (although I do find it interesting that Obama wants so desperately to keep it private) how and what his academic achievements were? NO because I already have a 4 historical record of his achievements as President. Do I care what Romney made or paid in lawful taxes beyond what he is required to release? NO because it has no bearing on his ability to lead and implement better economic policies than Obama. Clinton was one of the great presidents and look at his moral failures and his horrendous behavior towards woman in which he had a power leverage and control over. Clinton presided over one of the most criminally indicted cabinets of modern times but you know what it had no impact on his ability to lead and be a great president. I dont for a second believe that any of you Obama campaign team members especially Jen Psaki (Fiesty) really have any real interest in Romney's tax returns except to try and use them for embellishment, lies and half truths to divert attention from Obama's record. You guys truly dont have the best interest of the country in your request.

The choice in 2012 comes down to this:

Who lied us into a useless, senseless war and cratered our economy?

Who wants to attack Iran and throw away the beginnings of an economic recovery on out-of-control military spending?

Who wants to continue the failed 'trickle-down' tax breaks for the mega-rich, and at the same time make middle class workers pay higher taxes to cover the tax revenue shortfall?

Who wants to do away with the 'entitlement' programs we workers have already paid for?

Face it, Republicans: you got us into a huge economic mess. You haven't done diddly to help us get out of it. You're brainwashed if you imagine even for an instant that your party would have completely turned around the economy by now.

We could never have climbed out of the hole your failed leadership landed us in overnight. You had your chance to try things your way, and your way failed. IT FAILED UTTERLY!

Let Obama try it his way. Give him a chance, and quit with the lies and obstructionism. We are all in this boat together...we will sink like a stone together if you continue to torpedo everything constructive our president tries to do.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

We each pay more than we get back. In fact the three states you mentioned have ponied up about $2T over the last 20 years. 9 out of the top giver states are blue, by the way, so your team's pointing to government leeching really needs to just turn around and point back at yourself.

You are out of touch with Calif. They are so far in debt from payouts to illegal immigrant aid and medical bills and govt payouts like pensions and insurance premium assistance, there is no way you can pay in more than comes out of the coffers.

Kirk, you assume I'm one of the "Obama campaign team members." I just believe it fair to apply the same standard to both. Demanding President Obama release transcripts, while not making the same demands of Mr. Romney, and defending Mr. Romney's reluctance to release tax records seems an open display of bias. By the way, did you know that Bush and Gore did not relase their own records? They were leaked, probably in violation of federal law.

Going back to your earlier post, you did make one correct statement. I'm probably not going to vote for Mr. Romney anyway. But I doubt you will vote for President Obama even if his transcripts are released and he earned straight A's. I suspect most conservatives would either claim he was given the grades, or that somehow the record had been altered.

I am a little left of center, and I believe President Obama has done a resonable job with what he had to work with, but I would have liked a palatable alternative. I don't feel that Republicans have nominated a candidate acceptable to voters more toward the center, on either side. I still wish Republicans would have nomiated Jon Huntsman.

You should really look up the facts before you make blatant statements. Multiple reports show that Calif pays MORE to the federal government than they take in.

Personally I think EVERY STATE should only be allowed to take what they pay. That would help balance out Calif and other blue states, while making red states suffer.

Look it up. 9 out of the top 10 states that pay MORE than they take are blue states.

Kaybee--no defense of Bush as he was a horrible president but the Iraq war didnt crater the economy it was the housing bubble in which policies adopted and pushed by both parties and previous presidents put us in the bubble. The GOP and democrats alike can be blamed for the economic mess. Iran and the middle east are not the sole province of one party. Obama will have to face the same tough issues with Iran and my guess is that both parties will make the same decisions so this is not a reason to vote for either candidate. Whether the rich pay a fair share or should pay more, what is true is that they currently pay virtually all the current federal income tax. What is also true is that the Internal Revenue Code needs to be revised eliminating all of the loopholes and inequities for all taxpayers. What is also true that anyone working regardless of how much they make shouldnt have to pay more than 40% of their income to the federal government which is what Obama already has it at with Obamacare. What is likely is that everyone working above the poverty level may need to pay more or at least eliminate the social engineering inequities. Whether they pay more has nothing to do with trickle down as targeted tax cuts meant to incent investment under both Reagan and Clinton worked and revenue increased. What Obama has done doesnt and hasnt worked. There is no expectation that it will. Stop the crap about the GOP doing away with Social Security and Medicare as all they want to do is fix it. You already will receive far more than what you put in and if you wanted it to be locked away for you so bad, you should have been for private accounts. In addition, you do realize that one major cause of income inequality in this country is social security and medicare because our seniors control over 80% of the wealth in this country so all we are doing is taking money from the working young poor and middle class and giving it to our wealthy seniors (in the aggregate). Obama has had 4 years, he has only proven that he is not worthy of 4 more years of economic chaos.

Dave, I apologize if I lumped you in as I get personally attacked constantly for just wanting to discuss issues rather than campaign. I agree with your comments and disagree slightly because I think both parties are unfortunately dominated by extremes (they both just dont recognize themselves). The GOP is dominated by religious and social issue partisans who also are generally fiscally conservative. To rally and get their vote, any GOP candidate regardless of their personal views panders to this group in the primary. The democrats are exactly the same, dominated by the far left wing nuts many of them on this blog they just cant see themselves who Obama has had to pander to in order to get their votes. It just appears differently when you care for one candidate over the other. Neither candidate appears to represent the middle or the socially liberal fiscal conservative voter. The only difference I see in this race is that Romney historically has been a socially liberal for the GOP and is a fiscal conservative so he represents me more than Obama as I dont truly believe he is a fiscal conservative. Do I think he is a left wing nut? No and I think he has done some good things. I just think he has pandered to his far wing crowd and let them hurt private enterprise with policies that they never understand the unintended consequences of. Clinton was a far more effective democratic leader.

Democratic National Convention, Day One. While my efforts at OFA prevented my viewing the early evening's speeches and videos live, the tape will let me see what I missed. But what I saw was that each speaker set the stage for the next; no speaker stepped all over the previous or the next, no speaker stepped on the DNC Party's message unlike the GOP which stepped all over itself and its message. For example: Ann Romney did a fine job, gave a lovely speech about her husband, the family, love; then Chris Christie stomped all over it with his look at me for 2016 speech. Clint Eastwood stepped all over both Rubio and Romney. Anyone remember what Rubio or Romney said? Not really, but they remember the empty chair and the invisible man.

The GOP Convention appeared disjointed, as if they drew the order of speakers from a hat. The Democratic Convention's first night was well orchestrated like a symphony building with each successive speaker to the finale', Michelle Obama, who was superb, who--just as she did in 2008--moved many in the audience to tears. While Ann Romney gave a fine speech, Michelle Obama's had heart-felt passion because she has lived the struggles, understands the struggles.

This morning I notice FR's article that democrats "assailed" Mitt Romney. Yes, some did but they didn't "assail" the man, they "assailed" his, Ryan's and the GOP's policies. Therein lies the difference between the GOP Convention last week and the Democratic Convention this week. Last week was a lie-filled, anti-Obama hate fest--a spectical of disrespect. It was far less about the virtues of Mitt Romney than it was about how many dog whistles they could blow and lies they could tell. Certainly democrats threw some punches at Mitt Romney but they did it with humor and not animosity; they poked fun, not anger.

Another huge difference between the two conventions is that the GOP delegates weren't cheering Mitt Romney as much as they were cheering against President Obama. The Democratic delegates were cheering for President Obama and for his accomplishments and for the Democratic vision to move FORWARD, not back.

Is that all you got, Xabre? Was I right or wrong? Has the FEATURED SPEAKER at the Dem convention accused of multiple sexual assaults or not? Isn't this strange to have such a person speaking there when the theme of the Dems lately has been to claim that there is a Republican "War On Women"?

So, Damage, and rukidding, what about David Vitter, Jon Ensignsman, Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, the pervert from Florida, Justice Clarence Thomas--all republicans--one could claim they were guilty of assault as well, eh?

News98, you just summed up the GOP Convention nicely as well as shining a light on their policies which are all about women's vaginas which are none of their darn business, least of all do those men have a right to legislate!

BTW, I used to be a republican until I realized that Ronald Reagan's policies would take us where we landed in 2008.

Wonderful to see all these enthusiastic Democrats. Democrat is spelled - H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y.

Great to see you all supporting the convention of the party that is satisfied to do nothing.

                                  Wonderful.

The USA needs a budget? Democrats do nothing and blame the GOP.

Not sure why it is looked at as productive to blame someone for something that is missing.

I guess if a child goes missing at the DNC, no one will look for that child but EVERYONE will blame someone. Nice Democrats.

Lets go "starsailing", "feisty redherd" and all the rest of you liberal sheep. Start collapsing the comments here that you do not like. Nice censorship you Democrats - the party of CENSORS.

Lets go - start asking for all the proof so you can ignore what is offered. That is especially productive.

When someone brings up a point, ignore it, make fun of it or blame GWB. Wonderful ways the Democrats deal with challenges.

And what of the Democrat convention???

What is the point? It appears this convention was held just to:

                                  - have Michelle lie thru her teeth about Obama. We have lived thru his joke of a Presidency. Please dont talk down to us as if we werent here.

                                  - say the words "uterus" and "vagina" as often as possible. Really? With 25 million people out of work - Obama can only think about women's body parts? That is his second term??

                                  - have all the Democrats who arent paying taxes (Romney has paid his taxes, I know you Democrats CAN NOT STAND anyone who pays their taxes) get up and speak. Rangel? Hasnt paid in 7 years. He is allowed to speak???

                                  - listen to Democrats say they are "christian", "pray" to a god, and then understand that the DNC has TAKEN GOD OUT OF THEIR PLATFORM. GOD WAS NOT ALLOWED IN THEIR PLATFORM. Pleeeeez Democrats, explain that hypocrisy. No God in the platform, but countless references to a "god" in speeches. TYPICAL DAILY DEMOCRAT HYPOCRISY

I can not wait to hear the Dictator explain why he needs another 4 years. For what? To give Michelle more fodder for some retirement home speech about how "great" her husband (is he? they have no marriage license)

Lets go democrats - let's protect womens health as we allow them to kill their babies, lets scream about Romneys taxes while we allow our members to ignore tax law, lets ignore God, but talk about a "god" in all our speeches.

Democrats - we have had enough of your hypocrisy.

ROMNEY and RYAN - the American team we need to get America back on track. The current Communist dictator hasnt done jack. Fire Obama and hire Mitt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                  - talks endlessly about women's body parts - wow - who would think the 2nd term of Obama can be summed up with the word "vagina".

...in contrast to the Republicans, who can be summed up with the word "dicks"?

Do you people plan to confront this hilarious hypocrisy or to you plan to ignore it?

I think that Republicans should confront the blatant hypocrisy of a presidential candidate who campaigns against government entitlements, but made his fortune through loopholes in the federal tax code.

The hypocrisy of a presidential candidate who says his business experience can help us pay down our national debt - when his business model was built on borrowing huge sums of money that other people ended up paying back.

The hypocrisy of a vice presidential candidate who complains about the defict and debt - after voting for all the major legislation that caused it.

The hypocrisy of a vice presidential candidate who villified President Obama for not accepting the Simpson-Boles recommendations - when he was the deciding vote against it.

The hypocrisy of Ann Romney who talks about her and Mitt's struggles as a young couple - but fails to mention they NEVER faced true financial uncertainty, or that they sold stock given to them by Mitt's dad to "get by".

Unfortunately I am certain that Republicans will continue to ignore the hypocrisies, outright lies, and self-serving reversals of positions by their candidates.

In all the speeches and all the videos I learned one thing last night: We need to support the 1%. Not the Republican 1% that steal from the middle class and want to let the poor DIE. I'm talking about the 1% that put their lives on the line to preserve our Democracy.

During WWII, about 10% to 12% of the nation was in uniform, serving in the military. Probably 50% of the civilian population was directly involved in the production of munitions, equipment, supplies and material for the war. It truly was a national effort, an "ALL OUT" war.

During the Vietnam war, approximately 4.5% of the population, some 9 million people, served in the military during the nine years of the Vietnam war (1964 to 1975.) While not the all encompassing extent as WWII, much of the nation was still involved in the war.

While the Republicans sent our troops to Afghanistan, under equipped, and then forgot about them, and don't even mention them in their political speeches anymore, let us not forget the real 1% that matters.

Who cares about where Israel's capital is! We are not all Jewish and have ties to Israel. If i were a republican operative I would not critizise platforms at this point when theirs has no exception of an abortion or rape and incest. That $hit is like making the victim pay for the crime. Essentially, govt mandated procreation.

The best parts of the night last night was that fox news went out of their way to show an interview with an actor that was in a fake political show that no once cares about instead of showing the remarks by Deval Patrick who is Romney's successor in MA and would have beet him down handily in a head to head match up had Romney decided to run for a 2nd term. But Romney knew that and that is why he didnt run for re-election. He told it like it was from prospective of being there to clean up Romney's mess and it was a great speech filled with what that mess was really like.

We also saw Ted Kennedy put the smack down on Romney from beyond the grave. This was the highlight of the night for me. Kennedy called Romney such a flip-flopper that "in a few weeks he will be voting for me" ...lol that was classic. And what is worst is that this guy has not changed. He lies, hides his past and changes his stance on things according to what his base wants to hear. In one word... Classic!!

the only president to ever be accused of MULTIPLE SEXUAL ASSAULTS, will be speaking. LOL!!!

Accusations of sexual misconduct, including assault, have been directed at presidents all the way back to Thomas Jefferson. But any idiot can make such an accusation. If every father going through a divorce was jailed because of such an accusation, we wouldn't have the room to house them all.

Your point is not only untrue, it's irrelevant, assuming you still believe in the Constitutional right of innocence until proven guilty.

So, which is it? An unfounded fabrication, or a denial of the rights as defined in the Constitution?

Jody - I almost always agree with you, but that statement couldn't be further from the truth. Her speech was filled with venom that matches the viper she is. Her statement about her 'real marriage' was divisive and mean spirited, meant to demean anyone that doesn't agree with her views. We will never know if her 'real marriage' comment was a statement about her religious belief that her Mormon Temple Marriage carries more weight than any other non-Mormon marriage, or if she was demeaning any marriage between same-sex couples. What we can be sure of is that she believes she is a cut-above everyone else. Elitist, exclusive is what that horrible wretched woman is, down to every plastic bone in her Barbie doll body. Thank God she found her match in crotchless Mitzy-Ken.

It is true that Obama and the Democrats claim to feel for American people, every time an election rolls around. The Democratic Party of blame, excuses, and no responsibility. You have to love the fact that all the liberal bloggers on this site are swooning over the convention, even as the polls have Obama tanking in almost every category. No one is watching this political theater, and no one cares about either convention. No matter how many ways liberals spin this election, it will be nothing but a referendum on the job Obama has done, or the job he has failed to do. A catchy campaign slogan and the ability to read a speech will not be enough to carry Obama this time around. Obama has failed to lead, and that means it is time for him to leave.

Damage, if you are going to make accusations about Bill Clinton, at least make an effort to be factual. Clinton was not guilty of sexual assault; his impeachment was for not telling the truth about his affair with Lewinsky. Last I checked, it isn't sexual assault if both are consenting. As for the other claims made by several women, some were claims of sexual harrassment--you know, favors for favors and guess what, they wanted those favors or else they would and could have walked away in the first place. I don't recall the Arkansas ladies name, the one who settled but why do you she agreed to go to Bill Clinton's hotel room, not once but several times? Even as a young teenager, I would have known the intent of the invitation--it wasn't for good conversation. Jennifer Flowers, it was an affair. So while Clinton was guilty of womanizing, that's Hillary's problem. Don't get me wrong, I do not defend Bill Clinton's behavior but I have seen the same behavior on the part of republicans and somehow the Damages always ignore those dalliances whether it is David Vitter, Herman Cain, Mark Sanford, Jon Ensign, Larry Craig or ???. It's a two-way street so those who choose to drive on it had better be prepared for the vehicles coming the other way.

                                  Backhouse, thanks.

New98, why should I take Iowa from my name? Guess what, there's a lot of Iowans who think as I do just as there are Steve King Iowans as well; I don't tell the extremist right-wingers to move elsewhere so why should I move. I've got a republican neighbor and a democrat neighbor and we get along just fine. It's a free country last time I checked and as such I HAVE A RIGHT to live here the same as Steve King, in all his glorious bigotry does.

The GOP reminds me of Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) in Key Largo:

                                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWa6vsXOKAU

Frank McCloud: He knows what he wants. Don't you, Rocco?
                                  Johnny Rocco: Sure.
                                  (James Temple: What's that?)
                                  FM: Tell him, Rocco.
                                  JR: Well, I want uh...
FM: He wants more, don't you, Rocco?
JR: Yeah. That's it. More. That's right! I want more!
(James Temple: Will you ever get enough?)
                                  FM: Will you, Rocco?
JR: Well, I never have. No, I guess I won't. You, do you know what you want?
FM: Yes, I had hopes once, but I gave them up.
                                  JR: Hopes for what?
FM: A world in which there's no place for Johnny Rocco.

The Democrats have not given up hope! No more "more", GOP!

The economy doesn't have room for the Johnny Roccos.

Kirk - do you have any evidence that Obama is giving millions of dollars to Rev. Wright's church?

                                  Thought not.

The Mormon Church is fair game as long as Romney is making the rest of us American taxpayers fund his contributions to them.

"Nobody really cares about Romney's taxes"? I care, as do millions of other Americans. Why should he not have to show where his money comes from and who he's beholden to? Every other President did.

And if they GOP weren't just a bunch of hypocrites, they'd care, too.

For all you know, he may be getting his income from the Muslim Brotherhood, right?

RedDev, just trying to be generous; they call it Iowa Nice. I probably could have been clearer but didn't take the time this morning; "fine" was the best I could manage. I disagreed with Ann Romney and found most of her speech devoid of passion, disingenuous and divisive; however, considering she is a republican and a Morman woman who considers herself of less worth than her husband, it was a "fine" (meaning okay, fine, not grand, not excellent, not great) speech as far as the intent of it which was to humanize them both, make them seem just like everyone else. Do I think she succeeded in her efforts? No.

As a political science junkie, I watched most of the RNC, and most of last night. I really enjoyed Julian castro's speech; that man can speak to a crowd! His message was awesome- completely eviscerating the Romney/Ryan ideology while spotlighting President Obama's message. In contrast, I thought Chirtie's speech was selfish and mainly about him and his story, very little about why we should vote for Mitt Romney.

I don't thik it is fair to overly criticise the spouse speeches. They were each doing their job and telling us why they love and stand behind their husbands. I thought Ann Romney's speech was very well given. I think the same about Michelle Obama's speech. The main contrast for me was the way in which they testified to the public works of their husbands. Mrs. Romney didn't spend much time at all on that, however, Mrs. Obama spent almost half her speech mentioning various outcomes (ACA) and issues (Women's health care rights, education) which emphasized the Democrats inclusiveness toward women and others. Mrs. Romney did not accomplish that, in my opinion, however, Mr. Romney made it clear that there is very little room for women's rights in their platform.

Well, I certainly enjoyed the show myself. They should have been doing these talking points long ago.

Opinions aside, we'll see the polls regarding each convention that will show whose was more effective.

What I do see in this blog is a boat load of republicans with nothing but hate. Expecting to throw their opinions out there and everyone believing they actually sat through and watch it.

You know they didn't take the time to watch any of it. Just passing through and spew hate.

NBC Headline: Dems show how to put on a convention.

Wait. What? I thought that NBCNews was (trying) to be an unbiased news outlet. That idea was pretty much thrown out the window with that headline. How can (an unbiased news outlet) say that after one day of a convention where the top row of seats was half empty?

Also in regards to Michelle's speech, what a load of crap! She told stories of how Barack and her went through such hard times. Well Ms. Obama you went to Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s upper class, while Barack attended Punahou, the private prep school for the top stratum of Hawaiian society. Also you both went to Ivy-League schools. Then you bought a $277,500 two-bedroom condo in 1993--a high price even by today’s standards. Several years later, they moved into their $1.65 million mansion in Hyde Park--with the help of fraudster Tony Rezko. That's strange, you try to tell people you're connected to the middle class, when almost your whole life you've been upper class.

You do realize these are SPEECHES their giving, right?? They don't even write their own half the time, people usually write them for the candidates and their guests.. Their campaign managers and writers do alot of the public image setting for them.. Both candidates could be absolute shytbags and none of us would really know.. It's not like you or I are meeting them for lunch.. You can't trust everything you read and see on TV.. The news, you can't trust that either, it's the editors opinion that gets published.. Depending on what that individual writers bias is, is the opinion you'll get.. FACT is what you should base your vote on.. They are both going to tell their target audiences EXACTLY what they want to hear to get their votes.. How many presidential speeches have you heard? How many of the candidates produced ALL of the "fruit" they promised?? Listen, most candidates have a platform that they aspire to concentrate on and some actually make progress towards their goals.. I've been reading a lot of the comments here, and most are like puppets phrasing what is said by each nominee.. That doesn't make it true, it makes it a speech..

A first thought from the first night -

"Enthusiasm gap"??? Oh, that is just soooo "last week". Except that as I pointed out yesterday, that one was more like an "enthusiasm chasm".

                                    A few more thoughts:

We Democrats are not without our flaws. Like last week's show, I was watching on PBS, so I may not have seen the same interviews and speeches everyone else did. I liked the filmed one from Jimmy Carter, even though I never voted for him. It was a reminder of a time when there was more to politics than the "quick bites and snappy rhetoric of a tv commercial". The film on Teddy Kennedy reminded me of a time when I still had ideals and still believed that just having them was enough. And watching an interview with Nancy Pelosi, I decided it was finally time to come clean and admit that I've never been much of a fan, and while I respect her past accomplishments, that's where they now belong - in the past. We'd do well to at least consider a new house leader.

Because we really are the party of the future, not the past. The party going forward, not back. Every time the cameras panned the audience, you could see the changing future of America's demographics, while on the stage there was a constant parade of names and faces that we may not have heard of even four years ago but who are on the verge of becoming household names. Corey Booker. Tammy Duckworth. Julian Castro. This is 2012, not 1952 or 1972 or even 2002 - and they "get it". The torch has once again been passed to a new generation, and they're more than ready to take it and run with it.

And what more can anyone say about Michelle Obama? She's smart. She's passionate. She relates to people. She's gorgeous. She doesn't just have a typical First Lady "cause" to support as if she's some Miss America candidate trying to be taken seriously, she's actively involved in the two she believes in and seems to have boundless energy and devotes serious amounts of time to them - not just because it looks good on her resume, but because she really cares. Best. First. Lady. Ever.

I seriously LOVE being a Democrat!

.Disappointment, the new meme from Republicans is their latest attempt to try to undermine voter confidence in the President and the Democrats.

They’ve tried: he’s a nice guy, but he failed, Republicans and their supporters have followed threads of birther nonsense, or accusing the President of being anything from a Marxist to a Fascist, a socialist to a colonist Muslim infiltrator, and some time all of them in one breath. Romney’s campaign and their supporters are quite content to let the lies seep into our everyday world in the hopes there will be some who’ll believe them and help build their narrative. They must be disappointed in their investment of lies, so they now want to try a softer approach of course still using lies.

I have not been disappointed in the President for many reasons, some are:

                                    • I am not disappointed in the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Bill, for equal pay for women working the same job as a man.
                                    • I am not disappointed in the Affordable Care Act and as a Medicare recipient I appreciate the preventative care I receive free and the reduction in the price I pay for prescription drugs.
                                    • I am not disappointed in President Obama’s decisions on, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act
                                    • I am not disappointed in his efforts to reform Education and to help students pay for higher education through funding for reasonable student loans
                                    • I am not disappointed in his great efforts supporting and fighting for women’s rights

But I am disappointed, very disappointed in some of my fellow Americans who are so willing to accept as gospel the lies told to them. Lies that are woven into every republican campaign whether it be Presidential, Congressional, State or Local campaigns. Lies about Women and our rights, lies about Healthcare, Medicare and Social Security. Lies that try to divide and separate those who are poor, the children, the working poor, who through no fault of their own, are threatened by the Ryan Budget with severe cuts to so many programs including Food Stamps. Lies told in ads and speeches about Welfare Job requirements, lies that play and feed into the deep insecurities of blue collar workers and to the prejudices of the darker side of human nature. These are some of the disappointments, the lack of appreciation for fundamental values, a lack of respect, a disregard for the truth and the most egregious, voter suppression, to stop people from exercising their franchise. How can fellow citizens support these maneuvers? How can some of our fellow citizens be accepting of a man, as their nominee for Vice President, a man who plotted along with others in his party, to undermine a duly elected President working to help the country and so many of its citizens.

Can anyone on the right square any of this for me?

Me too, GBM! The total disconnect from the Republicans on the disaster THEY caused and continue to cause and the facts about the good that President Obama has done for this nation is astounding. The Republicans don't want to know the truth, because they will have to admit that the good of the country falls far below their own love of power, and their resentment at losing the White House.

The energy of the convention last night stands in stark contrast to the Republican convention. The love of country was evident.

Mrs. Obama showed her connection to Americans and the American Experience in her presentation last night that was missing in Ann Romney's presentation. Ann cannot connect, because she does not know how real people live, the struggle that some Americans have, but Ann would not care about that anyway. Like the rest of her party, her belief is that only the undeserving are poor. They did something to earn that status, and they don't deserve better. Only her class deserves the benefits of citizenship in this country.

It is a stark contrast, and REAL Americans know what they must do. Return President Obama to the White House and defeat the "teabagger" House.

Vote a straight Democratic ticket. Your very lives depend on it.

This is the way to run a convention, lively, fun and informative. Who knew Deval Patrick was such a firecracker? and a good possibility for 2016.

OK, I'll be shallow - what a beautiful dress the First Lady wore! Very feminine. Not loud. Her dress was delicate, nuanced, complex, fluid. Lovely.

And why is that important? Because her beautiful dress symbolizes the fact Michelle Obama has pride in herself. She is comfortable in her own skin. She's not afraid to be feminine. She connects with people, but she's not co-dependent. She loves her children, but she doesn't expect them to define her, she supports them. I've always know Barack was gifted, but now I see she's his equal in her extraordinary talents - talk about "the Great Communicator!" What a remarkable woman.

Mrs. Obama was absolutely stunning both in words and appearance. The WH released a great picture of President Obama arms around the first daughters, watching Mom!

                                    Joanne,

Perceptive comments. Particularly the one about Nancy Pelosi and the need for new leadership--your comment about the panning of faces in the crowd that show changing demographics--the party of the future, not the party of the past. Let the Republicans continue their march reward into the distant past as new faces among the Democrats take our party forward.

The film on Ted Kennedy reminded ME that he waged a life-long "War On Women" including the REPEATED humiliation of his wife, the constant using of women as nothing more than sex objects and the horrifying abandonment of a 28 year-old WOMAN to drown in an upside-down car while he ran off to lie and cover up.

Does the "War On Women" bullcrap you people have been spewing for the last 6 months only count during an election year...against Repubs only? Apparently so. Otherwise, you people are hypocrites whose opinions mean nothing. It's already bad enough you kicked and screamed that anyone who was against gay marriage was a "bigot", then you have your convention in a state that voted down gay marriage. Again, can't make this stuff up! LOL

Would you care to talk about the actual issues, or are you just going to continue to post whatever dirt you can dig up or make up?

Politicians are human and frequently screw up - on both sides. That does not define policy - well, not for the Democrats anyway.

Herein lies one of the great differences between the parties - Republicans talk about how the country looks, and at a very superficial level, while Democrats talk about policies that actually make the country better.

Scary thought - that President Obama has "lived the American Dream".

Scary to those of us who own businesses, work all hours, and just get by. Our American Dream does not include having someone else provide for our well being for most of our lives - as our president has.

The contrast between your post and the other posts on this thread is similar to the differences between the Republican convention and the Democratic convention.

You are certainly entiteld to your opinion, but like most Republicans you can't seem to express any other emotions but hate and anger. Nothing positive about your party or candidates, just negatvie distortions about the other side.

If you truly believe that Democrats are hypocrites and Republicans have better ideas, then why not post a stirring account of Romney's policies and proposals and why they are right for America's future?

It seems like lies, distortions, and personal attacks are all the Republican party has left. They sound like a bunch of grumpy old men telling the kids to stay off their lawns.

Michelle Obama - as great a liar as her husband (even tho they have yet to produce a marriage cert.)

I love the Dem convention because it:

                                    - talks endlessly about women's body parts - wow - who would think the 2nd term of Obama can be summed up with the word "vagina". How about that feisty redherd - there is some proof of your glorious angel Obama.

                                    - shows the democrat anger and hatred - this is a convention about obama??????? No, it is a vendetta against anything sane - these feminazis SHRIEK their hatred and are followed by their wimpy "men" right down the toilet.

                                    - Romneys taxes?? Anyone ask Rangel when he will pay his taxes?? Romney PAID his taxes. Not enough if you are a liberal - too bad - if you were to work - you could understand how to pay taxes, too.

                                    - where is Hillary? yes, I wouldnt get close to this infection of a president either. Obama is like a huge zit - ready to burst at anyone who asks him a question. Read the NY Times story about how Obama thinks he is smarter than -- ANYONE. Wow, how humble.

Lets go starsailing and feisty and all the rest of the sheep - I cant wait to hear how this convention shows the "world" what a great leader obama the dictator is.

Great? Check your dictionary, obamas picture is found next to the toilet. He claims he built it, used it and smells like it.

Marriage certificate? Feminazis? Zits and toilets? And you actually expect anyone to take your post seriously?

FYI - Secretary Clinton was not there because she is Secretary of State. They never attend political conventions.

And the rest of the world didn't need this convention to recognize what a great leader President Obama is - they were way ahead of us on that one.

And finally, you might want to consider working on your own anger and hatred before you worry about anyone else's. Life is really a lot better without all that negativity weighing you down.

We are now in the midst of the longest high unemployment since the Great Depression. I'm glad you're enthused about that, but I'm not. FDR expanded the government and the debt and federal power during that time. That's why it lasted as long as it did. Obama is pursuing the same course. What gives you confidence that this time things will turn out differently? What has Obama done to spur the economy? Sure, he got his stimulus. Did that accomplish what he said it would? You'd think that spending as much as the Defense budget would result in a ton of new hiring. But, it was all wasted on his supporters with no real jobs, just more debt for us to have to dig out of. Also, why do you think socialism and big government is a thing of the future? It was tried in the Soviet Union, Cuba, Venezuela, China and Europe, to mention just a few. Never has worked, never will.

The fact is the women is completely unattractive. If you want to speak the truth unlike any of the democrats I had to listen to last night, Ms. Obama is a fabulous speaker but she said nothing. Nothing new... If you give a @!$%# that Barry had holes in his car then we have way more serious problems with this country then just the economy.... They keep distracting and changing the subject. Is this what you want... To the fool above calling people the American Taliban. @!$%#s like you with the rite to vote is another problem we face.... We need someone who brings people together not someone who pushes them apart.... Obama is not the answer. I wish the guy was and sad to say he not because before anything I AM AN AMERICAN....

She is the best first lady to hit the White House since I don't know when. If you think the Republican party is capable of bringing people together, I want to know what planet you are from. When their one goal from the beginning is only to make President Obama a one term president, that is not exactly a uniting attitude. Obama has tried so hard to cross the aisle that he has risked alienating his base. Do you listen to anything but Faux News? The Republican agenda to remove him from office was in place before his inauguration. They weren't even remotely interested in what the man could do. Michelle had a good point to make when she referred to the holes in Barack's car. She wanted people to know that they had made it the hard way and could relate to their problems. Not like Mittens and Ryan, born with a silver spoon in each mouth. She hit the ball right out of the park and the GOP can't stand it!

I could not believe all the lying about the Senate Republicans "blocking" the Dream Act in the Senate. Nothing could be further from the truth !!

The facts are that a Republican treatened a filibuster. Thereafter a vote to "Cloture" was taken. "Cloture" overrides a Filibuster and to pass needs 60 votes. The Cloture vote was 55 "for" and 41 "against" and did not pass. However 4 Republicans defected from their party and voted for cloture and 5 Democrats defected from their party and voted against cloture. A Sixth Democrat was to busy going to a Christmas party to attend session and vote. If the 5 Democrats had not defected, cloture would have passed. The defecting Democrats blocked the Dream Act not the Republicans.

Had cloture been passed the Dream Act would have gotten through the Senate easily. The bipartisan defeat of cloture, however, prevented the Dream Act vote. The Republicans did not block the Dream Act a Bipartisan effort did.

What did I see last night? What was the face? I have lived in Europe and Canada, and indeed yes, I have had the privilege to reside in the US. The face of the world as I know it has changed over time; it has become one of everyone from everywhere. Our children glide through it with ease and the differences be it color, gender, religion or sexual preference are just another aspect of cool … Inclusive.

The Republican Convention was monotone, uninspiring and devoid of energy … a staid wedding of old ideas. We do not live by bread alone and what was offered up was yesterday’s stale white sliced. It will make you fat but you will die of starvation.

Last night was the real world that I am blessed to move through by the struggles and commitment of my parents. One of laughter and tears, of community and love, of family and hope, of education and respect, of struggle and change, of people growing in spirit because that spirit is … inclusive.

Obviously as a Democrat you would see it that way.. If you are for Obama you wouldn't say the Republican Convention was fabulous.. I saw both.. I thought both conventions spoke to their target audiences and did well.. As far as the comments about Lady Obama, she did well on her speech, just like everyone else.. These people aren't messiah's.. They're just people..

FR----great job with the false equivalence we've come to expect from you. The Republicans stand up last week and tell out and out lies about the President and it is politics as usual. The Democrats tell THE TRUTH about Mitt Romney and it is "hitting below the belt". Well, politics is a contact sport and the Republicans better get used to it.

I enjoyed the convention last night---for two conventions in a row I have watched the coverage with tears in my eyes and pride in my heart. And can we please stop with the enthusiasm gap---there was none in evidence at the convention and there is none here in Western Pa!

I agree - there was a major difference in tone between the two conventions, and every "attack" on Romney's policies was followed by a clear alternative course of action.

Politics IS a contact sport, but I am proud that Democrats (for the most part) passed on personal attacks and focused on sharp contrasts in policy.

news98, Mitt Romney tells lies without any emotion or conscience. this is because his religion, Mormonism is built upon lies and allows their adherents to lie about themselves AND their religion in order to fulfill some sort of "prophesy" Joseph Smith had.

                                            FROM: www.counterpunch.org/2012/08/30/an-ex-mormon-woman-looks-back-at-the-church/

What about the White Horse prophecy?

I only heard the phrase recently – it’s something Glenn Beck has talked about – but, as kids, we were told that some day a Mormon would be president and we should go to Church every week and make sure our names were on the rolls for every class we attended, because somehow this would be checked on when the Mormon became president and we would only be protected if we had been going regularly. I always thought it sounded really scary. It could be part of the MBSN – the Mormon Bull@!$%# Network – but there was a lot of that kind of thing, stories to scare us into being obedient children.

I did not watch the republican convention and I am going to give the democrats the same respect. Republicans busted the budget themselves by fighting two unpaid for wars and lowering taxes at the same time. They are in no position to lecture anyone about fiscal conservatism. Their idea is to cut the programs they hate anyway as a way to balance the budget. However, the problem is that real wages have not gone up in about 30 years which led to the credit explosion and our trust funds being in trouble. Republicans have no answer for that and democrats do not either. I thought that I did not like Obama until I got to see Ryan and Romney in action. It is one thing to be ineffective. It is quite another to be sanctimonious about it.

Hatred is bred in the GOP, not DEM. After all, which party has made it its platform to ensure a One Term President? Since GOP took House is 2010, the DEM Senate and DEM President have received NO SUPPORT or COOPERATION from the House. GOP would rather shoot themselves in the foot or lop off a GOP voter's arm if it meant that Obama wouldn't have a chance for 2012. Such a sad, sad pathetic party the GOP has become. The great GOP presidents of the past are rolling in their graves.

I harbor no hatred for the GOP. I'm just surprised the GOP don't hate themselves. A disgraceful party lacking values of camaraderie is shameful and down right sad.

DEMs have nothing but pity for the GOP.

Chuck Todd on occasion is a journalist, but mostly he goes along with the rest of MSNBC, a liberal echo chamber....

The funny thing is that Chuck Todd admitted on air that he is a Republican!

I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! Is David Gregory next?

I will freely admit my bias, but I think First Read actually went a little overboard trying to be objective.

I thought that some of the Republican speeches got more credit than they deserved (Romney's in particular) and the constant lying and bashing of President Obama without offering any alternative was downplayed.

In contrast some of the prior articles about the Democratic Convention offered a false equivalency about Democratic criticism of Romney/Ryan. Almost all of the "attacks" were policy-based and were immediately followed by a clear alternative policy.

If Romney cannot unify the Republican party and organize a convention that presents a cohesive message, how could he possibly unify an entire country and lead us anywhere.

Clean up your own backyard before you start talking about mine.

If the media did any factchecking on Obama at all, he'd be back in Chicago pandering for funds for gangbangers... his "I created more jobs that Reagan" claim for instance... there's a net LOSS of jobs under Obama.. not only is he clueless at running an economy, he's pathetic at math...

A typical Republican response, "I don't care about jobs or people, how is the stock market doing?"

A real President has to make decisions that are good for the majority of Americans, not just the wealthy investors. Employee pensions were preserved, and thousands if not milions of jobs were saved - many of them the small businesses that Republican claim to care about.

The GM bailout still has a lower cost than Romney's proposed tax breaks, and had a more favorable impact on a higher number of pepole and businesses.

Unlike a business leader, the President can't simply "downsize" citizens or "cut his losses" by declaring bankruptcy and trying again somewhere else. The President must stay committed to the country and it's people and lead them through the tough times.

Obama won't have to "DECLARE" bankruptcy ... if he is re-elected, we will see, feel and hear bankruptcy within a few years. Our country is $16 trillion in debt and operating without a federally-mandated BUDGET !

We are like a great ship without a rudder plowing "full speed ahead" with no budget, no plan and no clue as to where we are going .... all under Obama's "leadership".

Of course the people attending the conventions are going to be enthusiastic! It is the enthusiasm of the 23 million unemployed, underemployed, or who have given up on finding work that will be very significant in this election. Many of those people voted for Hope & Change in 2008, and are very disappointed in the "change" they got. Those of you living on the east and west coasts may be surprised to learn that the majority of the folks in between the coasts are ready for another change in 2012! There is going to be a sea of red on the electoral map come election night!!

                                                  Romney Ryan 2012!!

Mrs. Obama gave a very good speech last night, and no doubt her husband will give an excellent speech on Thursday night. However, President Obama gave some great speeches in 2008 too. That is what he does. He does a fantastic job of reading from a teleprompter. When it comes to actually getting things done that will get our economy moving and growing again the teleprompter doesn't help.

If you want to hear some nice speeches and have 8 - 10% unemployment and $20 trillion in debt four years from now, then President Obama is definitely your man. If you want to continue living in denial (which is not a river in Egypt) and blaming President Bush for everything, then President Obama is your man. If you want someone who will actually DO something that will get our economy growing and our deficits and debt shrinking, then Mitt Romney is your man!!

Mitt has already made it perfectly clear that he intends to return to the same policies that caused this mess in the first place. He has even hired the same advisers who worked for, "George Who?", as Republicans apparently call him now.

So the real choice is whether to go back to the economic policies of the crash of 2008, when the country was clearly, and measurably far worse off than it is now, or continue to dig out of the hole that Republican policies dug and learn from their mistakes.

That fact that we still have work to do is more a measure of the enormity of the problem than anyone's ability to solve it by now. But making the same mistakes all over again is not the solution.

If you want someone who offers no details of their past practices, present finances, or future plans then "Swiss" Mitt Romney is your man.

If you want someone who will "tax cut and spend" our way into increased deficits while destroying the safety net for our poor and elderly, then Mitt "R-Money" Romney is your man.

I will vote for the man whose policies helped keep us from a Depression, reversed the massive job losses and negative GDP, and doubled the stock market - President Obama.

I will vote for the man who is responsible for GM being alive and Osama Bin Laden being dead - President Obama

I will vote for the man who believes that women deserve the right to make their own health decisions, everyone deserves a fair chance at success, and that everyone must pay their fair share - PRESIDENT OBAMA!

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will bring honesty and integrity back to the USA. Sorry, Obama just wants this country overrun with illegal aliens to give them housing, food and medical, which takes away from our $$ and our social security for when we get older. Any chances the USA is to vote for Romney/Ryan..

The human spirit was celebrated last night at the Dem convention. Each speaker, from Tammy Duckworth , Julian Castro to Michelle Obama shared their family values that provided them with the opportunity and support to achieve their place in the adult world.

It is a univeral story of struggle, love, gratitude , and hope from the generation to generation. Here in America, it shines a light on the the division of the path ahead of us.

I am proud to be a Democrat in my political life and the belief in effective government which has been a support for my family's dreams. And I look forward to hear the next two nights that will look forward to what we can do as a people with the clear eyed focus on the task ahead for President Obama , Congress, and all folks we will elect in November.

bagdadjoe, it's that kind of attitude that will destroy this country if we let it. Cynicism, lack of hope, apathy, division...our biggest enemy isn't out there somewhere, it's right here at home. It's people who don't appreciate our country, don't value our opportunities, don't care about their neighbors.

It's people who are not willing to do the hard work needed to maintain our democratic system.

If you don't have hope, you have exactly nothing.

We are nowhere near the levels of unemployment, national debt or government control the Obama vision is capable of delivering to us. Can't wait to see his increased flexibility with the Soviets after re-election. Just gives me warm fuzzies.

I'm still waiting for MSNBC to honestly report the fact that former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland explicitly called out Romney for LYING last night at the convention. So did Obama adviser David Plouffe, who correctly pointed out that the Romney campaign is built on a "tripod of lies" (although I think the count is a lot higher than three lies at this point).

The corporate media seems to be downplaying the depths of Romney's dishonestly, and when a Democrat uses the "L" word to appropriately describe Romney, they censor it.

On the topic at hand, I thought some of the early speeches I saw last night were kind of boring (I didn't see all of them), though not offensive, like what I heard last week. The comedian guy (Harold and Kumar guy?) was very good, though and the First lady was absolutely amazing.

It was wonderful and entertaining. The Republican convention featured shrill loud women like Nikki Haley and self-serving, pompous men like Christie. The Republican convention was all about the rich and "I" everywhere. THe Democrats were exactly the opposite.

As a matter of fact Texas is NOT Bankrupt so you can remove it from that list. States are recieveing suppliments to help with the federally mandated unemployment extension which is what was agreed to when the extension was passed. Texas came close two years ago to not being able to balance the budget but Rick Perry took $7 Billion of the Stimulus he swore off and then he cut public education by $4 Billion and got the budget balanced.

                                                              From the article above:

What the Obama campaign did last night was what the Romney camp probably wishes it did its first night: put your show-stopper last in the primetime.

With two months to go, it's perfectly clear that President Obama will be Re-elected.

Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh and Fank Luntz have thrown all the typical old and tired political tactics this campaign and NOTHING has worked. That's because the MAJORITY of Americans have been hearing the same tactics for 20 years and it's as obsolete as a public pay phone.

They got NOTHING new to offer the American public but the "same old/same old" and American's have wised up. The MAJORITY of American's are SICK and TIRED of TRICKLE-DOWN Economics.

We are sick and tired of seening the Romney's of our country get richer and richer and the MAJORITY of us HARD-WORKING Americans getting STUCK WITH THE BILL.

More and more Eisenhower/Reagan Republicans are coming over to vote for President Obama everyday. More Independents are looking at Gary Johnson and other candidates.

And Democrats have NEVER been more focused and detemined to get this GREAT President a well-deserved second term, and Take Back the House of Representatives.

Please, I could not believe what I was listening to last night, however it was anything to do with the DNC and its core values are. Where was the mention of the great things that the President has done in his 4 years and all of the things he has protected us from. The endless amount of entitlements that we can get and how half of this country is now on the gov't dole.

                                                                #25.10 - Wed Sep 5, 2012 1:35 PM EDT

Does anyone smell Stinky Redhead, bJob 1, or smelly Amy from portland.. Nice to see the loser left in full swing.. Moochelle Dumboma tried to give a classy speech on how great her husband is, and how he is trying so hard, and how he turned down high wage jobs to work for the poor to give them a better shot at the American dream..BS...It is really hard for real Americans to stomach much more of Hussains BS.... He has lied for four years, and failed on many promises to the American people. He has embarrassed us in front of forien leaders, bowed to Muslim kings, and just not done much for the American people besides further thier dependance on government assistance. He thinks the Goverment owns us... Dip @!$%#... We own the government, Dumb ass!!!! His policies have fail across the board, and our jobless claims and unemployment for the past four years says it all... We elected a falure.. And we admitt it. Our bad. Come November we can take back our country from the lazy, the good for nothings, and the takers!!! Hard work is the only thing one should expext to get ahead in life, not the food stamp president wanting you to be dependant on the government, saying anything to any one group to get votes, ( amnesty, gay marrage, womens health, auto workers, unions, ect...) is discusting. I hope everyone noticed how the Dems were begging people to help with ther organization of there fractured and struggling campain. New poles out that show 53% of voting Americans think the presidents doesn't desirve another chance at the white house... We agree.. Send Ovomit and Mrs. Ovomit back to where ever they belong. Just not in the white house.
