President Barack Obama, center, meets with local residents during his tour of the Bridgewood neighborhood in LaPlace, La., in Saint John the Baptist Parish, as he tours the area to survey the ongoing response and recovery efforts to Hurricane Isaac on Monday.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – At the end of a four-day trip filled with campaign events, President Barack Obama put politics aside to visit a Louisiana town hit by Hurricane Isaac and talk with local officials about the recovery effort.
In brief remarks after touring part of the town of LaPlace in St. John the Baptist Parish, the president said he was impressed by the resiliency of the residents.
“There is enormous faith here, enormous strength here you can see it in these families,” he said. “They were just devastated a few days ago and they're already smiling and laughing,” he said.
Residents struggle with the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac, which has left behind feet of standing water. In Louisiana, about 2,500 people are still in shelters. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.
Local reports say St. John the Baptist Parish experienced up to 18 inches of floodwater from the hurricane, an unprecedented level of flooding for the parish, according to an administration official.
Before his tour of the neighborhood, the president was briefed by local parish officials about the situation in the area and noted that the biggest concern was helping those who had been displaced.
“Obviously, right now we’re still in recovery mode,” he said.
Obama was accompanied by Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who met him at the airport alongside a bipartisan group that included New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Sens. Mary Landrieu and David Vitter, Reps. Cedric Richmond and Jeff Landry and FEMA administrator Craig Fugate.
Thanking the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Obama subtly referred to the recovery efforts to mitigate the damage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 under former President George W. Bush, which were widely viewed as a failure.
“In the past we sometimes haven’t seen the kind of coordination needed for these kinds of disasters,” Obama said.
But he also emphasized that this type of natural disaster transcends political labels.
“When disasters like this happen we set aside whatever petty disagreements we might have,” Obama said. “Nobody’s a Democrat or a Republican.”
The president returns to Washington, D.C. on Monday evening. He heads Tuesday to Norfolk, Va. for a campaign event.

We the people have always set aside politics when disasters happen in the US. The first one that comes to mind is 911. Now lets help Louisiana and send them what they need to reconstruct their lives. I think each candidate should start with 5 million.
Now lets help Louisiana and send them what they need to reconstruct their lives
CC- You are the queen of Tea-baggers. Why would you ever want to give government handouts to people in need???
I have never before used an abbreviation that I otherwise loathe. But this time it is absolutely true and appropriate. Soooooooo (first time) LOL!
Where would New Orleans have been without that $14 billion in "socialist" government infrastructure?
You think if Paul Ryan were running the budget they'd have gotten it?
Ryan want to cut out the money to replace the weather satellites that predict hurricanes, too.
Oh well, I guess if you can't live through it anyway it's better not to see it coming, right?
Gosh, Isaac came and went 5 days ago.....Guess the president had more pressing matters. How was the golf game? Maybe a little fundraiser before you could fly by and check on the destruction in Louisiana and Mississippi? Weak, very weak.
Nice Job Mr President. Considering the last one "LOOKED AT IT" from Air Force One. Take note "everyone impacted by Isaac, NOT just Louisiana.... The teaparty and GOP does not believe in any govt support for you, including a natural disaster.... Unless, they can find a way to make money off it"
.
I'm sure the citizens of the area were happy to know that they were priority #48 to the Obama administration, far behind him trying to shore up his support on college campuses for the past 2 weeks. Mitt Romney had his party's convention to attend to and even with that still made it to the devastated area days before Obama. Shameful.
How about we be honest ItsAboutTime. Katrina made landfall Monday, August 29. Bush flew over the area Wednesday, August 31 and was on the ground making his first personal visit by Friday, Sept. 2nd...4 days after landfall. He again visited the area for a second time 9 days later. You know...if we're going to be honest.
Obama on the other hand prioritized his political campaign for a full week continuing his college tour before bothering to grace the area with his presence. And he's supposed to be the empathetic one? Ridiculous.
There was a mayor in Louisiana that complained that Romney's appearance was taking away from the rescue operations even though news reports made it clear that the rescue operations were winding down at the time.
Rescue operations in Katrina took over a week. There were no undamaged roads into New Orleans and took 3 days to cleared the debris and for engineers to inspect bridges to insure they were still safe.
Do people not understand that a category 4 Hurricane wipes out pretty much anything in it's path?
Mike in SA
so what that Bush flew over New Orleans? It was a nice photo op that helped no one.
Don't you remember the televised images of those who remained in New Orleans without water, food or shelter? Or the deaths of several citizens by thirst, exhaustion, and violence days after the storm itself had passed?
But you praise Bush for flying over New Orleans 2 days after Katrina on the way back from his vacation? PRIORITIES.
Bayllie must have a very limited memory about Katrina... I know most liberals do... all they remember is how the people there were without water and without food... and all that suffering...
Oh, do I sound heartless? You're damn right I do... and with reason...
Do any of you understand what states rights are all about? Liberals, looking to skewer any republican always fail to look at the democrats for what they do and don't do.
The democrat governor of Louisiana, Blanco failed to declare a state of emergency. She did it because she hated Bush, just like any good liberal would. She was the ONLY person that could have initiated the federal government to step in and help. Since she failed to make the declaration, the federal government was helpless... but do any of the liberals EVER look at that? No. It's way to easy to blame Bush, even though Bush had to call her and tell her she needed to declare a state of emergency.
By the time the state of emergency was declared, the damage had already been done. Liberals were furious at Bush... simply because their misguided anger was directed at the wrong person. Maybe we can call it ignorance of civics...
My point -- and I thought I was pretty clear about this -- was to keep people honest. You don't see me praising Bush, you see me stating fact. I was calling out ItsAboutTime for his/her dishonesty. Dishonesty that you seem to try to perpetuate. Bush flew over the area the day after the storm had passed and was personally visiting the area 3 days after the storm had past. Saying all Bush did was a fly over is a lie which BTW seems to be a way of life for most liberals. With the veracity you are showing here it's not surprising that the word is even in your screen name.
BTW, saying Obama wouldn't detour from his campus campaign tour for a whole week to visit the devastated area is also statement of fact.
Maybe you should read Brianb's message above yours before you start touting "fact".
Anybody read the Article about a Swamp Rats washing ashore in LA...now thats no way to speak about the president even if its true
Brianb-999431
"all that suffering" - we are not to remeber what happened to the people of New Orleans?????? That's too trivial for you? Holy crap
well, then you need to tell Mike in SA about this, Brianb. Make sure you point out to Mike in SA that he doesn't understand the rights of states and he needs to STFU about Obama, right Brianb? I will be waiting for you to point that out because I KNOW you are not a hypocrite....
Mike in SA
the point is Mike that you criticize Obama yet you fail to mention that Bush did not cut his 28 day VACATION before, during or after Katrina. He flew over FROM his vacation...how nice of him!
Deadvirgo -
Please don't insult the nutria.
Obama was accompanied by Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who met him at the airport alongside a bipartisan group
Looks like "Gunga Din" is sucking up to O to get some of them free Guvment handouts. That's not very Republican of him...LOL!!!
-
O&Joe 2012
how racist of you gt.
...i thought you were better than that
Keck - Haven't you noticed? Within the last few years, Democrats have gone back to their KKK roots.
It is now the Left that spouts the most foul bigotry like "Mexican Mormon Moron ... mormons an evil anti-christ cult. Pope's boy Rick the Dick Sanitarium ... catholic rapist pedophile priests ... pasty-faced white guy ..." and on ad nausium.
Lighten up Keckster, that's not racist. I was just stating that it's somewhat hypocritical for this GOP lackey, to be asking for government handouts.....
-
O&Joe 2012
Soooo....when Democrats want "entitlements" for people, that's "socialist".
But when Republicans want help from the government, it's racist to oppose them?
Man, what an upside-down worldview!
Kanine - You're quoting the religious RWNJ's, not the left. You people are so @!$%#ed up you can't even keep track of your own talking points anymore. Kinda like Mitt.
O&Joe 2012
Is this another christian rewrite of history for play-back in the BuyBull-Home-School classrooms?
It was just the last election cycle when the GOP was making hay out of elevating McCain by turning mormonism into the country's Laughingstock Cult to keep Romney out of the race and secure a win for McCain in the primaries. ALL MY 51 YEARS, mainstream christianity has done nothing but LAUGH at mormonism, calling it a cult, laughing at its Magic Underwear nonsense, disappearing golden plates, arranged child marriages, ALL of the crazy, whackadoo Joseph Smith crap... the list goes on.
And now you're trying to play this as a Democrat's Song?
What a cowardly position. You have a short, failing memory, punkin!
No wonder the GOP is collectively so angry and hateful these days. If you all had ANY values, you've clearly sold them off for a dime to the first snake oil salesman who came along: Mittens and his Magic Underwear. And now you're all really pissed off about the thought of being responsible for putting a whackadoo cultist in the White House under YOUR party symbol!!
Unbelievable
He met the President there and accompanied him because that is what the Governor of any state does when the President of the United States comes to his area.
And yes, he most likely asked for money, which is what the leader of any disaster-struck area does in an effort to get whatever he can for the people under his care.
What are you..... an idiot?
Where would New Orleans have been without that $14 billion in "socialist" government infrastructure?
You think if Paul Ryan were running the budget they'd have gotten it?
Ryan want to cut out the money to replace the weather satellites that predict hurricanes, too.
Oh well, I guess if you can't live through it anyway it's better not to see it coming, right?
Frogmorton!.....I really do believe you're late for your meds....and oh, don't forget to say your prayers, punkin!
Oh my! That isn't the Republican Way! I thought you guys said that was SOCIALISM and all the other EVIL crap you keep labeling Obama!
My goodness -- it's never a handout when a republican needs the money, is it...
You two-faced hypocrites.
LOL. The facts sure got under Spider's skin... no substance, just shrieking. Epic Fail!
Screm, under Jindal's care, seriously, Louisiana is #3 in the nation for infant mortality, quite a claim to fame there, 60% of live births in LA., are to single moms, 20% of the population has no health care of any kind, take care of his people, really. The state has a 6% income tax across the board, 4% state sales tax that at one time included all food items. St. Tammany Parish, has a 9.53% Sales tax (including state) but the parishes sales tax includes food and medicine, great state, schools are decrepit, and St. Tam is the richest parish in La. Jindal refused to expand medicaid, refused federal money to insure his People, great state, we escaped 2 years ago, lived there for 10 yrs. and that was enough. Jindal is a troll.
Obama 2012
Bobby Jindal is trying to fix the disaster caused by decades of corrupt Democrats who looted the state.
Jindal is popular and is doing a great job, which is why he is being attacked here.
Bobby Jindal will be a great addition to Romney's Cabinet. His education reforms are opposed by crooked greedy teacher unions, which is proof they are great ideas...
You are a total idiot! GT "whatever".
First it is Gangadin. It is low blow for Bobby Jindal even though, I support Obama. That word is somewhat equivalent to "N' word used for African Americans. Please refrain from using it.
Sure he is, he had a little ethics problem all his own, foundation he and his wife founded. remember Edward Edwards, ex. gov., finally got out of the fed. pen, bribery casino license sales, 5 Insurance commissioners have all ended up in the pokey. clean up La. not in this life time. Jindal is still a troll. Education reforms, seriously, I truly do not believe so, my son graduated from Mandeville High School and it was touted as one of the best in the state, he had to do a little catch up for UCF, in Orlando. How can any one be an asset when they refuse a basic right for the citizens of the state: medical care, I know, perfect for the romney's agenda, let those no never mind people go it alone, after all, they are just mooches and parasites, push old granny off the cliff with medicaid cuts. Jindal is a troll and republican tool.
Obama 2012
Screaminmimi, you missed the part about the RNC saying they would not loose this election to fact checkers, please don't confuse them with facts and logic. Gad, the very thought of a governor of a state meeting the president at the airport when he arrives or, asking for federal assistance to help recover from a disaster. He met the President at the airport because it wasn't the hurricane disaster he wanted financial help with, it was the RNC disaster. Jindal may be a republican but, despite that, the President still showed enough class not to invite him to an MRE dinner at a FEMA concentration camp.
GT
"Guvment" was not using racism? This coming from a group that claims the GOP uses "code". Give us break GT.
Sky Parrot
You are blaming Jindal for an education system that your son started in 12 years ago. Jindal after a long drawn out fight, managed to get reforms in place this year. Sorry, if your kid didn't get what he/she needed from school, but as a parent, until your voice means something to the public school system, you simply are going to get less education and results.
The biggest reason for private school success is parental involvement. When you are paying extra money to have your kid in school, you make certain your kid is not failing or just passed along. I've seen public schools pass kids over the parents protests.
screminmimi
or point fingers at the president in a disrepectful manner???....Don't give me this holier-than-thou Republican attitude. The Republicans could not care less about this president. They showed that perfectly on Jan. 20, 2009.
Skyparrot you are responsible for your sons education not Bobby Jindal. You are an excellant example why moonbats shouldn't be allowed to breed. I guess in your case it doesn't take a village to raise your kid it takes a whole state. Get a life and take care of your family the government didn't bang your wife and get her pregnant did they? have some responsibility obama bot. Get a job freeloader and quit looking for handouts. Bobby Jindal had to follow the great bull @!$%#er obama around to make sure he didn't, obama didn't promise @!$%# that Louisana couldn't deliver.
The Presidents visitation and remarks to the people of "LaPlace,La" are one of many reasons why He will be re-elected. He's a good caring man. Tries His damndest to do all His office can muster to help the welfare of His fellow man. Those who have obstructed His efforts shoud be ran out of office and caned within an inch of their lives!
well baylie, guess it's ok for the president to point a finger in a disrespectful manner? Why because he's the president? get over it.
peggy/florida
are you serious? YES! A president deserves more respect than the Ignorant Brewer. What Brewer did disrespectful and shown all around the world. Jan Brewer is a complete a-hole. Get over it.
Great job, Brownie! - G. Dumbya Bush, Moron in Chief
Still blaming Bush for Obamas failures ?
Hardon - We must put the blame where the blame is do. Facts, and only facts, point that out.....
-
O&Joe 2012
K.Harson
Since when is what happened after Katrina Obama's fault? The FAILED coordination of help after Katrina IS Bush's fault!
actually no bayllie, it was the fault of the local and state government!
peggy/florida
Them too but what does FEMA stand for...hmm I wonder if F stands for flocal or fstate...
The federal government ALWAYS gets involved with major disasters.
I also wonder why Bush couldn't cut short his 28 day ranch vacation knowing that Katrina was on the way and even after Katrina hit so go blow smoke up someone else's butt.
There is a common thread here - Bush on a month vacation before 9/11 (even though warnings of terrorists planning to fly into buildings came in as early as August) and Bush on a month vacation before, during and after Katrina....
"Discuss" the recovery ... Yeah right - if he follows the same plan as his sorry performance during the Gulf oil spill, he will ignore them for two months then just send in lawyers to figure out who to sue.
I see you took time off as Mayor of Smallpenis, Wyoming, to drop in and blame Obama for BP's screw-up, too?
Anything else? LMFAO!
You people, with your new Magic Underwear Mormon Cultist "leader" -- you've sold your values for a dime, and you don't know which end is up. None of you know whether to laugh or cry, but you're so pissed, you'll kick your dog every time you see it. Amazing...
Frogmorton - I appreciate it when you attack me, rather than my arguments. It is your clear admission that my post is entirely accurate, and that you have no valid counter to any part of it.
That's because you didn't propose an argument - you dropped in and tried blaming Obama's for BP's screw-up (which is what I pointed out) -- like the you people try blaming Obama for the Bush Recession.
Nothing new here, just the same old cowardly hit-and-run nonsense with no substance -- typically where you can't man-up and own your crap.
Frogmorton "no substance" ?? I can't believe you don't remember what happened!
Immediately after Deepwater Horizon explosion, a competent president immediately would have made government-to-government requests for every single oil skimmer ship in the entire world to head for the Gulf of Mexico and start orbiting the blowout. This would have prevented any spread of the oil beyond the immediate area.
By contrast, Obama dithered for 60 days, allowing the oil to spread throughout the Gulf, and creating a serious environmental disaster. Even then, all he did was assemble lawyers to sue BP.
He allowed BP to inject dispersant chemicals into the underwater plume, keeping it in the water and adding even more pollutants. Essentially, he allowed them to try to hide the oil in an ecologically sensitive environment. Even so a portion of the oil surfaced where the slick could be seen clearly in multi-spectral LandSat images.
Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help. They have both experience and plans for combating such accidents. It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands...
“the embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘thanks, but no thanks,’” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston...
I wonder if Obama wanted an environmental disaster to justify more draconian powers for the EPA ...
It took Bush 3 days to get federal support to a disaster area; it took Obama two months.
No punkin, on many accounts.
A competent President would have consulted with his experts first on how to handle this situation. Which Obama did. Ed Overton, who heads the federal chemical hazard assessment team for oil spills, informed the President that even though most of the oil drilled off Louisiana is a lighter crude, the leaking oil was of a heavier blend which contained asphalt-like substances. This type of oil emulsifies well. (You might want to look up what EMULSIFIES means, punkin -- that's a big word for you! Once you look it up, then you can come back and screech about how you already knew what it meant...) Once it becomes emulsified, it no longer evaporates as quickly as regular oil, does not rinse off as easily, cannot be eaten by microbes as easily, and does not burn as well. That type of mixture essentially removes all the best oil clean-up weapons. Today, most of the oil from the explosion/leak (probably 80% of the volume that escaped) is still unaccounted for, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN where your skimmers would never have reached it.
Even tho BP was honest about this type of crude, the type that is almost impossible to recover in an emergency clean-up, BP was also low-balling the extent of the leak, as they later admitted in court. that hampers anyone in making any kind of spot-on decision. But, BP (one of your Big Oil butt-buddies) ended up paying for their deception and their negligence.
Kannin - I'm curious - since you're pissed-off about being forced to support a mormon cultist, does venting like this make you feel better? I guess you have to resort to something, after licking Bush's butt for 8 years only to see him destroy this country like nobody ever has before! And then, having to continue to lie to make him look good and to make it seem like you couldn't have made THAT big of a mistake supporting a lowlife like Dumbya Bush.
And yes, please, continue with the humor -- please try and make Bush look good regarding the Katrina response. 3 days, huh? Not bad, considering he had forewarning (we know about hurricanes in advance), and on top of all that, he sent a Horse Breeder to take care of the problem. Boy-o-boy, THAT sure worked well!
Frog -
No, it is you who flagrantly denies what happened.
The Obama administration even went so far as to first allow levees to be put in place to protect the marshlands and a week later removed the permissions to do so. Every time the state tried to 'revise' the plan to something they had been told would be acceptable, permission was again denied.
I live in the New Orleans area and have seen the impact to shrimping, fishing, and oystering. The area still hasn't recovered! In fact, university studies have shown that the seafood in the area is still contaminated by both the oil and the dispersant chemicals. Studies of the bed of the gulf show areas that are still covered in the toxic sludge.
There is no way in ___— that the Obama administration is not at fault for the lack of a federal response to the emergency. I only wish that the feds were not immune from a lawsuit because of it, but what do you expect from lawyers?
That one event alone brought unemployment in the Gulf region up by about a percentage point and the gulf region still has not recovered from that either.
The leftward drift of Newsvine is accelerating due to its "comment collapsed" mechanism. Left wing posters are in the majority, and "collapse" perfectly reasonable posts, such as this one:

NBC has a left-wing bias. Consequently, the majority of posters here are liberal Democrats. If there is a post that supports a conservative viewpoint and is irrefutable, it makes them uncomfortable. Because it makes them uncomfortable, they vote to hide it. Because they are in the majority, it gets hidden.
If you go to a site with a right-wing bias, that doesn't happen, but there is less opportunity for countering opposing points of view. That's why I hang out here.

BP hid the amount of oil coming from the blowout. But you know this, you have been told many times this is a BS claim.
BP, lied big time about the amount gushing in the gulf, and the President made the boogers pony up $60 billion remember that. Sill fox howler.
Obama 2012
Huuuuuh ?
Meanwhile back in the REAL WORLD and at a White House Press conference, Mr. CARNEY (Canary) stated that "the Republicans would block any aid going to the disaster area".
Now my Progressive friends, Mr. Obama said "this type of natural disaster transcends political labels" yet Mr. "surrogate" Canary throws out another arrow for this aministration to defend.
Yep, Mr. Obama's surrogates are right on track with Mr. Obama. NOT !!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the BP comments: those "oil plumes", which were NOT contained, continue to wallow below the Gulf. It is going to be a matter of time before the plumes rise and reek havoc on those sandy beaches BP has been raving about in the ads.
Romney-Ryan 2012 to take back America from the Progessives and the Radicals.
Ryan also wants to scale down FEMA.
This VP candidate believes that individual U.S. communities should be totally financially responsible for "digging their way out" of natural disasters. He believes that the federal government should not play a major role in helping the people and the communities that are harmed by natural disasters.
Ryan's positions are unrealistic, detached and callous.
Obama/Biden 2012!
Ryan is a Rand disciple, what would you expect?
recovery. just like in Joplin right Mr. president? did this visit go like yours to joplin where all of us volunteers had to leave the detroyed areas of town halting all search and rescue operations and cleanup so you could pose for a photo op with a chainsaw in your hand that you dont even know how to start?
Ryan does walk in Ayn Rand's footsteps.
However, the more people know about his harsh indifference, the easier it will be for voters to vote for Obama/Biden, so that Paulie will not end up as our vice president.
I remember that when President Obama forced BP to to put up that $60 billion, how the Republicans cried about the President making an innocent corporation actually put up restoration money.
Actually BP was plenty happy to have the government take over the administering of the plan. $60 billion was far less than what BP thought the cost would be. BP had moved to sell over $100 billion in assets and had secured another $200 million in credit lines. They unloaded the costs to administer the money, and got away from taking heat for distribution issues.
The question is was that a good deal for the people.
When BP was sending claim check in just a matter of a few days to a few weeks, the government to weeks to months to process claims. The government's delay in claims bankrupted many small businesses. The government would deny claims that BP simply would have paid. Yeah, some were not legitimate, but many were.
I guess that's why Obama skipped Louisiana until Romney showed up 4 freaking days ago.. Obama lost Louisiana by 30% in 2008 and knows there is nothing for him here. Hence, the lip service.
if the author doesn't think this trip was political she should be disqualified from calling her musing's objective.
Why isn't MSNBC reporting about a top Democrat in California who compared Paul Ryan to a Nazi?
IS OBAMA GOING TO DISTANCE HIMSELF FROM THESE OUTRAGEOUS REMARKS?
Hmmm...?
You know the Democrats have lost the argument when they're starting to make Nazi comparisons...
Rather than talking about "storm recovery" how about we talk about "economic recovery"? Oh that's right - Obama can't........
BTW, have you heard the latest Democrat slogan:
"You are better off, you just don't know it"
Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.
Median Household Income down 8% since Jan. 2009.
Unemployment rate up from 7.3% to 8.3%.
Pell Grants doubled since Jan 2009
Food Stamps doubled since jan 2009.
Federal Debt up $6 Trillion since Jan 2009
American sovereign debt downgraded for the first time in history.
The Dems say we are better off. They are peeing on your leg, telling you it is raining.
Kan, it took three days for w to fly over New Orleans and the 9th ward, it took 5 days for any type of FEMA help, I know I lived through it in Covington, LA, so don't even go there you haven't a clue what your talking about. You remember the super dome with all those people marooned there and the convention center? Took General Honore to straighten out the feds. and the mess on the ground, he and the Guard saved countless lives and all w did was pat another horse trainer and tell him "heck of job brownie." Your full of elephant dung.
Obama 2012
Yes -- after reading a few of her posts, the rest of us have come to that same conclusion, too.
I know people who were in NOLA when Katrina hit. Kannin has no idea how lousy a job Dumbya and Brownie did. Her yakking is just partisan hackery and nonsense.
Hey skyparrot, what took Obama so long to reach you guys down in LA? If it took Bush that long, you Dems would have been crying and wailing that Bush didn't care. You guys are hypocrites, just like the MSM, who would have been reporting that Bush didn't care and look how long it took him to get down there. As an independent, I find more hypocrites from the Dems than GOP, not that the GOP doesn't have hypocrites, but you guys take the cake by a 5:1 margin.

according to Newsvine policy, collapse has to do with No value - meaning unrelated to the topic (probably should be removed because it now seems to mean if I disagree with you), a viner verbally abusing another viner (name calling, Put-downs, personal attacks, etc), advertising (buy this product or service - happens), Ignore Author (probably should be removed, because it is now being used to sensor content rather than turn off factless or unsupportable opinions.)

ummm...last time i tried to find a right-wing blog site (such as at Fox?) sixteen search engines could not locate one. who is hiding what from their own kind (such as Kannin) and why? the question is rhetorical, so no need to answer. however, unlike at those sites which may exist (as yet undiscovered by me,) kindly notice that every single "hidden" post on THIS site can be UN-hidden with a click of your mouse button, rather than deleted by a partisan forum-monitor. you do know how to click on yer ole mouse button, there, don't ya' bucky?
You have now made my ignore list. Repeating posts doe's not make them true.
Louisiana - The President just told you "You're on your own!"
Let's also remember that the US reponse on the BP oil spill was predicated on the the estimates and information supplied to the Government by BP. Recall that BP first claimed the leak was 1,000 barrels a day with the leak point about 26 miles off shore and roughly a mile underwater. This information and the reassurances provided to the Gov't by BP seem to indicate there was time to figure out what to do.
"BP officials, even after the oil leak was confirmed by using remote-controlled robots, expressed confidence that the leak was slow enough, and steps taken out in the Gulf of Mexico aggressive enough, that the oil would never reach the coast." (source: http ://www .nytimes.com/2010/05/01/us/01gulf.html?pagewanted=all )
It wasn't until over two weeks later that BP said, (sic) "maybe as much as 5,000 barrels a day" and not until MUCH later that it was determined (and BP admitted) the leak was over 60,000 barrels (over 2.5 million gallons) a day. With inaccurate information being relayed by the "industry experts" and the efforts to cover up the real extent of the issue while trying to dump responsibility on anyone else, it's no wonder the federal response was somewhat spastic.
Oh, and the sand bars? Ask Gov. Jindal about those. They seemed to have mostly washed away and didn't work . . something about wave and tidal action on loose soil . . .
With respect to your comment on "I wonder if (President) Obama wanted an environmental disaster to justify more draconian powers for the EPA ...", it's clear that you've already established a personal opinion on what the EPA does and how it does it. Your use of the word "more" in your wondering indicates you reject the need for businesses to follow existing laws, rules, and regulations that are critical to clean air, clean water, and our health. Then to add to that the idea that the President would want an environmental disaster is tin-hat worthy and beneath you.
Why are Kannin's posts collapsing?
Because she keeps telling lies, and it pisses people off, so they tag the posts for being dishonest.
why? because kannin is a potty-mouth puke with no intelligence. some people would rather not have that kind of filth show up on their screens. it's just that simple. but feel free to UNhide kannin's posts anytime your lil ole heart desires, if that's your choice of reading material.
Do you have any proof, KH?
Oh, you're a republican. Of course you have no proof - just knee-jerk allegations, finger-pointing and whining.
Another, you do know that IP address change for most people, most of the time daily. So logging IP addresses will really do nobody any good.
Sheryn -
You just earned being put on my ignore list. Continued inflammatory attacks on an individual is normally what does it for me.
If you cannot argue without calling names, you evidently have no argument to what they say, but merely disagree. While you have the right to disagree and to voice the disagreement, you are violating the Code of Honor that you checked agreement to when you started your account by calling names.
And, you know what? I really don't care what you think of me. That's why I put you on ignore - I won't have to put up with your childish name-calling.
A lot of typical Democrats here this evening, trying to gag free speech when someone tries to post something that shows up left-wing hypocrisy.
Article states he is "talking about" storm recovery, well the A$$hole talks all the time about the economy "recovering" and look where it's at. I'm glad I work for a living and don't have to depend on this jerk for anything and I pity you folks that do!
Ct, what do you want the President to say to the people of Louisiana, talk about, oil and gas royalties, or bp pollution. Are you serious, the President declared La. a disaster area, and FEMA is on the ground along with the Red Cross, jeez, the folks in South La. just went through a horror again, and your howling about what, calling the survivors of the hurricane moochers or parasites, because they don't what work? Wow.
Obama 2012
I'm sorry to say so, but those folks have to move. It's just no good trying to stay there, it's going to keep on happening and we can't put walls along the whole Louisiana coast.
I'm from Galveston folks, and I moved to Ohio. Higher ground is your only real option.
Mark you can't always run.
We have industry here that is crucial to America.
Oh, and I guess you didn't get warned about the Ohio River floods?
You cannot escape the Mother.
She will follow you wherever you go.
I've often wondered that myself. It cost 80 Billion to refortify after Katrina. What's next... It's going to keep happening year after year after year. Why live next to the ocean below sea level in Hurricane Alley?
Would anyone else keep rebuilding a city at the foot of a volcano that kept going off every few years, and kept burying the city?
Frog, you are absolutely right, at last half of the 9th ward has never been rebuilt, it looks like that series Life After People, there will be no rebuilding there. but those folks that hang on will never move, they'll hang until the bitter end. Its all they know, 70% of the people born in Louisiana never venture out of the state, pretty isolated and insulated.
Obama 2012
Hey Frog, your oil for your car or tree hugging bicycle comes from the Gulf of Mexico.
It takes people there to work those oil fields.
Wake up.
UM. VW -- NEWSFLASH. Many don't live below Sea Level in NOLA in order to work in those other areas.
WAKE UP yourself!
Hey Sky. I hear ya. For me -- no matter what I did for a living, after ONE, I'd pack up and grab the family and go. Once is all it takes.
Frog, husband retired from his Oil and Gas position, Well Control, part of RPC Corp., Elihu and Root, etc., any way we go out, it was a giant culture shock for me our boys adapted quite well, as kids will. I give your boys the utmost respect for being MD's in NOLA.
Obama 2012
Mark -
Are you going to move when Cincinnati gets inundated by its next blizzard?
New Orleans is a major port. Do you realize that most of the midwest is serviced by the traffic in and out of the port? Ships cannot get all that far up the Mississippi - not even as far as Baton Rouge. Where else could the ships dock?
Storms happen.
You pick up the pieces, repair the damage, go back to work, and get on with your life.
Liberals in Newsvine are scared stupid.
That's why comments by conservatives get collapsed here.
Obama did nothing more than make a quick show and leave, nothing more.
Obama has to hurry back to DC, he has a lot of packing to do.
The people who live in LA and South MS are not buying the bull anymore.
Jindal must have been biting his tongue during the entire thing.
It is ridiculous to have comments collapsed... asinine, beyond foolish.
When I come to a thread where there are collapsed comments, those are the first ones I read, and I'm sure I am not the only one to do this.
Forbidden fruit is always the tastiest. If you don't want us to read them you are going to have to completely delete them, and that makes you, Newsvine, guilty of rabid censorship.
In the 1930's, during Hitler's rise to power, he had his infamous “Brown-Shirts,” who would beat up and intimidate anyone who pointed out the dangers of Hitler's fanaticism. Newsvine has its own crop of modern Brown-Shirts trying to suppress any posts that disagree with their leader, Obama. Fortunately, their attempts to violate the First Amendment are a lot less painful.
Yes Mimi.
This is a "chicken vine".
Candice,
Because Kannin keeps saying the same old lies over and over. BP lied about amount of oil spilling is the reason for the timeline of disaster relief. Also MSNBC is overwhelmingly a progressive and liberal site. Maybe he should post on a site that matches his leanings.
trippeIII.
It doesn't matter - freedom of speech. No one right or left should be collapsed simply because one disagrees with their views. Such activity would be called "suppression."
Thank you for acknowledging MSNBC is overwhelmingly a liberal site. (Many think they are fair and balanced!)
If we speak only to those who agree with us, how will we ever expand our views?
Candice -- Maybe if you go back and read the lies in all of the collapsed posts, you'll see why people collapsed them!
And, by the way, the Freedom of Speech doctrine doesn't apply to privately owned websites. It's a nice idea, but the moderators who work for the people who own the site get to call the shots. that's called the FREE MARKET, not Free Speech.
ummm...last time i tried to find a right-wing blog site (such as at Fox?) sixteen search engines could not locate one. who is hiding what from their own kind (such as Kannin) and why? the question is rhetorical, so no need to answer. however, no-doubt unlike those sites which may exist (as yet undiscovered by me,) kindly notice that every single "hidden" post on THIS site can be UN-hidden with a click of your mouse button, rather than deleted by a partisan forum-monitor. you do know how to click on yer ole mouse button, there, don't ya' bucky?
{on a side-note: kannin is a GIRL?! coulda fooled me. and that ain't easy to do.}
Candice, this is not book burning or press smashing. It is probable that Kannin's collapsed posts receive more readership because they are. Note, his/her posts were not deleted. Christ, I've had lines of Shakespeare collapsed.
You liberals may not agree with me, but if you tolerate the unreasonable left-wing suppression of my free speech today, then it may very well be your rights that are trampled tomorrow.
K, Kannin is a liar and he/she does is regurgitate same old same old, challenge the post and one gets nothing but vitriolic verbiage. I personally do not know to collapse or delete a post, so it wasn't me. The best thing with Kannin is to ignore him/her until it gets too outrageous, then have at it. Kan, this is a private web site, your speech gets collapsed because they can. Stop posting here or suck it up.
Obama 2012
Kanin, quit crying like a baby. Anyone can still read your ranting by simply clicking on the box with an + in it.
Does anyone have a fresh pair of Depends for this tearjerker?
then quit whining and LEAVE. Criminy -- if you don't like it here, GTFO!
you're one of those types who complains and whines about what you see on TV, but you're too goddam lazy to change the channel!
While I agree with Frogmorton in this circumstance, he/she clearly needs to relax, as well as grow up a bit...
Okay! Then it's all good! Really? Even without electric for the past 5 days? Folks without homes. People in shelters.
"I want to commend everybody who's here for the excellent work they've done" said President Obama.
Good Lord. Is this a "Heckuva job, Brownie!" moment?
More than 100,000 utility customers on the Gulf Coast remained without power nearly a week after landfall, while about 2,800 were still in shelters because of flooding. Authorities are still dealing with threats posed by rain-swollen rivers and lakes -- particularly in St. Tammany Parish, northeast of New Orleans.
Authorities have blamed eight U.S. deaths on Isaac, six of them in Louisiana. The latest came Monday, when a 90-year-old man was found dead in his home in suburban New Orleans---because of the lack of electricity.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jesus h nipple, candice. He was only commenting on their spirit and attitude about moving forward toward recovery. what on earth is wrong with you?
Yeah, that's part of it, too. Two of my boys are MDs in NOLA. The first day back, there was still no power to the clinics. So they left after a half-day there, and went out with their chain saws in their truck, and were cutting fallen trees/branches out of roads and off of houses for people.
THAT is what he is talking about!
Grow up, for chrissakes!
Frog, kudos to your Boys, I am sure they remember Charity Hospital and the death and destruction, 5 days without electricity, try over 6 weeks in some places in New Orleans and on the North Shore, 6 weeks was nothing, and Candice is complaining that folks are without power for 5 days, really, wow, amazing.
Candice, question, have you ever endured a horror like Katrina or Rita or Ivan, please be a little more empathetic to those first responders.
Obama 2012
Candace -
I think there are nearly 100,000 customers still without power just in Jefferson Parish alone. The parish president wants Entergy - Louisiana fined by the the Public Utilities Commission because of the lack of response in just this parish. Entergy - Mississippi already has all of their customers back up as does Cleco where flooding is not involved as well.
Let's compare the Katrina reponse to the Issac response, seeing Obama brought it up. In Katrina, George W. Bush issued a national emergency declaration for the Gulf States region 2 days PRIOR to the storms landfall; Issac? Because Obama was campaigning on college campuses, he had to wait until 2 days AFTER that storms landfall to issues a similar national emergency order.
The liberal press had castigated George W. Bush for waiting THREE DAYS past Katriana's landfall to personnaly visit the Gulf States. Obama? He waited a FULL WEEK until the brunt of his college campaigning was over, including his trip to Ohio today. And not a word out of the liberal press about that delay. Guess he had to wait for the sun to come out to get his most favorable photo shoot in for the history books.
And about the business on how for Issac this time the government was ready with all the coordination necessary, that is surely an oversight on his part that might be because Louisiana's Republican Governor Bobby Jendal knew enough to as for the additional aide officially. While in Katrina, The Alabama and Mississippi Governors had made their formal requests, but the Democrat Governnor of Louisiana was apparently clueless, and had not made the formal request, until she was coached later on in the recovery effort on how to do that when it was obvious she never would have done it on her own initiative.
See the difference?
Apparently, you don't. Katrina was a disaster of Epic Proportions. It flattened that city, causing damage that reached into 80 Billion Dollars, killing almost 2000 people and devastating an entire region. Katrina was the costliest natural disaster in US History and was one of the five deadliest hurricanes in US History. It varied between a CAT 5 and a CAT 3 hurricane from FL over the Gulf to LA and beyond. 80% of th city was completely flooded and the floodwaters stayed for weeks and weeks.
Hurricane Isaac. CAT 1 at landfall but a tropical storm for landfall in LA, killed 5 in all of LA, 2 in FL, 2 in MS. None of the City's refortified levees gave out, the only people in danger were those outside of the City's levee protected areas who were warned to leave but chose to stay. Most of the students at Tulane U remained and none were reported endangered or injured.
The difference between Katrina and Isaac are so completely Epic, you should be embarrassed for trying to compare the two incidents. I was on the phone with my boys, who are both in NOLA, living right down by the hospital, and they were never in any danger.
Get real...
In Katrina, George W. Bush issued a national emergency declaration for the Gulf States region 2 days PRIOR to the storms landfall; Issac?
Keith -
During Katrina , when the national emergency declaration was made, wasn't the problem. The problem was the incompetent leadership within FEMA itself to respond with any effect. "W" based the hiring of the head of FEMA on the "Good ole boy system", opposed to hiring based on qualifications. This is a fact. The head of FEMA left in disgrace....

O&Joe 2012
Any reader here who is still “undecided” - Please note the typical Democrat reaction of gagging anyone who dares to disagree with them, and ask yourself: Are these the people I want running my country?
The collapsing MIGHT cease when the children go to bed.
They have school tomorrow.
You were not gagged, you were collapsed. I opened them and read them. I have often been collapsed as have many on either side. Grow up.
Like I said,
AND got collapsed.
Liberals are scared stupid.
I agree, with a twist. Liberals are stupid and scared.
Obama ca't even get the economy on the path to recovery. Hopefully, He can handle the situation in the south.
I doubt it.
You can see the desperation of the Left in their unhinged comments...crazy even by their moonbatty standards...
Most national polls show a tie now...and the swing states are swinging to Romney Ryan...
then why are you here ragging on people. go enjoy yourself and have a drink! You are convinced that your mormon cultist, who you've sold your own values to support, is going to win.
why sit here and whine at other people like a child?
