The former Pennsylvania senator delivered a somber speech that was more about his personal story than a ringing endorsement of Mitt Romney. It hit on many of the same themes he pushed while pursuing his longshot presidential bid, including family values, marriage and abortion.
Addressing the Republican National Convention, Former Senator Rick Santorum broke from the recurring theme of criticising President Barrack Obama's fiscal policies to emphasize social issues.
In fact, even though Santorum was the first speaker to raise the welfare issue, his allusion to abortion was the best-received line of his speech.
“I thank God that America still has one party that reaches out their hands in love to lift up all of God’s children -- born and unborn -- and says that each of us has dignity and all of us have the right to live the American Dream,” Santorum said to a standing ovation.
On welfare, Santorum, who touted his work on welfare reform in the 1990s, accused the president of trying to “weaken our republic” and acting as if he were “above the law.”
“President Obama’s policies undermine the traditional family, weaken the education system,” Santorum said. “And this summer he showed us once again he believes in government handouts and dependency by waiving the work requirement for welfare.
“I helped write welfare reform; we made the law crystal clear -- no president can waive the work requirement. But as with his refusal to enforce our immigration laws, President Obama rules like he is above the law. America take heed, when a president can simply give a speech or write a memo and change the law to do what the law says he can’t, we weaken our republic.”
Of course, the welfare attack has been widely discredited, and there is still a work requirement for welfare. There also was limited crowd reaction to the attack, which has become a mainstay of the Romney campaign on the trail and in millions of dollars in television ads.

dste.. Do NOT forget that the bailout was APPROVED BY A DEMOCRATIC CONTROLLED HOUSE AND SENATE...OF WHICH OBAMAwas a voting member. WE must all remember the Democrtic control of the HOUSE AND SENATE started in 2007. Remeber Bush was not in control after Januaryt of 2007. All bills after that date are the the possession of the Democrats until 20011.

Once again, until the Repubs/Baggers come up with a well-defined plan as to how they intend to care for all these sacred children who are unfortunate results of unwanted pregnancies, especially rape victims, they are simply blowing hot air. Their grandiose stance on "the sanctity of life" is at best obnoxious. At its worst, that stance is unconscionable, egregious and disingenuous. All of these qualities are the hallmarks of Santorum. "What a piece of work is Rick, how ignoble in reason".
Okay it is well established fact. President Obama has not waived the work requirement in welfare. But Ricky manged to sneak in another distortion of the the truth. The distortion is about federal guaranteed student loans. While castigating President Obama's accomplishments Santorum said that President Obama nationalized the student loan program. He implied that this is a bad thing. But the question is who is it bad for, the students, or the over-fed bankers? Under the Obama administration, college students can now get loans at a much lower interest rate. As a Christian I am outraged that another so-called Christian can go before the American people and mislead them with outright lies and distortions. I am even angrier at the self-proclaimed spiritual leader for letting him get away with this.
It always amazes me that Santorum and the rest of the republicans point out that there are a lot more people on welfare under Obama. Well duuhh! We are in recovery mode from a deep recession, which, by the way, both parties had a part in causing (mainly the republicans though with finishing off deregulation that Clinton started). Obama did not cause these people to be on welfare. The numbers will decrease as the jobs situation improves, which it has been - just not at a fast enough pace, thanks to republican obstruction and filibustering of jobs bills and also because of so many government jobs being lost, which did affect the unemployment rate and helped slow recovery a bit. The republicans trash welfare recipients after their policies helped put them there. By the way, a good deal of welfare recipients do work. they are the working poor. In case no one has noticed, minimum wage cannot support a family, and wages have been in decline while the cost of everything has gone up. Gee, I wonder who is getting all that money from paying the middle class and the poor so poorly? This is no way to make a strong middle class with a strong economy. How is a person supposed to save for retirement, social security, college, etc., if there is no money left over to put away?
Thumbs up on your post, Must add that many people would not be on welfare if the Republicans in the House of Representatives would pass the job bills President Obama sent to them. The have by their own admission would let the American people suffer just so they can limit President Obama to one term and in my opinion that amounts to treason.

If you really want to be an informed voter you should watch the entire BOTH the Republican AND Democratic conventions and see what they are all about check what their speakers say. ALSO SEE 2016 the movie, and see THE HOPE AND THE CHANGE when it comes to TV in October. This is that important of an election.

A repeated comment I heard from the convention last night, was that the President added a 5 trillion debt in the last four years to the country's overall debt. The camera would then pan up to the jumbo debt-tron and it was at 15 trillion and change. If the bush administration started with a surplus in 2000, wouldn't it stand to reason that Bush/Cheney policies and everyone who (Ryan) supported them with their vote are responsible for 2/3's of that debt?

Boy, I was really impressed that the Santorum's have taken such care of their daughter with Trisomy 18. Isn't it lucky that everyone who has such an infant has sufficient income to cover the estimated $250,000 a year it costs to take care of such a child. And it's also fortunate that they have a loving husband that will help accomplish this care and will work so that the mother can stay home - a home properly equipped - to give the required care. And it's also fortunate that everyone who finds themselves pregnant has easy access to free or inexpensive prenatal care so that Trisomy 18 or Downs or other related conditions can be diagnosed. And further that in the worst case, they have access to counseling and support in the case they termination is the best choice. And still further that such termination is easily and legally available.
I can not vote for anyone that lies to me.
