McCaskill avoids direct hit on Akin over abortion remarks

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – One day after Rep. Todd Akin vowed to stay in the race for US Senate, dismissing calls from across the Republican party to step aside, Sen. Claire McCaskill welcomed Akin back to the campaign by bashing him for abandoning veterans during his years in Congress.

Visiting two VFW halls near St. Louis on Wednesday, McCaskill, the Democrat Akin is hoping to unseat here in Missouri, went through a list of Akin votes that took more than two minutes to recite.

Audiences were mostly male and senior citizen.  Survivors of combat in Vietnam – and at least one World War II veteran – looked on beneath baseball caps decorated with military insignia as she accused Akin of blocking bonuses for troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan and voting against health care benefits for reservists and national guard members.

“So that’s kind of the list,” McCaskill said of Akin’s voting record.  “Now, I don’t have a list like that."

The attack did not include any mention of the recent controversy embroiling Akin.

Sunday, Akin told a television interviewer that women could biologically prevent pregnancies resulting from what he called “legitimate rape.”

The remarks set off a firestorm, but Wednesday McCaskill only alluded to them broadly.

During a press conference outside a VFW home in nearby Overland, McCaskill brushed aside questions about Akin’s future.

“The voters have spoken, and he’s the nominee,” McCaskill said.

“We’re going to draw the contrasts that I think are necessary so that voters know that he’s outside the mainstream, he’s very extreme,” she added later.

Tuesday, Akin let a deadline for withdrawing from the Senate race pass.

Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., confirms with TODAY's Matt Lauer that vice presidential candidate and fellow congressman Paul Ryan advised him to step down amid the fallout of comments he made about rape and abortion.

He told NBC’s Matt Lauer during a Wednesday interview on the TODAY show that his nomination was a “decision made by the citizens of our state, not the party bosses.”

McCaskill’s VFW visits were part of a so-called “Vets for Claire” listening tour that the campaign says was arranged prior to the Akin controversy.

A VFW official in Overland asked reporters to hold McCaskill’s press conference outside the building, in order to keep the organization compliant with rules prohibiting political activity by 501(c)(3) charity groups.

Nah, The Dems with their main serial molester and accused rapist, Sweet Willy Clinton, who is now going to speak along with all those newly found women speakers, about how much the party cares about women,(You can't make up such hypocrisy),along with the likes of ALL the Kennedy boys,(You know , generations of accused rapist and murderers of women), Anthony, "HOT dog" Weiner and all the other varied and sundry womanizers that infest the Democratic Party , still makes them, the "hands on" champions of Womanizing. No matter what Mr. Akins said, actions always speak louder.

Lest we forget the infamous R's - "Widestance" Craig-ID, Foley-FL, Vitter-LA to name a few but I'm sure there are more. I don't think Weiner was EVER found to be guilty of anything but extremely poor judgement!

The common denominator in all these is they are MEN. Men run around looking for places to put their seed with little care about the result or responsibility. THEN they tell the women in their lives how to manage the women's bodies. BOGUS! So guys unless you give birth - shut up.

(JD) Under your reasoning LA's Vitter, along with a long line of Republican congressmen would be long gone. I find nothing in the actions of these men as well as the past President to compare with the attitudes and stands taken by Mr. Akin. How any self respecting woman can vote for these prehistoric (apes) is beyond me. The Republican party of which I am a registered voter in no way resembles the Republican party of 20 years ago.

Claire McCaskill is a classy lady that has proven she has the intelligence and listening skills to make a good senator to represent the state of Missouri.

Listoire: Please stop trolling, you're no better at it than I am. J.D. Still put out some real talking points and you have none. Do you think George 43rd would have been allowed to complete his term if he was found to have had an encouter Bill and Monica? The media would crucify him. The three darlings on NBC nightly talk shows would have to have a water jug and keep a straw in their mouth because they would be blowing so hard night after night their mouth would be parched.

And another thing. CNN is on the campaign band wagon. On the 18th they ran an article about a teen who got pregnant (conveniently left out how) then came down with leukemia and was denied chemo because she was pregnant so she died. Problem? It wasn't mentioned in their headline, and not until the bottom of the 2nd paragraph that this happened in the Dominican Republic, but they just had to drag this crap across the table because the time is right. Take a look at it:

http://articles.cnn.com/2012-08-18/americas/world_americas_dominican-republic-abortion_1_abortion-ban-dominican-courts-dominican-constitution?iref=obinsite

Does anyone in the USA really have to know about this?

Akins and Ryan share common beliefs on rape and abortion. Witness the bills they have co-sponsored together. Akin also does not support our troops, which isn't surprising for Republicans. They say that our troops deserve the best, but Ryan wants to cut their benefits by 13%. The only love given by Republicans is to the wealthy.

Actually it's beginning to affect Dem women too. look at the charges being filed against Janet Napolitano and her "gang" of female molesters,so, it must be caused by something you all swallow,(the line that everybody else is responsible for your irresponsibility except You,what else could I possibly be talking about? ) so if you get knocked up by one of the oh, so wonderful, above mentioned icons of the Democratic Party that You fantasize about,or even just one of the common run of the mill male dogs that hang around Democratic or OWS events to pick up the starry eyed leftovers, and even if you do not want to hear it or be called to task for Your actions, even if it includes the murder of an unborn Human Being for Your convenience,(and as far as it being YOUR body , not true, the DNA of that developing child is seperate and unique from You, and the sperm donor, although BOTH of You share the RESPONSIBILITY for creating that life),You are going to hear something You should have been told years ago, Grow Up.

I don't see what the Akins said wrong. He just said what we all know all Rep's think. Rep's think a woman can not ever be raped. They think like the Taliban does. Women are made for men to take when ever they want to take them. There is no rape. I remember Pat Bucannon was on Hardball saying that all wife's should submit to there husband. That is what these people think. Keep them barefoot and Pregnant, of course not from Rape.

Republicans seem to have trouble telling the difference between people's personal lives and the legislation they are proposing. Lot of people on both sides have done bad things in their lives. However, Republicans are pushing legislation that will legislate bad things happening to everybody. I am not aware of any Democrats legislating rape, forcing a women to suffer thru an object being inserted in her body, without her consent, with no medical benefit. Slick Willy may play it fast an loose with women in his life, but he did not push legislation taking away a women's right to control what happens with her body, or to deny her medical coverage.

GOP Voted Against 7 Bills to Help Veterans

Here's a concise extraction for easy viewing for those who are INTERESTED IN VETERANS ISSUES and need to know which party supports veterans and which party does not.

        The rejected Bills are named:

        H.R. 466 – Wounded Veteran Job Security Act became H. R. 2875.

        H.R. 1168 -- Veterans Retraining Act

H.R. 1171 – Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Reauthorization

H.R. 1172 -- Requiring List on VA Website of Organizations Providing Scholarships for Veterans

H.R. 1293 -- Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009

        H.R. 1803 -- Veterans Business Center Act

H.R. 2352 – Job Creation Through Entrepreneurship Act

DETAILS OF BILLS REJECTED BY REPUBLICANS:

H.R. 466 – Wounded Veteran Job Security Act – This bill would actually provide job security for veterans who are receiving medical treatment for injuries suffered while fighting in defense of their country. It would prohibit employers from terminating
employees who miss work while receiving treatment for a service-related disability.

H.R. 1168 -- Veterans Retraining Act – This bill would provide for assistance to help veterans who are currently unemployed with their expenses while retraining for the current job market.

H.R. 1171 – Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Reauthorization – This bill would reauthorize programs in support of homeless veterans, to assist them with job training, counseling, and placement services through the Department of Veterans Affairs through 2014.

H.R. 1172 -- Requiring List on VA Website of Organizations Providing Scholarships for Veterans which does nothing more than direct the Department of Veterans Affairs to include information about scholarships for veterans.

H.R. 1293 -- Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009 – Here'sanother bill in support of those who have fought for their country, passed by House Democrats and blocked from becoming law by Republicans.

This would increase the amount paid by the VA to disabled veterans for necessary home structural improvements from $4,100 to $6,800 for those who are more than 50% disabled, and from $1,200 to $2,000 who are less than 50%, disabled. This means, if a veteran lost the use of his legs in service of his country, the country will pay for the wheelchair ramp so that he can live at home.

By the way, the last time this ceiling was lifted was in 1992. There isn't even a fiscal reason for being against this bill, as the total cost of this bill, according to CBO estimates, would be a "whopping" $20 million. That's about a quarter (25 cents) per family of four.

H.R. 1803 -- Veterans Business Center Act – This bill would set up a Veterans Business Center program within the Small Business Administration, which would specialize in such programs as grants for service-disabled veterans, help them develop business plans and secure business opportunities. In other words, folks, it would create jobs and offer opportunities those who have fought in defense of our country.

H.R. 2352 – Job Creation Through Entrepreneurship Act – This bill essentially combines a number of other bills that Republicans had blocked in the Senate previously, and adds a few elements. The bill would again establish a Veterans Business Center Program; .... it would establish a Military Entrepreneurs Program; ...

VOTERS NEED TO SEE THIS LIST to offset the distortions offered by the GOP.

Is it any wonder that VETERANS SUPPORT OBAMA in recent polls?

Poll: Veterans Favor Obama Over Romney 'By As Much As Seven Points'

Republicans say they love the military, but their actions speak otherwise. Ditto with fiscal conservatism. Supply side economics aka tinkle down economics has never resulted in a balanced budget. Even the Ryan budget takes 40+ years to balance the budget. While redistributing much of the middle class's wealth in the form of welfare for the wealthy. Romneyhood!

Being consistent with their hypocrisy on transparency, Whiny Willard won't even release more than a partial years worth of tax returns so far. How on earth did Mitt the twit get a 100 million dollar IRA? All sorts of nasty things could be lurking in his returns. Among them millions in profits off Stericycle, the aborted fetus disposal company.

Republicans love the military contractors. They love the military industrial complex, who contribute big dollars to their districts and campaigns. The actual men and women fighting the wars that have proven so profitable to those contractors? Not so much.

IF Repubs love the military so much, why aren't there adequate services for those returning from service? Why do they have to beg to get medical treatment? Why do they have to beg to get jobs? Because Repubs don't GIVE a damn about the military - after all none of their kids are over there.

I can't speak to the above mentioned bills, but there are three main reasons that bills don't get passed. The Senate is controlled by another party and won't cooperate, or it's too expensive to pay for. or there are other attachments that run the cost up too high. The best thing that ever happened is when they gave Pres. Clinton the line item veto and then the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitional because they're smarter than Congress. I know of no attempt in either house to get line item veto into the constitution where the Supreme Court can't touch it. It's time they did.

The unfathomable question is who voted for Akin in his long-running congressional career? Obviously not rational individuals who have any real understanding of the instructions and advice of Jesus to love one another, extend tolerance and value wisdom above wealth. Pharisees and the extreme GOP have a great deal in common.

The extreme GOP does not present a conservative approach, it has evolved into hate, greed and hypocritical self-righteousness evidenced by deceit wrapped in white robes. True conservatives have compassion and wisdom, respect for alternative views and seek solutions that are positive without oppression or suppression. How can anyone with wisdom support the extreme GOP of 2012? Even Romney has no control of them - imagine them in full control!

This election isn't about Romney or Obama - it's about do we have enough honesty and wisdom to deserve and regain freedom from lies, greed and self-righteous manipulation. We need loyal opposition, not haters and traitors to the freedom to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as defined by each individual.

We need to punish the liars and oppressors by banishing them, whoever and where-ever they may be. Then, and only then, can we get down to the business of the nation with rational debate about honest and intelligent approaches.

I don't think I would take it that far Kiya. I will say that they seem to be the more sinister of the 2 major parties ( and I would know because I am a member). Southern Missouri (Mysery to those of us who have lived there and escaped) is a very different place from the Pacific Northwest that I grew up in. In many ways it was like the social clock stopped ticking in the 1950s. Most of the women I met aspired to be housewives or "somethin' to do with real estate," and I had never heard the "N-Word" used so often in my life. I think that a large portion of the damage from this sitting Congressman will come from withdrawal of out-of-state money, and not the electorate. I know Claire has some political baggage of her own. This is the state that brought us John Ashcroft, the guy that lost to another guy who happened to be dead for several months.

I agree.. I use to consider myself independent. But on review I use to vote Republican more then Democrat, until the party went insane, and started showing unfair attempts to control.. The ways they are trying to suppress the votes of those who tend to vote democrat is scary. The money from the billionaires is so insane it screams of corruption.

Also how can they say they are for small government, but then try to pass bills that would force the whole country to follow THEIR religious beliefs? Religion has no place in our government.. The protestants who migrated to America due to the Catholic supression definately had that in mind when the wrote the Constitution. How can they scream about the health care bill (that give choice for birth control) as government imposing on Religion. Yet not see bills removing a womens on their health due to their specific religion as also being government imposing one persons religious beliefs over another person religion (or lack of).

Having choice to excercise your rights according to your own religious beliefs, which is in the health code is much better then forceing your religion down my throat.

moosedung,,,it is democrats that want to have say in every aspect of your life with the daily record regulations your prophet obama signs.

Please show me what Obama regulations control my life. And don't tell me it's ObamaCare because I already live in the RomneyCare Land which is Massachusetts.

as I said, I already live in a RomneyCare land. Every year, when I file taxes, I have to prove to the state that I have health insurance. If I don't, I have to pay the fee - or tax - or whatever you want to call it. Just ask Romney if it's a tax or a fee.

BTW, the Republicans have a very short memory because they don't remember that the individual mandate was the REPUBLICAN idea back in 1993. Flip flopping on the issue does not make you against it. It just makes you a hypocrite.

I cannot believe NBC has become the protector of Barack Obama. All NBC can put as news is Romney's success and wealth, Romney's tax returns. and abortion. That is it. Nothing about Obama, nothing about all of his hidden secrets, nothing about gun control, which he is pushing, nothing about our country handing over our sovereignty to the U.N., nothing about unemployment, credit downgrades, high food and gas prices, nothing about his failure to get the economy moving, NOTHING. Oops. Now there is a story about basketball and rubbing elbows with a few NBA players. Oh well, I do not care who wins the 2012 election, as long as it is not Barack Hussein Obama. NO MORE FOR 44.

Well Joe -- President Obama isn't hiding secrets, has done NOTHING on gun control, is not handing over our sovereignty to the U.N, has created more net jobs on 3 years than Bush did in 8, had nothing to do with the credit downgrade (the House Republicans caused that) and has managed to get the economy growing slowly after preventing a depression.

Not yet, but Obama, the the Bills he's been signing into law, have laid down the foundations so he can over throw our Constitutional government.

Once Obama's new Military police authority trains enough battalions to put down any resistance, it will happen. Just give Obama 4 more years to complete the take over.

The sad thing on this election is, if Romney won and more republicans won, none of the new laws would be about energy or jobs or fixing America. It would all be about birth control (none), abortions (none), gun laws (none).

There is a disaster facing the nation with the uprising of the christian taliban. We would look more like Saudi Arabia and Iran with religious zealots running the country while the economy would be ignored.

Its truly hypnotizing to watch you people go at each other while what is really happening in this country is happening right under your nose and you don't blink an eye.

What would you need to do to over throw our Constitutional Government?

For starters, you would need a crisis that could shut down the government. For example, lets say a debt crisis where the national debt reaches the debt ceiling forcing the Government to shut down because it ran out of money. Gee, that almost happened on August 2, 2011 and is projected to happen again this year around November.

The President would need to have the authority to declare Martial Law. In March Obama issued an Executive Order that gives him the authority to declare Martial Law his discretion.

Protests of any kind would have to be restricted or prohibited. One way could be to make them a felony that carries up to 10 years in jail. That was done whan a Bill was signed into law in January, 2012 where peaceful protests are now a felony.

You would need a large police authority that only answers to one person. One that operates outside of Constitutional protections afforded every citizen. It would have to be large enough to put down any resistance like the one that was created on December 31, 2011 who's first 3 battalions are now being trained.

You would need some place to put all the people who resisted or rebel against the take over. Like internment camps and converted defunct military bases. Not hard to deceive the people about the internment camps building program, you just tell them they are being built to hold illegals. Does it really matter what the reason is for the ones that have been and are now being built in the South?

You would need to have the population dependent on government assistance as this makes population control much easier. Comply or lose your assistance would be the order of the day. With 46% of all Americans living in or at the edge of poverty and an even greater number on some form of government assistance, population control isn't a problem.

You would need to get the wealth of this country away from the middle class and into as few hands as possible. Not hard with bailouts, tax cuts to the rich, create programs where the people have to purchase the goods and services of selected businesses like health care insurance companies.

Lastly, you would need to divide the people and have them fighting each other so they wouldn't unite against you.

Right under your noses and you people don't even see it coming. If I was Obama, I would be smiling too.

Really? Put the kool aid down and slowly back away.

"Why the update? If one takes a look at EO 12919, the big change is in the Cabinet itself. In 1994, we didn’t have a Department of Homeland Security, for instance, and some of these functions would naturally fall to DHS. In EO 12919, the FEMA director had those responsibilities, and the biggest change between the two is the removal of several references to FEMA (ten in all). Otherwise, there aren’t a lot of changes between the two EOs, which looks mainly like boilerplate.

In fact, that’s almost entirely what it is. The original EO dealing with national defense resources preparedness was issued in 1939 (EO 8248) according to the National Archives. It has been superseded a number of times, starting in 1951 by nearly every President through Bill Clinton, and amended twice by George W. Bush."

Akin represents mainstream Republican thought on abortion and attitudes towards women. He made the mistake of saying what Republicans actually believe on tv. Now the country can shine a bright light on the knuckle draggers of the Republican party, and vote out of office anyone who shares such outlandish beliefs.

Mitt the twit has stated his admiration for one of the doctors who peddled the fictional idea that raped women have a natural defense against pregnancy. It's simply icing on the cake that Akin sits on the House Science Committee. As our president said, he must have missed science class. :)

We funded the rebels against the Soviets and the result was the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. Study history much?

Akin is self destructing and the longer he keeps talking and stays in the race, the focus is on him flailing and drawing attention to his psycho beliefs and how much Paul Ryan agrees with him on policy. All the better for her and Obama. Classic.

To J. D. Still: I see you like parsing the definition of rape just like Todd Akin. What "Willy" Clinton did with Monica was consensual sex between legal adults (NOT RAPE). Rape is like what Rep. Mark Foley engaged in with House pages (boys; under age). What Clinton did was grounds for divorce; not a crime. Clinton is a welcome addition to the Democratic Convention. After all, he handed Bush a budget surplus (not two wars, an immense deficit, and a crashed economy). So how come Bush isn't even invited to the Republican Convention (even as an usher)? Are you disappointed with his presidency just like Nixon? You keep stressing how we should elect a Republican. Frankly, by your own admissions, your recommendations have a terrible track record.
