GREENVILLE, NC –- Paul Ryan will head west for a weeklong swing through several states he's yet to visit since being tapped as Mitt Romney's running mate.
Chairman of the RNC, Reince Priebus, joins Chuck Todd from Charlotte to talk about the Republican's "Obama isn't working" campaign that's being launched this week.
Starting Tuesday, the Republican vice presidential candidate will begin slowly working his way across the country before wrapping up a seven-day trip in the Pacific Northwest early next week.
A campaign aide said that Ryan's main focus "will largely -- though not entirely -- focused on fundraising” and some public campaign events may be intermixed.
While his running mate begins debate prep in Vermont, the Wisconsin congressman will appear in two Midwestern states Tuesday. He will first hold a rally in Cleveland, OH – marking his fifth visit to the Buckeye State -- before heading to Iowa, where he will campaign in Cedar Rapids and then Des Moines on Wednesday.
Wednesday night, Ryan will start his fundraising streak with a dinner event in Salt Lake City, Utah, his first trip to the state since begin announced as Romney’s running mate on Aug 11th. Tickets range from $1,000 to $25,000.
Though the schedule is still fluid, the House Budget Committee chairman is slated to head to California for a couple days and would attend, among other events, a luncheon at a private home in Fresno, CA on Saturday.
On Monday, Sept. 10, Ryan will visit two new states in the Pacific Northwest: Oregon and Washington.
The president's Deputy Campaign Manager, Stephanie Cutter, joins Chuck Todd to talk about what the President will say during his convention speech and how he will touch on last week's Republican convention.
He will begin his day with a small, high-dollar fundraiser in Portland, OR that will benefit the RNC Victory fund. Early afternoon, there is another larger fundraiser – with two-tiers for prices of tickets – specifically for the Romney campaign.
A source in the Beaver State notes they don’t anticipate Ryan or Romney making their way back to Oregon again before the Nov. 6 election.
Ryan will conclude his Monday with at least one fundraiser in the Seattle, WA area.
Ryan’s swing to the Pacific Coast takes him deep into Democratic territory. In 2008, California, Washington, and Oregon all went overwhelmingly for President Barack Obama.
The Romney campaign has nonetheless done very well raising money out West this cycle. Romney himself just did a swing out in California at the end of July, visiting San Francisco and Irvine. The campaign would not confirm how much they hope to raise during this upcoming week while the VP nominee is holding events.

When all of the misleading arguments are set aside, Romney’s economic proposal comes down to a simple tradeoff, less social insurance and other government programs for the working class, perhaps higher taxes as well, and more tax cuts for the wealthy. Perhaps that’s a tradeoff America wants to make, perhaps not – I suspect not. But whatever the choice, people should be fully informed about the decision they are making. Unfortunately, as is all too clear from their misinformation campaign, an informed electorate is not something that Romney, Ryan, and other Republicans have an interest in promoting.
The Romney-Ryan narrative about out of control spending, an over-zealous government, and growth inhibiting taxes isn’t accurate. First, our present budget problems are primarily the result of the Bush tax cuts, the recession, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As the CBPPpoints out, “Without the economic downturn and the fiscal policies of the previous Administration, the budget would be roughly in balance over the next decade.” It wasn’t out of control spending by Democrats or the policies enacted by Obama that created our current deficit problem, it was the decision by Bush and other Republicans to cut taxes and engage in wars.
Second, the deficit was also caused by the recession, but here again blame is misplaced. The recession wasn’t caused by over-zealous government policy as Republicans charge. It was an out of control private sector – the decisions of financial executives who made mountains of money as they crashed the economy – that caused our problems.
Third, Romney, Ryan, and other Republicans also argue that a key part of the solution to our troubles is to cut taxes for the wealthy, but there’s very little evidence that tax cuts for the wealthy spur economic growth. The economy’s performance after the Bush tax cuts, for example, does not support this contention.
And that’s not the only problem with Romney’s plan. Ananalysis by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center shows that Romney’s numbers can’t work unless there are large cuts to social programs the middle class relies upon, and regressive middle class tax increases. For reasons that are easy to guess, Republicans are doing their best to hide this from voters. For example, Mitt Romney won’t specify the spending cuts and middle class tax increases that will be needed in order to make his budget work. In fact, Romney insists – laughably according to every honest analyst that examines his plan – that he can balance the books by closing tax loopholes. But no matter how much Republicans try to avoid admitting it, large costs to middle class households cannot be avoided under the Romney plan.

Even hapless Herbert Hoover managed to increase spending more than Obama has.
In the 2009 fiscal year — the last of George W. Bush’s presidency — federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion. Check the official numbers at the Office of Management and Budget. Over Obama’s four budget years, federal spending is on track to rise from $3.52 trillion to $3.58 trillion, an annualized increase of just 0.4%. There has been no huge increase in spending under the current president, despite what you hear.

I wonder if Ryan can explain why he, as the actual congressman for the district that includes Janesville, didn't do anything to save that plant he was so worried about? Isn't that part of his job?

Ryan did in fact make efforts to secure the plant in Janesville, however, that plant was elected as one which needed to be closed under the restructuring, Ryan did not have adequate political clout to dictate the terms of the restructuring to favor his local backyard and the restructuring covered a vast region and several plants, many of which have been saved.
I find it really depressing that the American electorate generally elects the candidate who can afford the most commercials. I hope Ryan can raise enough to be comparable with Obama's funding. I'm just glad that Obama doesn't have the three-to-one advantage he had over McCain.

The only argument the Republicans have for casting your ballot for Romney/Ryan in November is that they are not Obama. This is the same argument that McCain/Palin had. I thought about voting for McCain but had no clue what he had in mind, policy wise. Romney/Ryan say they plan to get the economy moving. Well, DUH! Doesn't EVERYBODY have that plan? They should come up with something a little bit meatier than "we are not Barack Obama.
I'm looking forward to the press interactions on his trip, if any are allowed. These, more than any other factor, formed the opinions I now have of a recent GOP VP choice.
I have no problem saying that. I think prepared statements do little to define one's person and attitudes, and in my observation, it's spontaneous response to pertinent inquiry that really allow a viewer to form real opinions of a character.
In the past, politicians would present themselves to interview. But the liabilities of that process have been amply illustrated now, and we only see tightly-controlled discourse.
So it's logical to assume he will be effectively on vacation from direct media coverage. Fund-raising events are not covered, with the unsightly focus on money and all.
