Updated, 1:30 p.m. - TAMPA, Fla. -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that Republicans "can't just trot out a brown face" to make inroads with the Latino community, an increasingly important growing bloc.
As the GOP prepares to showcase some of its rising Hispanic stars during the next two days of its national convention, the Democratic mayor dismissed Republican overtures toward Latinos as insincere.
"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," Villaraigosa said at a press conference here organized by the Democratic National Committee.
Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., joins The Daily Rundown to talk about the convention and diversity in the GOP.
"People are going to vote just like Anglos do, just like African-Americans do, and virtually every demographic group. They vote for people based on what they say, what they've done, and what they're going to do," he later added.
Among the Latinos speaking in Tuesday's Republican National Convention programming are Rep. Francisco Canseco, R-Texas. Sher Valenzuela, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Delaware, Republican Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Texas GOP Senate nominee Ted Cruz.
But, other staunch opponents of illegal immigration -- like Iowa Rep. Steve King, who's speaking as well on Tuesday -- will also be among the featured voices in the day's program.
"I don't think it's going to do much for him, frankly," Villaraigosa said of the GOP's overall message.
The Los Angeles mayor predicted that President Barack Obama would win "close to 70 percent" of the Latino vote in his re-election effort; Romney advisers have set a goal in the upper-30th percentile in targeting Hispanic voters.
Latino voters are of particular importance in swing states like Colorado, Florida and Virginia -- a sign of shifting demographics that Republicans have worried would put them at a long-term political disadvantage unless they were to become more welcoming of Latinos.
Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said in response to today's Democratic bracketing event: "Today, as we learn that more than a quarter of Democrats believe President Obama does not have a clear plan for creating jobs, his surrogates in Tampa continued to launch false and baseless attacks against Governor Romney. The facts speak for themselves – with 23 million Americans struggling for work, nearly one in six Americans living in poverty, and median incomes declining, the Obama campaign cannot defend a record of broken promises and failed policies. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a plan to strengthen the middle class by creating jobs and turning around our economy."

What if all those swarms of earthquakes turned out to be a volacno that erupted around November. That would suck.
Obama had a democratic congress for his first two years and didn't do anything. Now the second two years he's been campaigning. This is going to be another Peanut Farmer/Reagan election. People are afraid to say they don't like Obama because then they'll be called racist. If it wasn't for the white vote, Obama wouldn't be president. He runs around Europe apologizing for the U.S. all the time. If it wasn't for the U.S. - the french would be speaking german - along w/ most of Europe.
Mikki-2545976 "He runs around Europe apologizing for the U.S. all the time." And yet another Republican lie. Show me one, just one, quote in which President Obama apologized for the U.S. More talking points from Republican Fox drones.
Just look at the audience at the Republican convention - white elitist males. Then watch the Democrat Convention and see the diversity of races, men and women from different classes (mostly the nearly extinct middle-class - which Romney/Ryan have no plan to help - show me the plan and show me Willard's tax returns!).
I DOUBLE-DOG dare every Republican on this board to give up your future and/or current Medicare and Social Security benefits. Then go tell every Republican lawmaker to give up ALL their government benefits and start paying out of their own pockets - especially Ryan! If you aren't gonna be a part of the "problem" then you should walk the talk!! Pay out of your pocket!
oh yeah give it up to you who are too lazy to work for your own...sorry dumb a$$
Kumic,The middle class is working to earn a living and can't afford to go to these conventions.Obama's attendees are union hacks, not for profits and welfare recipients,no doubt being paid to attend.
Looking at the Democratic convention always reminds me of the local blood bank where all the street people gather in the morning to sell blood so they can buy alcohol and drugs. Very diverse Democrats they are.
Good gracious, the Republicans could "trot out" Mahatma Gandhi and the Obama hate machine would paint even him as the anti-christ.
Hey Obama you failed. Taxing the so called %1, Borrowing more money from China to fund your government spending, and printing more money is not a recipe for success. That is no plan and will only serve up more debt, more failure.
Food stamps and soup kitchen lines is no future we want.
RR
The republican standard operating procedure is that they will promise women, latinos and african americans the moon for their votes, and wants elected they will tell all of them to get the back of the bus and then pander to the well to do and rich.
David,You are talking about what the Democratic party has been doing. We woman in America are not in the back of the line as most small businesses are owned by women.Small businesses,I might add, that were here thriving under Bush and going downhill since Obama's reign.
Congradulations lady, I bet the republican party is proud of you that you can spout thier talking point so well. To bad they did not reward you with a seat at their convention.
Just to add lady, you might not remember, but Bush put a committee together with the thought of basically putting some serious restraints on Title IX which helped advance females in sports and business. They toured the country, and when they came to California I attended their meeting, and although I did not speak, several women from the sports world and business world did, and when their tour was over, Bush had to back off. Yep, Bush was sure looking out for the females of the country.
Anecdotal evidence from a liar lol. You are laughable Davey.
Jeff, why aren't you in your third grade classroom today, you know someday you do have to be able to go on to the fourth grade, you can't spend your entire life there, and does your mother know that your home playing on the computer?
Jeff-1570172 Yes,David thinks that all women business owners need government handouts in order to succeed.I'm doing it all by myself and Obama has not been along side me cleaning those toilets. But he at least recognizes that I am a lady.
And lady, you may not want to admit it, but without Title IX you might not have gotten as far as you have. And by the way, I don't want to be as crass as Jeff, but I have to assume you are a lady for that is what you are calling yourself in your name.
And by the way lady, Title IX is not a handout. It was a law passed to insure that you had the same chances as everyone else and that you could not be stopped or held back just because of your gender.
If it is money that is handed out, it is a handout. It's money given away. How do you define a handout..?
And the only true way to stamp out sexism and racism is to stop. bringing. it. up.
I am also a female business owner. Kudos to you, Just a cleaning lady! I'm proud of women who fight their way up without demanding money. If the business next to me doesn't get a handout, why should I? It doesn't matter what the person that owns the business next to me looks like. At all.
It's called life. Yes, admittedly, sometimes it sucks. But just because it sometimes sucks does not mean the government owes me a check to make the Suck go away.
Cut it out. Cut it all out--all the extra spending, all the handouts, all the backup plans, and the backup plans for the backup plans, and just live your life. Our government would end up the size of a pea, and if we live or when we die will be based on how well we plan and live our own lives. There would be a LOT more money to go around. **sigh**
I get a kick out of all these business owners that have time to sit and post on the internet!!!
Oh yeah, Villaraigosa speaks well of his race. Have you been to LA lately? 80% of the people born in that county is from illegal Mexican families. LA smells like a dump, looks like dump. Latinos running wild all hours of the day. It's a Mexican cesspool. The odds of a new SUV being stolen is 5 to 2 right now in L.A.
These people don't care about politics. That's why they snuck into this country. As long as Uncle Sam provides them with freebee everything, they don't care if the POTUS is black, white, green, democrat, republican, etc.
The people from San Diego look @ L.A. as a lost tribe of displaced animals from a zoo.
sad part is you are correct
TopDrum,
Of course, we all know that the City of San Diego raises hard-working, law-abiding, upstanding all-American white boys, right? Been to an Aurora, CO movie theater lately?
San Diego is one big glass house, Drumbo.
People are scrambling out of Cali. They are in horrible debt with entitlements. Cities broke, it is a hell hole. San Jose had to lay off 200 cops they are so broke. They are being replaced by illegals.

Villaraigosa is a socialist La Raza Mole
correct you are....he is a pariah for all except illegals
racist fool.....like your LA tenure is an example for any politician......you are out next election
Racist? Try to take a jog in Compton, you will see real racism,
Of course you'll be taking the big dirt nap and will not be in position to appreciate the lesson.
Stupius Publius, i was talking about Villaragosa.......any race can be racist! saw this coming years ago so now I only fear a bullet and i walk where I like
Short Bus Tard Tom, you have no idea what a racist is,
You need a lesson.
lets meet big shot....anytime...we will see who gets the lesson......P.S. your comment about retarded persons is racist against them...
We feel your hate. Is that your solution? Kill or beat some one because they disagree or offend you?
Take that jog in Compton, then we will see how much of a tuff guy you think you are.
Compton is one town in the entire nation. One town. The politics of the nation as a whole should not be based on the demographics, level of violence, or general pop culture of one town.
It should be proportionately represented, but not over-represented. And that's all.
So unless Compton is not being represented politically, the city has absolutely nothing to complain about. No one can fix Compton but Compton. And that is the way it has always been. The government isn't going to do it for you. The confusion and complaining has come from people thinking the government is EVER going to come in and fix the town. They are not. That is not even the function of government.
Good people have to stand up and fight back. End of story. So this has nothing to do with this article.
Who cares? Both parties need to stop pandering to the Latinos who's largest issue is to get all their relatives legalized instead of deported. Both parties' pandering are the reason our country was left wide open after 9/11 instead of sealing the borders. We are jeopardizing everything just because both parties want the votes more than they want what is best for the country.
According to Pew Research, Gallup and many other polls, 87% of Republicans are non-Hispanic whites. Why? 36.6 percent of the total U.S. population are minorities. Democratic Party, on the other hand, has more than three times the percentage of nonwhites among its identifiers as does the GOP. It's laughable when tea party, conservative, Republicans call liberal Dems racists. The numbers don't lie. Minorities don't feel comfortable with the Republican Party. Why?
let's stick to the campaign and your candidate's pathetic performance of the last 4 years.......
Polls are just that,polls.
More race-baiting from the loony left, who know that they cannot run on Obama's pathetic performance.
Talking point lies not worth listening to.
With all due respect Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, you are dead wrong. Most of the voting public is entirely ignorant about voting issues, what the candidates stand for, etc. They vote with the party. or the color. I have many black friends who voted for Obama (and will vote for him again) simply because he is a brother. No other reason whatsoever. They don't understand a thing about the economy or what all the democrats wonderful social programs are doing to the debt load we are passing on to our children. There needs to be reform and yes, the rich need to pay more taxes but not the 90% they were taxed in the 40's, 50's and 60's. And if you think I'm wrong, read your history. That is why the rich (of which I am definitely not a part as I live from one unemployment check to the next) fight so hard to keep the taxes from being raised. FDR began raising tax on the rich and never stopped. He even wanted a 100% tax at one point but his advisors convinced him that wouldn't work. This is not conjecture or something I made up. It is in the history books as I did a research paper on it last spring for a college class I was taking. Color does matter and it is a big reason why Obama was elected and will probably be elected again despite the damage he has done while in the white house.
For Americas sake and our liberty, I hope you are wrong
I am really offended (but not surprised) by the comments on this board. I am a Hispanic woman who has never been on government assistance, works and pays her taxes. Although I am from a middle class background I have come to the realization that working hard is no longer enough to help you move ahead. College has become out of reach for many, home ownership became the biggest scan ever, trickle down economics are not working. The only solutions the Republicans have is to keep tax cuts for the rich, huge tax loopholes for corporations, limit (and eventually eliminate) abortion in all cases, dumb down education, cut health care (kill ACA) and beat Obama (this is their central goal). Congress has become so dysfunctional that they can't work together for the people. The odds are stacked against main street. We need to get these toxic elements out of out government. We can't let our children grow up in an America full of hatred, ignorance about basic science, and lack of civil discourse. If your congressman refuses to work for you, reach agreements, work on a jobs program and is in the pockets of big business, vote him out.
...well don't vote Democrat if you want any of those things.....they will continue to take all your hard earned money and give it to people who hate you......is that the new America to you????
The repubs will keep YOUR taxes low also, not just the rich. But I would prefer Reagans Trickle down ecomomics over Obama's Trikle up Poverty.
When Republican Reagan "gave" amnesty to illegal aliens, it was acceptable and a good thing. When Democrat President Obama opens a "deferral program", it's hell on earth. The program that Obama put out has several difficult requirements to meet. It's a potential path to citizenship and not amnesty. For those people who like to "sound" intelligent by spewing inaccurate information, they need to compare the Reagan amnesty vs. Obama deferral program. Latinos make up a big percentage of our country and they will vote on Election Day. Having some rich White guy in the White House doesn't reflect on the common folks of our nation. Romney is a disaster and if enough people see the pro-Gingrich video, they'll see why:
Reagan had an excuse due to his dementia.Obama on the other hand is doing this to gain votes.
Another lefty that know no history what so ever.
It was not Reagan that gave the amnysty. It was the democrates. The Dems made a "compromising" deal with Reagan, because he refused to give amnysty, that if he gave this amnysty, the Dem congress would secure the border after words. As you can see, the dems lied, yet again.
Villaraigosa is almost as disliked and ridiculed as Gov Moonbeam. How did my native state fall to such morons for leadership?
Mr. Mayor you just BLEW THEIR COVER and the Republican " BIG TENT LIE ".
teapublican strategists know very well it's just a matter of time, before simple demographic trends make their party all but irrelevant on the national political stage..
The teapublican party is about 90% white... But the % of white voters are an ever DECREASING % of total voters..
Which of course is why teapublicans are pushing the voter suppression efforts so hard..
They know,.. it's their only hope... And probably, their last....
Yes its wonderful to see America becoming more colorful. In fact as America tumbles from the top in a free fall towards the bottom it will become even more colorful. Rising color level. Diminishing income level, educational level, influence level, woo hoo, vote for Obama so we can fail faster. Be colorful.
The mayor of L.A. is himself a racist.People who make these kinds of remarks are not fit to hold any office in this country.Villar wants to keep the racism going because he is not for diversity.
What is wrong with half of you morons on this post? What in the article is racist? The whole point of the article was the Mayor saying that in order for Mittens to win the election (and the Hispanic vote), the GOP has
to do more than show or parade a bunch of Hispanics at the Convention. In other words, he is saying that a candidate’s policies are what is important and not simply the color of one's skin. Now we have morons and troglodyte's crying racism when the man is saying the same exact thing you all have been. This is
absolutely amazing!! Have we, as a country, gotten to the point where people are so extreme that they can no longer view statements in an impartial light? Based on the quality of posts I have read so far, if this is what the Right is about, Mittens will lose!!
And yes, I am calling him "Mittens" b/c although I am Independent; I have no intentions of voting for the Romney/Ryan fiasco. For me, Mittens touts his superior business skills and ability to "make things
happen." However, if I view his candidacy based on his major point of why we should elect him (i.e. his business skills) - essentially, he is applying for a job and refusing to present his resume. What company, on the face of the earth, would hire a CEO w/o first asking that individual to present and explain his resume (resume here means - 1. tax returns 2. what specific deductions he plans to eliminate 3. lies about the current welfare programs and ignoring the truth 4. tax policies-which are nothing new and same old failed tactics that
have been discredited by every honest, non-partisan economist 5. the man lacks a core - it's alright to change your mind and positions on some things, but not EVERYTHING 6. the fact that the Olympics under his reign received SUBSTANTIAL government funding and now he is crying against that same funding 7. lack of
interest in really investing in America - you cannot tell me that you believe in investing in the American ideal but when you had the chance to actually do so, you sent your money overseas in tax havens - c'mon 8. naturally, anyone who immediately tells me to take "his word" for it, instead of actually just being forthright, is automatically a liar to me b/c you are hiding something 9. he gets his advice on women from Anne Romney—WTF?--are you incapable of or are you so out of touch that you cannot relate to women on your own; and Anne Romney, the woman has not worked a day in her life, how can she relate to the mother who has to wake up at 6am, prepare breakfast, get the children ready, see them off on the school bus, walk to the bus stop to catch
her bus to make it into to work? I don’t take anything from her as a mother, but as someone who can relate to the problems REAL working class women face each day…please, sit down 10. the fact that he is a CEO and like all CEO's, will say one thing to one audience but when he is behind closed doors, will say another 11. Just the inability to relate to the everyday individual - I need a President that I can at least "pretend" like he is on my side....and so on and so on. Sorry, I am not ideologically motivated - abortion, guns, race, marriage - are factors that may be important to some, but really do not drive my decision when voting for a President. I honestly believe that Mitt Romney and Lying Ryan are not right for this country and will actually send us
back into a deeper recession...or worst...a 1950's way of thinking. Leave the Past where it belongs....IN THE PAST!
With a debt heading north of $16 Trillion, which is now $1 Trillion more than our GDP, and facing the largest fiscal crisis in the history of man kind, your as dense as depleted uranium if you think for one minute that this election should be about tax returns.
Especially when GM and GE pay no taxes.
Publius - you can pick and choose what I wrote all you want, but my point still stands. It's not solely about damn tax returns. That's meaningless. It's the totality of the package. And YES, the debt is important!! But I wonder how honest you are being with yourself. The very budget that Romney/Ryan has proposed (which lacks real specifics) would not get close to balancing the budget until damn near 2040 (and that's assuming that all of their plans go accordingly and that there is no great problems...which is as "dense as depleted uranium..." Unlike others who spout off at the mouth, I have facts and can backup anything I say on these posts. Anyday you want to challenge me, please feel free to do so. But I will let you know, I don't care about how you "feel" on X, "believe" on Y, "heard" on Z....please come with the cold hard facts....move on!
@Bill BoB Philly - res ipsa loquitur
Seriously? You can look yourself in the mirror and ask "do I really think that taxing the %1, Borrowing more money from China to pay for more government spending, and the fed printing more money, is the plan for success and will balance the budget in no time".
That's Obama's plan.
If you can look yourself in mirror and say "yes", to that plan, your proof that their is something denser than depleted uranium.
In June, an NBC/WSJ Poll showed that only 1% of African Americans supported Romney. 1%! This number doesn't support Villaraigosa's statement:
And please leave the racist accusations to yourself.
I have to strongly disagree with the last paragraph. Romney has "NO" plan. He keeps referring to “HIS” plan and "I know how to do it, trust me." He has a plan to gut government of departments, entitlements, and regulations controlling business. That is "NOT" a jobs plan. His plan is to "Bainerise" government. Bain Capital worked out well for him, but not so well for workers.
Congress has done "NOTHING" during the past two years assure job opportunities. Congress has done "NOTHING" to discourage American Corporations from sending jobs offshore. Congress has done "NOTHING" to encourage jobs in America. What they have done is to make sure The “JOB CREATORS” have low taxes and stimulus funds with no control over what they do with the funds. Why does Republican rhetoric not mention their role in this?
Compromise is what is needed. High school civics class still is about the responsibilities of the three branches of government. It sure isn’t supposed to work this way.
The truth is that one party has deliberately tanked the economy and has their collective mouths in overdrive putting all the blame on Obama. Tanking the economy has hurt the working class and retirees. Somehow big business has been immune from the problem.
My retirement funds haven’t kept up and I put the blame on the party who wants to take more away so that their benefactors have plenty. Vote out the “OBSTRUCTIONISTS.” ZEEK
My retirement funds have done fabulously well. If you've lost money blame the face you see in the mirror.
Mr. Villaraigosa: WTF have the democrats done for us 'latinos'.. (god i hate the word)... all you talk to us about is how we're victims of everything and how you'll give us free services etc etc.. dont give me a fish.. give me a fishing pole!
He cant give you a fishing pole, he was too busy going to Laker games and the Oscars till he got caught and found dirty by the state commission. But like a true Lib, he didnt come clean, he tried to blame others. Only till he was caught without any reasonable doubt on being dirty, did he strike a deal of a fine....
Strange on how the city controller wants to do a audit on some books in LA, but Tony V, is blocking it with some bs about "privilege." Sound familiar to Obama?
Concur with JuanPerez! The La Mayor has had an easy life and forgets about the hard working common person trying to scrape to provide for their family. See what elitism and arrogance will do for you? Obama and the mayor are two peas in a pod! Except maybe Obozo loves his weed more than the mayor loves booze!
Zeek,Clinton actually hurt retirees. He is the president who made sure that those who earned a received retirement money before the age of 59 1/2 had to roll it over to what the government deemed a qualified IRA or there would be a 10% tax due to the IRS on top of the 10% Federal tax to the IRS.Those qualified IRA's of course consisted of Mutual funds that had little or no returns.Clinton started this demise for the baby boomer retirees.I know because I now have no retirement funds.Obama has not done anything for retirees. He's made sure that we will work until we drop.
The Dem party really has not done any homework regarding Tony Vilar AKA Antonio Villaraigosa.
The worst mayor ever in LA. They made this guy a chair or co-chair for the Dem Convention. Even the extremely strong Asian power brokers in LA who are extremely Liberal and Dem to the core think the guy a joke.
How many times did this guy flunk the BAR exam again and still never passed it.
LA Unified in shambles, the streets full of pot holes, police force neutered, more than half the DWP bill is a fee or tax, cheated on his wife with a news reporter and the list way too long....
Best line ever by Tony V., " we clean your toliets." Classic Tony V.
The La Mayor needs to stop throwing around the brown! It is the economy Stupid! The latino citizens have higher unemployment along with the women and other minorities! Just because you have a nice pay check and don't have to scrape to get by doesn't mean others do! Get real and wise up!
Must be his memebship in La Raza. You know the La Raza slogan, "for the race eveything for others nothing."
Good post. La Raza is in every California State and city offices and department.
The ones at the DMV get their illegal comrades fake ID's. If you call them out on it, or even "Illegal", it can be a hate crime. Great. Cali, please sink into the ocean after the next earth quake swarm.
Libs playing the race card again.
"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate,"
I guess what he's really saying is that if there is a hispanic speaker, he couldn't possibly have anything of any value to say...
Give me a break!
