Santorum raises welfare, but lacks punch

In a convention with few reminders of the 2012 Republican primary just a few months ago, Rick Santorum brought everyone back.

The former Pennsylvania senator delivered a somber speech that was more about his personal story than a ringing endorsement of Mitt Romney. It hit on many of the same themes he pushed while pursuing his longshot presidential bid, including family values, marriage and abortion.

Addressing the Republican National Convention, Former Senator Rick Santorum broke from the recurring theme of criticising President Barrack Obama's fiscal policies to emphasize social issues.

In fact, even though Santorum was the first speaker to raise the welfare issue, his allusion to abortion was the best-received line of his speech.

“I thank God that America still has one party that reaches out their hands in love to lift up all of God’s children -- born and unborn -- and says that each of us has dignity and all of us have the right to live the American Dream,” Santorum said to a standing ovation.

On welfare, Santorum, who touted his work on welfare reform in the 1990s, accused the president of trying to “weaken our republic” and acting as if he were “above the law.”

President Obama’s policies undermine the traditional family, weaken the education system,” Santorum said. “And this summer he showed us once again he believes in government handouts and dependency by waiving the work requirement for welfare.

“I helped write welfare reform; we made the law crystal clear -- no president can waive the work requirement. But as with his refusal to enforce our immigration laws, President Obama rules like he is above the law. America take heed, when a president can simply give a speech or write a memo and change the law to do what the law says he can’t, we weaken our republic.”

Of course, the welfare attack has been widely discredited, and there is still a work requirement for welfare. There also was limited crowd reaction to the attack, which has become a mainstay of the Romney campaign on the trail and in millions of dollars in television ads.

Santorum needs to know that nobody likes a liar...not even a loving [though forgiving] God. There is no way that the work responsibility has been lifted. If they talked with real people on welfare they would know that.

Besides, the Catholic church has no use for his selfish philospophy.

You know you just have to agree with him... "blah people should not be given any breaks...I mean, if they don't have any pizzazz and they're just boring, why give them any assistance in any form. Blah people should be ignored because they are not at all interesting, so why take money from rich, interesting people and give it to blah, boring people and help them eat, feed their children, or get medical care? At least that's what he said he said....?

Santorum did bring into focus that in a Republic that our President cannot circumvent the law of the land as Obama did with exempting work from welfare and his violation of our Country's immigration laws.

hey hotdaddy- how many times do you need to be told that the claim obama exempted work is a total fabrication?- every single media and politcalwatch group and politcal analysist has looked at it and found it a complete steaming pile of falsehood!!! in fact the request for these waivers were made mainly by republican governors and are based on the heritage foundations thinktank suggestions from the bush era- you know the very conservative think tank- but continue to believe your partisan bs

There are plenty of liberals who would shut down Fox News or conservative radio talk-shows if they had the chance. I am a conservative yet I would never want to shut down liberal voices. I believe in free speech. I used to love to listen to Alan Combs and Jim Hightower, etc. I love to see liberals on these blogs. I say "let them talk". The more they talk the more ridiculous they sound. A talking liberal is the best promoter of conservatism in the world. Can't wait until the Democartic convention. The corn will be head high in North Carolina!

Harold: I personally would not favor shutting down Fox "News" ( unless of course they were found to have engaged in the type of rampant criminality alleged at other Murdoch vehicles ). I think that the whole spectrum of thought should be out there for people to choose as their life experience and wisdom dictate. From my rather limited experience with this site, I wouldn't declare either side as the less ridiculous-sounding. The loco-weed is head-high right here, partner.

          Harold
I'm a liberal and I wouldn't shut them down. But I do have a problem with calling them a 'news' source. In fact, they even put in their court pleadings that they weren't a news source and were under no requirement to tell the truth, and they won.

Personally I think all the networks and websites should have to meet a standard to be able to call themselves a 'news source'. Meaning that they should only report the news with no slant.

If they also want to have an 'analysis' section, fine, but people still think that 'news' means 'unbiased news' and these days it doesn't. It's mostly analysis. Which is usually slanted. It's confusing to folks who don't have the tine or resources to do their own research.

Why does the whole GOP platform try to tear this country apart?

Blame all the economy woe's on illegal immigrants, poor, race and religious issue's?

When the GOP's policies the Ryan plan have been rejected by every economist, and church's and groups, the Catholic bishops for example. Cutting tax's on the rich, more deregulation's, and cutting entitlements for children, poor and the elderly!

Saintorum you are a scary clown, who doesn't really know anything about family values, or what a true Christian acts like, or thinks!

It's so far past time for people to wake up in this country! The republicans want to abolish abortion, yet whine and cry about the welfare state that we have here and want to cut medicaid for the people who need it most, which are the children that they say MUST be born. Guess who is going to pay for all those unwanted children that will go into state care? The taxpayer, that's who! They want to put the elderly on a voucher system where they won't be able to afford their medications, but will be able to visit their doctors once or twice a year and if they need to go into a nursing home, they won't be able to afford to do so. They want to privatize social security. Do you really want the guys on Wall Street to have control over your benefits that you've paid into your whole working life? They have done such a good job of it so far haven't they, so let's just give them even more money to pi## away, right? They want to keep taxes low for the people who can afford it the most, while burdening the middle class who are barely holding on. They want to spend less on education as well. How are we supposed to keep up with the rest of the world if we have less than optimal educational opportunities? They want to keep taxes low, but refuse to cut spending on the military. Who's supposed to pay for that? Sorry, but fuzzy math just doesn't cut it any more. They want to cut spending everywhere except where it needs to be cut, starting with their wages and benefits and all those nice loopholes they jump through every year at tax time. What the republican party has failed to see is that as society goes, so goes the nation. If we have nothing but uneducated, poor, and sick people to do the jobs that need to be done, they won't GET done but will merely turn this once great beacon of the world into a third world country!

Best of the night? Wow! A ringing endorsement! All I have to hear is Bain and I know who I'm voting for. By the way, where is that fearless former commander of ours? It's like his military obligation. He's just not there. They're probably planning on sneeking him in the back way. Trouble is the Republiking faithful don't want him anywhere around and alas they just can't seem to shake the smell. It's the greedy ruling elite who are holding tight to those purse strings. It's certainly not the poor or the middle class that's holding up all these investment dollars! The truth is the republikings are the ones who must invest to make unemployment to go down! It must be killing them because even they know that if you don't invest you can't make money! They're pissing and moaning about jobs and the economy! Well, take some of the money Bush said you didn't have to pay in taxes and put it back in like you're supposed to. Oh? You say you don't want anything good to happen for this president? Well guess what boys, come November you're gonna get a good old fashioned ass kicking because this thing is nowhere near as close as they say. I hope your party sticks around though, because when you're talking about crooks, your best makes our worst look good.

Its amazing how so called Christan's in the GOP can just tell lie after lie. Which tells they are not Christan's. Here a bit of fun for you all,

            The beast (666) is upon us, FOX news F=6, O (15th letter) 1+5=6, X(24th letter) 2+4=6. Fox = 666

Revelations tells us the beast has 7 heads and 10 horns and 10 crowns which equal 27. If Romney is elected he will be the 27th elected Republican president. (Remember the Democrat- Republicans and the Whig Parties both turned into the Republican Party). FOX (Murdock) also owns 27 television stations in the USA.

Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beastcoming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

Bain Capital (Romney’s Baby) Owns Clear Channel which owns866 radio stations and Premiere Radio Networks, a national radio network that serves nearly 5,800 radio station affiliates and has over 213 million weekly listeners. Programs include the Rush Limbaugh Show, Glenn Beck and the Sean Hannity Show (Revelation 13:11 and he spake as a dragon)

Just maybe there is somthing else going here!

The Republicans do not really care about the abortion issue. I was told by a Illinois Republican Congressman that neither party wants to change anything about this issue. The Dems because of the votes they get and the Repubs because they can bring the issue up at every convention (hasn't it been brought up every 4 years??) and say they want to change it. If they don't have the abortion issue then they lose something that some people are very passionate about. Since 1980 (Reagan) we have had 20 Republican presidential years and 12 Democratic years. When will people learn that abortion is a non-issue to the pols and is being used for political fodder? As for 'family values', I'm sorry I don't want politicians inflicting their 'value systems' on me. Talk about something real: Taxes, jobs, social security, deteriorating infrastructure, education, health care etc.

Maybe that Republican congressman was just voicing his opinion because when you look at the facts since 2010 when they won the house they proposed bills as follows:

                44 Bills..........on Abortion
                99 Bills..........on Religion
                71 Bills .........on Family Relationships
                36 Bills..........on Marriage
                67 Bills..........on Firearms/Gun Control
                522 Bills........on Lowering Corporate Tax
                445 Bills........on Government Investigations

Therefore the proof is in the facts, and when in control they will force their values down your throat.

With them it's "Do as I say not as I do"

The problem I see from the GOP is this could be the 2000 convention. They are saying the same exact things, and we all know exactly where that led. 2008 was a watershed, and you are acting like nothing happened.

I spent over 23 years in service and worked beside many men and women of all races. In that time I worked with real "winners of all races and of course those who sit back and do the minimum required to get by, again there were members of all races in this catagory. I am "white" and have NO DIFFICULTY WORKING WITH MEN AND WOMEN OF ANY RACE because I have found most men and women want to do a good job and of course be recognized for doing a good job in their evaluations because this is the means to advancement. Most people have an particular area in which they excell and of course those in which they are not great, that includes me as well.

Tonight listening to Santorum and others tonight I was totally disgusted by their efforts to picture any race except whites as lazy and looking for welfare, food stamps and so forth. The U.S. is called the "melting pot" for a good reason, the continuous influx of immigrants has given us new strength in this nations continuing efforts to grow and to maintain our leadership in technology, education and standard of living. I will say that given the efforts of the republicans in local politics over the past 25 to 30 years on school boards and state level politics they have managed to undermine the high educational standards we as a nation once enjoyed for students in public schools.

As I said earlier, I see nothing but efforts to divide this nation along racial lines while seeking to do or say anything to win the white male voter and it disgusts me.

                      • Part of Chris Christy's speech tonight!

Let me be clear with the American people tonight. Here is
what we believe as Republicans and what they believe as
                      Democrats.

We believe in telling hardworking families the truth about
our country's fiscal realities, telling them what they already
know, the math of federal spending does not add up.
With $5 trillion in debt added over the last four years, we
have no other option but to make the hard choices, cut federal
spending and fundamentally reduce the size of this government.

Want to know what they believe? They believe that the
American people want to hear the truth about the extent of our
fiscal difficulties. They believe the American people need to
be coddled by big government. They believe the American people
are content to live the lie with them. They are wrong.
We believe in telling our seniors the truth about our
overburdened entitlements. We know seniors not only want these
programs to survive, but they just as badly want them secured
                      for their grandchildren.
                      Our seniors are not children.

Here's what they believe. They believe seniors will always
put themselves ahead of their grandchildren. And here's what
they do. They prey on their vulnerabilities and scare them with
misinformation for the single cynical purpose of winning the
next election. Here is their plan. Whistling happy tune while
driving us off a fiscal cliff as long as they are behind the
wheel of power when we fall.

Now, we believe that the majority of teachers in America
know our system must be reformed, to put students first so that
America can compete, that teachers don't teach to become rich or
famous. They teach because they love children.

We believe -- we believe we should honor and reward the
good ones, while doing what's best for our nation's future,
demanding accountability, demanding higher standards, and
demanding the best teacher in every classroom in America.
                      (
Get ready. Here is what they believe.
They believe the educational savages will only put
themselves ahead of children, that self- interest will always
trump common sense, they believe in pitting unions against
teachers, educators against parents, lobbyists against children.
They believe in teachers' unions . We believe in teachers.

We believe -- we believe that, if we tell the people the
truth, that they will act bigger than the pettiness we see in
Washington, D.C. We believe it is possible to forge bipartisan
compromise, and stand up for our conservative principles.

You see, because it has always been the power of our ideas,
not our rhetoric, that attracts people to our party. We win
when we make it about what needs to be done. We lose when we
play along with their game of scaring and dividing.

Make no mistake about it, everybody. The problems are too
big to let the American people lose. The slowest economic
recovery in decades, a spiraling out of control deficit, and an
education system that is failing to compete in the world. It
doesn't matter how we got here. There's enough blame to go
around. What matters is what we do now.

See, I know. I know we can fix our problems. When there
are people in the room who care more about doing the job they
were elected to do than they worry about winning reelection, it
is possible to work together, achieve principal compromise, and
get results for the people who give us these jobs in the first
                      place.

The people have no patience for any other way anymore. It
is simple. We need politicians to care more about doing
something and less about being something.

And believe me, believe me, if we could do this in a blue
state like New Jersey with a conservative Republican governor,
                      Washington is out of excuses.

                      Leadership delivers. Leadership counts. Leadership
matters. And here's the great news I came here tonight to bring
you. We have this leader for America. We have a nominee who
will tell us the truth and will lead with conviction. And now
he has a running mate who will do the same. We have Governor
Mitt Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan to we need to make them
the next president and vice-president of the United States!
                      (APPLAUSE)
See, I know Mitt Romney, and Mitt Romney will tell us the
hard truths we need to hear, to put this back on a path to
growth and create good paying private sector jobs again in
                      America.
Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to year to
end the torrent of debt that is compromising our future and
                      burying our economy.
Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to
end the debacle of putting the world's greatest care system in
the hands of federal bureaucrats and putting those bureaucrats
between an American citizen and her doctor.

Now we ended an era of absentee leadership without purpose
or principal in New Jersey. I am here to tell you tonight, it
is time to end this era of absentee leadership in the oval
office and send real leaders to the White House. America needs
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and we need them right now.

Sometimes the world seems like a big hole. You spend all your life shouting down
it and all you hear are echoes of some idiot, named Daniel Streiberg yelling nonsense down
                        a hole.

Definition of Socialism: Which right wing whangadoddles do NOT know.

Socialism: Is a principle according to which the assets of an enterprise or other organization are held indivisibly rather that in the names of the individual members or by a public institution such as a Government and therefore in contrast to public ownership thus rather than being owners of the enterprise, it's members are trustees of it's assets for future generations.

Public is property which is owned by the State, City, Community, or tribe. This is in contrast to private property owned by an individual person or artificial entities that represent the financial interest of persons such as Corporations.

America does NOT have such a system NOW or NEVER did.

Righteous Rick is a liar, he does believe in welfare and government handouts.

He's all for corporate welfare and handouts to the 1%.

We threw him out of Pennsylvania, that's why he tried for President.

If the Republicans are serious about winning in November all they need to do is make sure as many people as possible read "The Secret Bigotry of Liberalism". The five star rated book on amazon.com. Even liberals have changed their minds after reading this amazing book.

                        • You can watch this movie now.

It's only 30 minutes, available online, and was made by the Newt Gingrich SuperPac - Winning Our Future.

BTW, Newt will be a featured speaker at The GOP Convention, on Thursday between 7 and 8 PM. His speech is listed on the GOP Agenda as follows:

Remarks by former House Speaker and GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and wife Callista Gingrich

Based on this convention, Republicans are not serious about winning in November. It's clear they have given up and are concentrating on 2016.

The truth is, the GOP knew from the start they had no one who could beat Obama, so they let Romney have the nomination.

They know Romney will lose, but the payoff is, they will never have to let another Mormon run for president from their party, because they can always point back to Mitt and say, "We gave your guy a chance and he blew it."

The ONLY people in the Republican Party who think Romney has a chance are the drones who have been programmed by the GOP Mullahs.
