Romney campaign rolls out energy policy

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – With just one week until Mitt Romney takes the stage at the GOP convention in Tampa, his campaign rolled out the candidate's energy policy -- one that they hope illustrates stark differences with President Obama, and which excites middle class voters looking for an economic boost.

The Romney policy, spelled out in a white paper and on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, focuses on developing domestic fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal - in large part by shifting federal responsibilities to the states, and by expanding exploration and production nationwide. Romney will outline the policy in oil-rich New Mexico on Thursday.

Romney's plan would make states the custodian of energy production on federal lands within their borders and allow them to implement their own federally-approved leasing practices. Such a move would effectively shift responsibility for permitting, leasing and environmental regulation to states, with the hope of speeding energy development by cutting red tape.

Romney's plan calls for reaching North American energy independence by 2020, primarily through expansion of traditional fossil fuels. The United States is currently the world's third largest oil producer, which Romney would hope to expand. The U.S. also currently imports more than half its oil from countries in the Western Hemisphere, with Canada making up a 29-percent share. Those imports could be increased through greater cooperation and by the immediate approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, and similar projects.

"The challenge in getting there is not about the resources we have, it’s not about the technology we have, it’s about the government that we have," said Oren Cass, Romney's domestic policy director. "And the real question is are we going to pursue the political reforms that will allow us to develop the resources to their fullest?"

Those reforms will also include greenlighting increased offshore drilling, slowed after 2009's BP oil spill disaster, particularly off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina where Romney's advisers argue there is already widespread support for increased offshore drilling.

"One of the things that's detailed here in the policy under the offshore section is to establish the most aggressive leasing plan ever put forward, as compared to President Obama's, which was the least aggressive ever put forward," Cass told reporters.

The GOP challenger's plan pays little attention to renewable fuels like wind and solar power, long championed by Democrats, including Obama, who has touted green jobs creation as a major part of his own economic and energy plans.

Romney's plan, in contrast, includes continued research support for alternative fuels, but would have wind and solar generation succeed or fail on their own, without government subsidies or loan guarantees, a politically unpopular position in some wind and solar producing states like Iowa and Colorado, but one Romney's advisers said they believed could be overcome by the overall economic benefits of their plan.

President Obama makes a similar argument about continued oil industry tax subsidies, arguing that the highly profitable major oil companies don't need the tax breaks, the extension of which is supported by Romney.

Romney is expected to further outline his energy plan in remarks later today in New Mexico, the sixth largest oil producing state in the country, pumping roughly 3-percent of the nation's oil on an annual basis, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Pigotry, Obama doesn't have a clue how to manage the development of alternative energy! How many failures does it take for you to learn and understand that government is no good at private sector business? You need to learn the basic principle that the private sector is the engine for inovation and capitalism is the fuel that feeds the government the funds it needs to operate... Trust that. Private industry is what has made it possible for our government to do anything... Without it, where would the government find the funds to operate.... Just read Romney's plan and then make a judgement.... Be well informed...

Romney knows absolutely nothing except how to pander to win votes. What a surprising energy policy! More oil and gas developement to give more profits to oil companies and more of the damage from fracking to the people. And states take control of energy? So profits to his political allies and poverty to everyone else. Romney is bad for America.

Speaking of Ethanol, why is it the obama will not cut the requirement of Grain which is used to produce Eth when he knows very well as the rest of the country does, that this grain is needed by the farmers to feed their live Stock which inturn feeds us.

Let the live stock die, and the people pay over the top priced for meat, as long as the ETH gets made so they can add it to our gas so Our cars run like He!!.

Oil companies don't get any special tax subsidy's.

They have access to the exact same tax deductions that every other business in the country gets.

If a wind farm manages to do 50 billion in business in a year they could have the same deductions as Exxon.

The spin and lies from the left just never stops.

Hey It'ssimple: name one item in the grocery store that is less expensive than corn, you buffoon? It is SoSimple to merely repeat what you hear on Lush Limpballs radio show without questioning the reality. Go to the grocery and you will see corn is 8 ears for $2=$0.25/ear Why not take your head out of your a$$ and think for yourself instead of repeating something that just "confirms" what you already believe? Corn is no more expensive than any coal or oil you dip wad.

Name one item in a grocery store that isn't impacted by corn?

You cant.

If it isn't corn, it eats it or uses it for transportation. Every aspect of production is now connected to this crop.

Big Harold, are you saying that the government should single out industries and punish them? Why shouldn't they get tax deductions like any other business. It is against the law to levy punitive taxis against a company like that.

Are you aware that the government makes over 6 time more on a gallon of gas than an oil company makes? Did you know their profit margins are around 2-3%?

At last an energy policy! Obama never had one, nor a budget for that matter. Solar can stand on it's own now and wind needs to. We have been subsidizing the hell out of both long enough, time for the free market to kick in and take over.

Idiot Obama put tariffs on foreign solar panels, so he saved x jobs and destroyed 10x jobs in the process. With stupid moves like that no wonder he has set records for unemployment. He also laundered over $2 billion in taxpayer dollars through failed alt energy companies who just happen to be run by campaign donors. The criminal is funding his campaign illegally with taxpayer money.

Romney got it right, we need all energy developed, both above and below ground. It takes cheap energy to recover our economy and make us prosperous again. Only then can we afford more green energy subsidies.

Of course only room temperature IQ liberals think solar and wind compete with oil. Unless you own a Nissan Lear or Ford Focus electric, solar panels will not power your car.

Return the power to the states, and allow them to decide what works for them. One size does NOT fit all.

Elliot - Oil companies do get subsidies from the government. The problem is that they are the ones that drive up the price of oil and enjoy record profits while we suffer at the pump. While I agree they should be able to exercise any tax breaks according to law, they shouldn't be getting taxpayer money(which is the subsidy).

Having said that, There's a problem many people don't see with the Keystone pipeline. If it is approved for the original path, how many people do you think will lose their property or part of it to imminent domain? The problem is it will be to a foreign company. To add insult to injury, that sludge would be shipped off overseas once refined by us (USA) so how is that making us energy dependent? Like the president said you can't make this stuff up because it's in the proposed measure which is WHY the President is looking for an alternate route. Not to mention it's kind of ironic that he would come up with this energy plan on a piece of paper CONVENIENTLY after he holds a fundraiser with those big oil executives......BUT he is the best thing for the country right now.

I know I'm going to upset some of those on the right but if Romney does get elected, Grover Norquist will get his wish of having an empty suit to just sign "their agenda" and guess what, it doesn't include US.

Hey G-9,

I don't know where you are buying your corn, but I haven't seen corn at 4 for a dollar for a long time. At best this year it has been at 3 for a dollar, and that was during the 4th of July sale. Usually it is 2 for a buck. 5 years ago it was 6 per $. So somehow I find it hard to trust your opinion when your math doesn't pencil out.

Now let us take the electric cars for example. The biggest issue facing the mass use of these vehicles is that the power grids are antiquated and can't handle it. The Hydroelectric dams use the off peak night time hours to allow the reservoirs to fill. What happens when the electric cars are so popular that they can no longer allow them to fill, because of the massive uptick in demand during off peak night time hours? This is a genuine concern of the people who design and operate these systems. What,,, do you think that wind and solar power can handle this? Not hardly, both are in their infancy.

Now I'm sure that there are those who remember the 70's when we were all told that the oil reserves would run out within 40-50 yrs. and that we needed to find alternative sources of energy. Well guess what, the scientific communities have corrected that time estimate to roughly between 2-300 yrs. That leaves us a little time to figure out the alternatives.

For now though we need to have something injected into the economy, and start to rebuild this nation. Obamas fantasies of being the savior of this nation and ALL of its misguided people is a joke. That man doesn't care one whit about you, me or anybody else for that matter. All he cares about is how much can he steal for his cronies and how much power can he gather to himself. He is scary.

All of you really need to start studying your history. The crap we have witnessed has happened before and it will happen again, but we can stop on the path before we go to far. All we need is to truly understand, rather than just react with childish emotion.

Electric cars actually run on Coal, Nuclear and Oil. And they are prohibitively expensive to buy if you had to pay the real full price for the car. And if you had to pay what ethanol really costs to make, it would cost much more per gallon than gas. It takes more real energy to make ethanol than the energy it produces. They are both taxpayer subsidized. Like Solyndra. And that worked like a charm.

Yes Charlie. That is because it is more profitable to export the oil due to the subsidies received by the oil companies.

Given the irrefutable evidence of the adverse effects of pollution (in the extraction, refining and use of carbon fuels) to humans and the environment, you would think that Romneys energy plan would kill his campaign. Germany has legislated a green energy economy and are working towards it. Japan is in the process of doing so. China is increasing green energy production at about 3 times the rate of the US. Canada, France, UK, etc, etc are all ramping up their green energy plans. And here comes the US with its head up its a**.

As I have stated before, the reich wing posters are obviously paid to do so (if not, please contact Karl Rove - he has a check for you). I can not believe that there are people out there that are so stupid.

To all you liberals/Democrats - there are a lot of us independent conservatives out here that are not associated with the Republicans and will not be, given the current status quo. So please do not lump us with the bat-s**t crazy reich wing

Now consider the fact that humans consume more and more fossil fuels each year. This is a long standing trend. So we should not be talking about current levels of consumption at all. We have to consider the exponential factor that is a reality in this equation. We will not make it another 200 to 300 years unless we do something to improve the inevitable result, should we follow your simple minded, myopic plan.

While I agree they should be able to exercise any tax breaks according to law, they shouldn't be getting taxpayer money(which is the subsidy).

For the most part, the price of oil is determined by the world markets. where oil is bought and sold everyday. From what I can tell there are two things there that really affect the price. First is the world's oil supplies and the feeling about whether or not oil is plentiful or scarce. If winter is unusually warm, for example, buyers see a slower season for fuel oil and assume demand may be down. In contrast, if Israel were to attack Iran, investors would fear that turmoil in the middle east could produce shortages and the price would go up. World events and the economy are major factors here. If the US were to make drilling and exploration easier, the markets would have more of a feeling that oil would not be in short supply and it would drive prices down. OPEC also conspires to limit their production, in a sense controlling supplies and keeping prices high. The more oil that non-OPEC countries can produce, the less relevant that OPEC's policies become, also helping to keep prices in check.

The other factor I see that drives up prices is that much of the oil is bought by people who don't even need or use it. They are buying it solely as an investment to re-sell and make money from it. They don't ever take delivery of what they buy and make their living from high oil prices. If the markets could somehow be controlled to force buyers to actually take delivery of the oil they buy, then people who actually NEED to buy oil would not be competing with those who are buying it just to profit from it. An analogy would be housing prices being driven up in the 80's and 90's by people who bought houses only to flip them and profit. Families who just wanted a place to live found themselves in a market where prices were being driven up by investors.

I do feel that the price of gasoline (which is separate from oil) is manipulated by the oil companies. They own the refineries and can very much control supplies (and prices) by shutting down refineries for repairs, etc. Again, government could help here by making it easier for new refineries to open and produce gasoline. Government regulations make it almost impossible to open a new refinery, giving the existing refineries almost monopolistic control over the supply (and cost) of gasoline in the US.

If we drill for more oil and make it easier to refine, then prices will come down drastically, fueling industry and creating thousands and thousands of jobs (many of them good paying blue collar jobs). Our current policies are choking the economic engine to be sure.

Yeah, that worked out really well, didn't it? Obama has thrown $Billions of taxpayer money away on his 'green energy' companies like SOLYNDRA - which conveniently benefited his big campaign contributors.

While the government should continue to support RESEARCH into alternative energy sources, we need to continue to use our existing fossil fuel energy sources during this transition to alternative energy that is currently going on.

Trying to artificially speed up that transition by forcing consumers to pay higher prices for energy through restrictions/moratoriums on energy development has been a real job killer for us, as well as costing family budgets when they can least afford it.

Gotta love Eric the libtard - "a giveaway to the Koch brothers." You see, when you have no viable argument, no viable plan, all you can do is criticize.

Election 2012 - Plans to create wealth for everyone vs. Obama - no plans and no hope. Guess I know who I'm voting for

I find it hilarious to read the liberal posts on here, because they are so laughably hypocritical. Everything they say about Romney can be said about Obama. You can bet the Californians don't want any state responsibility- they have run their economy into the ground. Give the power back to the states and send Obama back to Chicago!

Romney/ Ryan 2012- the only sane choice

by the way, all you bushblamers, watch this, Nixon started the decline by revoking the gold standard:

Alright, we're getting some conflicting comments about whether oil companies actually get subsidies (which are basically payments using tax dollars) or just the same level of tax breaks as every other multi-billion dollar company. I've heard both arguments before, but never seen a good resource. Can either side provide this? (And not some crappy opinion page, but a legit factual resource.)

    You asked for it :)

www (dot) bloomberg (dot) com (/) news (/) 2012-07-02 (/) cheaspeake-s-1-tax-rate-shows-cost-of-drilling-subsidy (dot) html

Notice the use of subsidy in the article, THAT is what the dems are calling it. They do not actually get money from the government. However, this law is not used very often if the majority of wells drilled has a large success rate, if it is used at that time, the IRS will, most likely, come after said company.

Alright, one more time. I hope my voice isn't too hoarse to get this across.

Speaking of Ethanol, ... that this grain is needed by the farmers to feed their live Stock which inturn feeds us

Two words: Distiller's Grains. They're what is left over from ethanol production that makes a high-protein animal feed. Amazing, fuel AND a better feed for the animals! Wow, imagine that.

But then, you people against ethanol probably still sit around drinking your beers, or if you think you're high-class, your whiskeys, scotches, and bourbons. Which are all - guess what, that's right - ethanol!

Good old C2,H5,OH. Just in different proofs. That's the difference between your Bud lites, and the E-85 at the pump - the proof of the ethanol - 10 to 14 for the beer and 200 for the E-85 (true, it's been denatured with 15% gasoline, but that's another topic).

We have a great corn crop in PA this year. Lots of rain, lots of sunshine. I don't buy it though. My neighbor gives me all we can eat, so I have no idea what it costs.

I don't like the 10% ethanol added to gasoline though. When there was a choice I drove through the Midwest to Colorado and got 10% worse gas mileage with it than with regular old fashioned 89 octane. Maybe, it was the wind. They are strong out there. A good place for windmill turbines.

          #1.55 - Thu Aug 23, 2012 12:16 PM EDT

North America, mostly the U.S. and Canada; have the largest reserves of Natural gas on the planet, more than the rest of the world combined; and we still restrict power plants from using it instead of coal, we actually force Texas and Louisiana to ship natural gas up north, and force them to bring coal to fire the power plants, Jimmy Carter though up this idea, when he was convinced that we only had ten years Worth of Natural gas left in the ground. we have enough Natural gas, proved reserves, to power every car, truck, power plant and household use for the next 200 years, and yet we build only a few trucks to run on Natural gas, and very few auto's, does anybody see the problem , with our government.

            #1.56 - Thu Aug 23, 2012 1:52 PM EDT

Saxon, you may be right, but having proven reserves of natural gas deep under the ground does not necessarily mean that we can get them out of the ground. I have heard estimates that in some areas like the shale oil in the Dakotas we can only get 10% of what is there. With natural gas extraction using fracking, the %age of obtainable is not 100%, although I don't know what the exact %age is , although it certainly varies from well to well.

Be careful when counting on what we have not yet gotten yield figures on. Natural gas is certainly a useful fuel to use for transportation and heating and electricity generation, but it is not the whole answer to our energy needs.

Half of the electricity generated is used up in getting the electricity to the end user on average from what I have read in articles that say we need to invest in a more efficient energy grid technology.

SHAAK322; THE NATURAL GAS ALREADY IN PRODUCTION READY FOR DELIVERY, IS ABOUT 100 YEARS WORTH AS OF TODAY; A NATURAL GAS engine is about 30% more efficient than a gasoline engine, does not require a catalytic converter, since it emits almost zero pollution, it also delivers more usable horsepower, requiring a smaller engine, two company's are putting up natural gas refiling stations at this time nationwide; the large oil company's refuse to put natural gas refill stations in their existing stations( the bill in congress passed making it mandatory, but was killed by the senate).Ford in Brazil is now building natural gas auto's, however , they are not allowed to sell them in the United States ( just like the vw, that gets 60 mpg. built in the states, but prohibited for sale in the U.S.,) our energy policy is being run by the large international cartels, mostly based in the middle east, we are really sold out by our own elected officials.

In other words, weaken environmental protections, and leave the red states to pollute and rape the land as they please.

Got tht right, all we can hope is that with these gas prices doing what they're doing that common Americans realize that all the oil produced in this country is shipped overseas.None of it stays here and never will, even if you pop oil wells in every square foot of the country.See most of us dont see past our borders.China and India have twice to four times the population of the US and are comsuming almost twice the oil our country does ona daily basis.Republicans have no leg to stand on anymore here..aything siad will be the biggest load of bullshyte promised to us,and we;ll soak it up hook line and sinker.Keystone was meant to ship ALL the oil from Canada down to the NO Gulf Coast and overseas to be refined...not here. The reason?..They pay more for the crude than we do.It gets refined to the highest bidder and lately it aint us.

It is better for us to pay for oil from the middle east. Let them and others dry up before we even touch our reserves. We also have to develop many different alternative fuels. New homes should be built with solar panels catching the sun and the rest of the roof grown wild. Every house should have a windmill and if farmers would convert the cattle/animal droppings to methane gas we would cut fossil fuel usage quite a bit.

For all the idiots posting on here about the Ethanol mandate (RFS) driving up the cost of food at the store, you are all WRONG! The drought is what has been driving up food prices as well as speculation by large investment companies in the commodities market. But then again, it sounds like Romney's plan fully takes into consideration the effect that fossil fuels have already had on our environment. Apparently that global warming talk is just a bunch of junk science. We definitely have not had record heat waves and drought conditions in this country over the last 3 years, and we certainly haven't reduced the polar ice caps by record setting numbers in the last decade. What do a bunch of scientists that have studied this stuff their entire lives know about it anyways! Mitt's right on target to be the biggest dumba$$ candidate of all time, and that is saying quite a lot after 8 years of Bush. Let your right wing ideology lead you down the path of stupid, but stop screwing up the economy, the political system, and the environment for my generation and the ones that come after me! You wonder why we have zero respect for adults anymore.....the youth of this country are the only ones capable of acting like adults. Baby boomers screwed the pooch and I hope that all the idiots like Valhalla Phil die of a heart attack before November.

Oh and the best way to reduce the size of government is to let 50 states decide their own individual energy policies, while still being held accountable to the federal government? That's brilliant! And what do we do with the national power grid? Do we split it up state by state, to let each state make it owns rules and regulations on how to govern electric use and control electric flow in/out of its state along state lines? When there is an energy dispute that involves different states and individual rules written by each, are we to believe that the courts are where we will realize greater efficiency? Do companies that have energy holdings in multiple states have to open their own law firms just to keep on top of regulation compliance in each state they hold an interest? Unbelievable how Willard can personify ignorance and greed in such a fantastically ironic way.

There is this unending misconception about any president and the oil business. The President has almost no control over any of it other than to lobby for what he would like from congress or perhaps use a veto. But, even all that aside, there is no such thing as American oil. There is only World oil. The only way to even put Romneys plan in the works is to know that trading ties will have to be severed and America then goes into protectionism. To be free of foreign oil, we have to have enough energy sources of our own well established. Romney is the one without a clue. Almost nothing he says he wants to do is possible but they make good sound bites.

The one thing hanging out there as part of the right wing plan is they will let the trillions of dollars come in from offshore tax free and end unionism so we can descend into the Neo Third World Economy. Low wages for all and WE WILL OWE EVERY THING AND OWN NOTHING.

That is what we face if the country goes further Right.

Do you want to wait until the gas wells give you multiple earthquakes per day? Do you at least want to know the nature of the chemicals they are pumping into the ground ? don't you think there was a reason that Dick Cheney didn't want you to know what they are? If we don't demand answers now, when do you think we will find the answers? when our grandchildren are dying of chemical poisoning?

Even so he may be onto something....but developing fossil fuels and drill drill drill will do nothing for the American people if the oil companies simply sell the American oil to what ever foreign country such as China that is willing to pay the most.

Unfortunately I'm even more addicted to fossil fuel than most people...but unless Romney wants to put a policy in place where the US exports no oil along with something along the lines of a no trade with China policy, I'm not going to listen to anything he has to say.

Solar is now competitive, it no longer needs federal subsidies. If wind isn't there now, let the free market figure out how to get it there. The problem is, coal is already being replaced by natural gas since it's cheaper. Our CO2 levels have already reverted back to 1992 levels thanks to free market capitalism. We are making progress in cleaning up our carbon footprint, we are not making progress in being energy independent. That requires drilling.

His goal is use taxpayers money (but not taxes his own) to make as much money as possible as fast as possible for his friends --while ensuring that they don't pay taxes on the increased excess profits. Sounds good on paper -- but it is really a short sighted goal for personal and corporate greed and enrichment that may very well hurt our long-term natural resources, wildlife, air and water, and the lives and well-being of our population and this country in gneral . After all, by the time the sh*t hits the fan -- the old rich guys will be long gone -- and the remainign clean air, water and land will be onwend by their heirs. My question: Why must the energy policy be "either or' and instead of Both ? Yes, we all still need gas and oil (that is what we all depended on -- like it or not) --so why not build a new refindery or two and increase drilling slightly -- after CAREFUL research and study to ensure minimum impact -- Full solar pwer will not be a reality until Exxon owns the sun!

Tell it to the over 700 dead bottlenose dolphins, mostly babies, that have washed up dead on US shores of the Gulf of Mexico, and continue to do so to this day.

What are you trying to say, since scientists are not even sure what is happening.

An environmentalist is a person who will never be happy with any situation, even if it is exactly as they wish, they will still whine about it.

Good stewardship of the land is smart and necessary but the measures the environmentalists want are just plain insanity.

I love how the Dems are crying because Romney will of course make his rich oil buddies even richer, but they have nothing to say about Obama giving millions of dollars to his energy buddies and those buddies have done NOTHING but waste all the tax payer money given to them with absolutley no results! We need to drill as well as keep looking for alternatives, but drilling now will ease the economy in this country WHILE we look for alternatives!

Would you not take a job at McDonalds to make sure there is dinner on the table for your children WHILE you look for a better job?

Anyone bother to ask for how long we can remain as the 3rd largest producer, when we rank #13 in terms of reserves? The faster we produce, the sooner the wells come up dry. #3 on the list of reserves is Canada, and they have almost ten times as much oil as we do.

The sooner we run out, the sooner we become one of the world's poorest nations.

All the fascist liberals are here spreading their lies. We have vast reserves, literally hundreds of years worth of oil. Our reserves are four times more than Canada's.

Liberal stupidity is hilarious, if we can't drill later, what difference does it make when we aren't allowed to drill now? Now is when we need oil, in a couple of decades electric and hydrogen vehicles will be replacing gas cars and our need will plummet. It's only the transition we have to handle.

Sorry but Obama already brought us to Armageddon, year after year of $1.3 trillion deficits adding to our debt, year after year of real double digit unemployment, record numbers of people on the government dole, total economic incompetence, etc.

Indeed we cannot afford to backwards to 50's style socialism nor 50's style union thuggery. If liberals were honest they'd call themselves regressives.

wow, people on the crazy pills are up early, lol.

this has nothing to do with religion, but fuel. fuel to heat homes, get produce, and product from point A to B, and being able to afford to drive to work in back, without it costing a good $100.00 off the top of their check to do it.

Green is good? sure it is, as slong as it is applicable. affordable? (nope) independant?(not even close). economical? (only for those pushing the sales) long term savings are a dream.

yes we all want a cleaner tomorrow, but dumping tons of $$ as an investment to advances the public can not afford in general is a waste. rather dumping all our eggs into a different basket because the decorations look better, doesnt mean they wont break (ask NO-bama). Green cars do not "pay for themselves", wind doesnt create long term jobs, and solar thus far has been a joke. actually more a game of take the $ and run. (just an honest assesment here).

so i agree, do what we can with what we have available to drop prices, ( produce more oil), recouperate a bit to if need be 2 yrs or so down the road, if still needed, and a proof positive effect to change current standings on our "demand for oil", is worth investing in a more cheaper economical process.

green... green isnt going to get you to work affordably. green isnt going to feed your kids that $10.00 box of cereal coming to a table near you, or put food on the table that is still edible and healthy. id like to see a greener tomorow... but in all retrospect, not china, japan, or any other nation as effectivly touted this as the way to go, but the way to milk the taxpayer.

again, once we have returned to our feet as a nation of production, a country back to work when more funds are available invest a little if need be, and it has been proven to actually BE ECONOMICAL on other than a piece of paper, and a salesman saying it will happen, when we all know it does not. IF the auto industry, and any other industry saw this as a benifit, they wouldnt need a hand out to get started. you dont need a million-billion dollar upgrade for a design change to an auto. these people already have people employed, as well a facility for that or the finaces available. if you think they do not.... you fool yourself. so WE PAY them to make a cheaper cleaner car? seriously think that makes sense?

so... we KEEP the elected scammers we have in office today, who's scamming digs further into the working mans pocket than the guy running for office, showing a promise to bringing back a workforce once championed on this planet as number 1, currently at #5ish and declining? why keep the same tools in office if they are incapable of performing the task at hand? would you keep a wrench that fits only an typwriter form 1934 to fix your car? most people trade those in for a model that "works", rather than one that takes up space, and is (too funny) cool to look at.

yet here is the rehtoric... people like rick seem to embrace like the worlds cutest puppy.

i saw the change... go right from my pocket to the government, and it plans on taking even more. when the cost of gas goes up, you pay more tax, from the gas, to the store. more you pay, the more you give to the government in taxes on that product. a vicious cycle that yes can be controlled. produce more oil=cheaper gas. cheaper the gas, more affordable it is to ship. less shipping costs, means less at the checkout counter, because WE THE BUYERS, dont have to make up the difference from loss of profits if the price were to remain the same during that increase. kind of common sense economics really.

We need to be LESS dependent on oil, not more. Increased production doesn't mean decreased prices. The oil comanies are already exporting oil to places where they can make more money. Increasing our production will only increase their profits.

Of course, these are the businesses of the Koch Brothers. Mitt Romney and the GOP do not mind turning the US into a cesspool to serve their masters.

He and his other 40 thieves have a safe heaven in other countries to go to. Fracking already is poisoning many people, and using much needed water for irrigation, instead being used for drilling. Ask the people of Oklahoma and Texas, that have had SEVER DROUGHTS, but THEIR IGNORANT, GREEDY GOVERNONRS CONTINUE FRACKING THE LAND.

If you vote for Mitt Romney, he will only destroy Alaska, and the few other places that remain untoched in the US due to drilling restrictions. They think that Global Warming is a hoax. They want you to have 20 babies, They think God will take care of humanity, regardless of how many children you have. The land is for grabs!

Trickle down economics and trickle down government both need to be put in check.

I say we also invest in capturing asteroids. And building a giant rail gun and a capsul and launch our nuclear waste and store it on the asteroids. Maybe when aliens attack we can send them a nuclear asteroid. Or Iran? Pigs fly!

My business is being absolutely killed by oil prices! I own a printing company that I started back in 1993. By 1995 we were doing nearly $750,000 in sales. We had 2 shifts and I employed 13 full time employees and 6 part time employee's.

Fast forward to 2012. We run our business out of our garage. Just my wife and me. No employee's, no growth. We print largely for the medical industry, forms etc.. With all the restrictions to Medicare/Medicaid our forms printing has dropped through the floor. Top this off with trying to remain competitive and keeping our prices low while constantly taking hits on our supplies. Most if not all of our supplies are impacted by oil prices. Inks, solvents, paper, all either have petroleum byproducts or have to be trucked from the north down here to the south. Oil prices go through the roof, so do my supply costs.

For me, anything that can be done to help our industry is good with me.

As far as the BP leak...where was Barry when this was all going down, oh that's right, golfing! And telling anyone who tried to help us, "No Thank You, we got it covered". We had it covered alright!

And lastly...to all those asking for Mitt's Tax Returns, what about Barry's school records? What's he hiding? I say Mitt, show the tax returns when Barry decides to show his school records!

the facts of this matter is this . america has too much dependance on oil from other oil producing countrys, the oil producers are getting fat rich while american citizens are being drained with high gas prices, why not drills on our own shores for oil that our nations could maybe get back on its feet, and not be plauged with the dependance of oil from other oil producing nouations, if this don't happen gas prices liable to reach ten dollars a gallon, something needs to be done, wind mills is a drop in the bucket to what our country needs for power ...so you figure this out,!!! drill for oil here in the united states or keep being doomed to high fuel prices!!!

I own a printing company that I started back in 1993.

You can't blame the fall of your business in oil prices. The computer age and internet era has arrived. Most people have NO NEED FOR YOUR SERVICES. YOU NEED TO DIVERSIFY.People used to also used to hire people to write their letters, because there were no printing services.

The world is a very different place. Computer and Internet are doing what your kind of business used to do. Even if oil will fall to the ground, you can't expect to be very successful.

And guess what. you republicans will. the windfall here is that energy rich states can make deals like Louisiana did years ago. State law requires that the state NOT get a single dime of revenue from it's own oil. So now with state control, Exxon, Mobil and the queens favorite company (bp) can get some extra gravy too. YAY More for the rich and screw you lol. yep, keep voting republican and the DuPonts, the melons etc. will simply love you. this has nothing to do with religion, but fuel. fuel to heat homes, get produce, and product from point A to B, and being able to afford to drive to work in back, without it costing a good $100.00 off the top of their check to do it.

supply is up while demand is down in this country. Learn the basic priciples of supply/demand. Also, you can produce as much oil as you wish but it will still be sold to the highest bidder which is China, India and the Middle East. Producing more will not lower the price of oil in this country. PERIOD.

Obama has no energy policy and it shows at the pump, the cost to heat homes, and the lost or never created jobs. Green energy is great, but it is neither cost effective or viable for the masses at this time. Right now the country is being held hostage by the worlds energy producers, and no one in the Obama administration cares.

The Democrats complain about the profits of big oil, but they are making more under Obama then they did under Bush. Gas is fast approaching 4.00 a gallon, and right now in the Northeast heating oil is over 3.50 a gallon and the season hasn't even started yet. We are headed for the most expensive heating season ever, and wait until people are forking over 800.00 -1000.00 a month in the winter. The lack of energy policy by the Obama administration is part of the reason the market is so unstable.

Hey Mike - maybe you're business is going down because you're a crappy businessman. I work in the medical field and with new technology, we're not printing as much. We send everything electronically. So, I guess you want to blame that on the President as well?

For you and others drinking the Rmoney kool-aid. The US is producing more oil than at any other point in our history with more wells in production. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your moronic hatred for the President.

People talk about how we need oil. Sure. But you don't need that SUV that gets 10 miles to the gallon. You don't need to drive as much as you do. I drive a hybrid and my wife drives a compact car. We average about 30/mpg. If everyone drove cars with higher fuel efficiency and drove less (heck, maybe we wouldn't be such an obese country as well), we wouldn't need so much oil. And, if we used solar and wind to power our homes, we wouldn't need so much oil and gas.

Maybe our children's children will actually have a planet to live on.

Oil is not only for energy is a big mistake to think like that, without oil you are nothing, we depend on oil for more than you can imagine, comments against oil are silly , the computer you have is made from " oil". However Obama do not have a positive energy policy that lead to independent energy, he oppose coal, nuclear, gas , but any other kind of energy , solar , wind , hydro are not sufficient to provide energy to cites, towns and transportation, that make the price of oil goes up . Romney offer a plan that include all of above , not only oil. However we must produce more oil to be less dependent from foreign countries Oils are in different grades and not all are for energy so wewill always willbe trading oil with other countries , but more oil we put on the market lower will be the price. PERIOD Why Obama relese some of our oil reserve ?

After permits are approved it usually takes 3 to 7 years to result in production. So, the production/exploration increase we see today is largely the result of the Bush policies. Now, if the trend continues for a few years then I'll start to give Obama credit - but for now the only credit I'll give him is he didn't completely stop the exploration approved by Bush.

Thank you bayllie. That is what all of the gas price complainers fail to understand. ALL oil, no matter where it is produced, is sold on the world market. The gas sold at the pump rarely contains what was produced from US crude, or if it does contain US crude, it is blended with foreign crude. That is why we are exporting more than we are importing now, and still relying on foreign oil (including Canadian.) That "great" Canadian owned pipeline will NOT reduce the cost of gas at the US pumps. Canada has already admitted several times that it will in reality RAISE the price. Commodities speculation and Chinese/Indian rising fuel demands are the two main factors that have raised our pump prices and the price of crude on the stock market. We are also now exporting a great deal of that natural gas that they are BLASTING out of Mother Earth with their destructive fracking practices.

Until the energy storage issue is solved, renewable energies will be a small, expensive part of our energy system. The science just isn't there yet. I'm all for funding research to solve the issues with wind, solar, etc. to make them viable in large quantities - and helping the industries grow once the science is there. What I'm not in favor of subsidizing an industry that isn't ready for mainstream use, and forcing consumers to pay significantly higher energy prices until the science is solved.

Also, as others have pointed out, gas for vehicles (not including things like planes) only accounts for about 40 to 45% of the oil we use - the rest is for things like computers, fertilizer, asphalt, etc.

"Rollingstone" had a great article a few months ago that tied several large Romney contributors and what these contributors would be expecting from him to enact. The Koch brothers will be pleased. Big Oil will be pleased.

BTW, why does anyone still heat a home with oil, unless you are in a remote area that doesn't have a natural gas main in the area? Maybe your state/local area should be investing in building the infrastructure necessary to provide you with that "cheaper" natural gas to heat your home. Then we wouldn't be exporting our natural resources to the rest of the world. Why hasn't the Northeast made this infrastructure investment over the past 60 years? I guess they just like to have something to complain about?

But, then again, why does the US, China, and India consume over 75% of all of the world's natural resources? We are robbing the rest of the world of THEIR resources, along with all of our own.

Ron, did you really read my comment? The domestically produced oil/NG is NOT all staying here to be consumed here. If it were, we would have been systematically reducing our dependency on foreign oil (including Canadian) for the past 30 years. It does NOT keep the money circulating in this country, except in the pockets of the major oil/gas producers like the Koch Brothers.

The only reason alternative energies are not viable is because the US government subsidies the cost of oil by using tax payer money to protect the world oil supply with our military. If the oil companies had to defend their own oil supplies or if the US government sent the oil companies a bill for protecting it then oil would suddenly be a LOT more expensive. We could also go a LONG way to reducing the debt and cost of our government since military spending is 20% of the total budget.

This is a valid issue I'd like to see researched and addressed. However, keep in mind we do that for lots of natural resources - not just oil. Unfortunately, we also use our military to protect resource production for non-US companies (ex: the massive mining operations China is building in Afghanistan - that we are providing protection for).

#1--It's only going to destroy the environment.

#2--All they will do is EXPORT the oil like they do now. It will NOT lower prices here.

#3--He also wants to do away with food inspection. How many lives will that cost?

#4--Romney ONLY works for the RICH. As everything he wants to take from us doesn't affect them at all.

#5--He's against abortion, yet he will eliminate all programs to help support those children. Is he going to support them? Or maybe the RICH can do it with all the tax breaks they pocketed since they never created any jobs with the money.

#5-- Biggest question--Are ALL Republicscum born stupid or do they just practice a lot?

OBAMA 2012--We've had enough ignorance, stupidity, and GREED. It's time to do something for someone other than the RICH.

To date...Romney and Ryans ideas do only one thing..that is enrich the wealthy..which Romney is a huge member of..and the oil company barrons. Of course, clean air is a very miner problem to the wealthy....as long as they have their millions. This country's biggest problem today is that it is being run by the wealthy ..our ideas ( the middle class ) mean nothing to our own elected officals who suck up to those like Romney and his friends.

                      ...

Ron, did you really read my comment? The domestically produced oil/NG is NOT all staying here to be consumed here.

Yes, I read your comment, but my comment still stands. If the oil is produced and sold from the US then at a minimum we get the taxes from the sale. We also have laws in place to make it difficult for companies to get money out of the country if it originated here. I realize you may not like who gets the money (ex: your comment about the Koch brothers), but I'd much rather see that money in the hands of US billionaire's than in the hands of Saudi royalty that funds militant Islamic terrorist groups.

@ Rick...you're talking out of your A$$. The Gas & Electric companies in the North East have been continually improving infrastructure to be able to deliver natural gas to every home. Home owners have the right to choose which source of fuel they heat their homes with and many continue to choose oil.

Jongular We have more oil reserves than what is being told by the Government. The main problem right now is Obama letting the chinese getting their hands on other supplies of oil . Just recently China took major control of the oil sands project in Canada. We are not going to need that pipeline running to Texas as the oil from the sands project will flow to China via BC Canada. Plus all the the BS regulations and stone walling put in by Obama's Administration, is what keeps Gas and Deisel prices high. Not to say there are other reason why gas is high mainly do to greed of the Oil corporations.

I do not agree with Romney in this energy policy as its more a give away to oil again. But I do support him and Ryan. Obama has made a total mess of the Economy and the Federal Government.

People need to read that report on Obama from NewsWeek. Shows just how incompetent weak Obama really is and Just how arrogant most of his staff is.

Just to show that Obama hasn't a clue to running a Government, The Head of the EPA has no Scientific Credentials at all. She is a Career Beaurocrat who has never worked one day of her life in the private sector. She was an aid to some Democrat who got her that job for political payback. It to bad the Media wont report on her background. I quess the media is no longer interested in keeping the whole Government Honest.

I do hope that if the states do get control of all leasing that they will trist the oil industries tail and for them to show appreciation for these leases by immediately lowering the cost of gas and deisel. Its called quid pro quo. If they want it they have to give something in return.

Quite frankly the Wind farm program is costing the tax payer more than the farms can produce. Geothermal plants have shown that they can be more productive without all the subsidies that have been thrown at other power gimics.

You would rather have the Kockheads funding our own local terrorists? I don't want the money in the hands of ANY billionaires who are trying to BUY control of our lives totally, and that is what these billionaires are doing. Do you really want to continue to be a slave to them? Or are you one of the 1%'ers? It is well past time for all of you posters to wake up and realize just how this country is totally in the control of the wealthy. Your vote in November really means nothing under the current system. It is past time for all of you to join the Popular Amendment Movement and help pass the Election/Campaign Finance Reform and Term Limits Constitutional Amendments found at www.faircampaignreform.us. Maybe we can finally change who controls the elections and this country before the 2014/16 election seasons...IF we still have a country to change. The GOP under its current direction is NOT going to improve this country. We are heading too close to becoming an extremist religious nation with legislation that the GOP controlled state legislatures and the current GOP dominated HOUSE has forced or tried to force upon us in the last two years or more.

BTW, I am NOT a Democrat, nor do I support the Democratic party, any more than I would ever support the GOP. (The ONLY Republican that I would have voted for in my lifetime would have been Eisenhower and I was too young to vote for him.) I have been a GDI since 1969, after learning about how politics work in this country in the '68 election. I have also been a NO VOTE voter here in the USVI for the past decade plus. They allow us to cast a ballot that tells all candidates that they are unworthy of our votes.

What planet did you escape from LEFTISTREPORTING? Domestic production has NOTHING to do with the pump price you pay for gas. Your pump price is based on the world market price of crude. NONE of the tar sand crude was going to be sold in the US. It was all destined for the world market once it was refined (causing even more pollution in the US refinery areas), and China was already going to be buying most of it once it was shipped from the refineries.

Wow.. The Obamabots are out early today aren't they.. Question all you Obama Supporters out there? Just how long do you think this nation can continue importing it's gas and oil for use, from the Middle East, and be subject to their political whims, while exporting our resources for sale to other countries, and remain economically strong? Our Alaska oil is sold to countries like China.. Just three months ago, our gas prices were well over $4.00 per gallon and at $5.00 in some parts of the country.. We have a temporary political reprieve from those oil bearing countries hoping to manipulate the winds of our election. However, make no mistake, those prices will not stay down long and are already beginning to climb in parts of the country..

We have coal, Oil, Solar Winds, gas reserves, all of which aren't being tapped to their fullest potential, leaving this country at the whim of others, and our current administration has the weakest energy independence platform of any President in decades. Burying your heads in the sand, doesn't stop the downhill spiral into the economic abyss, in which we are heading....Wake up and drink some coffee, (oh yeah, the coffee beans are imported too).

We have President Obama who has added more national debt to our nation in one term than any prior one term president (Republican or Democrat). We have President Obama who has submitted a extended budget that will increase our National Debt to over 22+ Trillion by 2021 (this is the legacy you want to leave your children, grandchildren and unborn great-grandchildren? Burdened with paying down a national debt that Obama has created). We have President Obama who has done nothing to equalize the fair trade agreement between the US and other countries. We have President Obama who blames others for a unemployment rate that hasn't been this high and consistent since WWII. We have President who created a "stimulus package" and most of the money went to overseas companies, and burdened the American People with a huge loan package from China to pay for it. WE have a President who has forced a Obama-Care Bill down the throats of Americans, when the majority of the country never wanted it. We have a President who has raided Medicare to the tune of over $700 Billion to fund his Obama-Care Bill, ignoring the fact that Social Security and Medicare are Trust accounts funded by taxpayer payroll taxes for retirement and medical use, not an open piggy bank for Obama to draw from.

We have a President Obama who screams over Romney not releasing more than two years tax returns and all the tax returns as Governor; while Obama has spent millions in attorney fees sealing and hiding away every personal, educational, political and travel record not only for himself, but his mother as well. We have a President Obama who shows open distain for the Constitution and would rather sue states over immigration issues, rather than repealing or amending Constitutional Law. In essence, we have a President Obama who is making up his own laws as he goes along...

We have a President Obama who has shown open alienation and disdain for the the State of Israel, one of our strongest allies in the Middle East. In almost four years, Obama hasn't visited or attempted real political friendship with this country. What Obama has done is show political allegiance to Anti-Israel Countries, such as Palestine, Egypt, etc. We have President Obama who only recently signed a friendship agreement with Israel to undermine Governor Romney's recent visit to the country. That piece of paper won't be worth the ink written on it after the election by Obama.. We have Obama who has done nothing, but, make empty promises to the Hispanic population, attempting to woo their votes once more. Oh yes, his recently went against Constitutional laws attempting to pass an Presidential amnesty bill without Congressional approval. We have a President who went against Constitutional Law by sending a raid on Libya using military forces without Congressional knowledge or approval. We have a President who has repeatedly shown little respect for the military and is currently attempting to hinder military voting in the upcoming election..

I could be here all day writing about Obama's failures during the 1st term.. However, it's time to stop voting for this man by what he says and look at what he has done. We have a blueprint from the last almost four years to show us what the next four years would be like under President Obama..

Unless you want to see this country fall into economic bankruptcy and political decline, it's time to step up to the plate, forget about political affiliation and choose a candidate who has a proved record of politically and economically turning things around.

The Romney/Ryan platform transparently lays out what needs to be fixed, how it will be done and at what cost. The Romney/Ryan platform shows how our national debt can be balanced by 2020 without cutting our military strength anymore,(as indicated under the Obama plan). Do Romney/Ryan have all the answers... No.. However, they are the only ones out there offering any viable solutions to this nations problems.. Obama is only giving us more of what we already have from him and "singing in the wind" to win votes.... That might be the legacy your willing to leave your children and grandchildren.. But, I love my family too much to do that to them... This is the most important vote of your life, because it effects the very continuance of our constitutional rights and our children's future.. Choose wisely...

                        Choose Romney/Ryan 2012.

The GOP challenger's plan pays little attention to renewable fuels like wind and solar power, long championed by Democrats, including Obama, who has touted green jobs creation as a major part of his own economic and energy plans."

If geothermal is so cost effective for energy production, then why don't we have plants being built. My uncle did a very interesting study on all forms of energy back in the late 70's/early 80's and what he found at that time was that geothermal was NOT going to be a cost effective mass production method. It is also one reason that heat pumps for residential use (which are a form of geothermal) never really caught on.

Liberals are living in the world of envy and class warfare. Policies that embrace liberals make people poor. During the Obama administration we have more people living under poverty line, more people dependent ofwelfare, average income including poor and meddle has been reduce the last 4 years and continue reducing. While liberals complain about the rich they do the impossible to push the energy price in their stupid war against oil , increasing the cost of almost everything , as a consequence the poor people are the ones that suffer the most. Liberals are not for the poor , liberals are for their stupid envy ideology that go to no where of " you don't own your success" and "the rich get rich oppressing the poor". The difference between Liberals and not, is Liberals with their foreign ideologies , want to rob Paulto give it to John, and we want John be successfullike Paul this is how America became great.

Most of the oil used in the US comes from Canada and Mexico.

As for the costs of oil, it is a world commodity, meaning it will cost end consumers the same amount whether it comes out of the ground in the US, Canada or the Middle East.

The price of oil as of late has been high because of the concern that Israel will attack Iran. Maybe you only read domestic and political news and not world or economic?

Also there are two different types of refineries in the US. If you have two different methods of refining oil into gas it means you have different cost structures. Without getting into details that most likely will confuse you, the refineries on the east and west coast are limited to being able to refine a more pure form of oil, while the refineries in the central US are able to refine both pure and less pure forms. The less pure oil is cheaper than the pure resulting in a price advantage for the refineries in the central US.

Additionally there has not been a new refinery built in the US since the 70s because of all the NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) out there. This includes REPUBLICAN states. The refineries have had to use technology to squeeze more efficiency out of existing refineries. There has also been a few refineries, mainly along the coasts that have gone bankrupt in the last few years resulting in regional shortages/tight supply lines which drive up costs and result in higher gas prices. Despite all of this the US was still able to export refined oil products to other countries including China.

Unless you are going to call for a ban on exports of refined oil products such as gas and diesel, increased production of oil will have no real impact on the price paid to fill your gas tank.

Romney did not throw windmills, in particular, over the cliff. He just indicated that he opposed subsidizing them, i.e let capitalism take hold. I have never heard of a windmill being shut down because it was broke. As a matter of fact, it is my understanding, that if you put one up the electric company has to buy your output. So with each windmill fossil fuel usage is reduced.

As the demand for windmills increases, like everything else, competition will create cheaper and more productive windmills which will further encourage investment.

What we have to do is to tell those A**holes, like Donald Trump and those idiots in the east, who say windmills , a mile or two out to sea, will obstruct their view, to go F themselves and summarily kill all "environmental " attacks which are truly aimed a delay.

Let windmills enter 21st century capitalism. It is the only way that they will succeed.

You can say the same thing about Ryan. A career politician who hasn't done anything else. And how can a person who has never had to worry about paying his mortgage or worry to have enough money to put food on the table for his kids is gonna tell me he knows what I am going through and he is gonna fix it? IMHO, Romney/Ryan = total disaster for the middle class.

I dont know if were awake when you wrote the previous comments but you really need to wake up. Wake up now!

First off, Oil prices is not regulated by the standard supply and demand economic system. So increasing oil drilling domestically or off-shore will do nothing to the price of oil that we pay. An you need to look at the situation a little deeper. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA EXPORTS THE MAJORITY OF THE OIL THAT WE PRODUCE! Why, because the price per gallon in other countries like Europe is double, and in some countries, triple what we pay here. Go to London, England with your car and see your jaw drop in shock. They more oil the produce here, the more gets exported, the more money in the oil companies pockets. Not your pockets.

Second, Coal is the dirtiest form of energy in the world, it basically pure carbon dioxide. Coal-fired electric power generation emits around 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide for every megawatt hour generated, which almost double the carbon dioxide released by a natural gas-fired electric plant per megawatt hour generated. So you want to increase coal production, increasing pollution, increasing the chance of our children developing asthma and other breathing abnormalities. All of this is unnecessary when the US can research and improve green alternative ways to produce power (Wind, solar, and geothermal). and alternative fuel options does produce more jobs. If i build a wind turbine, don't I have to hire engineers to maintain, and fix it??

I could go on and on about your narrow minded thinking but it not my responsibility to hold your hand and guide you out of stupidity. Wake up, do research, rethink, and make a decision about whats best for everyone.

Repubs are subsidising Big oil in the billions . Big oil execs testified in Congress that they did NOT NEED subsidies . So what do repubs do about it? They blocked the bill that would remove the subsidies.

REPEAT REPUBS BLOCKED THE BILL TO REMOVE SUBSIDIES TO BIG OIL WHEN OIL EXECS SAID THEY DO NOT NEED THEM.

Romney hired 17 of 24 of his advisors from the Bush / Cheney regime.....you want more years from that failed team? Bush/Cheney/Romney/Ryan for a worse tomorrow today!

Big oil deliberately does not build new refineries in U.S. so it can keep prices high every time something happens to one, maintenance, breakdowns etc. Simply shutting one down for maintenance cause big oil to raise prices even though the amount of oil does not affect short term anything.

REPUBS BLOCKED BILL TO END OIL SPECULATORS WHICH DRIVE UP THE COST OF OIL AND OUR GAS PRICES. WHY? GREEDY WALLSTREETERS DOING THE SAME AS THEY DID TO THE ECONOMY CRASH. Wallstreeters want your money . All they do is click the mouse and make money from oil speculation. Repubs want to do the same with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Post Office.

None of you guys ever answer this basic question! Is Romney going to mandate the USA be well supplied prior to Oil hitting global exchanges? Otherwise its just talk, there is plenty of Oil on the Market now, but futures and hedging keep supply tight at the benefit of Oil Companies and Traders. So magically they are going to glut the Market so we can have cheap gas? Just more red herring garbage for the polarized Sheep! Nothing to see here, move on!

We have a President Obama who screams over Romney not releasing more than two years tax returns and all the tax returns as Governor; while Obama has spent millions in attorney fees sealing and hiding away every personal, educational, political and travel record not only for himself, but his mother as well.

Ronzwyf, this Drudge/Breitbart nonsense was debunked years ago. If you want to be taken seriously, you really shouldn't parrot crap light this. However, since you brought it up, what in the world do you want to know about Obama's mother? Jeez, you people are so pathetic.

Down to basic common sense till something better comes along we need to use what we know works, and what we can afford unfortunately that means for now fossil fuels, green has a high price tag and it does not work, and in its present state never will, China has green and they still have a high demand for oil, Europe has green and face it they are going broke and still need oil, Obama is trying to sell a dead horse and some people want to buy it, it only looks like a horse. this country has been run like a two bit gypsy law firm long enough, our president is a finger pointing paper hanging soa# and we know damn little about this man and his past secret life that he goes to extremes to keep hidden from us, we need a business man and Romney is that and a good one, I don't care about his tax returns if he does well then more power to him the IRS isn't after him so let it be, if he can start us on the course to recover then that is what we need. and Obama and his team have failed grossly at that challenge. besides the ME is about to explode and there is no stopping it we need that oil. Obama will sink us. he does not prepare for the worst, the worst is right around the corner, solar and wind will not support our needs, solar and wind will not keep trucks and trains running, solar and wind will not keep your house warm any more then recycled black water is fit to drink. till the transition is feasible and profitable we have no choice, jumping before we are ready will lead to disaster.

Obamas policy is the socialist method of trying to inflate their way out of debt and that will only lead to the destabilization of the dollar and the collapse of the economy. we are on a very bad course we can't continue to go this way, we will fall off the cliff.

Romney knows how to get us out of this mess.

Romney cannot lift America out of her economic mess.

Mitt embraces the failed GOP policies that put this country in her financial mess.

                              I trust him.

You cannot trust a man who will not release his taxes.

Obama on the other hand, knows absolutely nothing.

Obama saved the banking industry and spared this country a total financial collapse. When Romney turned his back on our auto industry, Obama saved the auto industry. Our president is responsible for millions of our citizens now having access to health care.

This ain't a student council election

                              Agreed.

Electing the president of the United States is serious business. This is why voters should not vote for Romney and Ryan.

We are talking about saving America.

                              Absolutely.

It is time to throw out the failed right-wing policies!

Lets vote for Obama so that he will be our 44th and 45th president. He will continue to move America forward.

Vote as if your life depends on it!

Your above statement is why Obama is ahead of Romney in many political polls.

Big oil deliberately does not build new refineries in U.S. so it can keep prices high every time something happens to one, maintenance, breakdowns etc. Simply shutting one down for maintenance cause big oil to raise prices even though the amount of oil does not affect short term anything.

Consumption has jumped 24 % since 1990. There aren't enough domestic refineries to do the job. As a result, the amount of gas that's imported is about 10 % today.
Insufficient inventories of domestically refined gasoline contribute to high prices and spark fears about gas shortages, as they did earlier. Refining makes up roughly 14 % of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, and in recent weeks gas prices reached record highs. Because demand for gasoline is greater than what the refineries can produce in many cases, refineries can charge more for gasoline.

The soaring gas costs are bringing more attention to the limited refining capacity in the United States. The number of domestic refineries is declining. In 1980, there were more than 300 US refineries. At the end of 2003, there were 149, roughly a 50 % decrease. Some are running at close to 100 % of their capacity just to keep pace with demand, so it's tough to further boost production.
The chance of new ones being built is slim. The last major US oil refinery was built in 1976, and stringent pollution controls and the overall public distaste for refineries make it nearly impossible for oil companies to build more, oil experts say.
"No one wants one," said Anthony Sabino, associate business professor at St John's University in New York. "Building a refinery is very expensive. It's a multibillion-dollar proposition."

Even a smaller-scale refinery could cost at least $ 1 bn to build, said James Nelson, a division manager at Marathon Ashland Petroleum's Detroit refinery, the only refinery left in Michigan. And due to changing clean-air rules for refineries, it costs millions to maintain the operations, experts say.
In the last 10 years, US refiners have invested about $ 47 bn in environmental improvements for their facilities, much of that to make cleaner fuels. Recently, refiners have invested millions to make cleaner, low-sulphur fuels for the environment.

But even before the idea of building a new refinery leaves the gate, it's faced with opposition from consumers and environmentalists. They're considered eyesores, so no one wants one in the neighbourhood. It's difficult for oil companies to get the environmental permits to build. Smaller refineries have a tough time thriving because they just don't produce enough fuel to offset their operating costs, and experts say that's why so many refineries have shut down over the years

Vote Obama/Biden stop oil speculators from ripping us off

Obama in 4 years have done nothing to stop speculators and he WON'T , because government make more money when the price of gas is higher. Oil companies makes 8 cents per gallon in profit, Government rake up to 48 cents a gallon. Get your facts straight.

Geothermal energy works well in individual homes with some access to groundwater. It cost $20,000 to $30,000 to retrofit a home with it. The people I know who have invested in it, say it has greatly reduced their home heating bill here in PA. Geothermal needs to be installed properly or it could hurt the groudwater we use to drink.

In PA, we have mostly rural areas without gaslines to make use of all that gas the gas companies are fracking their way to. A local Republican County commissioner suggested passing a severance tax on this natural gas extraction like Texas has and using some of the proceeds to extend gas pipelines to small towns and villages throughout PA. I think that would be a good idea, but our Republican Governor opposes any severance tax on natural gas. Corbett gets lots of campaign dough from gas companies though.

@Starfalling ops I mean sailing, Obama wants the price of oil high, its his best source of revenue, did you know about 48% of the price you pay at the pump goes to the government, so the higher the price at the pump the more money Obama gets to give away, now did Obama forget to inform you of that, I got this information right here on MSN where did your info come from. and that does not include the tax at the pump. its true the oil companies pay between 43% to 48% to good old uncle Sam. Obama has done nothing to regulate the price of oil and he has let it run out of control, just like he does with everything. what ever it is you put in your pipe today is causing more drifting then sailing.

The Federal gasoline tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. When price of gas goes up and people buy less gasoline, federal gasoline tax revenues actually go down. Check your facts before making such wild accusations.

If you include state taxes and local taxes with the federal gasoline tax, the average tax nationwide is 48.8 cents per gallon, not 48%.

Whatever taxes the oil companies pay on their profits, it is paid on only what is left of their total revenues in the USA after deducting all their USA costs and USA overhead. They also get big tax breaks, so I am sure you are way off base in your gasoline tax analysis.

as far as my money going to China for my bike... good! show me a bike made in the USA for the same price, and as good ill buy it, GOOD F'ING LUCK! and you can thank your entitlements for this. at the same time, it falls into the same principal when selling anything from oil-bikes-autos-food.

Its a bold plan that will generate many jobs making us less dependent on oil from countries that, in essence, hate us -- which should allow us to be able to stop having to micro manage and protect middle east countries and middle east oil. Lets face it we really wouldn't be over there if it wasn't for our dependence on oil...

Further, more jobs, better economy and in a better economy, private equity and entreprenurial spirit will develop alternative energy much faster and more effeciently than government funded inititives... Where there is opportunity, a good entreprenuer will find a way to develop it because its what we do!!!

I don't know about most people but I would sincerely like to cut ties with middle east countries insofar as we are subject to and dependent upon their Oil Cartels....

Sorry deft one .. how so? How many jobs will be saved. Do our cars run on natural gas? Do our products rely upon natural gas? Obama has long been a natural gas proponent, and it is an excellent alternative to oil, but Romney's plan doesn't change the fact that we rely upon oil for almost all our products. Tell me how you envision natural gas replacing oil to make our plastic products. Or better yet, through your infinite vision, how fracking is environmentally sound? One thing is for sure, the minute you feel an earthquake, your pissy whiny ass will be screaming stop natural gas exploitation.

Dan: Sorry you whiffed another one. Natural gas drill has proceeded. The main thing wrong is the back room, closed door that Cheney made with his buddies that relieved them of all liability and most provisions of the EPA. That is why natural gas drilling is causing earth quakes, the disruption of towns and lives. Get YOUR facts straight and you won't post as many silly things.

                                  Mr Daniel Streibig,

Let me ask you a few questions if I may.

How long do you think the Oil, Gas and Coal will last??

It doesn't matter really as it will most likely last longer than either of us will live.. however, you do know it will run out at some point, don't you?

You do realize that regardless of how much more we increase the exploitation of our untapped resources, our costs (what we pay), will not drop?

You do understand that the time frame of 2020 is convenient to an 8 year term and has already been debunked as being not possible.

Your are aware that Large Refineries are actually closing with no new facilities scheduled to go online anytime soon making any increase in production all but useless (see recent HESS announcement)>

You fail to be aware that this is old GOP propaganda.. because you clearly have bought in...

Shifting these responsibilities to the States is nothing more than punting... Shifting Gov Costs downstream will only add to the growing burden the States have and will endure currently and in the future.,,,

The GOP vision to shrink one Government (Federal) only to force the expansion of another (State and Local) only further places IN YOUR FACE, the Government most likely to cause serious harm to you in a direct and profound manner., Is short sighted and dangerous, and yet, for someone that spews the need to be well informed, you don't seem to be as such..

It will last long enough to find a viable alternative that doesn't need the government training wheels to keep it going.

Many estimates have our current usage rate lasting for over 200 years. I think we will be fine.

Just a follow up to my post...

Fossil fuels will last only until we perfect our use of hydrogen fuels. BMW has the engine and the technology to store liquid hydrogen in vehicles in its cooled state. Now who would you rather count on to get this technology developed and distributed in the most efficient and timely way. Washington and our incredibly slow and ineffective government or us greedy private sector capitalists?

Here's a hint... Those guys in Washington, they have big salaries, and a pension and health care for life... And I can guarantee you that they will never run out of gas... So where is their motivation to get anything done... We have a government full of politicians so busy trying to keep their jobs that they don't care about doing their jobs...

If you want to count on them and their gridlock, go ahead and place your faith in a Government that has clearly come to the conclusion that we the governed can't do anything without it. Or you can get on board with Romney and get this economy jump started again so the private sector can afford to get back to innovating and solving the technical issues to developing and implementing alternative energy the good old fashioned way with good old greedy private sector capitalism! Where there's a problem to be resolved, we greedy innovative capitalists see an opportunity to make a buck...

I'm and Inventor by trade and I have a knack for it, but I wouldn't have ever taken the risks that I have, had there not been the possibility of reaping a big pot of gold at the end of the development!

Trust in capitalism! It has been what has paid this country's bills for over 200 years!!!!

I get so tired of repeating myself.....I do not know what to say except that the middle class wealth and disposable income was virtually destroyed in 08'. Do you understand repair comes from paying down the middle class debt in order for spending to begin? Blame whomever you would like this was due to the de-regulation of the banking system and lack of oversight for the PMI insurer. Million and Billionaires weren't flipping houses at this time so the middle class got stuck holding the bag. All Romney is, is talk.....the keystone pipeline creates only temporary jobs....Once the pipeline is all set up....what then? And the seven sisters will continue raking in the largest profits they ever have....What jobs are they going to create? Have you read Ryan's plan? I have and it reeks of the dismantling of medicare, Medicaid and social security benefits.....Cuts corporate taxes by ten percent and the rich to 20% with tax to the middle class and working poor of over 30%. These supply side economics would only work if the US was a manufacturing powerhouse and at the same time would erode at manufacturing capacity overtime in the name of profits or decrease the lifestyle of our middle class and working poor......Using these economic concepts, proven in history, not to work...i.e. as in sighting the "job creators" to go on a hiring frenzy. You are a clown and what you are preaching makes no sense on any moral and economical foundation.

And liberal lies strike again. It was Obama that stole $500,000,000,000 from Medicare to fund his abomination. Liberals want to let all social programs go bankrupt, that way they won't have to do anything to jeopardize votes. Republicans are actually trying to save these programs.

The US has over 400 years of reserves, Canada over 100 years. We will have transitioned over to electric and hydrogen vehicles in a couple of decades. Again, we need to drill like mad now to keep costs down while we transition. Exxon, Shell, etc. are also working on bio fuels, only someone really stupid would think those companies would just dry up and blow away when the wells run dry.

Shrinking federal power is always a good think, it is becoming more and more fascist withe each new law, each new executive order, each new regulation. NDAA anyone? The more local you can control things the more say the individual has.

Liberals clamoring for more and more federal power only reinforces the fact they are fascists at heart.

Elliot, you are right, there is enough oil to last at least 100 or maybe 200 more years. But, the neo-cons are not telling you the whole story. Due to the difficulty inextracting the remaining 70% of the oil in a well (it has to be removed by a different method than the first 30%) the cost is 3-4 times more. So that oil you buy would cost in today's market about 8-12 per gallon. The oil companies want to keep you from developing any new sources of energy so one day (sometime between 2025-2050 depending on how much demand from China and other countries increases) you will be forced to buy their oil at 4x the price you are paying now. It's all about profits in the world today.

Daniel - The problem with your theory is that as long as "BIG OIL" Coal and other are in control and have those "representatives" in their pockets, there won't be any "innovation" or "technology" advancements that will occur as it would hurt their business and profits. Think about it, they have the technology to update and advance their refining process but they refuse to pay the money to do it as there's less bonus money for those CEO's and CFO's. BUT that's why they were given the government subsidies (i.e. taxpayer money) for those upgrades.

To be fair, I would LOVE to know what Romney plans on doing in trying to get the economy going again. So far all I've heard where the same principles that GWB instituted which drove the country in the ground in the first place. There's a report out that states that for the last 10 years, the middle class has shrunk and is a dying breed. All the money is going to either the rich and powerful (those that are spending the most money against the President ironically), big banks and corporations, and whose stuck paying the bill? If he can "promise" the American people that he will do what's right for "America" instead of what right for those he's help make rich while at Bain(using it as an example), I'm all for it and will vote for him in a heartbeat BUT he's not saying that. In fact, he's not saying anything but giving generalizations. As an independent and military veteran, I have doubts and NO, I don't listen to what the "latest media" is, I listen to the candidates and what they say.

Me personally, I can't vote for someone that won't take a FIRM position on an issue and not waver everytime they change "crowds". If you want my vote, stand firm behind a position and defend it to the end and not waver when someone tells you too......Tells me you have no spine.....

Like stealing from seniors for all generations to come?

Considering the debt, the current and previous generations ran out of money 15 trillion dollars ago. Nobody asked my generation if we want to pay for thier mistakes. So calling someone a thief when everyone is currently stealing from future generations is hypocritical.

like cutting off health care to millions

health care is still there, how you acquire it is what will change

and then lying about Obama "gutting" Medicare?

After the ACA was passed The President went on TV and said it was necessary that the money be used to implement the ACA but that it would be irrelevent because of the savings created by the ACA. So yes, he did take the money from Medicare and is gambling 700 billion on a law no one read before it was passed.

                                    Bold like bullying,

Kind of like bullying a Senator from your own party to support a law by saying the White House will back another primary challenger if they don't. How is Senator Nelson doing these days? Haven't heard much from him since the ACA was passed, oh except when he said that he is retiring.

                                    lying,

"I'll have the most transparent administration in history!"

                                    bankrupting,

Giving billions of dollars of someone else's money to companies that support your agenda only to have them file for bankruptcy after using the money

                                    destroying evidence,

Or using executive privilage to hide evidence that might implicate you or the AG in a gun running scam that got a border patrol agent killed.

                                    committing voter fraud

I've yet to hear that ACORN, or whatever they are calling themselves now, has decided to work for the republicans.

                                    Peter,

The unregulated "free market" caused the great depression....So before you start saying capitalism has paid the bills for 200 years you might want to understand how our capitalist society works now and how it use to work....That way, you can understand why these regulations have been put into place......Your comment is grossly negligent, very general and might convince someone not as educated in current affairs and economic history to be mislead.

If not from private sector business and capitalism, where would you propose that the Federal Government obtain it's funding from? In fact, where does, and where has Government obtained it's operating income for the past 200 years? I only ask this question because this next year, according to the CBO, we will be spending $1.1 trillion more than we take in. Sure you can tax the top 1 percent like Obama has proposed, but that additional revenue will only cover about 7% of the shortfall and the national debt will climb to a whopping $17.3 trillion.

Do you have any clue what will happen to this country if we get to a point that we have borrowed so much money that we are no longer credit worthy? Do you have any idea what happens to this country if the dollar becomes so weak that it no longer can maintain its position as the world reserve currency? A quick answer is that the currency inflates exponentially and the entire economy collapses!

I'm sorry to break this to you Peter, but the Federal Government does not create wealth. The Federal Government is not designed to generate profits and it never has generated profits! Ultimately, without private sector capitalism the , the Federal Government wouldn't have any operating funds whatsoever(other than the dollars they print and borrow).

Should they just print up money? If you are one of those that believes that government creates wealth, then why not just turn Obama loose with the printing presses and issue an executive order for the U.S. Mint to print up $20 trillion or so and pay off our national debt? Sound silly? I hope it does.

In the absence of an alternative solution as to who and how we dig ourselves out of this financial grave we're digging for ourselves, I'm going to stick with the the plan that the private sector and capitalism will ultimately be the vehicle that picks up this tab. And in return, we should be justly and handsomely rewarded for our role. Government? What does this administration know about turning a profit other than how to villify and tax those of us who have the expertise, initiative and balls to embark upon such ventures.

We would prefer you all would just say thank you and get out of our way and allow us to get to saving this country from the anarchy and mayhem that would result from a total collapse of our economy...

As to your post, to the contrary my friend, it is your critique that demonstrates the deficit when it comes to a grasp of fundamental economic principles of capitalism.

Once again you said everything and it is TRUE! You forgot one thing though.....Inflation....Which is happening at a slow pace. NOW DO I HAVE TO WRITE IT IN CRAYON FOR YOU! If you think everything is status quo at all times in life "never changing" then you are a moron. Inflation highly favors a large debt scenerio......So there you go.....higher than average inflation...but not so high to make it too grueling on everyone (cause we are all paying for it)....That's one smart man......Now your idiot option of letting the free market reign....would have caused instant inflation and lots and lots of poor people and a lot of car building people with nothing to do....very poor people until wages are corrected, if they have a job(remember Jimmy C...painful correction) .....So what i'm trying to tell you is that I think you are mildly retarded in this area and the reason why we haven't seen any feasible economic plan from either side is because they both know the only option is a bad or a really bad economic future......So they both push the other guy as "really bad" without saying it.....I understand what is happening and why.......Personally I think you should get on your knees and pray to whatever God you believe in that we don't have 30+% unemployment and that your idiot children are starving in the street....Just my view...just sayin....

The Obama administration paid a PR firm nearly $500,000 in stimulus funds to run a barrage of ads on White House-friendly cable programs promoting its green job training program.

According to government records, the Labor Department paid the money in late 2009 to a company that negotiated a media buy on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show." The ad was set to run more than 100 times -- 14 times a week for two months.

I have read it. I agree that energy policy that continues reliance is absolutely backward and insane. Continuing oil company subsidies and tax breaks is profoundly unproductive for a number of reasons.Romney's friends and financial support from the oil industry is really showing here.

I have read it. I agree with many people in that an energy policy that relies on fossil fuels, ignores non-fossil fuels, takes subsidies away from non-fossil fuels and preserves the subsidies for the oil industry, is incredibly backward and unproductive for a whole host of reasons. Romney should lose the election on this issue alone.

well, just dig that coal, and spew that poison in the air and pump that oil!!!! alaska preserve be damned!!!! who needs polar bears and seals and all those other pesky animals that God MUST have put here to test us to see how fast we could kill them all for our own best interests! kill and drill !!!! kill and drill!!! and so what is every kid in america ends up with asthma, the strong will survive and if you're rich you'll be able to get a nice fancy gas mask in the future to match your new ipod! and the rest of the people? well, they'll be too busy working in the coal mines and cotton fields to worry about breathing. ah, heck, eventually all 'those people' will get used to the dirty air and poison water and so what if your kids think that whales are a myth, we need OIL!!! OIL!!!!! give me OIL!!!!

this has nothing to do with you claiming that the liberal left are parrots. your lack of insight is mind boggling. this has to do with being informed about the facts of where we stand in oil and coal and what it is doing to our planet, the animals we share it with and our descendents. but, then, i guess, when you adhere to the 'every man for himself' mantra of the radical right, you don't think about things that don't immediately effect you. it might surprise you to know that those of us who ARE informed have been that way for some time now, not just since obama was elected. i learned to read and comprehend many, many years ago, and i don't need now, nor did i ever need some politician to explain to me the science that is our planet and how the ONLY thing on this planet that does NOT work in perfect harmony with everything else, is us. every animal, every planet works in perfect harmony; the fist feed off the plankton, bigger fist feed off of smaller, land animals feed off the fish, bigger animals feed off the smaller up the food chain. plants serve the purpose of creating oxygen, and food and in turn, grow and spread-everything in harmony. Except humans. we destroy everything we touch, we dig up the ground, we burn down the forests, we kill the animals and take their land. if God does have a plan, maybe it is to see if we will ever learn to live in harmony with the earth, like everything else. it's possible, many generations of people lived off the land for thousands of years. but, as time has gone by, our arrogance and greed has overwhelmed any sense to doing the right, honest and honorable thing. i wonder how many of you know that there are ways to grow crops using very little water and even smaller amounts of land. how many of you know that they are testing right now, batteries and solar cells that can be sprayed on and work anywhere. how many of you know that they are developing right now, flexible solar panels and will be easy to install, cheap to manufacture and could easily help provide almost all the energy we need? there is so much technology out there that would allow us to have what we want and still live in harmony with the earth, BUT, it will take time and of course money to create the infrastructure needed. and THAT is the rub. the corporations don't want those advances, they want their money and they want it now!!! and they don't want a populace that is free of disease, intelligent and free thinking. they want ignorant, indentured servants that will be willing to serve their masters without question. problem is, it will never happen, because you can't shackle people forever and at some point the average person, the people will rebel, just like they have done a thousand times before. ya'll should read your history. people never rebelled when their stomachs were full, but rather when they were empty. they didn't rebel when they were heard, but when they were ignored.

i feel sorry, not for you-if you die of some future incarnation of a respiratory illness due to pollution, so be it. i feel sorry for your children, your grandchildren and children yet unborn who will be subjected to the greed of the radical right. that's what it is, of course. this isn't about caring about people, their livelihoods or futures, it's about HOW MUCH MONEY CAN WE MAKE RIGHT NOW!!!!

you know, i wish some times that God WAS some guy sitting on a cloud somewhere looking down at us with a septor in his hand ready to strike people dead for being evil. we probably wouldn't have a population problem on this planet. i'd guess he'd be pointing that thunderbolt at us before he'd point it at that polar bear. unfortunately, the world is NOT coming to and end and the end of this year, Jesus is NOT returning to take the righteous to heaven. if He were, i truly believe there would be a whole lot of very surprised and disappointed right wing religious zealots out there.

More liberal lies. The free market is transitioning us off of coal, natural gas is much cheaper and power plants are converting over already. It's Obama that keeps touting clean coal, I've heard him on numerous occasions. Almost word for word, "Clean coal must remain a substantial contributor to our future energy needs."

Again solar and wind do NOT compete with oil. We cannot be energy independent with wind and solar. Since liberals are too stupid to understand this, the only conclusion one can come to is they are parroting what they are told. If they had a brain they wouldn't be spewing such nonsense.

Vahalla - You are absolutely right, wind and solar can't compete with oil. Here's where you are missing the picture. Big oil is enjoying records profits and we are producing more than we have in 3 years so why are we still subsiding them with taxpayer money? They don't need our money when they are bringing in 3-4 billion a quarter YET we give them money for R&D and what do we get out of the deal? Higher gas prices.....Then people like you want to blame the President for the gas prices when you know he has nothing to do with it. All he can do is ask congress to release oil in reserves (which they have to approve) to help alleviate some of the pain we have at the pump.

You claim you want independence but cry that we don't have enough oil when the truth is we ship more oil overseas than we keep for ourselves, paying MORE to bring oil in than we do to ship it out. Yet you want to fight and drill for more oil. We drill and export more oil than we need. Think about it. Look at the numbers and you will see that. I don't like to call people names but you are an oxymoron in claiming people are "parroting what they are told" when you are doing the exact same thing.

It's time we all wake up and look at the real picture and stop letting those with all the money dictate our lives........

Our Prez has been and is working towards bringing all sides together and he's having difficulty reaching those that can't jump into today's reality. In spite of the insults and degradation on him personally from that other side, he pays no mind to pettiness, just keeps plugging away. The President's next four years will continue the upward swing in the jobs market, a better educational path and hopefully a Congress that will work with the President for Americans.

This energy policy is from the 1950's....major reliance on fossil fuels? Are the Republicans really serious? Fossil fuels will work short-term but as President Obama and credible scientists have been saying, we need to plan for a future when fossil fuels are largely gone. President Obama is not anti-oil or anti-coal...he is anti-short-sighted. Unless we committ major resources to renewable energy now, we will be left in the dust on both the economic and national security fronts. All Romney and the Republicans have done with this "new" policy is give the coal and oil companies exactly what they want: no regulations, drill baby drill, and continued subsidies and tax breaks while they rake in huge profits. The Republicans are as smart on energy policy as they are on women's health.

Have you got a solar powered car yet? When is he going to start mass producing those. Is you electricy coming from a power line attached to your house? Huuum Wonder how that electricy is Made... Oil, Coal maybe even Nuke...

Will he be sending around the Light Bulb Police soon, to take away all our light bulbs so we use less electricty?

Tell what his plan is, it is sounds do able then I would agree with it, but until such time as that happens, we are (Us as a Nation) are still going to need these fuels.

P.S. And how do you KNOW what Romeny wants to do? Did he call you up and tell you himself.

No kidding, Romney is about getting profit now which can be done with drill drill drill. Romney is not looking to the future except in a short sighted limited way. His short sighted limited view of the future is evident in his not supporting wind and solar. It's probably because wind and solar stand to be too successful and might cut into big oil profits too much if wind and solar are fully developed.

Oh, and the reason why everybody is not driving a solar powered car is because fossil fuel is just too profitable....besides many politicians including Romney and W are in bed with the oil companies and Romney's lack of support for wind and solar is proof of this. If you wonder why we don't have solar powered cars look to Romney's policy for your answer.

These energy policies need to address the problem of global warming. I think the midwest would rather have rain right now instead of co2. Wind and solar energy may not be the most profitable, but at least they are clean. I think clean energy is what we need now and a long term plan on how to deal with the effects of climate change.

Sonia, Well said ... Coal, gas and oil are very important to our energy supply but there have to be some controls on the way some fossil fuels are used, especially the need for scrubbers on the coal-fired electric power plants to minimize air and environmental pollution or we'll end up with the atmosphere that they breathe in China. The coal and oil companies can not be given a carte' blanche proviso to burn fuels at will simply to enhance their bottom line. Hopefully there can be an intelligent balance between all of the energy supply systems, including green energy, and protection of the public's health.

                                      Peace

Socialism and union thuggery from the 50's, major reliance on big brother, are democrats serious?

We need cheap energy to get our economy growing so we can afford to transition to electric and hydrogen cars. Only then will wind and solar make an impact. We have to criminalize fiasco's like Solyndra, using taxpayer dollars to laundered through campaign donor companies to fund Obama and co. That is NOT going backward.

You people are idiots. First of all old ideas of the past? Socialist economies.. are those new ideas? Global warming... is that a new idea? Now im going to list a few facts not that you will listen to them though. Global warming discusses an overall shift in climate in fractions of degrees it has nothing to do with an august day in which it is hot outside. ABSOLUTELY nothing. even your idiot leaders do not believe that. Please quit making yourselves sound even more ridiculous. It also has been proven to have nothing to do with the effect of our rain patterns hurricanes tornados any of that. Again that is something that you make up very much like akins did about abortion because in your small heads it sounds rational. I dont know that ive ever even heard a scientist say that this was affected. There was a study in florida for a very long time that tried to link hurricane activity to global warming and failed. The 2 leading scientist in the country studying that stepped down to quote "lack of evidence". The temperature of the earth has not shifted since the year 2000. The hottest year on record was 1936. There have been worse droughts than this year. Believe it or not and this years has absolutely nothing to do with global warming. Besides i thought that this was supposed to be better since the elect of obama? Do NOT blame republicans because democrats have had a majority power over the government since 2006. Also the first story of "climate change" came around the time of 1896. Where there were hardly ANY H2 hummers. Just sayin. Also what are your better ideas. We are dependent on oil period! no matter where it comes from. It is the most effective means of energy that has ever been found. I (as a conservative) do believe that it is important that we find other sources. That will not be done by gov forcing it down our throat. That will come when someone invents a needed and succesful form of energy in the FREE MARKET. There will be a demand for it and someone will make it. These other ideas are bogus. Wind power is a joke as is solar. There is no demand for it and the market has proven it. If more of you liberals would practice what you preach it would have a market. It does not! Please feel free to quit using my oil though. Since its so terrible and unnecessary. Wed solve alot of problems if liberal idiots would simply quit using oil instead of just posting MSN comments about how the world is ending if we dont stop. BTW your electric cars. the production of those batteries cause more polution and Co2 in the air than a H2 Hummer over the course of a 100k miles ususally you will have to replace it at least once over the life of the car. So your prius polutes more than an SUV by more than double. Again feel free to ignore what i just said because you guys dont care about facts only what you read on this mornings blog while smoking your morning doob. Get a life and become adults already.

@ireply FACT!!! neither bush or cheney are billionaires. Not even close. By 100's of millions in fact. another FACT. the Ryan medicare plan has absolutely no effect on ANYONE that is over the age of 55 currently. THEN when those under 55 come around they will have a choice. They can stay on the plan or receive a voucher to invets the money themselves. IT DOES though work to get rid of social security and medicare because they are failed and bankrupt systems. Have you ever heard of Greece? Look what happened to them. They were a model for what we are doing. We can no longer afford it. Learn your facts, do not just ramble talking points and sound stupid. Try reading paul ryans plan instead of just assuming that rachel maddow wouldnt possibly exagerate facts because she hates republicans. Im so sick of defending pointless arguments with you liberals. You cannot win an argument with a stupid person who thinks they know more than everyone because they saw a cool bumper sticker

Jason G- Carter- No the Dems did not have control over congress since 2006. That is a lie. The Republicans controlled the House until a scandal among a few of their party members caused them to resigned in 2008. After that the Dems had control up until 2010 when republicans regained their power and took back control of the house by getting the exact number of votes needed to regain their majority in the House. So if you would have said since 2008 your argument would have been legit.

HELLOO? Anybody home? You seem to be living in DENIAL. Look around you. Do you really think that all those environmental facts: Fires, drought, melting of the ice caps, accelerating of the CO2 in the atmosphere is the result of NATURAL CAUSES?

SOME OF IT IS, BUT YOU NEED TO EDUCATE YOURSELF. You can't go against scientist around the world, just because you INSIST in calling everybody IDIOTS for telling that the Republicans are lying.

Jason...you are clueless about the voucher plan. Divide and conquer is repub plan. Why do you think repubs split the ages into two damned groups if voucher plan was so good? BECAUSE IT IS NO GOOD! The voucher plan does NOT give enough money to pay expenses worth a crap! Falls way short. When you divide the number of people in the pool in two as Newt said back in 1995 the higher age section withers on the vine and dies because you need the wider range of ages to fund healthcare at a cheaper low price for everyone. Privatization of healthcare is FOR PROFIT! 25-30% and more has been going for profit.....WASTE in otherwords. CEO making hundreds of millions taking the profits out of system each year. Under ACA the exspenses stays under certain percentage on costs cutting waste.

Jason you are totally ignorant on Social Security. Repubs want tp privatize everything because they want Soc Sec killed so people will use that money investing in the stock markets.....How did that go under BUSH HUH? Millions lost their pensions in the stock market crash......Had Bush jr privatized S.S. the people who would be looking for their retirement would be homeless.

Jason, eat your breaksfast, brush your teeth, wash behind your ears and go out to play. Be careful crossing streets.

What is the liberals energy plan again? Oh yeah, they have none. Obama and his liberal legions have failed this country on energy. We have 4.00 a gallon gas, and heating oil in the Northeast is already at 3.50 a gallon. People are going to be hemorrhaging money this winter trying to heat their homes. There is not one single "green" energy plan that is either cost effective or viable for the masses at this time. But Obama is certainly not concerned with the rising costs associated with our lack of an energy policy, so just how long is the country supposed to bleed waiting for a day that might come when a new green energy source is available?

President Obama is not anti-oil or anti-coal...he is anti-short-sighted.

For Sonia: No he isn't anti-oil or anti-coal, he is only anti American drilling for it. He has given millions to Brazil and Mexico to drill for oil. What he is doing is taking American wealth out of America and spreading it around. That was one of his campaign promises remember? His goal is to make America poorer. To punish the Colonialist nation. We need to be dependent on ourselves and not give our oil money to countries in the middle east who hate America and want us gone. Green energy is to expensive right now and not practical because the bugs haven't been worked out yet so we need energy to use until we get to the point where green energy is cheap. The middle class and the poor cannot afford green energy now, it's only the wealthy elected elite in this country who are pushing this on us who can afford it.

Concerning oil company subsidies...if the Democrats truly wanted to end those tax breaks, they could have done so when they had the house and a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate (yes, I'm including the 2 independents that caucus with the Dems). But, they didn't because they also support the subsidies - and railing against oil companies is a great political card they can pull on the campaign trail to rally their base.

Don't just listen to what politicians say, also watch what they do when given the opportunity.

                                        Jason,

If the voucher plan was even close to a functional plan why then exclude people over 55 keeping them under currant care? OOH that right because in reality the vouchers are really about as use full as the coupons you get in the mail on Saturday. Sure may help a little but most is junk.

Same as this plan to expand oil in the states. Its not much of a viable plan. It would be a minimal 5 years before another plant would come on line so your plan for the future is just more oil. Simply discarding technology alternative is reckless.

Jason, you said look at Greece.

Well, yes let us look at Greece. The austerity measures that were tried in Greece are the same ones being pushed by the republicans. You can't cut cut cut and expect the economy to survive let alone grow.

How about we look at Iceland. They jailed the bankers, forgave mortgages and their economy is doing better than most. They have growth and unemployment is down.

                                        upworthy.com/bail-out-the-bankers-iceland-arrested-them-and-look-what-happened?g=2&c=o98

Thanks in good part to this tempered approach to debt write-down Iceland's economy is now growing faster than most countries in Europe, and unemployment is less than 5% (having hit 9.3% in early 2010).

                                        guardian.co.uk/business/economics-blog/2012/aug/21/iceland-debt-relief-lessons-eurozone

The supply-side economist Arthur Laffer assured the Icelandic business community in 2007 that fast economic growth with a large trade deficit and ballooning foreign debt were signs of success

If you don't want to end up like Greece, why would you vote for republicans?

Actually, Greece hasn't cut their spending - they reduced the budgeted increases. Also, Greece was in far worse shape than any other European economy when things started to go bad.

I'm fine with attacking some of the Republican policies (there are plenty I disagree with), but the problem I see is, the Democrats seem to have their heads in the sand when it comes to deficits and the debt.

Check who was involved in the company, (hint; major campaign donors).

We will all be saved by the green energy initiatives of the Obama administration, whether we like it or not. So when can we expect a green energy solution to replace gasoline? Or heating oil? Or should I be asking what decade, or which century? 4.00 a gallon gasoline and the prospect of paying 800.00 to a 1000.00 to heat homes this winter should do wonders for the Obama campaign this fall. So what if none of the Obama green energy initiatives have panned out, he is not giving up even if no one can afford to drive or heat their homes for decades to come. Which by the way, will be yet another dent in federal revenue as the taxes on petroleum plunge. Should do wonders for the economy.

Take the initiative and get your house some solar panels then you can afford the gas that the Kock Bros want to sell you or the coal for cars, or natural gas that they're drilling for, of course that's if all this fracking doesn't break the crust of the earth like in the movie 2012.

Oil prices plummeted at the end of Bushs term because we were losing 760,000 jobs a month and people were buying far less gas. It will increase in price as the economy recovers and we drive more. China is the biggest driver in oil prices because they're increasing their consumption several million barrels a day every year. Oil is a global commodity and whether it's produced here or elsewhere if production doesn't keep up with demand prices will increase. We should increase domestic production to lower our trade deficit but it won't make much of a difference in price. Obamas policies haven't been overly restrictive, republicans tried to force the pipeline issue with a 60 day deadline when environmental issues hadn't been resolved and states were protesting the route. It was nothing but a political ploy by republicans. Most democrats would approve the pipeline if/when routes were approved by the states affected and environmental impact studies were done. It couldn't be done in 60 days.

Tell that to the people in Corpus Christi who are getting leukemia from the benzene released into the water and the environment by the Citgo refinery. Some of you seem to think that letting the state of Texas, who is run by oil millionaires, be responsible for the regulation of the oil industry is a good thing. When the children, who live in these areas where the refineries become sick and some die from the carcinogens that the refineries put into the water and air and soil, due to lax regulation by oil owned state officials, will it bother you much? Is profit and greed all there is in life that has value?

Will the price of gas come down or are these new plans for the oil industry just designed to save them money and for them to make more profit because they could get away with doing it at the expense of our nation environment and health?

Well-said, Jennifer. Look how gas companies are making record profits. They need no help from the government, but they certainly do need to be regulated. We recently felt earthquakes here in north Texas from ones happening in the OKC area--from natural gas fracking operations. Fuel is necessary, yet we must protect our environment and quality of life!

Since we are not driving our cars on green energy or heating our homes with such, then any reduction for industry support from the government will just drive up prices for gas and heating oil even further. I know this is a difficult concept for liberals, but if you make it cost the industry more, they will pass that cost onto consumers. So 4.00 gas becomes 4.50, and 3.50 for heating oil becomes 4.00. But at least we won't be subsidizing those evil oil companies, which by the way will still be making exactly the same profits as you pay even more. Maybe there are some more green energy initiatives we can rush to fund so they don't go out of business broke. Liberals have no energy plan, and no clue what this is going to do to the masses. Not to mention it is going to be the poor and the middle class that gets hammered by these skyrocketing prices.

Well, Rick, then how about a push for green energy, in the form of continued subsidies? Take it from the oil companies, and sure they'll chase their bottom line by increasing prices for the consumer - but at the same time the consumer will get breaks elsewhere on non-auto energy use. There will be an overlap. No one living in a crappy 1920s home in low income areas will make the conversion to solar, for example. Those people will, and probably already get, a break (subsidized payment) for utilities. Some things aren't going to change for a looong time. But newer and new construction, or homes in gentrified high rent areas - gotta start somewhere - go green/solar. Rebuild the interurban transportation that oil companies colluded to get rid of a hundred years ago.

Sitting around and doing nothing but maintain the status quo, letting the environment go to hell, is not a viable option.

If you took away petroleum today, the entire world economy would collapse. So if we had a viable alternative to petroleum, do you really expect to see it take over the market any time soon? The energy producers of the world have more then enough clout and resources to keep anything competitive off the market. So until we actually near the point of drying up the worlds reserves, do you really believe petroleum producers are just going to sit idly by and watch their industry be shelved?

Rick, you seriously sound like an insider who has sympathy for the "green" ideas, but have resigned yourself to a perceived inevitable fate. If we can get a government sympathetic to "green", then the oil companies will have less clout. They'll still throw their money around, but the public has to be made aware of what's at stake - not only the environment, but future energy sources that are sustainable.

Maybe it will take 4 years of a Romney admin to wake people up to just how much, at all levels of society's issues, the current crop of Repubs will lower their standard of living and quality of life. But it may be too late.

Obama's green energy policy has been all for show, and to hand out the dough. Just a few short years ago all the talk in Washington was about hydrogen fuel cells, and now nothing about that technology. With Obama it has been solar and wind. The truth is very simple, Washington does not care. They do their best to give lip service for the environmental enthusiasts, and they pretend to care by tossing some money around, but the world can't seem to find a new way to drive cars, create electricity, or heat our homes.

There are any number of reasons oil is here to stay, and not the least of which is that the global economy depends on it. For some countries petroleum is their industry, and with the trading in commodities there needs to be a slow gradual weening off petroleum. But there is also the hole in the federal budget that will be created when petroleum goes bye bye. So the desire to actually make it happen does not exist in Washington except around election time.

There is simply too much money in the world of petroleum, and here in the US the federal government makes more off taxes then the oil companies make in profits. So who is kidding who, as if anyone in Washington really wants that gravy train to end. You have to realize how desperate Washington is to find new taxable revenue, especially when tanning beds are being taxed to pay for ObamaCare. So for a comparable argument, at least the oil industry generates far more in tax dollars then they receive in subsidies, unlike the green energy initiatives which generate no recurring tax revenue but receive plenty of subsidies.

Rick and smarterthanu, while I might be inclined to agree that the polices have failed when it comes to solar and green energy, I do not agree we should give it up. I think it is better to look at why they failed. China invested 100's of millions and probably billions of dollars into solar, wind and research and manufacturing dwarfing our investment. I do not think there was enough money put into the right places, meaning that many if not most of the people or investment firms that took the money did not give enough to the right people to develop it.

Look, there are many of us scientists and engineers that would love to have money invested into our research, development and manufacturing, BUT it is hard to get and it is usually only given to people who know someone in the grant office. Many times, an investment firm will get control of the money and pay themselves ungodly amounts of money to manage it, far more than they deserve. Investors expect to much in return to quickly and then take over and ruin the company by sucking away money.

It is not going to be the big players who come up with new and better technology for green energy, it will be the person working in their humble garage late evenings after their regular job. Then, when it is discovered, he/she will be threatened by the big guys in more than one way and sometimes subtle ways. Eventually, one of us scientists will come up with and be able to produce energy sources like fusion and matter/antimatter type reactors small enough to plug into your car, truck, house, etc and provide power onsite extremely cheap.

Even though it would collapse the oil market and NG market overnight, the prices of oil and gas would plummet and the consumer would be happy as could be. We would finally have the hope of being free from the FEAR of not having enough energy. The economy would not collapse on main street, just wall street. People would then have tons of extra money to do other things and the few who are in control of the current energy sources would have to reduce their paychecks. Things would finally be put into a better balance again.

In this event, everything would decrease in price because the cost of energy would no longer be a burden on all of us.

There are a lot of positives in the end with creating new and better energy sources and just because it has not been developed yet (maybe soon), do NOT think that it cannot be developed, because it can and it will be.

All we have to do is trust him, there's no trust where it isn't earned and after no tax returns so we can see how he managed to get a $100 million IRA, we can see if he wrote off all his taxes in 08 and 09, that he didn't stand up to any far right wing nuts in the primaries and now is on the hook for any number of vows that will cripple the country, kill our children and help destroy the world all so he and his rich buddies can live an even greater life than bathing in Krug champagne while moving between there many houses. If you vote for Romney and think he's going to save you and the economy your either filthy rich or really gullible.

While we are at it, maybe we could render the fat of old and poor people down into oil and turn them into fuel too.

Clean oil is an oxymoron. "RENEWABLE ENERGY" isnt scientifically possible. Efficient wind energy and solar panels with a market presence and demand... i guess the only word to describe that is joke... If the market wanted it and would support it then it would be. Period. I said it earlier but if just the liberals who preach it would stop using oil we would solve everyones problems. No dependence. No more hurricanes from global warming even muah haha. Dont just post comments about how the world will end. Oil is unnecessary right? There are other options... Use them. Let me have my cheap oil and make fun of me then for using dated and uneccesary technology. You guys are like heroine addicts calling out cocaine addicts for being druggies.

Liberals rushed to buy up the new green energy Chevy Volt in such droves that they had to stop production to try and end the over supply. Which was only a few thousand vehicles. Liberals show up to every argument or demonstration in their SUV's and waving signs made from destroying the forest. Obama, the Democratic Party, and their liberal supporters are all about do as I say not as I do. Even Senator John Kerry fought the wind project off of Martha's Vineyard, because it ruined his view. The totally pompous not in my backyard crowd. Liberals have no viable solutions, but that won't stop them from forcing everyone else to suffer.

                                                Talontbo-

Here in my midwestern State, there is hardly any energy underground to be leased, but under a State controlled plan, what there is would be leased to friends of the Governor- with NO consderation of costs to the consumer and with NO regulation on safety of workers or consumers.

I guess the people of my State can just re-enact "The Grapes of Wrath"- me and granny will have to live out of my tiny car, like an Okie family in the dustbowl exodus....

Actual, with the Republican plan to "drill, baby, drill", the world price of oil will decrease slightly until demand catches up. So there would be a short term boost for Americans.

As demand in the developed countries remains relatively stable, the increase in demand will come from developing countries such as China and India.

Thus, most of the US energy reserves will go to feed the developing countries, which in turn will recoup their costs through export of products back to the developed world.

In short, think of it as trading our long term national resources for a short term buff to help the non-developed world create more jobs exporting products.

It's more a boon to developing China and India's economy then it is to the US economy. The oil companies will still see the profits, and the Chinese and Indian people will see the jobs.

At least we know where Romney's "blind trust" portfolio is invested.....developing world corporate stock.

I would more than love to have my home converted to Solar and wind and plug my car into that electricity sourcing than to continue to use gas. But the big corporations like their fix from us to pay them, and they continue to use the lie of corporate free speech to control local and state governments to make it almost impossible to outfit your home with these technologies. There is no hope for anything beside paying MORE MONEY to the corporatists and 1%.

And more fascist lies. What is stopping you from loading your roof with solar panels and buying a Leaf or Focus electric? Please tell me how any big corporation or big oil will stop you.

I'm conservative as they come and nobody stopped me from putting 10KW of solar on my roof. If I felt like it I could go down to my local Nissan dealer and pick up a Leaf.

I called you out, just a poser parroting leftist talking points.

In other words, said Mitzy: "What's a little lung cancer for those poor, dumb people in West Virginia who do not have enough sense to have a trust fund? Or some asthma trouble for kids? Pish! No problem. My friends and I will rape America of its last resources so that we can buy things on the cheap. Who suffers? Only those unmentionable poor folk. Yet another idiotic lie. We are already energy independent in electricity and natural gas is already replacing coal because it' cheaper. Wind and solar will not fill up your tank. It is oil that we are dependent on and will be for at least two more decades.

It is liberals that have been dumbing down America with their unionized public schools. They fight charter schools, pay for performance, vouchers, etc. all things proven to improve education. Nice try.

Yeah, Phil it's the liberals that have been ruining American education with unionized schools. It wouldn't have anything to do with education funding being cut, and at the college-level the cost of college and the lenders that think credit card-like interest rates are fair, especially to person with minimal or no income. I can see why more and more people I know are avoiding college to go straight into the workforce debt-free. Also, instead of increasing education funding, it had been cut and depending on the outcome in November, could be cut more to increase the military budget. But yeah, it's the unions killing the American Education System.

Warning sign. North American energy independence is a myth, .. like unicorns. North American Energy independence is only possible if things like solar, wind and other forms of green and alternative energy are developed and leveraged. Relying on drilling for more oil will not help unless there is massive amounts of oil that is as of yet undiscovered, .. which there aren't. Only by adding far more oil to the equation can you afford to export it AND keep energy prices low in North America. Without massive new sources of American oil, every drop of oil that is pumped is subject to market prices and may well get exported because other countries can afford it. So again, you need to find MASSIVE amounts of easily attainable oil. If there was these massive amounts we'd likely already know about it.

"The U.S. also currently imports more than half its oil from countries in the Western Hemisphere, with Canada making up a 29-percent share. Those imports could be increased through ... by the immediate approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, and similar projects.

Warning BS alert. The proposed pipeline would go from Canada to a port in the gulf, .. likely Huston. The only reason you need it to go there is so it can be exported to China more easily and at greater profit.

It would be far easier to build a pipeline from the plains of Canada, down the American plains than building one that went over the Canadian Rockies to the Pacific. The first big issue is it goes over an aquafier that sustains much of the Midwest's water supply. Even the conservative Republican Governor of Kansas has said he wants nothing to do with it and will go to court to stop it.

Also, it will like only create 6 or 7 thousand temporary construction jobs so it will have only minimal effect of the long term economy. So why risk it?

And, the group that is looking to develop the Keystone pipeline has already testified in Canadian Parliament that upon completion of the pipeline they expect to earn 2-3 billion dollars more a year selling America gasoline. Not because they will sell more but because there is currently a glut in the upper and Midwest plains because of the inability to move it out to the coast for export. So they are selling it at a lower price in the midwest. Once the pipeline is completed the glut disappears the price will go back up.

US Gov't studies have shown that through 2030 the Canadian oil fields will be able to move just as much oil through existing infrastructure than if hey build the Keystone pipeline. The difference is that they can move it more easily and make more profit if they build the pipeline.

The Canadian threat to build a pipeline to Vancouver and sell the oil to China is a bluff. And, selling it to China is their goal anyway.

Amen. If China wants to continue with the nasty oil spills and the pollution from petroleum products let them go right ahead. The oil industry does not like wind and solar energy production because it threatens to de-monopolize and de-centralize energy production and distribution. Oil might not be king any more. They don't like that idea. they need time to buy up all of the patents before they will like such things. It's interesting that Shell advertises their sugar ethanol production in Brazil, but they don't say a thing about ours. That is because they don't own it!!!!!! Cellulose ethanol research is going on to make ethanol from grasses, etc that don't need much attention to grow and can grow in places where no agriculture is possible now. This is pollution free, domestic fuel. Why in HEAVEN's NAME are we not pushing it forward????

I like the BS alert, sheds new light pointing out the port part, Along the same lines, someone once pointed out to me that it makes sense in a way for us to be paying big dollars for imported oil rather than using our own-- assuming we aren't using alternative sources. Let others sell theirs, we still have ours in reserve in case it is REALLy needed at home, and we aren't screwing up our environment in the mean time.

While you guys are patting yourselves on the back I have a couple of questions for you to ponder.

Where do you think all of the material for these solar panels and wind farms come from?

Do you know the difference between proven reserves and un proven reserves?

How is trading one dependence for another a win?

What are you willing to give up to live in the world that you are dreaming of?

How quickly people forget the Gulf Oil spill which occurred because the federal government was rubber stamping inspections because they are stretched to thin.

Who Is the Federal Government answerable to?

If the States had more control don't you think they would do a much better job of inspections etc. considering it would be in their own backyard and they would have to answer to the People of the State?

States move alot faster than the Fed and they have a much better understanding of their territory than some Bureaucrat in Washington who has probably never been to those States.

If I remember Governor Jindal, and other gulf coast states were reacting to the gulf spill and taking measures to protect their wetlands etc. but where blocked because of Federal Bureaucracy. At the time Obama Admin didn't know if they were in charge, BP was In, the coast guard was in charge, It took them what two weeks, a month before they finally figured it out?

                                                  Actually two months David.

Immediately after Deepwater Horizon explosion, a competent president immediately would have made government-to-government requests for every single oil skimmer ship in the entire world to head for the Gulf of Mexico and start orbiting the blowout. This would have prevented any spread of the oil beyond the immediate area.

By contrast, Obama dithered for 60 days, allowing the oil to spread throughout the Gulf, and creating a serious environmental disaster. Even then, all he did was assemble lawyers to sue BP.

Why? aside from manyof them likely sinking in the high seas (small boats, low waterline), the technology is like 30+ years old, and we have most if not all the skimmers. Big oil has not invested in prevention, prevention cuts into profits. FACT

Noah, "How quickly people forget the Gulf Oil spill which occurred because the federal government was rubber stamping inspections because they are stretched to thin." Could you give us on thread of info on site that backs your opinion up? http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2011-09-14/bp-oil-spill/50408458/1,http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0908/BP-report-on-cause-of-Gulf-oil-spill-spreads-the-blame, the list is almost endless, yet you wing-nuts come up with trash talk like this,"States move alot faster than the Fed and they have a much better understanding of their territory than some Bureaucrat in Washington who has probably never been to those States." Who are you anyway? Why do you make this sh*t up? Don't you believe in popular opinion and worldwide news?

Worse oil spill caused by not enough regulation/inspections etc. Blame Bush and the way Big oil comes from multinational firms to break the existing laws. Guess some peole(REPUBS) forgot how BP broke the laws and ignored warnings etc causing oil spil.....DUHHHH!......Can't blame Obama.

States that are repub controlled would not give a damn about regulations. States broke as well, regulation has to come from feds to keep protection for all. Close the tax looholes on the greedy rich like Romney and Ryan and make them pay their fair share of taxes. Like Obama did with Swiss banks accounts. IRS struck deal with Swiss banksin 2009 to catch the tax dodgers like Romney, now those rich are pissed and spending hundreds of Millions to remove President Obama.

Kannin, yoe are wrong according to these news story's,,,,,,,,http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/25/nation/la-na-jones-actqa-20100625, and from wikipedia "The Netherlands also offered to prepare a contingency plan to protect Louisiana marshlands with sand barriers and a Dutch research institute developed a strategy to begin building 60 mile-long (100 km) dikes within three weeks. According to Geert Visser, Dutch Consul-General, the U.S. government responded to the Dutch offer with "Thanks for your help, but at the moment we can manage ourselves", despite BP's desire to bring in the Dutch equipment.[15][16] US regulations require that oil-contaminated water must be stored on board in US waters. The Dutch vessels continuously extract the majority of the oil, but the water that returns to the ocean does not comply with the U.S. standard."

Get it Kannin, your conservative news site forgot to tell you the Dutch skimmers do a terrible job, (that figures, but not to a political hack) and the water they skim is returned to the ocean dirty, with level of oil above OUR standards, not the Dutch's. So you want us to lower ourselves to another country's standard? You are one dumb Tea tard.

"The State Department sent letters to some U.S. allies two weeks after the
accident, and the Coast Guard initially sought to assess what supplies might be
available overseas, but the administration's public posture on aid has been
inconsistent. On May 5, Crowley announced that 13 international offers had been
received and that decisions on what to accept would be made "in the next day or
two." Two weeks later, the State Department said the government saw no reason to
                                                  accept any of the offers.

Crowley said the Obama administration is well aware of what happened after
Hurricane Katrina, when the U.S. government failed to capitalize on an
unprecedented amount of foreign aid offers. Allies offered $854 million in cash
and in oil meant to be sold for cash. In the end, only $126 million in cash from
                                                  40 donors was received."

Q: Did Obama turn down foreign offers of assistance in cleaning up the Gulf oil spill? Did he refuse to waive Jones Act restrictions on foreign-flag vessels?

A: No to both questions. So far, offers from six foreign countries or entities have been accepted and only one offer has been rejected. Fifteen foreign-flag vessels are working on the cleanup, and none required a waiver.

A chart provided by the State Department shows that as of June 23 offers from six foreign countries or entities had been accepted. Fifty more offers were under consideration — including multiple offers from a single country or entity." http://www.factcheck.org/2010/06/oil-spill-foreign-help-and-the-jones-act/

Each offer must be compliant not only with the needs outlined by the Unified Command, but also with U.S. safety regulations. The Unified Command provided us with this statement and information:

Unified Command, June 22: Those offers of international assistance that were not accepted, while greatly appreciated, did not meet the operational requirements of the Unified Command. These offers have not been declined because they may be needed in the future as response strategies change. Some challenges in accepting these offers included:

                                                  • Equipment failed to meet US requirements/specifications (i.e. dispersant not on approved list/containment boom made of non-approved material)
                                                  • Contingencies placed on the offers proved logistically impracticable when compared to other sources.
                                                  • In one instance, the offering country’s export laws prohibited delivery of the assistance
                                                  • Contingencies placed on the offers made it difficult for the Unified Command to meet the contingency

Also, all offers, except for a few, come with a serious price tag. The Associated Press compared these offers with recent aid that the U.S. gave to some of these countries. The AP reported:

Associated Press, June 18: U.S. disaster aid is almost always free of charge; other nations expect the U.S. to pay for help.

"These offers are not typically offers of aid," said Lt. Erik Halvorson, a Coast Guard spokesman. "Normally, they are offers to sell resources to BP or the U.S. government."

Reports claiming that the federal government has refused help are not only incorrect — foreign assistance has been utilized — but are also misleading: purchasing resources and expertise is vastly different from accepting "foreign aid.",,,,,,,,,,,again from http://www.factcheck.org/2010/06/oil-spill-foreign-help-and-the-jones-act/

Excellent plan! Now we see why Romney was able to take failing businesses and return them to prosperity. He has produced an innovative plan, but more importantly, he has produced a plan that can actually be implemented and work.

Unlike Obama's fumbling attempts to solve problems just by blindly throwing our money at them.

I especially like the fact that it returns the means of production to the ones who will benefit by efficient energy production – the states. Specifically:

                                                    “States will be empowered to establish processes to oversee the development and production of all forms of energy on federal lands within their borders, excluding only lands specially designated off-limits;

                                                    State regulatory processes and permitting programs for all forms of energy development will be deemed to satisfy all requirements of federal law;

Federal agencies will certify state processes as adequate, according to established criteria that are sufficiently broad, to afford the states maximum flexibility to ascertain what is most appropriate; and

The federal government will encourage the formation of a State Energy Development Council, where states can work together along with existing organizations such as STRONGER and the IOGCC to share expertise and best management practices”

It will stop wasting our tax dollars on inefficient Federal bureaucracies.

He is a skunk, wearing a rabbit skin. His energy policy is nothing but a repeat of our energy policy for the past 12 years.

Romney's energy policy will do nothing for the people of America if all of the red tape he cuts simply makes it easier for the oil companies to extract oil faster and sell it to China or any country that is willing to pay the most even quicker.

Exactly right Harley Chic! Romney's first major business deal involved investing in a start-up office supply company with one store in Massachusetts that sold office supplies. That company, called Staples, now has over 2,000 stores and employs over 90,000 people.

Romney or his company Bain Capital (using what became known as the "Bain Way") would go on to perform the same kinds of business miracles again and again, with companies like Domino's, Sealy, Brookstone, Weather Channel, Burger King, Warner Music Group, Dollarama, Home Depot Supply, and many others.

Romney's work to date has resulted in the net gain of hundreds of thousands of US jobs. Obama's work to date has resulted in the net loss of millions of US jobs.

80% success rate by exporting jobs. Yes! America can survive by exporting our jobs. All we have to do is move to another country to take advantage of these $0.20 opportunities. Moving will serve two purposes; first we can then reclaim our jobs at substandard wages and working conditions, but second we are making more room for the co-operations to rape our land for whatever else they can get. Will the rape be legitimate though, or can the country you know, shut the whole thing down?

But who cares he gutted American jobs by selling them for cheap overseas! 80% success rate! Fox news said it was good, so its good! 80%!!!

Do you understand the amount of laws that would need to be rescinded? How would Nitt, do that with a Congress controlled by the Democrats......... You see it is propoganda, with no real conclusion, a talking point that has no reality.....get it. It can't be done!!!!! Prove it if I'm wrong.

How about that Luxembourg offshore account where Romney/Bain bought Italian phone company, ripped the money out of it then sold it back to Italy and the Italians have to bail the company out to save it. The same Account that Romney signed documents saying he was the head of Bain...the same account now that contradicts Romney's flip flop saying he was not at Bain....OH OH!!!!!! Caught lying again.....ROMNEY CAUGHT LYING AGAIN!

Romneys early ventures did work to turn around undervalued companies until he found out it was far more profitable to perform a loot and scoot strategy. Why do you think he wanted to retroactively retire from Bain back to 1999 even though he was still signing documents as CEO in 2002? The answer? The actions he authorized as CEO after 1999 would have affected his chance to be electable.

Bain bought KB toys putting up 18 million and investors for the rest. After aquiring it they borrowed 65 million on KB's assets and paid it all in a special dividend soley to Bain partners including Romney. They held the company together just long enough that a bankruptcy judge wouldn't claw back this special dividend then declared bankrupcty citing excessive debt as the cause. This left 3700+ employees unemployed and without promised benefits as well as suppliers owed money. Romney and his buddies profited 47 million but the other investors got screwed..

Generally, a downright horrible idea.

                                                    Kannin,

Why don't we just keep our resources here in the god 'ole USA?

Keystone XL is just a tool to sell cheap domestic (US & Canadian) oil to China an India. By depleting domestic supply they raise the price on all of us.

Good GOD man, last time I checked, 1 + 1 is still 2

Kannin I am done reading your posts. The Keystone pipeline executives testified in Canadian hearings that it will precisely distribute it overseas. Surely you thought it was strange to end the pipe in Houston? I mean if your true goal is to distribute oil in an area it would make more sense to put the pipes end somewhere in the middle to save on infrastructure. The only way we get any of that oil is by outbidding the world for it. Why do that when we already have a pipeline that they have to sell to us because its not connected to a port?

Do some reading on matters before you try to argue, you just make yourself and your party look stupid.

I agree with you on everything except one thing-ethanol. Most people do not realize that ethanol only accounts for around 10% of the corn production. 90% has always gone for animal feed for the last 75 or more years. Further, after the ethanol process has been done, over 50% of the corn is still left in the form of a mash. This mash is STILL USED for cattle feed. It is also considered to be more nutritious for the animals than regular corn because the ethanol process uses the part of the corn that is less nutritious for the animals. With the drought, the corn supplies are less and the price is up over $8 a bushel. I understand that if it is over $5 per bushel, it's too much for it to be worth making ethanol from. Unfortunately, it is a widespread misunderstanding that ethanol takes food from our tables. It simply does not.

The absurdity is acting like democrats oppose all drilling. Obama didn't oppose the XL pipeline but wouldn't accept the arbitrary 60 day dead line republicans imposed strictly for political points when states where the pipeline would run were fighting the proposed routes and environmental studies weren't finished.

Supporting the development of alternative energy and energy conservation isn't anti oil production. Most people try to portray democrats are opposed to drilling and republicans as opposed to alternative energy and clearly few from either party would fit that definition.

If you want to count on government and tgridlock, go ahead and place your faith in a Government that has clearly come to the conclusion that we the governed can't do anything without it. Or you can get on board with Romney and get this economy jump started again so the private sector can get some money pumping through its veins so we can afford to get back to innovating and solving the technical issues to developing and implementing alternative energy the good old fashioned way... with good old greedy private sector capitalism! Yep, you can bet on us or hope that Obama gains a whole lot of business acumen in the next four years....

I don't really care about Romney's or Ryan's religous affiliations. Hell, I really don't care if Obama is Muslim or if he believes in the gospel according to Reverand Jerimiah Wright! What I do believe is that without an economic plan to get this economy up and on its feet again, we as a country are pretty much doomed. I wish President Obama had some business experience! I wanted so much for him to accomplish what he set out to do! I would have been happy if he had been able to accomplish half of what he said he thought he could do. But the sad truth is that he has a fundamental deficit when it comes to econmic understanding as to what has fueled this country's success from the beginning. I believe he had good intentions, but I also believe we, as a country cannot afford another four years of OJT for President Obama and a congress that is clearly going to remain in gridlock over these next four years.

Daniel, I am an Independent who voted for Obama...and he broke my heart by selling out to special interest groups just like a GOP president. I voted for him because I was completely fed up with eight years of the intellectual failures of Bush and Cheney(who IS the devil), and the fact their administration put two wars on America's credit card. These will never be paid off and they're causing us a lot of grief now economically. I am old enough to know better and I will campaign for Independents from now on. Maybe I'm tilting at windmills but I'll sleep better at night.

FACT - the Keystone XL pipeline's sole purpose is to export the current glut of crude in the upper midwest to overseas ports, thus increasing the price of gas in the US. That is actually disclosed in the documents submitted by those companies trying to get approval to build it. it has nothing to do with making the US more self-sufficient or lowering what we pay for heating oil and gas. By exporting OUR surplus to China and India, these companies admit that it will actuallay raise the price we pay, claiming that those in the upper midwest are unfairly benefiting from depressed prices that are well below the global rate.

Are you kidding? And Willard is totally for this as the linchpin of his energy policy?

Yep. GOP. The party of Stupid. why? 'cause they firmly believe YOU ARE STUPID.
