CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mitt Romney would be elected president if the election were held today, the Republican National Committee's chairman boldly predicted Monday.
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus predicted a Romney victory based on projected wins in several swing states (polls of which are less definitively optimistic for Romney).
"I feel real good that if the election was held today, we’d be winning today. If the election is tied, we’re going to win the election," Priebus said during a press conference today kicking off the GOP’s "rapid response" effort during the Democratic National Convention.
"Independents are not going to suddenly have an epiphany," Priebus continued, "and decide that everything is great."
Pressed by a reporter on which states Romney would win if the election were held today, Priebus doubled down.
"For one, I think we win Wisconsin today," Priebus said of his home state, adding: "I think we win Florida today. I think we win Virginia. I think that we win Iowa."
Priebus said Romney would be close in Ohio, a state he called a "toss-up."
Yet demonstrating the GOP’s not-so easy electoral map in November, Romney winning Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, and Iowa would still leave him short of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, especially if Romney doesn’t carry Ohio.
The GOP will hold press conferences several times daily this week, inside a television studio nestled in the basement of Charlotte’s NASCAR museum.
"Today, the thrill and pixie dust of Barack Obama’s presidency is gone. Americans feel no hope, and have seen a change for the worst," Priebus told reporters. "Democrats are dispirited. Enthusiasm is clearly on the Republican side."
Priebus was joined today by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT). Other officials slated to participate in the GOP effort here include Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

Well if Preibus is so sure of Romney winning then i guess Romney should have no problem showing his tax returns? Maybe he can explain to the American people why he had those computer hard drives destroyed when he left office after his Governorship?

Yes, doctors that are in it just for the big money will have to what? find new career? Become maybe a teacher making 33,000 a year? Laughable. Where are all these doctors going to go now that they arent making the outrageous moola anymore? What a shame, not being able to charge $600 for an appt to draw blood to a well insured patient anymore. Sorry dont feel bad at all.

as a country we are better off than we were four years ago. four years ago the country was headed over a cliff and no one could see bottom. the stock market crashed real estaqte crashed unemployment was headed for 13%.
now unemployment is at 8% the stock market is way up and we have had almost two and a half years of economic growth. we are only about halfway out of this hole but are we better off than we were four years ago

Obama's only failure in the past four years was trying to be-friend congressional republicans. As Mitch McConnell put it "Our job is to make Obama a one term president" To McConnell and the rest of the lame-brain right wing, your job is to serve the American people! But then again, republicans haven't adhered to that prospect since the Eisenhower was in office!

Looks like all the liberal idiots are at it again. According to all the polls, which about all are 10-15 points leaning demorcrat, have Obama and Romney about even. I'm sure on election day enough illegal aliens, dead people, dogs, cats, and cartoon characters will vote in mass for Obama to insure his victory. If I wanted to live in a socialist country I would have moved to China. Obama is doing a great job increasing the welfare rolls, increased from 30% to 47% on his watch. Let's tax the hell out of small business and the rich and see if we can't double his pace towards the nany state. That is his plan. Vote for Obama so you can stay home, smoke pot, and sit on the couch all day. Let some other poor shleb pay for your exsistance. Sounds like fun.
Reince Priebus's belief that Romney would win an election held now falls somewhere between whistling in the dark and demented fantasy. (Check the numbers at fivethirtyeight for a better-informed view.) I wish him well, though - as a Democrat, I can hardly name anyone I'd rather see holding the RNC chair.

Mitt Romney continues to struggle with women's support. He had a golden opportunity to tell women voters CLEARLY that hew will never let the ultra-conservatives dictate what decisions women can or cannot make regarding their own bodies and health, and he blew it. Instead, he stood there and said he loved his mom...because she was a good wife to his dad. So, do all women have to be like Mr. Romney's mom to deserve his support? What about the millions of women who -by circumstances or by choice- are not like Mr. Romney's mom? Do they have their days numbered, if he's elected president?

Some members of my family that are life long GOP'ers , will not be voting there way come November. The one thing that changed there mind my 92 grandmother, there mother will not be able to vote because of new voter I.D. laws. She has never driven, never had a credit card. Nothing with her picture on it.
She has been voting for 72 years, and does not think she should have to pay to get a I.D. just to vote.
Funny how it took this to get there attention. It was the wake up call they needed I guess.
Your full of @!$%#. She must not have a bank account, address, or social security # either. She would need an ID to see the doctor or collect her socail security check to deposit in the bank. She could vote absentee and never leave the house. If she doesn't vote it's because she has lazy liberal fools for grand kids.
When you're one point down in the poll of the polls right after your convention, it's important to say something stupid like, "We could win - even today." But the important state polls (including Florida) spell big trouble for Romney. If Obama improves nationally by just a couple of points, the electoral college could be a route for the President. Romney is stoked by a small lead in North Carolina. If North Carolina is even close, Romney is still going to lose. It will be interesting to see how many idiots in the GOP House go down the political sewer (where they belong).
