CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For months, Michelle Obama has stood behind podiums at fundraisers and rallies, delivering many of the same lines she offered last night.
On the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., first lady Michelle Obama delivers an impassioned plea to women and disillusioned Democrats that her husband is still the same man he was four years ago. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.
Famously disciplined and often relating her stump speech nearly line-for-line several times in a day, many of the first lady's biographical stories are well-worn to those who have followed her on the road: her father's pride in paying his bills on time, her husband's frustration at the glass ceiling that loomed above his grandmother, the president's late nights agonizing over the letters from Americans in trouble.
But in front of a national audience and an adoring crowd, new imagery used by the first lady last night - and an implicit plea to voters to remain "in love" with the man they chose four years ago -- offered a personal and deeply emotive pitch that veiled some of her stories' unmistakable contrasts between her husband's personal history and that of the man who wants to replace him.

"We learned about dignity and decency - that how hard you work matters more than how much you make," she told the convention crowd, nudging against the narrative of Mitt Romney's wealth as a measure of his fitness to run the American economy. "Success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and square."
Adding to typical references like the student loans that mired the Obamas as a young couple, Mrs. Obama added that her young beau's "proudest possession was a coffee table he'd found in a dumpster," hinting perhaps at an oblique response to Ann Romney's description of the ironing board that served as a dining room table for the newly married Romneys.
"Barack knows the American Dream because he's lived it," she said, repeating an old staple of her stump speech that - if delivered with a hint of indignance - could draw a direct line to the implication that Mitt Romney has not.
But Mrs. Obama's almost prayerful tone at times eliminated the possible sting that her pitch could hold for independent voters. And previously unrecited details, like her husband's obsessive monitoring of her infant daughters' cribs, personalized a man frequently tagged as "aloof."
While much of the first lady's material was familiar, some language - particularly on the issues of abortion rights and gay marriage - was notably more direct than words she typically offers to audiences in Pueblo and Raleigh and Richmond.
VIDEO: Tuesday night's DNC speeches
For example, Mrs. Obama extolled the bravery of "proud Americans can be who they are and boldly stand at the altar with who they love." (She usually praises the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy but steers clear of words like "altar.")
And she won roars of approval in the debate hall for saying bluntly that "women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and our health care."
Like her Republican counterpart Ann Romney, Mrs. Obama uttered the word "love" often -- a total of 15 times in her remarks.
Ultimately, the challenge for the popular first lady will be to convince disenchanted voters that they would consider agreeing with one central sentence in her speech: "I didn't think it was possible" she said of her husband, "but today I love [him] even more than I did four years ago."

Michelle Obama is an outstanding First Lady and someone to be admired by all Americans.
Oh, c'mon man......just because she has a "D" after her name doesn't mean you need to suck up.
Who couldn't get past that buck-toothed broad's teeth? Imagine siiting across the table during dinner......ishta
For God's sake Ms. Obama, you're part of the 1%'ers - Google Invisilign! Atrocious
Barry Obummer 2012! ~ "I give myself an INCOMPLETE!"
Michelle, didn't need to wear a $3,000 red dress to get my attention and listen to the values I know in the middle class. she wowed us with her speech not bored us like Ann. the Romney's, Ryan's and the republican millionaires and billionaires just get get about life in the middle do they! A 40% tax break for the those earning $250,000 is all they care for. It is called "GREED" folks!
I'll give her an 'A' for delivery but a 'D' for content. Too much government for my taste.
So, Michael, do you have anything to say about her speech or do you have nothing so you're just going to make fun of her teeth?
Just a $6000 suit in Spain does it for ya?!
Really, clwyd: the cost of the dress was what you took away from that speech?
So tell me, since you are apparently a fashionista, what did Queen Ann's dress cost? Or is it your belief that she bought it off the rack at K-Mart?
Michael, so what we need is more of Ryan's lies and exaggerations already in the first few days of the conventions and then learning with all the cuts in programs he wants a 40% cut in taxes for the wealthiest? How will that cut the deficit? I guess maybe that isn't what he is interested in after all and he couldn't tell us at one of his town meeting how the tax breaks for the rich would decrease the deficit. We raked him over the coals and he couldn't explain himself. Just what we don't need a step away from the presidency should that, God forbid, happen!
I found this to be really ironic...
She probably won't feel the same way when Obama gets them evicted from the White House. As the job goes so does the lifestyle. She may change her tune when she has the first hand experience that so many Americans have suffered through at the hands of her husband.
God Bless America, we are getting brighter as the election draws near.
newday..., No the fact that they could afford it while others are wondering how they will eat if Romney and Ryan get through their "Path to Ruin." She didn'y say anything I didn't already know about Romney. Beign a former Mormon I also know it is a cult not a religion, but she wouldn't say that. My college thesis paper was about the Strange Movement in the Mormon Church. Real nut cases.
You mean the fact that she isn't "proud" of America? Actually, her & her husband digust me with their distain for America.
America is a place that a true American would be proud of ~ NOT apologize for!
The Obummers ~ An American Embarrassment!
Michael1969: What a horrid little person you are!
At the hands of her husband, TXmom? Sorry the pain we have gone thru lies squarely at the feet of Bush. President Obama is trying to get us out of the mess, w/o help from those do=nothing TP jerks.
God condemn the republicans. You know I want to use a different word then condemn!
...which explains why the President has never apologized for America.
Michael, You are true republican right wing nut. That is why I left the Young Republicans years ago , as I didn't want to sound or be like you. The end result is disgusting!
clwyd: Having had a personal experience with a Mormon who made it her life's work to ruin my mom's life, I have generalized it to a mistrust of the religion.
Every now and then ~ Let go of the security blanket you call FR and pay attention to the news around you!....lol
Lest you forget 2009
clwyd, there are zealots on both sides. You don't have to be Republican to turn people off. BTW, where's Feisty?
newday....
The cost doesn't matter but how the garment is worn... and elegant Ann has it all over Michelle and her gawky frame.
As for content of the speech: about the same elementary delivery that she uses on her frequent appearances on the Disney Channel...She is very used to talking to children....Ann Romney on the other hand was all heart and honesty.
Michael,
Time and time again I hear the same ridiculous statement...that the President was running around making an apology tour. Time and time again I ask for someone to show me ANY apology that the President has made for this nation. Time and time again, nobody can show me an apology.
How about you? Do you have anything?
Put down the talking point and slowly back away!
Oh yes, Queen Ann all heart.
"I LOVE women" about as sincere as the rest of your post.
Get over yourself.
So what bothers YOU the most about Mrs. Obama, txmom: that she is black, or that she is a Democrat?
Catty much? Good Lord. Meow.
If you're the type who would base a vote for POTUS on the candidates' (or their wives') wardrobes and physical appearance, just stay home on election day. Your country does NOT need you.
@Txmom - so, you're telling us that you would stop loving your husband after he lost his job? Damn - I feel bad for your husband...
And what, in your opinion, makes Mrs. Romney "elegant" and Mrs. Obama "gawky"? Is it simply because the 1st Lady is tall, or is there something else that informs your characterization? Do tell...
Annnnnd, you're welcome - Enjoy
http://freebeacon.com/five-times-obama-has-apologized-for-america/
Zanny, please....Bush has not been President for over three years. Move on...see how I did that? Moveon.org was an Obama movement and now that is what America truly needs, for he and Michelle to move on.
As for where the pain lay well that would be squarely at the feet of weaselly little Barney Frank and the others in Congress that hid the mismanagement and greed at Fannie, Freddie and lenders like Countrywide. It also lay at the feet of the greedy or ignorant who borrowed what they could not possibly pay back. If Fannie and Freddie had been healthy the rest of the lending industry could have migrated out of their troubles or not been perceived as too big to fail. Now that we are clear on who devastated the American economy we can also place the blame for many other economies around the globe as they were investing in US packaged financial instruments with the false information that Countrywide, Fannie and Freddie were actually working to meet their fiduciary responsibilities.
The only thing this administration has done to support those who acted criminally was to have Holder use his rubber stamp to exonerate those at fault.
I'm guessing you haven't been paying much attention....half a billion to a dead solar company, cash for clunkers, continuing to extend unemployment benefits beyond the funded program, offering worker status to illegal immigrants when so many American citizens are out of work....are you truly better off than you were four years ago? If so please share your secret because, the rest of us would really like to know.
An eloquent speech prepared by the Democratic Party and delivered VIA THE TELEPROMPTER by Michelle Obama.
Do you really think she and her husband REALLY had it tough growing up and both graduating from Harvard? Talk about being out of touch.
Bring on Biden, it's really getting interesting. He' be forced to use the teleprompter as he's out of lies.
If you're the type who would base a vote on who will grant you the biggest welfare check, just stay home on election day.
Your country DEFINATELY does not need you!!
txmom32-
What about the part of the speech where Ann Romney wagged her finger at the screen and said "do we want to raise our children to be afraid of success?" - telling me how to raise my children, and basically saying "how dare you question my husband's success".
Ann Romney talked a lot about Mitt Romney, and a lot about the problems facing women today. The glaring hole in her speech was that she never made any connection between women's issues and Mitt Romney's policies, or detailed how his policies offered any solutions to these issues.
...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand EPIC FAIL!!!
See, apologies usually use words like "SORRY" or "APOLOGIZE"...at least that's what my dad taught me. I don't see those words used here.
Try again.
LOL.....wow
Hope you're sportin' an Obummer drip cup on yer chin if that's not proof!
It's all good ~ you vote for your guy and I'll vote for America!
txmom32 -
It has been noted on innumerable occasions that the amount of "toxic loans" held by Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac was insignificant, and defaults on mortgages alone did not cause the financial crisis.
The U.S. Senate's Levin–Coburn Report determined that the root cause of the crisis was "high risk, complex financial products; undisclosed conflicts of interest; and the failure of regulators, credit rating agencies, and the market itself to rein in the excesses of Wall Street".
The 1999 repeal of the Glass–Steagall Act cleared the way for banks to make previously un-allowed risky investments. Banks issued mortgage-backed derivative financial instruments. Credit-rating agencies failed to accurately calculate the risk involved, and the government did not adjust their regulations to account for these relatively new financial instruments.
I'm guessing you haven't either. Romney/Ryan want to loosen the already lax regulations on big banks and Wall Street as well as repeal the few regulations in Dodd-Frank that have any "teeth". This will inevitably lead to another financial crisis as those banks that are "too big to fail" gamble recklessly with investors money knowing Romney/Ryan will bail them out again.
Paul Ryan - The Deficit? I Built That!
Newday
Why do you liberals automatically go the the race baiting when they have run out of substance? I could care less that she is an African American woman. I don't even think it is that she is a Democrat...there are many fine Democrats...I don't think she knows how to be a fine Democrat.
It could be because as a woman she is very weak. She was not proud of her country even though that same country offered her every opportunity at success, above and beyond so many others in this country through her fathers political connections. She pretends to promote family and her appreciation of her husband but where was she and the children when Obama's grandmother, the woman who raised him, was on her death bead...she sure wasn't in Hawaii or offering her children the chance to see their great grandmother for the last time. So I find her reference to family hollow. In spite of a tremendous education through undergrad and law school she had to be given her $$$$ part-time job at the hospital and my goodness gracious they were then showered with federal funds that Obama earmarked.
We have many great women in this country and I don't believe Michelle to be one of those...I wish she were.
Mmm...no, you don't seem to be voting for America. If you believe that any of that is an apology, you seem to be voting for some apocryphal alternate reality...but, hey, if that makes you all warm and fuzzy, knock yourself out.
Yes TXmom I am better off. My stocks have started to come out of the hole that the stock market tanking. I was laid off during Bush and found work as a contract employee (no benefits). Then my husband was laid-off, so we had to go on Cobra insurance @ $1450 per month. Two years ago I was made a full time employee w/ benefits. Last month my husband found work, so yes I am better off. I am not better off than when the Recession hit, we had to borrow against our 401Ks, but am I better off than 4 years ago, yes. And I definitely do lay the Recession at Bush's feet. We are slowly climbing out of this Recession and it is painful, but not as painful as the drop was.
And supposely TX is in great shape so why are you complaining?
Chris Michael..
I wouldn't and that premise has been tested. I also stood by him when he was ill as he has done for me. We seem to have a "real" marriage not one that was forged for political gain.
I have a very high regard for Mrs. Romney because nothing has come up to alter that perception. I find her to be a very strong woman in contrast to Michelle Obama. I believe that she has been true to her faith, true to her husband, true to her family. I take Mitt at his word when he says she could have done anything in a professional life if she had chosen that path and yet she did not in lieu of taking her job as mother to be her first priority. I think she could have probably been a professional and still raised a fine family, many women do with grace. I was touched by their genuine love for each other and the respect and admiration they show for each other in every occasion that I have seen.
As for Michelle see #1.33. I should add a positive for Michelle. I believe she is a good mother and she will put her children first as a priority. I think she made a wise choice for including her own mother in their family dynamic because who else is going to care so much for her daughters when she and her husband have other obligations. I believe that with the support the Obama Girls have a genuine opportunity to salvage their childhood in the fish bowl.
She's got an army of servants and does basically nothing, and by the way, she feels she should be PAID to be First Lady, but she feels for the "common man". What a load, they have acted like the lottery winners in the Whitehouse. She said Barak was humble- what another load- he is a narcissist who only thinks of himself- he crammed the healthcare through in an attempt to make himself the legend he is in his own mind. He and Michelle have lived off of other people's money their whole lives, Valerie Jarrett has financed them, gave Michelle a bogus high paid hospital job. You tools don't realize- a vote for Obama is a vote for Valerie Jarrett, she is the one running the country, the Obamas just want the perks and parties.
flbikerchick...
More DNC desperation...way to take the comment out of context....I might offer you the same advice about election day if you are unable to deal with context in politics.
Let me guess what desperation will lead the left to do next....collapse speech that does not fit their narrative....oh wait it has already been done.
Didn't see Moochelle's speech... cause I know what she said...
gimme gimme gimme...
The middle class and your grandchildern can't afford 4 more!!
"OBAMA Rules and the Lying GOP are Fools" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't get a chance to watch her speech last night, so I'll discuss purely the premise of the address: It makes absolute sense that she needed to be seen as a "regular person"- the American public has been watching a very different side for a few years and the campaign needs to hit the "reset" button. She has to separate herself from the exclusive vacations she's been taking with/without the President (including the separate flights 1 hour apart but going to the same place), the speeches directing people how they should live (make sacrefices and how to eat), and her appearing elitist. She's got to come across as compassionate and grounded.
On the coverage- I'm not surprised by the "different than the other campaign" comments in the articles. This is their guy, so they are going to fawn.
Did you hear the Brian Ross (ABCNews) story about the convention- He profiled how big democratic campaign donors get special access just like republican donors. How ironic as the democrats love to assail big donors. He noted how many of them got plush government jobs from their 2008 donations (ambassadorships, committee appointments, and one DOE appointment that lead to promoting the Solyndra loan that had been previously turned down by DOE vetting). Interesting thing, that same donor was back for the 2012 convention. When Mr. Ross tried to talk to him, he ran out. So please spare me the line that the democrat political machine is different. Not buying it.
Michael, When all else fails use insults! Right!
Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!,
opps sorry wrong Junta!
Ann Romney looks and is a stuck up person and Michell looks like what she is a pleasant down to earth person. She is a stuck up snob.
Republicans keep saying Romney is so successful I tend to differ on that. His great great grand pappy handed down a couple of millions, then the great grand pappy handed down did the same then grand pappy handed down millions then daddy handed down millions HOW IS THAT SUCCESS ?? The Obamas was poor and had student loans to pay off in fact they were very poor> Now they are very wealthy with hard work they succeeded by their selves thats what I call real success !!
joeny
why do you think this first lady is travelling or doing anything else more or less than her predecessors have done? Laura Bush's thing was literacy. Laura told people they should read to their children at bedtime. Michelle tells people they should eat, and have their children eat, healthier. Why is extolling the virtures of eating well evidence of a "nanny state" and extolling the virtures of reading to children at bedtime just "good common sense"? I already knew it is a good thing to read to children at bedtime, but I did not resent Laura Bush promoting that. I also know that it is good to eat well, even though I don't always do so, and I don't resent Michelle for making that part of her thing as first lady. Why do you? I seriously want to know.
Yes chiefly but the people in this Administration.
Yes and the Quasi Federal agencies...fannie and freddie were knee deep in that mess because they ignored their fiduciary responsibilities to the taxpayers and to their investors and to their clients, low and no income families. The very fact that these loans were guaranteed by the American Government offered a safety net for investors regardless of how Fannie and Freddie were run into the ground by the guy who made 100 million dollars running Fannie before he ejected to allow Frank Rains to follow in the same path.
When the conspired with countrywide to step knee deep into the business of risky no money down loans that low and no income families could not possibly pay back. They were a very large part of the predatory lending industry.
So this is a big FAIL for Obama and his cronies for offering a legal golden parachute for the principals who already made tens of millions.
So just saying again...Dodd and Frank are part of the bigger picture and problem of greed and power. I would like to see Ryan's plan get an honest evaluation, which it has not at this point. Dodd-Frank only had teeth with regard to those who were not supporting Dodd or Franks personal financial interest. Heaping regulations only on those that don't kiss your feet is not the way to move forward. If the Government is going to tinker with capitalism then they need to at least employ means that are not designed to hurt the people and companies that fund opportunity to borrow or lend.
Just to be clear...I truly don't believe in "too big to fail". Through natural attrition some businesses, even large ones, fail. Their exit from the market should allow opportunity for others to step in and fill the void. I appreciated the fact that the first step to correct the downward spiral was to negotiate the assets of a bankrupt financial institute. This was a prudent move by the Bush administration. What went on beyond that where billions of dollars were pumped into "too big to fail" was in my opinion a huge mistake.
Had Bush assumed the pain of the financial industry back in 2006 and 2007 business might be working in a forward momentum by now. All too big to fail did was prolong and deepen the pain. When Obama came in with hope and change he could have made a big difference by back tracking to keep the Government in the mediator role but instead he took the Bush "too big to fail" ideology and amped it up to keep waste and cronyism alive. Those who voted for Obama neglected the who fact that the man offered no scope of experience in free Enterprise or economics. Instead of mediating or just offering federal loans he took it a step to far throwing gasoline in the fire by insisting that the American taxpayer would fund interest in companies while tossing out the personal investments of millions of Americans.
America needs a leader who understands finance and business. America needs a leader who has too much integrity to do the whole pay to play political game. American needs a leader who can encourage private employment and small business growth instead of a President who either doesn't understand or who is attempting to make the Government omnipotent.
As for Ann waging her finger....I think you misread her intent or trusted the talking point from the wrong source. I think you can raise your children anyway you wish. I agree with Ann. I don't wish for my children to be afraid of success. If people do not like my children because my children have a high standard of their ability then the problem lies with those who are jealous not the way I parent or the characteristics of my children. I raise my daughter the same as my sons....be the best at what you wish to achieve and don't ask for special consideration...work harder and be better than your competion on an even playing field.
It amazes me how some do not know the numbers and how they have come to be. First, as far as being 'better off' than 4 years ago....we were on the brink of a depression, so we are better off, just not where we wanted to be. Second, gas has not changed, it fluctuates. I know there is a quote about $1.85/gallon, but that was a moment, we really were experiencing something similar to today pricewise. Third, the national debt went from $5.6 trillion to $10.025 trillion during Bush's leadership. Keep in mind, most of his term was during the economic upswing from the reckless lending practices. In addition, the decrease in median household income is from private industry. They have stopped giving raises, laid people off, outsourced and engage in other types of activities. Managment that is reflective of Republican beliefs.
I am neither Democratic or Republican, but it is so tiresome to listen to people quote inaccuracies while making their case. Ask yourself: What has the Republican Party done to support any improvement that the Democrats have proposed? There lies the real issue: lack of cooperation between the parties. Where would we be if they actually work together?
Txmom
I guess you slept through Bush's terms since you lay the entire economic crisis. Here's some facts:
The housing crisis was caused by several factors. But the most damaging was the banks slicing and dicing and packaging them as financial instruments. Then buying insurance on those same instruments they sold investors. Read 'House of Cards'.
But had Bush not put two wars, a tax cut (to the tune of $1.8 trillion), and the Medicare Advantafe plan on the national credit card (I.e. unfunded) the country would have been in a better position to handle the economic crisis. Housing always booms and busts. I've seen three cycles in my lifetime.
You really should learn something rather than post inane talking points that you 'heard' somebody else say.
Voting for Mitt Myth Robbeme is like asking for the same diaster we had when bush was in office but only faster.
You tell me: We currently have the lowest taxes paid by individuals and corporation in the last 50 years, this includes the current bush tax cuts.
Now if we have the bush tax cuts in place and jobs are slowly coming back do you really believe giving millionaires and billionaires another tax cut which by the way would again not be paid for well spur job growth?
Do you think stoping ACA, vouching medicare, ending social security, defunding education and telling everyone they are on their own will be better for the country? Of course not that would be absurd.
Their is not one economist that would say cutting taxes for corporations, millionaires and billionaires well have unemployment at zero. Not one. If you are voting for mitt you really believe no taxes for anyone is good for the country.
Cutting taxes = cutting programs for the least amongst us. To you I'm sure that's the American dream.
@txmom32
The great depression took 15 years to get out of.
How long should the great recession take to get out of? According to you 1 (one) F-N day. The day President Obama came into office.
Now you want us to believe that same bush team will get us out of this mess. If you believe that I have another bridge to sale you.
Admire Michelle Obama? Are you serious? Isn't this the woman who has lived in the U.S. her entire life but said after her husband was elected "For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country"? What kind of comment is that? She is basically saying that what this country has stood for almost 250 years is NOT what SHE wants and was not proud of this country. And only when her husband, who promised to "transform" this country away from what it has always been, does she have pride?
She doesn't know what a great country we live(d) in. And now that her husband has made it worse with high unemployment with expectations it will get higher, a stagnant GDP growth, nearly $6 Trillion more in debt, and no expectation it will get better she wants to continue the decline of this country?
Her husband seems like an okay guy but we don't need an "okay guy" that is not going to fix this economy and how can Obama know how to run this country when he has never run so much as a lemonade stand.
Obama has been a failure on every level and when the president's campaign is "I suck but my opponent suck's worse" or "I made the economy bad but my opponent would have made it worse" then you REALLY have problems. BTW, it appears the new Democrat slogan is "you are doing better, you just don't know it". Pathetic. Simply pathetic. And so is Michelle - pathetic.
Zaney...
The stock market started to decline when Obama beat Hillary for the DNC Nomination...It went in full downward spiral when an inexperienced President was elected and he publicly vilified those who generate jobs and lending.
So, just curious...did you exhaust all of the unemployment benefits before you found work? Not knowing what you did for a living makes discussing your situation difficult at best. I know a great many people who lost their good paying jobs when Obama assaulted the energy industry and refused to sell leases and allow drilling. I know many people who lost health care jobs because of the uncertainty of the Obama administration particularly at the time when Nancy P was screaming we have to pass the bill to know what is in the bill. FYI...with the bill our company insurance is hovering around $1,100 a month for myself and three children and we are no longer able to contribute to the health savings account that was part of our retirement plan to supplement Medicare in our retirement years. At this point I doubt there will be medicare when retirement comes around. Too many fingers in that pie for too long
I am impressed that you were both out of work for so long and able to retain your portfolio, congratulations because many families have fallen so low from such a long recession/depression that they have nothing left....particularly if their retirement investments were in old GM, renewable energy industry, or many other companies who have been forced to hold on to cash waiting for a favorable climate in American business.
I am not better off than when the Recession hit, we had to borrow against our 401Ks, but am I better off than 4 years ago, yes. And I definitely do lay the Recession at Bush's feet. We are slowly climbing out of this Recession and it is painful, but not as painful as the drop was.
Yes economic health in our state is important. Economic health in our country is also important and like you our investments have suffered greatly because they are affected by the sad reality of shrinking and failed companies. Particularly those that have been set aside so my children can go to University. My daughter has three years before she is going to start using the "529" funds and they have not recovered to pre-Obama value. Our boys have a few more years for their funds to grow. As for our personal investments. Obama and old Ben have thrashed our Bonds. The low interest rates and Obama giveaways have encouraged many of our tax free bonds to pay out early. The up side is we have much cash on hand to invest when we have a President who understand the need for economic, autonomy when it comes to dignity in personal economic responsibility.
Solutions: The Great Depression took 15 years because FDR used "big government" and "spending" to fix. The Great Depression should have taken less than 2 years to recover IF the government had simply initiated policies to help the PRIVATE sector. Give the private sector the confidence that you want to help THEM and it will recover. FDR did the opposite. More confusion. More regulations. More taxes. More policies. More spending. And the Great Depression took nearly 5 years to have positive growth again when the average length of a recession in the last 100 years is 1 year and 1 month.
And if the FDR policies were SO great then how come 4 years after the official end of the depression (March 1933) the economy went into ANOTHER recession in May 1937? If the FDR policies were SO great why did ANOTHER recession happen just 4 years later? Because you CAN'T fix the economy with government. Can't happen. History shows this and FDR actually DELAYED the recovery for nearly a decade. If it wasn't for World War II no telling how long the FDR catastrophic policies would have kept our economy stagnant.
So Obama decides to follow the same FDR logic and policies - and we got the same result. Longest recovery of a recession since the Great Depression. Longest stagnant economy since the Great Depression. If Obama had spent the energy on fixing the PRIVATE sector within 12 months we would have been growing at 4% to 6% annually. That is a typical recovery.
Only Obama can follow the same policies of FDR, extend a recession and stagnant economy for 4 years as expected with big government policies we saw historically with FDR, and expect a different result. The sad part is this economy is EXACTLY what was expected. High unemployment, low GDP growth, massive debt, and an economy no better off. How could Obama follow the FDR policies and EXPECT a different result? Only an incompetent president would duplicate an idea that failed previously and not expect it to fail again.
For all of you conservatives who cannot comprehend entire paragraphs:
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2008/02/michelle-obam-1-2/
You see, when you take just a few words from what someone says, instead of the whole sentence, it sounds nothing like what they actually said.
Michelle Obama did NOT say she was "not proud of her country." In fact, she said exactly the opposite.
It doesn't matter the reason WHY Michelle is not proud of this country - it only matters IF she is proud of this country and she said she wasn't. That is like a daughter saying "I hate my parents because they make me wash the car". Doesn't matter WHY she hates her parents - she says she hates her parents. So it doesn't matter WHY Michelle is not proud of this country - she simply is "not proud of this country".
Don Doh...
Really attacking me on my personal e-mail. That is certain a new Liberal low.....It seems you are just incensed and discombobulated because you cannot defend your position on a public forum so you have to attack without even a reasonable rebuttal privately. I would say shame on ya but it is really just so sad and pathetic that I have to have some level of pity for you. Bless your heart darlin.
So ProBusiness covered that nicely.
Now where did you seem me every say Obama only had "one F_N day? I didn't and your obvious disappointment that the entire nation has waken up and is not all falling over ourselves to get on our knees and grant Obama one more term is just mind boggling. He has had almost four years at this point and all he did was continue the Bush years on steroids, promote jobs and federal investment in China and enact bad legislation that we or the next generation can ill afford.
The fact that you believe this is a new Bush team is just sad and you might want to hang on to that bridge because Obama will be in the market to buy it in his one little pay to play world.
OH, I get it txmom: you hate Mrs. Obama because she is black.
Probusiness, You are part of the military industrial complex that a fellow republican years ago warned us against! (IKE) Now that I'm no longer a fellow republican, thank God, and can see that the former party of mine has been bought and paid for by millionaires, billionaires, corporations and business it is nice to read your words to show me I was right and so was IKE!
Probusiness, Frankly I'm not proud of my country either. Two illegal wars and our former president up for trial in the Hague for war crimes, two lost wars, $5,000,000,000,000 down the drain for the two lost wars, 7,200 soldiers lives wasted, soldiers cutting off fingers of dead Afghans for souvenirs , soldiers mass killings in our military bases, urinating on dead bodies. All the while asking for me!
I see corporate profits were up 60% lst quarter, but of course taha isn't big enough for the Pro-business world is it? GREEDY son of guns aren't we.
ProBusiness:
I am not Black, in fact I am of Caucasian descent (Armenian, people who actually LIVE in the Caucasus mountains) and I say, as an American born and bred that I have had many occasions to NOT be proud of my country.
If you are of any age at all, you lived here during Jim Crow, when violence against Blacks was routine and promoted by institutions both social and legal. Not proud.
You might remember the war in Viet Nam, when social protest swept the country. Protest IS the American way. When we were protesting that war, we were not proud of what our country was doing. Quite the contrary.
This pride for those of us who have any common sense, is not "unconditional positive regard," but depends on the body politic/government doing the right thing. That's what distinguishes democracy from jingoism.
If you are of any age or wisdom at all, you understand that income inequity and insecurity (not inequality, that is different) is causing a social rift that could well lead to revolution, not against the "sacred Motherland/Fatherland" but against the institutionalized robbery that unregulated Capitalism has become.
If you are of any age and intelligence, and not a defensive and privileged male person, you might remember the feminist movement of the 70's, when we had to protest and struggle to secure equal civil rights for women. This is an ongoing struggle, as evinced by the Republican platform plank about abortion. Hard to be proud of and vote for a vision of humanity that treats one gender like immoral and clueless children.
I have traveled widely in many different cultures, and I know that democracy is the way to go to bring prosperity and civil liberty, but I also know that human nature is the same the world over, and GREED inevitably leads to corruption.
To preserve, protect and cultivate the qualities of democracy that one can truly be proud of, there must be the corrective interplay of intention and dissent. And as long as they are voted into office, this extends even to the ultra-right wing.
The American Dream is tainted by greed and corruption. This leads to really stupid ideas like "trickle down" economics and the market "regulating " itself. People are beginning to see this, so we have IMF and OWS protests.
As for climbing out of the great depression: you must know as well as anyone that then, it took mobilizing the "industrial/military complex" to bring back full employment. But, I ask you, do we want an economy that can only flourish when we are at war? It's time to cultivate peace time prosperity, not to attack Iran.
So, when Michelle says she is proud of her country for electing a President who addresses these issues in a sensible way, I get it. And I'll be proud when Obama is re-elected, too.
I don't care how much her dress cost and I think she looks lovely no matter what she wears.
First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years–about
how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out” and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale–however well-delivered–was one great, big, colorful lie.
Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They attended elite schools: Michelle went to Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s
upper class, while Barack attended Punahou, the private prep school for the top stratum of Hawaiian society. They were accepted to Ivy League schools despite undistinguished credentials, and both attended Harvard Law School.
“Believe it or not, when we were first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were actually higher than our mortgage,” Michelle said. That sounds like a raw deal–but in fact reflects their fortunate circumstances. They had both just graduated from a very expensive law school, and their combined income from cushy law firm jobs dwarfed the repayments. Barack also soon enjoyed a second salary from the University of Chicago.
They had expensive tastes, reflected in the $277,500 two-bedroom condo they bought in 1993–a high price even by today’s standards. Several years later, they moved into their $1.65 million mansion in Hyde Park–with the help of fraudster Tony Rezko. Barack often told a story of hardship on the campaign
trail in 2008 about having his credit card declined–once. The fact that he thought this counted as real hardship speaks volumes
It seems Michelle is an accomplished liar too, just like her husband!
Michael, you are a moron. Not once did the president apologize or say he or we were sorry for any past actions. Those 5 sound bytes do not support the GOP claim... As soon as I read that the article was calling fact check and politico liberal, I knew i was on a Republican blog rag...
The right disdains all fact checkers as liberal...
Madeline: So much incorrect in your post I don't know where to start. But the first thing I will say is why is it ALWAYS the liberals that bring up race? I said nothing about race but didn't take you 4 words to bring up race. Race is not the issue. Michelle said "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country". That is a pretty straightforward comment and if someone says "for the first time" that means no time previous. So either Michelle lied OR she has never been proud of her country.
Then you ramble on about this - then ramble on about that - then ramble on about this - and so on. Are there times I am disappointed with the direction of my country? Absolutely - like the policies and record (or lack) of accomplishments of this president. But in November when Romney is elected president I would NEVER say "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country". Why? Because I have been proud BEFORE!! I would say something like "Now with a president like Romney that knows how to fix this country I can be be proud again". The key word there is "again". Michelle said "for the first time" which means she had NEVER been proud of her country.
Then you spoke of "mobilizing industrial/military complex" to get out of the Great Depression. Incorrect. To fix the economy you need the private markets to have confidence in the direction of the country. So what government should be doing is simply making the PRIVATE sector work more efficiently and the economy recovers. How? Make things easier and don't make more difficult. That creates "uncertainty". FDR did the opposite and created uncertainty. He initiated trade restrictions. Initiated wage restrictions. Initiated cumbersome regulations and policies. He RAISED taxes. And I can go on and on. It took World War II to get out of the Great Depression because FDR stifled the ability of the Private Sector to grow. And BTW ONLY the private sector can grow the economy. It is impossible for the public sector (government) to grow the economy.
FDR actually created more damage to this economy and a UCLA economists study (I believe it was 2004?) found that FDR's policies EXTENDED the Great Depression by 7 years. NOT because what he did was "right" but rather what FDR did was "wrong". Just like what Obama did was "wrong" and has extended a stagnant economy now going on 4 years with no expectation of improvement on the horizon. You do bad government policy you get bad results and Obama's bad government policy has damaged this economy. This economy should have been fixed within 6 to 9 months if Obama had done the RIGHT policies - but he didn't and we are all suffering for it. Replace the failure of Obama with someone that knows how business and an economy works, like Romney, and within 6 months we will see economic growth not seen for decades.
New day...
Comprehension must be an issue for you. You tried this once and I explained myself....#1.33...just becauseyou collapsed my discussion doesn't mean it changes the conversation but if you continue to do the same thing you will fulfill the requirement for insanity or at the very least you will show incompentence.
I have no problem with Michelle being African American. Condi Rice is an African American woman as well as a very strong woman and I have overwhelming respect for her. I found Mia Love engaging and look forward to hearing more from her because she is a very strong and resolute female leader. The woman I voted for, Jacquie Chaumette, for State Representative (she did loose unfortunately, largely due to the manipulation of our elections and playing games with out voting map by the liberal judges, DNC, La Raza folks and Eric Holder. One would believe these folks don't wish to see a black woman succeed. But ever the stalward she changed homes to move back to the district.) did a fantastic job in her role in local government. and yes she is an African American Conservative voice. Michelle is a weak woman and I have little regard for that quality in her, she seems very content to just play a role. If it makes you feel better I have little regard for other weak women like Nancy Pelosi, Janet Reno and her underling who thinks it is OK for a woman sexually harasses men, please note they are all three Caucasian women right off the bat.
You sir obviously haven't compared your 2008 401k statements with your 2012 ones. You are also oblivious to the obstructionism going on in D.C.
When Obama took office, the DJIA was in the tank, near 7k points. Today, after nearly 4 years in office, it is over 13,000 points.
Given the choice of moving forward, or going back the way things were; I'll take the chance that moving forward is in our best interests. After all, we're still waiting for Romney to release details on his health care plan, his educational plan, his foreign policy details, fill in gaps in his economic policies, his 2011 tax returns.
We have a choice.... a vision for the future that builds the middle class, or promises without details...
"An adoring crowd" How true. We do adore the First Lady. She is the epitome of the term, ""First Lady."
lol, 'First Lady' of the zoo perhaps! I would give you that for Mooshell!
Obama was wearing shoes too small dating Michelle? He was an attorney. Why the need to rewrite history, claiming to be poor?
Nice finish to a great essay Robin (1.62)!
The lies of the left are spreading like flies....!
So Michelle gives a great speech with great inspiration, and we get racist comments about her looks?
The trolls are thick today.
Eric...and what exactly impressed you about her speech? Anything particularly inspiring that you would like to share?
Ray: Just so you are aware an economy is NOT measured by the stock market - it is measured by GDP, unemployment, business expansion, consumer confidence, and so on. And EVERY indicator is poor. First, the stock market is a global market so the stock market is not based entirely on the U.S. economy. Secondly, we have U.S. companies in the stock market (Coca Cola, Microsoft, etc.) that are growing NOT because the United States is growing (it isn't) but that the global markets are. Lastly, the stock market went through a "crash". That it recovered is NOT Obama's praise and quite the opposite. The stock market was going to get back where it was on its own and STILL has not got back to the over 14,000 it was before.
What we WANT is a president to put in place the policies necessary to GROW the economy. If Obama had done that our stock market would have flew PAST the previous high and THEN you can brag on your 401k. The growth of the stock market so far has been anemic and isn't going to advance until we have a president that puts economy growing policies in place. So for someone to use the stock market as the gauge of our economy is sad...... To not understand the financial and economic markets enough to know, first, how to measure an economy and, second, to say the current Dow Jones measurement is good is even sadder............
The bottom line is that currently the odds of Obama winning on Nov 6th are 76.3% to Romney's 23.7% --- better than 3-to-1 odds. Ladbrooks is giving Romney only an 8% chance of winning. nd more and more it looks like by giving Florida to Obama, Romney must carry every tossup state by a significant margin to even have a chance of winning. And for the GOP to try to yell louder and longer will only make it worse.
Chris: You know stating that type of made up jargon doesn't help giving you any type of legitimacy.
First, to try and lay "odds" when one convention just started and the other just finished as well as there NOT have been even one debate? You might as well pick a number on the roulette wheel.
Second, Ladbroks? Really? You going to an online betting and gaming website for your "odds"? I have a better idea: go to the polls. Even though it's early (not even a debate yet) let's see what LIKELY voters have to say:
From Politico:
Latest CNN Poll: Obama 48%, Romney 48%
Latest CBS Poll: Obama 46%, Romney 45%
Latest Washington Post/ABC Poll: Romney 47%, Obama 46%
Latest Gravis Marketing Poll: Romney 47%, Obama 44%
Real Clear Politics:
Latest Gallup: Obama 47%, Romney 46%
Latest Rasmussen Poll: Romney 48%, Obama 45%
What a silly comment to make. To go to an online betting website IN EUROPE to get some wacky numbers and try to present it as an intelligent addition to this discussion. Sad someone would do something like that and present it as a legitimate piece of information............
ProBusiness, you STILL cannot read and understand a direct quote. Then you chide others for not adhering to your statements. I suppose it makes you feel better to cling to your interpretation rather than the facts. Sad.
Funny Chris...you might not put too much stock in what your bookie tells you. Even NBCnews has an article discussing the DNC disappointment with Florida. Now, perhaps Obama is planning to use his ace in the hole, illegal immigrant vote.
Fielden: Expand please? I love how liberals criticize but don't make a point. To tell me I cannot read and make a critical comment but not even mention WHAT I didn't read or WHY my interpretation is wrong is typical of a liberal. But making a point is not a liberal strong point.
That's why many liberals resort to calling names like stupid, fool, racist, greedy, and so on. Because they can't put together a valid point and defend their position. So call me sad if you want - typical liberal calling a name and no justification or explanation why.
TXmom, why should it matter whether I used up my unemployment? My husband and I pay into it, we should be able to use it when we need it. It is a lovely deduction on our payroll stub every 2 weeks. And no, the stock market tanked with Bush, as the banks were exploding. It had nothing to do with Obama & Hillary.
If you are talking about drilling in the gulf being stopped, sorry, our environment is important. If we had to stop the drilling due to slimey corporate policies, it is the corporations fault, not the gov't for stopping it. I want a clean safe environment for my children and theirs to grow up in.
As to a business man leading the country, maybe we should have elected Ken Lay. Because we known that ALL business CEOs are fine up-standing people.
Zannie....Yes you and your husband and my husband and millions of workers and employers around the country. The typical reserve is rough 26 weeks worth of support while a new job is sought. However, many people, perhaps not you or your husband ,exhausted that 26 weeks and and then much more than that with the extensions. The money for the extensions to unemployment came from tax dollars not payroll associated deductions.
This President made a choice to go into debt supporting a venture that was just throwing money at the problem instead of supporting small business or even individuals with skill sets to become entrepreneurs, who would then in-turn employ people who were out of work and pay into the FICA system. Once again Obama was using tactics that did not work for Bush, making the same mistake was unnecessary. At the same time formerly employed people were looking for jobs the President was pushing for programs to employ former convicts. Then he actually did a good thing and offered incentive for employers to hire veterans. Now he is opening up the job pool to millions of illegal immigrants when our unemployment is well above the standard that he claimed in t-1 campaign promises.
I think you might check your facts...the Banks imploded under Bush because the Dems in congress testified that all was well in Fannie, Freddie and the lenders and created a really big wall of obstruction. If they would have allowed oversight a view into Fannie and Freddie the institutional lenders would have been identified much earlier particularly predatory lending companies like Countrywide.. The stock market is a whole different issue than the mortgage debacle. If you don't understand it I can't possibly explain it to you here.
As for stopping drilling in the Gulf... I think you truly gobble up talking points without considering our natural world Just because the Horizon had a leak does not mean that every platform in the gulf was leaking. Thousands of people were prevented from working by this President. One more nail in our coffin of reliance upon foreign oil. Obama's strangle hold on fossil fuels was absurd and his very liberal investment into defunct green technology was nothing more than a way to siphon off monetary resources and increase dependence on foreign oil. So perhaps as a good faith gesture you could do a bit of independent study and do a very simple internet search on how much petroleum is naturally occurring in our environment. Much like cow farts and methane tar balls on the beaches of the world occur naturally. It really was very unnecessary to have families out of work and even more unnecessary to assess damages to only one company while several years later we are sill waiting for some reasonable investigation into the cause. If you want pretty beaches for your children I might suggest Hawaii or even the Virgin Islands.
Didn't Ken Lay die? Perhaps you might consider a more contemporary view on the American Business man...I hear Buffett plans to be around a while...he has about the same tax record as Timmy Gheitner..Obama likes both of them so maybe one of those guys would step up and relieve the DNC of their current embarrassment.
After 30 years of working, we had given plently of money to the unemployment fund and people on unemployment spend that money on items to survive so it goes back into the economy. That helps our nation more than tax breaks for the so-called job-creators.
The drill stop was to check the other rigs and confirm that they were safe. Why would anyone take the word of other corporations after BP? That would be grossly irresponsible. We need green energy, as much as you love your oil, it is not going to last forever. The oil companies do not need their tax breaks or credits and the money should go to finding something new. If I want pretty beaches in the Gulf, it is my right as an American to make sure that they are there.
And you texans seemed to love Ken Lay when he was around, so I gave an example close to home. If you wanted jobs why did the GOP block the Infrastructure bill and the Small Business bill? Pure Politics, and extremely sad. The GOP would rather hurt the US than give any kind of victory to Obama. The only embarrassment is in your mind and definitely is no where near the embarrassment of Bush & Cheney.
I am never going to change your mind and you definitely are not changing mine. I don't think much of any of you that get on here and want to Take back America or America for Americans (1920's KKK slogan), but you are entitled to your opinion as I am mine. I don't believe that you do have America's interest at heart, I believe that you have only your interests.
Zannie...Let me get this straight...you paid in for 30 years and so you are entitled to take your time replacing lost income. So are you saying that you and your husband maxed out the generous entitlement you were owed? Fair enough, you should get yours because you paid in and to hades with everyone else you want yours.
Please...the drill stops were to warn the American people that they would be at the mercy of Obama and his half a brain trust. He held the power to shut off access to US drilling and he had the final word on many fine people who make a good living from harvesting a natural resource. What is grossly irresponsible is to displace people who wish to work a good job at good pay. Keeping in mind that it wasn't just the folks on the rig who lost, it was the employee and their families, it was the ports and their workers, it was certain administrative positions that were no longer valid because the income stream was shut off. It was Realtors who couldn't sell homes because their target market had no income and the municipalities who lost revenue because they gain nothing from foreclosures. It was the bars and restaurants and the dry cleaners and the donations to schools and charity. It was cutting off opportunity for men and women who wished to work and were stuck with some gratuitous stipend instead of an income to support their families.
I agree with you about green energy and well many of the Petroleum related business also promote, explore and invest in next gen power. But I am sure all you can see are big, bad oil companies and not that these companies wish to be a part of that industry. They are also an industry that support hundreds of thousands of people in the United States alone. It is also a very generous industry to their employees. Competitive pay, good vac time, commitment to work life balance, very good (even better before the demands of Obama care) health insurance options, between the many companies they are committed to promote from within the various career specialities that have grow with these companies. As employers I can't imagine too many other large industries that offer a better climate for job satisfaction. Perhaps the medical industry and some in the tech industry. Exactly what is your knowledge and the "tax breaks" that are offered to the energy industry? As for "your right" to pretty beaches in the gulf...you really don't know too much about the gulf of Mexico based on your remarks. As for pretty beaches you have to go to South Padre in Texas to find a "pretty" beach. You can also go to some areas of east Florida and find some very nice beaches....the rest of the gulf is either manicured by man to fight nature or is left natural and quite dirty. If you think you have a "right" to fight nature go for it bu be prepared to open up you wallet and pay your fair share...nature will always trump man.
Wow, you are out of touch and showing desperation. Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling are actually dirty words to most in Texas and particularly Houston. Enron left many people that I know without jobs and without pensions. Not just Enron employee but those funds invested on behalf of teachers pensions, civil servant pensions, and many others....epiphany...he was an early version of Obama...wreaking havoc on the hard working middle class by decimating the job market and hostile take over of private companies....Obama did to the whole nation with regard to energy what Lay and his cronies did to California. While we are on the subject of politics and Lay...He was a very good contributor to Bill Clinton, Ann Richards God rest her soul, Charles Schumer, Shiela Jackson Lee, we can't forget good ol Charlie Wilson God rest his soul,...So given his generosity and invitations for junkets by Bill Clinton you might accept the fact that Lay was very bipartisan with his political contribution and well in receiving favor from these politicians. Perhaps before you think you are being witty you do some fact checking.
If you are talking about HR 4078 my congressman supported the effort and it passed. He also supported H Amdt 385 and glad he did. You do understand that the Gridlock in the Senate is "pure politics" on both sides? tax and spend v. personal responsibility and smaller government. This isn't new and well the President has certainly informed his ranks to hold the my way or no way perspective. Which could be a very good reason to vote him out and support a President that will be able to work across partisan lines. You did it...you couldn't defend Obama's abysmal record so you throw "Bush/Cheney" into the mix.
Wow your closing was just stunning....You want yours back from 30 years of FICA and yet you are slamming me for a personal agenda, throwing in the KKK and neglecting the New Black Panther party contributions of force and well La Raza's contribution of undocumented people insisting that they have a seat at the big table as a "special" class of people. What an insane one sided spiral.
I do have America's interest at heart and I certainly wish to see a strong economy, unemployment under 8% as promised, industry and business encouraged rather than punished because when our government extracts funds from industry and business hard working people in the upper, middle and emerging economic employees and business owners suffer...and for what hot air and failure coming from the Left. Yes I want my country back where we see a bright future of innovators to thrive. No one will thrive with high unemployment and no one will thrive if a Government insists that it owns its people. Perhaps you wish to be a "kept" person but I won't ever be "kept" nor will my children.
You are so misinformed it is scary. My brother in law works for a major energy company in TX at a high level and he admits the tax breaks go to nice bonuses. the rest of your rant is not worth discussing. I am not a kept person, I have a brain and I care for all Americans, even people like you. I am sick of GOP lies and the me, me, me mind set.
I can defend Obama record, we are climbing slowly out of the Bush/Cheney mess that you want to forget about. And fyi, my husband and I did not max out our unemployment. My comment was that unemployment benefits go back into economy, not like to joke of tax breaks for the so-called job makers.
Best of luck to you and yours, and may we as a country go forward and not backwards.
Helluva speech, highlighting how two kids of modest means came to occupy the White House. I grew up believing that this could happen. Now, I'm not so sure. I think Mrs. Obama's speech was a lot more reassuring in that regard.
Mrs. Obama showed a sincerity, a connection with the American Experience that was entirely missing from Queen Ann's speech.
She made it very clear WHY her husband should be re elected, and why the Romneys are exactly the wrong people to lead this nation.
Brilliant speech, even more brilliant delivery! One can only be proud of to have Mrs. Obama grace the nation as First Lady.
Withe a wave of her classy hand, and a brilliant smile, she instantly made Ann look like a pasty, giggly, squirmy, bleached-out, privileged schoolgirl. Then she spoke, and laid all remaining doubts to rest.
Michelle clearly illustrated what an easy choice this election is. Back to the high-end dressage business for you, Little Miss "I Love All You Women" Ann...
(Chortle)
Trying to make yourself feel better for voting a clueless lawyer? With a wave of her classy hand, really? Such a tool.
Crystal, your reference to the POTUS as a clueless lawyer and your silly avatar indicate that you are the true tool....
Excellent speech !
Now watch all the naysayers make fools of themselves with their epic pettiness and jealousy .
Example; Michael1969 and the tooth comment. The boy's as superficial as makeup!

I have been saying for some time now that the biggest difference between right-wing Republicans and the rest of the world isn't so much what they SAY they believe - it's the kinds of people they are. They start almost every thought from a negative position, and then scramble around trying to find something, ANYTHING to support that. That explains why they will accept any distortion, distraction, or outright prevarication (that means a "lie" to you wingers who have allowed yourselves to read this far). I'll offer as an example the "apology" nonsense from Michael 69 and the silly teleprompter reference from kkwilson. Once these guys get what they think is a really cool talking point they just absolutely refuse to abandon it, no matter how often it's proven incorrect or an outright lie. What a lonely and pointless life they must lead. I really feel sorry for them, as there seems to be way for them to try to change their lack direction.
Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!,
I'll sum it up for you. Extreme Rightwing whackers of the sort that post on here actually vehemently HATE "Libruls and Demcrats" because of our vision for America. We are in power and they know chances are Obama will win reelection. They are basically dishonest people. They have not a shred of balance or fairness in their arguments so deep is their utter hate....They seem incapable of any sort of balanced thought process. To them that is weakness. They are that insecure. They are very very differnt from most fairmeinded people. Just my observations..
Michelle and her incompetent husband are the laughing stock of the civilized world and are a curse upon America. Both Barry and Michelle are about as appealing as warts on hog's butt!!!
Their demise after November will be quick and sure.
"demise"? For real? hog's butt?
Great talking points if you are ignorant...
Very good speech. There is something so humbling and encouraging when people who work hard and struggle to succeed remember where they came from and that struggle. I agree with one of the news anchors, both of our candidates clearly "Married up".
On my way to the convention! The First Lady was just WOW!!! I am even more determine to fight for the poor and elderly! I can not wait to hear Bill Clinton and my great president!!
President Obama 2012
Tommy,
Did you ever consider that you might be mentally challenged? That the country has a major failure of the education system is painfully obviousif the Gomer Pyle, golly-gee, mentality you disply is typical for the rest of you screwy Oblabber supporters.
and the substance in your comment is....????
dangstraightup
Go back to school and learn to spell, you"re a disgrace.
If all the Government layoffs had not happened, then unemployment would be under 7%.
All part of that great Republican economic recovery plan. These people claim to love America. The problem with all that is they really Hate Americans. I wish this guy could give this speech at the convention. Every American should wake up to what these people are really about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGAvwSp86hY
Had the GOP not been obstructionist, the rate would be lower than 7%
The First Lady knocked it out of the park... her warmth and charisma enveloped the crowd. I found her speech to be very impassioned and honest... and I was once again struck by the thought that I am very proud to have the Obamas as President and First Lady of our great country. Let's not forget her stunning dress, too!
So, you think Moochelle knocked it out of the park? Her speech was a watered down version of Ann Romney's (so was her pink dress a watered down version to Ann's red one)--only Moochelle lacked REAL sincerity!! You people who still support him--I just can't fathom where you've been living for the past 4 years!
Clearly there's not much you can fathom really. How about you sit there in bewilderment and let those of us who can, do.
I've been living in the nice house on the three acres; I didn't have 4 years ago...
The first lady is a beautiful woman inside and out. Sorry that upsets you to the point of third grade name calling.
reallysuz: another bigot.
By the way, using Limbaugh's language to describe the First Lady of this land tells us about your IQ and insight.
Both way below average.
Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!, Evita!,
Because the "American Dream' is to make a lifelong career/profession of living off the taxpayer.
Yes, Paul Ryan has done exactly that.
...just like Paul Ryan!
Neither the President nor the Republican candidates will get my vote this November.
What about the book royalties? Wake up and smell the coffee!!!
Like Paul Ryan?
Don't forget - Mitt Romney made his fortune by borrowing huge amounts of money that other people paid back.
"I Built That"? What did Mitt Romney ever build? Cars or airplanes? No, he built massive piles of debt.
Romney quickly gave up on building companies from the ground up and instead used massive debt to acquire existing firms. Romney then racked up debt at the acquired company, sucked out exorbiant management fees, liquidated the assets and left the company (or the government) holding the bag.
The interest payments on the debt were federally subsidized via the tax deduction on the interest, and Romney's earning were taxed at the 15% "Carried Interest" rate. Basically Romney made his money off the federal tax code, which makes him a taxpayer-subsidized billionaire.
Paul Ryan - The Deficit? I Built That!
Get your facts straight! Dummy
Brian
Neither the President nor the Republican candidates will get my vote this November.
Then the politicians win. The goal of many politicians is to get you not to vote for the other candidate, not so much get you to vote for them.
It's real simple. Ask these questions
Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago. (me clearly NO - employed to unemployed to Under employed, no contributions to retirement for 3 yeatrs now)
Is your family better off than 4 years ago. (me clearly, NO - my wife's boss will lose his place of business if he cannot secure a new loan, so far nothing, have a brother, who's employer layed off, and asked employees to take unpaid time off, have another brother cannot find work, and more people than ever fail to either pay or pay in full, My sister still can't get Health insurance because of cost)
Are the people you know better off than 4 years ago? I have several former co-workers still laid off, One neighbor is now underemployed vs fully employed 4 years ago.
What congressional/Presidential policies have we been following for the last 4 years? Democrats held the house and senate from 2007 - 2011. A president proposes a direction, but congress writes what direction we are going. In 2009 - 2011 the democrats held the White House too. They pushed through the bulk of their system. In 2011 the Repbulicans came in a put a stop to more of this system. They cannot pass anything to change the direction in that position, so we have continued to experience democrat polices.
Being the economy is expanding at a lower rate than even the great depression, and it's rise really only began after the Republicans took over the house. I think dumping the democrats and their policies is the way to go.
DB - If you believe that this election is Republican vs Democrat / us against them / instead of which party and candidate most closely matches your vision of proper government, you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. The lesser of two evils is still an evil. I quit voting for the lesser of two evils that the two major parties represent many elections ago.
Bla...bla..bla..Actions speak louder than words. And the obummers are very light on action unless you count in the negative direction.
Based on the things talked about at yesterdays convention, your comment is unfounded.
health care reform, ending DADT, out of Iraq and war in Afghanistan winding down, 2+ years of straight job growth after losing 500,000+ jobs per month, fair pay act. None of these are negative actions as you would claim.
however, I agree that actions speak louder than words. all the words spoken last night had action to back them up, they highlighted what the president and his democrat allies had done. everything you were told last week didn't, it was the sky is falling and you have to elect us to stop it when the only policies that they are putting forth are the same ones that caused the problem.
Health care reform is a huge negative! Thank you for letting me support you MORE with FREE health care while I pay for it! Out of Iraq...we were leaving... not a big deal. Job growth...PLEASE let's not go there...these guys try to skew the numbers and still there's no growth. DADT...that's what America really needed focus on? Really? How about him apologizing to Afgans for our brave men and women? How about his FAILED economic policies? We could list many, many more so let's just say it. The Obummers are FAILURES and those who support them are entitleist who think everyone else should support them.
Just out of curiosity JT what would it take for you to be happy with the president? 05 unemployment? The dismantling of the government?
What do you want from the president of the united states? If its either of the first two I just listed what makes you think any president is capeable of it? How much do you think Mitt Romney can really, realisticly do if he gets elected? He will still have to deal with a democratic majority in the senate. He's not very likely to get any of his proposal's pased.
When people posting on this site use derogatory personal remarks and insulting language about someone else's physical appearance, it makes me wonder how ugly the person is who's making the remarks. One thing is for sure: people who engage in personal insults and judge a person's physical appearance are very ugly on the inside where it really counts. And I do believe that all this personal hatred toward the Obamas is brought about simply because they are black.
Cat, I was thinking something along the same lines when I read a line taking the First Lady to task over her teeth. That was so undignified. How is it that we have lost our sense of decency and our manners?
Some of us have, some of us haven't. Some of us never had those things in the first place.
You knew someone would play the race card. Its all you got. I didnt see anyone on here last week taking up for Mrs. Romney when Fiesty and her minions were calling her names and making fun of her.
Libs=Hypocrites
It's the anonimity of the internet that helps this, of course. These pigs can say the most vile things simply because they're protected sitting out there in cyberspace. It's cowardly, but about what you'd expect from the extreme right wing...What's funny is all of the thinly veiled racial references...but somehow when you call them on it, we're the ones playing the "race card." Hilarious...
Cat, we are of like mind. Thank you for putting it so well!
My grandmother always said the guilty pig squeals. All it took was a comment about race to make Dogs80 squeal like a pig.
Both parties are full of crap. Do you idiots really think they give a damn about you little people? lol How stupid do you have to be? They are all about having power, and having money. They spew nonsense and you people swallow it down and fight amongst yourselves, while they look down on you and laugh. What a bunch of buffoons. The best we could do is nuke DC and start over. Nice job, Puppets!! Keep dancing while you're being used.
Kenva, you sound like a disgruntled OWS protestor... I disagree with you. I honestly believe that Barack DOES care about the middle class and poor and Romney does not.
Anyone that calls for the nuclear destruction of D.C. needs serious pharmacology help....
Our First Lady is a National Treasure!
Since when did monkey $h!t become a national treasure. What has this family contributed to our nation? NOTHING!
You proud of being a bigot JT? Shame on you. So glad you do not represent decent Americans.
Wow! I cannot believe that comment. What a cheap, tawdry, racist comment.
JT
You are a POS rac!st P!G.
I can't stand Obummer, he and his family have done nothing but disgrace our nation so that makes me a racist. Doubtful!
JT,
You are also a low information voter that doesn't know anything. You people are the ones that voted for another know nothing, Sarah Palin in the last election.
And this time around you support the likes of Willard Mitt-Wit, and Lying Ryan the talking lying buffoons, as the Republican choice for President and Vice President of the United States. You people really sit your bar low.
Your language is that of a bigot. Own what you are.
People - why even respond to an ignorant f*ck like JT? Let him wallow in his own filth...The funny thing is he's probably too stupid to even understand how racist his comment even is...
JOB1,
Please use correct grammar when informing another that they lack intelligence. Thank you
JT - Monkey see monkey do. See ya in November.
Obama/Biden 2012
JT
You, sir, are a moron.
How's that for grammar?
No critiquing speeches from Chuck Todd this week. Not one. Single. Critique.
There has always been and will always be bias in the media. But in the past, they at least tried to keep it hidden.
It couldn't possibly be that the speeches ARE better? When you don't see what you want to see, it's gotta be media bias! Sheez, it's only 9:07 EDST, and I'm running outta patience with the trolls already!
The American President
From the article above.
President Obama: Great President, Great Husband, Great Father, Man of the People working his tail off everyday for the hard-working Middle Class.
Tea Party Republicans - House of Representatives Obstucting our lives, Oppressing the Middle Class, only caring about the wealthy.
That's is the difference between the two.
FORWARD - NOT BACKWARD!
Salud.
You are correct Crusader, this will be the cornation of their messiah(media).
You are also right Facist their speeches arent better!
Shiny, I've changed channels to Fox Business News at the conclusion of the speeches and THEY'RE even positive.
BTW, why is this on Fox's second string network? Couldn't break away from their usual programming with the pinhead hosts?
Antie Fascist, Chuck Todd is a Progressive. Do you really think he would seriously criticize what he promotes on a daily basis?
And conservatives don't have a similar problem?
A good speech makes the audience feel good. Good policy makes the economy good.
Good policy only makes the economy good when it gets past Congress.
Outstanding.
Obama 2012
JT & Brian, what have you done lately that is meaningful. Or, is everything you do filled with spite? I would guess that Barack Obama (& Michelle) did more good in any one day in the last 10-15 years than you could even imagine doing. President Obama has been serving this country and those who need a voice for a lot longer than his presidential term. Here is an example of what JT calls "light on action:"
Name ONE thing they have done? You are exacly the same, all words. SAYING you do good things does not = DOING good things.
JT, if you had a kid with a chronic medical condition, you might feel differently. Assuming, of course, that you CAN feel!!
It's called get a JOB and take care of your family by WORKING! There are lots of jobs out there for people who want to WORK.
JT, I HAVE a job! My kid was previously covered under my insurance until she was 22. Now, she's covered under my insurance until she's 26 and she can't be denied coverage for her pre-existing condition.
Work? When my kid's through (she's 16 now), she'll have one helluva job! Even then, she couldn't get her condition covered.
BTW, lots of jobs these days don't have health coverage. You judgemental, arrogant SOB!!!
Have you watched the news on FOx lately JT ?? They say theres no jobs out there but you dispute that do you ?? Idiots keep saying GET A JOB where the hell are they. I have two grand daughters that woul even work at a fast food place but they aren't hiring Have a college graduate that can't find a job so he has gone back to college for his Masters. GET A JOB you show how stupid you are. 11
After 3 months of searching for a job after acquiring an A.S. degree in I.T., I'm back at school working on my Bachelors.... I found job listings, and only got one interview from a company that was preparing to hire in the near future. Most jobs require 2-3 years experience, even if labeled entry level or internship.
I was contacted by recruiters who seem to not bother actually reading a resume as opposed to having software flagging a keyword in the resume. I've been offered jobs by over seas companies that seemed suspicious. I'm not saying that there are no job openings in America, I'm just simply saying it's not as easy as you would like to make it seem.
I'm sorry, but I'm not going to pay off student loans working at McDonalds or Starbucks.
I don't blame Obama for the lack of jobs, I blame greedy corporations that have to answer to ever more demanding stockholders. Business learned to demand more of their workers and offer less pay, because of the job situation. I also blame the obstructionists in D.C. that have signed on to Norquist's list and have declared they will make Obama a one termer. The same party that played with fiscal fire and got our rating reduced from AAA....
Sounds like Muslim propaganda to me.
Michelle - her message = if one person suffers or fails then we all must be miserable until we turn over tax money and help that person via wasteful Big Govt solutions. She may as well have said;
"Ask not what you can do for yourself. Ask what your Government can do for you!"
http://www.youtube.com/embed/QXEoQJ7ZMZs
You completely missed the point, intentionally i'll wager. There was very little about government policy in her speech and it was about that spirit in humanity that causes us to care for our fellow man because we are social creatures. Some of our deepest instincts are the drive to connect with other humans and form lasting bonds of affection and fellowship with our fellow man. Her message was one of family and shared responsibility outside of the sphere of government, and it is sad that everyone isn't able to connect with that type of message...
Wow, Mark...your listening comprehension is staggering. Not even CLOSE...
MIchelle did a good job for her husband. I would expect no less from her or Ann. Bottom Line: MIchelle, nor Ann, are running for President. End Analysis = irrelevant. Run on the record. Run on the issue and specific on what you intend to do. I've said it before 4 years to audition to conclude incomplete does not cut it. It applies universally to the position of President. That is why you have the power of the vote. Make a mistake on the Presidency then vote on Congressional or Senate seats. We the people need to tune out the rhetoric and noise and demand that both sides argue the issues. Sound bites need to go away. Once we stop accepting it, politicians will stop pandering.
Things will start to really get interesting in the debates. I hope this country tunes in on the debates and thinks for themselves about which candidate understands where we've been and where we need to go. I hope we can all see through the wise cracks and jokes and listen to the content of what is spoken.
The debates are where we'll be able to separate the wheat from the chaff. If Romney continues to sidestep questions about providing details for his policies, I expect to see Obama's poll numbers jump significantly among independent voters.
Romney has a 160-page plan for Jobs and Economic Growth, complete with the details you're looking for. During the debate he just needs to pick a few of his points and share what his plan is. The rest of us (myself included) should take the time to read his and Obama's plans.
Doesn't take much to 'wow' some people. She (and Osama) are the poster kids for racial profiling! mwhahahaha
Oh and don't bother to flame me.
Number 1: I couldn't care less.
Number 2: I doubt I'll even look at this again.
Sure, that's why you mention it.
Many of the derogatory posts are baseless and are signs of ignorance, but more importantly indicate that this country we call the United States of America is still living in times of Jim Crow despite the election of President Obama. The depictions of the President and his family, are out of the infamous movie "Birth of A Nation" and we call ourselves a religious nation. Maybe in theory only but not in application because the Republican Religious leaders are some that are leading these despicable assaults.
Barack Obama:
Alias Barry Soetoro pawns himself as Barack Obama, the humanitarian, the POTUS, the campaign for hope and change. But we know better. Barry is a radical Marxist who was raised by Communist parents and Communist grandparents. His mentors were known Communists, his contacts in college were strictly Marxists supporters, Marxist professors and a group of Pakistani activists as stated in his book, "Dreams From My Father".
Barack Obama, tell us about Frank Marshall Davis or Bill Ayers. Surely you remember Mr. Davis. After all, your mother knew him all too well. Mr. Ayers, a known terrorist, responsible for at least a dozen bombings, helped your early Illinois campaign by raising money, thru his organization Underground Weather. Tell us about your trip to Pakistan ('81) with Pakistani Wahid Hamid.
Share with us your ideals of socialism, after all you're a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), referred as the "New Party". Please tell us why you have been influenced by the writings of Karl Marx, the prelude to Communism. Share with us your association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Do you justify this man's message by condemning our country by saying, "God bless America? No, God Damn America"? Was this a forethought supporting your belief in Marxism?
United States of America………………you didn't build it Barack Obama.
If the GOP had nominated a real candidate, rather than a Norquist puppet, it would almost have been worth voting for that person, just so I wouldn't have to listen to four more years of whining conspiracy theorists.
Wait - now his GRANDPARENTS were Communists, too? You mean the same grandfather who fought in the U.S. Army in WWII? Wow! Thanks for that enlightenment...
Could you be more of a dolt?
I agree.
The analogy I heard is that these conspiracy theorist are talking to the "empty chair Obama". It's the imaginary President THEY have created BY the Conservative Television Media and the Shock Radio Media.
They are TOLD to HATE this "empty chair" President, because he is a Democrat, and because they will NEVER believe a DEMOCRAT President is GOOD for America.
Salud.
He wasn't talking to an empty chair actually !! Poor old man he was talking to himself I feel sorry for him.
TopDrum
United States of America………………you didn't build it either!
Get a grip, Top Drum. I hope you are living in a surpervised environment.
Gee, so predictable...you just knew LIB TARD nation would be gushing over Michelle Obama's speech last night. No surprise there. Also, no surprise in what she said either....same old "retread" theme just trying to pump up the faithful to get "Barry and the choom gang" back in office. We know you are nice people. The problem I have is that your husband is a "Sh&%y president. Where's the plan to fix the mess that you have made worse for the last 4 years?Constant personal attacks and attacks on the opposition's plan is not a plan. Sorry folks it was a lovely speech but quite frankly all of us are not that dumb.
Made worse?? The American auto industry could have all but disappear on the GOP watch, we were losing thousands of jobs a day, etc. At least now there are job gains, not enough, but some. The only thing the R/R offers is the same ideas that got us into this mess. Apparently you are one of the dumb ones that elected the TP losers to ride in and save the day. How are their jobs working for you? They voted down the Infrastructure Bill and the Small Business bill, but did bring up a whole lot of anti-women bills. We would have had more jobs but God Forbid they help America heal and help the President look good.
You just keep swiggin the kool aid "that stoner from Hawaii (as he was known at Occidental) and the media keep feeding you. I can't help it if you are brainwashed...that's your problem.....HA HA HA.
Unfortunately for people like you, I can see what happens and learn from history. I have a mind and use it. Where is R/R's plan? Not much in it except 12 million magically jobs to be created. I thought gov't didn't create jobs? I think you have been sucking down the kool-aid for a while.
Mrs. Obama succeeded where Ann Romney failed. Mrs. Obama's speech felt sincere and heartfelt. I had tears in my eyes. I just listened to it, I didn't watch it, but I was very moved. Maybe if I had heard Mrs. Romney's speech instead of watched her I would feel differently. I felt like the Obama's knew where I was coming from and what I have and will have to face as a parent. Both love their husbands, but I think Michelle Obama loves what her country can do for it's people more, opportunities not hand outs. I think she also has more of a pulse on what the middle class is dealing with as a whole. Fabulous speech, great message, and she has my vote ;)
Alright, her speach last night was okay. It wasn't bad, but I don't need to hear the same stories of 2008 about her and Obama.
She didn't convince many people last night who actually follow politics. She did a good job at what she was supposed to say and do couldn't really lay out WHY Obama should be re-elected. Didn't really talk about the real issues. If her and Obama care so much about the middle class, then why is it shrinking? Why is the average middle class income shrinking by an average of 4 grand a year?
Again, she did what she was supposed to do and did good. But she needs to really be touting Obama's accomplishments and moving Forward.
What you NEED is a basic English class.
i disagree that she didn't lay out why President Obama should be reelected. She highlighted the accomplishments of the President, ACA, DADT repeal, fair pay act and explained why those types of things are so importatnt to Mr. Obama. She reaffirmed what many of those who voted for the president in 2008 felt, and countered the notion that her husband hasn't been working hard or had allowed washington to change his values.
I thought she made a compelling argument for why this country needs to re-elect her husband.
Thank you Shellie for the tip! lol
I notice you didn't rebutt anything that was written and I can understand why. After Mrs. Obama gave her speech and you felt moved, did you come back to reality of how OUR econcomy still SUCKS?
