VIDEO: First Read Minute: What Mitt Romney has to do tonight

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro lay out the expectations for Mitt Romney's speech at the Republican National Convention tonight and recap Paul Ryan's speech from last night.

Discuss this post

Ryan must have been wearing a suit straight out of some
industrial executive's catalogue. It couldn't have been made by a designer or
even off the rack at a local retailer. Had there been any validity to the old
saying: "liar, liar pants on fire" his pants would have burst into flames last
night with all the lies he told. His pants must have been made with some sort
of fire retardant material similar to asbestos.

For one, he blamed president Obama for the closure of an
auto plant in his home town. The auto plant he referred to closed in December
2008. Obama wasn't even inaugurated at that point. Moreover, the people in
charge don't just wake up in the morning and come up with the idea of closing a
plant and then do so. A plant closure would come after careful consideration
that would take some time to decide. Whatever the reason, it all happened under
the Bush regime. But once again, the GOP creates a problem and then expects the
democrats to fix it. If the democrats can't fix it, the republicans blame the
democrats for the problem.

Then there is the fact that they have a ticker in the
background showing the rise of the national debt in actual time. Seriously?
Here's a news flash to the GOP: the republican party is to blame for much of
our debt. It was their irresponsible actions which led to insurance, banking
and Wall Street failures because of their want to allow big business to go
unchecked. Yet they continue to once again say that the government should have
even less restrictions on these entities. No matter how these cons try to spin
it, they are responsible for at least a major portion of the debt. These people
will stoop to new lows in their visceral attack against the democrats with no
concern for facts.

And now tonight we have the GOP current liar-in-chief Romney to take the podium and lie better than the rest.

For the sake of this country vote: OBAMA 2012

It gets me, how the Republican theme at their convention is "we built that," meaning private enterprise built America, while our TV screens are filled with pictures of the new levies, built with taxpayer money, holding back the waters from downing New Orleans (again.) You couldn't ask for a better representation of government investment in infrastructure paying off.

Spanky - give it a rest. You're backing the wrong horse - as usual. You clearly don't give a damn about the country and it shows with your trying to sell the lowlife Romney to anyone.

Luckily, most of us are smart enough to vote for Obama - who'll win again in November. Maybe then the Republican party will come into the 21st century - though I seriously doubt it!

And, Joe Biden is feeling just fine! All he has to do is face a known liar!

Ann Romney dissed Massachusetts by saying:

You may not agree with Mitt's positions on issues or his politics. Massachusetts is only 13% Republican, so it's not like that's a shock.

the residents of Mass gave your lying husband a job so now that's he's done using Mass, you don't care about Mass? Your flip flopping husband sucked at his job that's why his ratings are in the 30s.

Ann "You People" Romney is a stuck up b*tch - sorry but as a Mass resident, I find her comment insulting.

Watching Scott Walker double down on the Lyin' Ryan's plant closure was truly hysterical. And not to be outdone, Scott Walker then tripled down on the Lyin' Ryan lie, which was simply pathetic. Walker would have us believe that at conception, Obama immediately began a sinister scheme to shut the plan down one month before he assumed office some 40 odd years later.

Hey spanky, why don't you run those same figures from January 2009, you know, when President Obama first took office, to July 2012 ?

I think you would find that there has been a net INCREASE in employment of about 2,481,000

Aren't statistics fun ? Like Rasmussen reports, its easy to manipulate the numbers when you want the numbers to match your lie.

One lie the GOP won't be able to get around, they will lose this election simply because they are evil.

Anyone else notice how Scott Walker's eyes kept sinking back into his head more and more as he was repeatedly challenged on the closing of the Janesville plant? Or was that because his nose was growing?

And it was commented by the media that Walker got all emotional and teary-eyed over Ryan's speech. Wisconsinites hoped he was shedding a tear over WI losing more jobs last month than any other state - again, and the true fact that WI also had the highest increase in unemployment in the US last month.

Will republicans ever address this.

Now why would I vote for a man to hold the highest office in the land when he chooses to "take the fifth" on his own personal business.

Romney has hammered Romney, he makes it real easy for me not to even consider voting for him, can you tell why I should Spanky, can you make a case for him, or are you gonna "take the fifth" on Romney's "taking the fifth".

States are in charge of power plants, with some exclusion to nuclear. Actually that comment is deceptive. States are in charge of giving permits to power companies to build their plants. Barring drastic circumstances, power companies make the decision to close a plant.

Here is what Romney won't say tonight:

Hey those republican red states hit by the storm need help, I know they are against government intrusion into their lives, and I know they hate this president and how he wishes to make them stepchildren in his nanny state. They need to rally that spirit of self reliance and individual responsibility, you should not expect the government to take care of you. We need to starve the beast, you cannot continue to feast off the beast, you cannot expect the starving beast to rescue you. Where is this all this tax money coming from you will chew through, we are against taxes, ww should put a call in to the local corporations for help, you know corporations are damn good people. Call on me, Mitt Romney I will rally wall street and the private sector to your rescue I know how to get things done. Don't call on the lazy overpaid public sector workers who's wages and benefits we need to cut to risk their lives and bail you out. How we gonna give trillions in tax cuts to the wealthiest of the wealthy if we have to keep pouring tax money into Louisiana year in and year out. Call the Koch brothers they can spare a few billion, and I here they are awfully nice guys who are very concerned about your welfare. How can you live with yourself if you are reduced to turning to Obama and he federal government as your saviour.

Republicans spew that crap constantly for the last three and a half years, they will spew tons of it at their convention tonight as they beg for help from the government they treat with such disdain, but never fail to depend on themselves. There crap sounds great when they think they are talking about poor people in Chicago or anywhere else, but it is an entirely different tune when they themselves need help, and they always need plenty don't they, yes sir, they always do need plenty of federal dollars and support.

I hope they get the help they need, I hope they realize where it comes from, and just who pays for it. It will not come from the wealthiest 1%, it will not come from corporate America, it will come from the very people who work for the government they denigrate day in and day out, and it will be paid for Union men like me, and other workers who make just enough money to pay more than twice the tax rate Romney does.

Good luck and God bless, maybe someday you will figure out who your friends are, they are the ones to show up when you need help.

It as good as it is going to get for Romney, republicans are only preaching to their own choir, they have yet to pick up any support in key demographics needed to win a general election. He has at least for the moment solidified his base, but even that will wain after the fervor of the convention wears off, and even if it don't the republican base cannot get him to 270 electoral votes. If the general electorate gets out and votes, he loses.

The democrats will also have their convention and the fact that it comes after the republican convention is a political advantage, then the debates, where Romney will be twisting in the wind trying to somehow sensibly reconcile his dual positions on everything, and the fact that he has to come up with some lame excuse of why he will not show tax his returns, it just confirms for people that this guy that they already felt was phony, is now shady to boot.

Granted, many republicans will hold their nose and vote for him out of their irrational hatred for Obama, but in the end there will not be enough of those people to get him the 270 electoral votes he needs to win.

However, the terms 'recession' and 'recovery' deal with the rates of change, not the current number.

And once you consider seasonal adjustments and normalize the datum across the regional sections of the country, as well as look at year-over-year trends from the Beige book, while taking into account that it is in fact a leap year, as well as considering the recent value of the Euro against the Yen, and project the weekly gains in employment estimates against the real monthly trends, you in fact can see that the Obama economy has made great gains, when compared the Roosevelt recession recovery from the years 1937 and 1938.

Spanky: I thought you were trying to compare the time President Obama started office to today.

Sorry, I forgot you just wanted to spew forth your talking point without needing facts to back it up.

Why didn't you choose July 2003 (same point in W's first term) or July 1979, same point in Reagan's first term... I mean if you want to prove a point, it really does not matter what date you use, so long as you choose one that proves your point, right ?

I looked at January 2009, when President Obama took office and compared the employment to the numbers you gave for July 2012 and I found out that some 2,481,000 more people were employed. I looked for facts about President Obama's time in office and whether employment has improved while he is in office. I did not know it was as good as I found out. See, I used a scientific method to discover truth.

Now I know that does not support your theme, but facts have rarely supported the Republican theme. And we all know that science has nothing to do with the Republican party, just ask Rep. Akin and Rep. Ryan.

So reading up on Janesville is pretty interesting but I have laugh at Politifact interpretation of the claim being 100% false.

"And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years. The question is not whether a clean energy economy is in our future, it's where it will thrive. I want it to thrive right here in the United States of America; right here in Wisconsin; and that's the future I'll fight for as your president."

That's a statement of belief that, with government help, the Janesville plant could remain open -- but not a promise to keep it open.

So a candidate for the Presidency, while at the plant, states that "if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years." , but this cannot be construed as a promise but as a statement of belief. I have never heard a candidate make a statement of belief on the campaign trail. It seems if you have to be a lawyer to understand when a candidate is making a campaign promise or simply a statement of belief.

But the article reported that Obama, who later provided an $80 billion auto bailout, had pledged to help keep the Janesville plant and others like it "viable." That's not quite the same thing as pledging keep the Janesville plant open.

So again we need some clarification as to the difference between viable and open, and note that he was at the plant and mentioned it by name. Apparently, even though the President had $80B to bail out the auto companies, Janesville was already viable, because it didn't get any money, and if the President tells you your plant will be viable next year, that does not mean it will still be open.

I have to say for the genius orator this President is, he has a real problem with the English language and the way sentences are constructed.

- you didn't build that referring to bridges and road

- the difference between viable and open

- "the Janesville plant and others like it" didn't actually mean the Janesville plant specifically

Alan NJ: I have to say for the genius orator this President is, he has a real problem with the English language and the way sentences are constructed.

The linguistic gymnastics the Democrats have to go through to defend what Obama has stated in the past are getting to be up to Olympic level standards. The Liberals must redefine the very meaning of the words in our language to have Obama's past statements square with the current results of his actions and his current statements. To listen to them go through the choreography and verbal gyrations in their descriptions of "Obama speak" is like listening to the Olympic announcers describe the gymnastic routines of the Olympians.

In addition to that, the Liberals are now going through the list of what they call "code words" that in fact are racist terms to describe Obama. Two of the new ones are "Chicago" (where he is from) and "golf" ( what he does a lot of). Those words are now racist, at least when used in the context of describing Obama. What it really means is they, Team Obama, don't want to talk about such things, and will behave like Joe McCarthy did if you do.

It's an amazing thing to observe.

The damage was done by 2008, there are more people working now, we went from losing 500,000 jobs a month, to gaining about 100,000 a month, when you go from a negative 500,000 to a positive 100,000 that is a 600% improvement. Why do you never hold GW Bush and republicans responsible for their portion of the debt. Obama had to put two unfunded wars on his account because Bush failed to pick up his own tab, why do you never hold the Republican house responsible, they legislate not the president, they authorize spending not the president, what have they done for all the people out of work you feel so sorry for, can you name anything they have done to the benefit of those people. No it is all Obama's fault all day, every day, with you, you just woke up in 2012 and the whole mess is his and his alone, he is singularly responsible for all your woes.

If a man had cancer, tuberculosis, and hepatitis, and then was hit by a bus, then got up staggered across the street stubbed his toe on the curb and fell over dead, you would claim he died of a stubbed toe!

JAS1 "Clarification: Obama built it for FG. His words. No 'gray area'."

Ha JAS1 you started the discussion by way of:

"Yeah, that's about what you get from the Libs when they try to explain the failure of the Obama economy."

Those were your words, you described it as Obama's economy, you talk about linguistics, and your all tangled up in your own. It's an amazing thing to observe. Tee Hee, you tickle me.

FG: Why do you never hold GW Bush and republicans responsible for their portion of the debt.

Please. GW was no friend of conservatives. He is held responsible for his failures. What is striking is that Obama isn't held responsible for his. Check out the responses to Obama 'not being responsible for as prices' when in fact he blamed Bush for the very same. Odd, isn't it?

[Leftwing talking points omitted to save a few electrons]

why do you never hold the Republican house r

I do. They've done an awful job these past two years. But yet, the Libs won't be critical of Pelosi and the Dems for running up $5 trillion of debt from 2006-2010. Odd again, isn't it?

Again FG, you want to give credit to Team Obama for your good fortune, have at it. Others have not been so fortunate in Obama's economic climate, just say'n. Anyone that depends so heavily on a government, their political party, or God forbid, one man, will get what they deserve.

Ha JAS1 you started the discussion by way of: "Yeah, that's about what you get from the Libs when they try to explain the failure of the Obama economy."

You're not that stupid FG, but you appear to be on the right path.

    #1.56 - Thu Aug 30, 2012 4:24 PM EDT

Ha your are correct I am not that stupid, you start by calling it "Obama's economy", then I say I'm doing fine and you accuse me of giving credit for my success to "team Obama" again your words not mine. You never started by saying the economy, it was "Obama's economy" now you have changed that to "Obama's economic climate", however you wish to credit Obama is ok with me, but it is still your description not mine.

"Anyone that depends so heavily on a government, their political party, or God forbid, one man, will get what they deserve."

BTW I have never depended on the government for anything other than what public services they provide by way of my tax money, you know roads, bridges, public library, law enforcement, ect. I have never been employed by any government, nor have I ever depended or been employed by a political party, and as much as I think it would be pretty cool I never used Barrack Obama as a reference on my resume.

FG: BTW I have never depended on the government for anything other than what public services they provide by way of my tax money,

But you have your nose firmly up Obama's back side giving him credit Obama for your IRA account. Odd that you didn't credit the businesses for reclaiming their market share and building up your portfolio, or were you all in on GM?

It is Obama's economy FG. You can play semantics all you want, but by running the federal government he sets the economic climate with his spending, borrowing, policies, and regulations. And it may work well for you, but for most it does not. Please deny if you think that is not the case.

You're a good liberal FG. You follow nicely. Keep it up.

    #1.59 - Thu Aug 30, 2012 5:10 PM EDT

It's working well for many JAS1, it was not working for anybody under Bush, the markets were destroyed under Bush, the loss of wealth was staggering, the job losses, the home equity losses they were horrendous, under a republican president, the market is more than double now, jobs are coming back, and home prices are creeping up. Those are facts and Bush was the president when it went to hell and Obama is the president as all improves so as you say if the president sets the climate then the fact is the stock market which is more than double where it was in Nov.2008 and is the life blood of our capitalist system, the housing market, and the job market prefer the Obama climate much better than the republican climate in which all were nearly destroyed. So which is JAS1 you say above that i have my nose up the presidents backside because I give him credit, then in the next sentence you say Obama must take responsibility because he sets the climate. I get it JAS 1 you want him to take credit for the bad, but he must not get any credit for the good, perhaps you can play that game with some republicans on this blog, but as you say he must take responsibility for what happens on his watch, and things have improved vastly. Yes I am a good liberal, because I follow the facts nicely, don't I, and the fact is all three indexes are more than double what they were in Nov 2008, the job loss has reversed and now we are adding some and home values are creeping up, all economic improvements from what was handed over to Obama. Not bad for a guy that republicans want to pretend has such an adverse effect on business, but the fact of the matter is that the market the indicator of the strength of business indicates he has an effect that is twice as good as the last guy. I will tell how you know when somebody is bad for the economy, it's when you lose half your wealth, when your wealth doubles that's how you know this guy is good for the economy. It's a very simple matter of addition or subtraction, under the republican wealth was subtracted from people, and now after Obama took over wealth has been added. It's really pretty easy Jas1, see what you want is the guy that can add to your wealth not the guys that subtract from your wealth, that is kind of key to having a good economy.

I think Mr. Romney has to be himself, as there is no other way that you can connect with people enough to earn their vote. From what i've seen and read, Mr. Romney is a good husband and father. He's made the most of his opportunities, and i don't envy the success he's had. i congratulate him for it.

However, there has not been one thing he's said or done that made me think he is the right person to lead this country forward into prosperity unforetold. I think Mr. Romney's largest problems in this election are the same issues that ultimately foiled Sen. McCain's campaign in '08: Those values he truly holds in his heart he had to abandon in order to secure the nomination for his party. He would be able to take the stage tonight and speak from the heart about his beliefs and vision much more effectively had he not been forced to flip flop like a beached whale just to get the support of the republican base.

All those changes in his 'core values' have to make it hard on the guy to be himself when he knows the instant he isn't 'staunchly conservative', or 'unequivocally pro-life', or 'absolutely opposed to Obamacare', his base will flee from him like passengers on the titanic. That kind of pressure to be who you aren't has to play games with your mind, and make it next to impossible to be yourself...

What must Mr. Romney do tonight to have any chance?

      1. Prove that he is campaigning FOR something and that his campaign is not simply about "ABO - Anybody But Obama". When "The 43rd President of the United States" ran for re-election, he did so with similar job approval ratings. John Kerry lost the election, however, and I believe it's very much in part because he never ran FOR something. Instead, he merely ran AGAINST something. To have any chance, Mr. Romney must not make the same mistake.

      2. He must try and inspire people. You can be the smartest guy in the world and have the absolute greatest grasp of your policies and beliefs in the world but you must never underestimate people's desire and need to be inspired. You have to make people want to follow your lead. Remember Al Pacino's speech as Tony D'Amato in Any Given Sunday..."You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback."

If the president doesn't control the prices, why then did Senator Obama campaign on that topic? He could just as easily have said "The White House doesn't control gas prices." but instead he called it a looming crisis.

"For the well-off in this country, high gas prices are mostly an annoyance, but to most Americans they're a huge problem bordering on a crisis." Obama says in one notable video from April 25, 2008, which shows the future president speaking behind a podium at a gas station in Indianapolis.

The bottom line is America needs a leader who is experienced in turning around failing institutions. Mitt Romney is the only candidate with those skills. We also know Obama does not have the respect or support from other politicians which will be crucial in moving the country forward. We don't need 4 more years of blame we need 4 years of good leadership. ROMNEY/RYAN 2012

yeah, but how did Romney fix those failing businesses? By outsourcing jobs...which probably explains why he wants to outsouce Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, to the states, knowing full well that that will ultimately spell their endings...which has always been the republican plan for decades as part of their starve the beast programme.

Or Mitt Romney could just be the only politician in this election willing to make the hard choices to fix those entitlements before they bankrupt the country....

he never "Turned around" anything! He raided and offhshored jobs (and the profit he made raiding). That's what have to look forward to under a Romney administration.

score keeper, do your own research on the companies Bain Capital acquired and turned around. I'd like to see a politician fix our government instead of blame someone else...

Freudean Slip? I think not.....how ironic that the "national debt clock" was pictured right above the RNC sign saying "we built it!" Because the fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of our national debt grew during republican administrations, and the only time it ever decreased, was during a democratic administration.

Laughing my b_tt off here.....College football starts tonight! I wonder how many will be watching South Carolina vs Vanderbilt or some other game while Mr. Romney makes his grand entrance. Great planning, indeed.

        From Newsmax

"President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are in a dead heat in most national polls, but a new survey finds voters by 20 points think Obama will return to the White House for another four years.

The Rasmussen Reports poll found 55 percent of likely U.S. voters said they believe Obama will be re-elected in November, compared to 33 percent who think Romney will win. Another 13 percent were unsure who would triumph.

When it came to which candidate voters actually want to win, 46 percent were for Obama while 45 percent opted for the Republican nominee. Five percent said they were undecided, and 4 percent said they wanted another candidate.

Rasmussen’s poll of 11 key swing states, which Obama won in 2008 but could go either way this time, show the president had a 50 percent approval rating.

The swing states are Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The presidential survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted Aug. 26-27 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points."

Can NBC's broadcast license be taken away based on its obvious racism and sexism?

For Tuesday and Wednesday night sessions,

12 out of the 15 videos they posted on this site were by white males.

1 of the 11 speakers whose videos were not put up was a white male.

Yes...the racism and sexism is OBVIOUS.

...and the folks at FOX News aired ALL of the speeches of Ted Cruz, Mia Love, Brian Sandoval, Nikki Haley and Lucé Vela Fortuño, yes?

Hedley, you are aware that, with the exception of Artur Davis, MSNBC did not air anything that FOX News didn't air, yes?

Mia Love: MSNBC was in commercial. FOX News went to Shepard Smith in New Orleans for Hurricane Isaac.

Brian Sandoval: MSNBC had coverage of Hurricane Isaac. FOX News went to Sean Hannity interviewing Eric Cantor.

Ted Cruz: MSNBC had panel discussion. FOX News was in commercial and then had an interview with Scott Walker.

Artur Davis: MSNBC had panel discussion. FOX News aired the speech.

Nikki Haley: Both networks aired the speech.

Lucé Vela Fortuño: MSNBC had panel discussion. FOX News cut to Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly for discussion.

Wow, for a party that loves to boast "tough guys" like Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris, y'all do just love playing the victim, now, don't you?

What Mitt Romney should NOT do is strike the stars and stripes in favor of the flag of the Cayman islands.
