ABOARD THE ROMNEY CAMPAIGN PLANE -- Only hours before delivering her speech to a national audience, Ann Romney is ready to go (but her outfit is not).
While passing out home-baked Welsh cakes, her specialty, to the secret service and press corps, the former first lady of Massachusetts expressed confidence in the team that helped write her speech, and a bit of dismay that those same strategists would be also be helping to select her wardrobe.
“We’re having a great time. I’m excited about it,” Mrs. Romney said of the speech. “And the funniest thing of all is that Stuart Stevens, who wears his shirts inside-out, is advising me on what dress I should wear tonight. So I know I’ve come really full-circle now.”
At the Republican National Convention the wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was preparing to give a "heartfelt" speech, that may improve her husband's appeal. NBC's Peter Alexander reports from Tampa, Fla.
“It was going to be like my wedding night -- I wasn’t going to let him know what I was going to wear. But now they have opinions,” Mrs. Romney said of her husband and his staff.
Mrs. Romney, who usually delivers her brief stump speech off the cuff, and almost never uses a teleprompter, said preparing for her speech with a teleprompter was “hard,” and said the ongoing process of refining the speech was exciting, if challenging.
“You know, I think you will see that my speech is heartfelt, and I think a lot of you have been covering me long enough and you know I've never gone off a written text. So this is a unique experience for me,” Romney said.
A reporter asked Romney what she hoped viewers at home would think as they watched the speech on television.
“How important this election’s going to be and how important it’s going to be for them to consider the right things to make their right decisions,” Mrs. Romney said, wrapping up the Q & A session.
“I think that’s it, guys. I’m just going to pass out the Welsh cakes now.”

Employers took 1,340 mass layoff actions in July involving 137,420 workers, seasonally adjusted, as
measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits during the month, the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics reported today. Each mass layoff involved at least 50 workers from a single employer.
Mass layoff events in July increased by 23 from June, and the number of associated initial claims
increased by 6,014. Year-to-date mass layoff events (9,425) and initial claims (905,310) both recorded
their lowest figures for a January-July period since 2007. In July, 364 mass layoff events were reported
in the manufacturing sector, seasonally adjusted, resulting in 44,920 initial claims. Mass layoff data are
identified using administrative data sources without regard to layoff duration.

I don't know if the cookies were her idea or from someone in the campaign, but it seems to me to be a bit over the top.
IMO, once a person injects themselves into a campaign, they become fair game. I don't like personal attacks about a persons physical appearance. However, if in their words or actions they invite a response, that is fair play.
Children under the age of 21 who are not actively participating in the campaign of their own choice or relatives not directly involved should not be attacked.

I have this to say about the unemployment situation. Anyone who has commented about this recession has called it "The Great Recession." The recovery, such as it is, has only been to the GDP and the profits of companies.
What amazes me is that the brain dead Republicans complain that the government does not create jobs, yet at the same time attempt to blame President Obama for a lack of recovery of jobs. Simultaneously, they have no jobs bills pass through Congress.
Bills removing funding from Planned Parenthood, outlawing contraception, outlawing abortion, and/or eliminating the Affordable Care Act are not jobs bills. At best they are political grand standing, at worst attempts to control women and destroy the United States.

The deduction of the horse is not incredibly complicated---it is under a provision of the Code that allows for the deduction of business losses. The problem is that Mitt has told us the horse is a therapy horse for Ann. And the horse competed in the Olympics. So which is it---a hobby, a medical expense or a business? Seems to me it is whatever Mitt wants it to be on the particular day he is talking about it. As a taxpayer, I'm not particularly interested in subsidizing the Romney's expensive hobby.
Steeler - yes, Mitts will release his 2011 returns on 10/15/2012. Let's see, that's less than 30 days before the election. But Bob doesn't have a problem with not vetting Mitts - see he's a Republican so he can cheat, lie, etc., Bob doesn't care.

I think it's interesting that the campaign decided they needed to choose Anne Romney's wardrobe. Of course Sarah Palin didn't choose her outfits, but I'm pretty sure Cindy McCain did. Hopefully they won't go overboard on a 'conservative' look for a woman that throws on a $1000 t-shirt for a casual interview.

ksw---I agree that Michelle Obama has also worn designer clothes---I don't blame her since she can afford them. I have liked how she has showcased young American designers, such as in her outfits for state dinners. And when she is shown wearing an outfit from Target or Talbots they usually sell out with people trying to get them. But I can also believe that Michelle Obama shopped off the rack when she was starting out her career and as a young mother. I don't believe Ann Romney when she says how she loves to shop at Costco. And the baking cookies thing is just too back to the 1950s for me.
Steeler you know if she was a Democrat you would be saying differently. I just think if you are going to judge you should do it fairly and who doesn't love cookies. I have always had a career but I don't denigrate other women's choices for being stay at home mothers if they can afford it.

Several very well dressed but not over the top first ladies are still around. If she doesn't know what to do by now, Ann Romney can always call on Barbara Bush, Laura Bush, Rosalyn Carter, though I would avoid Nancy Reagan who had expensive taste.

The average American family is so pressed for time and worried about spending that grocery shopping is not a "fun" excursion. It is a chore to be squeezed in between many other errands, activities with the kids, helping with older parents, working one or two jobs, etc. Ann just doesn't get how average people live.

As an international with the privilege of residency I apologize for the inability of your critics to understand the complexity of being "woman". Whilst its fair to say that Mrs Clinton has been by far my favourite first lady, politician and one of those wonderful women of the world to look up to it would be unfair and unjust to judge you against her.
For me I see you taking a different path in life with the devotion of family and home. I read some of the surly comments here and could not help but wonder if these people in this blog are more animal than human. If we judged them based on their comments we would believe them capable of eating their own flesh and blood alive. (Americans appear to not love each other terribly well)
As a mother of three and a balancing career woman I have trodden a different path to yourself. However, I understand that it is quite a task to raise children and you did so with five. As well, those who know what is involved to raise a successful family, know what great sacrifices you have made and consider that one attribute a great strength of loyalty and dedication. Always remember, it is the choices that are too part of the democracy. Woman still have choices and that is what is important in the grand scheme of things - too many have paved the way for this freedom to be diminished in any way by defaming the traditional role that some woman choose to take as their life path.
