In Charlotte, Democrats are poised to insist that their economic vision is better for America than that outlined by Mitt Romney; they insist the country is better off than it was four years ago. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.
DETROIT -- Amid a GOP-driven effort asking whether Americans are better off than they were four years ago, Vice President Joe Biden emphatically declared that "America is better off" now than at the end of the Bush administration.
"Folks, let me say something to you, say it to the press," Biden said at the conclusion of his remarks at a Labor Day rally here in the Motor City. "America is better off today than they left us when they left!"
The question, a staple of elections in which an incumbent is seeking re-election, has developed into a small media imbroglio since surrogates for President Barack Obama appeared hesitant this weekend to give a positive answer.
Democratic Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley answered that question with a "no"; Obama advisers David Axelrod and David Plouffe offered nuanced responses but not a flat "yes."
Republicans pounced in the meanwhile, and the GOP held a press conference today in Charlotte, the site of the Democratic National Convention, to push that very question.
Biden's statement makes him the highest-ranking Obama surrogate to weigh in on the back and forth.
Repeating his frequent "bumper sticker" mantra, Biden said in Detroit: "If you want to know whether we're better off, I got a bumper sticker for you: Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive!"
Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said in response: "Today, Vice President Biden claimed that Americans are better off than they were four years ago, directly contradicting what President Obama and his campaign surrogates have said. The truth is that the middle class has been crushed in the Obama economy."
Biden, who spoke to several hundred supporters at the AFL-CIO-sponsored event, focused heavily on labor issues in his remarks and blasted Romney for opposing the Obama-backed bailout of the auto industry.
"Folks, you can't say you're going to create jobs in the United States of America when you were willing to let 1m jobs go under by the liquidation of the automobile plants he suggested," Biden said.
He also went after Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, repeating a line first debuted yesterday in Pennsylvania to attack the Wisconsin congressman's Medicare plans.
"We're talking about making sure to protect Medicare. They're talking about creating an entire new system, 'Vouchercare,'" he said, warning "if they win, people are in trouble."

For Joe Biden to take credit for the courageous
acts of other men, especially an act that
ultimately cost many of those men their lives,
is about as despicable as a man can get.
But, then again, Joe Biden is about as despicable
as a man can get. Biden and his handler not only
disowned the means by which the intel was gathered
to find bin Laden, they tried to close the facility
where bin Laden's location was uncovered.
Knowing that killing Bin Laden would make those
men a prized target, a wise Commander in Chief
would have immediately pulled them from harm's way,
instead Obama sacrificed them to the Taliban. Now,
Obama's clown waves the flag over their graves.
Proud, ain't they.
Watch Axelrod and a few of the dem govnors squirm when asked that question. Some are just as usual not answering just diverting to what it would be un Bush or Romney. Bush and Romney haven't been in office for the last four years. No wonder the Governors are reluctent to answer, they don't want to look like fools and say we are better off than 4 years ago.
Did you see how many Dems are not attending the DNC convention? They are distancing themselves from Obama. The writing is on the wall :)
NObama 2012! Save America!!!
We should believe what biden says is true? Really?? Wait, I have to tighten the chains so they don't get away.
Forget the chains and give Biden a "Straight Jacket" and a padded cell.
I am 74 years old and planned to retire nine years ago. However, under the Bush economy I lost more than half of my net worth, which was the bulk of my retirement income. I finally was able to retire this past month. My retirement accounts are back where they were when Bush took office for his second term in 2004.
I am indeed far better off than I was when Bush economics held sway. Bear in mind that when Obama took office in 2009 the Dow was at 6500 and threatened to sink even further; it is now above 13,000! Don't let Romney/Ryan pull the GOP wool over your eyes. Obama did not make the economy worse. He pulled us (me!) back from the brink of ruin, whereas Bush stole nine years of my retirement.
And try to recall that during the 2008 campaign when McCain tried to posture himself as the savior of the economy neither he nor the GOP was able to contribute one single economy-saving idea, it was Team Obama that saved us (me!) from complete ruin.
So you mismanaged your finances and it's Bush's fault.
Remember it is Obama that is leading us to complete ruin. You're 74, but our young people's great grandchildren will still be paying off Obama's debt!
Bear in mind that the Democrats took FULL CONTROL of Congress in 2008/2009, and had it for quite a while. THEY DID NOTHING GOOD, and hmmm, that's just about the time the debt starting to skyrocket, and the economy started to tank.
It sounds like you need someone else to blame rather than self responsibility!
Thomas, about 99% of the people who live in the real world do not care about your 401k or the dow. We live in a country that has $4 gas, doubled in the last 4 yrs. Food prices at an all time high. 3 million homeowners lost their home under Obama. 23 million without jobs.
Your democrat party CLAIMS to be the party of the poor and middle class. Your party has done nothing to help improve the living conditions of these people, your party has made everything worse.
We do not need a congress that works with the president, we need a leader that is willing to work with congress.
Thanks for setting the record straight. I guess the damage to our economy was due to the fiscal mismanagement of its' citizens.
But how do you respond to this:1) Under Bush 48% of this country's wealth was lost. 2) The bulk of this nation's debt was due to 2 unfunded wars and the elimination of critical regulations in the investment community. 3) In a depression/severe recession the only way out is for the Government to spend, by investing in the country infrastructure and helping failing businesses that are critical to our economy. How on earth do you think we got out of the Great Depression.
If you think this is false consult economist Paul Krugman.
There are still 23 million Americans out of work and millions more who are hurting. However, if Bush and the GOP had not scuttled Clinton's policies (which saw the Dow increase by 325%) we'd all be better off today, but if McCain and the GOP won the last presidential election we'd all be on bread lines.
Yes, Bush is responsible for 2 unfunded wars, unfunded Medicare part D, Bush Tax cuts and to forget it is to repeat the same mistake as we attempt to dig our way out of this hole. Important is that all our elected officials govern. How is it you gave Grover Norquist the ability to tell you and the GOP to pledge never raise taxes and to protect Corporations at all costs. Did you elect Grover Norquist and why did nearly all GOP members of Congress sign his pledge not to raise taxes. I thought we elected our officials? You didn't find governing a part of the GOP these 4 years. Mitch McConnell stated that his job was to make Obama a one term president instead of helping the American people. On inauguration day a special meeting with Newt, Frank Luntz, McCarthy, Ryan (yes Ryan) and other GOP Congressional leaders were plotting to not back Obama on any piece of legislation. These are elected officials that are being paid to represent the American people and you give them a pass.
gloriaCa
Excellent point. Isn't it amazing that as our debt rises Grover Norquist and his GOP supporters refuse to allow Congress to increase revenue. Recall that Clinton raised taxes to attack the debt and left office with a surplus. And what do all of those billionaires want from Team Romney (Adelson, Koch brothers, and according to Senator Bernie Sanders at least 21 + others are funding Team Romney). Would you guess that this Gang of 23+ wants tax breaks . . . leading to an increase in our national debt?
Maybe HE'S better off but my family certainly isn't. Idiot.
I'm 68 and my retirement is a lot worse than it was 4 years ago.
Sorry that your family is not doing well. Members of my family are also struggling, but we are able to provide food, shelter and clothing and an education to our children. Where would you/we be under McCain?
I hope you didn't have a 401K or a pension that suffered loses as a result of the financial crisis. Just think what would have happened had Social Security been privatized where you depended upon the market?
gloriaCa
Good question. And where would the seniors of this country be if the Ryan Medicare Voucher Plan were in effect? According to an independent tax policy impact study Ryan's plan will cost an additional $6400 at age 65 and $14,000 at 77. Even with our personal investments and Socilal Security my wife and I would not be able to afford medical insurance when we reached 77.
We'd be in a much better place. If only he didn't pick Palin, we'd know that as a fact. But as it is just speculation, and has NOTHING to do with the job Obama did, it's MOOT.
So let's stick with the facts. Obama has failed to make things better, and has made things worse. It really doesn't matter if he inherited a bad situation from Bush, what if's or coulda beens. He promised his policies would fix things, and they DIDN'T.
Just the facts. I know it hurts, but making excuses, and trying to pass blame or pretending what woulda, coulda, shoulda doesn't mean squat.
We are NOT better today then we were 4 years ago. We need change so we can restore hope.
wtfwws Your opinion that "We are NOT better today than we were 4 years ago." -is interesting, but false. We may not be where we we will be in four years, but there is hardly an economist who shares your view we aren't in a far better place that we were when Bush walked away from office four years ago.
God forbid that the supply-siders get to take the reins of our economy again. If we do not make any changes in economic policy the most conservative opinion is that we will generate 12 million more jobs in the next four years. Isn't it interesting that Romney promised he would create 12 million jobs, so I'd guess that he plans to continue with the policies that are making this recovery possible.
Incidentally, with McCain at the helm we'd be involved in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran, and God only know how many other wars. He repeated his jingoist threats in his frightening convention speech. What do you think more wars would have done . . . or will do to our economy? Let's not forget that McCain believes that he and Romney are on the same foreign-policy page.
Republicans say that we can't raise taxes on the rich because they are the job creators, or that regulations killing jobs. So first of all, do people like Trump and the Koch brothers actually create jobs? Secondly, if regulations are KILLING jobs, why have we had a monthly average of over 165,00 jobs created over the last 2 years? Who is creating these jobs? Not big businesses. Why don't big businesses create more jobs? NO DEMAND. Small business are creating these jobs. Why? Because they aren't afraid of regulations?? Wal-Mart is building more stores, creating jobs, is there a demand for retail?? I guess. Does any one know why other big business won't hire?? You know here in the Tampa Florida area, just about every 9 miles along just off US 19, here is a Wal-Mart store. There must be 20 with in a 20 mile radius. Why don't they give their employees better pay raises of bigger bonuses instead of building MORE stores.
Derf,
See if you can find any testimony by democrats or liberals, in just the last few years, that suggests raising taxes during a recession is not a good idea. If you do, and you report back to us, I'd love to hear how those views morphed, uhhh, cough, cough, that is, 'evolved' to it's not a good idea, unless it's on the super-rich.
So you know, we're not in the super-rich category. Not even in the ballpark, and I'm talking one the size of Yellowstone.
F&B666
This is a classic example of why Obama/Biden have to go. They are totally out of touch with reality.
They are so high on themselves, and don't really care about "us". They care more about their legacy and egos.
No we are not better off today, regardless of whom you want to blame, Bush or Obama, or Elmer Fudd.
The fact that the Obama administration continues to LIE, and cannot just admit this was more difficult than they thought, and that they were, OMG, wait for it, WRONG, tells me they have no clue what to do, so they have to duck and weave to avoid what they perceive as a negative opinion. Obama is not a strong leader, he is indecisive and, well, for lack of a better way to describe it, incompetent. He just doesn't have the experience to do the job. We tried, but it didn't work!
All he does is attack anyone who has a different idea, and of course, it's all Bush's fault, and it couldn't possibly be Obama's fault HIS PLANS DIDN'T WORK. Oh, don't remember all those promises he made on national TV that the stimulus would reduce unemployment, shovel ready jobs, he'll cut the debt in half, he'll work in a bi-partisan way, and the list goes on.
I know I'll get "well the Republicans are obstructing everything Obama tries to do". Well, he is not being bipartisan in his policy, and writing policy that everyone and their Uncle knows the Republicans will be against. If he would be a true LEADER he would be inclusive rather than divisive, the bills presented may have a better reception. I know it was just a promise to get elected, we couldn't possibly have expected Obama to keep his word, you know, that change and hope thing. Nice ad, no substance.
And of course instead of cutting the defecit in half, he added over 5 TRILLION to it. All after Bush was gone, and with a solid Democrat Congress, no Republicans needed. You cannot blame the Republicans or Bush for this, that is BS, and is childish to even try (IMHO).
While I don't particularly like the Republicans social agenda, there is no alternative. Obama/Biden will destroy the country further. While the liberals are stroking out trying to accept that Obama has failed, they refuse to let go of him, so as a result we will most likely have Romney as president.
So I say this not in support of Romney, but as a realistic assessment that Obama has failed and would be the worse choice for the US! NObama 2012! Save America!!!
You can take this personally, and attack away, I expect nothing less from some extremist liberals, but that is a non-attack, non-racist, not partisan assessment of how I see things.
PS: I'm not a tea-party, religious zealot, or conservative exteremist. I actually voted for Obama in 2008, but as much out of being against Palin, as for Obama's rhetoric. But I was optimistic after he won. Not so much anymore :)
The highest poverty rate in 50 years, the worst economic recovery in 70 years, 23 million unemployed, insurance premiums going thru the roof, highest longest running enery costs of any sitting president, food costs through the roof, hidden taxes popping up everywhere, I am much worse off than I was 4 years ago. Obama is running against Romney, NOT Bush. I do believe most liberal democrats have had lobotomeys.
110 MILLION Americans on government assistance last year. That's over 1/3 of our eligible workforce!
This is the change that Obama brought. He has destroyed the hopes of millions of Americans.
But it could have been worse. Except we won't ever know.
And if we stay the course, it will get better. Really? And if it doesn't? Ah, that's right. Obama would automatically be out anyway. Not much to lose, other than that legacy thing.
Under Obama his top appointees on his "Jobs Council" were offshoring their companies jobs to China the whole time while supposedly trying to create jobs stateside. American's who are working has had their incomes erode faster under Obama than any president in recent memory. I'm voting for romney, NOT Bush or Obama.
Biden needs to go back on his meds. When will these morons start taking responsibility for their actions. Always blaming others for their failures. That's all the administration is about, total failure. They can't run on their record, so they blame others and criticize anyone that has an idea that could help this country. They do this because they have nothing to offer. Oh they will tell you what you want to hear but look what happened 4 years ago, when Obama said that he will bring hope and change to this country. He hoped to change this country to the way HE wanted it, not what the American People want. So NO we are not better off than we were 4 years ago. The only ones better off are most likely the newly hired GOVERNMENT workers and the ones getting GOVERNMENT assistance, like that's a real plus. 40+millions on food stamps now that what this administration wants. We the People hired them to do a job. We are their boss. Why then do most of you want to be their lackeys. You want Freedom? So work for it. But if you want free stuff from the GOVERNMENT, well bend over. They will really give it to you, more ways than one.
Get out there and vote in November. All American Citizens have the right to vote and voice their opinions. You don't vote, then shut up, keep your opinions to yourself. If you can't get out there and vote because you don't like the ones running for office, then just stay in your home and lock the doors and close the blinds and say nothing. It's not the ones that do vote, but the ones that DON'T vote is where the problem is.

I may be wrong but I do not remember Carter coming anywhere close to this number of failures during his entire four years as President. I do not think he set anywhere near the number of records that the Obama administration has set as far as the weakest economic recovery ever, the most failed economic programs, the most Americans ever on food stamps, etc. I do not think Carter had nearly as many firsts as Obama such as the first government sanctioned American citizen assassination, the first ever U.S. credit downgrade, the first ever TRILLION dollar annual government deficit, etc. I do not think Carter had nearly as much disdain for individual Constitutional rights, Constitutional tenets. or the rule of law.
HopeisGone-every item on your list could be debated. Remember Obama wasn't the only elected official and Congress was to write laws but "NO" became their answer to every problem plaguing this country.
Actually "NO" became the answer to all the horrible ideas Obama and the Progressives tried to force down our throats.
Obama had a full majority in Congress, so to blame the mess they caused on the GOP or their supposed obstructionism is just pure BS.
PS: I THANK the GOP for saying NO. We would be in such a worse place if Obama, Pelosi and Reid were allowed to deploy their irresponsible and reckless fiscal mismanagement on us. Just imagine if the Democrats had the courage to have said "NO" when Bush rammed the Iraq war down our throats. We knew what Bush's intentions were, and we elected him anyways. I expected more from the Democrats. THEY FAILED US! Obama is just another fake leader who has FAILED US!
Re MF Global: Didja hear that there is a very good possibility PotC and FoO Corzine might avoid prosecution?

#165.1 - "HopeisGone-every item on your list could be debated. Remember Obama wasn't the only elected official and Congress was to write laws but "NO" became their answer to every problem plaguing this country."
You do realize, don't you, that the congress to which you apply your ' "NO" became their answer to every problem' comprises two chambers, the House and the Senate. For the last year and eight months, only the House has been under republican control. What about Obama using his influence with the Senate to make them more amenable to discussions with the House, or was not using his influence perhaps a way to be able to distance himself and blame the second leg of the republic, the same leg whtih which there was soooooo much smooching and cumbaya-ing during his first two years.

Wow! What an impressive list of accomplishments!
The question should be, Ryan and the GOP wing of Congress what did you do to help the economy and the American people?
In an January 20, 2012 in an interview with Laura Ingraham Mitt admitted that the economy was improving. During the GOP convention Ohio's Governor Kasich said how great Ohio was doing (Auto Industry). So how can Mitt say during the convention that Obama made it worst? flip, flip, flop. Dow was at 6000 in 2008 today it is over 13000+. Corporations (job creators) are sitting on 2trillion $'s. It might be a better argument that "trickle down economics" doesn't work for the average American.
gloriaCa,
How reassuring would it seem to the 20+ million unemployed to be told that after 4 years 'it could have been worse?'
Why do you think is the reason companies are sitting on piles of cash, whatever the quantities? It isn't because they like to sit in their counting houses, counting all their money. There's a much better (as in, more lucrative) use for the capital: expand capacity, which usually involves paying people to do things or make things. And why not do that? Because these companies apparently don't have any data suggesting and justifiable increase in demand. But that's my opinion. What's yours?

"Biden - 'America is better off- after Obama's first term"
But the Obama sychophant Governor of Maryland says (drumroll . . . . ) not. Ooops.
Anyone going to aske me for a source?
And, per Pigotry:
#1.2 - 'you are better off, but sometimes you don't know it.'
Oh, gee, a lot of us are too dumb to know it? Highly suggestive of hubris, at the least. Certainly insulting.
and
#1.3 - 'Do you want to go back to the same old failed policies of Bush?'
There you go again: BIOB - the same old failed attempt as buck-passing.
Well, no, and putting aside 2 years of a democratically controlled congress ushering out Bush and usheriong in Obama, what about the same old failed policies that have us at $15.9996 T in National Debt and over 20,000,000 unemployed?
Hit the road, Barack, and don't you come back no more.

After reading most of the comments all I have to say is, You can put lipstick on a PIG and guess what, It is still a PIG. Sorry Democrats 64 days and counting until November 6, 2012.....
Walk into any Mall in America, count the for Lease signs, now tell me how Great were doing. Socialism does not work. Never has never will. I do not understand why Obama thinks he can make Socialism work. Tax, Tax, Tax, Bigger Govt., Bigger Govt., Bigger Govt.
jack102,
Or, walk on Main Street (really, that's the name of the street) where my wife has a small business, and she will tell you volume is down, and has been down. '08 was OK, '09 and '10 were deep in the tank, '11 was a little better, and this year is still tracking to be down a good bit from '08. No, we are enn, ohh, tee better off. And that doesn't include the intangible but soon to be tangible effects from the $16 T debt. Clearly people are still not in any mood to spend, and probably many have good reason to feel that way.
F&B666
I presume many are familiar with the self-congratulatory declarations by the current administration re 'job creation' and it's plan and ability to do more. I've said before that in my opinion, the best federal actions can do is create some jobs by spending existant or non-existant public money, either for make-work or needed projects. The funny thing about this administration saying its policies, and only its policies, will be so wonderful is this interesting little tid-bit to arise from that relatively new, popular spectator sport, factchecking:
"as the Washington Post points out, Moody's Analytics predicts 12 million jobs by 2016, no matter who sits in the Oval Office."
And, of course, we don't want anyone to have to waste time cutting and pasting that into a search box, so here is the origin:
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57504387-503544/fact-check-mitt-romneys-convention-speech/
So, in an attempt to light the Romney campaign's pants on fire, well, I reported, you (plural you, but not "ya'll") decide.
F&B666
Does anyone else wonder how two very apparent and offensive consistencies seem to go unnoticed or ignored, even though they are very tell-tale?
The first, is that over the last twelve years, by most any measurement, the Republican Party and it's representatives have actually done next to nothing for the majority, the 99%. Oh, they have faulted the Democrats, especially Obama, very aggressively and with enthusiasm but when all of the distractive noise is cleared away, they have actually made no effort for the people, only working diligently to serve their masters, the 1%, and together bombarding the people with propaganda. Anyone not needing to be defensive and capable of being rational should easily see that and be able to agree.
Second, does it seem to anyone else like there could be a school that they go to, to perfect their look-alike performances, like maybe the "Karl Rove Training School of Obnoxious Arrogance"? I mean you take Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, Bachmann, McConnell, Santorum and several others, including GWBush, Cheney and Rove himself, and there is a definite consistency in their demeanor; they are all arrogant, bold, stubborn, uncompromising, argumentatively aggressive, unyielding and belligerent - just self-serving nasty. Now some may consider that to be strength, a quality (I'm sure "the money" does as it's done in their interests) but the reality is you can't work with people like that, there is just no possible way to deal with them or to ever achieve anything (the results we have seen strongly attest to that). It even appears they let Norquist, Limbaugh, Palin, Beck and a few others into their school.
Now those two things tell a story and simply identify the GOP as a no-hope resource for the majority. To support today's Republican / Tea Party is to support them as "puppets" for "the money" and is just asking to be conned and taken for granted. We have already seen and paid the costs for that with Bush-Cheney ... and for sure we are better off without any more of it.
'the 99%.' Indeed. That fellowship of the American taxpaying citizenry where the aggrieved lock arms and stand with each other in harmony and equality, from the $15,000 (AGI)/year filer to the $343,926 (AGI)/year filer. Yes, that is sarcasm. I'm sure there is much solidarity for those two extremes. My, but that 99 tnet is a rather big, all inclusive one, isn't it. But I guess that makes it easier to target the evil 1%-ers.
BO defined his own failure:
The Quote of the Decade:
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006
Didn't he also say something like; "If I haven't balanced the budget in 3 years I'm outa here"?
Obamas America:
No Jobs
No Construction
No housing Market
More People on welfare
For Lease signs up all over the country
More Taxes on the way
Thousands of New IRS Agents to Enforce the New Taxes
This the Face of SOCIALISM
Not Very Pretty
More Debt on the way to make it Worse
And don't forget, they want to take our guns so we can't fight back.
Trouble
What would those troops at Valley Forge think of Obama?
The term'friendly fire' comes to mind.
The only reason Biden is still on the ticket is because Hillary doesnt want to be Barrys VP. This guy is a doofus.
Obamas Future America:
No Energy
Higher Taxes
More IRS Agents
Empty Stores
Long Lines
More Taxes
More Govt. Agents to Enforce Tax Laws
Sounds like life behind the Old Berlin Wall
Welfare, Welfare, Welfare
I know I would sure hate to go back to 4% unemployment......that would really suck.
TO: jer67 who wrote:
We have to have a Democrat President in order to get back down to 4% unemployment.
The only time a Republican EVER presided over 4% unemployment is when he inherited an economy left by a Democrat.
