Ann Romney blames Democrats for GOP's poor standing with Latinos

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, the wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney shared her concerns about America's economic future. When asked about the headline-grabbing speech from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ann Romney said he "clearly came out and supported my husband." She was pleased with her RNC debut, as well. "My intent was to speak from my heart to other people's hearts and I think that happened," she said.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Ann Romney today placed blame on the Democratic Party for creating "biases" in the Latino community that, she argued, are anti-Republican.

The wife of the soon-to-be GOP presidential nominee said she, like many Republicans, understands and sympathizes with Latinos and how many came to this country for a better life.

"So it really is a message that would resonate well if they could just get past some of their biases that have been there from the Democratic machines that have made us look like we don’t care about this community. And that is not true," she said. "We very much care about you and your families and the opportunities that are there for you and your families."

But Democrats and even some Republicans -- like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush -- say that it has been the Republican Party's tone toward illegal immigration that has hurt the GOP with this demographic group.

Ann Romney talks about her marriage to Mitt Romney, her children and their lives together as she characterizes the GOP nominee as a trustworthy, compassionate leader.

For his part, Mitt Romney has been accused of using illegal immigration as a political weapon against his intra-party rivals.

In 2007-2008, Romney's campaign aired a TV ad with the candidate stating, "I opposed driver's licenses and in-state tuition for illegal aliens. As president, I'll oppose amnesty, cut funding for sanctuary cities and secure our borders. Legal immigration is great, but illegal immigration -- that's got to stop.”

NBC News' Andrea Mitchell joins Morning Joe to discuss Ann Romney's speech on the first night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. Mitchell was on hand at the Tampa Bay Times Forum for the speech.

During this GOP primary season, Romney touted the endorsement of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (who helped co-author Arizona’s controversial immigration law), and he recommended that illegal immigrants self-deport.

Speaking to nearly 150 members of the Latino Coalition at a luncheon as part of the convention, Ann Romney tried to emphasize the magnitude of the November election that pits her husband against President Barack Obama.

"It's also very important that the Latino community recognize how important this election is for them. And they are mistaken if they think they are going to be better off with Barack Obama as their president," she said. "There really is only one way for prosperity, for small business, and that is this is the simplest way I can say this: If Mitt Romney wins, America wins."

Obama won two-thirds of the Latino vote during the 2008 election. In the recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll, Obama held a similar lead over Romney among that demographic group.

Ann Romney said reaching out to specific pockets of the electorate, like the Latino community and females -- as she did this morning and in her speech Tuesday night -- is a key role of hers during her husband's campaign for the White House.

"For me, I feel like my importance in speaking out is making sure those coalitions that would nationally be going for another party wake up and say you better really look at the issues this time. You better really look at your future and figure out who's going to be the guy that's going to make it better for you and your children. And there is only one answer," she said.

Did Ann Romney humanize her husband? Did Chris Christie talk about himself too much? The National Journal's Major Garrett and The Washington Post's Eugene Robinson share their thoughts on the big RNC speeches Tuesday night.

Craig Romney, Mitt and Ann's youngest son, who introduced his mother at the luncheon, is fluent in Spanish and has played a big part in Hispanic outreach in the Sunshine State -- a state with 29 electoral votes up for grabs.

"It's very important that we get our message out in Florida to the Latino community, in particular. And I know this boy right here has been doing a great job of representing my husband with a great voice," Ann said "I know he’s been doing a lot of advertising, radio advertising and TV interviews and everything else. We’re so proud of him."

And showing off her motherly side, Ann Romney added:

"I have no idea what he’s ever saying when he’s speaking Spanish, but I’m so proud. I just sit there and beam when I hear him speak, as a mother always would."

Republicans are the ones passing legislation allowing police to pull someone over just because of the color of their skin.

Sorry Ann, but it's Republicans fault, including Gov. Romney for his "self deportation" stance and his support of Republicans who attack legal American citizens just because of the color of their skin.

Annie dear, Can you say SB1070! That's not a bill being pushed by Dems. Besides, Latino's can think for themselves, and they know a good man,"O", when they see one.

It is not our fault that we are changing the Election Laws to eliminate the Latino voters. It is not our fault that we want to deport all the Latino's that are in the US Illegally. It is not our fault that we want to cut off any benefits to the children born here in the United States.

The Democratic party should really pick up on the whole "self deportation" theme. Google self deportation and you will find that the idea was a joke, intended to ridicule the plans of Republicans and Gov. Pete Wilson with Prop. 187. The joke has since expanded to include making the economy so bad in the US that illegal immigrants will be running TO border patrol agents to be deported. Even South Park has done a satirical bit on it.

The funniest thing is, President George W. Bush and the Republicans did tank the economy and Willard Mitt Romney actually did talk about self deportation as a real, viable idea.

If the Romney/Ryan supporters get their way and Romney/Ryan win, the ultimate irony will happen and US citizens will be illegally crossing the border INTO Mexico, getting away from the destroyed US.

Too bad her husband didn't choose a Latino (Marco Rubio) as his running mate or there might have been some substance to back up her words !!

I think the poor standing Republicans have with Latinos has to do with the fact that too many Republicans would support a blanket deportation policy and cut social services, just as too many Democrats support blanket amnesty to deal with the complex problem of illegal immigration, which when combined with their smorgasbord (I know that's not Spanish but it fits) of social service giveaways to ANYONE, legal or illegal, who puts their hand out, puts them in better standing with the majority of the voting Latino community.

Illegal Immigration is a complex problem, and it's going to take complex solutions to solve it. I favor the deportation of Illegals who get caught thumbing their noses at other laws (besides the ones they ignored to get here) and some sort of conditional recognition and eventual back of the line path to citizenship for the majority of the rest. That doesn't make me liberal or conservative, just realistic !!

By making this claim she just proved how very out of touch and how "party line" she is. Yes, the Dems discuss the Republican policies in a negative fashion... but it's the policies that cause the GOP their poor standing with Latinos. Name one policy coming from the right that would make any Latino feel supported... there are none. And even if there were, they would make them show their papers before talking to them. The 4 years of hate and vitriol coming out of GOP policy and statements trumps Ann saying she "understands" every time.

If Miss Mittsy lacks this much communication in "his" personal life, how can we expect him to communicate with people in our government and foreign governments?

Either Miss Mittsy can not communicate, Ann Romney is completely oblivious, or they are both filthy liars. My guess is that it is a mix of the three.

I'm overwhelmed with the ignorance being displayed here on this post...again SB1070 does not allow for pulling people over at random here in Arizona...the police have to have just cause; a clear reason for pulling a motorist over or any person not in a vehicle. All you have to do is read the law...it's only 2 pages...not that difficult if you all really apply yourselves.

All of talk of racism...pull the race card when don't have anything else...because you certainly can't defend our President's record...almost $16 Trillion in national debt and the unemployment rate is 8.3%....and the ACA...not even fully rolled out...adding even more to our national debt...my 2 grandsons are already in the hole and they're not even school yet.

    #1.45 - Wed Aug 29, 2012 9:28 PM EDT

    Juanita,

You do understand that the three biggest reasons we're in debt are Medicare Part D, two wars, and the Bush Tax Cuts. None of which were implemented by Obama. Blaming him for the debt is disingenuous at best.

By the way, the police nead to have reasonable suspicion to check the immigration status, of someone who's pulled over, which increases the government's power to search and seize. And let's keep it real, what do you think that "reasonable suspicion" is based on. Just because the law doesn't say, "Go ahead and racially profile" doesn't mean it isn't allowing for exactly that. Furthermore, that "clear reason" for being pulled over, most likely has NOTHING to do with someone's immigration status, so where is that "reasonable suspicion" coming from again?

Here is what "resonates" about Mr. Romney and the GOP in general, and not only with Latinos but every voter who's not one of the 1%:

      Barack Obama's Main Accomplishment:

Signed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) Bill into Law allowing any US citizen to Be Detained WITHOUT trial (A federal Court Blocked it in May because it Violates the Constitution, but Obama is not trying to get it UNBLOCKED!). (Source: )

He has Killed HUNDREDS of Innocent people (Including 3 American Citizens) in Pakistan and Yemen with Drone Strikes (He’s Ordered even more drone strikes than Bush!).

The rate of National Debt under George Bush was Around $60 Billion a Month. Under Obama, it’s been $190 Billion a Month, so that would be Nearly $600 Per US Citizen (Thanks Obama!)

Obama Care: Page 22. MANDATES, The Government will Audit Book of ALL Employers who Self Insure. Page 50, Section 152, Health Care WILL be Provided to ALL Non US Citizens, Illegal or otherwise. Page 126, Lines 22-25, Employers Must Pay for Their Part time Employees Health Care AND Their Families. Page 127, Lines 1-16, The Government WILL Tell you How much Money you can Make.

Obama has By-passed Congress to Enable the DREAM Act (Unconstitutional to By-Pass Congress, and the Illegals he allowed to become Legal Citizens has Committed over 19 Murders and Over 142 Sex crimes).

Obama Claims he Campaigned in 57 States (Maybe he wasn’t Born in this Country?).

Ann "Marie Antoinette" Romney might be better off just baking cookies and smiling. Her foray into political policy has been an utter failure.

Contrast Ann, who followed Mitt to Brigham Young where she majored in French, married while still in school and complains of 'having to sell stock' as a young married couple... to Michelle Obama who was always a stand-out student, graduated from Princeton with honors and then went to Harvard Law School, had her own career and as First Lady has devoted herself to helping Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans and improving the health of America's children.

What has Ann Romney ever done for the poor? For minorities? for Hispanics? Yet she's practically begging for their votes with the lame promise that Mitt will make their lives better. HOW exactly? Her philosophy: Let them eat tacos.

Willard tells Latinos to self-deport and it is the Democrats fault? Whatever happened to your husband taking reponsibility for his own positions? Oh year, that right, Weathervane Willard flops so often on everything that even Gumby gets a backache watching Willard in action.

              Caesar - Its spelled Bestiality

Now let me explain the facts of life to you. When two animals are getting it on, it is not bestiality.

Bestiality is best descibed when, lets say, Gomer heads off to the barn to dittle a few chickens, and do the nasty with his favorite cow Bessie, before going to his weekly Tea party meeting..

Now, in nature, Jackass's and elephants have no interest in each other. The jackass can't reach that high, and it really pisses of the elephants.

Keep this dumb blond talking and Obama will win by default.

"Republicans poor standing with Latinos are the dems fault ?" Yeah, right, it has nothing whatsoever to do with republican legislatures and Governors who pass laws to detain and search Latinos to make sure they are in America legally, nothing to do with sheriffs who round up people suspected of being illegal aliens and nothing whatsoever to do with republicans opposition to allowing some children of illegal immigrants to get a temporary card to work in America

Though I share many of the Republicans feelings on free passes and compensation to law breakers and line crowders, I am rational enough to know republicans problems with Latinos are not the fault of democrats.

When will whiney Republicans stop blaming others for their mistakes and positions, and accept responsibility?
This attitude of entitlement is ridiculous. You are not held blameless when you continue policies that hurt the people. It is the height of hypocrisy for the wife of the no-longer-presumptive-nominee to point fingers elsewhere. The blame lies securely at the feet of the party that wants to build a fence along the entire border. You know, the one that calls them 'wetbacks'. The one that threw peanuts at a black camerawoman and said, "Here is how we feed the animals."

How is it that the democrats are the racists on this issue? The republicans are the party that have historically demonized minorities as a whole. Do you really think that blaming the other party of your party's actions is going to resonate? Unlike Ann Romney's strategy, we are not idiots and we won't believe lies just because she's telling them.

@Caesar Augustus - Racial identity is very important to minorities. We're not just voting pawns. The issues we face are unique to each group. For Latinos, the immigration discussion is very important. As African-Americans whos families were the products of being enslaved, welfare and education are very important to us. Each group is different and white-washing it and minimizing our unique histories diminishes that and makes Republicans look insensitive.

And regarding your sense of privilege in telling minorities what they should and shouldn't care about- Get over yourself. Who are you to tell minorities what to do? You're not our keeper and that's exactly why you're not getting our votes. Responses like this are the reason Republicans have such low standings with minorities. You just Don't. Get. It. I don't like people pulling the race card any more than you do but when we're talking about politics, you need to understand that race does inform a lot of factors in an election and different groups would like their interests recognized. Republicans haven't done that. Democrats have.

The similarity between Obama and Chavez is that they are on TV talking every day. I hope Obama does not start to talk about cooking rice and beans like Castro use to. I'm not kidding, Google it.

"I have no idea what he is saying" Hmm, somehow I think that is more truth about Ann Romney and her style of "mothering" then she has ever told. Hard to know those kids when you are out and about, and nannies and boarding schools do your work for you.

Queen Ann, so divorced from reality: it is the Democrat's fault? REALLY? After the Republican machine has been calling the Latinos parasites, writing laws that they must present papers, and trying to deport them? Good, Annie, you stay on that line, won't you?

The rest of us will laugh ourselves silly.

By the way, Ann, when did one of your "children" serve this nation in the wars? Or is that just for "you people".

I grew upset with Ann Romney wagging her finger last night and telling us how to raise our children:

"Do we want to raise our children to be afraid of success?" - Ann Romney

I would ask if Romney's parents raised him to be a liar.

What kind of example is Romney setting for his children by making the main theme of his convention a deliberate misrepresentation of President Obama's words?

I teach my son that Honesty is the most important thing, and that Trust is earned not given.

Ann wants us to trust Mitt? He hasn't earned it.

DENNIS MILLER: I don’t dislike President Obama. I just think that it’s been an inept four years. And you know, I’m just calling it as I see it. I know you like him. What am I missing over the last four years? It just does not seem that good to me.

JAY LENO: Well, I think he has compassion for regular people. I think that’s what -- I think if the Republican Party is missing anything, it’s this sort of war on women, and, and compassion-

MILLER: War on women? With Sandra Fluke? She’s 30, for God’s sake. She’s still in school. She wants me to kick in ten bucks a month for her birth control? Here, I’ll give you ten. Just shut up for a second, okay? [Cheers and applause] This woman, Jay, the war on women, for God’s sake.

LENO: I think it is. I think it is.

MILLER: The chick’s like Moan of Arc, come on. [Laughter]

All 5 of Romney's sons registered with the Selective Service as Contientious Objectors, at their daddy's request. Serving their church as missionaries in France or Switzerland or Florida is much more important to the Romney family than serving their country.

                          Romney and the Vietnam War

1965: Mitt Romney protests in favor of the Vietnam War and draft.

1965-1969: Applied for and received 4 (four) draft deferments. Apparently he was cycling around Spain handing out religious literature.

1994- Romney quote: "It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft."

Yeah, he only "removed" himself from the United States.

2007- Romney quote: "I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam."

Huh...so Romney "longed to be in Vietnam"...apparently he didn't "long" hard enough....

                          ...apparently...

What branch of service did YOU serve in, Caesar? I grew up in the Air Force, my father AND uncle served during Vietnam, my grandfathers were in WWII, Great-Grandfathers in WWI ... all the way back to the REVOLUTIONARY war. I have cousins who volunteered in the Air Force and Navy (I personally am disabled so I couldn't serve) and I will let my son know when the time comes that serving his country in the military is a proud tradition in our family. Now, I'll admit that I didn't register for the Selective Service, but as I'm a WOMAN (and now over 40) it just wasn't something that anybody would have taken seriously. Most of the boys/men I dated either were former military dependents or former military themselves. Two served in or during the FIRST Gulf War.

Granted, I am a moderate Independent, but your constant harping about military service has me curious about YOUR service or your (I suspect) lack thereof.

I mean comparing this one to the Regan convention years is like comparing it to a Hillbilly outlier hoedown.

You know the truth when you hear it don't you. I mean they sent Ann out to humanize Romney and she make him sound like a machine. All the previous speakers highlighted "Love" then Chris Christie came out saying the opposite. We learned nothing about Mitt's polices nor about him specifically which is what I thought the convention was all about. It's a mess and you know it but it's OK if you can't acknowledge it in mixed company we understand.

Mitt takes a stand on both sides of every issue...examples:

"The Arizona immigration policy is a good model" – Mitt Romney.

"I didn't really support the Arizona immigration policy" – Mitt Romney.

“The Massachusetts healthcare plan should be a model for the nation” – Mitt Romney.

“Healthcare reform should be left to the states” – Mitt Romney.

"Let Detroit go bankrupt" -Mitt Romney.

"I'll take a lot of credit for saving the auto industry" -Mitt Romney.

“I believe Roe v Wade has gone too far.” – Mitt Romney.

“Roe v Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.”– Mitt Romney.

“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose.” – Mitt Romney.

“I never really called myself pro-choice.” – Mitt Romney.

“It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam.” – Mitt Romney.

“I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and represent our country there.” – Mitt Romney.

“I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.” – Mitt Romney.

“Ronald Reagan is… my hero.” – Mitt Romney.

Caesar - I never said I was captain of a debate team, I said I was on one. As far as me serving men on the streets is concerned, I don't have the energy for that anymore. You never answered the question Cat asked you about which branch of the service you served in. Oh, and by the way, what do you do for a living? Are you married? Do you have children" Do you have any hobbies? Just curious - I'm trying to humanize you a little

I must say NDD's comment was incredibly mean..... and hilarious!

However, I do Ann credit for even speaking out on something because it gives us great insight onto the political partner and whether we like them or no. This woman obviously wants to be first lady. Unlike Barbara Bush, she really has very little sense of humor. Unlike Laura Bush, she doesn't know when to shut up. Unlike either of the Bush ladies, she has no idea of what her son is saying in Spanish. It is when she starts to plead and try to cajole that she almost sounds bratty, but she has a right to speak.

And the more she does....the more we seem to not want to know...or do we? Our nation has grown up so much, what would we do with a Mrs. Cleaver like that?

Sorry, Mrs. Romney. The Republican Party has alienated Latinos, gays, Blacks, women, the poor and the elderly with the harsh policies that they have put forth over the years.

How are Republicans supposed to win over Latinos, when they already rely on stoking the rage of poor whites against immigrants to win elections?

                                1. Re-write your party platform and eliminate the racist, sexist, misogynist, religiously intolerant and other discrimination parts.
                                2. Get a divorce from all the "people" that are corporations.
                                3. Bring your party into the 21st centuty.
                                4. Recognize that we live in a secular society, not everyone is Jesus crazy.
                                5. Reread what Jesus said. He had this thing for social justice.
                                6. Get rid of the mad hatters
                                7. Make your candidates accountable and transparent. No tax evasion hanky-panky if they want to run.
                                8. Practice what you preach.
                                9. Respect women
                                10. Respect Latinos and other minorities.

Yes, exactly. It is not our fault, and in fact, the Democratic party has been advocating for women and minorities this whole time. To try to shift blame from the Republicans for their own actions is inexcusable.

These last few nights at the RNC have been about as entertaining and inspiring as a bad meal. Ann Romney and the Republican platform of twisted words, twisted meaning, bad hair, and just plain lame! Republican's blamming Democrats for their image within the hispanic community is classic. Wonder how those Latinos in AZ feel about what Ann Romney said? As in the last RNC, big names, big words, big accusations, big dreams, big promises, and they still have no clue as to what is best for America. They do know what's best for them, and they will say whatever it takes to get control.

Just wait till Obama gets Romney in a National Debate. The sparks are gunna fly and Americans will see the real Romney and what a dead fish he is.

                                      Obama wins in a landslide.

I took this to be something that he stated in the primary run. So..... he himself tried to turn Hispanics against the party when it was against a party foe, but now that he is in the big show, the Dems are the villains that are poisoning the Hispanics against his party? My head spins trying to keep up with all that noise.

The truth is that any millionaire/billionaire latino will be better off with lower taxes. Mitt's their guy.

I think that's what she meant.

Oh yes, the blame game. The least she could do is at least be honest about how racism is very much alive and rampant in the Conservative party today, and how tolerated it seems to be. Of course, honesty is not a Conservative trait.

Five seconds until someone derails this with "WELL, DEMOCRATS ARE RACIST TOO!!"

Do you call it racist when two people at the RNC throw peanuts at a black CNN camerawomen and say, "That's how we feed the animals"? I do.

Of course, right now, they are shredding records and replacing those delegates. I think Oliver North had to be called in.

So THAT'S how you win the Latino vote., have the Romney spawn speak Spanish! George W. Bush spoke some Spanish and that worked out well for Latino's, didn't it? Gee, I guess with the spawn speaking Spanish and Trump having a fine relationship with "the blacks", they really are a big tent aren't they? LOL

But Ann they were televised, and they were ugly and nasty. You remember wall's with razor or barbed wire, armed soldiers, moats, flying dragons, you get the idea now, we all did!

Sorry Ann, I do not know a single Republican who sympathizes and identifies with any minority who has come to our country for a better life. Republicans I know (and that is MANY), are only concerned with sending them back to their country.

For the Record Mrs. Romney, the Hispanic and Latin communities should never be called "they"... period. The RNC does not represent the overall makeup of this country. The republican party has constantly expressed a desire to return this country back to a status that it was founded upon, however that place in time is marred with the stench of slavery, the heartache of woman's suffrage, the dominance of an all white society and the separation of social, economic, cultural and ethnic groups with elite whites making the decisions and everyone else feeling the pain of their decisions.

It's easy to say your husband worked hard to gain his wealth... even easier when he is white, a male, the son of a political parent, attended private schools, and has opportunities afforded him that most others don't get. I do not negate your struggles with breast cancer or MS, but it is easier to recover and fight these illnesses when you have resources to experiment with the alternative treatment plans money can afford. For the vast majority of Americans, we don't get those same opportunities, we don't share the RNC's views on a woman's right to decide what to do with her body, and we can't go ask "mummy and daddy" to finance our ivy league education.

You want to impress me and get my vote: live a life that reflects care and concern for all people, not just the white faces and the few specks of color shown on tv at your convention.

PS: The two hecklers who were removed from throwing food and calling the black CNN employee an animal is representative of the climate the RNC has created and allowed. Shame on you for not denouncing their actions and having charges pressed!

YES, let us welcome our foreign brothers and sisters to the U.S.

And let us ensure that they are afforded real wages by their employers

And also ensure the employers that hire them pay for their medical costs

And tax the employers for the addition use of resources, such as education of illegal's children, food stamps, rent assistance, day care, crime, etc, etc

Who wouldn't want illegals to be treated fairly? It just shouldn't be the taxpayers picking up the tab.

                                          great post Valarie,

While Ann R. seems like a nice lady, she should now remove herself from the chats with interviewers.

Her husband has dug his own hole, over so many days, months that there is no rope or ladder long enough to bring him up.

Last week ... he opened up another attack, with a joke as in NO ONE HAS ASKED FOR MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE. And I was thinking----robots do not have birth certificates. This one is programmed by Grover and Ryan and the neocons..... Not his own man at all

                                          Valerie Williams -

Well written response - you touched every important issue and expressed yourself beautifully. One of your important statements, regarding Ann's breast cancer and MS - you are spot on. Most Americans could not afford the treatments, surgery and experimental drugs for her illnesses. My cousin's wife has MS and I know that only those who can afford the best treatments get the drugs. As far as breast cancer, I watched my sister suffer through chemo, radiation, and other ugly medical side effects - without insurance she would not have lived the 21 months she had after diagnosis. Not all Americans have good insurance, some none - where would they stand in a Romney/Ryan administration? Bringing up another topic - birth control, invetro, etc. Most of the Republicans are against many forms of birth control and invetro for childless couples. However, it has been stated that some of the Romney grandchildren were conceived in this manner. Would a Romney/Ryan administration deny others the chance of becoming parents? Ann Romney and others cannot dig Mitt and Paul Ryan and other Republican/TP members from their holes - the party set itself up for this criticism and rightfully so.
