Villaraigosa: Republicans 'can't just trot out a brown face'

Updated, 1:30 p.m. - TAMPA, Fla. -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that Republicans "can't just trot out a brown face" to make inroads with the Latino community, an increasingly important growing bloc.

As the GOP prepares to showcase some of its rising Hispanic stars during the next two days of its national convention, the Democratic mayor dismissed Republican overtures toward Latinos as insincere.

"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," Villaraigosa said at a press conference here organized by the Democratic National Committee.

Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., joins The Daily Rundown to talk about the convention and diversity in the GOP.

"People are going to vote just like Anglos do, just like African-Americans do, and virtually every demographic group. They vote for people based on what they say, what they've done, and what they're going to do," he later added.

Among the Latinos speaking in Tuesday's Republican National Convention programming are Rep. Francisco Canseco, R-Texas. Sher Valenzuela, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Delaware, Republican Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Texas GOP Senate nominee Ted Cruz.

But, other staunch opponents of illegal immigration -- like Iowa Rep. Steve King, who's speaking as well on Tuesday -- will also be among the featured voices in the day's program.

"I don't think it's going to do much for him, frankly," Villaraigosa said of the GOP's overall message.

The Los Angeles mayor predicted that President Barack Obama would win "close to 70 percent" of the Latino vote in his re-election effort; Romney advisers have set a goal in the upper-30th percentile in targeting Hispanic voters.

Latino voters are of particular importance in swing states like Colorado, Florida and Virginia -- a sign of shifting demographics that Republicans have worried would put them at a long-term political disadvantage unless they were to become more welcoming of Latinos.

Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said in response to today's Democratic bracketing event: "Today, as we learn that more than a quarter of Democrats believe President Obama does not have a clear plan for creating jobs, his surrogates in Tampa continued to launch false and baseless attacks against Governor Romney.  The facts speak for themselves – with 23 million Americans struggling for work, nearly one in six Americans living in poverty, and median incomes declining, the Obama campaign cannot defend a record of broken promises and failed policies.  Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a plan to strengthen the middle class by creating jobs and turning around our economy."

I think this is a lie. Maybe white voters go for substance but any other race here in America votes along color lines for sure. Look at Obama. The only reason he was elected is that it was the first time all the coloured folks had a chance to take a shot at whitey. There I said it it. The Emperor has no clothes.

Plus this is what I expect from a Racist hater from Los Angeles. This is what happens when the voters elect somebody because of their skin color. L,A, is going down with the Latino leadership. All you have to do is look at Mexico to see how well they can lead. Ceasar Chavez was a good leader because he lead with his heart and not his hate. But I cannot recall any other Latino leaders who do not have the race hate card in their bag of tricks.

Mayor
Villaraigosa is an embarrassment to LA as a leader. He's done nothing for the
City of LA. Both he and Obama are great at fanning the blaze of racism.

Both
these idiots love the uneducated and undocumented individuals to dominate the
country for votes. That's why Southern
California has become the worst place in the country to live. The "so called"
cheap labor have entitlement problems, exploit the system, and are on welfare
(yet collecting cash under the table)! Most are litigious as well and
sue for everything. Welcome to the new America--look at the average face in LA
and you’re seeing the “new America”!

....the mayor is just angry that the white people who paid all of LA's bills are moving out in droves and there will be no one left to pay for all the leeches on the LA dole......LA will soon look like Detroit and the illegals who are left there can wallow in their unemployment and poverty.....

California has the eighth largest economy in the world. Larger than almost every other nation on Earth. LA, by far, is the biggest city in the state, so your paranoid delusions don't make much sense.

More racist crap from Democrats, and yet they will call the Republicans the "racists".

Why is it so important to "trot out a brown face" anyway?

Isn't this the country of EQUALITY where the color of your skin makes no difference? Oh wait, to the left color is EVERYTHING!

For almost four years we've had to hear how Obama is black and anyone that doesn't agree with him is automatically a "racist". It doesn't matter that Obama is NOTHING more than just another left wing, tax, regulate, borrow, and spend spend spend FAILURE. Nope, it's all about his "color" or his "race" to the left.

And now we've got a "headline" from the Mayor of Los Angeles talking about how Republicans can't just "trot out a brown face", like that actually makes a difference in absolutely ANYTHING.

How about the Mayor worries a little bit more about his OWN business before he starts squalling some racist crap about Republicans? Los Angeles is another city on the brink of bankruptcy. Hundreds of thousands of peole in his city are on welfare. Los Angeles is another Democrat DOMINATED city that can't keep their budget straight, the politicians are overpaid, the unions are cleaning up with high salaries, massive pension plans, and Cadillac health care policies, and the taxpayers have to pick up the tab for it all.

He's made sure he has a "sanctuary" city, breaking Federal law and not caring. Hundreds of thousands of illegals are draining the city, county, and state dry while the city, county, and state are going bankrupt. And all this MORON can do is talk about Republicans?

If any of you "genius" elitists would pay attention, EVERYWHERE that Republicans have taken charge of the government in cities, counties, and states all over the nation, unemployment is DOWN, the deficit spending is DOWN, the debt is DOWN, and Democrats are now attempting to take credit for it all.

Antonio Villaraigosa needs to just shut up until he can show IMPROVEMENT in Los Angeles, which will NEVER happen as long as he and Democrat RACISTS just like him are in charge.

    Unbelievable!

NBC can't stop the negative articles for even a couple of days, during the Republican Convention.

Way to go NBC, always a jump ahead, when it comes to showing your true colors!

....and you wonder why your numbers keep plummeting.

From Matt Lauer, to doorknob Chuck the Schmuck Todd, to Andrea Mitchell, to evening news, Brian Williams, they're all in the bag and comparable to Shawn Hannity, on the other side. The only difference is, Hannity is just a talk and squawk show, not the so called "elite" media.

Why in the hell would the Republicans want NBC televising the Convention?

Why in the hell would the Republicans want NBC televising the Convention?

Because they are losing and they need all the coverage they can get, when they trot out Hispanic republicans to attempt to gain more than 25% support from that demographic. That is what this is about.

Mitt Romney speaks proudly when he tells Fortune 500 companies that moving jobs to China, India, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Europe, South America, and Mexico is acceptable, because profits trump commitment to cities and towns that have suffered due to outsourcing of American Middle Class Jobs. When you are wealthy and know the best offshore banks for your personal "tax free income growth" why would you want a job that only pays $400,000 a year? I am guessing that Mitt views his reduction from $20 Million a year in 2011, to $400,000 if elected POTUS, as his form of "slumming with the poor folks".

Could you point out the speech, or even the date that Romney made a speech where he "speaks proudly" about moving jobs to China?

If you would PAY ATTENTION Terry, NO jobs were outsourced by Romney. If a company that Bain INVESTED in moved jobs, that's their call, not Bain's. All Bain has done is INVEST in companies so that they could be successful. It's up to the company itself to do what THEY can to either survive or die, not on Bain, or even Romney.

The filth thrown out by people like you is unbelievable.

Think about it "genius"!! The man could make somewhere between 20 and 100 MILLION dollars, in just ONE year, just by not being President. That's how BRILLIANT he is as a businessman.

He actually CARES enough about this nation to give that up to attempt to WORK on getting us out of debt, to a balanced budget, and to cut the wasteful, MASSIVE, spending by the Federal Government.

And all you can do is throw out garbage, like the true "progessive" that you are. You'd rather have a President that brags about boozing, smoking dope, and snorting coke in high school and gets HANDED entrance to elite colleges. You'd rather have a President that allows over one million ILLEGALS steal jobs from the CITIZENS of this nation. You'd rather have a President that tells people not only that they WILL buy health insurance, but actually tells you what kind of health insurance you WILL buy. You'd rather have a President that doesn't CARE at all about record, debt, deficits, regulations, borrowing, or spending. You'd rather have a President that makes sure UNIONS get Billions of dollars, and the non-union middle class gets NOTHING!

    Really "intelligent".

I will ask a basic question. Why is that Republicans say that if you cut taxes on the job creators they will hire more people. However AT&T and EXXON paid zero taxes last year and both made billions in profit but neither company hired any new people. If you know anything about business your biggest expense in busy is salaries. Oh by the way if the Republicans are so for the middle class then why do they want to get rid of the minimum wage then people would make even less. Makes sense to me.

      #33.3 - Tue Aug 28, 2012 5:29 PM EDT

The minimum wage has eliminated millions of entry-level jobs. Any employee must add enough to the business's bottom line to pay for that employee. New employees at $7.25/hr often do not pay their way until they've learned their jobs. So the employer knows that they will lose money on that employee for months until they finally get good enough at their job to pull their weight. Many employers cannot afford to lose money for months, so the job goes unfilled or goes under the table for less than minimum wage. We could raise minimum wage to $8.50/hr if a "trainee" period of no more than six months allowed a wage of $5/hr. But Democrats won't go for that. They have done everything they can to eliminate exceptions to the minimum wage laws. The result is fewer jobs for entry-level American workers to get their toe in the door of the working world. Those jobs sometimes get filled by day laborers paid under the table, usually illegal aliens. So the Democrats' insistence on the minimum wage has created a place for illegal aliens and leaves American school kids with no entry level jobs.

        #33.4 - Wed Aug 29, 2012 2:18 AM EDT

Trent, don't forget that when the Minimum Wage was first presented in the 1800's it was a means to keep the Non-WASP immigrants from Celtic, Germanic, and Slavic nations down and on the government dole. If you look at the rhetoric from the Democrats at the time, it was intended to be exclusionary. The point we are making against the Minimum Wage is the exact same one the Democrats used to pass the Minimum Wage. Ironic that they won't live up to it, but then most Dems support the labor theory of value instead of the price theory of value when it comes to economics. And don't even get me started on the number of Democrat politicians who think the Broken Window Theory is a legitimate line of economic thought.

He has single handedly destroyed Los Angeles and now he has ambitions to destroy this country on a national level. He is hardly qualified to comment on brown Republicans. If you don't espouse giving all benefits and rights to illegal Mexicans then I guess you are not the right shade of brown. Sadly too many hispanic politicans of the Democratic party only care for hispanics and do not care for anyone else.

I would love to vote for Romney and teach these 3rd world Democrats a lesson, but honestly Paul Ryan scares me more than any other person. His arrogance is so transparent. The cure to racism is not to ignore the color of the skin and to pretend that multiple colors don't exist. It's to directly address and remediate the prejudicial issues associated with discrimination based on color. You can't do that without being able to point out what the issues are and who they affect.

Pointing the finger at each other and screaming "racist" everytime someone says "brown" or "black" doesn't resolve the issues. It's a fact that we still live in a country where color does matter and racism does happen.

Yep, and Democrats ENSURE that racism continues. By screaming "racism" at anyone and EVERYONE that doesn't agree with their agenda. By having racist commentators throw out their filth. By having race baiters have the stage at every opportunity. By claiming that any conservative is automatically a "racist", and any non-white conservative is a "turn coat", "oreo", "Uncle Tom", and any other vile filth they can throw out.

I was raised in the projects of East Nashville. The MOST non-racist people I've ever seen were the people that wanted OUT of the projects and to live the American Dream. It didn't matter to them about "color". It mattered about HARD WORK, sacrifice, and doing whatever it took to get out. They didn't scream "racism" when they didn't get a job they wanted, or get the raise they wanted. They WORKED harder, got EDUCATED, and kept on going without ever, EVER, screaming race.

Meanwhile, our friends that CHOSE to remain in poverty screamed racism at every opportunity. Every time their "entitlement" didn't go up. Every time they didn't get a job. Every time they failed in school. Every time they dropped out and did absolutely NOTHING for themselves. They CHOSE to quit and scream that it was "white men" that kept them in poverty. They CHOSE to listen to Democrats that run the projects that told them if they voted for that "racist Republican" they would lose their "entitlements". They CHOSE to be the failures they are and blame it on "racism".

It's my belief that members of both parties are responsible for a lot of the racial divide issues and that these issues have been used for political power and positioning. It's also hard to overcome decades of impacts from "urban renewal", Jim Crow laws, red-lining, government public housing policies, the loss of the urban CBDs, lack of access to transportation, etc. especially when the continued suppression of people is still happening.

There is no solution as long as people's attitudes continue to separate groups into "us" and "them" in stead of saying "all of us." (Note - kind of funny how a discussion on bipartisanship could parallel this thought process.)

I think you are mistaking a distaste for criminals for a distaste for immigrants. The GOP understands to its very core that this is a nation of immigrants; its how the immigrant arrives that we care about. When my great-grandparents arrived in this country, they knocked on the front door and requested permission to enter. Many of them came ashore on the Island of Tears and had to watch friends and neighbors (or even acquaintances they made on the Steamer across the pond) be told no and sent home. All of them came with little or nothing to their name expect a hope and a prayer for a better life. But, they knocked on the front door and announced themselves.

Illegal immigrants do not. They sneak across the border and then live and work in the shadows in modern day slavery. Women who cross the border are raped after the coyote who is guiding them across decapitates one of them and threatens to do the same to the rest. Others are left to die in the heat of the desert by people who do not care about them. Now, I am not advocating we shoot anyone trying to sneak across our southern border like Mexico does to illegal immigrants from Guatemala and points south, but I am asking that we at least know who is coming into our country. The vast majority of them are just people looking for a better life, but they will not find it in the US so long as the situation remains the way it is.

Ol' Tony didn't think Villar sounded Mexican enough to he combined that name with the surname of his former wife, Raigosa, and came up with Villaraigosa. A few years back his wife divorced his slimy butt because he got caught diddling some tart who worked at an L.A. Spanish language station.

Secondly, your voter fraud paranoia reeks of Faux Noise and Rush Limbaugh. Get a life dude.

Excellent statement Mayor and the Dem Party should get all the non-white leaders like him lined up to rebutt every BS statement by the GOP on this subject of their being so interested in integration. In fact, outside of Rice and Powell, who else that is non-white in the GOP has had any opportunity to be in their leadership? Just like Mitt, he doesn't have any close associates or advisors that are non-white does he? They may want non-whites to join the GOP but you can bet just like they treat all women, the old white males will never give up or share much power in their world.

Interesting off-topic thought! Amazing how the Racist Republicans are opposed to abortion and the Non-Racist Democrats fight tooth and nail for it when it is minorities that make a up such a great proportion of those aborted!?

Don't forget, Margaret Sanger started Planned Parenthood to abort the Blacks, Jews, Catholics, and other "Undesirables" out of the country. She even spoke at a number of Klan rallies about her plans to kill non-WASP's in the womb. The war on black babies by the left is no surprise or accident.

Feel most Americans already know where their vote is going. Football haves a priority over politics, so many will ignore the rest of political statements.

Good luck all on your vote in Nov.

I'm waiting to hear from the Log Cabin Republicans....their target isn't a minority in the Republican voter base now is it. Good old fashioned Christian family values there for ya fellers :)

                          The Los Angeles mayor predicted that President Barack Obama would win "close to 70 percent" of the Latino vote in his re-election effort;

Polls say more than 90% of blacks will be voting for President Obama.

Hmmm...... 70% of Hispanics and 90% of blacks.

Perhaps the white population should stop voting their beliefs, and vote based on the race of the candidate. Oh, that would be racism!

In the words of the great Hank Aaron - "if you want racism to go away, stop talking about it!" You cannot turn MSNBC on in the evening without hearing Chris Matthews or the fat boy bringing up race. The day Romney chose Paul Ryan as a running mate what does Matthews say? "This is the first time I can remember no protestant being on a ticket." He is such a joke! I used to like Chris until he got the "tickle up his leg!" LOL OMG! What scum!! when Herman Cain was told 0% of blacks are voting for Romeny - he said "i"m not part of the 0%. Listen to Artur Davis and some of the other educated blacks who don't want handouts and don't want to blame someone else for their problems - you might learn something.

Obama has done pretty darn well. And the ONLY reason Obama has not done even better is the GOP House that flatly wants the United States to fail because they think that will help them defeat him. They have consistently even cut off their own nose, and our hopes, in order to spite him. Every single jobs bill, even if it came from a Republican-every single one!-they shout down out of fear it will help him. F them all.

There's a reason the polls show that 0% of blacks support Mitt (R-Romney), but the GOP just can't figure out why that is........or why very few women, gays or Latinos will be voting Republican.

And tell us all that "reason" skrekk.

If "0%" of blacks support Romney, then that by itself shows racism. (And by the way, since there are a whole lot of CONSERVATIVE blacks that actually do support Romney, your "0%" is just the usual "progressive" lie.

And it's not "very few women, gays, or Latinos" that will be voting Republican.

MILLIONS of women that aren't sitting on their butts whining about getting "free" contraceptive care will be voting for Romney.

MILLIONS of Latino CITIZENS that are sick of paying high taxes, seeing jobs go to ILLEGALS that they should have, and actually WANT to live the American Dream instead having the government ruling them from birth to death will vote for Romney.

As for gays, the are many that actually ARE conservative and actually WILL vote for Romney. Just because they disagree with Romney about ONE thing doesn't mean that they will vote for a FAILURE like Obama.

90% of blacks voted for Gore, so clearly black support for Dems isn't based on race but on the ideology of the party which supports labor rights and civil rights. That a statistical 0% of blacks support Mitt (R-Money) today isn't at all surprising, given how utterly clueless he is and how he's been engaging in race-baiting. Here's the poll:

                                  http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Sections/A_Politics/_Today_Stories_Teases/August_NBC-WSJ_Int_Sched.pdf

This next link shows the extreme right-wing ideological shift the GOP has taken over the years, and goes a long way to explain why so very few women, elderly, blacks, gays or Latinos will be voting Republican:

                                  http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/gop-platform-through-the-years-shows-partys-shift-from-moderate-to-conservative/2012/08/28/09094512-ed70-11e1-b09d-07d971dee30a_story.html

The word "abortion" does not appear in a Republican Party platform until 1976, when the party concedes it is deeply split between those who support "abortion on demand" and those who seek to protect the lives of the unborn.

The quest for lower taxes does not define Republicanism until the 1980s, and matters of faith play almost no role in the party's platform until the 1990s.

The Republican Party, viewed through its quadrennial platform documents, is consistently business-oriented and committed to a strong defense, but has morphed over the past half-century from a socially moderate, environmentally progressive and fiscally cautious perspective to a conservative party that is suspicious of government, allied against abortion and driven by faith. [..]

Many positions Republicans often tout as traditionally conservative are actually relatively new to GOP ideology. Indeed, although the party's stance on the issues has shifted rightward in the past 20 years, Republicans have studiously avoided using the word "conservative" in platforms.

For decades, the party presented itself as "moderate" or even "progressive." The 1960 platform, for example, touts "progressive Republican policies" such as "liberal pay" and urges that government "must be truly progressive as an employer."

In 1972, the platform celebrates Republicans' use of wage and price controls to curb inflation, a doubling of federal spending on manpower training and a tripling of help to minorities.

It's no surprise at all that the GOP is rapidly becoming just a southern regional party, with little national support. And no surprise that there's a huge gender gap. What woman in her right mind would vote for a party which wants to control her uterus?
