Eastwood's ad-libbed remarks echo day after GOP convention

KENNER, La -- It was a substance-free, 12-minute prime-time performance that remains unlikely to sway a single vote, but Clint Eastwood's cameo appearance and conversation with an empty chair representing President Barack Obama in Thursday night's final hour of the Republican convention coverage remained a prime topic on the campaign trail Friday.

Actor Clint Eastwood speaks to an empty chair Thursday during the final day of the Republican National Convention at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Mitt Romney's top strategist told reporters on the candidate's campaign plane Friday that the moment should be judged as a performance, and that while not everyone may have liked it, Eastwood's very presence -- and concern for out-of-work Americans in particular -- made the rambling remarks by the 82-year old Academy Award winner worthwhile.

"The fact that he’s there shows he’s speaking his mind and if somebody wants to say I would have liked this different performance or that difference performance, have it," Romney campaign strategist Stuart Stevens told reporters, comparing the remarks to two famous Eastwood films. "Some people didn’t like 'Dirty Harry,' some people didn’t like 'Gran Torino,' that’s OK."

And while Ann Romney and several of Romney's top advisers remained stone-faced during Eastwood's appearance, Stevens said Mitt Romney very much enjoyed it.

"I was backstage with him and he was laughing," Stevens said."[Romney] thought it was funny."

A Romney adviser confirmed the remarks were ad-libbed, and the use of an empty chair as a prop was not discussed by the campaign. If there was any panic during the remarks, the adviser said, it might have come from the control room, where convention planners watched Eastwood continue for more than double his allotted time.

"He did what actors do sometimes, he did a little improv. If someone wants to say this wasn’t Clint Eastwood’s greatest performance, have at it. It doesn’t matter, you know," the adviser said. "It’s I think people saw that Clint Eastwood was not only endorsing Romney but endorsing the need for change. I liked that."

Meanwhile in Virginia, Romney running mate Paul Ryan faced a question by a reporter from NBC’s Hampton Roads affiliate WAVY if Eastwood's remarks were a distraction.

Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood made a surprise appearance at the Republican National Convention, but his rambling speech, which included a make-believe conversation with President Obama, got a mixed reception. NBC's Tamron Hall reports.

"I think Clint Eastwood was just being Clint Eastwood,” Ryan said in the interview to air Saturday. “One of the most profound things Clint said was that 23 million people out of work struggling to find jobs is just unacceptable."

Vice President Joe Biden, who was the butt of several of Eastwood's sharpest jokes, didn't mention the 'Dirty Harry' actor's performance during campaign stops in Ohio Friday.

But, according to pool reports, a supporter did allude to Eastwood's chair act, insisting to Biden during an impromptu stop at an Ohio fairgrounds that "You gotta keep the chair."

Biden didn't directly acknowledge the "chair" comment but gave the woman, Bev Kalmer of Poland, Ohio, a kiss on the lips.

Ann Romney, who spoke in prime time on the first full night of the convention, told CBS that Eastwood is "a unique guy and he did a unique thing" during his RNC appearance.

Asked if she was surprised by the unusual speech, she laughed and said merely "I didn't know it was coming."

OMG! They just re-aired the Eastwood Debacle on MSNBC. It's worse today than it was yesterday. This was suppose to help Mr. Romney? I think not! Last night was a disaster for Mr. Romney because more people are discussing Mr. Eastwood's speech/presentation than Mr. Romney's speech et al. Whoever his campaign mangers/strategists are should hang their heads in shame. What a mess! What a waste! Next stop, SNL!

Missy 814760 Romney's chance of being elected does not hinge on one appearance by Clint Eastwood. Dems are getting desperate for 4 more years of Obama who is leading us into a third world country.Democrats love those government handouts.Obama and his Michele have had their fair shre of the talk show circuit which I find classless of any president and first lady.

I agree with you regarding one appearance by Mr. Eastwood and the effect it could have on the election. But I don't believe that his appearance helped Mr. Romney. All anybody is talking about is the Eastwood episode and that's the fault of Mr. Romney's campaign staff. They used very poor judgement in both scheduling when he was to speak as well as approving his bit with the empty chair. Sadly, Mr. Eastwood clearly lost his train of thought, was barely audible at times and he rambled, too. If you think the President and First Lady going on a talk show is "classless" wait until SNL and a few of the late nights take their shot. Again, this debacle is the fault of Mr. Romney's campaign staff.

It was nice of the Republicans to put that deficit clock up there and have the theme "We built it". I guess they were acknowledging Reagan's "Tax the man behind the tree" and Bush cutting taxes while going off to 2 wars. They sure did build that deficit that our kids can pay because the greedy Republican party of today will not pay taxes. Instead they will endow that to their children and their children's children with their pathetic me, me, me attitude.

      Compaq

      Callaway Sports

      Apple

      OUTBACK

      Ben & Jerry's

They all have been helped by the Small Business Administration SBA - a Government Program

And Joe baby - my husband worked with local banks and the SBA for start-up businesses

In fact The Pentagon Food Court was one of his shining stars - has 20,000 customers a day and was financed by SBA

And there are thousands more of start-ups that benefitted from the expertise and help by the SBA

They analyze - recommend - and yes find money from banks and get loans at below par

So you and your no nothing people are just that NO NOTHING

Interesting one of the Business Woman you wan't to highlight at your farce convention had to drop out because she got SBA money

Himmbird-3359530 Oh yes there is taxpayer money involved. It is a tax write off for the employer when they provide health insurance so the taxpayer has to make up that shortfall to the Feds come tax time.Think about this for a second. The health insurance benefits that you receive from your employer will be taxed starting next year.It is going to be considered income and it is part of Obamacare. So the working stiff, who has a good employer, will pay for those who do not have health insurance.the rest of Obamacare is being funded by the Medicare fund which it was not intended for.

I like Client Eastwood as an actor, however he needs to stay in Hollywood, or grow some breast and get blonde wig and become a announcer for Fox News "Fair and Balanced". His rhetoric was as about useful as Romney's rhetoric; "nothing". Not only did he spent his time talking to an empty chair. He provided no ideas why Romney would be a good candidate for president. He talk about his good business sense, however, he did not talk about his record in Massachusetts where job growth was 47th in the country or how people was leaving the state to find jobs or Bain Capital, Ampad, Staples; the Steel industries, or the unemployment and hardship on families caused by Bain Capital, all at Romney's hands. He also left out the fact that Bain Capitol broke the New England bank, that funded his business ventures, which required a taxpayer bailout. Lets not forget the statement how much “Romney loves the USA”, however there's was no mention, why Romney's love for America caused him to keep his money in Swiss bank accounts, which is not accessible for US citizens to borrow and use in this country. Moreover, not only does he keep his money in other countries, and pay less taxes than the ordinary citizen, his questionable good business experience is done in other countries. We also have the fact he has failed to provide his tax returns, which shows a lack of honesty. Client also spoke of Obama's failures, however no mention of Bush's failures, which is the root of most of the rhetoric he was spouting, furthermore, he did not mention how the invasion of Iraq was unfunded and a mistake and 66,000 innocent people were killed, or the Highway of Death, where they were bombing anybody who traveled it, even innocent citizens from other countries and the fact that Iraq is worse now than they were before the invasion. However, there was no mention of Pakistan where six Navy Seals done what Bush supposedly sent thousands to do. He spoke of Afghanistan and how Obama should how learn from Russia, however he said nothing about how the US supplied weapons to Afghanistan during those Russians years or of an incident where a president landing on a aircraft carrier USSAbraham Lincoln stating “Mission Accomplished”. . He also, left out how Halliburton a construction company run by Dick Cheney the Vice President during the Bush era's had spent millions of taxpayer's money rebuilding Iraq and even now most of the construction is still unfinished. He spoke of Gitmo not closing, but not how Gitmo got started. If Obama had actually been sitting in the chair, He could have made really made Client look like an idiot. It is really hard for me to understand this Christian Conservative views, the republicans spout and how they justify nominating a man that has manipulated the facts and his business experience and the fact he is highly recommended by a Mormon church who supposedly uphold christian values. Which does not say much for that establishment. Maybe when Joseph Smith left with the golden tablets, he took the "I shall not lie" commandment with him.

rhopper: I'm not blaming, I'm curious. If you're an American and can't write a simple sentence in your native language without grammatical errors, why would anyone think you might know something much more abstract such as politics and economics?

Empty chair Eh, I don't need no chair, get off my lawn. Oh, the chairs overdue sit down; Clint needs Medicare more than we think.

But that chair is warm; we know that this is done by sitting and in cold room sit on your hands, too hard then rock back and forth.

Remember in your youth you were sat in empty chair facing the corner, determined not to yield, pouting, but hard chair was uncomfortable to sit in, your legs grew numb, finally in tears begged for forgiveness you were saved. Your grandfather happened to be made know the problem, recognizing the situation was able to slyly explain that growing up need not be so hard. The old fellow took time when the children were attentive; to say that there were only three rules to go by. First rule seemed familiar, by experience; it was to "do what you were asked to do when you are asked", well this was often the point of distress but left open the question of being worthwhile, not as satisfying as fighting. Second rule helped provide an objective for the first rule, "do what you are going to be asked to do, before you are asked". The same request do the same thing can be tedious, but if you make a game of remembering what you are asked do, just to see what if was noticed when it is already done. This rule uses the rational part of the brain to plan for some different outcome. Third rule was to "do what you might be asked to do before it was thought of", this was to engage the powers of observation. The parents a few weeks later became concerned and ask the grandfather what he had told the children, he explained. The father then asked his father why he hadn't had these rules when we was growing up, the grandfather said as parent I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but I finally learn from my mistakes.

The empty chair metaphor has legs:

George W. Bush was in the empty chair.
The plotters dining on Inaugural day were in the empty chair.
The Republican 111th House was in the empty chair.
The Republican 111th Senate was in the empty chair.
The Supreme Court was in the empty chair.
The Appointments blocked were in the empty chair.
The Tea Party was in the empty chair.
Citizens United was in the empty chair.
The Super Pac was in the empty chair.
The Republican 112th House was in the empty chair.
The Republican 112th Senate was in the empty chair.
The Republican Party was in the empty chair.
The Wall Streets was in the empty chair.

When a good man comes and fills the empty chair, just how many times has the chair been pulled from under him?

Yes there are lots of empty chairs; they used to hold real Americans, today the empty chair sits with its foot in the aisles.

It's hard to believe Clint Eastwood a skilled director and actor really ad-libbed anything let alone remarks that could make or break an election. An empty chair on the stage was staged. The remarks were rehearsed by Eastwood, first to commit to memory and second for timing. The timing being when to introduce these in the scripted publicly approved speech. This is great marketing and less an unscripted ad lib. I'm sure Eastwood discussed the bit with the Romney camp for approval and vetting prior to having a conveniently placed chair on stage. The only risk the Republicans took is nominating Romney, everything else is planned.

Barack Obama had better get his resume refined, he will be unemployed after November and his last four years on the job were hardly remarkable.

I am a Blue Dog Democrat and have only voted for a Republican candidate twice (Reagan in 84, Bush 41 in 1988). Eastwood was funny, the fact that liberals are mocking his performance indicate their desperation. I am voting Romney/Ryan in 2012, at that's pretty telling coming from this ole blue dog.

chadrewski - I am a Democrat - my first vote was for JFK - never on the face of this earth ever voted for a Republican least of all a -B Actor who started the de-regulation of our important industries in this country or the man responsible from his crooked daddy cohabitating with the Germans to his involvement in the Iran Contra Affair

Having said that if that really is your god given name you are either Polish or Russian - I come from Lithuanian stock and my grandfather who was self taught - lost two sons in WW11 told me when I was five years of age - never vote for a Republican - THEY WILL STEAL YOUR LUNCH

Thank you Grandfather you have been absolutely right - even after all these years!

                            @TJefferson: Two questions.

Why did you ever paraphrase the separation b/w religion and government as the separation b/w "church and state"?

If you were going to give an Oscar for the best "interview skit", would it go to Clint Eastwood and his interview with a chair, or to Samantha Bee and her interview of actual people at the RNC?

G-Dog: I'll try to answer your two questions. Let me begin with the second.

                            1. Question: "If you were going to give an Oscar for the best "interview skit", would it go to Clint Eastwood and his interview with a chair, or to Samantha Bee and her interview of actual people at the RNC?

Answer: You must think there was an Oscar performance there. Are you serious??!!??

                            2. Question: Why did you ever paraphrase the separation b/w religion and government as the separation b/w "church and state"?

Answer: I don't recall ever paraphrasing the separation of church and state in the manner you described. Why not tell me how you got that from anything I wrote?

Eastwood is old...we can forgive his ramblings. But why him? To encite the white male, the white supremesists, the klu klux clan? That whole convention was 1 lie after another. They lie so much not all the liars can even remember them all. ( Cantor ) Romney called this country a company. Brewer said president obama enstead of romney, and the only truth told was from rubio who said they wanted more goverment than freedom!

                              • Republicans Can't TRUST Republicans

Tampa, Aug 30, 2012: at a fundraiser during the Republican National Convention, GOP strategist Karl Rove said, "We should sink Todd Akin," and followed that by stating, "If he's found mysteriously murdered, don't look for my whereabouts!"

                              http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/08/todd-akins-office-disturbed-by-karl-roves-joke/

                              Karl Rove, GOP/Republican strategist

Todd Akin, GOP/Republican Congressman, candidate for U.S. Senator of Missouri

                              • How can anyone TRUST a Republican, including a Republican?
