Updated, 1:30 p.m. - TAMPA, Fla. -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that Republicans "can't just trot out a brown face" to make inroads with the Latino community, an increasingly important growing bloc.
As the GOP prepares to showcase some of its rising Hispanic stars during the next two days of its national convention, the Democratic mayor dismissed Republican overtures toward Latinos as insincere.
"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," Villaraigosa said at a press conference here organized by the Democratic National Committee.
Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., joins The Daily Rundown to talk about the convention and diversity in the GOP.
"People are going to vote just like Anglos do, just like African-Americans do, and virtually every demographic group. They vote for people based on what they say, what they've done, and what they're going to do," he later added.
Among the Latinos speaking in Tuesday's Republican National Convention programming are Rep. Francisco Canseco, R-Texas. Sher Valenzuela, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Delaware, Republican Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Texas GOP Senate nominee Ted Cruz.
But, other staunch opponents of illegal immigration -- like Iowa Rep. Steve King, who's speaking as well on Tuesday -- will also be among the featured voices in the day's program.
"I don't think it's going to do much for him, frankly," Villaraigosa said of the GOP's overall message.
The Los Angeles mayor predicted that President Barack Obama would win "close to 70 percent" of the Latino vote in his re-election effort; Romney advisers have set a goal in the upper-30th percentile in targeting Hispanic voters.
Latino voters are of particular importance in swing states like Colorado, Florida and Virginia -- a sign of shifting demographics that Republicans have worried would put them at a long-term political disadvantage unless they were to become more welcoming of Latinos.
Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said in response to today's Democratic bracketing event: "Today, as we learn that more than a quarter of Democrats believe President Obama does not have a clear plan for creating jobs, his surrogates in Tampa continued to launch false and baseless attacks against Governor Romney. The facts speak for themselves – with 23 million Americans struggling for work, nearly one in six Americans living in poverty, and median incomes declining, the Obama campaign cannot defend a record of broken promises and failed policies. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a plan to strengthen the middle class by creating jobs and turning around our economy."

I would like to point out that his comment wasn’t racist at all when he states that people of color vote based on issues... but due to the inverted cranium of those on the right it would appear that such dialog would appear to be futile.
Guess when the right brought out Ryan they weren't catering to the extremist Right teabaggers or with Sister Sarah they weren’t catering to the Hilary voters or when they elected Michael Steele as RNC Chair they weren’t catering to the African American vote, or Huckabee catering to the evangelical voters…. Seems to me that the right feels that by marching someone out to cater to a specific demographic should be good enough to get their votes….too bad for Republicans that these demographics care about the issues first!!!

For example………..Romney is overwhelming preferred by married women with decent family values who either have jobs, or are married to men who do. Single mothers and unemployed/poor women on the other hand overwhelmingly prefer Obama since they're much less likely to be self-sufficient. One group wants to have money to pay for their birth control, the other wants it handed to them for free. Unfortunately the latter group is growing more quickly.

Obama knows that he can't run on his experience, so basically his campaign is limited to trying to dominate a select group of demographics like those listed above. He's basically resorted to scare tactics in which he tries to convince women and minorities that Republicans hate them and want to take away their welfare……………….nice. But with the majority of the country in significantly worse shape compared with 4 years ago, what choice does he have? He certainly can't tout a recovering economy, or a new health care system that will cause millions of Americans to lose their coverage.
The bottom line is that in November, people on both sides of the aisle need to look past the banter and think long and hard about which candidate has their best interests at heart. To anyone that has or wants a private sector job, that would be Romney.

As someone who respects certain political stances on both sides I always find it interesting to see which topics the average voter will base their decisions on. Take me for examples; I identify myself as a conservative, but I'm pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-science (evolution), atheist, college educated, etc. So why do I vote Republican? Because I'm a hetero-sexual white male who earns enough annually to be in the top income tax bracket. As much as I hate it when Republicans make issues out of abortion or gay rights, I know that neither of those issues will affect me directly.
Conversely, I know people who are just the opposite. My brother in law is blue/collar, working class individual that essentially lives pay-check to pay-check and relies on financial help from my wife and me from time to time. You would think he would support liberals, but he chooses to support Republicans because for some reason gay rights seem to be the most important issue in the world to him. I know some Democrats that do the same thing. Perhaps the time has come to abandon the two-party system because it seems that very few people are satisfied with what they're getting.

Please make sure that the Republicans do not take away your right to vote this November. In many states, your military ID and your student ID are no longer valid for voting purposes. If you live in Florida and have a Spanish name, you might have already been purged from the voting list. I'm confused as to why you are accusing Republicans of being racist.
When exactly have Republicans specifically brought up policies meant to treat various races differently or unfairly? What proof do you have to say that Romney or Ryan would treat members of different races in different fashions?
Of course, you will bring up the immigration issue. But immigration policy applies to all (illegal) immigrants. It doesn't treat an illegal immigrant from Canada any different than one from Cuba. The fact that most illegal immigrants seem to come from Latino countries is irrelevant (otherwise, you'd essentially be saying that because most illegal immigrants come from one country, we can't do anything about it. Makes no sense!). I'm not commenting on the immigration issue btw. Maybe it's factually incorrect to blame a portion of our country's ills on immigration policy. But that doesn't make someone a racist.

California has been in fiscal mess for years because it has required a two thirds majority vote to pass a budget. That is harder to get than a cloture vote in the US Senate.
One thing I do not understand is why the Democrat citizenry allows their party leaders to promote amnesty for illegals along with no real effort to close our borders.
Most of us - Democrats and Republicans alike are descendants of families from many European countries who came here legally within our system. They had to prove to the United States that they had an education or skill that would allow them to find gainful employment or make an independant living and "would not be a burden to the state"

Didn't he write that the Mexico - US border should be "something other than a place for a fence" (writings from his meeting with President Jose Lopez Portillo of Mexico in 1979)? Lets see Romney invested in Staples when it was one store and eleven employees. Now its 2,000 stores and 6,000+ employees. Besides give taxpayers money to lazy Government workers whats Obama's plan?
First off I use to work for Staples and Sports Authority two of the companies that Bain took over and the reason they have more employees is because they have more stores. When Bain took over the Sports Authority in Gaithersburg Md the number of staff went from 45 to 28 the reason was they said that employees should be able to sell everything in the store. Well if someone is selling me fitness equipment I want them to know what the hell they are talking about, and as far as Staples alot of those stores have closed down.
