I hope they get the help they need, I hope they realize where it comes from, and just who pays for it. It will not come from the wealthiest 1%, it will not come from corporate America, it will come from the very people who work for the government, and the taxes that are paid, the very things they denigrate day in and day out, and it will be paid for by Union men like me, and other middle class workers who make just enough money to pay more than twice the tax rate Romney does.

Mitt Romney likes to say he won't "apologize" for his success in business. But what he never says is "thank you" – to the American people – for the federal bailout of Bain & Company that made so much of his outsize wealth possible.

You are right about people that pay no taxes but receive federal money and in that regard, the top ten welfare states as measured by how much they pay in verse what they get back in federal welfare are solid republican states. The median income in Texas is $11.20 an hour, that's $22,400 a year for fifty weeks work, I made more than that in 1982, and half the people Texas make less than that, so you are right they will not owe any federal income taxes but they will receive plenty of federal welfare even if they are working. They could probably help themselves in they did not vote for things like the right to work for less, and less, and less, and required corporations and other businesses to pay fair wages and benefits, and to pay their fair share of taxes. BTW these same states also have many of the highest averages of consumer debt in the nation, the average Texan borrows over $29,000 to buy a car, obviously the low taxes, and the low wages are not helping the majority of the people in Texas, or the local, state, and federal government. They certainly do not have 1982 prices to go along with their 1982 wages. Whether or not it would balance the budget is not the issue, it would not make the budget worse that is certain, but it is a matter of fairness, it strikes at this whole notion of you can move up in America, but of course until you do you will pay twice as much percentage of your hundred grand of income in taxes as a guy that makes 1000 times that much. Lastly if low taxes are such a great idea how come I have never heard a republican propose that my taxes be lowered to less than 15%, all their proposals effectively raise my taxes or give me less services for the taxes I pay, if this low tax rate thing works, how come it only works in the case of people with extremely large amounts of money?

The reason capital gains are taxed at a lower rate is due to several reasons. First off it is an investment with risks. There is no guarantee that they are going to get a return on their money. Secondly, we need the "rich" to invest their money. By having a lower tax rate we increase the amount of money that they will put at risk.

You want investment in America, well then there has to be a payoff.

I will answer a couple of remarks at once: when I worked under a collective bargaining agreement my wage and fringe package was 54 bucks an hour, my income was roughly 5X the median income of Texas, so yes I did pay about 30% and yes in the big picture that is a modest income. My dues were 2% of my gross, that's two cents on the dollar, if you worked overtime and made more money you paid a little more in dues, if you missed time due to lay offs or illness and made less money you owed less dues, a very fair arrangement, and considering what a non union counterpart might make in the same industry my union dues were the best investment I have ever made. Even if an industry is unionized and in a non right to work for less, and less, and less state, nobody can force you to take that job, you are free to go and do something else.

I would love to you to see your sources on said economists though. Not only that but he needed to wait as any earlier he would have been a distraction from what needed to be done with the focus being on the safety and rescue of the Louisiana residents and the immediate needs of the community. They are going to pay me more than I ever made as a union employee and the benefits are lavish, and to top it all off, if the people who I supervise work real hard they will pay me a bonus, not the people that did the hard work, proud of me now Bob. Funny isn't it many of the same people who might tell me I expected too much as a union worker will now gladly accept that I am paid much more to watch and direct others to do the work as management in the same industry I have worked for most of my life. I can tell you why Romney is not releasing his returns.

There are over 500 pages, all legal, and filled out by people who understand the tax code better than you or I do. I have training in taxes and I would not be qualified to judge how these complicated trust fund returns are done.

Gov Romney has had his money in trust since becoming the governor of Massachusetts. He is not able to manipulate everything and the decisions are made by the trust where money is. Any attacks in this area are simply people trying to distort to gain a political advantage or to justify their vote.

I guess I'm one of the lucky few of who has voted for both Romney and Obama. Romney's only public office was Governor of Massachusetts and I got sucked into the idea that here was a guy smart enough to turn around the winter Olympics. But as soon as he took the oath of office he started to burnish his conservative credentials by dumping all kinds of right-wing legislative proposals on a left wing state. In other words, for the most part, he sucked as governor. But to be fair, he managed to get into law Romney Care built essentially on the keystone of "individual mandate." About Texas ... the median income is around $50,000 although it has dropped about $4,000 a year each year under Obama for the household.

The median hourly wage in Houston (Texas biggest metro area) is almost $23 an hour.

I don't know how Obama's BLS figures / skews the $11 number, but suffice it to say that kids trying to support their Mustang payment ( not a family) making minimum wage (they still have mom and dad's insurance) are a very big part of that ... waiters and waitresses for the 12 restraunts on every corner make minium wage while making their real income in tips .... ton of migrant workers and illegals especially in south Texas ...

And finally, you seem to disconnect federal income tax from the full spectrum of taxes paid, or even for federal tax reality. For some reason, the statistics alway seem to assume that taxpayers with $25-50k are all young couple parents of 2 or 3 children. A more accurate model today, as we baby-boomers age, is that of a semi-retired (or forcibly retired) couple or single person who still pays 10-15% or more in federal income taxes (even on unemployment payments). Plus state income taxes, federal and state gas taxes, real estate taxes (landlords do pass them through in rent), sales taxes, tobacco and alcohol taxes, hotel taxes, road tolls, TSA and airport user fees, pet tag fees, and even trash collection fees. Not to mention fees associated with just filing a death certificate and settling an estate (which can be substantial at the state level).

Do you really want to help the American economy? Spend some money.

If you don't have money because you are unemployed or under-employed (the 23million+ to which Clint Eastwood alluded), you cannot help the American economy. If you earn at, or less than, minimum wage; you cannot help the American economy. If you WERE a two-income household, now trying to survive on a single income, you cannot help the economy.

For those who are left, business is NOT waiting for political decisions or tax-code changes (which happen regardless of party or timing), but for your demand for their product. Buy the new house, new car, new appliances or furniture (if it is American in make or manufacture). That is what restarts the economy.

Unfortunately, basic wages and employment dictate that it will take much longer to recharge the economy. Wages are too low, living expenses are too high, credit is too tight, and job security is too small to allow those private sector 'stimulus' purchases.

And for those who would believe in the 1% trickle down theory; consider this. 1% of the gross American population is 3.5million. But of that total nearly 25% are age 65+ and perhaps nearly 30% are under 21. So we are left with roughly half, or 1.75million consumers. The US automotive marketplace has traditionally been 14-18million units. To absorb even 1/2 the market demand, each 1%'er would have to buy 4-8 autos and trucks per year. Discounting fleet and corporate sales might reduce this to 3-6 vehicles.

But wealthy people didn't get wealthy, or keep their wealth, by spending money on expensive cars. The car that Ted Kennedy drove off the bridge in 1969 was a two year old Dodge. Similar analogies can be made of the personal vehicles of people like Warren Buffet, Charlie Munger, Bill Gates, etc. Ted Turner concentrates on gaining control of land, not multiple homes.

The obvious truth is that the 1% will not, nor should be expected to replace a missing 1/2 of the economy's contributers (many missing due to decisions made by the 1%). The remaining 49-50% will have to recover, regroup, and re-imagine a secure future; before our economy recovers.

But that recovery will have a cost of lost jobs to automation and off-shoring. We must realise that our old standards of secondary education and 'backwoods' knowledge will no longer provide either jobs or income. And that problem will take even longer to correct, since today we are content to discard one of every three or four potential 'graduates.' And what are our expectations? 8th grade reading and math? No trigonometry? No second language? No history or political science? No mechanical arts (no longer offered in most schools)? BUT, we can fund football, basketball, baseball, etc. -- for the professional benefit of about 0.01% of secondary athletes. That will take decades to change.

Jimmy Carter's failure ( A democrat) to address the stagnation caused by wage and price controls the democrats wanted during the 70's and his policies that not only spent more, increased taxes, but greatly increased regulations on business. The results was double digit inflation, interest rates, and unemployment.

The giving loans to people that don't deserve them was passed and kept safe from investigation from both democrats AND republicans. We earned the crash of 2008 because of putting people in office who hand out candy to those who vote for them.

The government provided the incentive and funds to build the infrastructure. The government redistributed the funding so that States and cities with small populations could have the same availability to infrastructure as states and cities with high populations. Government provides assistance to startup businesses.

Sure all this comes from our tax dollars but NOT from the business creator alone. It takes all of us paying our fair share that enables people to start new businesses without worrying about having enough money to build streets, install water and sewage lines, putting in storm sewers or street lighting. How many startups take advantage of government backed loans?

The only way to fix the deficit is to raise revenue and lower spending. With massive amouts of people not paying much tax because they are on unemployment due to their jobs being sent overseas there must be another way of bringing in revenue. The only ones left would be the wealthy. Revenue cuts MUST include the Defense Department along with everyone else. We spend more on military, already far and away above all others, than any other country. Significant cuts, especially since we use a lot more technology these days, won't hurt the ability of our military to protect us.

Unfortunately some think that tax cuts alone and spending cuts alone will solve the problem. It's not gonna happen. Likewise we can't continue unabated spending on pork barrels and other things. President Obama has already reduced the size of government and more can be done.

Ah, you people. I didn't in any way say that no money is spent extracting the country from a recession, but reducing spending as well as taxes and burdensome regulations.
This is the complete opposite of what Obama has done with his trillion dollar plus deficits each and every year.

As for pointing out recessions or depressions that were recovered from with monetary discipline, one need only to look at the depression of 1920 and you would find an unemployment rate around 12% and a declining GDP. What president Harding did was to cut the federal budget, slash the tax rates to the point that many of the low income earners paid nothing and reduced the national debt. The end result was that the economy rebounded quickly from the 1920–1921 depression and entered a period of quite vigorous growth.

You mention FDR as the one that saved us from the great depression by massive spending. Pay attention to what actually happened and what FDR actually accomplished and you'll see parallels to Obama's failed policies. FRD did indeed inject much money into the economy and seemed to be pulling us out of the depression. However, much like today, this economic activity was an illusion since when the money supply dried up, so did the economic activity. FDR was rather distraught at the dire situation of the economy in and around 1938 and going forward where unemployment levels rose to around the levels seen during the depression. He has spent all this money and created all these wonderful programs with the end result not much different than the conditions that existed during the depression. What saved his bacon was the country's entry into WWII.

We now have a president that has increased the national debt to unimaginable levels and has nothing to show for it except for the expansion of the welfare system. There's a reason for this since Obama is/was a member of the NEW party, a political party that espouses the expansion of the welfare state to the levels necessary to collapse the economy. How's that working out for you?

Contrary to the fake compassion/concern for the "people" and phony baloney posing of the two corporate funded candidates, Obama and Romney, I think the most likely scenario post election (no matter who wins) is a bi-partisan attack on the living standards of the middle class and poor using the deficit as an excuse.

(We have had higher deficits before (1946) with no lasting ill effects on the economy, and the deficit, such as it is, was caused by bailing out the crooked banks and giving tax breaks and other give aways to the rich.)

The Democrats and Republicans have already signed on a deal to cut trillions from Federal spending (AFTER the election-and you can bet they will exempt "defense" spending some how) to attempt to drive the deficit below 3% of GDP which will devastate the standard of living of millions of Americans.

The deficit target is significant because, even though we are not in the Eurozone, it is the same as the EU and their forced attempts to reach this limit in Europe during the last 5 years has devastated the living standards and economies of Southern Europe. And most of the EU countries that haven't been driven into recession by the budget cutting are heading that way.

The "deficit" (created by the recession which was created by the bankers swindling) is being used in Europe and the U.S. to reverse all of the gains made by the working class in the first half of the last century and bring about what will be essentially a corporate feudal society ("Banana Republic") in the formerly more democratic, developed West.

Thanks for bringing up President Harding. You're right that his actions in 1923 resulted in lowering unemployment and increasing GDP. However, about six years after enacting his changes (with Coolidge pushing through even more pro-business, less government oversight) we enter the Great Depression. The time-span from when these actions were taken to when the depression started seem eerily similar to what we're currently going through.

We now have a president that has increased the national debt to unimaginable levels and has nothing to show for it except for the expansion of the welfare system. There's a reason for this since Obama is/was a member of the NEW party, a political party that espouses the expansion of the welfare state to the levels necessary to collapse the economy. What ails me is the political system of our country is headed by power craving money thirsty scum, who sell their concience to the highest bidder, PAC, lobbyist, or one of the good ole boys they work with to pass consistant stop gap legislation, while conversing a dialogue of blame the other party for all our ills, and the beat goes on and on. Let me off this ride and let me stand on stable ground. George Washington warned about our political system made up of a two party system as that is what many fled in England. The older, and more savy of a babe in the woods fellow I've become, watching the leaders of our country deny every form of scandalous behavior known to man while claiming moral righteousness, I really become angry at how we the people, is now we the deaf, dumb, and blind. Where have all the true statesmen all gone? Why do we settle for so little from those we elect? I can't find truth on NBC, ABC, or Fox, no just more deaf, dumb, and blind political dogma which shapes daily conversations at work, with friend, and in social media.

Political reform is the only way to rebuild, and change this crazy merry go round we ride and get off long enough to go hang chads, or have political organizations recruit voters who favor their candidate, and intimidate those who oppose theirs, all the while get government financing to pay their expenses, Jim Crow laws of the past and Acorn of the recent past. Both parties have flaws. Both have a few members who actually could explain the planks of their platform, so why do we never here the nuts and bolts of righting the mechanical flaw of this system.

When you have legistators and senators who get paid a flat salary for their service, don't have a built in pay raise that takes effect whenever they ignore the deadline to prevent an increase any given year, have a separate, and much more gratuitous than the average federal employee's retirement plan, and have no legal way to accept money, plane rides, or any hidden gratuity from PACs or business organizations, which does violate the code of conduct of any other federal employee; and we set term limits for any senator or legislator elected, to include supreme court justices too, then we would only have dedicated statesmen running our government with a budget that does not forfit our next generation persuit of life liberty and the persuit of happiness which our constitution is to protect each basic citizen's rights.

While we are on the subject of citizen rights, when does one get to have rights of being a citizen in this country? After they are naturalized, if foreign, or ten years following illegally entering this country? When does citizenship become your right?

If you think Obama, Bush, Clinton or Kennedy actually cared about you and your plight, you are dumber than a stump. And probably destined to a similar fate. Wake up America, I seerved in our military, worked in DC for the federal government, and taught and coached in Texas prior to my federal employ, and I haven't got much faith in the moral fiber of our current political system from my varied life experiences. If 'modern' America was truly concerned about its national debt, the tax rate on incomes over $1million/year, regardless of source, would have been 90% since 1986. Comparable to the rates under Eisenhower to retire the WWII debt.

Had that been the case, many of our $billion to $trillion dollar holes might have been avoided. Likewise, new projects might have been eyed more skeptically. This SHOULD be the TEA PARTY standard, but if you examine what they really say, they are back to a 1980's business and investor strategy of 1% trickle-down and government assistance to business without regard to a real return.

So the President is going to present a better path forward. We need to know now. What about the path he has us on now. The President is the President now. The President has promises to keep now. With out conditions to include any action of congress, the President promised that the 2012 federal deficit will not exceed 229.27 billion dollars. Fiscal year 2012 is now and will be over at the end of this month. Fiscal 2012 money is being spent now. I want the President to tell us what he is going to do to keep his promise regarding this year, regarding now. We need to know now. What path are we taking forward now?

The last path was a dead end, so he needs a new one. The ONLY path I want to see him travel is the one heading back to Chicago in January.

Henry Ford would not have been grateful to have roads for the cars he built to drive on? He would not have been thankful for the infrastructure to allow him to build a business? Too bad we can't go back and ask him. We can, however, ask current business owners how they feel about infrastructure's role in their business. I think even the republicans would have to admit that it is very handy to have roads that they don't have to either build or maintain in order for their customers to access their businesses.

The fact is that government is totally reliant on the private sector. There are very few things that the private sector relies on government for. You look at government as a separate entity as an equal bidder for goods and services. They aren't. Government takes money from the people solely because they are the government. Anything they build, they aren't really building. They take money from those who are building and hiring private sector companies to build something. Hopefully, they are building what people want. The only practical reason the government was involved in building roads is because of the power of eminent domain that they have. It's not the government being benevolent. It's the private sector saying you have the one power that we need to get this done so here's our money now get it done.

What we save we save for retirement, a car or a down payment on a home. So eventually all our savings are spent during a lifetime. Secondly, Governor Romney has a "blind trust" which means he has no involvement in how his money is invested. It is completely managed by others.

President Obama had a filibuster proof Congress for a scant 7 months - during which time Ted Kennedy was ill so he didn't vote, and there were several recesses. So, he actually had a filibuster proof Congress for about 4 months. During that time he tried to work with the Republicans in Congress not knowing they had taken a vow to block everything he tried.

After that, the Republicans have used the filibuster more than any time in history to block the President's proposals.

The regular guy doesn't get it. No what Romney has done is not illegal. You know what it isn't illegal? Because guys/corporations like Romney and the Kochs own the government. And they've taken something that should be illegal, that is so immoral it's unbelievable and made it legal to suit their robber baron methodology.

Do you know what Romney did at Bain Capital? He took over companies by borrowing huge sums of money, he charged the company a management fee then he ruined them by taking out all of the money he could and saddling them with a debt from HIS loans and HIS fees. These were solvent companies people spent decades building. They had employees that had worked for them for 40 years. They were household names that ran very well before Bain forced a take over and siphoned away the revenue that made them run. These companies employed thousands of people before Bain and Romney decided that elevator in the garage was more important than the livelihood of the people who had worked at these jobs in these communities for years.

LETS BE CLEAR: WITH MANY OF THESE COMPANIES THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. BAIN BOUGHT A CONTROLLING SHARE OF STOCK AND TOOK THEM OVER. THEY WERE PERFECTLY HEALTHY COMPANIES THAT BAIN CAPITAL RAPED FOR PROFIT.

Is this illegal? Nope. You know why it isn't? Look to the SCOTUS. Look at what they did for Citizens United. This is what a great deal of money can buy. It can also buy congressmen to pass laws that allow things like the behavior of Bain Capital to be perfectly legal.

Now to the real question: Legal or not, IS IT MORAL?

Is this immoral disgusting arrogant entitled man the person you want to be your next president?

If so can you sleep at night knowing you've supported and endorsed this sort of behavior?

There's so much wrong with your comment that I don't know where to start except to say that you should learn more about Bain Capital and what they did.

Bain Capital worked with struggling companies to try to turn them around. They were hugely successful. I'd bet you've shopped at a number of stores that are only there because of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital.

You should also learn more about Governor Romney. You call him immoral, disgusting and arrogant - You do not know anything about the Governor. I'll give you the same advice that I give my kids, don't throw accusations around without the facts to back it up.
