NEW YORK, N.Y. – Raising money among NBA players – who are no strangers to trash talk -- President Barack Obama took some shots at Republican Congressman Todd Akin, whose controversial remarks on rape Obama said were indicative of the Republican Party’s position as a whole.
Speaking at a $20,000-per-person dinner set up on the stage of Alice Tully Hall, Obama noted that the attendees, which included Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Carmelo Anthony, “have been paying attention to the commentary of the senator from Missouri, Mr. Akin.”
“The interesting thing here is that this is an individual who sits on the House committee on science and technology but somehow missed science class,” Obama said as his audience laughed.
“But it’s representative of a desire to go backwards instead of forwards. And fights that we thought were settled 20, 30 years ago,” he continued, linking Akin to a political party whose mainstream members, including Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have disowned him.
Besides a few sharp political jabs, Obama tailored his speech to his hoops-loving crowd, likening this election, in which the candidates are neck-and-neck, to a close game.
“I can't resist a basketball analogy,” Obama said. “We are in the fourth quarter, we're up by a few points but the other side is coming strong and they play a little dirty,” he said as the crowd laughed.
“We’ve got a few folks on our team in foul trouble. We’ve got a couple of injuries and I believe they’ve got one last run in them,” he continued, describing what he thought of his opponent Mitt Romney’s campaign.
Obama also suggested he was taking some advice from Jordan, who introduced the president at the event.
“Michael's competitiveness is legendary. And nobody knows better than Michael that if you’ve got a little bit of a lead and there’s about seven minutes to go, that’s when you put ’em away,” Obama said.
“You don't let up! That's how the Bulls won six,” he said, alluding to the number of championships the Chicago Bulls won in eight years – which, incidentally, is how long Obama hopes to be in office by 2016.The basketball-themed fundraising continued Wednesday night as Obama sped five blocks to the Jazz at Lincoln Center complex, where he hosted the “Obama Classic” shoot-around.

Well give him a break, he made that BEFORE he was arrested for DUI but after he was arrested again for weed.
It always amazes me to see just how many ignorant people live in a country without knowledge of how the government works. Without the Senate to pass bills and send them to the president for signing into law it wouldn't matter how many bills the house sends to them. Representatives can vote on bills, pass them all day long but the Senate and prez have to make them law.
Harry Reid is the true SATAN. He has brought our government to a complete halt.
Odd, Obama had nothing on his work agenda today yet was in NY. I wonder who paid for that trip since he had no listed official business as president to do today.

It would be the only thing Obama could dunk!!! At least it seems Obama called him A Representative this time and not a Senator as he did yesterday. Anything to distract attention from....Jobs, Debt, and the Economy.

In this article a second reference by the president to Akin as the senator from Missouri.....are these mis-quotes or what? Anybody else catching these mis-steps by someone?
Sadly, you probably really believe that comment. You are just another of a large mass of Romney supporters who are willing to elect a president who cares little or nothing about the rights of Americans on the hope that he can improve the economy.
The entire Republican "plan" (plan is in quotes because there really is no plan) is based on the absurd notion that lining the pockets of the rich will cause them to hire lots of employees. Nonsense. No one hires an employee just because they have money. If that were true unemployment would have already fallen by a substantial percentage because corporations have greater earnings and are holding more cash than at any time in human history. WHERE ARE THE JOBS?
People hire employees because they have a job that needs doing and that job is expected to make the employer some money. Anyone who hires anyone besides a family member just because they have some extra cash is a fool.
Rights are important. Women's rights are being denied by fools like Todd Aiken who use fake science to justify a draconian position on reproductive rights. They would force a 13-year old girl who was raped by her uncle to bear the child because they are self-righteous, medieval thinking luddites who believe that their fringe beliefs should be everyone's beliefs.
The Republicans will not improve the economy but they will dramatically decrease the quality of life for millions of Americans.
If you mean by 'decreasing (sic) the quality of life for millions of Americans' making it possible for those who are being supported by the government to actually have to work to support themselves, then by your perspective, you are probably correct.

What is actually PATHETIC is your inability to read and reason. The decrease of quality of life I was talking about concerned RIGHTS! Specifically the rights of women to make their own reproductive decisions without people like Todd Aiken, Bob McDonald, Mitt Romney and the rest of the right wing zealots making all of the rules.
Or perhaps you don't consider equality a "quality of life" issue.
Obama's father was a Muslim. That means in Islam Obama was born a Muslim. Obama's mother was an atheist, and a communist.
Obama was educated in the Muslim faith... not the Christian faith, not the Jewish faith, not the atheist absence of faith... nor as a Shinto, Buddhist, Confucian, Animist, Hindu, etc. but as a Muslim.
Obama claims he accepted Christ as his savior... yet refuses to say when or under what circumstances. He claims to have attended church but that church turns out to be a Rev. Wrights radical haven for "Black Liberation Theology" which is simply racist animus masquerading as Christianity. (see www.solidarity-us.org/node/1469)
There is no evidence that Obama is a Christian (except a few photo ops at a church e.g. last Sunday) and every reason to believe that he has continued his Muslim faith (witness his facilitating the Muslim Brotherhood takeover of country after country in the Middle East.)
