GOP approves delegate rule changes over vocal objections

TAMPA, Fla. -- Republican leaders pushed through contentious changes to delegate rules over the objection of conservatives and supporters of Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Loud boos erupted Tuesday on the floor of the Republican National Convention as RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, ruled that a voice vote was sufficient to approve credentialing rules for delegates at future conventions.

Delegates shout in protest over changes in Republican party rules that would restrict the impact of grassroots movements, before a vote to adopt the new rules during the second session of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, August 28, 2012.

Chants that sounded like "Seat them now!" did battle with chants of "U-S-A" from supportive delegates seeking to shout the protestors down.

The rules change essentially tightens party control over the manner in which delegates are allocated and bound to candidates.

A delegate rule change by RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and House Speaker John Boehner was approved despite the vocal objections of conservatives and supporters of Texas Rep. Ron Paul at the Republican National Convention.

The proposal prompted frustration from some supporters of Paul, whose campaign was able to appeal to the somewhat arcane rules of delegate allocation to win a majority of four states' delegations, despite having failed to win a single nominating contest.

Other conservatives -- including 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin -- had protested the move as a power play to shut out grassroots conservatives.

As Priebus and Boehner brought up the controversial rules change for a voice vote, supporters replied with loud "ayes," and almost equally vocal "noes."

When Boehner determined, in his capacity as the convention's permanent chairman, that the ayes had won it, cheers and boos mixed together in the convention hall.

Romney and Clyde will be the new Front-men of the Bush Jr. Administration.

The same old pasty faces will be there behind the scenes...

NO further evidence needed, the GOP is a top-down organization. When the people are frusterated to the point of having to organize themselves to get a message to GOP machine, the machine just changes the rules to shut them off.

I had to listen twice. Sounded equally loud from both "benches" to me. But then that did not seem to really matter. The majority had been decided, whether it was the majority or not. Unique concept.

Thanks for demonstrating you haven't the foggiest idea what communism is.

Which is de rigueur for conservatives.

(and kennyw, we DO realize it, but putting it in words is mean)

In 21st century America, communism or the threat of, means that evil people are plotting to preserve Medicare and Social Security, and force Banks, HMO's, Big Pharma, Big Oil and Coal, to abide by some government regulations.

God Bless Obama and God Bless the United States. May God take the hatred and lies told by the RNC at their convention and turn it around in President Obamas favor! How did such a bunch get any control of anything in our country? I agree with some of their stances which are hidden way under the hate but I do not agree with their methods and the tactics they use to try to win votes. It just shows they are big losers whether they win anything or not.

Why did they change the rules? The same reason they changed voter ID laws. Romney cannot win, if we saw how much discourse was in the Republican Canvention Hall. The Ron Paul Supporteres and states were forced to sit in the upper deck where they could not affect the main floor control of Romney's backers. So, the fix was in. Just like the fix in Pennsylvania is in by removing over a million past voters unless they spend money (poll tax, illegal) to get the proper new photo ID to cast a vote. This is taking our democracy and tossing it into a blocking of popular votes, for the sake of winning an election based on the party, not on the ideas of the candidates. For Republicans, all is fair, as long as they win.......

When the Republican Party allowed Herman Cane to be shoved aside I knew they weren't any more intrested in rescuing the USA any more than the Liberals. This idea was reinforced when our Chief Justice turned his back on the American people. Now the RNC exposes its respect for us by allowing the LOUDEST group to be the voters instead of a documented count. This way just ONE person gets to decide which group won. Does anyone else feel as if they are living in Obamaland?

It seems very clear that this whole thing is definitely rigged and we, the people, do not have any say whatsoever....and those who are supporting this type of candidates are going to find out the hard way...I hated to see this but are we prepared for the worse?

LOVE the "USA" chants cheering the death of democracy. That's what the GOP stands for these days. Do anything to win--even destroying democracy.

Well, it appears that this RNC is definitely having its own agenda and rules and we, the people, have nothing to say about it but those who support the RNC pick for the candidate, they will listen to them and well, I'm trying to say...they will find out the hard way...I will NOT vote for Romney or Obama....the truth WILL show up because NO ONE is expecting the real truth only what they want to see and predict. That's all I have to say...

I don't know why the conservatives were surprised by being disenfranchised at their own convention. After all, that is what the Republican Party is trying to do to ALL Americans - except those who are Republican. Kind of sounds like the Russian Communist Party has landed here - and now calls itself the Republican Party.

Somehow the poor believe that the social issues will be effected by their vote. They are wrong. Even if the Republicans have the will to legislate, nobody can legislate morality. There were abortions before Roe v Wade. There are drugs today, and drunks during prohabition. Some others may believe that effecting capital gains taxes will help them. Again, if they are the 99%, it will not. Most middle class investors own stocks through their 401ks when they cash out their gains, it will be at their tax rate at the time and not capital gains. Even if capital gains are at 15%, I pay at a 35% rate. This would be even more clearly shown through looking at the Romneys' tax returns.

If they can't even run a room full of fellow Republicans, how do they think that they can run a country. The whole world is watching and we look like total idiots. The Republican platform has an abortion plank in it, but Romney and Ryan say that they do not agree with it. This is like Oz where we are told not to look at that man behind the curtain. They think I am for it, but I may be against it. Wink Wink
