Romney kicks off fall campaign by tackling economics in Ohio talk

Brian Snyder / Reuters

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney greets audience members Saturday at a campaign rally in Cincinnati, Ohio.

CINCINNATI -- Mitt Romney marked the start of the fall campaign Saturday, which coincided with the season-opening weekend of college football, by comparing President Barack Obama to the coach of a faltering team whose losing record means he must be replaced.

"One of the promises that he made was that he was going to create more jobs and today 23 million people are out of work or stopped looking for work or under employed," Romney told a raucous rally crowd in Southern Ohio in the morning. "Let me tell you, if you have a coach that is zero and 23 million, you say it's time to get a new coach. It's time for America to see a winning season again and we're going to bring it to them."

Romney, who pulled out of a planned joint rally with his running mate Paul Ryan in Virginia in favor of a trip to survey hurricane damage in Louisiana on Friday, hit the stump with renewed vigor, cribbing from his Thursday night acceptance speech at the RNC convention and whipping up a crowd of supporters in an art deco train station cum museum, where the acoustics led to Romney's words often being drowned out by applause.

"United, America built the strongest economy in the history of the earth. United we put Neil Armstrong on the moon. United we face down unspeakable darkness. United our men and women in uniform continue to defend freedom today," Romney said. "This is a time for us to come together as a nation. We do not have to have the kind of divisiveness and bitterness and recriminations we've seen over the last four years. I will bring us together."

Supporters here said they were happy to hear Romney return to the themes of his convention speech, with even long-time Romney backers like Sheila Bender of Lebanon, Ohio, telling NBC News that the convention speech helped her learn more about the man she planned to vote for in November.

"The convention helped me to get to know him a little bit better, Bender said, adding "I learned a lot."

Democrats quickly hit back at Romney's speech, calling his campaign promises empty, with Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith labeling them "the same failed policies that crashed our economy and devastated the middle class in the first place and are promises the middle class just can’t afford."

Introducing Romney in a red golf shirt with the Cincinnati Reds logo on it, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman also used a sports metaphor, this time a baseball one, to praise the GOP ticket:

"So Cincinnati, what about those Red Legs," Portman asked. "Last night the team that has won the most games in baseball has won again, with a home run by Jay Bruce ... I see another world series title coming to Cincinnati folks! And here's what else I see: with a home run by Mitt Romney at the Republican convention, I see the Romney/Ryan team going all the way to the White House."

Here is how THAT speech went:

Romney to crowd: "Now, I can't tell you the specifics of our campaign, but you do know that you owe us, the wealthy, further tax cuts, to blackmail us into providing menial jobs for you, the peasants. We don't owe you any benefits, and we will ignore those pesky 40 hr. week laws, as well as gut any leave you might be entitled to for family emergencies.

You will be honored to pay your due to us, the owners of this nation. My job is to make sure that the deed is signed over to us, the 1 %, and I will make that job one of my Presidency."

Mitt is full of @!$%#t. All he's doing is piggy-backing on what O has done, or what the Econ people have already predicted. The rest of his platform is nothing more than throwing meat at the RWNJ's in the form of wedge issues and falacious nonsense. And as far as Ryan, he's a complete joke.

When united, Americans can do almost anything. Divided, as we are now, we do nothing but tear each others' throats out. Congratulations, you lot, for being part of the problem. Your hatred will finish the job of pulling our society apart.

But I'm sure no one cares about that. It's only important that your team wins.

You don't say? Come on... democrats saying this? Noooooooooo!!!

They've been saying this for years... so what's new about that? Democrats need only to look at their own party leader for empty campaign promises... Once they can say that Obama kept his promises about reducing the deficit by half, Lowering the oceans and closing Gitmo... they can say anything about Romney they want.

Mitt Romney, 9/1/12: "This is a time for us to come together as a nation. We do not have to have the kind of divisiveness and bitterness and recriminations we've seen over the last four years. I will bring us together."

Hmm, why does that ring a bell?

George W. Bush, 2/29/2000: "No, I don't view -- I'm a uniter, not a divider. I don't believe there's a deep
divide. As a matter of fact, when you look at the results amongst Republicans who are voting in the primaries, I'm winning overwhelmingly, and -- which means it's going to be easy to unite our party and lead us to victory. It's been my record. It's what I've done as governor. I know how to unite people. I don't like the politics of pitting one group of people against another, the politics of pointing fingers. I like that politics advocated by somebody like Ronald Reagan, who was a uniter. He didn't stand up and pit groups of people against each other. He didn't have a spiteful agenda, he had an optimistic agenda, as do I."

Look, can we just for once stop arguing about who "unites" people better than who? People are united or divided because they CHOOSE to be. We support a candidate - or a President - because we choose to believe that he is working in our best interests. And we have a million different self interests that are for the most part diametrically opposed to what those on the other side what.

Romney has spent the last four years spending hundreds of millions of dollars attacking the choice that the majority of his fellow Americans made. He's engaged in "the politics of pointing fingers" on a daily basis - but it's not just the President that he's been so spiteful towards. When he attacks the President that the majority of his fellow Americans elected and still support, he is attacking us all personally too. He's telling us that WE are wrong, that WE don't love our country, that WE don't know what's best for it, that OUR beliefs are wrong, OUR values are wrong, and that he plans to repeal or overturn or otherwise discard everything WE worked so hard to accomplish.

So tell me, Mr. Romney......why should we believe you're going to turn around and "unite" us once you're elected? How exactly is that going to work? Will OUR values matter any more to you once you're elected?

Of course they won't. I kind of agree with AG99 above - at this point, I have serious doubts that even another history-changing event like putting a man or the moon or another 9/11 would be able to unite this country. But Mitt Romney can. Just because he's Mitt Romney.

Somehow I suspect it's going to take a lot more.

Ryan caught in another lie … will it ever end

Paul Ryan's campaign walked back comments the VP nominee made about running a marathon.

"I had a two hour and fifty-something" marathon, Ryan said last week an interview. "I hurt a disc in my back, so I don’t run marathons anymore."

But the Ryan campaign confirmed to Runner's World that he has only run one marathon, the 1990 Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, which he finished in just over 4 hours.

Is he a pathological liar

Mitt Romney and the rest of the Republicans served us a "Convention" full of "nostalgia". Oh Yeah! Let's see: Let's bring the country back to those happy days when black kids have their own schools, and black people had to keep their "rightful" place: as servants and cooks.

Let's bring those happy days when women were "nice" and stayed at home, cooked dinners and sprayed roaches with DDT. Let's bring those happy days, at the beginning of the century, when we first started drilling for oil, and everybody was really happy. Let's bring back the old days when the Russians were the enemy, and we were building a lot of weapons, and have a contest to see who had more.

The Republicans have been in coma since Ronald Reagan. They totally "forgot" that the former President of 8 years brought the country to their knees. They forgot all the "good" that Sarah Palin brought to the party and, of course, they forgot Dick Cheney!

Global warming is just a liberal invention to block progress, abortion is killing humans, welfare is for lazy blacks, women only get raped if they ask for it, and then they deserve it, However, if woman repent they won't get pregnant. Jesus was hanging out with dinosaurs, etc. etc.

I'm curious to see how Mitt works the leveraged buyout of the U.S. economy. I know who's going to profit from it (Mitt's SuperPAC donors), and I know who's going to suffer and pay for it (99% of the American people), but how does he plan on pulling it off? Most of his leveraged buyouts at Bain resulted in huge profits for Mitt and Bain; and pain, layoffs, and bankruptcies for the target acquisitions. Job creation? Only for more accountants to launder Mitt's profits overseas.

Pretty much the only thing Romney is relying on at this point is a combination of winning the bigoted/racist white vote, and suppressing the vote of minorities and the poor.

I think that he is strongly counting on the supression of votes, and he wants all his red neck audience to make sure that they know that he is a hateful red neck as well. He even went as far as mocking one of the most serious problems of humanity: The raising sea levels.

That is the typical comment of ASININE, IGNORANT PEOPLE: Global warming is a hoax.

You deserved it because during these years, you worked harder than ever before. You deserved it because when it cost more to fill up your car, you cut out movie nights and put in longer hours. Or when you lost that job that paid $22.50 an hour with benefits, you took two jobs at 9 bucks an hour and fewer benefits.

This is actually quite simple.

There are about 1 million fewer people working now than when Obama took office, according to the official government Bureau of Labor Statistics. The total employment at the end of December 2008 (last figures available before Obama took office) was 134,379,000 people working. After more than 3.5 years under Obama, it is only 133,302,000 (July 2012 estimate). And remember that there are about 6.7 million net new workers that have entered the working age group, so when we compare current unemployment on the same basis used for Bush, the actual Unemployment Rate has increased from 7.6% when Bush left office to about 12.4%.

At some point, despite his empty rhetoric, most people will have to admit that OBAMA HAS BEEN A FAILURE.

So, you feel the president deserves a second term NOT because of what his accomplishments are, but rather because you don't like the way another person sounds.

Wow!! What an intelligent way to decide how the leader of this country should be chosen. Do us all a favor and don't vote. You aren't mature enough to.

It can't be Michael. Bev is just too damn funny. GOP Lies and Distortions is some other liberal player around here who has chosen another name. It's probably best for you to put GOP on ignore like I did... this way you don't have to read nonsense spread all over the boards... there are some liberals that are worth arguing with... Ditto - I kept track some time back and the Liberal comments accounted for about 85% of the total, so it's fun to 'tweak their noses' with some real facts - their typical response is something like 'but the Huffington Post says......' and then they pretend that it must be true.

By the way - if it's true that Liberals are 'smart', then why was it that Obama won the vote among high school dropouts by a margin of 63% for Obama vs only 35% for McCain - according to the N Y Times? Also, msnbc must have gotten such a bad reputation for being partisan that they had to change to NBCNEWS - but their partisanship hasn't changed one iota.

It's funny that Mitt would use Zero and 23 million for President Obama's record. It must have been some sort of Freudian slip.

For the ten withheld years of taxes he continues to hide, those numbers are very significant to his yearly returns:

Zero represents what he paid in taxes.

$23 million represents what he should have paid each year.

Try this on boys and girls. Someone noted that during bushes first term we experienced job loss and our economy began failing during his second. Yep You got it right. Now the fun part. Do you know why that happened ? You all do understand that normally not much good is felt from a sitting Presidents policy until his second term and beyond right. It's not like when we go buy a new car and enjoy it right away.

President Clinton and Al Gore had a vision that America should not be a major manufacturing nation but rather a service oriented nation. Al Gore wanted the polution to go elsewhere. To accomplish this NAFTA and other trade agreements were signed and just as Ross Perot said during his campain, the " giant sucking sound of our jobs leaving " sponsored by our own government to ship work overseas to China ,India and Mexico ect. to top that off as our good paying jobs were leaving loan restrictions were eased because Clinton wanted EVERYONE to own a home and could borrow up to 125% of the homes over appraised value because no one was overseeing this process.

So just as Bill Clinton experienced the good fiscal practices of the Republicans during his first term and beginning of his second, Bush got to experience the poor polices of the Clinton years plus the 9/11 attacks that shut down the market. Jobs were gone. People couldn't afford to make house payments and the recession began. Not because of Bushes policies but those of the Democratic President Bill Clinton.Once you folks learn to look beyond the here and now and look at the root causes of our problems you will see with a more balanced opinion not what you currently see with partyline blinders on

Is Romney the best for the job ? I don't think so. Is Obama the right man for the job? I KNOW he isn't and he has proven he isn't. I Voted for President Obama in 2008. I will not make that error in judgment again.

Rightwing lemmings STILL in denial of their ReTHUG overlords lies when even FAUX news couldn't even fathom them anymore, and couldn't hide the facts. The GOPers can crammed only so much lies in someone's throat without that person puking it back out or burst!

Republicans have blocked EVERY SINGLE jobs bill because if Americans suffer long enough, it helps Romney. This has been the ultimate goal of the RNC when Jaba the HutRush LimPburger ORDERED them to make Obama fail.

Here is a correction to another lie by the right. Seniors pay attention.

Obama cut $700 billion in wasteful spending from Medicare without touching the benefits, extending the life of the program until 2024, and used the savings to lower seniors' drug bills and give them preventative care without co-pays.

Yet another correction: Ryan's shamless lie about the autoworkers,

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/08/31/1126591/-Janesville-Auto-Workers-Slam-Paul-Ryan-on-Ed-Show

As for the QUESTIONABLE story of Mitt's dad giving his mom a rose everyday. This is the same story I heard from a visiting priest in our church early this year. His sermon was of his grandfather giving his grandmother a rose everyday, and when he pass away, members of the family took over and gave a rose to the granmother until she passed away. Am sure there are a number of loving husbands doing this for their wives. BUT WHY ARE WE JUST NOW HEARING THIS??? Wouldn't this have been told already about George Romney's biographers or something? Did Mitt's writers just made this up? And being that Mitt is such a pathological liar he can play the acting part? Sorry, this is just not cutting it. And to all my fellow women folk, please don't buy into this! Regardless if his father bought his mother a rose or not, this does NOT change how Romney really treat the women folks here in this country. His queen Ann and the women in HIS own family maybe, but for us - the Repuglicans WAR ON WOMENS RIGHTS IS STILL ON!!

The greedy obstructionist party of NO, will continue their shameless and bullish ways to lie about facts, and CON the American people to vote for them. This is not only disrepect to Obama, but to the ALL the American people. Do they really thing people to be that stupid not to see that?! They must have very low opinions of their mentally challenge rightwing lemmings base!!! Reminds me of the "LoveFool" song of the Cardigans. Yeah fool me, fool me....... and we saw a lot of foolish people at the RNC convention!

So this November show Republicans what you think of their UNPATRIOTIC TACTICS.

This November, show the ReTHUGLICANS what you think of their lies and hypocrisy!!

Do NOT allow yourselves to be fooled!

VOTE DEMOCRATS! VOTE FOR OBAMA!

"I love these Repubs blaming Clinton for what happened on Bush's watch. Now Dems aren't allowed to blame economy or anything else that happened before Jan. 2009 on Bush."

  • Republicans have a very short memory. From 1976 to 1992 you whined and cried, moan and groaned and complained and complained more and bitched, carried on and on and blamed President Carter of everything wrong in the entire universe. Then from 1992 to 2008 you whined and cried, moan and groaned and complained and complained more and bitched, carried on and on and blamed President Clinton for everything that was wrong in the entire universe. So – using the standard you set – the left has another 29 years to blame Bush for everything just to pull even with you.

In politics as in business, Romney is ready to accept the fruits of others' hard work.

What is Amazing is the effective numbers of Americans who have been
Conned/Fooled by the republicanCrimeCartelPropagandaMachine. Think about it...
These Very Well monied, SnakeOil Saleman, MittTaxPittanceRommel and his SideAssKick, Eddie Munster, are The Elitist Thugs Contolling and Manipulating America in their favor, ACTUALLY Stealing America's economic power. Research it: These Republican 1-10% wealthy and corporate Thieves have OVER $20 Trillion Dollars Stashed in Overseas accounts in their names and registration numbers. Money needed for rebuilding America NOT Bloating their elitist "family wealth" for the future of their "Little Darlings" SUCH AS Rommels $48,000,000 Malibu Mansion WITH an InHouse Car Elevator for his son's $180,000 Ferrari.
Try this one on for size: President Harry Truman in 1948: "The Republicans … will try to make people believe that everything the Government has done for the country is socialism. They will go to the people and say: "Did you see that social security check you received the other day—you thought that was good for you, didn't you? That's just too bad! That's nothing in the world but socialism. Did
you see that new flood control dam the Government is building over there for the
protection of your property? Sorry—that's awful socialism! That new hospital that they are building is
socialism. Price supports, more socialism for the farmers! Minimum wage laws? Socialism for labor! Socialism is bad for you, my friend. Everybody knows that. And here you are, with your new car, and your home, and better opportunities for the kids, and a television set—you are just surrounded by
socialism! Now the Republicans say, 'That's a terrible thing, my friend, and the
only way out of this sinkhole of socialism is to vote for the Republican ticket.'" And, AND!, AND!!! that was 64 Years Ago!!!. The republicanCrimeCartel
is still doing the same exploitation of people THEY ARE NOTORIUS FOR. BUT,
according toKingGeorgeTheVacuumBrained, it is called "free market" capitalism; with families in the streets and 25% Unemployment.......

Your comment would be relatatable if I were a Republican but i am not. So you shoot arrows into the air and hope to hit something. My comment was fatual but you fail to recognize it as such. It takes time for major policy to begin to work. But for many it is easier to not look deep enough to see the truth. this is a big reason we don't see much difference regardless which party has control of the White House. the fact is the President doesn't run the country Congress does and instead of focusing on the Presidential campain we cshould be focused on the real policy makers campains.

The housing bubble is the same scheme that has been done time and time again since the 1500's. Interestingly enough, each time it arises from the same republican arguments that we have today. Give the wealthy more money to stimulate the economy! Then the money is diverted into another scheme that ends up costing the taxpayers more money. Remember the savings and loan disaster in texas in the late 1980's - does it not occur to anyone that the same scam was perpetrated on the nation when bush became president??? The republicans rewrote the laws from texas that let the same thing happen to the nation. Now that is their platform for 2012??? Gee, I guess they are right! Americans are dumber than s&!$!!!

Only to be blocked by the republicans. They blocked these ideas for only one reason A CHANCE TO GET A REPUBLICAN elected to the presidency of the USA. If they passed all Obama plans, this country would be almost fully recovered or in way better shape then it is now. The republicans held us back and now try to blame the president.

Financial Firms Face Subpoenas on Tax Strategy

The New York attorney general is investigating whether some of the nation’s biggest private equity firms have abused a tax strategy in order to slice hundreds of millions of dollars from their tax bills, according to executives with direct knowledge of the inquiry. The attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, has subpoenaed more than a dozen firms seeking documents that would reveal whether they converted certain management fees into fund investments, which are taxed at a far lower rate than ordinary income.

Among the firms to receive subpoenas are Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company, TPG Capital, Sun Capital Partners, Apollo Global Management, Silver Lake Partners and Bain Capital, which was founded by Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee for president.

It is estimated that with the economy the way it is that 12 million new jobs will be created in the next 4 years.

By whom? Well, by Mitt Romney and his crack economic team. And you know them - they are the same ones who helped George W. Bush with his economic plan:

Romney economic adviser Glenn Hubbard apparently has a very short memory. ... It's puzzling that Hubbard doesn't remember this, considering that he was the chair of President George W. Bush's Council of Economic Advisors from 2001 to 2003.

So, it is not surprising that Romney's economic plan looks sooo much Bush's. So let's look at the record. 12 million new jobs in one term equates to an average 250,,000 a month. Bush, using the same policies managed to achieve that how much?

Well, the data is available from the BLS. Download the monthly jobs data and check it yourself. You'll find that Bush created 250,000 or more jobs a month for exactly 9 months out of his 8 years (96 months) in office. Less than 10% of the time.

Frankly, I don't think Romney will do even that good!

1 million more jobs were created in just the last 7 months than were created during President Bush’s entire first term, 48 months.

And yet, unemployment has been above 8.1% Obama's entire term (with close to two years above 9% and almost a year close to 10%)...and is going back up as of right now!. How can that possibly be with ALL these jobs created?

Oh, that's right, you forgot to mention how many jobs were lost. A simple oversight on your part, I'm sure.

So many buzzwords and false statements...so little time.

The "Blame Bush" mantra is still going strong, four years later, I see.

Obama himself said if he couldn't get it done in three years, he'd be a one-term president. What, you don't believe your own messiah when he says he should be voted out if he can't fix it?

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmRgaKfWMPA

Bush didn't get a "surplus" from Clinton, because a surplus can't exist when there's a huge national debt. Why is this so tricky for people to understand?

        http://www.politicalforum.com/budget-taxes/262592-clinton-surplus-myth.html

You liberals whine and kick and scream about the wars, but you conveniently forget the VERY SIMPLE fact that many of your democrat leaders VOTED for those wars. Yes, Harry Reid, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton ALL VOTED for those wars. In both the House, and even more so in the Senate, the democrats voted for it. Say it with me, the democrats voted for it.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Resolution

You might be too young (and are certainly too stupid) to remember Jimmy Carter. He got a real bad economy because of OPEC's little embargo in the 70's. And just like Obama, things went from bad to worse. Unemployment went through the roof, inflation/stagflation were rampant and loan interest sky-rocketed.

The difference between the two administrations is that people had brains back then and could see failure staring them in the face, unlike today. Back then Carter didn't blame everyone around him past and present, because if he had, he would have been laughed off the planet. However, not only is Obama not laughed at, the press and mentally challenged people like you allow him to NOT accept any responsibility whatsoever for the economy, even when he himself claimed at the beginning of his administration that if he couldn't "get it done" he deserved to be a one-term president.

Can any of you Obama apologists give me a time-frame as to when it WILL be Obama's economy, if four years isn't enough? When he gets voted out in November, will your claim be that Obama was the only president never to be be responsible for the economy?

It is beyond hypocritical of the GOP to continue to point to the successes of the US human spaceflight program and the technological advances from it that we continue to receive today. This is the same party that slashed the Apollo program even as the first moon landing was taking place. They repeatedly underfunded programs like ISS and the Space Transportation System (Space Shuttle) whenever there was an opportunity. And most recently have mercilessly attacked the development of US commercial space businesses while insisting on diverting funding to boondoggles such as SLS because they keep the gravy trains running through the districts of powerful Republican senators and congressmen (e.g. Shelby, Hatch, and Hutchinson). Just go back and listen to the (snarky) response of their presidential candidate when he attacked Newt Gingrich in the Florida debates for mentioning a well-known and vetted plan for US commercial and scientific development of the moon. His answer was that he would fire anyone for presenting a plan like that to him; yet he'll stand there and take a bow for something that the nation did that was far riskier and cost far more in the funding at that time. What an idiot and a fraud.... and his handlers are just as stupid for letting him do it.

When the two campaigns were recently given the opportunity to express their views about the future of the US space program; the Obama campaign responded immediately, answered the questions to multiple media outlets, laid out their roadmap - which is based on developing more US commercial space businesses while assigning NASA more deep-space missions, and sent representatives for additional follow up. The Romney campaign finally came back with his plan to "form a committee and relook at this". You can see the latest on this here: http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-08-31/news/os-romney-nasa-policy-20120831_1_romney-administration-romney-first-mitt-romney.

There are some SLS / Constellation proponents that are very unhappy with the current NASA approach to cancel their pet design, but the bulk of the US aerospace industry is excited to see a way to move forward faster. At least we have an affordable, sustainable plan that doesn't bust the budget like SLS did/does I sincerely hope that we can continue to make progress at the rate we've seen in the last few years. If for no other reason, this is a good enough one for not voting that idiot M.T. Suit (Romney) into office. How good a manager could he really be, if this is how he approaches one of the key technology areas in our country?

The Office of the Presidency is better under Obama's control to benefit the great multitude of the Middle Class.

This is a fight worth every ounce of the strength of the Democrats and the Middle Class in stopping Mitt the Vulture from succeeding.

It takes alot of time repair the damage from

Sorry, every recession and depression except the great depresssion and this recession rebounded within 4 years of the initial collapse point back to the employment level before the decline.

Unemployment October 6, 2008 was 6.1%, we are at 8.2%

The reason we were so extended in the great depression and this depression is because democrats took over the government because of the crash and overregulated, causing people to hang on to what they had instead of investing in new ventures. All other Recoveries, such as 1921-23; 1961 - 1964; 1981 - 1984, 2002 - 2005, all were about cutting taxes, and cutting regulations.

        For those who don't understand polls, there is a Democratic bias of about 4% in polls of Registered Voters because history shows that Republicans are much more likely to vote. For an explanation, consider the following link;

And just like Obama, things went from bad to worse. Unemployment went through the roof, inflation/stagflation were rampant and loan interest sky-rocketed.

The problem with this idea is that under Obama, things haven't gotten bad to worse. We lost 4 million jobs the year before Obama took office, and another four million jobs in his first six months. Since then, we have been slowly clawing our way back. Unemployment is going down, but since the Federal government also keeps laying off workers, unlike the way we behaved in other recessions, we are not recovering as fast as we like. You can thank the small-governmenters for that.

Beyond that, though, consumer sentiment is slowly improving, the market is up about 80% since the time Obama took office. So no, things could be a lot better, but the good thing is that we have turned the corner and are headed up.

The Republicans' big problem is that they HAVE to win this election. Otherwise people will start to realize beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is the sort of policies liberals and Obama favor that are good for the country.

Hey Numbskull, those were not Bush policies that led to the melt-down. Clinton gutted the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 and replaced it with Risk-Based Deregulation and sub-primes. This is what led to the melt-down.

Clinton also signed NAFTA which is the mother of all out-sourcing.

The government didn't build the space program.

Actually, the government did. Or are you going to try to pretend that Neil Armstrong was a private employee?

The scientists, etc., were all direct government employees and were hired by NASA. If you want to learn more about did this, you can read up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun

Private industry was not involved. In general, our current setup is indeed inefficient. That is because we outsource most of our government functions to private contractors. If you want to look at what we are capable of achieving if we keep private industry out of it, just look at the moon shots or WWII. On the other hand, if you want to see what happens when private industry gets involved in government functions, look at Blackwater.

Ann Romney Tuesday: "We got married and moved into a basement apartment. We walked to class together, shared the housekeeping, and ate a lot of pasta and tuna fish."

Ann Romney in 1994: When Mitt Romney was running for Senate in 1994, his wife gave a candid interview with Jack Thomas of The Boston Globe, published October 20, 1994. She told Thomas that after their Hawaii honeymoon, Mitt transferred to Brigham Young University. Back then, she still thought of that time as tough. But she wasn't as good at describing it, suggesting that it was rough living off stock options:

"They were not easy years. You have to understand, I was raised in a lovely neighborhood, as was Mitt, and at BYU, we moved into a $62-a-month basement apartment with a cement floor and lived there two years as students with no income... Neither one of us had a job, because Mitt had enough of an investment from stock that we could sell off a little at a time."

60's vet--you DO know that there is a DIFFERENCE between letting a company (in this case GM) DIE, and letting it go into BANKRUPTCY?

A company that goes through a bankruptcy is FORCED to change the bad things it was doing that caused it to get into trouble financially. You know--like only building gas guzzlers that most of the 99 % cannot really afford? Or like paying benefits to the union workers that cannot be sustained? Or even (and I'll say this, the bail out DID take a stab at lowering wages of top mangement) cutting salaries and workers?

Bain Capital took 80% of the companies it took over (ALL of which were in trouble financially and already in danger of going belly up) and made changes, and turned them into successful businesses.

If Bain were a baseball player, or a teacher, or a small business, you'd say they were a tremendous success.

So do the people who WORK for the companies that Bain saved.

However, Bain did NOT take the money that individuals had invested into those companies, and hand it to the labor unions to bail out the union pension funds.

And just to be CLEAR--many of those who had invested in GM were teachers, nurses, plumbers, etc. (thru THEIR union) and shop owners, and little old ladies like me. You know, the 99%.

I respond--sorry, but my parents and grandparents gave me stock as a kid--one share at a time, for birthdays and Christmas, all AT&T (which they considered SAFE) and a couple of years after the Ex and I got married, we used that to buy a used Volkswagon so I could have a car to go to work.

The fact that Mitt had "an investment in stock that they could sell off a little at a time" does NOT mean they were wealthy.

It meant that his parents/grands SAVED and invested for his college. You might try doing that for YOUR kids. And PS--that AT&T stock was bought for about what my parents might have spent on a normal birthday present. They put a little away out of each paycheck to save up for the once a year outlay.

                You might try THAT too.

Ann Romney 2012: "I saw the long hours that started with that first job. I was there when he and a small group of friends talked about starting a new company. I was there when they struggled and wondered if the whole idea just wasn't going to work. Mitt's reaction was to work harder and press on."

The Real Romney, by Michael Kranish and Scott Helman: At Bain & Company, founder Bill Bain treated Romney "as a kind of prince regent at the firm, a favored son." He selected Romney to start and run Bain Capital. "It would be Romney’s first chance to run his own firm and, potentially, to make a killing," they write. "It was an offer few young men in a hurry could refuse. Yet Romney stunned his boss by doing just that." They continue:

Irespond - that was the opinion of the writer of the article, not a fact. You really need to learn the difference.

If you talked to my Wife's co-workers, they would call her the favored one in the company. That actual fact is she does her job well, and they don't. Businesses only survive if they give the work to the people who get the work done well. That is not favoritism, it is smart business.

Or maybe there is no official scope of her job, and she tends to stick around "off the clock" just to help out, or she will not ask for a raise during this economy , or she doesn't have the children to look after, or freeloader husband(?). Your analogy is filled with Mitttisiism's, nothing there and hard to prove wrong. Outstanding! Now we get to hear how the Romney/Ryan policies are exactly like GWBush's that led us into recession. I wonder how long they believe they can sell the snake-oil that tax cuts for wealthy folks brings everyone prosperity. We've tried that approach(several times)...it failed(several times)....which led to Obama's inaugeration in 2009. I'm also looking forward to seeing what type of calculator they use to say they will 'balance the budget' while giving huge tax breaks to the wealthy and also building up the military...oh yeah, now they even claim they're going to save Medicare (ha ha).

Let's see the GOP completely controlled congress and the WH from 2000-2006 and the WH to 2008 which was the build up and culmination of the biggest recession in 80 years. Do they actually think we have forgotten that?

Obama has been given 3 1/2 years to completely stop, reverse trend, and build the economy that was in free fall. It is ludicrous to think that a global recession of such a nature could be completely wiped away in a little over 3 years...no rational thinking individual thinks that way.

I guess I look at it this way.....the GOP was given 8 years to completely screw up the economy and our standing in the world. We should at least give Obama 8 years to try and clean up the GOP mess.

Facts, logic etc. seem to be secondary (for some) in today's political culture.

Doctor Logic--sorry, but what I remember of the economy crashing was the HOUSING market. And Bush, for all his warts, (and I certainly never voted for him) didn't have ANYTHING to do with that.

Now, if you want to talk about Bush fighting two unfunded wars, GOOD. I didn't like that and said so with disgusting regularity.

However, Obama has been running up the 'unfunding' at nearly TWICE the rate BUSH did. WHY would you approve of THAT when you didn't approve of it when Shrub did it?

And sorry, but since the 60's the Dems have been pushing banks to loan money to buy houses to people who really had no business doing so. Did the pubs fight that hard enough? Nope, but they occasionally tried.

The fact is, the Dems want banks to loan money to people who are a poor risk, and then if the person fails to pay, the bank should be forced to 'eat that' loss. And it doesn't work that way.

Hard to argue with someone so clueless. Amazing that anyone can hold someone who had been president for eight years blameless for something and then hold a new president at fault for everything there after even when it's under the old presidents budget.

Sorry to enlighten you but even when you blame congress for passing bills you have to blame the president who signs them unless he vetos them and nothing to do with housing passed by congress was vetoed by Bush.

Obama didn't bail out the banks Bush did. You don't even know who did what. Ever here of TARP? It was a Bush plan passed by congress on Oct. 3rd, 2008 which was 3 1/2 months before Obama was sworn in.

Only a third of Americans (34%) correctly say the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was enacted by the Bush administration. Nearly half (47%) incorrectly believe TARP was passed under President Obama. Another 19% admit they do not know which president signed the bank bailout into law. Notably, there is no partisan divide on the question. Just 36% of Republicans, 35% of independents and 34% of Democrats know that the government bailout of banks and financial institutions was signed into law by former President Bush. And Democrats (46%) are just as likely as Republicans (50%) to say TARP was passed under Obama.

How are so many people misinformed about the TARP "bailout"? It's not just Fox-watching Republicans (who are often grossly misinformed by the channel) but Democrats as well. Doesn't anybody check their facts anymore? Or do people just choose the facts that support the narrative they want to believe? Bush bailed out the banks and fueled the greatest Recession in generations. Why blame it all on the guy trying to clean up his mess?

"...the Dems have been pushing banks to loan money to buy houses......"

Yea, right.......and the banks fought that tooth and nail by selling those mortgages to firms like Goldman Sachs, all the while recording record profits as they shifted the risk. Rationalizing their greed by saying that real estate would never drop in value in the "boom-boom" economy of the 1990s.

Goldman Sachs then bundled those mortgages and sold them as investment grade, with the help of Moody's and Standard & Poors, all the paying out record bonus's and covering the risk by insuring their product if it failed through AIG.

Then the "boom-boom" economy staggered, and foreclosures dropped property values into a continuing death spiral.

No, the banks were not innocent pawns of the "ebil Guberment", they were willing accomplices because the profits and bonus's were too good. Each and every one of those banks had the option not to play, to get out of the mortgage business altogether.

But they didn't, because the gravy train was just rolling down the tracks full steam.

They chose to stay and play, taking the money and shifting the risk to the next guy up the investment chain. And when the music stopped playing, everyone "too big to fail" without a chair got taxpayer money to make them whole again from Secretary of the Treasury Paulson, not Obama.

Reward without risk, no wonder the banks stay and play.

                CPO,

You don't know the half of it. The loans were bundled and sent to any investors by the original mortgage writers. They are the ones who initially sold the bad loans as good. Goldman Sachs was a middle man who bought them, and re-sold them to investors. At some point Goldman Sachs had to know they were getting and selling bad loans. Converting mortgages to securities has been done for years. Home mortgages have long been considered solid investiments. What was new was they were no longer a good investment.

Goldman Sachs wasn't the only one doing this selling bad loans, so were some of the Big Banks. Big banks make very few FHA type loans, only the federally mandated minimum. Why Citi, BoA, and Chase had so many was they either bought bundled loans AND bought mortgage service companies that already bought l loans from Mortgage making companies. Some of the big banks caught on to the deceptions and then joined in playing hot potato by trying to unload them.

When he was elected he took the bull by the horns and has done and is doing all that he can for the economy. What's sad are the people who don't take any responsibility for their own mess! I know people who re-fied almost every time you turned around and used their houses as glorified ATMS. Whatever happened to having a down payment when you buy a home? What were the banks thinking when they allowed 100% financing and in some cases, poor credit history? President Obama is responsible for some people's poor choices? I don't think so. He didn't promise that he was going to fix the mess that a lot of us contributed to, overnight. I think a lot of people would do well to look to themselves and what they may have done to be in the financial straights that some people are in.

Nevada will be history if there is another 4 more.

12% unemployment, housing market destroyed, food prices skyrocketed...NEVADA CANNOT TAKE ANYMORE OF OBUMMER HOPE AND CHANGE.

I don't think Florida can ither. 8.6% unemployment(higher than the national average) NUMBER ONE IN FORECLOSURERS IN THE NATION.

                    Missy,

Actually, Obama did promise to fix the mess that was created. He got dealt a bad hand for sure. However, whatever the reason, whatever the excuses, he has not been able to right the ship. He has been devisive as he promotes his class warfare garbage. That much is clear.

He tried but as was clear before the last election, he just did not have the qualifications to to fix the problems he inheritied. In fact, he made them worse. Not his fault. But this is what should be expected when we vote in a junior senator and community organizer as the POTUS.

And he broke promises. The one that ffries me the most is that he promised to close Gitmo down in year 1 of his term. We know how that has turned out. Heck, he does not even talk about closing it now--four years into his term. I can only conclude that he supports torture down there. So very sad.

You can always open more casinos. Nevada's REAL source of income is gambling and prostitution. Real GOP "values" when the wife isn't watching.

Once you get out of Vegas, there aren't even lizards that like that sinkhole.

victor - Congress (some Democrats and most Republicans) directly blocked the funding required to shut it down. So now of course the President is being blamed by some for "breaking a promise" on Gitmo. Yep, now that makes lots of sense . . . not!

                      Matthew,

I see. It is somebody elses fault that it is not going to close down. If that is the case, then why did he promise to close it down in year one? Certainly he must have known how Congress worked (well, maybe he didn't).

I can only conclude that he either did not know how Congress worked or he lied when he committed to it. Either way, it is inexcusable that it is still open given his promises. Or, maybe he supports torture. I really do not know what his excuse is. I do know one thing though: he clearly had no intention of ever closing it down. That much is plain as day at this point.

Let's not forget, it was HIS committment to close it down. NOBODY elses. If he thought he had a potential opportunity to shut it down, that is what he should have said. Not that he would shut it down when he had no guarantee that he could.

In other words, lets face it: he flat out lied to us on that one. Period.

There were only two cities that stepped forward to take the trials. New York and Chicago. Chicago, backed out. After New York understood that the fed reimbursement was in adequate, they didn't want any more either.

What is inexcusable is even bringing these people onto our shores.

It was when Monica Mehta defended the risk-taking of conservatives -- the rich investors, the business owners, the 'job creators' -- that MHP really let her have it. Melissa's point was that the risks taken by the rich, who enjoy multiple layers of protection, do not even compare to the risks taken by the poor who are just trying to not get shot in a bad neighborhood, who try to find a decent school for their kids. Considering the case of Mitt Romney in particular, whose company never seemed to risk or lose anything,

It is sad that Republicans often only have to put the 'shiny object' in front of the electorate to get elected. They talk of "freedom" and "opportunity"....if you're people like Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan who were born into millions.....then, heck yeah, you have all sorts of freedoms and opportunity. If you're poor, financail freedom and opportunity is nearly non-existent.

"he created his own job . . . " Facts seem to disagree with this.

In 1977 he was hired by Bain and Company, a management consultant firm.

In 1983 Bill Bain offered Romney the chance to head a new venture firm, Bain Capitol.

Nope - Mitt Romney "didn't build that" by himself.

My God, the conservative blogosphere and media would be split-screening Obama on one side making the comment along with the people's homes in La. being flooded on the other.

How can Romney say such unfeeling, horrible things and get away with it? That "joke" was nearly as obtuse as the birther comment last week.

The teabaggers were stupid to have their convention in Tampa? LOL. The fact is hurricanes never hit Tampa because it is shielded from hurricanes on the west coast of Florida.

One week later, the Dems are going to Charlotte. AWKWARD. This is the worst possible place for the Dems to have their convention for several reasons.

                          1. Obama barely eked out a win in 2008 with 0.3%. The state is definitely returning to red.
                          2. The unemployment rate in NC has been climbing ever since Obama took office, 10% almost every year.
                          3. This is one of the most student-populated states with the Research Triangle area universities, and they are not all that excited about hope and change.
                          4. Finally, the disgraced Democrat governor of the state has pulled out of the 2012 election in spite of the party urging her to run. After 2012, there may not by another female Democrat governor while the Republicans have four female governors.

Maybe Obama will hope to sprinkle some of his "Rock Star' magic during the Convention to guantee a win for this state in November. The only problem is the magic is gone now that he has a record to run on. Sorry Obama, not this time!

                          Road....

Actually, I disagree that having the convention in Tampa was a bad idea....Florida is an important swing state the Republicans MUST win; if they lose Florida they are almost certain to lose.

What WAS stupid was having the "we built it" convention in a center that was built by government funds and union workers! Gee, you think the Dems might make a little hay over that little detail.

I also disagree with the fact that having it in NC....recently, NC has swung in Obama's direction. You should read recent polls...NC is hardly "turning red" as you state.

All that aside...the RNC will be remembered for several things.....one, that Paul Ryan delievered a completely factless, baseless speech. That is precisely the opposite of the aura they tried to build around Ryan as the smart, tell-it-like-it-is guy. He has completely lost that aura now. Then there is stupid lies like when he told Runner's World he completed his last marathon in less than 3 hours....which is better than world class speed. He's backtracked on that now...but what a stupid lie?! It is stuff like that that will resonate with the completely disassociated voter.

Plus, you have the Clint Eastwood fiasco.....between now and the election, you'll see clips of a senile old Eastwood talking down to and disrespecting a fake Obama. That's all the GOP needs....another senile old man talking down to a person of color. Great optics! (sarcasm)

Problem is Dee that the GOP failed to provide a reasonable alternative. Unlike your crew, people don't hate Obama....they know he was dealt a nearly impossible hand to play. While they may be disappointed about where we are...the plurality doesn't blame Obama. A recent poll still blames Bush for the economy by 20 points over Obama. Plus, when asked Obama vs. Congress....people realize congress has been useless and they give Obama a break...there's a reason congress has a 10% approval rating.

As far as Obama's performance with Congress, Romney will have to make the case that it is Obama's leadership failure that had a role to play with this do nothing Congress, his inablility to work with both sides and divide the parties even further in dreadlock. ROmney as Governor worked with an 85% Democratic legislature and balanced the budget and left his state with a surplus. He will work with a divided Congress as President because he has done it successfully as Governor. Obama will do nothing different!

You can place blame, cite circumstances or where the candidates stand on specific issues, but you can only make one conclusion from the poll question “Is the nation going in the right direction?”

Two separate polls have 63% saying we are not on the right track. Nobody who answered that question “wrong track” will vote for the incumbent.

Doctor, you know this small anemic growth we are seeing does not keep up with population growth and where we need to be. Yes, there is small growth in jobs (even though I have questions on where the growth is) but you can not credit Obama's policies for this anemic growth we are seeing. It is the market's natural progression that is doing this as it has done historically during bad times. I will be surprised if you can name one pro business policy from Obama that has contributed to job job growth! Sorry, I just can't credit him for this one. We should do better, certainly not with Obama's anti business policies and his increased hatred for big businesses.

Yes, 4 years ago, people would run to see "Rock Star" Obama but now as our economic situation worsens with unemployment lingering over 8%, people struggling for jobs and our growing historic debt, I don't think people would be running this time to listen to him, don't count on it!

The following is an excerpt from the Huffington Post by Sam Stein on a great book written by Robert Draper, detailing a meeting of some republicans, to plot and plan that President Obama would not be successful and therefore the country would fail. You will note that the Republican current nominee, Paul Ryan, was in attendance and like the rest there had no intention then or since of doing anything to help the President help the country and our citizens:

                          www.huffingtonpost.com/.../robert-draper-anti-obama-campai..

WASHINGTON -- As President Barack Obama was celebrating his inauguration at various balls, top Republican lawmakers and strategists were conjuring up ways to submarine his presidency at a private dinner in Washington.

The event -- which provides a telling revelation for how quickly the post-election climate soured -- serves as the prologue of Robert Draper's much-discussed and heavily-reported new book, "Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives."

According to Draper, the guest list that night (which was just over 15 people in total) included Republican Reps. Eric Cantor (Va.), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Paul Ryan (Wis.), Pete Sessions (Texas), Jeb Hensarling (Texas), Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) and Dan Lungren (Calif.), along with Republican Sens. Jim DeMint (S.C.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), John Ensign (Nev.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.). The non-lawmakers present included Newt Gingrich, several years removed from his presidential campaign, and Frank Luntz, the long-time Republican wordsmith. Notably absent were Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) -- who, Draper writes, had an acrimonious relationship with Luntz.

For several hours in the Caucus Room (a high-end D.C. establishment), the book says they plotted out ways to not just win back political power, but to also put the brakes on Obama's legislative platform.

"If you act like you're the minority, you're going to stay in the minority," Draper quotes McCarthy as saying. "We've gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign."

The conversation got only more specific from there, Draper reports. Kyl suggested going after incoming Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner for failing to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes while at the International Monetary Fund. Gingrich noted that House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) had a similar tax problem. McCarthy chimed in to declare "there's a web" before arguing that Republicans could put pressure on any Democrat who accepted campaign money from Rangel to give it back.

The dinner lasted nearly four hours. They parted company almost giddily. The Republicans had agreed on a way forward:

Go after Geithner. (And indeed Kyl did, the next day: ‘Would you answer my question rather than dancing around it—please?’)

Show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies. (Eight days later, Minority Whip Cantor would hold the House Republicans to a unanimous No against Obama’s economic stimulus plan.)

Begin attacking vulnerable Democrats on the airwaves. (The first National Republican Congressional Committee attack ads would run in less than two months.)

Win the spear point of the House in 2010. Jab Obama relentlessly in 2011. Win the White House and the Senate in 2012.

"You will remember this day," Draper reports Newt Gingrich as saying on the way out. "You’ll remember this as the day the seeds of 2012 were sown."

Draper's timeline is correct. On Jan. 21, 2009, Kyl aggressively questioned Geithner during his confirmation hearings. On Jan. 28, 2009, House GOP leadership held the line against the stimulus package (Senate GOP leadership would prove less successful in stopping defections).

The votes, of course, can be attributed to legitimate philosophical objection to the idea of stimulus spending as well as sincere concern that the secretary of the Treasury should personally have a clean tax-paying record. But what Draper's book makes clear is that blunt electoral-minded ambitions were the animating force.

Whether or not that's shocking depends on the degree to which one's view of politics has been jaded. What's certainly noteworthy is the timing. When Mitch McConnell said in October 2010 that his party's primary goal in the next Congress was to make Obama a one-term president, it was treated as remarkably candid and deeply cynical. Had he said it publicly in January 2009, it would likely have caused an uproar.

By extension, however, the Draper anecdote also negatively reflects on the Obama administration for failing to appreciate how quickly congressional Republicans would oppose the president's agenda.

It is painful talking to you people....you all use the same rhetoric: you call Obama anti-business, however, the facts show Obama has CUT taxes for small businesses 18 times in his first term. Folks like you talk about "regulation" but never cite any specific regulations that should be cut.

You call yourself a "patriot" but you cannot do something as simple as argue a topic based on fact and merit. It is absolutely unpatriotic to continue to spew hatred and lies for pure politcial purposes. Your neighbors and friends deserve to have a country that exercises democracy by an informed electorate....not one that simply spew simple talking points.

Doctor, My definition of Democracy does not include taking wealth from one class and distributing it to another. Encouraging class warfare, pitting classes against each other and punishing success from hard work is not my definition of Democracy. A strong economy requires work and compromise from both classes, not encouraging more division and hatred. I wanted to believe 4 years ago during Obama's acceptance speech that he would unite the parties and bring us together but he let most of us down. Sorry if this does not feel like a Democracy. There has never been so much hate as I have seen in this administraion. Just my feelings....

Basically, you're admitting that facts don't matter it is all about perception. There is a historical figure that once said, "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." That seems to be what the GOP is operating by now.

BTW...the historical figure that said that line.......Joseph Goebbels who was the minister of propoganda of the Nazis.

                          Doc,

You got it. Most people can't even tell you who the VP or Speaker of the House is. They look at politics from their personal circumstances. They see the unemployment rate. They see their company not hiring and everyone talking at the water fountain about possible layoffs. They see gas prices. They see the debt. They see wars. They see the nation divided. They don't look too much into the details. They say things are not looking good. Let's give someone else a try. That's what happened in 2008.

BTW, why do you automatically assume the people who were polled based their answer solely on perception? You sure are high-minded. Maybe a person don’t think we are on the right track on social issues. Another person may based their answer on the debt. Another on the unemployment rate. Another on housing. Another on the wars. Regardless what they place their emphasis on, the bottom line is that is what is important to them when they vote.

Road Warrior--sorry, but I REGULARLY get polled, and the question is ALWAYS "Generally speaking, do you think that conditions in our country today are A) better than four years ago B) worse than four years ago, or C) about the same.

And note, many people TEND to vote for the 'first' item, and yet this question STILL gets 63 % who say 'worse'.

And that doesn't even COUNT the ones who said "about the same'', which is ALSO an indictment on this administration.

There is also a similar poll which replaces "in this country" with "in YOUR personal life" and it gets just about the same results.

NONE of the polls are even mentioning any of the other issues you raise. But if they did, I'd imagine the results are about the same. The debt is much worse, unemployment is basically unchanged, housing is still in the tank despite numerous 'predictions' that are mostly based on info REALTORS supply.

And like it or not, there are PUBS who are pro choice and pro gay rights (CLINT EASTWOOD, for one,) and there are DEMS who are AGAINST both (just look at CA's prop 8 for instance.

But most people do not base their vote on social issues.

To quote a former pol--"It's the ECONOMY, stupid."

First, you being polled "regularly" as you claim is not believable. Being one of 1,000 people out of a nation of 315 million selected randomly is against all odds. People saying the nation is on the wrong track is consistent with Obama's 45% job approval rating? I do agree most people don't vote on social issues. The economy is what they will based their vote. That's why the Dems concentrating on reproductive issues at the convention is a mistake. On who is better to handle the economy, Romney has a substantial lead.

I'd love to see what type of calculator you're using for that one! Any person with an ounce of common sense knows that what they are claiming is completely impossible....it isn't even close.

No one said balancing the budget was going to be easy given our situation today with the spiralling, out of control deficit we have inherrited under Obama. But what we do know is that the Obama administration has no intention of cutting the deficit. Obama presented 2 budgets, all of them shot down unanimously by both parties. We have not seen a budget in almost 4 years from this administration.

Romnney will cut the deficit by addressing entitlemnets which the Democratic party refuses to touch for obvious political reasons. Once Romney gets working on the economy and get it growing again to finally get people back to work, the budget could be balanced within 10 years. Under Obama, the deficit will continue to spiral out of control and any tax hikes to the rich (job creators) will not even put a dent into our deficit but will harm growth and creation of new jobs the middle class desperately need.

You are lying. Romney has no intention of cutting 'entitlements'.....he completely admits he wants to keep the entitlements to the oil industry.....he completely admits he wants to keep the entitlements to the health care industry.

If you actually think he is going to cut the deficit I ask you to read a paper. With the tax breaks he wants to give to the wealthy and corporations, it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to bring down the debt.

Here's some real numbers for you to chew on. The Obama "spending" binge is a myth....

The following are POLICY CHANGES instituted Bush and by Obama and their respective effect on the national debt:

                            http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/opinion/sunday/24sun4.html

                            Iraq/Afghanistan wars: $1.469T

                            Bush Tax Cuts: $1.812T

                            Non-defense discretionary spending: $608B

                            TARP/bailouts: $224B

                            Medicare Advantage/drug companies: $180B

2008 Stimulus and other changes: $773B

                            Obama: Total $1.44T

                            Stimulus/tax cuts: $711B

                            Non defense discretionary spending: $278B

                            Tax cuts: $425B

Doctor Logic, the EASIEST way to balance the budget is to GROW the economy. The more money being made, the more people working, the greater the TAX revenue.

                            But you knew that, right?

Like it or not, our economy is based on business, and business is being CHOKED by regulations.

Now, I'm not in favor of removing ALL regulations. But neither do I think all regulations are good.

Right now and for years, our economy's growth, when there IS any, is not keeping pace with inflation.

And if you are the one who buys groceries, you know that the figures on inflation are being skewed by what they are COUNTING and what they are not. My spending at the grocery store is up by nearly 15% this year. And I can't count the last time I bought BEEF.

Doctor Logic, you see, the problem with your post #12.2 is that Obama PROMISED to NOT be like Bush. so you don't GET to dump all of the TARP bailouts on Bush when Obama signed them. You don't GET to blame the cost of the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan on Bush, because for 3 1/2 YEARS (+) those expenditures (STILL UNFUNDED, I might add, even tho Obama/the dems OWNED Congress for 4 years.)

You don't GET to blame the Bush tax cut's cost ALL on Bush, because the dems could have repealed ALL of those from 2006-2010.

and you don't get to claim 'savings' in the military (from pulling us out of Iraq) when that pull out was already scheduled under BUSH.

As for the 'tax cuts' that Obama has enacted? Are you talking about the payroll tax reductions? Because you DO know that the lower amount being withheld for SS will result eventually in a SMALLER benefit for that individual? That is robbing the future to pay for the greedy present.

AND THAT, my friend is also what the ballooning deficit is all about, too.

I didn't like it under Bush, Never voted for Shrub. (Voted DEM in the last 5 presidential elections.0

So WHY would I think it is OK for a guy I DID vote for to keep being "like BUSH"?

He is continuing a policy of ROBBING my kids and grands to pay it out today to people who will VOTE for him. Only that WON'T be me this time.

And Romney? If HE doesn't do a better job, I won't vote for HIM again, either.

It's not about PARTY for me, it's about COUNTRY, and its future.

And BTW--regarding the 'gas/petroleum' subsidies--my DEM Senator said it best--with the price of gas over $4 a gallon, now is NOT the time to eliminate those subsidies. Read that again--she's a DEM.

the one thing obama had in 2008 is gone from his campaign..."hope"

i think obama has a great attack machine...they dont have to tell the truth so they call romney a "felon"...they say he killed a woman by giving her cancer somehow. even democrats are laughing at obamas accusations.

the obama campaign keep saying "we've created positive job growth for 21 months straight".............I guess that depends on what they mean by "positive job growth" if losing 350-370k jobs a month for the last 42 months straight......but only creating 60-150k jobs each month means "positive job growth" ...then the romney campaign is going to bury obama with this.

according to obamas own labor dept we have lost 3.5 million jobs since 2009.....there is no where to hide from these figures.

what new plans does obama have to get the 23 million americans back to work ? ....green jobs ? .....shovel ready jobs ? ...blaming americans for his economic failures is not going to work this time either.

obama has plenty of blame to throw around.....but he wont own up to his failures.

obama likes to pit one side against the other, rich against poor....minority against majority.....citizens against illegals......what ever it takes for obama to get what he wants. i think americans are tired of his garbage.

americans are smarter than obama thinks we are.

...your 'hope' was just a word.

So, jfix, can't handle the truth, eh? Where does that number come from every month that details the number of NEW jobless claims, the work fairy? Oblameo's net jobs creation has been next to zero; he can't even keep up with the number of new high school and college grads entering the work force! If Obozo is so great, why isn't he walking on water in Nawlins? Why isn't Odumbo parting the seas and forcing the flood back into the Gulf?

I know, I know: you all can't handle the truth, so you have to make stuff up. Well make this up: see the long winding road going over the rolling hills into the sunset. See the couple, one tall and thin, the other tall and well-founded, walking down the road hand in hand into that sunset. The tall, thin one turns to the tall, well-founded one and says, "Well, honey, my golf handicap is down to 2 since I got to play almost every day."

GT--the Labor department says we have to create at least 150 THOUSAND NEW jobs every month just to 'break even' because of the NEW entrants into the job market every month--be they HS or college grads, legal immigrants, moms going back to work after the kids go to college, etc. Multiply that times 3 years and 9 months, and you get 6,600,000 NEW jobs that have been needed to be created under Obama, just to keep up with the NEW jobs seekers. That doesn't COUNT the number of job seekers who are "OLD" entrants into the job market via LOSING their jobs.

And those figures come (albeit in a HIDDEN way) from this ADMIN's own Labor department.

Barack Hussein Obama ll is not an American, but an Islamic socialist. Born from a Communist mother and socialist father. Raised in Indonesia by his step-father Lolo Soetoro, then later, sent to Hawaii to live with his Communist grandparents. There, Barry Soetoro (only 10 yrs. old) was mentored by a known Communist, Frank Marshall Davis and Barry’s grandparents, until he graduated from high school.

Barry entered Occidental College as Barry Soetoro, an exchange student from Indonesia. Two years later, he enrolled @ Columbia University where Obama networks with Marxist professors/followers, black radicals and Pakistani students.

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Obama meets Bill Ayers, known terrorist and co-founder of the Underground Weather. Obama is inspired by Ayers to run for public office and is supported by the “New Party”, an organization that was originally called the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Barack Obama’s 20 yr. association with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright had left Obama with many political scars and enhanced Obama’s desire for social order in government.

Today, Barack Obama still claims his devotion to Islam, while mocking Christianity. President Barack Obama plans to cut military spending in half, eliminating 80% of our defense weapons, including nuclear weapons and make the US dependent of energy, especially from petroleum oil. The economy is sliding back into recession, with a good chance to hit rock bottom. If this happens, the free world, as we know it, will be devastated. It will be then when the Islamic nations take over, with the help of Russia, ending democracy.

I am an independent, not a conservative or republican. In 2008, I voted for Mr. Obama hoping for change. But I wasn’t expecting the changes we have witnessed these last 4 yrs.
There is a dark side of Barack Obama that separates his ideals from those who live and believe in “We the People………….”. Form your own opinion, if you like, but mine rests heavily on the future of our great nation.

                                    May God bless America.

TopDrum - you don't have to go to a foreign country and kill a bunch of people to earn the right to express your opinion. Our constitution gives you this right. You don't have to like Muslims or Mormons or Jews or African Americans or Latinos either. And you have the right to think this country should be controlled by rich white Christian men.

Obama must be the worst Muslim after attending a christian church for 20 years (which was the argument by bobbleheads in 2008)

I must say. I have listened to many military briefings and not once have I heard a military official say that they have the right to question somebody's faith as a result of their military service? Drum, that would probably make you a statistical outlier.........or crackpot.

By romney's version of coaching...Bush took over for a Super bowl coach and he took the same perfect 16-0 team to the exact opposite..0-16. Bush then gets replaced by Obama who takes the 0-16 team . He loses the first 4 games because the players had frankly, had to relearn the game. then he wins the next 12 games ( jobs growth 30 straight months), but Team RR says, " we need to hire the 0-16 team again. Because make no mistake, there are few differences between Bush and RR, and the ones that are different, RR is much worse.

Maze--you DO know that there is a difference between "helping the poor" and "supporting the poor for the rest of their lives no matter HOW many bad decisions they make''?

I grew up in the 60's and watched WELFARE make it more profitable to sit on your duff and do NOTHING but have sex and crank out babies that it was to stay in school and get a job. That is NOT 'helping the poor', that is PUNISHING those who DID work hard in HS, DID get into college or trade school, or even (shudder) a Union, and went out and worked hard, and made something of themselves.

The nearly half a century has PROVEN that 'welfare' that is not LIMITED does NOT 'help' the poor. The old adage 'you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink ALSO applies to people achieving success in life. I'm ALL for job training, educational assistance, Counseling on Birth control, child care assistance, but I'm TOTALLY against subsidizing ANYONE being on the 'dole' for life.

As the saying goes, Democracy fails when those who WORK for a living are out-numbered for those who VOTE for their living.

Or, to quote Margeret Thatcher--pretty soon you run out of OTHER people's money.

Republican logic – start a war, cut taxes. Start another war, cut taxes again. When your expenses go up dramatically, you need to voluntarily cut your income.

Republican logic – our number one priority is to create jobs. We need to get the guy who’s recent performance as governor in creating jobs was one of the worst in the country. 47th to be exact. Hurricane Katrina kept him from being 48th.

Republican logic – jobs jobs jobs – recent history tells us that tax cuts for the wealthy is a complete failure in creating jobs. So let’s try it again. This time, we will give the super rich much bigger tax cuts and raise taxes on the middle class and poor.

Republican logic – democrat in the white house creates 23 million jobs, budget surplus, booming economy. Republican in the white house creates war, torture and economic disaster. Let’s elect another republican with the exact same policies as the last republican.

Why should we give the failure named Obama another 'turn'?

The way I see it, if you can't do the job, you shouldn't have the job.

How can you be content with what we have now? I doubt anyone could be worse as a leader of this country than Obama - and I remember the Carter years well, another democrat failure.

I don't see where they got the idea that Regan could walk on water for he never impressed me one bit,he was a union hater and fired thousands from their Air Traffic Control job.Regan was influenced by others and corporate America in the White House on everything he did.

Maybe he meant let go of the do-nothing Republican Congress. It seems to me that it is Republicans that are not doing their job

A clerk at Walmart works harder than the do nothing congresss, why aren't they getting those great wages and benefits.

Need a job--"it seems to me that it is Republicans who are not doing their job."

Need--EVERY Repub who was elected in 2010 was sent there to do EXACTLY what they are doing. A representative or a senator is "hired" by his constituency, to do what THEY want them to, NOT by the president, or the opposition's leader, to rubber stamp.

I was pretty honked at my DEM reps during the Bush admin for going along with 2 unfunded wars--and they COULD have shut those wars down by cutting the budget in 2006-8, and did not.'

But I was mad enough at my Senator's blind following of Obama on the HCB, DESPITE what her constituents were telling her, that I held my nose and voted for a PUB for Senate (not her seat, but her 'protoge' was the Dem Candidate) in 2010, to STOP the spending.

And I will be voting against Claire in 2012, IF the pubs can get rid of that bozo Akin as the candidate, adn I'll be abstaining if not.

So, sorry, even though I have mostly voted Dem in the past, and like Clint Eastwood, am PRO Choice, and Pro gay rights, I DO not want my representatives to rubber stamp the president or his party.

No matter WHO is president, and which party he represents.

Spot, just remember that the GOP got together as soon as Obama was elected. The GOP elite met on Inauguration Day over a steak dinner and plotted ways to obstruct Obama.Sen. McConnell distributed a plan to his GOP colleagues in the Senate to oppose anything Obama proposed whenever they could!

At a time of crisis, with the country’s entire financial system near collapse, with the economy collapsing, with the stock market collapsing, with unemployment skyrocketing, with people losing their jobs and retirement money, the GOP announced that their NUMBER 1 PRIORITY was to assure that Pres. Obama was a 1 term president---- even BEFORE he was sworn in!!!

They abandoned their duty to the American people for the sake of sabotaging a new president taking office in the midst of the greatest crisis since 1929.--- for the sake of political gain! I don’t know if that fit’s the legal definition of treason, but it sure smells like it and is at the very least, un-American and unpatriotic. Never before have I seen a political party abandon it’s country in time of crisis! NEVER!

Sao they gave Joe America the finger, got almost no important business done as soon as they got the filibuster back on Feb. 4, 2010. Then, having just returned from vacation, they went back on vacation for the GOP convention and the duration of the campaign! I agree with you 100%. They should be paid by the hour. If they arent clocked in, they dont get paid!

@tom....you sad, dillusional little man. He is a one term president, but that comes on his own actions and merits....not some conspiracy by the GOP. He is stupid. Dumber than a box of rocks. Everyone knows it, it's just stupid, inbred hillbillies like you who hate to admit it. Just remember, inbreeding is against the law and vote Mitt and Ryan on election day....if you can find the poll.....and no, it is not something you hump. Get a normal person to help you.
