First Thoughts: Mixed messages

Mixed messages: Both Ann Romney and Chris Christie gave fine speeches, but they created a disjointed message… Christie raises the bar for Romney… Last night showcased the GOP’s governors and its diverse candidates/officials… Isaac slams into Louisiana… Previewing Ryan’s speech… Is it really Mitt Romney’s party?... On the trail: Romney delivers speech to American Legion conference  in Indianapolis, while Obama stumps in Charlottesville… And did the Sea of Galilee story claim its first victim?

Individually, Tuesday's two big primetime speeches accomplished what they set out to do, but in making the soft and the hard sell on the same night, did the Romney campaign try to do too much? The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.

TAMPA, FL -- Ann Romney humanizing her husband and delivering a well-received speech, check. Chris Christie hitting the Democrats and President Obama, as well as making the case that leadership requires tough choices, check. Individually, last night’s two primetime speeches here at the Republican convention accomplished what they set out to do. But taken together, they represented a clash in tone -- with Ann Romney telling the audience she wanted to talk about the power of love, and with Christie declaring, “Tonight, we’re going to choose respect over love.” Christie later added, “Our ideas are right for America, and their ideas have failed America.” Either speech could have concluded the night, but the two addresses didn’t mix well; it was like a meal of blueberry pancakes and ribeye steak, or a dessert of pickles and ice cream. There wasn’t a unifying message, so the parts seemed greater than the whole. Make no mistake: The Romney campaign can take pride in both speeches. And the time constraints and Monday’s cancellation didn’t give them a better alternative. But two polar-opposite addresses created a disjointed message.

*** Christie raises the bar for Romney: So if there’s criticism of Christie’s speech, it wasn’t in the substance -- but rather in the fact that it wasn’t the lasting moment after Ann Romney’s address. In a way, it was classic New Jersey: an interruption. One thing that Christie’s keynote speech did was raise the bar for Romney on Thursday. “You see, Mr. President -- real leaders don’t follow polls,” he said last night. “Real leaders change polls.” But is that a message more suited for Romney or Christie himself? After all, Romney is a politician who has often taken the easier path in politics (running as a supporter of abortion rights in Massachusetts, opposing them when he started eyeing the presidency, downplaying his health-care law, not answering if he would overturn President Obama’s new deportation policy for young undocumented immigrants).

*** Showcasing the GOP’s governors and its diverse candidates: But if the convention planners achieved one goal from last night, it was showcasing the party’s young governors and its diverse candidates and officials. Look at the governors who spoke last night: John Kasich, Mary Fallin, Bob McDonnell, Scott Walker, Brian Sandoval, and Nikki Haley. (In fact, Walker probably brought the crowd to its feet more than any other speaker last night.) And then there was the diversity: Mia Love, Kelly Ayotte, Ted Cruz, and Artur Davis. (Outside of Ann Romney, Christie, and Walker, Love’s short speech might have been the most impressive of the night.) Other things that struck us: Rick Santorum’s speech didn’t deliver the way the Romney campaign had seemed to promise (the welfare attack on Obama fell flat with the audience), and Cruz (with his walking around the stage) appeared to try too hard.

*** Isaac slams into Louisiana: We’ll say a final word about last night: It came as Hurricane Isaac slammed into Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. “Hurricane Isaac spun into the southern Louisiana coast late Tuesday, sending floodwaters surging and unleashing fierce winds as residents hunkered down behind boarded-up windows,” the AP writes. “New Orleans calmly waited out another storm on the eve of Hurricane Katrina's seventh anniversary, hoping the city's strengthened levees would hold.” Ann Romney asked the audience to “hope and pray” that everyone on Gulf Coast was safe. But outside of that, the references to Isaac were sparse.

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro recap the first night of Republican speeches from Ann Romney and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and preview vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's speech to the crowd in Tampa.

*** Previewing Ryan’s speech: We now turn to tonight’s schedule of activities at the GOP convention, which will be highlighted by Paul Ryan’s speech accepting the party’s vice-presidential nomination. Already a full-fledged star in the Republican Party, Ryan has the potential to rock the crowd here in Tampa. After all, he can do it with biography (his family, the loss of his father, his love of hunting) as well as policy (the Ryan budget). And it will be the biggest speech of his political career so far. But let's also not get too carried away about the VP nominee speech; Palin's was the exception. (Beyond her, name another impactful VP nominee speech. The memorable convo speeches are almost all keynotes, spouses and top of tickets, not the VP.) The Romney camp says that, in Wisconsin, it will hold 20 watch parties of Ryan’s speech, and that there will be a special event in his hometown of Janesville. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has produced this web video before Ryan’s speech tonight. Other stories we’ll be watching tonight: Will Mike Huckabee say anything about Todd Akin? And how will Condi Rice be received? We can’t think of her ever making a true public political speech before…

*** Wednesday’s schedule (the theme is “We change it”):

7:00 pm ET hour: Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul
8:00 pm hour: John McCain, John Thune, Rob Portman,
9:00 pm hour: Luis Fortuno, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Huckabee
10:00 pm hour: Condi Rice, Susana Martinez, Paul Ryan

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie addresses the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012.

*** Is this really Romney’s party? Don’t miss this analysis from the Tampa Bay Times’ Adam Smith: “Mitt Romney on Tuesday officially became the leader of the Republican Party. What's unclear is how much it's really his Republican Party. Talk to delegates in and around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, and they're more likely to gush about Chris Christie or Marco Rubio than their nominee. Ask them to explain Romney's agenda and ideology and they point enthusiastically to running mate Paul Ryan's. ‘The party's not defined by the top of the ticket anymore. The party is defined by the broader community of people who choose to associate and participate,'' said Matt Kibbe, chairman of FreedomWorks, the grass roots organizing group aligned with tea party conservatives. ’It's not so much about Mitt.’”

*** On the trail: The day before his big acceptance speech, Romney addresses the American Legion’s national conference in Indianapolis, IN… And President Obama finishes his two-day swing to college towns, speaking in Charlottesville, VA  30 minutes later at 3:30 pm ET.

*** Did that dip in the Sea of Galilee claim its first victim? Arizona held its primaries last night, and David Schweikert (R) defeated Ben Quayle (R) in the state’s member-vs.-member contest.Taegan Goddard's Political Wire spots this in the Arizona Republic's write-up  of the race. “As ballots rolled in, Quayle campaign volunteer Paul Gorman attributed the loss to fallout from a recent story about Congress members partying in Israel, including one who stripped naked to swim. Quayle was on the trip but said he only took a brief, reverent dip in the Sea of Galilee.” The race was always going to be tough for Quayle, but the timing of the Sea of Galilee story sure didn’t help. In other news out of Arizona, we have our Senate match up -- Jeff Flake (R) vs. Richard Carmona (D).

There were so many lies, more lies and damned lies flying around this country last night...

PS: Where was the message of hope last night? What vision does the GNOP have moving ahead?

All I heard was anger & hatred to anyone who doesn't march lock-step with their plan to take this country back to the good old days in the 1950's...

ABOUT MEDICAID: Paul Ryan's "plans for Medicare - embraced by the GOP, and endorsed by Mitt Romney - look mild by comparison; like the difference between a manicure and an amputation." (Terrance Heath)

Paul Ryan's plan guts Medicaid by repealing Obamacare, plus a further cut of $750 Billion :-

1. Between 14 and 19 million people, young & old, will lose their Medicaid by 2022 (n-p Kaiser Family foundation).
2. Medicaid will be a block-grant/voucher program that doesn't factor in rising health care costs, or state budgets ~ causing the program to evaporate.

Medicaid starts getting the chop next year under Ryan, followed by Medicare ten years hence. And though massive, these cuts still won't produce the lower health care numbers Ryan says he is after.

Maybe Mr. Ryan's mission is more about privatizing government services?

Two excellent speeches from Ann Romney and Chris Christie last night.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the Hillaryous FR lefty liberal mournful laments, insults, pissing and moaning, and whining and complaining about the speeches. I’m especially looking forward to Nasty Dumbfuxes bile-filled comments about “Queen Ann” and “Gov. Krispy Kreme”. Those kind of comments are what has won her the annual trailer park “Ms. Congeniality” title from all her neighbors for 10 years straight.

Last night, before I went to bed I decided to check-in here at NBC/Newsvine. When I opened the thread entitled "GOP headliners cast Romney as relatable and decisive", I had to stifle a laugh. Here on FR, you can always tell when liberal panties are in wads by the excessive use of CAPITALIZATION and boldface in the left-leaning comments. Judging by the sheer volume of these types of comments, it was obvious that the first day of the Republican National Convention was a success in working these nutjobs up into a complete frenzy. Truly hilarious. ROFLMAO!

Liberals: The truth hurts, doesn't it?

About that Christie Speech

Chris Christie didn't mention Obama's name even once in his keynote address last night. He didn't have to. Because the forward looking reform agenda that he articulated so well was in such obvious contrast to the absentee leadership in the current White House. Even stray left wing dolts who may have clicked the wrong channel could understand who the unnamed villian was. Maybe because of lines like this:

"Real leaders don't follow polls. Real leaders change polls."

Interesting line. Superficially glib to the jaundiced ears of the left, but fraught with deep meaning to anyone concerned about the challenges we face at this moment in our history. A moment that cries out for strong leadership where there has been none. A moment that will determine whether we continue to be the master of our destiny going forward, or its wobbly kneed victim.

Christie drew this sharp contrast throughout his speech, here's another powerful line: "They believe in teachers unions. We believe in teachers." Probably just another glib remark to leftist ears, but an idea that succinctly captures how the country has been damaged by institutions that are more concerned with advancing their own interests at the expense of the constituencies they are supposed to serve. And an idea that resonates strongly with more Americans than the left will ever admit.

But the part I liked the best was when Christie linked our moment in history with the Greatest Generation. Just as those folks answered history's call in their time, now it's our turn to do the same. Time to stand up and make the tough choices that will preserve the American way of life for the next generation and those that follow.

That's leadership, and that's what Republicans are offering to a country desperate for same.

Meanwhile, back in the real world the Barry economy still sucks:

Q2 GDP got a little, tiny, bit better with the second estimate released this morning.

Even so, the best Chicago BS spinmeisters will not be able to use going from a really, really dismal GDP growth number to a "slightly better" really, really dismal GDP growth number to argue Barry is doing a good job on the economy and deserves a second term. Only the lowest of the low-information lefty liberals voters would buy that story.

Barry, you're doin' a heck of a job.

US Growth Inches Along With GDP Posting 1.7% Gain

Reuters

| 29 Aug 2012 | 08:36 AM ET

The U.S. economy fared slightly better than initially thought in the second quarter, but the pace of growth remained too slow to shut the door on further monetary easing from the Federal Reserve.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said in its second estimate on Wednesday as stronger export growth offset a pull-back in restocking by businesses wary of sluggish domestic demand.

That was up from last month's 1.5 percent estimate and in line with economists' expectations. The economy grew at a 2.0 percent pace in the January-March period.

The report also showed that after-tax corporate profits unexpectedly rose at 1.1 percent rate after sinking 8.6 percent in the first quarter.

While the composition of economic activity was fairly favorable, growth remains well below the 2-2.5 percent rate required every quarter to hold the unemployment rate steady, which could compel policymakers at the U.S. central bank to offer additional stimulus at their Sept. 12-13 meeting.

There was one more sign last night that MSDNC is in financial trouble. I have observed before that those commercials promoting the prime time Stooges lineup are ad slots that they couldn’t sell to paying customers. I realize that every network uses some ad slots to promote its own shows, but, when they become inescapable because they are using hundreds of slots a day for self-promotion, month after month after month, it becomes obvious they are filling up unused/unsold air time.

Also, I have noticed a trend of bring on guests that are already on the MSDNC payroll such as Melissa Harris-Perry and that dweeb, Chris Hayes. That tells me two things: 1) they are even using their non-ad-slot air time to try to promote shows that no one is watching, and 2) they can’t fill up their non-ad-slot air time with credible guests not already on their payroll. I guess there are some lefty liberal talking heads that consider going on MSDNC to be a reputational risk to themselves.

The newest sign of financial difficulties is how they are covering the RNC, which is mostly from their NY studios. The only prime time MSDNC Stooge I have seen actually covering it in person is Shemp Mathews. Looks like the travel budget is in austerity mode. (Yeah, Morning Joe is there in full force, but, that show is not directed at their core targeted audience of lefty liberals)

Comcast is in the business of making money for its shareholder’s, not making lefty liberals feel good about themselves. My bet is you will see a lot of changes around MSDNC after the election in an attempt to make it financially viable.

“Hope and Change”

I liked to flip the channels while watching the convention last night. It was interesting to see how different networks used the moment. Curiously enough MSNBC had Chris Mathews and Rachael Maddow (and others) talking while all of the Republican minority speakers were on stage.

What you may have missed by not changing channels and looking around:

Democratic Rep. Artur Davis (4 terms in Congress) spoke. He's an African-American representative from Louisiana whom was the person to 2nd President Obama's nomination at the DNC convention of 2008. He spoke about how we all voted with our hearts and hopes that the US could realign and move forward, but that it clearly didn't happen and it was time to change leaders. I'd guess his speech transcript is online if you want to read it. MSNBC- Didn't show him at all. CNN (Post speech) had an analyist say that he "was a fake democrat" and "never was a democrat." So a "fake democrat" nominates the President and is in office for 16 years as a democrat, but if he was fake wouldn't the democrats have run someone against him so that he was out of office.

The same was true for Mayor Love. She wasn't shown. And others. Look it up.

backhouse

those 44 million don't have insurance now. 10 million don't want health insurance, 10 million who want health insurance still can't get it because the no pre-existing conditions clause meant that Insurance had to offer policies, but that doesn't mean those people could afford what really amounts to pre-paid medical expenses.

Remaining 24 million are either illegals or people who would like to have an insurance plan, but cannot afford it because they are unemployed, under employed, or simply cannot afford insurance.

And BTW

the ACA Mandates increased insurance rates making it more impossible for those who would like to buy their own insurance even further out of reach

Only MSDNC could distort the speeches in this fashion. Ann Romney spoke from the heart about her personal experiences and her life's journey with her husband. Chris Christie talked from the heart about his background and his challenges as a Republican Governor in a blue state. Obviously, their backgrounds are different and their messages would be different. Surely, they did not get together beforehand and compare notes to make sure they were saying the same thing.

But the "writers" of First Read try desperately to pick at something, anything to suggest the messages were not independently strong or cohesive. They question everything about a Republican candidacy without ever questioning Obama's failed record.

MSDNC is clearly "in the tank" for Obama, and their twisted, convoluted stories reveal their lack of objectivity.

It must have irked Obama-Shama-Lama-Ding-Dongs to no end last night when Artur Davis, Obama’s campaign co-chairman, and the person who seconded his nomination in 2008, took the podium.

Davis is not only a former Democrat (like me).

But, he is also an African American who speaks openly of his disillusionment with Obama. He pointed out a statistic you won’t see here at FIRST READ; that is, 9% of those who voted for Obama in 2008 (including me) do not intend to vote for him again in 2012.

A good physical appearance in a shiny new suite, good public speaking abilities, and a penchant for making speeches that stir up a crowd do not necessarily equate to good leadership skills. Obama is living proof of that.

We have serious economic problems in this country, and Obama’s “share the wealth” approach isn’t going to fix them.

We need someone who’ll take charge and put businesses, both big and small, back in the driver’s seat. You can’t tax one particular segment of society in such a fashion that everyone else benefits from it. Surely, those who bear the brunt of that sort of thing will pass it along to those who purchase their goods and services. Obama talks about things that have been tried and don’t work. Well, that’s one of them.

Also, Obama talked about the energy problems we face when he ran in 2008.

But, he hasn’t done a damned thing to alleviate the absolutely obscene price of gas in this country. (….and it’s getting worse as time passes along.) Sooner or later it’s a problem someone has to address.

Obama said the 2008 election wasn’t about whether or not you were “better off now, than you were four years ago."

He said it was about where you would be four years from then.

Well, it’s four years from then. So guess what question needs to be asked now?.....Are you better off than you were four years ago?

Moreover, is our country better off than it was four years ago and are we heading in the right direction?

If you are honest with yourself, you know the answer to that question.

My point is that we all understand that some media outlets have "preferences"/biases, but I found it a bit shocking that MSNBC chose to enforce their current dialog of the RNC being only white people by excluding to show any minority speakers at the convention.

They further showed thier colors by their comments post addresses. Maddow commented immediately after one speaker that his comment on supporting the military appeared to be anti-gay. Neat one.

I'd suggest anyone with an open mind to do some channel flipping during the addresses and see what is being shown while the speakers talk. Do they show bulletpoints of the speech at the bottom? Factoids (what kind of factoids)? What are their first comments coming out of a speech? When they round table discuss the addresses, what are they looking for? It's quite enlightening.

Guess we'll have to see what the Dems bring up next week. They have been avoiding theirs the entire campaign. He is the incumbent. He should have one. Romney/Ryan aren't in office yet and I am sure their plan will be heard soon. When in competition you don't let your adversary know your next play. They hijack it. About Christie's speech...

For all of you who think he's so inspiring, how about looking at how his "leadership" has affected New Jersey. Tax cuts to millionaires, sky-high unemployment, gutting the education budget, and higher property taxes. He deflects all this with a bombastic attitude, but his ad his party's policies are useless.

The Republicans must think we're stupid. They are responsible for massive debt, the killing of hundreds of thousands of people through pointless war, the deregulation of the financial markets, and now they want to gut Medicare and Medicaid. But it's the President's fault that he didn't dig us out of the Repub abyss fast enough, so we should let them back in so they can finish the job of bringing this country and it's people down.

Guess we'll have to see what the Dems bring up next week. They have been avoiding theirs the entire campaign.

You mean like how Ryan has anyone who asks him questions that remotely resemble criticism arrested? That kind of avoidance?

Romney/Ryan aren't in office yet and I am sure their plan will be heard soon. When in competition you don't let your adversary know your next play.

It already has been heard. More tax cuts for those at the top, guts to spending on programs that benefit the middle and lower classes, exorbitant spending on defense, and a higher deficit.

The Republicans must think we're stupid.

Look at this board, then examine the validity of that assertion.

Here is Barack Obama's Main Accomplishments

Barack Obama's Main Accomplishments:

Signed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) Bill into Law allowing any US citizen to Be Detained WITHOUT trial (A federal Court Blocked it in May because it Violates the Constitution, but Obama is not trying to get it UNBLOCKED!).

He has Killed HUNDREDS of Innocent people (Including 3 American Citizens) in Pakistan and Yemen with Drone Strikes (He’s Ordered even more drone strikes than Bush!).

The rate of National Debt under George Bush was Around $60 Billion a Month. Under Obama, it’s been $190 Billion a Month, so that would be Nearly $600 Per US Citizen (Thanks Obama!).

Obama Care: Page 22. MANDATES, The Government will Audit Book of ALL Employers who Self Insure. Page 50, Section 152, Health Care WILL be Provided to ALL Non US Citizens, Illegal or otherwise. Page 126, Lines 22-25, Employers Must Pay for Their Part time Employees Health Care AND Their Families. Page 127, Lines 1-16, The Government WILL Tell you How much Money you can Make.

Obama has By-passed Congress to Enable the DREAM Act (Unconstitutional to By-Pass Congress, and the Illegals he allowed to become Legal Citizens has Committed over 19 Murders and Over 142 Sex crimes).

Obama Claims he Campaigned in 57 States (Maybe he wasn’t Born in this Country?).

What's REALLY apparent is that the GOPers & TeaBaggers aren't pro romney, they're entirely anti-Obama & anti-Democratic.

The GOP/TeaBagger parties aren't the parties of ideas. They're the parties of anger, resentment and obstructionism.

A slab of bacon could get the conservative / teabagger vote if they thought it could unseat President Obama.

Meanwhile, back in the real world the Barry economy still sucks:

yep and not one will bother to discuss the harsh realities of Obamao's failures. reducing deficits, laser focus, shovel ready. Yep all grand failures. No they want to talk about tax records, Ann's dresses, Christy's weight. You know the important stuff. Bust out the Greek pillars. Liberalism is an Epic Failure.

Hey Joe, Fisty wants to talk about Ann's dresses and Christy's weight. Do you think IT would talk about its moo moo or its weight? Or perhaps the luxurious methlab IT inhabits in the Lower Roselle trailer park?

I have to admit I like Christie, I do not like many of his policies, and I disagree with him on many things but for the most part he does not upset me. I thought his speech was well done. The MS-NBC coverage kept saying how he sounded angry, I did not really see that, I even thought he was rather pleasant. After speaking with a few friends I realized it was clearly some sort of Jersey thing where we are used to people speaking in those tones (Doesn't bold well for us).

I did agree also that there was two different messages between his and Anne's speech, but I was not really a fan of hers to be quite honest. I believe it was from the heart, but come the end of the day she spoke of problems I did not think she was capable of understanding. Which is perfectly okay, except she was trying to sell us on the idea that she did. The "We love you women" line seemed a tad bit desperate as well.

The one problem I did have with the speeches I saw was come the end, I still got nothing about Romney. Nothing more was revealed. I do believe he is not the blank stare we see on our television screens, but it just has not been demonstrated. I think his wife tried but did not deliver. I think once they stop with the "we are just like you" rhetoric, Romney can be more comfortable and we can get a better picture of who he is.

Here is the result of how the GNOP supports play with others when allowed out in public;

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Two people were removed from the Republican National Convention Tuesday after they threw nuts at an African-American CNN camera operator and said, "This is how we feed animals."

Multiple witnesses observed the exchange and RNC security and police immediately removed the two people from the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

The convention released a statement saying, "Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated."

CNN also acknowledged the incident, saying, "CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment."

The convention began its first full session on Tuesday after being delayed a day by what was then Tropical Storm Isaac. It continues through Thursday when Mitt Romney is expected to accept the party's nomination as its presidential candidate.

Despicable!!!

I want to see you all defend this!

The Republicans do not care about skin color or nationality. We treat everyone as American. I know you Libbie's can't understand that but its true. We do not want to divide into splinter groups and we do not feel the need to Pander to groups. If you vote for a President on one issue ie abortion or illegal immigration then shame on you. Your a simple minded person and do not have the issues of America at heart.

If you vote to strengthen America and do whats right their is only one choice. The current cavern that was dug by this administration has to be filled in. Stop digging and suck it up. Our future depends on it.

That's not a legitimate question; it's just empty Republican spin. The counter-spin is: Given how bad the economy is, shouldn't Romney be ahead by a wide margin rather than trailing Obama in most polls? The polls are where they are due to a lot of factors. One of them is Romney's repellant personality, which adoring speeches by his wife aren't going to change.

In typical "me first" form,...you've scoffed at the idea that EACH generation has contributed to the future generation's assets - it takes a sound infrastructure to maintain 'greatness'. But you are content to just say no to progress, to infrastructure, to jobs - whatever - as long as Obama gets NO legislative victories and the unemployment needle doesn't move and he's a one termer.

The speeches last night were a total microcosm of the Republicans that post on FR everyday - a bunch of negative nellies with ZERO optimism. It's great for stirring up the Fear Sector in your party; but I fell pretty confident it doesn't speak to the middle and certainly not to the left. Good luck with the Dope and Change your party is peddling.

Pulleze. It seems more like Ann Romney for president. This woman will set women's rights back, not forward.

She seems like a power hungry, bleached blonde mislead by her husband's cult.

I can not bear the thought of seeing this woman as first lady. You can not convince me this woman will be good for women's rights.

Christie is also a hypocrite. He needs to gain control of his destiny by going to weight watchers to regain his health and not preach to the rest of us about destiny. We know his future destiny is not going to be good health-wise unless he cleans up his diet.

I don't want people who can not take care of their health running the country. We need healthy, good examples in the White House, not greedy rich hypocrites with hunger for power permeating their speech and actions.

Please, please not more Candy Rice. I have been so over-exposed to her and Bush baby that I am allergic to the image. Take these women off my tele and give me Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Clinton, two people who have earned my respect and are not hypocrites.

Jen, that was a tough night for you last night wasnt it? From Artur Davis to Chris Christie, the speakers did a fantastic job of avoiding the personal attacks (unlike you and the rest of your campaign posse) and highlighting the differences between the two candidates. The best part was Christie talking about failed leadership and what it means to lead from behind (like Obama famously does) and leading from the front and changing polls not reacting to them. The biggest thing for me especially watching MSNBC try desperately to be relevant, was the fact that when you look across the country and you see the GOP governors using the GOP formula for economic success and watching it actually work and have an impact in the face of this dire economic mess and as Nicky Haley said the federal government screwing it all up. Jen, how are the states like California and our state in Illinois doing with the failed Obama economic policies? Jen, how are Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, NC, NJ, SC and Florida doing in contrast?

I assume Jen that the popcorn didnt go down smoothly.

TexasT, it is a close race because despite the republican party spending a billion dollars on negative adds, and a whole media network trying to blame all our woes on one man everyday for the last three and a half years, it has not worked as well as they wished. One reason it has not worked is the average person understands how business works better than republican politicians give them credit for. They also understand the policies, positions and the party the previous president belonged to under which this nations economy was kicked to the curb. Another big reason it has not worked is because republicans in Congress did nothing to fulfill their promise of jobs, jobs , jobs. They blocked all attempts at infrastructure projects and stimulus packages, by either tying them to social issues or more tax cuts. So they are seen by many as having a great deal of responsibility for the current situation. Republicans were so worried about letting Obama have any success they deprived themselves of a record of any success in the process. They knew this would make the economy sputter that was exactly their intent, now they seem amazed that the president isn't being held solely responsible. When the private sector is depressed the government is the only thing that can spur the economy by ordering goods and services, and there is plenty of infrastructure that is in need of replacement or repair. Those jobs would have gave many people the disposable income needed to further spur the private sector, but the republican governors went on a mission to even further reduce the wages and benefits for public employees, which only puts more hurt on the private sector. Tax cuts do not create jobs, nobody hires because their taxes are lower, they only hire if they have customers to service and sell to. If you own a small business and nobody walks in the door and spends a dollar then the taxes on the dollar you did not make becomes the first thing on your list of last things to worry about. Lots of people with a few extra dollars to spend spurs hiring, the republicans are all about shifting more costs to the middle class, to enable giving people who already have tons of money a tax cut, that does not spur hiring, it will create more unemployment as people find their income consumed by the bare necessities, and have no extra money to spend with the small businessmen in their community. No businessman hires on the basis of his taxes being cut, or this silly notion of confidence in the president, if they have more customers than their current workforce can service they hire, if they have more employees than required to service their current level of sales they lay off, it has nothing to do with taxes or confidence. As republicans push to lower peoples wages and benefits, as they push to reduce the tax burden on corporations and the wealthy and shift those expenses to the general population you can expect unemployment to rise, because people just won't have the disposable income to create, support, or sustain any expansion of demand, and with no expansion of demand there will be no expansion of hiring.

Yeah. They treat black people as Americans who shouldn't be allowed to vote, so they get rid of early voting days when blacks traditionally vote in large numbers in Florida and Ohio. Hey Teapug trolls, it's the gop's brand of conservatism that is an epic failure.

Only the most feeble and hateful minds refuse to understand this and will vote against their interests hook line and sinker. They think that the Kock brothers, Sheldon Adelson, Fox News, insurance companies, banks, oil companies and drug companies that are financing the gop propoganda have their best interests at heart.

Here's a party that throws a wrench in the spokes of the economy, then says "nobama, barry or hussein" needs to by physically thrown out of office for not being able to fix it...because he is "not like us, doesn't understand America, is influenced by Europe, is a socialist, hates America", etc....Even more ironic is that 8 years of gop policy is what brought the global economy to its knees.

As I said before, Clint Eastwood should have approved alternate themes for each night of the convention:

Day 1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Day 2: Fist Full of Dollars

Day 3: For a Few Dollars More!

Dam there is not enough Lib's in here today. So I will step into it.

First to TexasT It was you little Bush and Cheney that put us into this mess to start with. As always the Rep's get us into a mess and the Dem's have to clean up your mess. The Problem here is the Rep's dug the hole so deep it is gonna take us 10 years to get out of the hole. Then there is this thing call Congress that don't want us to get out of the hole. Got got so drunk on having power after being out of power for 40 years that they will do anything to get it back. They are going to make the people suffer for electing President Obama. Less face facts. When ever the Americans elect a president that puts the American people first and wants to do things that American's life's better the Rep's do every thing to stop that President. They did it to JFK, Carter, Clinton, And now Obama, with one little twist, He is half Black. Old Man Koch must be rolling over in his grave, "you let a black man in my white house, and he is not a servant" These people with money think they own the President. Well Obama was elected by the people and he is our president, The rich can't buy him because he is our president, The peoples President. If the people weren't so stupid and put the Congress in the Rep's hands, this rescission would have in our review mirror by now. But the Rep's didn't want that. All they care about is getting the White house back so they can turn this country back over to the Rich. You just have to look at that lap dog Scott Walker. His nose is so deep up Koch brothers back side that all he can see is there butt cheeks. Is that what we want or need in this country. Same with the Governor in Ohio. At least Snider in MI thinks for him self a little. This is not leadership. Its as far from leadership as you can get. These guys are puppets to the Koch's and others like them. I guess there isn't enough money to satisfy people like that.

Nice try...

I don't have to prove who it was, it has been confirmed IT HAPPENED!

I'll let the readers decide, what they think of a party who publicly humiliates someone who doesn't have the same skin color!

So, anyone else want to continue to endorse this kind of cowardly behavior like WCA has?

Here's a story that CNN doesn't want you to know: Two GOP delegates in Tampa tossed peanuts at an African American camera operator working for CNN and yelled "this is how we feed animals." CNN, of course, is downplaying the story. Before they report something like this, Democrats would have to do something they could portray as equally despicable so they can pretend their craven appeasement of right wing extremism is really "impartiality."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/post/gop-convention-nuts-story-rnc-and-cnn-issue-terse-statements/2012/08/29/7524fef0-f1d8-11e1-892d-bc92fee603a7_blog.html?wprss=rss_opinions&tid=pp_widget

Sometimes the simmering racial resentment the Republicans are stoking in order to get Romney into the White House boils over at inopportune times.

Akeem, New Jersey

Caesar Augustus-

hey Fisty whilst you troll the net looking for loose forms of racism, what is there to defend. the two shltheads were removed. the situation was handled. Now Chicago Rahm is begging for help and you won't talk about that. As a black person shoots another screaming "Geeya N*gga". That's acceptable?

Throwing nuts at a black man and call him an animal is a loose form of racism? You are kidding right. Also not sure where Feisty has ever shown that she finds gun violence or murder "acceptable". You have turned an opinion you created about someone else in to some weak form of an attack and expect a response. Sounds like many of the attacks against our current president.

hey Akeem i think WCA addressed that with Feisty and intent. Nice try Akeem, finding racism in everything is a weak form of an attack and a lack having any courage. You support racism as long as your side does. I see it daily from the Lefty posters like Fisty, Bev and others. But Akeem since you think poor Obama is picked on, then defend his failures. Show me what he has done to better America. Lets start with 8.3% unemployment. and Begin

I do not look at things statically. Where did that 8.3% unemployment come from what cause it?- A recession correct? When did that recession occur?- 4 years ago. From a year to year standing has that number been trending up or down?- down. Explain how that leads to "failure" I won't say its stellar, but just because you use the words failure does not make it true. You can keep asking questions and I will keep answering them

I could care less for Feisty's intentions or why she looked for the article. She found the article posted it and you related it to a "loose for of racism" when it was a blatant one. Finger pointing at her for your action does not excuse it.

We are more than happy to discuss (and, often do) the harsh realities of how republican policies sent our economy onto life support and then you, when booted, set about doing all possible to insure that our economy does not recover. It is tough to rescue a drowning man with a death wish. But, it can be done and President Obama will do it.

It took FDR nearly 8 years to undo the damage done by his republican predecessor. Actually, President Obama has made more progress in less time. Furthermore, the U.S. economy (under President Obama's leadership) has recovered better than all the western democracies. That is particularly true when compared to those countries that have followed recovery policies similar to those espoused by your republican party.

BTW----Your username betrays your (and many republicans') disdain for democracy. You much prefer an oligarchy. Mitt Romney is a fitting leader for a party of oligarchs.

The speeches last night were exactly what I expected. The GOP thought Anne could pull in women and it really didn't work. Christie was just angry and that didn't work.

What surprised me the most was that there was NO energy in the convention arena. Usually there is almost an ongoing current through the crowd at the convention - both conventions. This group lacked energy. It was like they just showed up. But, even then, fewer people were there than I have EVER seen for a convention.

Yes, there was the off and on applause but nothing exciting like every other convention I've seen has had. The crowd seemed to be comfortable but not energized.

And, when you looked at the crowd it lacked young people. Oh, there were some - most notably the Romney boys and their wives. But, overall, it was an older, sedate group. I think that is why it lacked the energy that young, excited voters and supporters bring to a group.

It say a lot about the Republican party. It shows they have moved away from fresh thinking and they can't hold the young people's votes. The party - unless they make serious changes - is doomed. It really showed last night.

How did I avoid Obama's "failure" by answering your question? How did the recession start? there are about 20 different asnwers all which could be correct and all center around greed. When those answers are compiled all hands are dirty, but in my opinions the Republicans are dirtier than the Democrats... Were you just simply trying to bait me blame Bush, because yes as President he does harbor blame as well.

To use your logic the Democratic Congress of 2006 - 2008 must be completely blameless for the recession and the totality of the blame must fall on the Bush Administration?

Now perhaps you will hold the Obama Administration responsible for the current economic conditions and in no way blame the actions of the current congress.

I liked to flip the channels while watching the convention last night. It was interesting to see how different networks used the moment. Curiously enough MSNBC had Chris Mathews and Rachael Maddow (and others) talking while all of the Republican minority speakers were on stage.

This! I find it incredibly racist of MSNBC to exclude minority speaches on television. I also find it incredibly racist that people in these forums only see people for their skin color. Being non-white and non-male doesn't give someone a free pass to be an idiot on television.

But we have Obama with Grandiose promises, debt reducing, Hope and Change (more of the same) and a slough of other let downs but you won't put any blame where it currently lies. If you were watching the Republican Convention last night, after Ann and Governor Crispy Creme finished their speeches, President Obama was up by +10 (51 to 41, Obama). Before the Republican Convention Obama and Robme were tied.

So far, this (2012 republican) convention is the most boring in recent memory. It's all pomp and ceremony. Nobody with a dissenting point of view is allowed to speak. Even Ron Pauls' delegate counts were (insultingly) not repeated at the podium.

The most interesting part of it is who chose not to be there and who was locked out.

If there was a fact there Alan, I didn't see it.

no we didnt discuss this but tell me, how would you insert wealth into the middle class?

I'd start by making sure they paid less of an effective tax rate than those at the top, for starters. Next, I would create something similar to the stimulus; a program in which we rebuild the failing infrastructure of this country. This creates jobs (albeit temporary) that in turn gives the employees (many whom were unemployed) money to spend. When they have money to spend, they spend it. This increases consumption. With increased consumption, comes demand. With increased demand, private corporations create jobs to meet the demand. This in turn creates more permanent positions that can be filled after those aforementioned 'temporary' jobs are over.

Chris Christie wants to run in 2016 and many mainstream Republicans also want him to run. No matter how he read the words in the prepared speech, the underlying subconscious message was more about how great a candidate Christie will be instead of about Romney. How else could it be? If Romney wins it would move Christie considering a run out to 2020.

I also don't think the mainstream GOP likes the Ryan choice as VP because it brings in the Tea Party and far right on his coattails and they've already done severe harm to the GOP brand as it is. The only long term survivability for the GOP is to marginalize the far right and become more inclusive to moderates and minorities.

It's in the long term best interests of the GOP to let Romney lose this one, blame it on the far right, and spend all their energies to start building for 2016. Scuttling their nominee would definitely have to be subtle, though, so they won't do it nationally. They'll only have to make sure Romney doesn't win enough of the required swing states. So, nationally Romney could be up or neck and neck, but we all know it's the electoral vote that counts and not the popular vote. Romney winning the popular vote and still losing also provides the necessary solace to the GOP voters who will certainly not be happy, but it will not sting quite as badly.

MSNBC wants you to think the Republican Party hates minorities. So much so that the liberal news network cut minority speeches from it’s convention coverage.

When popular Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz, the GOP nominee for Senate, took the stage, MSNBC cut away from the Republican National Convention and the Hispanic Republican from Texas’ speech.

MSNBC stayed on commercial through former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis’ speech, as well. Davis, who recently became a Republican, is black.

Then, when Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuno’s wife Luce’ Vela Fortuño took the stage minutes later, MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews opted to talk over the First Lady’s speech.

And Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval? Noticeably missing from MSNBC, too.

Mia Love, a black candidate for Congress in Utah, was also ignored by MSNBC.

MSNBC doesn't have the evidence to back up their claims that the GOP is racist, so what do they do? They manufacture it based on lies and false coverage.

Next, I would create something similar to the stimulus; a program in which we rebuild the failing infrastructure of this country

LOL. American Reinvestment and Recovery Act = FAIL

Bush failed with infrastructure, so did Obama.

    Next, I would create something similar to the stimulus;

how many of these do we need, where is the money coming from?

With increased demand, private corporations create jobs to meet the demand. This in turn creates more permanent positions that can be filled after those aforementioned 'temporary' jobs are over.

so how is this going to happen? US currently lacks industry compared to china and the globe, we dont have business friendly environment for the small business, high coroporate taxes and the list goes on.

sure supply and demand but your solution really sounds very general and eerily similar to every politians view when addressing the public.

It amazes me how someone can say something like that and people think its ok. How would you feel if she said, referring to Democrats "they're still the party of dark male"?

What is that supposed to mean? Is being a "pale male" a bad thing? Surely you are not being a racist are you (regardless of your own race/color)? You wouldn't like or dislike a candidate based on his color/race would you?

The only thing that should matter when you vote for a candidate is decency, and if you think he/she would be a good President, not whether or not he is "pale".

Romney and Ryan? A pair of rats peddling their versions of better trap bait.

Mr Ryan: Tell me the difference between a legitimate rape and an illegitimate rape. Too, please explain to me why insurance carriers will be so eager to sell affordable health insurance to old people who are nearing the end of their lives.

Mr Romney: What gives you the right to determine my tax rates when you refuse to show me what you pay? Why should I believe you can create jobs when your primary business has been to destroy them? Why do you say "bailouts" are wrong when you finagled a good share of the bailout money? Why did you take the computer hard drives, and all tracks of your term as Governor of Massachusetts and hide or destroy them? After all this why would I not believe you are a liar and a thief? Fact, candidate Romney; I accuse you of being nothing more than a liar and a thief.

I'm rather surprised that the usual liberal presence on here is showing so much fear about a pending Romney victory. I think you can calm down. I can only imagine that Obama will rise to the challenge of the same sort of rhetoric that ya'll are throwing around here. He's gonna stay with the same old talking points, generally one issue from each special interest group that will actually cast a ballot for him.

I think that the speeches from last night from Governor Christi and Ann Romney were spot on with what each wished to express. Ann, with grace and dignity, outlined their life together and the focus and dedication that Mitt has placed into every job he has had and every obligation in his life. She accomplished what she wished to in what was an intelligent, eloquent speech to the Women of this country. Bravo Ann. Governor Christi, in my opinion, hammered on the greatest issue that this country is facing....the economy. He illustrated, through his own experience as a Republican with a Majority Democrat constituency that there can be a common goal and that it doesn't have to be painful to cut taxes and have a prosperous society. Does anyone from New Jersey wish to discuss Christy's policy and their state? I though his speech was very powerful with regard to the direction the Republican party needs to take to get back to a better standard of living for all people through hard work and a desire to succeed. I don't know why so many are opposed to working for a better life. So maybe those of you who are expressing fear about the prospect of national solvency could explain your concerns in an open and intelligent manner. It's about the economy. Social change means nothing if our Democracy fails to prosper.

Interestingly the same folks who are appalled at racial descrimination or about discrimination toward gay people have no problem making derogatory comments about people who have a weight problem. Heavy folks aren't that way just because they are lazy or pigs, some are of course, but many are heavy due to medication they take for other things, they could be heavy through inheretance of genes that originally meant survival in times of famine or they could be heavy due to a medical condition that causes them to be that way. Descrimination is descrimination and any comments or actions toward another person for things that are not important is descrimination and it doesn't have to just be about race or sexual orientation.

I don't know why Gov. Christy is the way he is and it is none of our business. It is what he says and how he says it that is important not how he looks.

    @ Bill, Fairfax VA,

    Post 1.5

You make it sound like people should be happy to work for others. Teachers shouldn't worry about retiring or for that matter you shouldn't be signing contracts with school districts to invest in your future. Just go to work everyday and work for someone else. Romney on the other hand can create companies that make millions of dollars by using the money you have invested in your retirement and when he is done he stops repaying the money he borrowed from you, sells it to a bogus company that then files bankruptcy the next day. Why should we reward someone of that nature by making him President? He could care less whether you retire or not he only cares about his family. I don't have a problem voting for a Republican but this man is not even a good Republican. The companies he claims to be so good, such as Staples and Sports Authority are nothing more than a Chinese product outlet. Tell me one product he sells that he produces in the United States? This guy has been out of my radar as a candidate from the very first day or not long after when he failed to mention his total assets to the Election Board. He claims he forgot because it was such a small amount. What else has he forgot to mention? I hate that the Republican Party couldn't do better! I hate what Obama is doing to this country but what he is doing is not worth the risk of what Romney could do to it. Romney's idea "for a country to prosper some have to suffer" is just not what I want for anyone in the United States. Maybe in 4 years someone worthy of being President on the Republican side might step up. I can only hope this country doesn't become Northern Mexico before then.

I guess by the good old days in the 1950's you mean the good old days of Senator McCarthy and school segregation. But you have to remember, the economy was booming in the 1950's because we were the only industrial economy still existing in the world after WWII, and everyone else had to buy American products. I feel like we've got no one worth voting for this time. Romney's too pro "Out-Sourcing" / "Free Market" and Obama's to pro union. Can't win. We really need a viable 3rd party, who will actually represent the American citizens who are electing them. I consider myself an independent voter, but going back to the Reagan days and with the only exception having been Perot, I’ve always voted Republican. We need whoever wins the next election to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. They should've given us somebody who would stand up for the American people.

Over the years both parties have sold out the bulk of the American citizens, who they're supposed to represent, by allowing the "out-sourcing" floodgates to open wider and wider without taking any sensible measures to stem the tide.

Neither party is willing to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. We really need somebody who will stand up for the American people.

These so-called “free trade agreements” have to go. It was obvious when they were passing these agreements as to what was going to happen and sure enough it did. Our leaders had to have known this as well when they were passing these bills. It’s just common sense.

The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules.

We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we'll still have jobs and a future for our children.

The bottom line is that “Our Government” has to protect American industry and the jobs that those industries provide. If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.

We need to add tariffs that are proportionate to the inequities in wages and regulations in the country where the goods were produced and or where we’re importing them from. We could then use the money raised by these tariffs to help companies build state of the art manufacturing plants here in the USA, which would create more jobs here at home for US citizens, which would then in turn increase our income tax revenue.

Bringing manufacturing back to the US not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. This should also include the safe harvesting, production and distribution of our own natural energy here in the USA, rather than paying for fuel from countries where they hate us. Let’s keep that money and those jobs here in the US.

We need to bring manufacturing back to the United States of America and both parties are ignoring tariffs as a way to level the playing field, raise money and bring jobs back home. Let's guess why. Oh that's right, tariff is a dirty word. Hum, maybe it’s that our so called leaders (political leaders) are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

I guess we should keep letting Corp Boards, Wall Street, CEOs and Foreign Lobbyists promote sending US jobs to countries where they work for slave wages, no benefits, no OSHA safety standards or no real environment regulations. How's that been working for us?

The so called “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field. Companies may have made higher profits by "out sourcing", but they've been putting middle class Americans who are a good part of the world’s customer base out of work. I’m not a lefty or member of any union. I run a business that employs over 20 people and produces products that are purchased by customers that do manufacturing and packaging. I’m just an average Joe, but I've been saying this for more than 10 years now. If I can see it, so can our so called leaders (political leaders) who are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

This didn't happen overnight. It's been happening over the past 15-20 years, but the economy was kept going by middle class Americans tapping into the equity on their homes until they were completely tapped out.

Check out Perot back in 1992 "Jobs getting sucked out of the country” – Many people saw it back then, but unfortunately too many people bought into the spin of “BS” that we were being sold.

YouTube - Giant Sucking Sound - Ross Perot 1992 Presidential Debate.flv

And this something that most of us already know at that time, because it was just common sense!

Xabre, why do you keep saying that one of the things you would do is to make sure the poor and middle class pay an effective tax rate below the rich when there is zero factual data to support your view that they dont already? From an income tax perspective the poor pay zero and the middle class at best pays on average a 7% plus state effective tax rate. The wealthy pay anywhere from 18-24% depending on how you define wealthy. So that seems very progressive to me almost 3-4 times the middle class? Payroll taxes are your contribution to your future retirement benefits so they dont count because you get those back. Whether the rich should pay a higher fair share whatever that means is a different question but lets not act like the poor and middle class pay a higher tax rate than the rich.

Second, you think tax incentives and tariffs will bring jobs back home? What economics class did you get an F in? Explain to me how paying higher wages in the US for benefits and then making sure that you impose a tariff on foreign goods that come into the US in order to equalize the competitive disadvantage of the US made product will help GM sell that same car, Coca Cola sell their products or Apple to sell their products in a foreign country? You do realize that global US corporations do sell their products in foreign countries right? So when you execute your plan and all of a sudden, GM's cars are 30% more expensive and you try and sell that car in Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and its competing with Toyota who wins? I love how all you econ experts think that all it takes is we increase the wages here for the middle class and impose tariffs on Chinese products and Poof the middle class is back. Not always but in most cases when jobs are outsourced offshore, its to make that company more competitive and increase revenue in order to save or create more US jobs.

Whats the point of these things? Honestly - democrat or republican - people have already made up their minds, and its not like the insightful, well thought out statements posted here (sarcasm) are swaying any opinions.

Personally - im voting for Romney. Not because i like Romney, i dont. But I know what i will get with Obama again, and i dont want that. So as ive done in the past, ill take the evil i dont know and hope for the best. Personally - i wish there were more options - but there isnt. Ive basically voted for the "other guy" since i could vote - except for Clinton - who was the only one i voted for as an incumbant.

Sidenote - I see a lot of left leaning people here frothing at the mouth as they call the other side full of hate. You have to appreciate the extreme hypocrisy of the left referring to hate and anger in the RNC speeches. This is the group of people who absent any facts call Romney a felon, and imply he killed the wife of a steelworker and pit one American against the other daily. The bonus irony here is that the leftist extremist president is now attacking Ryan as being "extreme". The humor value of this is priceless. Democratic strategy is clear. When you can't run on your record, you distort, divert attention, and engage in character assasination while throwing some bones to shore up your base illegels and welfare recipients. Truly pathetic and won't work come November even with NBC acting as a surrogate for Pravda.

    Colorado-Man,

"Sheesh! I finally agree with Feisty on something and get collapsed? What is up with that?"

Most of the right wingers don't like Feisty because she is an outspoken, liberal Democrat, so they always collapse her posts, and, as much as possible, those of anyone who agrees with her. You just happened to agree with her once, and the result speaks for itself.

Personally - im voting for Romney. Not because i like Romney, i dont. But I know what i will get with Obama again, and i dont want that. So as ive done in the past, ill take the evil i dont know and hope for the best.

You do know the evil. We had 8 years of it under Bush. You have seen the result, which is what Obama is being called a Communist for - for trying to dig us out of that.

As always, you are misquoting. He wasn't called a felon. He was called "either a felon, or someone who owes an explanation to the American people." Do you understand the more complex construction?

Similarly, for Romney, he didn't take a knife and stab her to death, but his carelessness contributed to her death. Is that a lie? If she had insurance and her cancer had been caught early, do you suppose she might be alive today?

This is your idea of "hypocrisy?" Pointing out the possibilities and the truth?

" The right does not have a monopoly on hate, racism and bigotry, but they are trying hard to achieve one. They just haven't quite got there yet."

Hey, whatever helps you sleep at night. The right and the left are both bigoted, hateful and racist. The right just says the hate and rolls with it - the left says the hate, but somehow just tries to paint it as they arent. Who is the first side to perceive racism in ANY statement political or otherwise? the left - because they WANT to see racism everywhere in every statement, they are activly looking for it. Normal people will read a statement and think nothing of it, where a lefty is screaming foul. Who needs to break Americans down into segregated categories no longer viewing them as Americans, but viewing them as Black Americans, or Asian Americans, or Gay Americans? The left. Does it matter? Does it matter that you are a Gay American vs a Straight American - do you really need to differenciate? Of course not, but many will say they need to do that to treat people equally. I call BS - if you want equality - simply treat everyone equal, stop all the non-sense adjective Americans - your an American or you arent - pure and simple.

The Right tend to stand behind religion and morals as the reason for their ways, the left - i got no idea what their issue is. But my observations from the middle boil it down to the Right feel they are right based on morals and religion - and you are hateful/bigotted/racist for attacking them on it. The Left feel they are right on humanitarian reasons and anyone that disagrees with them are hateful, bigotted racists.

I look at both sides as nutbag fringes. They both feel that they need to protect everyone else from the evils that they are too stupid to protect themselves from. The only difference is what each side deems evil. Those of us who are in the middle of the road are left shaking our heads at the idiocy of both. Then each election, as the politicians move further and further into the land of loony and become more partisan - the majority of Americans in the middle are just left grabbing their ankles as nothing gets done while each side blames the other for being obstructionists who are unreasonable and unwilling to compromise... at best. At worst - read the forums right here and bear witness to the blind hate as neither side sees aaaany fault with their sides views.

Am I the only person in America who has a brother who is a Republican and a racist and a Rush Limbaugh devotee and a Fox News viewer? I think not.

Rush Limbaugh and Fox News are constantly feeding red meat to the racist wing of the Republican Party. My brother was not able to go to college because he chose the Vo-tech path. He is a mechanic and heavy drinker. He is angry at former employers, former co-workers, Clinton and Obama. He calls his neighbors white trash although he isn't one. He says many of his friends agree with him. His last Democratic friend is no longer a friend because he dared to complain about a fireworks injury that cost him $500 to treat. My brother launched this firework from his bare hand which is his habit. And he dismissed this friendship of 30 + years with a "damn Democrat".

He told me that I was crazy for voting for that damn N.....r. I voted for Obama in 2008. You get the picture. I try to avoid him as much as possible.

I believe there are a bunch of these angry, racist white men out there fueled in their hatred by the words of Rush Limbaugh and the distorted news from Fox and innuendo from almost all the Republican candidates for the nomination. Only recently when another brother of mine (also a Republican) did his tax returns for him (for his entire adult life) and my racist brother began bitching about those damn Liberals, my brother pointed out to him how much lower his taxes were because of the earned income tax credit (a Liberal supported plan passed as part of Clinton's 93 tax reform bill) and that he had been getting this substantial break for almost 20 years.

You'd think my racist brother would have been thankful and maybe moderated his hatred for liberals. No way, these people are a lost cause, and that is why Romney has been talking about Welfare Reform, to incite the racist hater wing of the Republican Party to go and vote for him, even though they prefer some one else. My racist brother likes Santorum. Doesn't like Romney much though.

"The Left is just as guilty, it would seem you just dont want to see that from your view."

No, I don't disagree with you on that. There is plenty of hatred to go around. Hatred is one commodity we never seem to have a shortage of. The only thing I am saying is that you may be misinterpreting many of the posts on this blog as being expressions of hatred when they are not really. I agree that some of them might be truly hateful, but I don't think the majority are. Most of them I think are just vehement differences of opinion. Don't forget, BoBo, that this is a national election year. We are just a couple of months away from the election, and, as in any national election year, partisan feelings are running high right now, and people are just expressing their feelings and opinions about political matters. It doesn't mean they hate anyone even if sometimes it might sound like it. You see that the Republican comments on here are just as strident as the Democrat comments. That's why we have an old saying, "There are two things you should never argue about: politics and religion." But people do argue about those things all the times, and the arguments can become quite heated at times. But it's not the same as hatred. I think it's just what you would expect in a national election year.

I don't disagree with you entirely. I didn't say there were no hate posts on here, only that I don't think most of them are. But it isn't just a matter of politics, either. Just look at any blog on Newsvine. People are constantly calling each other "idiots", "morons", and even much worse. Newsvine has a Code of Honor that says you are not supposed to insult another poster, but hardly anyone pays any attention to it. Although you can be suspended or even banned from Newsvine for violating the Code of Honor, most of those who do it do not get suspended. That happens only when someone reports them, but the majority go happily on their way calling each other the worst of names. I guess anonymity just brings out the worst in people. They figure they can just say anything they want because no one knows who they really are.

What did I learn from last night’s convention speeches? Not much. But my takeaway is, republicans want to go backwards. They yearn for the days of mid 20th century, from the 50’s when the population was mainly white and women were in the home raising the family and not part of the workforce. Ann Romney, tried very hard to tell us she knows women….no she doesn’t. I learned she is every bit as inauthentic as her husband.. To many of the women of this country, she has no idea what struggles are and as much as she wants the American voter to love her husband, there is no love there. The crowd in the convention center were the most sedate I’ve ever seen, Mitt does not light their fire. Oh sure they applauded but like Queen Ann they too are phony in their support.

There was no talk about the future, no vision for the country, unless you want to go backwards…….their chief slogan emblazoned around the hall, ‘We Want to Take Our Country Back’, is true, back to a time of little or no regulations for clean food, clean water, back to a time of unregulated workplaces, with no safety standards, low wages for long hard working hours, jobs that had no benefits, no vacations, no sick time, but huge profits and no taxes for the corporate owners. Their plan is to go back to a time of back alley abortions, of no medical assistance for sick children and the elderly, with most people scratching to make a living of any substance. They want to throw away all that has been accomplished all that has made this country a standard bearer for the rest of the world just so their beliefs are intact and pushed on the rest of us. Well, no thanks.

Since 2010 the republicans have done their level best to stop the democrats from marching all over this nation. But that doesn't count half as much as the democrats stopping legislation from proceeding. How many bills are lying all over Harry Reid's table? How many times have republicans been accused of stopping the forward motion of this country when it's all on Harry Reid's table? The house approved how many jobs bills only to have them tied up and declared dead when reaching the Senate?

Oh... but liberals all agree it's the republicans fault.

I hope the republicans filibusterer every socialist bill the Senate comes up with. It's the only way to stop the forward movement of the democrats to take this country down.

On another note, it's real interesting how all these polls come out showing the favorability of Romney is down... these polls that have a 6-15% democrat oversampling. I hope the liberals buy it all, lock, stock and barrel. I want them to believe the polls because on November 6th, they will have the biggest surprise waiting for them... since they are buying into all the spoon fed crap they can swallow.

I watch the speech by Santorum. At first i was like, you know compared to Akin and now Smith (who compared a pregnancy resulting from rape as the same as having a child out of wedlock) Santorum is not that bad. And then he started talking about how he wants everyone in America to follow his family principals (rolling my eyes)... I miss the clown show of the republican primary.

But one thing I did notice is that Santorum was actually a good speaker even though i disagree with everything he said. The crowd was hanging on his every word, that is until he mentioned the president gutting the work requirement in welfare. The crowd gave no cheers and no applause when he delivered the line of attack. Maybe its because the delegates there are too smart to go for something everyone and their mother has concluded that the line of attack is false. Maybe now we can put this charge by republicans to rest and we can talk about other things like... Oh yeah, SHOW US YOUR TAX RETURNS!!

How about the GOP Congress send bills to the Senate without all the backward extremist conservative ideology added to them??

How about Harry Reid does his job. Pass the bill to the appropriate committees, change the legislation they don't like, vote on the legislation and if it passes the Senate go into committee with the House and come up with a compromise bill that can then be voted on by both houses of congress.

            Thanks for the link.

but again you need to read the whole article:

"Both parties will use their conventions to excite their base voters with an eye toward turnout on Election Day, while they also attempt to broaden their appeal to independents and other swing groups. Currently, by 50% to 38%, more political independents view the Republican Party unfavorably than favorably, similar to the 49% vs. 37% unfavorable to favorable split among independents in 2008."

Isn't the whole rest of the campaign season is about appealing to the thin slice of independents who are still undecided?

LimpIdiot - Do you know how legislation gets passed through the two houses? Each house creates their own version. They change the bills according to the way they see it to work. Then when there are two versions of the bill, they come together to sort it all out... the two houses have to approve one bill before it goes to the president for signature. How can a bill possibly be passed when the Senate won't even look at it? How do YOU know the bills were loaded with all sorts of other stuff? Do you have someone reading them before they head over to the Senate? My gosh Limpidiot, you have to be so completely void of any knowledge of how this country works its legislation that you find the need to spew just about anything to spread misinformation.

Didnt he say he would cut the debt in half in his first term? So he hasnt done that yet you want to vote him in another 4?

Actually, according to BO's website and census data, if all of Obama's proposals of tax increases and spending cuts were enacted the deficit would be lowered by about $200B.

CA - this has been discussed numerous times but clearly your reading comprehension is in the toilet. Let's do it again.

President Obama had a filibuster proof majority for a short 7 months - during which time Ted Kennedy was ill so he didn't vote and there were numerous recesses, so actually more like 4 months. The President at that time, not knowing the Republicans in Congress had taken a vow to obstruct anything he wanted to do, tried to work with the GOP on issues - to no avail.

After that time, the GOP used the filibuster more than any time in history to keep things from being done.

NOW do you understand????? Probably not!

I have to say. When the Tea party first came into being, I kinda liked what i was hearing. It was straight, forward and to the point, and they didn't support Rep's' or Dem's. It sounded like they supported America. They seemed to have some integrity. Like a lot of us, they seemed to see that Unions had got out of control, They saw the need to regulate but not over regulate. I would have got behind this movement. Then Out of the blue comes Dick Army, with load of money from none other then the Koch Brothers and others like them. Good old Dick, Hi jacked the Tea party, it was a hostel take over. The founders didn't stand a chance against all that money. The Tea party was lost forever. What a shame. Maybe if this country could use a real Tea party. A party that puts America and Americans first for a change. A party that would make it illegible for Lobbies t to buy off the people we elected. Then maybe we could have a real America again. Maybe we could have a Representative Government again like it was intended to be. Right now all we have a the Rich being represented, Or large groups like unions or NRA, AARP. Everything but the people themselves, We the people have no one representing us anymore. Its all about money. Sure they want our votes, but what is in it for "WE THE PEOPLE"? The Tea party had a good idle but money got in the way. The Koch brothers got in the way again. They keep us fighting with each other and they do what ever they want, because no one is watching. Think about the Natives in America. They were always at war with one another, They never could get to gather for the greater good of there race. We Americans need to get to gather for the greater good of our country. And the Greater good for our country is we come together as a nation. Not as Rep's or Dem's. Not as African Americans, Asian, Korean, German, French, Dutch, Spanish or any others. Just Americans. If you want to be American, Then be Just American. Time to stop all the Crap, And stand together, and fix this great country we call home. Time to get off Oil, Go all in on renewal energy. Save our oil reserves for other things. That will stop the need for wars. We need to be spending that money rebuilding our country, not rebuilding other country. All that money going to rebuild Iraq and our country is falling apart. Bridges fulling down, Yet no money for that. We can't take care of our own people but plenty of money for aid to country's that hate us and use that money to kill us. Money for aid to Israel. They don't need our money. Funny thing is we don't help the people that really need the help. When it comes to really helping people we have tunnel vision. We think we can buy friendship. We never seem to learn. If we really want our country back, we have to stop fitting with each other and take the fight to where it needs to be fought. Fight to stop lobbing, Stop the buying off of the people we elect. Get to where we the people are represented again. Then and only then will this Country be Great again.

Ann Romney really did not say anything that I did not expect to hear from her, she basically gave the "good and dutiful wife" speech. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it just was not the masterpiece some are trying to make it. One of her goals was to connect with women voters. She didn't come close to reaching this particular female voter. At the end of the day, I really feel that the GOP ticket has zero respect for a woman's right to make their own decisions with regard to reproductive issues and there is just no way in hell women will vote for those who want to regress that issue. Christie was a little better with his speech but he was more than a little unfocused. I generally think of him as someone who has little respect for anyone questioning his decisions or authority. I definitely saw some of that in his speech. This is a person that does not seem to believe in effectively working with others who may not share his viewpoint(s). While I certainly do not agree with some of the things Obama has done, I will certainly cast my vote for him. For me, Romney/Ryan does nothing for me as a female voter, nor as someone who has healthcare concerns for myself and other immediate family members. I've heard nothing from Romney or Ryan or those speaking on their behalf, that makes me want to vote for them.

Great link Eric!! But facts are hard to read. Even when the fact checkers have materials to back up what they write, the truth does not matter. $hit, it doesnt even matter that the CBO shreds the republican talking points on their two budget proposals (Romney's and Ryan's) the republican voter's blind hatred of the president would not allow them to see the truth. Even when its supported and staring them in the face!

            3) Coordinated effort to oppose President Obama on EVERYTHING PERIOD. NO COMPROMISE PERIOD.

            4) Coordinated effort to call President Obama every dirty word in the book so the only word left would be N=IGER!

            5) Blame every unfunded dollar bush spent on President Obama (2 Wars, 2 Tax Cuts, Medicare Part D)

            6) Blame the Collapse of Wall Street and the Housing Market as well as BANK GREED on President Obama.

            7) Claim President Obama is not a leader - But he is currently the sitting President

            8) Claim he is from Africa just like the slaves they brought to the United States.

            9) Claim there is negative job growth although we have positive job growth.

            10) Claim the poor get to many handouts but Corporation and Oil hand out are better for job growth.

Bottom Line: LIE your way to power without telling us what you will do, while hiding your tax returns.

I don't think it can be repeated often enough. The Bush/Cheney years the GOP is totally ashamed of to the extent most that were in leadership positions were not even invited to the convention, was the worst thing that has happened to America in my lifetime exceeding eight decades.

There are no Conservatives. The last truly Conservative President was Eisenhower. Reagan was an actor playing a part that he did better than any movie he was in.

Get this straight: Without regulation on the de facto governing entities, the Banks, Big Parma, Military Industrial Complex, the Health Care providers, Big Oil that is not really an American entity, they are Internationalists, etc. this nation will go all the way to Totalitarianism.

We can pick on all the warts Obama and the Democrats have and they still will be in favor of Americans over international control of our future.

I heard so much Bull Sh*t at that convention than we are expected to believe. Let me ask any on this blog. What exactly do you see as the Right Wing plan that will be good for average Americans? More tax cuts for the un-needy? More military hardware that is left in the hands of our enemies that they will use it against us, but does put our wasted bucks in the pockets of the likes of Halliburton? How about a sham health care deal that will not save enough lives or bring comfort to the aged but again will put our treasure in the hands of greedy bastards? Does it seem reasonable that drugs we ship to Canada that are retailed at lower prices there but are illegal for us to buy except here where they stick it to us? Are you happy to pay fifty bucks for an aspirin at most hospitals? Is everyone OK with bankers gambling with our money and if they win or lose they make it big while we have to cover the losses? Who exactly do the stupid trade deals we make help? Not the general population of America.

Do I make my point? I'm not saying that Democrats are free of such things. What I am saying is they are the only party that gives us the ability to make the country better through voting by every citizen or are you satisfied with voter suppression, the only actual voter fraud as there is almost no voter impersonation detected anywhere?

My first vote for president went to a Republican that was a genuine Conservative patriot that actually cared about all of us, Dwight Eisenhower. What we have now is the Tea Party tail wagging the dog that passes for actual Republicanism .... but they are a gang of liars.

I voted for Reagan for his first term, then I learned what a hoax the "Voodoo Economics" the Trickle Down Theory was and have never voted for the Right Wing again.

I agree it may take a bit of holding one's nose to vote for the Democrats but they have the only path out of the coming Totalitarianism. I should remind us that it was the Blue Nose Democrats that screwed us when the party had the numerical advantage that kept the Obama administration from doing much of what was promised. We do need to nominate people other than those that are fake democrats.

When some say people like Romney are out of touch, I disagree. They know exactly what they are doing and they get away with it because they are definitely in touch with their greed.

I'm at the time in my life when I can see the light at the end of the tunnel moving towards me. If there is one failing that holds us back the most to do with human nature, it is the inability most have to see beyond their own lifetimes. If we do think of the future, then we can all be Founding Mothers and Fathers.

            Right on, all the way!

I don't belong to any party and try to vote the issues, but when the economic issues are clouded with rules, from on high, regarding Americans' personal choices in their own lives it becomes impossible to separate the two.

It is incomprehensible how so many, otherwise reasonable people, can ignore the truly invasive social policies touted by the GOP party and expect voters to allow oligarchic "leaders" to rerun failed economic ideals again. It does smack of hypocrisy when Republicans talk the talk about small government but push hardline social policies that will require real money to enforce. Is this their jobs program; hire new people to watch who you sleep with, how you worship and how many babies you have? What will happen when they cut all the "unnecessary" social programs after slashing government jobs? Will the sick and elderly be reabsorbed like Akin's "legitimately raped" fetuses or will we just let them die?

I have no love for some of what Obama has done but at least he cares about this country. Socialism is better than nazism if you ask me. Please keep your politics out of my life, my family, my health, my religion and my choices. Even if you do not like Obamacare, you are a fool if you think that Ryan's plan will work. Everyone will not use the money wisely and those that don't will still need health care. I would prefer that they paid their fair share.

So here's what I learned after sitting through three hours of the GOP convention last night:

              1. After 17 speeches repeated the exact same thing, I must conclude that our friend Spanky was right all along. I've only worked hard and paid taxes for 43 years - but because I never started my own business, I have no redeeming value to society.

              2. I also never married, raised five kids, or have any grandchildren - so according to Ann Romney, I REALLY have no redeeming value to society.

              3. I don't own a single solid red dress or suit. So I totally have no redeeming value WHATSOEVER to society.

Here's what I didn't learn after those same three hours:

              1. This party presumably has a nominee in the presidential race by now. Anybody know who it is? Once in a very long while, someone would mention this "Mitt Romney" guy in passing - is he the one? It took Chris Christie like 20 minutes before he could bring himself to say the words. What's up with that?

              2. All 17 speakers boasted of their records of starting with just two nickels, a gum wrapper and a paper clip in their pockets, yet still being able to overcome the "suffocating" and "paralyzing" rules and regulations of their elected government and persevering against all odds to create millions of jobs anyway - so why is there still such high unemployment?

              3. They all also boasted of balancing their budgets and completely wiping out massive deficits, all the while cutting taxes - in other words, they made more money by reducing their income, which seems almost magical. So why wouldn't any one of them boast about a single thing they did to accomplish that or how many jobs and services they had to eliminate along the way? Who were they so afraid of alienating?

              4. Getting back to unemployment, I notice the one guy who DIDN'T mention that was Chris Christie. Anybody know what the unemployment rate in New Jersey is? (Hint - it's significantly higher than the rest of the country).

              5. Why do people complain about being called "tea baggers" and then show up on national tv with a dozen tea bags stapled to their goofy hats?

Oh, wait.....I just remembered something else I learned last night - Ann Romney and I have something in common after all. As she told us at least three times, Mitt makes her laugh. Yeah, Ann.....me too.....

Ahhhh, quit your crying Joanne. We all know that, to you people, a woman isn't a real woman unless she's had an abortion or two. Ann Romney's speech was fine. You can see that she is family oriented (this obviously bothers many liberals), she loves America, and she loves her Mitt.

The only person being told he had "no value" last night was Artur Davis- it was implicit in NBC's not bothering to air his speech. Too bad those of you tuning to this network missed it- he gave an eloquent speech that was a path to health for those still caught in the web of the cult.

I'm supposing that NBC didn't air it because Davis is the former co-chair of Obama's 2008 campaign. Why?

Because I don't see every decision as racist, that's why.

JoAnne---it was kind of like watching an alternate universe, wasn't it? I just can't imagine how Ann Romney, who seems never to have had even a part-time job, expects working women juggling a job (with pay at 77% of what men make), kids, older parents and managing a home to relate to her. Red is a good color for her, though.

              Alternate universe?

When democrats spin the number of employed going DOWN 195,000 as "good news" because the number of jobs created was 163,000-that's an alternate universe.

When democrats spin GDP growth at 1.7% as great growth- that's an alternate universe.

When almost $6 trillion added to the debt in three years is better than $4 trillion added in eight- that's an alternate universe.

When the unemployment rate is artificially deflated by kicking millions out of the civilian labor force- which is down to 1981 levels- that's an alternate universe.

When pointing out facts is labeled racist- when economic statistics have nothing whatsoever to do with race- that's not just an alternate universe, that's bizarro land.

When those still left supporting Obama whine that the GOP did not talk about the ephemeral "hope"- that's delusional.

NBC should, really, have broadcast Davis' speech. You'd all have learned something- and might actually have some hope for your own, personal, recoveries.

I saw ALL of Artur Davis's speech - and I don't have cable. Of course, if the GOP continues down the road to cut funding for PBS, I'll probably miss the next one too. And you know as well as everyone else on here that it wasn't just NBC - none of the other networks carried anything before 10:00pm, which means they missed a whole slew of other speeches too. It's called "ratings", and they'll do the exact same thing to the Democrats next week.

@Blackcatwhitecat - Aww, now I'm blushing. I'll accept on one condition - can we honeymoon in Alaska and the Yukon? It's been way too long since my last trip..... :)

joe#'s, and another poll had President Obama leading by one. President Obama leads Romney in likability 61% to 27%; in addition, Obama has a huge lead regarding who will help ordinary working people more--6 in 10 (60%) believe Romney's policies will help the rich meaning 60% believe Obama's will help the other 99%. Believe it or not, those numbers are more revealing than any head-to-head poll because those issues are what voters consider when they actually vote.

"principled compromise"....... I didn't know that "principled" was a synonym for "NO".

So far the whole GOP affair has been disjointed. The division over Ron Paul's delegates, the mixed message from Ann Romney and Christie. Santorum hyping himself versus Romney.

I would say a resounding display of narcissism, and "it's all about me".

The lie-fest will continue today, more of the debunked Mediscare claim from Romney, and the out of context "I didn't build that" quote.

Do yourself a favor folks, take a moment and go to politifact.com and factcheck.org and look at the fact checks from last nights statements.

"You people" know everything you're ever going to know about Romney's plan. Ryan's Tea Party sends their orders to the oval office and Romney rubber stamps them. King Romney and Queen Ann then stand on the balcony to the roar of admiration from their loyal subjects without a clue of what they just approved. Everything will be just fine. Trust me.

As for Arthur Davis, who cares and who knows why he agreed to speak other than for his own political gain. Since 2004, the GOP has produced a democrat at their convention. The democrats could do the same thing but they don't feel the need to play that silly game of see, see, we got one from the other side to play Benedict Arnold and that proves ????.

It's a two-way street, Charlie Christ endorsed President Obama recently; in 2008, Colin Powell endorsed President Obama. No doubt there are other lesser known republicans who do not like the far right turn of their party.

Damage123: "Ahhhh, quit your crying Joanne. We all know that, to you people, a woman isn't a real woman unless she's had an abortion or two."

Stereotype much, Damage? As I said, I never had kids. I've never been pregnant, and now at age 60 and having had a hysterectomy in my 40's, I'm reasonably sure I never will. But if I had ever been, I am morally certain I would not have been able to have an abortion. I'd have totally sucked as a parent, too - but there are plenty of people out there who would be awesome at it who can't have kids of their own. So I'd have opted for having the baby and giving it up for adoption - possibly even in the case of rape or incest, though thankfully I never had to come even close to having to make that decision.

But the point is, if I had, it would have been MY decision - not yours. And certainly not the government's. You know.....big government = BAD, right? You know, in my 60 years on this earth, I have yet to meet a single person who is actually PRO abortion. But you go ahead and pretend there are if it makes you feel better......

              Psst, JoAnne,

not one of them bragged about how much stimulus money they took. Nor did they BRAG about how many government jobs they cut, teachers they cut nor other middle class victims of their arcane 'policies'.

oh, and I found it GLARINGLY telling that Christie mentioned Breyers Ice Cream; but never thanked Cory Booker or Mark Zuckerberg for THEIR part in helping him cut the Education Budget. yeah, you can buy a lot of ice cream with a 100 MILLION dollars.

also, too, do you think Ice Cream was the feel good moment? Cuz' I didn't see much hope or happiness,...just a LOT Of dope! Aren't they anti drug?

Jody, you may have spoken too soon,...just hearing that Charlie Crist HAS been asked to speak at the Dem Convention; but that's okay. I rather like hearing what he has to say about how he was driven from the Republican party. I can RELATE to that message.

JoAnne - I'm glad you were able to sit through all that BS without geting sick. Very sorry you did not learn very much, but you had to know ahead of time that nothing was going to be said about Mitten's plan for this country. He HAS NO PLANS! He is a rich guy who wants to buy the Oval office and pretend to be somebody important. I'm guessing it is because he is trying to over-compensate for being hung like a Ken Doll with less personality.

If we cannot have Ron Paul, I would vote for Obama because Michelle is the hottest first lady we have ever had and one who can relate to working women everywhere. Nothing against Anne Romney, she looks good for a cougar and probably needs a good munch from me just to know what an O feels like at least once in her life, but Michelle is smoking hot with a body to die for and brains to match.

Two things to keep in mind when voting:

              1. Is the man with his hand on the button getting any?

              2. And just how good is the tail that keeps him content?

PS sorry you never married, but most married women are sorry they gave up their single life.

@Damage123, although you were addressing Jo Ann, I just wanted to say that it seems it would be in the GOP's best interest to not bring up the subject of abortion or rape or both subjects together. If you haven't noticed, those topics have been kicking some GOP a$$es lately. And yet, they keep harping on the subject(s). This is but one more reason why Romney/Ryan goes the way of McCain/Palin. On another note, I missed Santorum's speech so I guess I can be thankful for small favors. I am originally from PA and well remember his antics. I'm surprised he ever became a presidential candidate. Not surprised he didn't become the GOP's nominee. I'm sure he'll try again in 2016, Christie will probably throw his hat in the ring then too. Another non-win presidential race for the GOP!

"Principled compromise" was offered by the Democrats in the Grand Bargain. The Republicans walked away from it. Further, the Republican candidates when asked about during the primary all said that they would refuse to compromise and accept the offer even if it was 10 dollars in spending cuts for every one dollar in increased revenue.

The Republicans had a chance to help reduce the deficit by 4 trillion and they walked away. That was neither "principled" nor "compromise."

I love how people take 1 poll and pawn it off as the deciding factor just because it happens to agree with what they want it to say.

Anyone who looks at polls and believes them has a lot to learn. Look at Wisconsin's recall election where it was neck and neck on election day and in the end Walker won very easily. The same will happen with the presidential election, the polls show it close and at the end of the day Obama will win in a landslide. The GOP knows this, expects this and wants this because they never wanted Mitt, and don't like him, they are currently using this election as a means to pave the way for one of their "rising stars" like Ryan or Walker to run in 2016.

I am sure that all our Republican friends are pleased with last night’s speeches although if you liked Santorum’s, you may need to question your sanity. We will see over the next few weeks if the bump given to Romney’s chances by Ann is sustainable as the “I am who I am” guy is to his detriment who he is. What, if one’s eyes were open, should give much pause to overly waving the GOP flag is the makeup of the Convention audience. It was glaringly White and aging and having resided in the US for several years, I know that this is demographically not the case. If Romney is to win, he will have to win the largest percentage of not only White voters in general but specifically White male voters in history since the arrival full voting emancipation, and True the Vote through poll watchers is one arm of this effort. The Black vote is virtually non-existent, the Hispanic vote is shrinking at a rapid pace, and the Female vote has become the Revenge of the Uterus. Inevitably there will be photos of the after Convention cleanup crew and they will be contrasted with photos of the Convention’s audience. I strongly suspect that the comparison of the two will not bode well for Republicans. Romney will take the high road and attempt as much as possible to focus purely on the economy, much of the rest of the GOP will take the low road and pander with well-known dog whistles to their base which is what it is and we all know what it is, and it will be shrill and divisive.

Maybe even by some liberal and tolerant people on this very site. After all the abuse they take from other blacks and liberal whites, you think they're gonna come out in the open?

BCWC--interesting observations. Seems to me that the GOP had the chance in 2008 to look into the future and see the demographic changes in our society and position themselves to win over younger people, Latinos and African-Americans. Instead, they chose the path of obstructionism of the economic recovery and voter suppression. I truly hope it doesn't work for them.

89% of republicans are white, only 11% are minorities. In a country where the demographics are shifting toward a minority majority, where will the GOP be in 10 years if they do not become more inclusive? Right now, conservatives bash minorities, bash blacks, bash Hispanics, bash gays, bash Muslims, bash the poor, bash women, bash anyone who does look like them or share, think like them or share their religious beliefs. The GOP has become the symbol of intolerance, hatred of others and anger that their country no longer looks like them. They want "to take our country back" exemplifies that inability to accept the change and an unwillingness to even try. That's a party in decline.

Don't forget Jody- Blacks don't like Hispanics. Hispanics don't like Blacks. Neither like homos. Muslims hate everybody whose not muslim (especially Jews). Liberals hate Catholics (which most Hispanics are). Liberals hate White males (who still make up a large part of the pop.) Good luck holding THAT "big tent" together. Hispanics will gradually move rightward as the hardworking ones start successful businesses and get sick of the lefties contempt for them. They are also family-oriented which doesn't go over big in the Dem party. The ones that came here to loaf and live off the government will join the Blacks and White trash who have been doing so for years, in the "Big Dem Tent."

              Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially debilitating disease in which your body's immune system eats away at the protective sheath that covers your nerves. This interferes with the communication between your brain and the rest of your body. Ultimately, this may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that's not reversible. Symptoms vary widely, depending on the amount of damage and which nerves are affected. People with severe cases of multiple sclerosis may lose the ability to walk or speak. Multiple sclerosis can be difficult to diagnose early in the course of the disease because symptoms often come and go — sometimes disappearing for months. There's no cure for multiple sclerosis. However treatments can help treat attacks, modify the course of the disease and treat symptoms. Signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary widely, depending on the location of affected nerve fibers. Multiple sclerosis signs and symptoms may include:

Numbness or weakness in one or more limbs, which typically occurs on one side of your body at a time or the bottom half of your body

Partial or complete loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time, often with pain during eye movement (optic neuritis)

Double vision or blurring of vision

Tingling or pain in parts of your body

Electric-shock sensations that occur with certain head movements

Tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait

              Fatigue

              Dizziness

Most people with multiple sclerosis, particularly in the beginning stages of the disease, experience relapses of symptoms, which are followed by periods of complete or partial remission. Signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis often are triggered or worsened by an increase in body temperature. These factors may increase your risk of developing multiple sclerosis:

Being between the ages of 20 and 40. Multiple sclerosis can occur at any age, but most commonly affects people between these ages.

Being female. Women are about twice as likely as men are to develop multiple sclerosis.

In some cases, people with multiple sclerosis may also develop:

              Muscle stiffness or spasms

Paralysis, most typically in the legs

Problems with bladder, bowel or sexual function

Mental changes, such as forgetfulness or difficulties concentrating

              Depression

              Epilepsy

There is no cure for multiple sclerosis. Treatment typically focuses on strategies to treat attacks, to modify the course of the disease and to treat symptoms. Some people have such mild symptoms that no treatment is necessary.

Ann Romney is familiar with all this because she has this disease. I’m familiar with all this because my beautiful bride of over thirty years has it too. Mr. Romney should also be very familiar with it if like me as the Prime caregiver he has to administer the treatment to his wife’s tookass 3 times a week and try monitor some of the other deleterious effects of this disease. I thought today would be a good opportunity to familiarize all of you with it.

It is the third most common killer (especially of Women) behind only Heart Disease and Cancer. M.S. patients generally are robbed of 5 to 10 years of their life. Nevertheless, two-thirds of the deaths in people with MS are directly related to the consequences of the disease. Suicide also has a higher prevalence than in the healthy population, while infections and complications are especially hazardous for the more disabled ones. Most patients lose the ability to walk prior to death. MS has a prevalence that ranges between 2 and 150 per 100,000 depending on the country or specific population.

Mrs. Romney so far doesn’t seem to manifest many of the debilitating effects of this disease at least not in public. I can only attribute this to her symptoms manifesting themselves in different more subtle ways, the fact that she has access to good insurance and the ability to afford the best care that money can buy. Mr. Romney must also do a pretty good job of keeping her stress level down as that is one of the contributing factors for remission. No matter if it is one of these factors or a combination of all of them and win or lose this Presidential Race we hope that you continue to enjoy good health and remission free days.

Meanwhile up on the Hill things haven’t gone quite so well. We joke a little bit about the cane that my Wife has to use now to steady herself. ‘Corse it would help if the Insurance Company hadn’t deemed the pills to help her gait as “experimental” so we’re out of pocket for them. What else are you going to do with something that keeps her somewhat mobile and out of a wheelchair for a few more years? The expense kinda cuts down on some things that we were hoping to enjoy in our retirement years now that the Hi-Tech Generation is grown and on his own but here again what else are you going to do.

I try to gloss over and ignore the little cognitive things that she used to do well and now only confuse her. They’re not that important and to bring ‘em up would only remind her of how much she’s lost and depress more than she already is especially on bad days. Here again the Insurance Company won’t allow anti-depressants even though it is one of the recognized symptoms of the disease. Just another one of life’s littlie pissoff’s don’t cha know.

On the whole it kinda looks like the Hill Folk and the Romney’s are in about the same place. Decent Insurance and a little money for out of pocket expenses will do that for you.

So Mrs. Romney while we’re all setting around patting ourselves on the back over doing and coping so well why don’t you and me get together and do something for our friends and neighbors that are maybe not doing so well. With my activism and your advocacy we could do a lot of good for a lot of people who aren’t quite as lucky as we are. I know Mr. Romney is pretty tied up campaigning right now so I would be more than happy to stand in for him. We could do a series of Walks for the Cure for instance. You do the talking and I’ll do the walking similar to what I do already for my wife.

While we’re at it why don’t we see if we can’t get Mr. Romney’s stances on some of these issues that have consequences for our less privileged neighbors? Research for instance. Twenty short years ago an M.S. diagnoses was basically a long painful death sentence. Now we have Pharmaceutical alternatives that while expensive and do not cure the disease at least extend sufferers life and the quality of that life. Stem Cell research seems to be especially promising in the area of not only M.S. but a myriad of neuro- muscular diseases such as Parkinson’s and Muscular Dystrophy. Your husband wants to reduce funding and outlaw Stem Cell research entirely.

Actually we need to work on your Husband’s attitude on this whole Health Care deal. See he wants to back up on it some and I don’t think that is such a good idea. I mean M.S. develops over such a long period of time and periods of remission make it perfect for Insurance Companies to go back to denying coverage for Pre-existing conditions for instance.

How can we expect Emergency rooms to administer the MRI and Spinal Taps necessary for diagnosing what at the time looks like something else? How about the bi-annual blood test for liver function necessitated by the Treatment Drugs? Or the annual MRI deemed necessary for monitoring and revising treatment? How about the Physical therapy to help retain as much function as possible? You and I are managing to afford this and several other things right now but many of our friends and neighbors can’t. Why make them make a choice between maybe eating and or watching your loved one deteriorate right in front of you.

So Mrs. Romney lets elevate our discussion of whether Stay at Home Mothers are better than Working Moms. Let’s move into the realm that is at once both and neither. You and Mr. Romney can use it to burnish your credentials he for President and you as his Principal Advisor on Women’s issues. I can support that if it raises the Awareness for Multiple Sclerosis and what it’s doing to our Wives, Mothers and Brothers one iota. Because trust me Mrs. Romney I would dance a jig with the Devil himself if it would spare just one women the future that you and my wife are staring straight in the eye.

              I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.

              Take a load off Annie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Annie, And you can put the load right on me.

Beautifully written and an important message IR. If Ann Romney had a soul, if her husband was capable of seeing anything but his own desire to buy the next bright shiny toy, the White House, they would support the ACA. As it is, Romney is posturing to the WORST in our society, the fringe right wing neanderthals that have taken over the Republican Party.

But I am sure that both Romneys sit in church of a Sunday, hypocrites both.

ALL OF YOU CONSIDERING VOTING FOR ROMNEY NEED TO STUDY WHAT IR HAS WRITTEN, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE AND YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND IT.

Hugs to you and your lovely bride, IR. Blessings to you both.

Why don't you look up what she's "done for MS sufferers", Feisty Dumb@!$%#? Or are you scared you'll find that she's donated millions of $$$, uncounted amounts of time etc...?

It's easy for simple-minded female dogs like you to sit here and spew about things you know nothing about, so why don't you take a couple minutes to check it out? C'mon. It's not like you're BUSY, right?

              *****Standing ovation*****

Uncle Redneck, having met your beautiful bride of 30 years in person, I can attest to her courage, her good humor and to the fact that she, like so many others, is actually fighting the battle that Ann Romney has barely skirmished with. I've never had to deal with MS, but I was once diagnosed with breast cancer - had my first surgery 15 years ago this week, in fact - just a couple years after my mother had hers. But I can still remember about six months later having someone learn about my issue and reverently tell me "Ohhh.....so you're a SURVIVOR".

Well.....I don't know.....maybe.....sort of.....I guess? I just never thought of it that way. I've survived so many worse things in my life that my brush with cancer was like a walk in the park. I didn't need a mastectomy. I didn't need to undergo chemotherapy. I missed maybe a week or so of work for my two lumpectomy and lymph node procedures. I was able to go to the six weeks of radiation on my lunch hour every day - and with my insurance at the time, I paid ONE small co-pay the day I got my tattoo and then never paid another dime for the next ten years of follow-up visits. I never had a single side effect from either the tamoxifen or the Femara I took. And 15 years later, about the only time I even think of breast cancer is when I go for my yearly mammogram.

So for me to compare my little skirmish and my extraordinary good fortune with that of someone like our friend Phinephancy - or anyone else who really HAS fought a courageous battle - would be totally ludicrous.

I wish neither MS nor cancer nor any other illness on anyone in the world. But to whom much is given, much is expected, right? If Ann Romney wants to talk about her MS and her cancer, that's great - but being honest about how blessed she has been to escape what so many others have to deal with every single day would be even greater.

Hugs to both you and your beautiful bride. Having MS doesn't make her a saint. Being married to you for 30 years, though.....well that's another story! Cheers to you for saying what you needed to say.

I don't believe it would be out of turn to ask Willard or Queen Ann, if Miss Elly, the love of your life, could have some of what the Queen of Hearts takes to give her sparkle and a bounce in her gait.....perhaps its the Botox, I hear it has some miracle properties and fixes things it wasn't originally intended to do. It sure is working for Annie.

If Mitt is elected and oversees the repeal of "ObamaCare" (which was based on "RomneyCare"), folks with pre-existing conditions like MS will have even more issues to deal with should they lose their insurance coverage. And how much treatment will be available to someone with a voucher to buy basic Medicare coverage, as Romney/Ryan want to change it to?

Thanks for sharing your story---***hugs to you & Miss Elly***

Da Noid: The Romneys have made Ann and MS central to their campaign. It is, therefore, fair game.

What is important about it is what Ann has learned about living with MS. Since it has not translated into activism for those with debilitating diseases who are not covered by insurance or have the means that she does to afford expensive experimental drugs, it is quite right to be critical of her.

I have a son with serious disabilities. It drove me to activism, and sympathy and empathy for those who struggle every day to go to work to maintain insurance coverage, as well as the struggle to educate disabled children.

Unfortunately, that lesson is lost on the Romneys.

I have MS, and Ann Romney will never suffer like I do, with things like $1350 co-pay with my companies previous insurance, trying to figure out how to afford the necessary MRI when my deductible is more than the MRI, or with how will I support myself when I can no longer work or if I will be able to even get insurance if they repeal ACA. She will never have to worry about losing her job because she is in so much pain she can't get out of bed or how to pay the bills.

Not everyone with MS can afford a "therapy horse" that doubles as an olympian. They wrote off $77,000, hell I don't even make that much in a year. I take no "handouts" from the government and I pay my taxes.

So yeah Ann Romney may have MS but she is not like most people that suffer with this horribly debilitating disease.

Hey IR, check with your insurance about taking an older antidepressant--I have found that insurance will not pay for the new stuff (like Lyrica) but the older stuff like amitriptyline they will. These antidepressants have an added bonus they help with nerve damage. Maybe if the doctor writes it for nerve damage instead of depression they will pay.

How about this for a mixed message. Your host Chris Matthews - who sees a racist behind ever bush, hosted a panel on MSNBC that cut away from every speech by a minority speaker. Why is that?

I noticed that myself, Jack. Tingle Leg, protector of all minorities, refused to show any minority speeches. WHY? Is he afraid it might not fit in with the agenda he pushes if viewers notice? But then, this IS NBC we're talking about. Chris Matthews, Death Of Neil Young, doctoring 911 tapes to inflame race hatred. It's not like NBC /MSNBC has any credibility left anyway. Hence their pathetic ratings.

Artur Davis was great. He displayed a wonderful balance of sharp intellect and common sense. He delivered his speech with wit and humor. He pointed out the vagueness of "Hope and Change" had now been replaced by the familiarity of Obama's failed leadership.

Davis has shown leadership before. Artur Davis was the only black man who voted against Obamacare because he knew in his heart the effects of a government takeover of 1/6 of our nation's economy would be a disaster. He did this as a Democrat.

jim, please explain how it is a government takeover? Did I miss something? Did President Obama nationalize the insurance companies?

A government takeover would be Medicare for All, which would be a much better plan. Taking profit out of healthcare is common sense. A person's life should not be determined by profit!!!

Andie, The health care industry makes up 1/6 of our country's economy. Obamacare creates something like 159 NEW federal agencies, bureaus, boards and commissions .... just to ADMINISTER the law ! At last count, the REGULATIONS being churned out (by persons unknown) was said to be about DOUBLE the length of the 2,700 page bill itself. Toss in a few czars and penalties for those who fail to buy health insurance and you have a defacto TAKEOVER.

Remember, Obamacare can limit rate increases by insurance companies, if they think it is too much, and run them out of business. We have already seen with Medicare what can happen when the government controls reimbursement rates ... doctors are now refusing to accept new medicare patients.

Obamacare will be a clu$terf_ck of government bureaucracy and red tape.

              • That is an example of true Republican HONESTY, for a CHANGE!

Unfortunately, there is no HOPE for people like that.

Heard on the radio this morning that Ron Paul got 22? (I think that's the number I heard) Iowa delegate votes to 6 for Romney. Don't know if the GOP gave the Paul tribute the boot or not but Iowa GOPers gave Paul a huge majority of delebate votes.

                Barack Obama:

Alias Barry Soetoro pawns himself as Barack Obama, the humanitarian, the POTUS, the campaign for hope and change. But we know better. Barry is a radical Marxist who was raised by Communist parents and Communist grandparents. His mentors were known Communists, his contacts in college were strictly Marxists supporters, Marxist professors and a group of Pakistani activists as stated in his book, "Dreams From My Father".

Barack Obama, tell us about Frank Marshall Davis or Bill Ayers. Surely you remember Mr. Davis. After all, your mother knew him all too well. Mr. Ayers, a known terrorist, responsible for at least a dozen bombings, helped your early Illinois campaign by raising money, thru his organization Underground Weather. Tell us about your trip to Pakistan ('81) with Pakistani Wahid Hamid.

Share with us your ideals of socialism, after all you're a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), referred as the "New Party". Please tell us why you have been influenced by the writings of Karl Marx, the prelude to Communism. Share with us your association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Do you justify this man's message by condemning our country by saying, "God bless America? No, God Damn America"? Was this a forethought supporting your belief in Marxism?

Are these the individuals who have inspired you to public office? Are these the individuals who have inspired you to plot against the United States? Are they the people for whom you've entrusted your Muslim faith?

Please tell us why you mocked the Holy Bible and Jesus' sermon on the mount, calling the sermon a radical message. You have mocked Christianity and this country. Barack Obama, you have betrayed this nation and all its' people. Your skin is dark because of your race, but your soul is darker because of your deception.

United States of America………………you didn't build it Barack Obama.

What better way to express it than to justify it by believing the lies fed to those who need an excuse to hate. In other words, what a shipload of fear and hate was expressed by TopDrum and Jim#'s; trouble is all those lies lumped together say more about them than they do about President Obama.

Dolts like yourself are not knowledgeable about tax matters so you would not understand them. Besides, his 2011 return is extended and unfinished ... of course, "morons" might expect it to be released BEFORE it is finished and filed !

Not only is Cardinal Dolan giving the closing prayer at the Democratic convention, but the Jumah Congregational prayer will be held outdoors - this Friday, before the convention even starts - and is just one of over a thousand other events happening in Charlotte that are neither sponsored by the Democratic National Committee nor any part of the convention schedule:

                      http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/dncprayer.asp

Oh, and hey - I love the original (false) claim about this made on the Snopes site - "I saw this on Facebook". Well, gosh, that means it MUST be true, right?

For those who think the stimulus didn't work, compare the DOW of March 6, 2009 to today.

                      March 6, 2009 ... 6626.94

                      Today it is over 13100

Nearly doubling the value of American 401Ks, pension accounts, American savings.

Republicans said the markets would punish American 401ks for passing the stimulus. Clearly Romney was wrong then and he's lying today.

Thoughts and prayers to those in the path of Isaac. Seeing some of the same areas destroyed by Katrina 7 years ago under water again has to be disheartening for the people along the Gulf.

As for the GOP convention, I used to watch both party conventions and enjoy them even when I disagreed. A week or so ago Mitt Romney accused President Obama of being angry which is simply another Mitt lie. That said, starting in 2004, I began seeing hate, anger as the primary component in GOP speeches. There's always been party bashing by both sides but it used to be done with humor. Ann Richard's lines about poor George, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth were pokes at the opposition but were not mean. The tone at the GOP convention changed in 2004, and it changed more dramatically in 2008. It became more about how much hateful stuff the GOP could sling and still be allowed on primetime TV. It is no longer a party presenting its ideas and vision but rather one that is hateful and angry so Mitt Romney points his finger at President Obama for being angry when it is clear that the anger and hate lies squarely in the GOP.

I was not home last night for the first half of the coverage. What I did see was a crowd who seemed to applaud and cheer more out of need to appear enthusiastic than actual enthusiasm. I also found the multiple screens directly behind the speaker distracting when Ann spoke; unless there was a close up, you couldn't see the speaker and you didn't focus on the speaker for the constant shifting of pictures going on behind.

Ann gave a nice fluffy speech about love, tried to appeal to women but she seemed as awkward as her husband is--she's not a professional speaker but the Romney's have been running for President since 2007, she should be better at it by now. It wasn't a great speech that moved the room despite the signs waving, the cheers and applause and it is doubtful her speech moved the at-home viewers. It was a nice speech, an okay speech. Christie's speech seemed more about promoting Christie and the GOP in 2016 than about Mitt Romney.

I remember all the criticism of the Democratic convention of 2008 and the setting for President Obama's speech but when it was their turn, the Republicans spent $2.5 million on a set with distracting images on it. And they want to be the stewards of the economy! The same economy they drove in a ditch once already.

I expected a better speech from Gov. Christie---expected to see more of his humor and intelligence. Didn't expect it to be all about him, as it was.

Steeler Fan, I expected more from Christie too. Being in the Philly tv market, I get to see him on tv somewhat more than most people, and while I'm no fan of his politics, I've always kind of respected his direct way of speaking and his ability to not take everything so seriously. Last night he was kind of rambling and unfocused, and I thought that whole "you don't have to love Romney, just respect him" thing was really at odds with what Ann Romney had just said minutes before.

@Future hubby - As a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, I was seriously hoping that was finally Santorum's swan song before the mother ship comes to take him back to whatever planet he's from. PLEASE don't tell me they decided to let him man this outpost another four years......

I know democrats will spend a huge chunk of change on their convention stage as well but I could not help looking at the GOP stage and thinking why would anyone pay $2.5 million for that--must have been all that dark, very expensive wood they used! I read that it was Frank Lloyd Wright inspired and supposed to convey warmth, openness and approachability but that jumble of screens with constantly changing pictures just didn't convey anything except distracting confusion. Without anyone at the podium and nothing on the screens, the backdrop did have a Frank Lloyd Wright look in line and form.

Has everyone noticed that "We did build it" is exactly what President Obama has been saying? "We", as a community, have all contributed to this nations' success. If the GOP wanted to disagree with Obama, their slogan would have to be "I did build it". As the President said in the same speech that Republicans take out of context:

"The point is, that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

That is exactly the GOP slogan at their convention.

Christie merely said we don't support "union teachers" we support "teachers". It drew one of the biggest ovations of the night because it put emphasis on results and not on the special-interest unions.

Since Chuck Todd, the principal Obama appologist on NBC, couldn't find anything to take exception to in either speech, he decided to attack the Republicans by saying the two speeches conflicted.

Though it is crude, I can think of no more accurate nick name for Todd than "Brown-Noser-In-Chief."

They don't even cover news that they see as anti-republican -- they did not mention the Akin mess until a couple days later as if it didn't happen, their base wouldn't hear about it. And how rude to say someone is dumb because they watch a particular kind of news. You need to learn tolerance my friend.

Chuck Todd leans right. FYI, there were other analysts making that same claim and many of them lean to the right. The speeches conflicted in both tone and substance with nothing between the speeches to lead from one to the other.

I realize the loss of Monday required shifting and jamming speeches into Tuesday; but the GOP would have been better served if the day's events ended with Ann Romney's effort to humanize Mitt Romney. Instead, they ended with a pompous, arrogant, loud-mouthed bully--who gets wild cheers for being rude and obnoxious with the excuse that he's being honest and straight forward--who failed to even mention Romney until 17 minutes or so had passed. His efforts to rally the crowd behind Mitt failed miserably because Christie's speech was more about Christie and promoting himself as the future of the GOP.

My guess is that if Christie had spoken before Ann instead of after, the analysis would have been quite different.

I have read comments on here for a long time and people like you and Fiesty Red Head have no idea what you are talking about. You spit out DNC talking points with out any real research. I have seen so much false info on this site it is hilarious and most of it comes from so called tolerant liberals. And before you paint me as a racist republican let me tell you that I have never voted for a republican President and I won't now either. I believe we should let the Gays get married. The Drug War is a failure and wrongly targets minorities. Women should have birth control covered but only when it is a fix for a medical condition not just to prevent pregnancy. Did you not listen to the speeches? In case you didn't, the tone for yesterday evening was, "YOU DID BUILD THAT!" Oh, but that's right, the worst case of bias coverage ever conducted was last night's coverage by your own cable network, MSNBC. I have never in my life seen the amount of babble being spouted and called news, like it was last night.

You know, I used to watch MSNBC and it was enjoyable to watch. But last night, I flipped to it because my friends have been telling me about the severe liberal twisting that's taking place there. Years ago, you knew which side of the fence most of the reporters called home, but they didn't let it out so blatantly.

Journalists have a job to do and that's report what they see; not tainted with a fiercely strong opinion of whether it's aligned with their political affiliation. And it's definitely not the job of a journalist to sway public opinion and voters!

But perhaps MSNBC is not a representation of journalism. These days, calling MSNBC news is like calling Survivor a reality show.

I heard that yesterday and looked it up. In Florida we have a tourist tax that the state uses to fund projects such as arenas, stadiums, convention centers, etc. So if that was the money used then it was not the government but a tax paid by tourists and collected by the government or as the President would say it was a fee not a tax.

Mark even if the City built the building it was paid for with tax dollars. You know the tax dollars that successful people pay. It surely wasn't funded by the takers of this country.

1977 - I suggest you look into how public funding for convention centers and stadiums is arraigned. They are never just paid for with federal income "tax dollars." They are in fact subsidized by everyone in the area (including those poor enough to not owe federal income tax) though local special tax districts, secured and unsecured bonds, targeted sales taxes, hotel room fees, etc.

And yes, those businesses paying fees to sell in and on the convention property could not be selling there without the property existing. Therefore, "they did not build it alone", they appropriately bid for consignment contracts that would not have been available otherwise.

                            The Great Conservative Movement

The Great Conservative Movement, born out of the passage of the New Deal and the Great Society social safety net programs, was conconcted by a meeting of conservative leaders in the early to mid 20th century. Hell bent on ending these programs, they realized they could not do so after their passage, with simple repeal of the laws, or else they would suffer terribly at the polls. So, instead, they developed the "starve the beast" plan, in which they fool the people into thinking we need to spend like crazy on national defense and cut taxes for the rich and ignore the resulting defecits and mounting national debt, so that eventually, they reach a point where they can say, hey, we need to make hard choices here, we need to cut to the point of elimination all those New Deal and Great Society programs, because we just can't afford them anymore, cause we got to pay down this debt, oh, and we still need to spend like crazy on national defense or else we will be a weakened nation with no international clout, and we need to give more money to the job creators (tax cuts to the rich). My friends, this has been their plan, and Romney wants to continue it to full fruition, in honor of St. Reagan.

Very true. And the only reason they've got a shot is because the housing market blew up, the financial sector imploded and we face a world wide recession. All of which happened while their guy was starting a bogus war and pissing away the budget surplus he'd been handed. So the only card they have left to play is fear.

Actually the economy under Bush was doing great until January 2007. That is when the Dems took control of congress. Frank and Dodd took control of Housing and Financial Services. What happened 15 months later? Thats right Housing crashed and so did Financial Services. Funny Bush had over 50 months of growth before the dems took control of congress. Also wasn't it Bush who warned Barney Frank multiple times to get control of Fannie & Freddie? Wasn't it Barney Frank who dismissed those warnings? I know its hard to admit when your side failed you but you can do it. Just stop letting your ideology get in the way of facts. BTW I am not a republican or a Bush supporter.
