Ale to the chief: White House reveals beer recipe that has Internet abuzz

White House employees are divulging the secret recipes for President Obama's honey porter, honey brown and honey blond ales, allowing cameras into the kitchens to see the process for making the homebrewed beers. NBC's Mike Viqueira reports.

Attention homebrewers, hipsters, and/or independent voters (they hope?): This beer is for you!

After much online buzz, a petition, and a question to the president of the United States by a Reddit user, the Obama White House has released the recipes for its "honey ale" and "honey porter" beers.

For beer buffs, sample ingredients include "1.5 oz Kent Goldings Hop Pellets" in the ale version, and "3 oz chocolate malt (cracked)" in the heavier Porter. Both use honey farmed on a bee-hive on the South Lawn.

Over 12,000 people signed an internet "We the People" petition for the Oval Office to disclose the recipe for the much-buzzed about honey ale. Asked about the beer during a recent chat with Reddit users, the commander-in-chief disclosed that the first alcohol allegedly brewed on the White House grounds is "tasty."

While Obama and GOP VP nominee Paul Ryan have been known to knock back a beer on the trail, neither Republican nominee Mitt Romney nor Obama running mate Joe Biden drink alcohol.

It's been known for years that the Obama's sometimes serve a home-brewed beer at the White House, but now people are hoping to find out what the secret ingredients are. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Hmmmmm, I thought the prez was a Christian , seems that having a brewery in the white house will win him the alcoholic vote , What's next? Will he fire up a hooter in the oval office ? You people into politics are the real nutcases of this country . You wanna bash Christians, calling them radicals, terrorists ,that's reason this world is is heading toward GOD's WRATH . Isn't it the politicians that start the wars? Isn't it politicians that voted for the NDAA ? Anybody in this country who hasn't read the NDAA in it's entirety ,is both ignorant of what's happening , and oblivious to the fact, that both the Repubs and Dems are bought and paid for. Electorial College my big ole' fat a$$ ! It's all a sham ,thesis vs. anti-thesis,good cop -bad cop , all to keep you distracted to what's really goin down . The more they keep you glued to the TELL-a-Vision ,the less you read the BIBLE . You had your chance to return your freedoms with Ron Paul ,Bible says if we could have healed BABYLON we would ,but she cannot be healed so forsake her .Whether you believe or not, God's Prophets didn't lie. They foretold of these Earthquakes in Diverse places, They foretold of Global Warming .....In the latter days, men shall blaspheme GOD because of the heat of the sun . Bible prophecies that this president will be a raiser of TAXES, but he shall not stand ,but one shall rise in his place ,a MAN of fierce appearance ,understanding DARK SENTENCES ,and by Peace he shall destroy many . This is the Anti-Christ about to make his appearance ,he will lead the NWO into the Great Tribulation. Bible says he will make Witch "Craft " to prosper , Because he understands DARK sentences (Incantations/spells) logic would conclude he will be a sorcerer.

I have never tried to make home brew beer before; just root beer (several bottles exploded in my bedroom closet because I used too much yeast).

This might be fun. In fact, it could fun for BOTH Democrats AND Republicans. Just think how much fun you could have with your own label designs! What better place to make a personal statement than on your own personally designed home-brew Obama Beer labels (and you can say whatever you want on the labels and no one can collapse them. Hey, PERFECT!)

Anyway, time to print the recipe make a trip to Whole Foods for ingredients ... and try to remember where I put that old bottle capper press.

CHEERS!

;-)

PS. Does anyone remember which President it was who was 'infamous' for rumors that he was making wine and bathtub gin in the White House? (I have forgotten that part of my US History, but I was thinking it might have happened during prohibition?)

Forrest Gump said: Not me I am drunk on success, I lost half my retirement account under Bush, and gained it all back and then some since Obama took over

Then I guess you didn't really lose your retirement account then did you Forrest... Considering that Bush didn't take it from you, it was the whims of the market... much of was caused by democrat policies coming out of their housing and banking rules. God knows, Obama didn't put that money back in... so really it's silly to try to blame one president and give credit to the other... think about it.

Hey Forrest... let's say a glitch in the financial system occurs like a huge failure in the market system... a monitary problem that pops up... something that has been known to take the market down... Let's say that occurance causes you to lose another half in your retirement account... will you blame Obama like you blame Bush?

The beer recipe will never be made in this house. I don't trust it. Obama has loaded it with ingredients that cause people to become brainwashed... or else why would so many people think Obama is doing a good job with our economy, unemployment and have such negative attitudes for Romney? I'm sure the prior brainwashing was through telepathy... but times are getting desperate so Obama has released his witches brew to try to seal the deal.

Now of course you realize this is irony... so please, if you have anything to say... say it to the empty chair next to me.

"A beer recipe is about the LAST thing that we need out of the White house.

I guess you missed the part of the article which noted that 12,000 people signed an Internet petition requesting these recipes. "Reading is fundamental."

Now if we could just get someone decent to replace him."

Hmmm, wow, that's a tough one. Someone decent, gosh. Well, I watched all three nights of the GOP Convention this past week and I just didn't "see" anyone who meets that criteria. So ... good luck with that!

;-)

PS. There was, of course, that un-seen guy sitting in the chair next to Clint Eastwood and heckling him, during Eastwood's speech. From what I was able to tell from Eastwood's responses to him, that un-seen guy in the chair totally 'owned' Eastwood.

Interesting lead-in: Clint Eastwood talking to an empty chair, followed by Mitt Romney doing his spot-on portrayal of an empty suit.

Well BrianB I wrote a lengthy reply to your post hours ago but something happened and newsvine ate my post. So I will try again.

I get it Brianb even though you say it is silly to credit or blame a president you blame Obama all day every day for everything you feel could be better. I know how this works when Bush was in charge you say the problem was democrats in the Congress, but now that the House is controlled by republicans you do not find fault with them, it's just the president. It is always liberals, democrats, and Obama's fault, always. The loss of wealth under Bush was astounding, it staggered the world and cannot be fairly described as a "whim" of the market. Our entire financial system does not damn near collapse due to a "whim" of the market. Bush was president, the people he appoints to the regulating agencies and such are republicans it happened under their watch and that is a fact. Under Obama the economy has improved by every measure, the market is double where it was in Nov. 2008, instead of losing jobs we are gaining jobs, the GDP has improved, and home equity is rising again. Now those are facts, you can credit or blame anyone you wish, but you should not keep asking me to ignore the facts, and keep claiming things are worse than than ever because of Obama, they are not worse, they are better since Obama took over, and democrats filled key posts with their appointees. You can credit or blame who you wish, but under 8 years of republican leadership everything went to hell, and under the current leadership everything has improved, you want awfully bad for me to say the economy has been ruined by Obama, but it's just not true, the economy is much better than it was. Not to mention the fact that were are out of Iraq and Bin Laden is gone, something else Bush and republicans started but could not finish. Call me silly if you wish, but I lost a ton of dough under a republican president, I gained it all back and more under Obama a democrat, so yes I am dissatisfied with republicans, and happy with Obama, you got a good reason I should not feel that way, something based in fact, something other than your personal disdain for Obama. What is that simple question people like to ask: are you better off than you were four years ago? Yes I am much better off, it's that simple and it's the truth. You can save all the Liberal, Socialist, Marxist, Communist, out to destroy America silliness, he has not destroyed anything, except the notion that republicans can handle the economy, if you look at the facts, and the real numbers as they were, and as they are now. You gonna tell me the republicans in the House, the most unproductive Congress in our lifetime with the lowest approval rating ever recorded should get the credit. I am voting for Obama, in fact I am voting straight democratic, because I like being better off than I was four years ago.

Quite factual Forrest, but I doubt Brian B will even read it, he has trouble with big words and the truth.

On another note when I first saw Clint doing his act I thought he was drunk, then sadly it hit me, dementia. I went through it with both my parents, I know the signs. He does not have long to go, and I liked him when he had all his marbles. Maybe that explains people who stick up for Willard and Ayn Paul Ryan no matter how much they would ruin their lives, it must be early stage dementia.

I told him obviously if god considered it a sin to drink Jesus wouldn't have turned water into wine as it's stated in the bible. He babbled something about it must mean grape juice but couldn't explain why they'd say grape juice if they meant wine as clearly they had both.

For those who defended Willard grandstanding in a disaster area because he would "build morale" check out this gem:

Romney and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) spent close to an hour meeting with first responders and local officials. Romney shook hands with National Guardsmen outside the U.S. Post Office and talked with a local resident, Jodie Chiarello, 42, who lost her home in Isaac's flooding.

"He just told me to, um, there's assistance out there," Chiarello said of her conversation with Romney. "He said, go home and call 211." That's a public service number offered in many states.

It is just mind boggling. He could have shared the cases of beer Obama said he carries on Air Force One to relax. Relax from what? WorK? writing jobs bills? writing budgets that not a single Democrat could vote for?

No Jeremy, me and the 23,000,000 people out of work would rather have a president that works on the economy and jobs than one to drink a beer with. If I had a chance to have a beer with Obama the one question I would him ask him would be : What in the hell is the matter with you?

Please explain how Bush was responsible for your loss and barry got it back for you! Unless you are in the auto union and benefitted from obama's decision to GIVE General Motors to the unions.... the biggest theft in US history!

And, while you're at it... explain how barry killed Osama bin Laden when it's generally agreed (except for obama beer sucking folks) that the Navy Seals killed Obama because of the protocols put in place by Bush to located and destroy obl only came to fruition when barry was in office... ? Barry kept Bush's protocols and did absolutely nothing else himself that led to that May raid by Navy Seals trained during Bush's administration.... how the obamamites screw with the truth to support the worst President in our history!!!! bensnead: the order to conduct the raid came from PRESIDENT OBAMA (you really should learn to spell) not from President Bush. President Bush was too busy getting no bid contracts for his buddy, Dick Cheney's company in Iraq to bother actually going after the mastermind behind the deaths of 3000 people on American soil.

But hey, good to know that since that traitor of a SEAL has leaked all of the operational protocols, you know exactly what happened.

Morris/Andres: I don't think anybody is being critical of a president throwing back a few beers - I think the criticism is we have a president with no experience of being a leader before taking office, has no plan (simply says things like "Republicans are blocking my jobs bill" when there is no bill even written or up for debate on the House and Senate floors), tells us "the private sector is doing fine" when clearly it is not, and so on who appears to not care about the country and rather play golf and make home brew.

So Obama should be spending his time trying to get Harry Reid to allow debate of the dozens of House bills already passed. Obama should be demanding the Democrats put together a budget and vote on it (he has not had ONE budget since taking office). Instead he is golfing more than George Bush did while in office (funny THAT was criticized during the Bush administration) and making beer (which I have helped my brother make his beer and know it is very time intensive).

Nothing wrong with EITHER golfing or making beer - if everything was fine. What Obama is doing is like a CEO of a failing company coming into the office and showing off the artwork he created. Nothing wrong with spending time painting - unless your job is to grow your company. Same thing here. Obama's job is to fix the economy - and it just gives the impression he doesn't care when he is golfing all the time and spending time making beer.

But the good thing is starting January he will have all the time he needs to play golf and make beer when he moves back to Chicago.

I took a look at the recipes. They're not even very good and show nowhere near a 'brewmaster's' level. I know this because I am a homebrewer (primarily wines - from fruit to finished product). They are the type of recipe an amateur makes when they are just beginning to learn how to make beer. A brewmaster would start with the malted grain and make the wort from scratch. It's about an 8-hour process just to convert the starches to sugars and extract the sugars from the grain.

So he fronts money to make more breweries and gambles away all that borrowed money.. I laughed my arse off when the TV add of his said beware Romney's plans will cost the tax payers 5 trillion dollars and mine will balance the budget.. After he has spent that much in 3 years, he must be counting on the American people being awful stupid come election day..

All those thousands of people who were mandated to evacuate and did not should have been convinced to do so by the mayor (who left town and went to Texas) . So we all know he is continuing to satisfy his thirst for beer.... what is he doing about the other two vices he admits to have had or still has? A pot garden in the Rose Garden maybe? Golf outings? Well, yes, the president plays golf occasionally. Maybe your GOP up-and-coming star Chris "Crisco" Christie (waiting to make his big play in 2016, if he's still alive) should get out and play golf instead of spending the entire day feeding his morbidly obese face. At least Barack Obama can tie his own shoes.

Horrible designer outfits? First, Michelle Obama pays for her own clothes, not the taxpayers. Second, you clearly haven't been paying attention, because she has mostly worn American designed clothes from stores like J Crew and Banana Republic.

Obama has done a great job, despite all the lies, distortions and obstructionism from the GOP.

From day one of Obama's presidency the right wingers have been whining"we have to take back our country!" Well the rest of us did take back our country. We wrestled it out of the incompetent hands of the Bush Republicans and we're still trying to repair all of the damage they did. Stop complaining and support your president.

I can't even imagine how bad off the country would be under McCain and that idiot Palin. Romney is cut from the same cloth.

            Vote Obama!

I guess you are all going to get drunk and just sit there with your hands out waiting for your welfare checks...this country has gone to he77 in a handbasket and you could care less that Jokebama has driven us off the proverbial cliff. He's got a beer recipe...i guess that is all he needs, because that is all he has to run on. DECEIVE, DENY and DEFLECT. Typical libby thinking. You sheep deserve to have turd for 2 1/2 more months. Then the handouts will END, so get off your momma's couch, put down the 6-foot subs and GET A JOB, freeloaders. Oh, wait...thanks to your messiah, Lord Blowbama, there ARE no jobs. I guess you are screwed. Karma is a bit*h, huh.

Debbie - Thomas Jefferson did indeed make his own beer.... many folks did so back in those days... there weren't any Budweiser's or Coors in those days!

However Thomas Jefferson did not add $8 trillion to the debt under his watch...that's Barry's thing, nor did he fund companies (that all went bankrupt later) with taxpayer $s, another Barry gem. And most specifically Thomas Jefferson didn't blatently trample the US Constitution (a document he helped write) so shamelessly like Barack Hussein Obama has and continues to do so....

Also no one ever asked Thomas Jefferson about his birth certificate! lol!

We can see that all liberal agruments can be easily refuted with facts, logic, and humor!

You don't know a thing about Jefferson do you? The "teabaggers" of his day HATED him. They spread as much crap about him as the "teabaggers" do now with your President.

It was Jefferson, after all, that wrote the Letter to the Danbury Baptists that became the standard reference regarding the Wall of Separation between church and state.

He worried about Corporations taking over the govt. or the religious nutcases of his day doing the same.

And God bless the "teabaggers" pointed little heads, they have brought BOTH of Jefferson's worries to fruition.

The recipes use extracts and crystal malts only, a brewmaster would start with the malted grain. I speak from experience here. I've been a homebrewer for over 30 years.

A business license is not required to brew beer for consumption in one's own household. It is not brewed, in this case, by the President. He has better things to do. The kitchen staff would brew the beer or ale.

I am glad the White House can give out beer recipes. How about the White House do something useful like get the U.S. were it use to be. Who cares if Biden does not drink. He has been so absent the last four years I forgot he was even VP

Now the weather is Obama's fault Francle? Wow, everytime there's a storm, tornado, flood, hurricane, drought Obama has to drop everything and rush to multiple locations like W never did. Obama will be in Louisiana Monday and will actually get off the plane. Have another beer Barack, you deserve it for all the morons you have to tolerate very minute of every day. Thank you for being the best President since Bill Clinton. Four more years please. Pass the great white house recipe!!

David L...no one said the hurricane is Obamas fault..and I agree that Clinton was a great President. Did a lot of good for this country , especially the economy and the defecit. But I think the point made was how appaling it is that Obama hasn't found time to go to Louisianna because he is too busy trying to save his ass from defeat. I also agree that it was just as wrong for G.W. not to show any concern for hurricane victims, but we all know he and his family don't care much for black people anyway... What is Obamas excuse? Once again, it's time for change..."Bye BYE Blackbird"
