Obama talks hoops in NYC, dunks Rep. Todd Akin

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Raising money among NBA players – who are no strangers to trash talk -- President Barack Obama took some shots at Republican Congressman Todd Akin, whose controversial remarks on rape Obama said were indicative of the Republican Party’s position as a whole.

Speaking at a $20,000-per-person dinner set up on the stage of Alice Tully Hall, Obama noted that the attendees, which included Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Carmelo Anthony, “have been paying attention to the commentary of the senator from Missouri, Mr. Akin.”

“The interesting thing here is that this is an individual who sits on the House committee on science and technology but somehow missed science class,” Obama said as his audience laughed.

“But it’s representative of a desire to go backwards instead of forwards. And fights that we thought were settled 20, 30 years ago,” he continued, linking Akin to a political party whose mainstream members, including Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have disowned him.

Besides a few sharp political jabs, Obama tailored his speech to his hoops-loving crowd, likening this election, in which the candidates are neck-and-neck, to a close game.

“I can't resist a basketball analogy,” Obama said. “We are in the fourth quarter, we're up by a few points but the other side is coming strong and they play a little dirty,” he said as the crowd laughed.

“We’ve got a few folks on our team in foul trouble. We’ve got a couple of injuries and I believe they’ve got one last run in them,” he continued, describing what he thought of his opponent Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Obama also suggested he was taking some advice from Jordan, who introduced the president at the event.

“Michael's competitiveness is legendary. And nobody knows better than Michael that if you’ve got a little bit of a lead and there’s about seven minutes to go, that’s when you put ’em away,” Obama said.

“You don't let up! That's how the Bulls won six,” he said, alluding to the number of championships the Chicago Bulls won in eight years – which, incidentally, is how long Obama hopes to be in office by 2016.The basketball-themed fundraising continued Wednesday night as Obama sped five blocks to the Jazz at Lincoln Center complex, where he hosted the “Obama Classic” shoot-around.

I guess since the dems want to tie everything associated with Akin to the GOP we can then assume that everyone in the dem party likes to take pictures of their private parts and send them on their phones and that most of the dems will someday be involved in a same sex marriage. You people are unreal. None of these pukes in DC are worth the conversation but you people still want to make YOURSELVES feel good that you are affiliated with the winning party so you keep cutting down the other while finding nothing to really defend your own. Neither of these 2 parties can run on their achievements or merits because neither has any so all they can do is try to cut the other down. Are voters really that stupid that they can't understand that?????

Not only that....but they have a disbarred, impeached, sexual predator who's also "very very wealthy" (never worked for it, but wealthy none the less) as the LEAD speaker at their convention!!!! Isn't that a HOOT!

I can't tell you where half of these reply comments came from but Solutions you just prove my point. You take one issue and the because the party you want to identify with supports your views you don't care one thing about anything else. Anyone supporting any party is a lunatic. Just because they have a dem or a repub sticker on their lapel you think they are OK. So I get from your comment that you are pro-woman rights so the disgusting acts made by a dem and sending them over the phone lines doesn't offend you???????????????????? You better talk another look.

See the 3,000 lb monument to Stinky (aka BO) and Moochelle's "first kiss" at Baskin-Robbins reminiscient of the PRNK enjoying *their* Dear Leader? I wonder if Stinky thanked Mitt Romney for saving the parent company Dunkin Brands yet? Would Stinks have had his first "chocolate kiss" (Stinky's words) without Mitt and Bain Capital?

This country should have more science and engineering/technology leaders in politics, ones nearing end of their regular career and who would come in and do logical things in DC. All these business guys and non-science appreciators should be sent back to their mansions and caves to live their warped lives.

GOP Voted Against 7 Bills to Help Veterans

Here's a concise extraction for easy viewing for those who are INTERESTED IN VETERANS ISSUES and need to know which party supports veterans and which party does not.

            The rejected Bills are named:

            H.R. 466 – Wounded Veteran Job Security Act became H. R. 2875.

            H.R. 1168 -- Veterans Retraining Act

H.R. 1171 – Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Reauthorization

H.R. 1172 -- Requiring List on VA Website of Organizations Providing Scholarships for Veterans

H.R. 1293 -- Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009

            H.R. 1803 -- Veterans Business Center Act

H.R. 2352 – Job Creation Through Entrepreneurship Act

DETAILS OF BILLS REJECTED BY REPUBLICANS:

H.R. 466 – Wounded Veteran Job Security Act – This bill would actually provide job security for veterans who are receiving medical treatment for injuries suffered while fighting in defense of their country. It would prohibit employers from terminating
employees who miss work while receiving treatment for a service-related disability.

H.R. 1168 -- Veterans Retraining Act – This bill would provide for assistance to help veterans who are currently unemployed with their expenses while retraining for the current job market.

H.R. 1171 – Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Reauthorization – This bill would reauthorize programs in support of homeless veterans, to assist them with job training, counseling, and placement services through the Department of Veterans Affairs through 2014.

H.R. 1172 -- Requiring List on VA Website of Organizations Providing Scholarships for Veterans which does nothing more than direct the Department of Veterans Affairs to include information about scholarships for veterans.

H.R. 1293 -- Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009 – Here'sanother bill in support of those who have fought for their country, passed by House Democrats and blocked from becoming law by Republicans.

This would increase the amount paid by the VA to disabled veterans for necessary home structural improvements from $4,100 to $6,800 for those who are more than 50% disabled, and from $1,200 to $2,000 who are less than 50%, disabled. This means, if a veteran lost the use of his legs in service of his country, the country will pay for the wheelchair ramp so that he can live at home.

By the way, the last time this ceiling was lifted was in 1992. There isn't even a fiscal reason for being against this bill, as the total cost of this bill, according to CBO estimates, would be a "whopping" $20 million. That's about a quarter (25 cents) per family of four.

H.R. 1803 -- Veterans Business Center Act – This bill would set up a Veterans Business Center program within the Small Business Administration, which would specialize in such programs as grants for service-disabled veterans, help them develop business plans and secure business opportunities. In other words, folks, it would create jobs and offer opportunities those who have fought in defense of our country.

H.R. 2352 – Job Creation Through Entrepreneurship Act – This bill essentially combines a number of other bills that Republicans had blocked in the Senate previously, and adds a few elements. The bill would again establish a Veterans Business Center Program; .... it would establish a Military Entrepreneurs Program; ...

VOTERS NEED TO SEE THIS LIST to offset the distortions offered by the GOP.

Is it any wonder that VETERANS SUPPORT OBAMA in recent polls?

Dont get cocky with you guys who are quoting facts so much. Odds are you learned them froma source tainted by the government. For all you nay sayers out there...remember, it took a republican controlled congress and a democrat president to pass the NDAA of 2012 subsection 1021. So they all must go! Both parties. And my fellow Republicans...remember our traditional party is dead. The Neocons (self proclaimes remember) have destroyed the Republican Party.

In a choice between Obama and Romney, without any bias, I would like to say it's like offering if we'd like to off ourselves with poison (Romney's fiscal plan, Voucher system for medicare, etc.) or with a gun (Obama destroying the economy, making everything tank and fundamentally destroying America).

Also, I thought you would enjoy this.

I really do not get the left. One bad statement from a guy running for a race in Missouri. Yes it was a poor statement but I still believe he will win. His opponent has to run on her record of supporting Obama and that will not fly here. Ask Ike. We ini Missouri will hear this for a billion times because she has a pathetic record and wants to hide that. Same as the current President.

Obama makes poor choices with his words daily and you on the left eat it up. Joe Biden I can't believe I am saying this is even worse than Obama at stupid talk and you praise him.

When it comes time to vote it will be about the economy and their record. Only fools will vote for Obama because he is black and they like him better.

Akin will probably win in Missouri because we are tired of big spending without a clue. Poor words or not.

Let a poorly worded statement be your only claim to re-election Mister 57 states man. The only time Moochelle has climbed out of her tree, other than for vacations, is to pounce on this single statement. Instead of cutting down the other party either of you 2 and your wives need to tell us why your ticket for prez is better and what you have done in the past and what somewhat believable leadership will you give us in the future. I want to hear how you will peaceably end the war, I want to know how you will create more jobs, I want you to tell me how you will deal with immigration but most of all I want to hear how you will do these things without stealing from one part of the economy, the workers, to feed the malingering masses that want to rely strictly on the governments handouts. And I also wnat to hear how you will do this with the Constitution and the laws of the land as your guiding light.

Did you know that Obama supports late term abortion? Who is really extreme here?

Is it worse to lean completely on the side of protecting the unborn child or to be willing to kill an unborn baby at 8 or 9 months? (Mind you that what Akin said was just stupid and offensive, but Romney/Ryan are pushing for him to drop out while the Dems are pushing for him to stay in)

The real story is that the Big "O" Obama was as crappy a b-ball player as he is at tying to play a president.

Using such terms detracts from your argument and makes you look rather foolish, which leads to more mudslinging and disgusting remarks about the other party. Fight civil, but don't fight a civil war.

Coin is your teleprompter stuck??????? That is one thing bad about not having anything relevant to say you have to let others speak for you and you repeat yourself a lot.

Apologies, Bob. I was trying to stay unbiased through this campaign (hence why I chose the name The Coin - as in both sides of the coin - as the saying goes) since I don't really agree with either side of the political spectrum as it stands today. Yes, I do repeat myself quite a bit, but it's due to people like you who choose to bash on me when I have said nothing to denounce either party.

If you wish to fight, please use less questions marks, at the very least. Just one question mark is enough to let me know you are stating a question. Any more is rather uncivil :c

Sorry Coin I guess we agree. I just must have misinterpreted your statements.

It's sad, pathetic really, that the leader of the free world, President Obama, lowers himself and the office to address the stupid remark that Todd Akin made. It's even worse that the President claims that statement is indicative of the GOPs position. President Obama should be speaking about issues that are important to America, the economy, the budget, unemployment...instead he attempts to paint his opponents with a broad, and false brush. Shameful.

The "Stupid Remarks" that this nutcase Congressman Akin made just happen to be one of the main planks in the GOPs platform, namely dragging woman back to the Middle Ages. And guess what? Your boy Paul Ryan was/is best buds with Akin and cowrote their anti woman/anti abortion legislation. You folks had better wear this crown proudly cause Democrats are sure as hell going to wrap this around your head.

Typical BObama! He's more concerned about his image with has-been stars like Michael Jordan (who by the way can't run a successful basketball team) than he is about trying to fix the economy. And, he goes back to his tried old boring guns, God and killing babies scare tactics. Boring Mr President. But, then again that's how I would describe your presidence. BORING and non-thought provoking. Just go back to Chicago and its dirty politics.

Notice the difference between someone interested in image (BObama), vs someone interested in fixing the economy (Clinton). Now compare the success of those economies. I'll take BClinton anyday!

Hey T, now you weasels are singing the praises of Bill Clinton? Now isn't that lovely? Too bad the Right spent 8 years attempting to destroy both Bill and Hillary with trumped up charges like White Water, Death of Vince Foster and of course, Monica Gate. And what did it get you? Today both of them are among the most respected and best loved Americans, both here and around the world the world as well.

And your boy Dubya is in seclusion with draft dodger Dick Cheney, your own party not wanting them to even show their faces at the GOP convention.

INTREPID, do not take T from St. Louis's words out of context. He said:

He's making a slant at Obama and his viewed failure in terms of economic policies. Twisting words about is what got the campaign into the mess it's in now. Rather than debate about real issues, both sides are name calling and mudslinging. It's similar to a fight at a school playground, just with better dressed people and money.
