GOP elders describe high stakes for Romney in Tampa

On Meet the Press, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush says the Republican Party needs to try and stay focused on the economy instead of

TAMPA, Fla. – Republican elders said Sunday that this week’s Republican National Convention here in Florida offered Mitt Romney an opportunity to re-introduce himself to voters heading into the height of the fall campaign season.

As GOP heavyweights gather in Florida for a hurricane-shortened convention, some of the party’s most influential voices laid out on “Meet the Press” the stakes for Romney.

The convention offered Romney a chance “to reconnect with people,” said former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) of the forthcoming convention.

Convention organizers canceled Monday’s activities due to safety concerns associated with an impending hurricane, leaving Romney and the GOP with one less day to drive its message about what they charge are the failures of President Barack Obama, particularly when it comes to matters of the economy.

NBC News Political Director, Chuck Todd, DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Republican Governor from Arizona, Jan Brewer, and Republican Strategist Mike Murphy discuss what changes in the polls could occur following the Republican National Convention.

But Republicans also acknowledged that Romney must use this national platform to reverse some of the damage done to his personal reputation over the summer. The Obama campaign and Democratic super PACs have spent tens of millions of dollars on television ads in key swing states taking aim at Romney’s private sector career, personal wealth and handling of issues important to women.

Exacerbating problems for the Republican brand has been this past week’s uproar over Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin’s (R) comments about “legitimate rape.” Republicans have sharply distanced themselves from the conservative congressman’s remarks, while Democrats have sought to link those sentiments with Romney and the Republican Party as a whole.

“I'm surprised that we, the Romney-Ryan ticket, are neck and neck in the polls right now particularly with some of the setbacks we have experienced,” said Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP’s 2008 presidential nominee.

Convention organizers have laid out a daily theme here in Tampa meant to soften Romney’s public image and offer greater insight into his family and charitable work, among other personal details. The convention also revolves heavily around leveling an indictment of Obama’s economic policy during the last four years.

It’s a high-stakes act for Romney; the conventions are regarded as one of the few opportunities to sway undecided voters, whose numbers are dwindling in this especially competitive election.

“This is the big Etch A Sketch moment for Mitt Romney,” Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, said Sunday of the impending Republican festivities.

On Meet the Press, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., talks about his experience four years ago dealing with severe weather in the midst of the Republican National Convention.

But there are also long-term stakes for Republicans this week in Tampa, particularly as it relates to closing the gap among women and Hispanic voters, with whom Obama enjoys a healthy advantage over Romney in the polls.

“My personal view is that we need to move beyond where we are,” Bush said of the current Republican rhetoric on immigration. He said that, on immigration, Republicans must change “not necessarily the core of our beliefs but the tone of our message and the intensity of it.”

But Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), the chief proponent of a tough immigration law in her home state, said Republicans must emphasize “the rule of law.”

From Florida, David Gregory reports on Romney's likeability challenge; Andrea Mitchell reports on Republicans trying to push Akin from the race; and Chuck Todd notes that Romney faces another storm, this one named Isaac.

She added: “Certainly those kinds of issues are going to have to be discussed moving on into the future.”

But Republicans overall stressed the primacy of the economy this election cycle, the issue on which Romney has an advantage over Obama in most polls.

“I think Mitt wins when it's about these big things,” Bush said. “When it's about the constant distractions, it'll be a very, very close race.”

Feisty, don't put too much credence in your polls right now. They aren't completely above board and are designed to influence the outcome of the election. As we get closer they will become more accurate. I have a very good feeling about Romney/Ryan's chances in November.

August 26, 2012 Charlie Crist endorsed President Obama.

Charlie Crist: I’ve studied, admired and gotten to know a lot of leaders in my life. Across Florida, in Washington and around the country, I've watched the failure of those who favor extreme rhetoric over sensible compromise, and I've seen how those who never lose sight of solutions sow the greatest successes.

As America prepares to pick our president for the next four years — and as Florida prepares once again to play a decisive role — I'm confident that President Barack Obama is the right leader for our state and the nation. I applaud and share his vision of a future built by a strong and confident middle class in an economy that gives us the opportunity to reap prosperity through hard work and personal responsibility. It is a vision of the future proven right by our history.

Paragraph 8 And the president invested in our retirement security by strengthening Medicare. The $716 billion in savings his opponents decry today extended the life of the program by nearly a decade and are making sure taxpayer dollars aren't wasted in excessive payments to insurance companies or fraud and abuse. His opponents would end the Medicare guarantee by creating a voucher that would raise seniors' costs by thousands of dollars and bankrupt the program. More …

And still he and Obama are deadlocked in the polls and with the GOP convention right around the corner. You better hope he doesn't cut into BO's margins in these areas or Obama is toast.

He does that every time that he opens his mouth. He has a different position on EVERYTHING, according to whom is organizing his fund raising. He promised that he would never bring the "birther" BS about President Obama, but he flip-flopped the minute that Donald Trump -the most insecure birther with an expplosive ego- did a fundraising for him.

Of course, Mittens is there to SERVE THE BIGGEST DONORS, not the American People. Look at his sorry Convention: paid by lobbyists, and he says that has a pavillion to attract women. The name of the pavillion: Miriam Adelson, the wife of the super pac champion Adelson. Mitt Romney expects women to see "how much he cares abou them" by having this pavillion there. Ridiculous? YES! Also, they have prepared a ceremony honorig the KOCH BROTHERS.

This is Convention to honor BIG MONEY, NOT THE PEOPLE.

FEISTY You are so full of S#*T your eyes are turning brown and the smell of lies are horrible.

The black voters are more and more going over to Romney as they see Obama for what he is. A LIAR. He has done more to set back the advancement of his own people than any other leader before him.

Yes Obama has more hispanics saying they will vote for him. But most of those are illegals and will be heavily watched as it is against Federal laws for them to vote. The rest of the Hispanic population hate Obama .

The women vote is pretty much split 50-50.

The Elderly vote is pretty much going for Romney as the scare tactics by the Democrats just can't over come the facts

Most of the Military is against Obama as they realize he is a p#*s poor comamder and chief, as does the military vets across the country feel the same way about him.

And Finally allot of registered Democrats are voting against him as well the Democrats in Congress because they know that Obama care is filled with lies and heaped to the brim with more taxes that will hurt the poor and middle class.

And "tonybeerm How about Obama un sealing all the college records he has spent millions to seal up so the public cant see them . What is he hiding from us. Could it be that he don't want the people to see just how dishonnest he is.Or could it be that it will show proof the he gamed the system for his benefit.

What your life would be like under Romney if you're middle-class.

1. Your taxes would go up - there is no scenario where the tax cuts for the wealthy would not be funded by the middle-class. Look it up.

2. Your health insurance will go up. Romney will repeal ACA. .

3. If you are a woman or have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, are over weight - you will lose your health insurance if you get sick. There will be no protection against losing your insurance because of pre-existing conditions. Romney will repeal ACA - there will be no protections.

4. You will lose Social Security benefits.

5. You will lose Medicare Benefits - it will go bankrupt by 2016.

6. If you are a woman, you will no longer have reproductive rights. If you get pregnant, you will be forced to bear that child or face murder charges.

Think these are far fetched? Read their platform and make up your own mind.

By the way - Where are your tax Returns Romney? What are you hiding? Did you take the 2009 tax evasion pardon?

Here in Colorado our local news keeps telling us of a 4% advantage for the President, with just a few percent left undecided. Here we have enjoyed a very strong economy for almost all of the last 25 years under Democrat control of both State and local Denver-area government, and in 25 years the Denver region has seen population growth of over 250%. The Great Recession was not nearly as bad here as it has been in other places, and our home prices are back up around 15% since 2009 too. Here we have enjoyed some recovery anyway, and I see no good reason here to upend the recovery that we have enjoyed to this point, and return to a tax-cutting platform which has already saddled America with nearly $11 trillion in national debt just between Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr, and Bush Jr, plus another $2.5 trillion in inter-governmental borrowing from Social Security.

One definition of insanity is doing the same negative thing over and ever again and expecting different results, and Romney's economic platform is just a rehash of Republican economic plans since Reagan was in office. Cut taxes on our wealthiest citizens and they will spend much of their extra dough on foreign investments, expensive foreign cars, foreign vacations, foreign real estate, and foreign yachts, and only a minority percentage of that extra income will trickle-down here at home.

If cutting taxes on our wealthiest citizens actually "created" jobs, America should be awash in good-paying and secure middle-class jobs right now, as our top tax rate is half of what it was from 1960-1980 when our economy was as strong as it has ever been. Instead we are faced with a terrible loss of middle-income jobs, dilapidated roads and bridges, the loss of entire industries, the economic destruction of entire cities and regions, and under Republican control, the loss of many trillions of dollars of middle-class home and retirement account values, while a lucky few wealthy Americans have tripled their net worth at the same time. Has any of that record increase in net worth trickled-down to you? So why think that if we elect Romney that he and his friends will allow any of their table scraps to fall down to you?

I have noticed that the hurricane track has shifted eastward a couple of times in the last couple of days, as first the bulls-eye was on Mobile, AL. All that we can hope is that the storm track continues to shift eastward until the entire RNC convention becomes a wash too. It would be insane for any member of the bottom 80% in America to think that electing someone who specializes in stripping corporate assets and offshoring jobs would somehow be good for America, as the most-likely outcome based on history is another huge increase in our national debt, along with another major war, and while our defense contractors will do well, our civilian economy will do much worse, which will mean that hundreds of millions of Americans will again lose heavily, just as they did under Reagan, Bush Sr, and under Bush Jr too.

The way you spout off against conservatives tells me you never have done any real research on your own. Such a pitty. Closed minds never learn anything and believe all the BS they and others put out.

By the way Im a independent voter and I dont like either Party. Both have played the people for years and ruined this great Nation. The reason Im voting for Romney is that Oba,a is not man enough or moral enough to admit his screw ups . I can not trust a man who is so arrogant in his thinking that he cant admit to misstakes and blames them on others. I am also voting against him because of Obama care. 75% + of America was against it, yet we had it crammed down our throats by Obama, Pelosi and Reid. Romney is getting 10 million dollar checks from dark money, usually checks written from a super pac that is just a mail box in Vermont. And why? big business is so scared of an Obama with nothing to lose. They know he wants to nail rich people, and they are pouring money into Romney's empty promises to "the middle class" so they can save money on taxes for the next 4 years.

Concerning Mitt Romney,

The following is the question that I have asked many people to answer honestly, and after many times, I still get the same look on people's and friend faces, every time I asked it.

Why someone who is reportedly worth somewhere in the 200 million USD ( Romney), and paid about $ 3,000,000.00 in taxes last year, suddenly has the urge to be the next President of the United States earning about $ 145,000.00 a year, minus FICA and Social Security deductions?

The Presidential salary does not even come close to cover ( Romney's ) tax bill, even after he cheated all the way down to the 15 % bracket( well, he actually said he only paid 13 % on Tv ).

Is there anything else that we THE PEOPLE need to know about it?

Hasn't Romney made enough money through out his political career, connections and power deals yet?

I'm sorry but my 3rd Grade math just doesn't add up!

And, what about his tax returns?

The problem with his tax returns( Romney's) is that they are going to show every trick in the book to avoid taxes here in the US, including offshore accounts in places like the Cayman Islands and Switzerland.
These are very expensive " tools " ( Law firms specializing in Tax avoidance ), not available to the average American taxpayer who pay an effective tax rate of 23-30% tax based on income, and that goes as well for those who earn between $ 250k-600K a year.

At the same time he( Romney) will " Demand sacrifice " from everyone else in the country who is still lucky enough to have a job that was not outsourced to China or India ( manufacturing or tech).

Therefore the average american CEO or executive, does not have a .25C/Hr raise, or a lower co-payment policy for medical services for their employees( Assembly line or Office ).
Instead, they have millions to spend in tax avoidance law firm schemes and offshore accounts, in order to hide all the money, resources and wealth they extract from their respective companies, workers, and the Federal government in the form of taxes.

Now, what about his record at Bain Capital ?

How many people lost their job in NC when they closed the mills, and sold the machinery that was hauled first to Juarez MX, and then to Asia?

Has anyone visited Concord and Kannaplois NC ghost towns lately?

Unfortunately, that's who Mitt Romney really is.

So,

Can anybody clearly see how important for Wall Street is the Presidency of the United States yet, or does anyone needs more clarification on the subject?

Carl Rove/Romney/Ryan plan split the seniors away from other Americans to get at the money. Splitting Americans withe the health care voucher, telling seniors they are protecting them, but them give everyone else vouchers that will crash health care. That voucher would never be enough and will add higher costs right off the bat to those stuck on it. As soon as the repubs could win office they would strip Social Security from seniors like they did to people under 55.

Repubs creating voter suppression laws against the elderly to keep them from voting to protect Social security, Medicare, medicaid, and the Post Office. WHY DO REPUBS WANT TP PRIVATIZE EVERYTHING TO HURT SENIORS?...Greed and love of money over America. Romney show us your taxes. Seniors pay their fair share why won't you?

America voted for a 60% majority in the US Senate in 2008, the first time in almost 50 years that our national sentiment has been that one-sided, and the passage of legislation unpopular with the minority has been the result. That same minority also presided over the first year of the worst recession since the Great Depression too, which saw the home values and retirement assets of hundreds of millions of Americans destroyed, all so a few wealthy friends of the Bush family could make record profits. And how short a memory you Republicans have, blaming Obamacare on the President, since the idea was Mitt's idea to start with, and also, would never have made it out of committee unless Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine had voted for it too!!!

Unless you work for a health insurance company or within the medical community, Obamacare will be far better for you. If you have a pre-existing condition, or you engage in risky forms of recreation, Obamacare will be your only chance to have health insurance that covers your needs. Imagine if auto insurance companies were allowed to take away your car insurance for life because you had a single speeding ticket, which almost all of us would find incredibly unfair, especially in places where police ticket revenue is high. Losing the health insurance that you have paid into your entire life just because you got sick or experienced an injury is bizarre, and yet all too common under the healthcare system that our health insurance companies so badly want to go back to that they are willing to spend billions of dollars of your health insurance premiums trying to scare us all back into their hardline.

How long did you health insurance and medical community types think that you could continue raising our medical costs at 10 times the rate of inflation before somebody put a stop to it? Between my health insurance premiums, the new deductible, all of the new copays, and the benefits that were taken away, between 2001 and 2009 my total cost for health care increased by over 600%, while since President Obama had been in office, those same costs have only increased by 20%, and there has been no further reduction in benefits provided either, in fact, a few new benefits have been added, such as a free annual health exam, and some better access to prescription drugs too.

Remember that $716 billion in runaway health-industry profits that Obama "stole"??? That was the same $716 billion that the healthcare industry stole from all of us over the GW Bush years! Anyone want to give that stolen money back to the thieves who stole it in the first place? Anyone want to see more and more Americans having to take their critical healthcare needs to public hospital emergency rooms so that those costs can be spread onto an ever-smaller group of insured customers?

One other thing: If those same 15-20% annual healthcare cost increases and those 2% annual average pay increases were to continue through 2025, what percentage of Americans could actually afford to have health insurance as it exists now, since by 2025 the total cost would be in the range of several thousand Dollars per month? In 2001 my entire cost for both medical, dental, and any mental health costs was $127/month plus 20% of my dental costs, and 20% copays for only non-generic drugs, and that cost figure was only a small percentage above what the same costs were in 1979. We Americans have been ripped-off blind by our healthcare industry, and make no mistake about the lengths that the healthcare industry is willing to go in order to revive that golden goose too.

Let's all show the health insurance and medical community that we have not enjoyed their attempt at ripping us all off for their own personal profit, and vote to keep Obamacare by voting Democrat, so that 35 million Americans currently excluded from having health insurance aren't driven into bankruptcy through our current system that allows health insurance companies to cherry-pick its customers, and to deny care to anyone guilty of getting sick or getting injured, even just once.

This is a funny statement coming from the republican party who has outspent Obama in every way so far..AS for issues comcerning women...what has or soes the republican party have in its platform that is actually for womwn in any way ? They are and are on the record as being against more health care for women..are aginst equal pay for equal work for women....they are against the poor in every way...they are going against the middle class for all they are worth...yet making sure their wealthy friends make out really well. As for the republicans wanting more tax cuts for big business..there was an article in the paper today concerning what big business was paying in taxes...with CEO's being paid much more than many were even paying in taxes..if they were paying taxes at all. MAny were getting huge refunds.

Feisty Redhead said:

Willard is losing the women vote by 10%

Willard is losing the hispanic vote by over 30%

Willard has ZERO percent of black voters

That is a 4% drop from Obama's share of the women vote in 2008. Blacks, as are students, will not show up at the polls in the same numbers they did in 2008, especially when the black unemployment rate is 15% and students have no job offers.

The polls are creeping closer and closer after Obama has been leading comfortably in most of the battleground states for the last six months. The latest Real Clear Politics average has Obama leading 47-46 with 7% undecided. That is the closest since the campaign began. Here’s the kicker. Most undecideds will go with the challenger. A University of Colorado model which had predicted correctly every presidential election since 1980 has Obama losing with 218 electoral votes to Romney’s 322, a landslide. Even more astounding in the model is the popular vote prediction, 53-47. If all the undecideds go with Romney in the Real Clear Politics average, that is EXACTLY the outcome.

Was asked why would Romney want to become President that easy to answer why_— To lower his tax bill. Put Ryan's budget in affect with lowerin the capital gains from 35% to 25% it would lower Rmney's 13.9% down to 3.9% after dropping the 10%. That would make up for about ten years of presidents pay. Poor Romney and Ryan needs a tax cut bad. Poor guys I feel for them.

Democrats stand up for the middle and lower classes of this country, these republicans don't know we have one. Republicans believe in every man for himself, democrats believe we live in a community. Family values are for everyone to live by, not just heterosexual family's. Family values are good things. Abortion shouldn't be a government choice as it is a legal medical procedure and the decision should be between a patient and a Dr. only.

You know, just a few months ago 66% of the republicans voting to pick their candidate voted anyone else but Romney. Now they are dropping their option of against him because of his religion, against him because he was the inventor of Obama cares, against him because he was to liberal in general. Many just plain didn't like him at all.

Regardless of all the lies, and half truths I certainly hope that this country especially the middle class and working poor voters, anyone that wants to really save medicare and Social Security will vote for democrats. Obama with Obama cares has extended the life of Medicare by 8 years. This is enough time to come up with a comprehensive plan to save it, not to destroy it like the voucher system would.

Crucify or barbecue? How do you want to do it?

But that's cannibalism...going back to the middle ages - no surprise, Conservatives do stick to traditions. Minorities have always been victims, but this time they are doing it to one of their own? Human sacrifice?

Wow. Did I just read that you're not voting for Obama because HE'S the arrogant one? Seriously, you think that Obama is more arrogant than Mitt Romney? It's hard to imagine the words arrogant and Obama in the same sentence, yet that word pretty much makes up Romney's entire personality. You also consider a 10% lead in women voters to mean "pretty much 50-50," and you think that 0% of Black voters means that more and more are going over to Romney? It's nearly impossible to have a discussion with people who are this delusional.

Ron Paul on Romney: 'I don't fully endorse him for president'

Mr. Paul, in an interview, said convention planners had offered him an opportunity to speak under two conditions: that he deliver remarks vetted by the Romney campaign, and that he give a full-fledged endorsement of Mr. Romney. He declined.

"It wouldn't be my speech," Mr. Paul said. "That would undo everything I've done in the last 30 years. I don't fully endorse him for president."

@ Joe Reyna - Dude. You're delisional if you think Romney had anything to do with closing mills in NC. Yes, I saw Kannapolis and Concord, NC daily for over 45 yrs, before I had to move. Saw Pharr yarns in Landis, Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, and countless others in other mill towns. Let me help you get the facts straight Joe. Bill Clinton signed NAFTA into law. Dubya and his rep buddies, including NC senators Robin Hayes(R) and Elizabeth Dole(R) helped him and in one case Hayes cast the deciding vote to export bank computer jobs. That's why when you call Chase or B.O.A. you get a Hindu guy on the ph named "Bob" or "Rick" to help you with your account. Those jobs were suppose to go to Charlotte but bush thought more about the econemy of India than he did of NC's. No one other than people living/working in NC seemed to mind. You the consumer should see a discount from your bank with the money they save not paying American wages to US workers. Anybody got a bonus check, or something of monetary value or even a damn toaster from their bank? I didn't think so. Not spending it on long distance calls to India either. They use someting called voice over IP. Google it if you don't know what that is. Btw, both Hayes and Dole were voted out of office in 08. The people of NC clearly saw their loyalty was to bush. Dole and Hayes are both heavely invested in the pertoleum market. Thanks you dubya, hayes and dole for exporting approx 150,000 textile jobs to China and Mexico too. And yes, Kannapoils and Concord are shadows of what they once were and the ghost towns like Vale, Hiddennite, Ranlo, Dallas, etc, etc, are infinate. That was the doings of george worthless bush and his fellow rep oil buddies from 02 to 08. Not Mitt Romney. Need more clairification from someone who was actually there? Let me know. Tar Heel born and raised, I have a clue Joe.

But yet again there is a bigger picture everyone seems to be missing. Does anyone really care about the mill closings in NC? I mean people that live in other states? No. They couldn't give any less of a damn. And that's my point. This used to be 50 UNITED states. Not so anymore. This is America. So Colorado is burned up. So what? I don't live there. Oh well. Where were they from 02-08? Florida is about to be devistated by another hurricane. So what? I don't live there. Why should I care? Dirt farmers in the midwest crying over the lack of rain. So phucking what? I don't eat corn, pork, beef or chicken so why should I give a damn? None of them are people I know or Tar Heels so phuck 'em. That's their own attitude back at them. Now lets see how long before they realize I'm right, get pissed off and leave ugly replies or colapse my comment. This isn't the United States anymore, this is America. We're all on our own. When ya'll gonna figure it out? We did from 02-08!

Obama's hardly the right man for the job. He lacks the experience to fix the economic train wreck dubya left him with. He doesn't know how to create jobs and his healthcare plan is nothing more than the beginning of socialized medicine in this country. He's had Hillary sign the UN small arms treaty. This will be the cornerstone of the death of our 2nd amendment rights. He's issued 132 executive orders, one of which states the government can come take my house, my vehicles, my savings account, my guns, anything that's mine that they want and call it "national security." Why should a president that signs orders like that be trusted. Joe, can you clairify that for me? And I still want to see his birth certificate. Not a certificate of life birth. They are NOT the same legal document. It's like comparing a car title to the registration. Do any of you know the difference? If not, Joe can clairify. If he is an American citizen why was he following islam as a muslim in Jakarta growing up? Joe, help me out on this one. Oh Joe, one thing I've asked at least 1000 people and no one can answer this. Help me out bro. Isn't calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" the exact same thing as calling a drug dealer an "unlicensened pharmacist?" I'm to stupid to figure that kind of thinking out, so can you clairify please?

Romney is a typical rep. Trickle down economics doesn't work. Reagan proved it in the 80's. Rep look out for their rich rep buddies. We all know this.

Obama is a muslim. Read his executive orders and then ask yourself this. Which one of these canidates would be worse, not which one would do better. Put the horse BEFORE the cart people. muslims have vowed to bring America down from within. It's already begun. Like I said no longer 50 United States. My point? Agressors rule - step 1 - Devide, step 2 - Conquer. It's been underway but everyone is missing it due to clever distractions and political scandals.

And one last point to ponder. Why should how Romney spends his money bother me more than how Obama spends mine?

I'm done and gonna stfu. Everyone have a nice day. :) Thanks for all your help Joe. You're the man!

Hmmmm, I wonder how concerned everyone was about JFK's wealth? His family wealth was estimated at over $1 billion dollars back then, that's more than $7 billion in 2010 dollars.

How about LBJ's wealth? He was estimated to be worth $98 million, which is over $607 million in 2010 dollars.

You bobbleheads need to get off your wealth envy kick and start looking at what is best for our nation. If you honestly believe our economy is any further away from the "cliff" we were told to believe in 2008 today, you have no concept of economics other than what Barrack Hussein keeps indoctrinating in you.

      - David Stockman—the Reagan administration's point man in the fight for supply-side economics who proved when it came to deficit issues to be even more conservative than the fortieth president – has weighed in on the matter.

GOP policies have crippled our economy

"How my G.O.P. destroyed the U.S. economy." Yes, that is exactly what David Stockman, President Ronald Reagan's director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in a recent New York Times op-ed piece, "Four Deformations of the Apocalypse."

        Jim Spence,

Wealth on a candidate is not an issue when people are paid a decent salary, or have some type of safety net such as a real defined pension when they retire, not an undefined 401K plan pegged to the stock market( were you can lose the entire savings of 20 yrs of hard work), nor their house is " magically transformed " into a trade-able stock ( CDO), than can loose value without the consent of the owners( the person making the mortgage payments), or the duped investor who owns that CDO!

So under that scenario( before the time of your hero Reagan in 1986), no one gave a Rat's arses about the candidate's wealth Jim.

Do you want to know why Jim, because everyone had a fair shot at the American dream, either you had some kind of monetary retirement, or your house that you paid for 30 long years was woth something at the end of the day.

You know, it’s amazing how much you Liberals/Progressives self-aggrandize about being so “Forward” looking yet you live in the “good ole days” that you demonize the Conservatives and Republicans about. You really don’t understand.

If you really believe that we will see those “good ole days” with their bloated wages, benefits and legacy costs again, it’s understandable why you cling to the government and its repeated lies so strongly. Those days, my poor lost friend, are long gone.

The post WW II economy was a temporary at best phenomenon. First of all, it took humanity until 1960 to populate the earth with 3 billion people, since then, in a mere 50 years we have added 4 billion more. Do you honestly believe the world is just going to allow us to be the pre-eminent industrial and export power as they wallow in poverty? Please don’t be so naïve.

We had our opportunity and as we developed our wealth, prosperity and standard of living the world watched, and learned. Those 6.7 billion other people in the world have a responsibility to provide for themselves as do we. Just as our industrial revolution went through the growth steps, so are theirs. The emerging economies are here to stay, to think otherwise is narrow-minded. If you think the untrained, unskilled, illiterate laborer will ever earn $70+ dollars an hour, with benefits, you must be crazy.

We had our chance and we blew it. When our incompetent government decided it was within their powers to intrude more and more into the private sector with feel-good programs and more controls, the system began to unravel. Industries looked to other havens to produce, and 6.7 billion people were welcoming them with open arms.

Most of our manufacturing has been made as productive as possible through innovation, automation and decentralization. That’s what it’s supposed to do. This started long before your favorite bogeyman Reagan. I worked part-time, during the 70’s while in undergrad at Ford Motor Company, and remember the “Japanese invasion” and our ridiculous ignoring of it. By 1980 the unit I worked on went from 360 employees to 60 with robotics taking the other 300 jobs. So please stop your convoluted blame.

You and I know that the camel that broke the camels back was NAFTA and the WTO, neither of which were by Reagan. Our wages were doomed not only because of that but also with union intrusion and abuse driving industries offshore. You Liberals always complain about the wage disparity between CEO’s and worker compensation. It’s interesting you never mention the fact that in 1965 the ratio was 20:1. In 1990 it was 53:1. You may want to sit down for this, in 2000 it skyrocketed to 411:1. I don’t remember any of you Liberals screaming from the mountain tops back then. After the recession Bush inherited from Clinton the ratio dropped to 238:1. The ratio obviously collapsed during the 2008 collapse to about 210:1 and it’s on its way back up again.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this is right, but the only solution is to allow the free-market and more importantly and educated consumer to fix this. Everyone is thumping their chest about the 4.5 million jobs “created or saved” by Barrack Hussein but no one looks at what “kind” of jobs they are. Ninety percent of them are low wage/low benefit service sector jobs in retail, hospitality, health assistance and temporary jobs. This will NEVER rebuild our economy. We spent over $863 billion on the vaunted $timulu$, it created these 4.5 million jobs. This means each job cost us $200,000 EACH! We would have been better off to give each business $50,000 and made them create a job, this way we would have created 17 million jobs. Don’t you ever worry about where the money went to create all these jobs? You should.

Now, as far as your real defined pension is concerned, do you mean the $4 trillion dollars of deficits the cities have with regards to their “real defined pensions”? What do you think these pensions are invested in? They’re the same vehicles you can usually get in your 401K. I have been invested in the market for over 30 years, but I’m also invested in treasuries, bonds and commodities. The fact that most Americans can’t calculate a simple compounding interest rate should concern you more than how your 401K is doing.

Yes joe, we did have a shot at the American Dream until it became bastardized into “Keeping up with the Joneses”. You know this as well as I do. The words thrift and savings were replaced with credit cards, second mortgages and home equity loans. We used to live comfortably in a 1,200 sq. ft. house, today the average is 2,500 sq. ft. When the neighbor, or your brother-in-law, bought a Cadillac you bought a Beemer or a Benz. If the guy next door bought a new 18 foot Sea Ray you bought a 22 footer (I’m not saying YOU did all these things, it’s just for exemplary purposes).

In the meantime our greatest tragedy is we completely abandoned our education system and allowed a massive bureaucracy to methodically destroy it. I’m not talking about getting a college education, I’m talking about our K-12 nightmare. Most Americans read at an 8th grade level, and you want a well paying job? Or the even more mythical “living wage”? Most high-school graduates can’t use—there, their or they’re—correctly in a sentence. Hell, most of the posts here can’t use it right. Ask a high-school graduate to calculate 40% of 450 in his head and his ears start steaming. But you Liberals want more in wages. More ominously you want the government, who has amassed $16 trillion in National Debt and $120 trillion in Unfunded Liabilities to take care of your retirement (Social Security) nest egg and your health care (Obamacare). Sorry, but I’m a bit skeptical.

Yes, those issues you mention about home values and monetary retirement are concerns, yet you continue to insist the same system that is responsible for allowing it to be ruined continue taking care of it. We have over 145,000 pages of regulations in the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations). Don’t you think SOMETHING in that morass of regulations would have implicated Golden Sacks (Goldman Sachs) with some type of wrongdoing? Congress found offenses that could be prosecuted and yet Eric Holder decided not to. Jon Corzine’s company, MF Global, just lost $2 billion dollars of investors money yet Eric Holder can find no charges be brought against him. Only the illiterate masses can believe this. More regulations are NOT the answer. Enforcing and severely punishing the offenders IS the answer.

We desperately need trade reforms to make our agreements FAIR, not free. Our convoluted progressive tax system has been manipulated any which way from Sunday for a century, and we still can’t make it work. Maybe if it wasn’t 72,000 pages long and had over 1,100 different forms we could make it more “Fair” as you Liberals like to so live by. No, instead you just think tweaking a few tax rates and dropping a few loopholes will fix it. Maybe, until the next round of tax amendments are passed by our criminals in Congress. Nothing Romney did with his money is illegal. We have the most feared auditing and collection agency in the world taking care of that, the IRS. He’s not in jail, so I have to believe that whenever he sends his, over 500 page long, taxes in they are OK. I’m more concerned with what the government does with my money than I am with how Romney invests his. And so should you. Regulations cost American businesses over $1.75 billion per year, and cost small businesses, those with fewer than 20 workers $10,585 per employee, or 36% more than paid by large businesses, those with 500 or more. And we wonder why businesses are failing at rate of over 200 a day?

I can go on about our economy collapsing entitlements, union destruction of industries, monetary malfeasance by our friendly Federal Reserve, fiscal malinvestment by our criminal government, currency manipulation by foreign nations, our need for a real energy policy and other things but I think you get my meaning.

We are struggling under a 20th century economic system in the 21st century, and it has failed for a century. Keynesianism cannot work. Government cannot be the benevolent provider, only the true free-market can do that. We have to worry less about getting everybody into college and worry more about making sure we can all read, write and do simple arithmetic. America was NOT built by our government, it was built on the shoulders of domestic exportable manufacturing balanced with appropriate service industries. Our convoluted 80% consumption/service sector economy has never created the wealth, prosperity and standard of living we are accustomed to. If you can, name a country. Don’t bother, there is none.

We need to make serious changes monetarily, fiscally and under austerity. If not we are just kidding ourselves by kicking the can down the road over and over. We have to accept the following, we have lived, as a nation, far beyond our means and the message is, for the foreseeable future, that we will be forced to live beneath our means as this debt is paid.

Greed isn’t someone wanting to keep more of what they earn, its people demanding a greater share of money that someone else has earned.

I'll vote for anyone who will try to improve my standard of living ...without destroying someone else’s!

We are NOT a democracy. We are a Federal Constitutional Republic with a Representative Democracy. Democracy in this sense means we simply have periodic free elections.

Then again, we who do know the difference between the two forms of government, Republic vs. Democracy, understand your ignorance. When our own POTUS, Barrack Hussein, denies that our Constitution is a Charter of Negative Liberties, the principles of a Republic are easily lost in your confusion.

Signed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) Bill into Law allowing any US citizen to Be Detained WITHOUT trial (A federal Court Blocked it in May because it Violates the Constitution, but Obama is not trying to get it UNBLOCKED!).

He has Killed HUNDREDS of Innocent people (Including 3 American Citizens) in Pakistan and Yemen with Drone Strikes (He's Ordered even more drone strikes than Bush!).

The rate of National Debt under George Bush was Around $60 Billion a Month. Under Obama, it's been $190 Billion a Month, so that would be Nearly $600 Per US Citizen (Thanks Obama!).

Republican elders said Sunday that this week’s Republican National Convention here in Florida offered Mitt Romney an opportunity to re-introduce himself to voters heading into the height of the fall campaign season.

Re-introduce himself? That's a good one. How about showing us your taxes for starters.

Since we don't know what he's for or against , he should reintroduce his self , right now he's a Mystery Man and he's asking American to elect him not knowing who he really is , He's been running for President for 6 years and we don't really know who he is .

We know he's a Mormon Priest , we know he's a Lier , We know he's bent on giveing the wealthy a no tax break and makeing the working poor pay more in taxes to cover what the wealthy dont pay .

Actually we dont really need to know more about this Mystery man after all ...... OBAMA 2012 ......

THIS IS A COMMENT FROM A GUY WHO CALLS HIMSELF "ROB WACK" AND IT BEARS REPEATING .....

I'm shocked; shocked, I tell you!

That Romney should lie - should have to twist and torture reality to a degree that you'd think the result came from the mind of a 9-legged burrowing cave creature on an alien planet in a distant galaxy - is just...oh, alright, alright, he's never been known to do anything else and you already knew that. This Romney specimen simply does not comprehend the concept of either a lie or a truth. Those words, in his mind, mean exactly the same thing: whatever he is saying at this second in time. He can, and has - many times - said exactly opposite things from morning to afternoon or from one day to the next, depending upon his perceived audience. And no one seems to notice!!

NOW THIS IS FROM A TV INTERVIEW WITH THE LAWYER THAT QUESTIONED MITT UNDER OATH WHEN HE WAS MAKING A CASE THAT HE ALWAYS FILED AS A MASSACHUSETTS RESIDENT.....

" I have alway filed as a Mass resident when in Utah running the Olympics, Take my word for it". When he was shown a copy of his tax returns that listed Utah as his residence of record, Mitt said that must have been a mistake, and that he didn't read his tax returns, he just signed them. This was testified to under oath, when pushed further about his statement about always filling as a Mass resident he relented that the firm that does his taxes made a mistake and he would correct it by filling an amended tax return. Mitt was also questioned as to why he was given a tax benefit on his Utah resident by filing as his residence of record. Mitts response was the clerk must have made a mistake and just given him a tax break because he was helping so much with the olympics; the lawyer said ... "kinda like a reward?" Well yes, Mitt responded.

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! You just can't make this stuff up !

While the tax issue may have initially worked for you, clearly it is now providing you with diminishing returns. Considering that 46-47% of the country doesn't pay federal income taxes and that statistically that would include many of you condemning Romney for taking advantage of legal tax breaks available to him, the hypocrisy of your comments is so blatant it's remarkable. Maybe it just bothers you that a member of the "wealthy" class has figured out a way to reduce his subsidization of your deadbeat lifestyles.

And besides, what good did the other best-selling documentary "Bush's Brain" do to defeat Bush? Right. None. So if you think a "best selling" mockumentary is going to defeat a smart President like our President Obama, think again. The vast majority of Americans prefer a rational leadership, not a Tea Party wet dream, whose leader first of all, can't make up his mind how he feels about anything, and second of all, goes against its own "small government" credo by trying to legislate a woman into giving birth to a rapist's baby. Good luck with that, hon!

You say, "condemning Romney for taking advantage of legal tax breaks available to him, the hypocrisy of your comments is so blatant it's remarkable. Maybe it just bothers you that a member of the "wealthy" class has figured out a way to reduce his subsidization of your deadbeat lifestyles."

While I'm not in any position to take any advantage of the tax loopholes that favor the more wealthy, I don't begrudge those that do. But, when you are running for the President of the United States, arguably the leader of the free world, you must be an open book and transparent, especially with your financial records. You are seeking a position that can influence legislation that can further your wealth, as well as the wealth of your donors and associates. As a citizen of these United States, I am entitled to know what my potential President financial holdings are, and how they might influence his agenda. If Mr. Romney wished to remain a "private citizen", then his tax returns are none of my business. But, he has placed himself in another realm; he wants to be the leader of our Country. Therefore, I don't think it is unreasonable to know what is in his financial records. History has shown us that other than John McCain, who only submitted 2 years, but every other candidate realized the need to show their tax returns, Mr. Romney refuses. I'm sorry, but that is not acceptable to me nor many other citizens of the Country he wishes to lead.

Mr. Romney will not be receiving my vote.

        Jackie:

A decrease in revenue is not a cost in the conventional sense, although Democrats/liberals try desperately to blur that distinction at every oppurtunity. A decrease in tax revenue is simply less money that is coming into the government. I know it's hard to wrap your "tax and spend" little mind around this concept, but you can always offset decreased revenue with decreased spending.

Fool's ...that is a proper name for you....so a Tax cut that reduces revenue coming into the coffers is not a cost to our country???? Good lord that is worse than,"that depends on what your definition of is, is".

If I am running a company and I see revenues cut by 25% I have to do something to make up for that short fall or I will lose money. You guys always want to use the business analogy for running the federal government (they aren't the same but I will put it terms you understand) so in my example the company is the federal budget company......guess what, with 25% less money coming in the deficit and debt are going up....especially when the revenue not coming in is because people don't have a job and they now need help from government safety net programs to stay afloat (yep additional costs).

Clearly in the world of federal government a decrease in tax revenue is a cost.....stop your silly semantics, please.

Yes 17 of 24 of Romney's advisers are from the catastrophic Bush/Cheney regime. Why would anyone vote to have Bush/Cheney/Romney in office again? Then repubs wonder why Bush is still to blame for everything that is hurting the country! They are trying to bring Bush/ Cheney back into the white house! Now that everyone knows that Bush/Cheney lied America into Iraq war for profit and for Bush to be known as a "War President" for glory, why would vets and families of vets vote for these same people that helped Bush Cheney? Thousands of our troops killed and thousands more wounded and dying because Cheney and Bush wanted war profits to go to Haliburton with NO BID contracts. Romney hires these same people!!

        Brad:

While you may not take advantage of some of the more complex tax strategies that are available to the wealthy, they are still there for your use should you find yourself in a position to utalize them. Also, there are many exemptions and deductions available to the less successful that are not available to the wealthy which, coupled with the Bush tax cuts, is why 1/2 the country doesn't pay federal income tax. While Democrats want you to believe that Romney's failure to release his tax returns is a matter of transparancy, it's really not. What they want is more information on Romney's wealth so they can better wage their class-warfare and show how "different" he is from you. I am already aware that he is a wealthy man, so this doesn't matter to me.

Obviously, your vote is yours to do with what you choose. But make your choice wisely as this really is a non-issue and there is so much more at stake.

So I guess the ones who want "Mittens" in as President must be of the 1%, they are rich, they are male, they have no need for insurance and don't pay the same in taxes as us 99%.

Amazing all I have heard out of him is taking away a woman's right, (in fact this was the first thing I heard out of his mouth, what does he have against women) take away my health care, my social security that I have worked hard for 50 years contributing, and I still pay my 20 some % taxes.

so what the heck is he going to do for the country's best interest, what about foreign affairs, global warming that no one wants to believe, gas prices that go up when someone sneezes, etc etc

So those who want to vote for him knowing what he is going to take away, ask yourself can you live with higher taxes, no insurance if you get sick, etc., basically your freedom

Watch what you wish for, for you may get it.

        Well,

Since comment # 1 was collapsed by "unknown" dark forces as it usually happen when there is heated criticism of the GNOP, here we re-post again!

        Concerning Mitt Romney

        Fool:

Your analogy of a balanced budget....If I have an income (taxes) is reduced, lower pay; and my bills due are not reduced, and sometimes increase; not due to increased spending, but on increased on the cost of food, utilities, and transportation cost. I can try to reduce spending by eating only 1 meal a day, only heating my home just enough to keep the pipes from freezing, etc.

Most middle class people do these things, and still need to increase revenue to keep paying the bills due to lost income. The answer for balancing the budget for these middle class families is to go get another job or 2 to increase the revenues to pay the increase in the cost coming in every month.

What part of increasing the revenue for the government is so bad to you. Cutting spending is good to a certain extent, and most Americans are all for it. But, we also know that there also has to be an increase in the revenue side to even begin to reduce the deficit and start to balance the budget.

How are Romney/Ryan going to increase the revenue while cutting the spending?

Exactly, and what would you do? Unlike the government, you don't have unlimited access to the money of others to arbitrarily increase your REVENUE, so you will be forced to cut COSTS (spending) to compensate for the decrease to your bottom line. If you still can't see that these are two distinctly different things and not a matter of semantics, might I suggest you look the words up and see if that helps.

I am just wondering how many of you are going to ARGUE witht the FACTS:

(Mind you, these figures come from the CBO and IBD)

35% of Americans Receiving Government Welfare

The United States is on a “dangerous road to fiscal decline and growing dependence on government,” and this is the “real legacy of Obamanomics.”

That warning comes in an editorial from Investor’s Business Daily (IBD), which cites reports pointing to the widening discrepancy among Americans in what they pay in to government — and what they take out.

In the second quarter of last year, 107 million Americans were receiving some kind of government welfare — not including Medicare or Social Security — according to a study from the Senate Budget Committee.

That’s up from 97 million just over two years ago.

Given that the 2010 Census showed the nation with a population of 308 million, the 107 million getting government assistance now comprise 35 percent of the total population.

In today’s federal budget, 70 percent of all spending goes to aid programs for individuals such as housing, food, income, student aid or other forms of welfare, IBD reports.

But IRS data show that nearly half of all Americans, 49.5 percent, pay no income taxes at all.

According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the middle 20 percent of income earners — the true middle class — paid just 9 percent of federal taxes in 2009, and only 2.7 percent of total federal individual income taxes, while earning 15 percent of before-tax income.

President Obama has insisted that the “rich” do not pay their fair share of federal taxes. But the top 20 percent of earners paid nearly 70 percent of all federal taxes, and 94 percent of federal individual income taxes, while earning 50 percent of the income, according to the CBO.

And the top 1 percent alone paid more than 22 percent of all federal taxes, and 39 percent of federal individual income taxes, while earning 13 percent of the income.

Those earners paid just 17.6 percent of federal individual income taxes when President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981.

In its report headlined “The United States of Dependency?” IBD observed that “we’re now on our way to a European-style welfare state. This is the ugly reality of Obamanomics. It fosters dependency in exchange for financial security. But that security is a mirage.

“The only real economic security any nation has is the strength and vitality of its private economy.”

IBD pointed to two other troubling numbers.

New Census figures show that 43 percent of all immigrants remain on welfare 20 years after arriving in this country.

And a new economic study found that nearly half of Americans die with less than $10,000 in assets, which the IBD calls “a sad comment on how government has displaced personal initiative and private savings in preparing for retirement.”

The never ending attempts at diversion and division by the left are not going to work. Romeny/Ryan will win. The conventions are nothing but pep rallys. The actual vote will be on susbtantive issues and one's actual record in office, that is where the case for Obama is hopeless.

        Jackie,

Your analogy is one we can all relate to.

Look at this way. Let's say your income has gone down or stayed the same, and, like you said, your expenses have gone up and you're living with a shortfall. You could rack up a bunch of debt --- so much so that the likelihood of every paying it off is slim --- or, like a lot of families, you go out and get another job. This is a big sacrifice for you. You work your tail off to support your yourself and your family and it's hard.

You take that extra money and you intend to pay the bills. But you have a couple of spoiled kids. It's sort of your fault that their spoiled. You love them and have tried to make their lives better but your good intentions back fired, and they are a little spoiled. So they sneak into the shoebox where you hide the extra money under the bed and they buy the latest video game or X-Box or $300 Nike's, and suddenly all the extra money you worked for has been used up and you're still short of the electric bill. You reprimand them but they tell you just to go get yet another job. While you sacrifice, they don't.

I wouldn't mind paying more in taxes if I knew the extra money would be used to pay down debt, shore up necessary programs, increase efficiency. If I knew the money I work really hard for and have to give a good portion of it away would be used for good use. Unfortunately, the government has a miserable track record of showing much fiduciary responsibility. They've lost a lot people's trust in that regard. And then to berate me for not giving enough, it just makes the whole experience worse.

How are Romney/Ryan hoping to increase revenue? Spending cuts and tax increases when used together would work. Spending cuts and tax reform would work too. Our best bet to increase revenue without raising taxes would be to get people working again. Working people pay taxes, spend money, expand the economy. Getting people working again would solve a lot of our problems and would be the best way to do it.

Convention organizers canceled Monday’s activities due to safety concerns associated with an impending hurricane, leaving Romney and the GOP with one less day to drive its message about what they charge are the failures of President Barack Obama, particularly when it comes to matters of the economy.

The republicans don't need one more day to tell everyone about the failures of the Obama economy. We already know about the 40 months of sustained unemployment over 8%. We already know that the reported unemployment rate is 8.3% and rising. We already know the national debt has increased $5.3 Trillion in the past 4 years under Obama... Those of us who are smart realize Obama has nothing to offer... no hope but plenty of change... change into to something most Americans don't want. GDP at 1.5% and another impending recession... it's only a matter of time.

If Obama keeps his job, this country is going to fall since Obama's policies have destroyed our economy. I find it utterly amazing that liberals want this country to fall. I guess it's true they hate America too.

Conservative Republicans planned it This Way

After 30 years of conservative Republican destruction of the New Deal, their deliberate Bush-era spending spree in which Republicans followed the Jude Wanniskis’ “Two Santa Clause Theory” to a tee (namely, run up debt and deficits when in power, then scream about them when out of power as an excuse to hand government services and the social safety net over to private corporations) as well as the conservative Republican conspiracy to deliberately obstruct any attempt to offer relief to the working class as a political strategy to making Obama a one term President (a conspiracy in which Paul Ryan took part), America is at a tipping point where the incessant Right Wing propaganda blanketing the nation has many willful dupes –many whom even depend on the safety net Ryan is trying to destroy – believing that subjugation to the private corporate state equals “freedom.”

        Jackie,

The Clinton tax policies worked because of the booming economy. The economy was booming because of Business to Business innovation, dot.com, and new technology. What we need is the next "gotta have" product or service to get us going again. Maybe that will be new energy solutions.

If some new innovation took off to drive the economy, people would be happy to go back to those old rates.

We need a Manhattan Project type program. We need to gather the best and brightest American scientists and engineers. Lock them in a room and not let them out until they come up with the best alternative energy solution that will gain us energy independence and require infrastructure build out. Lots of former NASA employees are available!

2012 is proving to be an extraordinary election year.

Romney is playing dodgeball with the issues, making the mistake of thinking that being INSIDE THE CIRCLE is somehow 'WINNING THE GAME' while being forced by circumstance to spend most of his time trying simply NOT TO GET HIT.

Obama is on the rim throwing balls at Romney while failing to comprehend that beyond his circle is yet another, larger circle comprised of the electorate.

We, the electorate, are throwing balls at both Romney and Obama, but unwittingly, only Obama has his back turned to us. The problem for Obama is that even the balls aimed at Romney can take him down en route.

Mr. Obama, turn around on occasion and check what we're doing. It would be a shame for you to be knocked out of the game simply for focusing too completely on a captive target.

RedDevPS - I was just pointing out what the constitution says our federal government has to provide. Military spending is pretty much it. Now if there are ways to cut costs in the military I am all for it. It'd be even nicer if we didn't need a military but as long as we buy our oil from the mid east we will need a military. Even if we don't get it from them we will need one but we need one more because of it. Maybe if the rest of the world didn't expect us to step in and fight their battles we wouldn't need it either. Maybe being the best place to live, work, and raise a family has it's price and that means stepping in for those who don't have a strong military (but then that part about this being the best place is only my opinion, I'm sure all of you will point out how it isn't anymore. It still is to me.).

The military is the only reasonable expense we should have right now. It isn't the fed's responsibility to take care of the poor, unemployed, sick etc. Let the states do it or let private charity do it, they do a much more efficient job of it. No one is saying these people who clearly can't take care of themselves should be left to the wolves (though some should) but it is the states who would do a better and more cost effective job of taking care of these people.

Candice - It would be nice if we could stimulate the economy with a Manhattan style project but for it to be effective it has to come from the private sector. The 90s wouldn't have been as great as they were if not for Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and their personal computers.

NASA is an example of a government funded program though that, through research and challenging goals, created enormous off shoots into the private sector. Well, first, I think we should consider the source:

... released by Republican members of the Senate Budget Committee, show that more than 100 million people in the United States are on welfare — not Social Security or Medicare

So, no, this is not the Senate Budget Committee, this is only the Republican members of the Senate Budget Committee.

And, then, consider the research that others have already done on this report:

However, out of the 33 million on foodstamps, most also collect Medicaid, so its disingenuous to say 100 million are collecting welfare benefits by counting people two or three times because they collect more than one benefit. They also inflate the number by counting every person in a household where one recipient gets assistance.

So this is just another Republican lie. That's not to say that there hasn't been a huge increase in the number of people receiving government assistance, but there are a couple of reasons for that.

          1. The Bush recession of 2008-9 cost 8 million jobs. With average family size of 2.8, that means that about 20 million people, by virtue of being laid off, became eligible for unemployment and in many cases foodstamps and medicaid. That's about 1/5 of that 100 million number.

          2. That 100 million number quoted by the Republican members of the Senate Budget Committee includes those who receive a prescription drug subsidy under Part D of Medicare. Enrollment in Part D as of April 2010 was 27.6 million beneficiaries. So another 1/4 of that of that 100 million number is also due to George W. Bush and his Republican cronies in both houses, who all passed and signed that horrible piece of legislation. Medicare Part D is a huge waste of money - merely a government welfare program for drug companies:

          Wikipedia:

By the design of the program, the federal government is not permitted to negotiate prices of drugs with the drug companies, as federal agencies do in other programs. The Department of Veterans Affairs, which is allowed to negotiate drug prices and establish a formulary, has been estimated to pay between 40% and 58% less for drugs, on average, than Medicare Part D. For example, the VA pays as little as $782.44 for a year's supply of Lipitor (atorvastatin) 20 mg, while the Medicare pays between $1120 and $1340 on Part D plans.

It isn't the fed's responsibility to take care of the poor, unemployed, sick etc

Says who? The Constitution does not say the Federal Government shall not care for the poor, unemployed, sick, etc... The country has decided society, as a whole, has some responsibility towards this end. And to that end, states do have the responsibility for administering unemployment, welfare, and food stamp programs. Funding takes place at both the Federal and State levels.

Private enterprise seldom undertakes expensive new projects without promises of minimum risk and maximum profits. Government funding has always been the leader in such risky ventures. Christopher Columbus would never have discovered "The New World" without funds from the Spanish treasury supplied by Queen Isabella. The Panama Canal that opened shipping worldwide would never have been built without funds from the United States treasury. The efforts of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates would never have evolved without JFK's commitment to reach the moon within a decade. The internet itself was a government funded initiative.

Proponents of private enterprise and capitalism have much to tout. It is the secondary force responsible for individual leadership in the world that provides mighty incentives for success surpassed only by national government incentives.

An equally powerful third force that has been too often neglected and responsible for the downfall of many of the world's mightiest civilizations is our moral conscious and social responsibility to those at the bottom of the ladder. The elderly that have worked hard their entire lives to be struck down with illness. Those unfortunate enough to experience physical impairment to curtail their contribution to society. The many unfortunate children born to a parent or parents that neglect their parental responsibilities. Those hard working people with social or mental deficiencies that keep them mopping our floors or those that simply did their very best only to be knocked down repeatedly by mischance. We ignore all of these people at our own peril. They outnumber us three to one. They will always prevail.

We seem to be sharply divided by political chicanery that upholding only one method of social discourse will cure our ills. I propose that upholding only one method of social discourse and ignoring the other crucial two is cause of all our ills. History reminds us that all great civilizations in the past fell by that same measure.

Commonsense101 - Very eloquent. How do you propose we do this? Clearly the way we have in the past is not working and the way we are headed, currently, is only dividing us. Forcing someone to care for someone else whether by taxing or entitlement is only creating a larger and more destructive divide in our country.

I'm not the least bit against the government helping out those who need help and I don't mind paying my fair share but the government has a poor history of doing anything efficiently and in these difficult financial times I want to get the best value for my dollar. There must be a better way. I don't know what it is but I know how it currently is isn't working and isn't sustainable especially with all the baby boomers soon to retire.

Do you have a better idea?

Mitt Romney's plan "Believe in America" on his website lays it out in simple terms.

          1. Sign a Free Trade Agreement with Asia. NAFTA worked for Clinton in the 90s and Democrats shouldn't be offended if he takes a page from Bill's playbook.

          2. Raise the visa cap for immigrants to fill 1.25 million high skilled jobs with "highly educated" immigrants.

          3. Give a green card to every visa immigrant graduate who gets a degree in math, science, or engineering.

          This plan has several practicalities.

First, it acknowledges that Americans have no work ethic anymore and we can capitalize on the work ethic of developing countries.

Second, rather than invest heavily in America's failing education system rife with lazy parents, criminal kids, and unions, Romney will draw on the talent pool from other countries. This not only increases America's talent in the labor pool but it depletes the labor pool in other countries. Saudis, Egyptians, Pakistanis, and Afghans will be less likely to attack America if they are working for American corporations.

Third, Romney recognizes that by filling the 1.25 million high skilled jobs with immigrants, Americans will have greater job opportunities in the retail and service industry where most Americans are bound to end up working as education cuts have to be made to balance state and municipal budgets.

It may not be pretty, but it gets America back to work. And it all clearly outlined in Believe in America at www. mittromney .com

Redhead Ranting, I can't begin to express how much I appreciate your response. It is an initial reaching out to one that may have differing views in search of common ground. That is the most difficult first step in reuniting a once great, but severely divided nation without threat of another horrible civil war or second American Revolution. I perceive both as legitimate and immediate threats in today's political climate.

Unlike the first patriotic American Revolution or economic disparities and human suffering of the first American Civil War, this corruption is at the hands of opposing political parties both led by a thirst for greed and power that we the people have foolishly placed in their hands. Taxation without representation was the initial grounds for the first American Revolution. That threat has never been more obvious then our present form of representation. We dutifully elect representatives of our own communities that immediately sell their souls to the highest corporate bidders via lobbyists. We have actually become so careless and partisan that we allow them to uphold pledges to political celebrities above their oaths of office to the United States Of America.

Do I have a better idea? I think so and I think you do as well. Throw all of the money changers out of government. All of the lobbyists, all of the special interests. Make it a grievous and most serious federal offense for any city, county, state, federally elected or appointed government official to accept so much as a dime from any source other than their government sanctioned paycheck. Make it a grievous and most serious federal offense to offer so much as a free lunch to any elected or appointed official.

We will soon find our elected officials to be comprised of patriotic citizen officials dedicated to temporary service of their communities instead of career politicians, just as our founding fathers envisioned.

Once we have honest and true representation in government, we can openly debate my premise for a civilization that meets the needs of all of it's citizens in a modern civilization built to last.

Why would Romney have Paul Ryan as V.P. Choice when Paul Ryan pledged against America, Pledged to vote against every bill just to make Obama a one term president? Paul Ryan took the oath of office, then pledged against the constitution to King Norquist, then pledged against America to take the economy down just to make Obama a one term president. Bin Laden wrote the same thing, take the economy down to destroy America? WHY DOES PAUL RYAN SUPPORT BIN LADEN PLAN TO TAKE AMERICA DOWN?

Tomasgrande posted this the other day.

Romney Ryan tax plans...Pretty simple Kill Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and privatize for their rich friends driving up healthcare costs and trying to force you to invest in Wallstreet where Romney and Ryan will deregulate even more to take the rest of your money they didn't get the first time. Ryan Romney want to privatize the Post Office because repubs force P.O. to over fund their pension plan out 75 years just to deliberately defund P.O. This will crash service and many towns will have no service or extreme higher costs via UPS or FED EX.

Ryan Romney plans incease tax breaks for the rich and cut food stamps to starving children and families, cut benefits to Vets, and increase taxes on middle class and poor by up to $2000 to pay for their tax breaks!!!

Ryan voted for every deficit raising plan of Bush. Romney lies about his taxes saying he worked at Bain for years now caught with documents saying HE WAS, he lies saying he wasn't. Both want to end capital gains tax for the rich, many rich don't pay taxes at all due to tax loop holes they create.

Ryan and Romney both push war on women and their healthcare see www.womenarewatching.org site for info.

President Obama and Team America killed Bin Laden together. Romney said he would not go after Bin Laden because it is too expensive. Romney values money more than taking out terrorists! $$$$$$$$$$$$$

WHY ARE REPUBS TRYING TO REMOVE SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION IN MINNESOTA?

Simply because they looked at the graphics seeing the young who turned 18 usually vote against republicans. The elderly update their voter registration at the same time also. Repubs creating voter suppression laws all over the nation trying to stop the seniors, the Young, the poor, the middle class from being represented. They are changing laws that change hrs of voting, making less places to vote for democrats, changing absentee ballot laws etc, where ever it looks like a certain group votes more democratic party, the repubs create a law to remove or change it into their favor.

REPUBLICANS TAKING AWAY YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE WITH SUPPRESSION LAWS!

Obama's "agenda" for a 2nd term as President of the United States of America
            is EXTREMELY EXTREME:

            • The re-creation of a 21st-century version of FDR's Works Progress Administration program within the Department of Labor that would oversee a massive new bureaucracy and millions of new federal jobs;

            • An additional government-funded jobs program that provides "good jobs" capable of supporting a family with a "decent standard of living."

            • A new government mandate to force businesses to provide twelve weeks of paid benefits to employees who need time off to care for a new child, a sick family member, or their own illness. Plus, a higher, required minimum wage that would raise the floor for all employees.

            • An expansive, de facto amnesty program for illegal aliens via both executive order and inter-agency directives linked with a reduction in the capabilities of the U.S. Border Patrol.

            • Plans to bring in untold numbers of new immigrants with the removal of caps on H-1B visas and green cards. Immigration control to be placed in a NEW Executive Branch agency and taken away from CONGRESSIONAL CONTROL.

            • Government-funded, neighborhood-based programs to better integrate the newly amnestied immigrants into society, including education centers and health care centers. A "federal solution" to ensure that the amnestied immigrants are treated "equitably" across the United States.

"The (Mr. Obama's) amnesty plan would make it illegal to apprehend "undocumented" persons in the "premises or in the immediate vicinity of a childcare provider; a school; a legal-service provider; a federal court or state court proceeding; an administrative proceeding; a funeral home; a cemetery; a college, university, or community services agency; a social service agency; a hospital or emergency care center; a health care clinic; a place of worship; a day care center; a head start center; a school bus stop; a recreation center; a mental health facility; and a community center.""

            • A National Infrastructure Bank that would evaluate and finance infrastructure projects of substantial regional and national importance" and would finance "transportation infrastructure, housing, energy, telecommunications, drinking water, waste-water, and other infrastructures."

            • The wresting of control of the military budget from Congress by placing an "independent panel" in charge of military spending while slashing the defense budget.

            • Spreading the vastly reduced resources of the U.S. Armed Forces even thinner by using them to combat "global warming," fight global poverty, remedy "injustice," bolster the United Nations and step up use of "peacekeeping" deployments.

            • A new "green" stimulus program and the founding of a federal "green" bank or "Energy Independence Trust," which would borrow from the federal treasury to provide low-cost financing to private-sector investments in "clean energy.

            • A "green Manufacturing" revolving loan fund to create 680,000 manufacturing jobs and 1,972,000 additional jobs over five years.

            • Detailed plans to enact single-payer health care legislation controlled by the federal government.

Total cost for the above Obama 2nd term initiatives are estimated @ $ 2,000,000,000,000 (and climbing). Of course, the cost is going to be on the backs of the American taxpayers for re-distribution into these programs.

            So, WHO IS EXTREME ????

Vote for Mr. Obama and you will be voting for the complete and total destruction of America.

THAT IS RICH, considering that you are the ones that believe in fairy tales, such as Jesus living with dinosauars, just like the Flinstones. Also, global warming is a hoax, business solve all problems, we don't need regulation, that rich people will benefit the poor with "trickle down economics", THAT CHURCHES WILL TAKE CARE OF THE POOR AND HELP WITH MEDICAL BILLS, etc. etc.

Like Bill Maher said, instead of an elephant the symbol of the Republicans should be A UNICORN.

Research is meaningless to teabaggers, Julia. It interferes with their insane hallucinations. Maybe Jim would like to reach into his bag of fantasies and explain to you why Romney is expecting to take the country when the state over which he governed is going with president Obama? (That would be Massachusetts, in case Jim does not want to do the research)

WOW what a high degree of intelligence you must have. Is your IQ around the same as any other IDIOT, around 3 or is that your uppermost ability to think? You libbies complain about him not showing his taxes BUT do any of you EVER say Obama release your record? Show us WHAT passport you traveled under? Show us HOW you had millions in the bank RIGHT after leaving college and HOW you could afford a 3.4 million dollar home in Chicago RIGHT after graduating college? OR why you and your so-called wife both surrendered your Law Licenses? Maybe because they have WAY TOO MUCH TO HIDE or did something illegal and were about to be brought up on charges? Since there are only two reasons a lawyer would do that and the other reason is they DIED? Maybe he is using someones ID? Why will he not SHOW what NAME he used to apply for Student loans? But then hiding ones tax returns (One Thing) MUST be more important than answering the really TOUGH questions he KEEPS hiding!!!! I am by no means a Romney fan, but he at least appears to be MORE truth and honest than the CURRENT Liar and Chief!!!

Funny how the liberal media does not bash him for any of these comments like they bashed Dan Quayle for misspelling the word potato. 57 states really? This moron got elected president of the United States, and he doesn't know how many there are. That was a sad day for America.

kfilly - when your candidate is Mitt Romney - who stands for nothing at all - you might want to re-evaluate calling our President names or clinging to a silly misspeak. You're running an empty shell of a human being who has no values and values no one but himself. He doesn't give a damn about the country - just wants to make sure he does one better than his daddy.

And, you're stupid enough to fall for his worthless campaign. Pitiful excuse for a party the GOP has become!

              3. Call them Racist and then run away!
(Note: If facts still contine to come your way, simple repeat steps 1 thru 3)

Re-introduce himself??? Doesn't sound good when the Republican elders, or standards of the republican party keep stating that Romney needs to introduce himself. Why? Hasn't he had many chances of doing this on the campaign trail and during the primaries? Could it be that he keeps stating that he knows what his policies are, and he will give more details after the election...and has changed his mind and position numerous times during the past several months. I think they are running out of time for introductions. Pick a position, explain it in detail, and stay with it. Where are the republicans convictions and policies in specific details?

              Jackie -

Care to list the republican budget and specific policies and jobs bills?

Small business tax credits, tax incentives for businesses to bring jobs back to the U.S., keeping tax policy for the middle class, and for those making $250,000 or more. Revamping ACA but keep provisions regarding pre-existing conditions, making insurance portable and more affordable, offering choice. Keeping the provision for children up to 26. Lily Ledbetter is already law, and no one is suggesting making any changes to that. Passing at least some of the 17 jobs bills sitting in the Senate. Stimulating the economy by creating a more business friendly atmosphere, supporting pro-growth policies, reigning in expensive and redundant regulation. Offering some certainty. Getting people to work.

And these are a few policies you might like: means testing Medicare and Social Security so that the filthy rich get less benefits (if any at all), making the programs more solvent and reserving more resources for those people who need them. Reforming the tax code to eliminate loop holes that mostly the rich take advantage of, which would in effect raise the effective tax rates the wealthy pay.

Expand energy policy to support all types of energy - wind, solar, hydro, nuclear, oil, natural gas and coal. Letting the states decide how to develop their land for energy production. (See the success story of Nebraska).

Those are some of the republican's budget and policy ideas.

Candice: I agree with your list, but, most of those you listed are what democrats and Obama have already put up and the republicans blocked them, or added on riders that made them not passable.

Also, I have only heard on the stump speeches of repealing the ACA...not revamping it. Expanding energy policy...just listened to Romney and he wants to keep the fossil fuel energy policies, and stated not giving to wind, solar, nuclear because of waste of money. Just wondering.

              Jackie,

If you look beyond the talking points there's quite a bit of policy agreed upon by both the Democrats and Republicans. What obstructs it is the difference in opinion of how to pay for it and what gets attached so much of it languishes undone. Good leadership would have worked out solutions and a lot of that would have gotten done. (We should demand they pass more specific and clean bills, instead of fewer huge ones with unrelated agendas attached).

You don't hear about revamping ACA because it's more interesting and divisive to use the words "gut" and "repeal." The Republicans have "replacement" ideas out there and they include pre-existing conditions, portability --- issues that are important to all of us. You hear so few sound bites on those provisions. And if you're stuck in an ideology, you tend to be selective in what you hear.

Oil is the easiest policy to pursue and it has a divisiveness about it that works in political rhetoric. Plus the technology is already there. Conservatives support the "all of the above" policy. Many of the alternative energy projects over the last few years were huge wastes of money, and had a sense of politics and cronyism which has made us all cynical. The truth is we'd all support alternative solutions if we could come up with some that were affordable and that worked.

              Candice:

Thanks....I agree that working together would be great. My view on Congress is this...many of the democratic ideas and proposals have been talked about and brought up by republicans...and when written and proposed by democrats...the republicans turn around and are against them..voting them down.

What has been happening over the last 2 years is the republicans trashing the same proposals over and over again. I believe what you wrote in your post, that many republicans want the same things, but, why then are they not voting in congress for them??

Why isn't Romney/Ryan stumping with revamping and keeping those same principles in the ACA if republicans truly believe like you do; instead, it's all about repeal it. Republicans in the House of Representatives have voted 31 times to actually repeal the ACA...not revamp or keep some of the principles. Republican voting record doesn't actually fit with your principles and polices that you stated.

              Just an observation.

              Jackie,

Both sides are guilty of grandstanding, putting politics over policy and generally being stubborn. That accounts for the emergence of Independents, like you! It's gotten worse over the last several years. I don't know what it will take to turn things around.

Governor Romney is criticized for what seems to be a lack of conviction on issues. Maybe that's what we need. Someone not so stuck on the right or the left to get the two sides working together.

              One can only hope....again.....

Thanks for the discussion, Jackie. I have to go do something a bit more productive. I hope to bump into you again sometime soon!

Obama's Boys... the TOP Out Sourcers are also on his pay roll... Now How can that Be... I was sure that BAIN was the ONLY ONES who have EVER Out-Sourced Jobs in America..

WASHINGTON -- During the past two weeks, President Barack Obama's campaign has blasted Republican challenger Mitt Romney as an “outsourcer,” focusing on his career with private equity firm Bain Capital. The Romney campaign hit back on Tuesday, claiming Obama's stimulus package failed to protect American workers and helped create jobs overseas.

If Romney really wanted a juicy example of outsourcing, he would have to look no further than the president's jobs council.

Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, 26 business leaders assembled by the president for job-spurring ideas, includes representatives of several companies that have used outsourcing, fueling job creation abroad and job losses in the U.S. Shipping work to low-cost overseas labor markets has been a trend in American manufacturing for decades. The White House has a plan to curb outsourcing, but companies represented on the jobs council reveal just how pervasive the practice is.

There’s General Electric, whose CEO Jeffrey Immelt has served as chair of the advisory board since January 2011. Since Immelt took over GE in 2001, the company has lost 37,000 American jobs, and added 25,000 jobs overseas, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Some of those U.S. job losses are inflated by the company’s sale of NBC to Comcast in 2009.

Chris Townsend, political director of the United Electrical Workers labor union that represents roughly 5,500 GE employees in the U.S., said the company has closed more than 30 U.S. plants since Obama took office. GE would not confirm the number.

GE "is a company that, despite the constant claims of growth, continues to shrink in the United States,” Townsend said. “These are a mixture of things from garden-variety, old-line manufacturing plants to electrical apparatus service facilities, sometimes something to do with servicing. Several of them were GE Capital.”

GE's outsourcing-related job losses have occurred over a long period, Townsend said. Unlike some of the companies that Bain Capital invested in -- which quickly fell into bankruptcy, faced layoffs or saw jobs shipped overseas as the private equity firm continued to profit -- the GE plant closures have happened slowly, he said.

“If you just back up five, 10, 15 years, those were all plants that were in slow, steady decline," Townsend said. "And that’s been the tradition of a lot of these things. All we’re detecting is the end of the era of these companies really wanting to do mass manufacturing in this country.”

GE spokesman Andrew Williams said the company has increased its U.S. workforce in recent years with 17 new plant openings since 2009. He said GE’s foreign revenue has increased significantly since Immelt became CEO in 2001. The company’s exports are ultimately good for American labor, he said.

“If you’re going to keep jobs in the U.S., it has to be through exports,” Williams said.

Scott Paul, founding executive director of the Alliance of American Manufacturing, said he’s generally pleased with Obama’s record on preventing outsourcing. Though he criticized the administration for doing little to stop Chinese currency manipulation -- which drives up the price of U.S. exports and hurts American manufacturing -- he praised the president’s politically difficult move to bail out the auto industry and his tax policy proposal laid out in the most recent State of the Union speech.

But when it comes to the composition of the jobs council, successor to the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board, “it’s a different story,” Paul said. “The optics of this are stupid, the economics are stupid, the policy is stupid.”

The jobs council also includes the AFL-CIO, though the labor union dissented from its final recommendations. And, to be sure, the mere presence of a company on the council does not equal an endorsement by the White House of all of its activities

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage said the council advises the administration and doesn't set policy, and that being named to the jobs council does not mean the White House supports all of the companies' activities.

“The Jobs Council is an outside advisory board comprised of a number of individuals with diverse opinions and backgrounds, and just because a company is on the Council doesn’t mean that we endorse its specific business decisions,” Brundage said in an email. “The council is only intended to provide outside advice and recommendations on ways to create jobs here at home and improve our global competitive edge.”

Another company represented on the jobs board is Boeing, whose CEO, James McNerney, also chairs the President’s Export Council, the principal advisory committee on international trade. The aerospace giant has shed over 14,000 American jobs since 2008, according to a recent report by Public Campaign, a campaign reform advocacy group.

Since McNerney became CEO in 2005, he has done little to reverse the trend of outsourcing established more than a decade ago, according to Stan Sorscher, who worked as a physicist at Boeing from 1980 to 2000. Sorscher remains in regular contact with Boeing employees as a representative for the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace labor union.

Sorscher said he witnessed a “culture war” at the company in late-1990s, when the company shifted from in-house design and manufacturing to a global supply chain. Sorscher said he believes that McNerney shares that new vision, which culminated in Boeing outsourcing nearly every part of the supply chain for the new 787 Dreamliner jet. The company has since admitted that outsourcing was responsible for driving up costs and delaying the project for three years.

“Boeing followed the textbook of outsourcing and dismantling the integrated design and manufacturing community" that had been a staple of the company,” Sorscher told The Huffington Post about the 787 project. “The biggest failure I could imagine would be that we could be six months late. It just never occurred to me we could blow it as much as we did.”

Boeing now views China as a trading partner, rather a competitor, said Sorscher. He said Boeing is counting on China to buy 5,000 planes by 2030. China, he said, "would gladly pay top-sucker price for whatever wreck is left after we’ve mismanaged this program and the next program and the one after that.”

In the last few months, Boeing has ramped up business in China. In September 2011, the company signed a 10-year contract with the state-owned Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co. to build horizontal stabilizers for the 737 jet. The contract is the company’s largest with a Chinese supplier. And in March, Boeing announced partnership with the Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China on energy research.

Several other corporations represented on the jobs council also rely on outsourcing.

Xerox, for example, has a business model that depends on providing its outsourcing services to other companies worldwide. In its most recent annual report, Xerox said it is the “largest worldwide diversified business process outsourcing company in the large and growing BPO market.”

American Express, one of the pioneers of outsourcing call centers to India in the 1980s, still depends on “outsourcing functions … [and] relocating certain functions to lower-cost overseas locations,” according to its most recent SEC filings.

Even jobs council representative Permac Industries, a 36-employee precision part manufacturer located in suburban Minneapolis, is finding its place in the global supply chain. The company offers “outsourcing management, a process where Permac teams up with other global suppliers -- inside the U.S. as well as offshore -- to get the job done,” the company’s website says. “While other manufacturers may deny the changing reality of U.S. manufacturing, Permac looks it squarely in the eye.”

The United Electrical Workers's Townsend said the outsourcing companies on the jobs council reflect longstanding failure to protect American jobs. Obama, he said "has not been serious about addressing the catastrophic destruction of good, primarily manufacturing jobs. ... Where on earth is their coherent response to this?”

"jstdafacts" Why dont you pull you head out of your rectum and actuall see the facts.

Ryans budget proposal would give medicare seniors the same healthcare program that Congress and their minions currently enjoy.

And for the rest of the Health care system forced upon the people against our will had been done so by the Democrats elitists, REID, PELOSI, and OBAMA. It was also they who put in the legislation to Exempt them selves from it as well as their staff and Unions as well.

So please if your going to quote things as fact make sure they are acctually factual. Dont put what the Democrats have done on the Republicans. Republicans have their down side as well but they are not so full of TRAITORS as the Democrats are.

By the Way people want to critisize Republicans for being with the rich. Then why is Obama associated strongly with the Rothchild Family who has control of 99% of the worlds Governments banks.

              VERNO

(Please note, it says 'GOOD PLAN' as opposed to what WE GET)

A federal employee chooses to get a "good" plan, then they will also pay for this. (But their portion of the premiums could reach as little as 25% of the total premiums.)

This insurance program is similar to other private insurance plans in that, the plans state:
              • The network of doctors you can see
              • The prescription medications covered
              • Which specialists you can go to
              • Which hospitals you can be specialized
              • What instances may cause your claim to be rejected

However, they do get an excellent set of benefits by virtue of the fact that government employees form a large pool. This enables federal employees to have wider choices. And, by virtue of the fact that they form a large pool of insureds, there is no waiting periods for most of the plans. That means their insurance protects them immediately.

Don't forget the Republicans' favorite entitlement program, the military! We spend nearly as much on our defense budget as the rest of the world combined and the GOP squeals in horror every time someone makes the completely reasonable suggestion that military spending be cut back. If we reduced America's defense budget by 25% we would still outspend the next 10 countries combined (most of whom are our allies, by the way) and we would free over $170B every year to contribute to balancing the federal budget. Instead of whining about it, the Republicans in congress need to look at our military spending with the idea they are going to pare it back to a level that is more reasonable and manageable...unless those GOP chickenhawks are planning to invade yet another Middle Eastern country, that is.

Wow!!! What a bunch of baloney. A little bit of anger there. How about all the money wasted by the congress that still is making the military refurbish MA-1 tanks because of the pork in their districts, the military stated that the refurbishing wasn't needed, and that the same factories could be used for making a new tank.

That is wasting millions of dollars for something the military doesn't want or need. It's called the Military Industrial Complex; and it has more waste than any other department. Cutting some spending in the defense budget is far smarter than cutting those whose life has changed due to no fault of their own; downsizing and outsourcing.

Poor Time. You seem to be upset that reality is imposing itself upon your fantasy world. That fact is that Dwight Eisenhower warned America against a runaway military industrial complex and that is exactly what we have right now. We need to stop giving handouts to a hugely expensive military machine that is far larger than we need and that serves little useful purpose except to provide Republicans with the opportunity to start, and bungle, foreign wars. It is sucking the life out of our government and the money out of our pockets and it is giving us only the illusion of security in return.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." -Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

We should try our best not to cut our miltary. We need our miltary to be the best in the world. I was in desert storm and we could look up in the air and see our planes flying because we had complete air superiority. We were able to completly dominate Sadam Husseins army. I just cant imagine any american in the right mind to be in favor of cutting out miltary unless its the very last resort

And………here’s more since President Obama Took Office:

Tax on Companies that ship jobs overseas- A bill that would have eliminated a tax break that companies get when they ship jobs overseas. Republicans blocked this, allowing companies to keep the tax break they receive when they ship jobs to other countries.

The Small Business Jobs Act -would give LOCAL, community banks access to billions of dollars to loan to small businesses. Republicans blocked this, then attempted to block it a second time and failed.

Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”- Would have repealed the law that forces gay and lesbian services members to lie about their sexuality and gives the military the right to discharge soldiers based on their sexuality. Republicans blocked this many times and Democrats were finally able to pass it with the support of just 2 Republicans.

If tax cuts created jobs, then where are they? What other bills have the house passed? Well, let see they passed over a 100 bills about limiting abortion, (jobs?) they named post offices (jobs?) they proposed tax cuts for the richest (jobs?)

The house passed bills but nothing to create jobs. But the house sure has blocked any bill that would create jobs.

So who is playing games on the people and who are the liars?

I don't know what you are talking about, the republicans blocked the bill that would make insider trading illegal for congress members. I wonder why?

BelieveinAmerica - clearly you don't have a clue. President Obama has proposed a jobs bill over 4 times that the GOP will not bring for a vote in Congress. It raises taxes on companies that outsource jobs; gives tax breaks to companies that bring jobs back to the US; has retraining for jobs; etc.

Times-running-out - the Campaign Finance Reform Bill was another that the GOP in Congress refused to bring to the floor. Do you not know ANYTHING the Republicans are doing? Or do you just not care?

Don't bother to explain the facts to Republicans they have their minds made up. It's Obama fault.

If they want facts just sign onto the Official Government Web Site Bureau of Public Debt. The site shows that Reagan, Bush#1 and Bush#2 created the Current National Debt. It was caused by the Reagan Tax policies and the Bush temporary Tax cuts.

In simple terms they spent trillions more than they collected in Taxes. That equals a Debt.

Candice - you might want to actually know what you're talking about before you post. EACH of those bills had so much pork attached to them they were not brought up for votes. For some, it was increasing military projects that were unneeded. For others it was similar to the "bridge to nowhere" pork attached.

The GOP has not sent a CLEAN bill forward that hasn't been given consideration. But, nice try wit the lies!

@Candice - finally, someone willing to step up to the challenge.

H.R. 2021 – The Jobs and Energy Permitting Act of 2011 - please explain how eliminating EPA environmental rules and allowing pollution creates jobs.

H.R. 2587 – Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act - explain how stopping the NLRB from doing its function create jobs.

H.R. 1938 – North American Made Energy Security Act - ok, a bill that does not allow the president to stop the Keystone Pipeline, which leads to a couple thousand jobs. Keep in mind, several governors did not want the pipeline approved.

H.R. 1852 - Reauthorizing spending on graduate medical residency programs at Children's hospitals is certainly a good idea, but again, how does it comprehensively solve the issue of creating jobs.

We can stop there - this list is a right wing talking point list. These bills do nothing to comprehensively solve the issue of job creation.

The circuit court just threw out a case that implemented regulations that even the EPA said would take $2.7 billion from the private sector and shut down coal plants. Taking money from the private sector, shutting down factories and mines costs jobs. Loosening restrictive regulation allows for business expansion and business expansion creates jobs.

When the NRLB can dictate to private business where they can or cannot build facilities, especially based on political or union agendas.....private sector business expansion becomes prohibitive. Businesses expand. Jobs are created.

The Keystone pipeline project would have created a couple of thousand jobs. You agree. Based on usual math, one job creates another, creates another. The domino effect of job creation, right? Especially since this project was mostly privately funded. It would have cost the tax payers very little.

Are you saying a couple of thousand jobs isn't worth the project? A couple of thousand people would probably disagree with you.

                      Todd Akin - WTF?

Americans are intelligent, spirited, and free-thinking. We respond and react to all kinds of news everyday. Let's all take a deep breath and THINK, really think, about what our candidates and legislators are saying and doing.

Thank you, Congressman Akin, for informing me, as a woman, that I have a little trap door inside my reproductive system that will shut if I am being raped....legitimately raped, that is, and prevent conception. I am grateful that you serve on the House Science Committee in Washington and have learned and shared this tidbit of biological science with me. Just think, I'm 61 years old and I never knew that!

I am also grateful to learn that there seems to be a difference between legitimate rape and I guess I will call it illegitimate rape. I always thought rape was RAPE, was never legitimate, legally and morally speaking, and that it was a criminal act of sexual intercourse or other sexual acts perpetrated upon a woman against her will. Please educate me as to the definition of "legitimate rape". BTW, I do understand that rape is, rarely, committed on men.

I think, sir, that you are at the very least, terribly misinformed, and at worst, a misogynist whose medieval taliban-like thinking came out of the closet oh-so-publicly yesterday. I hope you are finished as a politician and a "leader".

I think Republicans and anyone who espouses their views on human sexuality, abortion and birth control need to let some light and air actually circulate in their heads. Let me give you an example to help you think this through....

I am raped. I become pregnant as a result of this rape, because my magical little trap door doesn't shut. I am wounded mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and perhaps develop PTSD. My Republican government has made it illegal for me to have an abortion (this is what the Repubs are really after - reversal of Roe v. Wade), and so I carry and birth this child. I am single, and now I am a single mother - another social identity the Republicans frown on. I cannot work, because I have a baby to care for and raise. I am emotionally and mentally damaged from the experience of legitimate rape. I have no money to care for myself and this child. I know!!! I'll ask my government for help; after all, they made me keep the pregnancy. I'll apply for welfare......oops, just remembered, ALL GONE. So is Medicaid, Food Stamps, and child care. My Republican government has eliminated these help-the-needy programs to reduce the national debt and to shrink government, and to reduce their own taxes. What do I do now? This is a serious question I would like any Republican to answer.....perhaps Todd Akin will dig into his own pocket to help me out, putting his money where his mouth is. You may call yourself pro-life, anti-abotion, some even anti-birth control, but you are not supporters of this life once it is in the world needing care and support.

And now, since children carry the DNA from the 2 people who conceived them and tend to actually look like their egg and sperm donors, I get to look into the face of my rapist for the rest of my life.

I am a victim of a hate crime, a crime of rage, a crime committed on my body, and that's the key here that the religious right and Republicans seem to ignore...MY BODY. Anti-abortion legislators are mostly men, and you have absolutely not one clue about the experience of conception, pregnancy and birth, and never will.

As a thinker, I respectfully ask Republicans to take religion, and all its inherent shame, blame, and guilt about sexuality (I should say female sexuality), out of politics. Whatever happened to Separation of Church and State? I respectfully ask you to get out of my vagina, my uterus, my whole sexual nature, and to rethink your solutions of vaginal probes, forced pregnancy, legitimate rape, magical trap doors. I ask you to consider the reality that you have absolutely no right to commandeer what choices a woman makes about her own body.

I also often think about the fact that in all the insanity around the issue of SEX and women, I have never heard one word about sperm, forcing a MAN to look at sonograms of fetuses, asking men to pay for abortion of fetuses they have created, legislating that a man who created the fetus also be considered a murderer. Really, what's up with that? How did they become exempt?

Just think about it....use your intelligence, and if that's too big of a request, use your common sense.

Try looking beyond your own back yard and see the millions of Americans suffering who have lost their jobs, homes and more importantly hope for the future. President Obama is right in there with Carter for the worst president in history and another 4 years will be a disaster for this country.

And, if you can look past your narrowmindedness you will see that it is the Republicans in Congress who have blocked EVERY bill that would have helped to increase the number of jobs in the US. And, no, the worst President in the history of our country is and always will be George W. Bush. President Obama will rank among the top ten.

The Republicans in Congress have already lowered the congressional rating to its lowest EVER!

Times-Running-Out - if you bothered to listen to or read news you would know that - once again - the Republicans in Congress refused to put the President's jobs proposal bill up for a vote prior to going on recess. The bill proposed raising taxes on companies which outsourced jobs and giving tax breaks to companies bringing jobs back to the US. It had retraining money in it as well.

It didn't get to the Senate because the Republicans blocked it even getting a vote or discussion - for the 4th time!

I don't play PARROT for anyone. I leave that to you radical far righters who know nothing but the ignorance spewed by the Republicans who are so intent on destroying the US.

Odd how, in a rant about the current economic conditions, you mention Obama and Carter as the worst presidents in history and ignore the Republican fool who tanked the American economy and caused all of our economic problems in the first place.

No, hands down, George W. Bush wins the coveted "worst president in history" title (he must covet it, he worked sooo hard to get it!). History will not be kind to George W. Bush.

The Republican Party is disgusting and the Tea Party MUST be purged. Whatever happened to my generation? I'm a boomer. We've all become exactly what we railed against in the the 60s and 70s. Shame on us. I have absolutely no respect for half of my generation, and the nation will be a better place once half of us are dead.

We "BOOMERS" are reaping what we sowed. We threw away our parents values and family values, in favor of I will do what I want. And we have. And Look where that has gotten us. We were "anti-establishment", now we are the Establishment. We gave the future generations "rights without responsibilities", "actions without consequences" and gave birth to two generations that think that they should have everything now without putting in the effort. We devalued the Family, ridiculed our parents religion, rebelled against anything and everything that put limits on us, and ushered in the future.

We are Responsilbe for the state of our decline in the USA!

I mean, didn't he run in 2008? Hasn't he been out ahead of his GOP rivals since January? Aren't the GOP SuperPac's spending money hand-over-foot...trying to tell people who Mitt is, for the past four months?

Ryan has left a trail of his own trash that he won't be able to overcome. Ryan plan kills Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, cuts food stamps from starving children and families, cuts benefits to Veterans, Forces women of rape victims to have the children if they get pregnant, kills women's healthcare , and takes the savings 716 billions from medicare that Obama and Team America created with savings from waste, raud and better streamlining....and gives that money to the rich as tax breaks. Obama used that 716 billion and invested it back into more healthcare and longer healthcare for people using the system. Yep...Ryan takes all that money from those programs and gives Romney and himself more tax breaks including killing capital gains tax on the rich.......Ryan could not be any less of an American.....but he is not done yet with his plans to destroy the middle class and poor.

Corporate welfare and welfare for the wealthy are a far bigger concern. Why would the country provide welfare of any sort to the people that do not need it. Sure makes a lot of sense .. dump the poor on the streets and funnel that welfare into the pockets of the rich.

There is no such thing as corporate welfare. You should be more concerned about the longer food stamp and welfare lines. These are people who have lost all hope for ever finding a job. Millions of Americans are suffering because they STILL can't find a job to support their families.

Believe.... Yes there are millions of Americans suffering - because of the Republican party who just doesn't give a damn about anything but winning the White House. They basically said to hell with the US - we'll obstruct EVERYTHING this President ties to do to correct the problems we face as long as it make him a one-term President.

The treasonous GOP is the party that must go!

I swear is there a Democrat on this planet who understands the operations of businesses.

I swear, is their a Republican on this planet who understands government is not a business?

"Corporate welfare" is a term describing a government's bestowal of money grants, tax breaks, or other special favorable treatment on corporations or selected corporations. The term compares corporate subsidies and welfare payments to the poor, and implies that corporations are much less needy of such treatment than the poor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_welfare

And since the right loves to rant and rage against a socialist state, why is it you folks support corporate socialism for the rich, but you only support capitalism for the middle-class and poor.

The notion that banks privatize profits and socialize losses dates at least to the 19th century, as in this 1834 quote ofAndrew Jackson:

I too have been a close observer of the doings of the Bank of the United States. I have had men watching you for a long time and I am convinced that you have used the funds of the bank to speculate in the breadstuffs of the country. When you won, you divided the profits amongst you, and when you lost, you charged it to the Bank. ... You are a den of vipers and thieves.
Andrew Jackson in 1834 on closing the Second Bank of the United States.[2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism_for_the_rich_and_capitalism_for_the_poor

Where is all the BITCHING from the LEFT HERE??? (Or is it OK when obama ben fits from it?)

WHY the DOUBLE STANDARDS ABOUT TAXES????

General Electric's CEO, Jeff Immelt, is in the crosshairs as the new chairman of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

Many U.S. multinational corporations keep some profits abroad, none more than GE: Is total was $94 billion at the end of last year. As long as corporations tell their accountants they intend to indefinitely invest those profits outside the U.S., they don't have to make a provision for federal and state taxes on them. If the profits stay abroad, they remain untaxed.

The so-called "active finance exemption" allows the income from GE's overseas lending activities to remain untaxed in the United States. It is so important to GE that the company discloses in its financial reports the periodic need for this tax break to be renewed by Congress. The New York Times highlighted the exemption in a recent piece on GE's tax practices.

General Electric, which has faced a withering hail of criticism since The New York Times proclaimed last month that the conglomerate paid no federal taxes in 2010, despite $5 billion in U.S. profits.

                        ALSO

Obama Administration Gave General Electric—Parent Company of NBC--$24.9 Million in ‘Stimulus’ Grants.

                        ANOTHER NOTE:

As to the donations to Obama's coffers, Open Secrets has GE's 2008 donations to Obama's presidential campaign clocking in at $499,130 putting the company in Obama's top 20 donators. Other big donors include Goldman Sachs ($994,795), Citigroup ($701,290), and UBS AG ($543,219).

@Times-Running-Out I remember in the 80s think it was Reagan in office when G.E. paid no taxes and Jack Welch was C.E.O closed a production line here in Kentucky sent the jobs to Mexico eliminating 25 jobs the company made so much money from that move the company gave him a 100 million dollar bonus . A couple years later he was on a news story probally a leftis media like 60 min. He was drawing Social Security he addimitted he didnt need it because of his wealth and golden paracute retirement the commentator ask him if he was ashamed for taking money from govt. program when he clearly did not need it his resounding reply was NO! typical republican take all you can get and to hell with every one else. Since you listed all of Obama's contributers why did you not include Romney's and amounts?

Poor Carl Rove the architect of the Republican Party. If he was a decent architect he would have good building materials, but this time he has been given straw to attempt to build a rock castle. He must be pulling what little hair he has out in clumps. His wood beams are warped, his shingles have holes in them and he has only hand tools as the power has gone out in Tampa.

                              Hurricane Romney

                              From the Article above:

“I'm surprised that we, the Romney-Ryan ticket, are neck and neck in the polls right now particularly with some of the setbacks we have experienced,” said Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP’s 2008 presidential nominee.

Rinse, Lather, Repeat. The Conservative Media is up to its old tricks again, lying about how the polls say it’s close so they can keep the Super-PAC money rolling in and let their minions think they have some hope.

President Obama has a HUGE lead where it counts, the Electoral College. He has enough to win ALREADY!

                              The article continues….

It’s a high-stakes act for Romney; the conventions are regarded as one of the few opportunities to sway undecided voters, whose numbers are dwindling in this especially competitive election.

There are no more undecided voters. This is another myth perpetuated by the Conservative Media.

Americans have already decided that President Obama is the best choice this November for
keeping the Middle Class strong, and maintaining our Democracy.

We need to keep the Senate, but most importantly, TAKE BACK THE DO NOTHING BOEHNER HOUSE
OF REPRESENTATIVES so we can move this Great Country out of this BUSH created recession and create jobs for the Middle Class and Poor.

                              Salud.

Do you remember when all the right wingnuts prayed that it would rain because Obama was giving his acceptance speech outside? They all swore that if it rained it would be God's referendum on Obama....well, it didn't rain (the right didn't think that was a good sign for Obama). I didn't believe it would be a sign then and I don't believe Isaac is a sign now.....but I have to laugh 'cause paybacks a b*tch!

It is interesting that Isaac was the name of the son from Abraham and Sarah. It is the birth that started the division between the muslims and the Christians. Now I am sure this has some significance although I am not sure what yet. These people need to realize that when they do something mischievous like praying for rain and disgusting lie after lie their prayers will not return void. Sooner or later they will be repaid. And I don't know how the elders of the republican part are reacting to it but the fact that the presidential candidate is a Mormon and the vp candidate started in politics because he like the beliefs of an atheist Ayn Rand has to have some of the elders in complete denial or they are praying that Romney/Ryan won't go near the White HOuse Theyhave to be. And quite frankly I don't think Ryan should be in the House of REps. No wonder we have had such calamity andobstruction from what used to be a somewhat cooperative group. The repub;icans have left the church as far as I know. And that is not a good thing for America. I hope all the republicans find the guts to vote no.

But I notice you deadbeats no longer talk about polls since they are starting to go the wrong way for you. Lets also get another fact straight for you libs, Obama does have an edge with single women but thats not the case when talking about married women who understand how to keep their legs shut so they do not need FREE birth control or an abortion because they were irresponsible by sleeping with every Tom , Dick and Harry. Rape is an entirely different issue and Romney has even said as such. The fact that Obama makes free birth control available to 15 year olds is simply pathetic and shows how disgusting you people really are.

Just ask him. While you are at it ask him were the hell are they? Secondly even if you are married you still need birth control, moron. Not all unwanted pregnancies are the result of sleeping around. Hey....here's an idea.....let's abolish birth control and abortions so that we have more women and their babies on welfare because the deadbeat dad's won't support them.
