Biden bemoans GOP Medicare plan in recession-ravaged Michigan

Vice President Joe Biden greets Lawrence Smith, 8, and Madison King, 9, both of Van Buren Township, Mich., during a campaign stop at Renaissance High School, Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, in Detroit.

DETROIT -- For Joe Biden, all politics is personal, from his relationships with past presidents to the little white lies his siblings told their ailing mother.

Campaigning Wednesday in famously recession-ravaged Michigan, Biden bemoaned the consequences of the GOP ticket's plans for Medicare and said that their proposed changes would exacerbate the sacrifices already made by families on behalf of their elderly relatives.

Noting that he and his siblings have been financially successful, the vice president offered the delicate details of his family members combining financial resources to care for mother Catherine "Jean" Biden, who died in 2010 at the age of 92.

"It was still a struggle to take care of all my mom's bills," he told a crowd of over a thousand at Renaissance High School. "We were able to do it, no complaint, it was an honor. But you know what it did, we had to lie to my mom and tell her, 'No honey, this is all covered by your Medicare, this is all covered by the sale of your home,' which it wasn't."

"Because do you know any parent who wants to be a burden for their children?" he added, arguing that the "voucherization" of Medicare proposed under the Ryan budget would further hurt the elderly's abilities to cover their own expenses.

The vice president, who commonly cites his personal friendship with President Barack Obama, compared the current leader of the free world with the gaggle of other commanders-in-chief he says he's known personally.

"I've known eight presidents, three of them intimately," noted the six-term senator after citing the "four to six hours a day" he typically spends with Obama. "I have never once in the difficult decisions he's had to make heard him ask me or anyone else 'what are the politics of this for me?'"

Perhaps the most resonant endorsement of the Obama ticket on Wednesday came not from Biden but from his introducer, 17-year old Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields, a boxer from Flint, Mich.

"It's pretty cool knowing when you represent your country, you've got a president and a vice president who represent you," said Shields, who was greeted with wild applause. "We've had tough times in Michigan, but we never give up. We just get up and keep going."

That message - and Shield's famed toughness - were echoed by Biden as he praised the Motor City's resilience.

"My dad used to say the measure of a man or woman wasn't whether they got knocked down but how quickly they got back up," he said. "And guess what? Detroit's getting back up!"

it's amazing that all the misinformed libs cite a NY Times article on Medicare! Thr NY Times is far left liberal and hasn't run reliable stories in years. They are a Republican bashing paper that isn't worthy of being put in an outhouse for butt wipe!

What I find amusing is conservatives cry that the NYT, CNN, nbc, cbs, abc all run stories about the truth of the Republican party and you cry foul.

When all the media is critical of your claims and point out the inaccuracies and outright lies of the GOP ; did you ever thing that they just maybe are correct? and the news stories are true?

It could be your just wrong.

Obama Is The Most Fiscally Responsible President In a Generation

Obama is slowing the growth in spending better than any other President in 60 years! The growth in the federal budget has grown 1.4% in President Obama’s first term, compared to President Reagan who increased the rate of spending by 8% in his first term.

In fact in fiscal year 2010, Obama’s first budget, the growth fell, 1.8%. If President Obama wasn’t facing the Bush era financial collapse, the outcome would be even

In fact let’s take the recession factor out of the Obama budgets, and see where that leads us.

In 2010, the federal budget increased unemployment insurance by 58%. If we take out the recession factor, it would have only increased by 2%, taking into consideration historical budgets. The same is true for Medicaid.

The baseline we are using is the 2009 budget which was passed in October of 2008 under George Bush. Unemployment insurance was about $360 billion and Medicaid was $224 billion. This is just in line with historical increases of about 2%.

So, in Obama’s budget for 2010, rather than $571 billion dollars, it would have only been $367 billion. ($360 billion + 2% = 367 billion)

That is already a $204 billion dollar savings! If we add on Medicaid, the 2010 budget for that was $290 billion. If we take out the recession, it would have only been about $230 billion, a savings of $60 billion. ($224 billion +2% = 230 billion)

Actually if we took out the entire stimulus package of $900 billion growth in spending would have DROPPED more than 2%, something that hasn’t happened in generations

My point here is that President Obama is not a spending obsessed socialist, in fact contrary to what conservatives believe, he is very responsible. A drop in growth of 1.8% in 2010 during the height of crisis is pretty significant.

President Obama is turning out to be a very tight walleted leader, and more fiscally responsible, than George W Bush and Reagan, both of whom saw growth in federal spending of 7- 8% in their terms

Shove this down your ZOMG Obama spends spends spends… There is NO fiscal way ROMNEY can improve on what Obama has done or is doing, period.

    Obama 2012!

BRINGING JOBS BACK FROM CHINA WILL NOT INCREASE DEFICITS; IT WILL REDUCE DEFICITS

To have Obama shoulder all the blame for deficits and debt assumes a government without a House of Representatives and a Senate. Obama was elected President, not King.

Until America stops assuming the role of a third world country supplying raw material to the industrial powerhouse China and restarts its own manufacturing industry, we can expect deficits and shortfalls in Social Security and Medicare funding. The jobs we gave to China do not pay income taxes here nor do they pay premiums into our Social Security or Medicare. Notice what I call premiums instead of taxes.

Imported items were a luxury in the past. Now that’s about all that is available. If something is “American Made,” it is rare. Usually it is only a percentage “American Made.” Is it any wonder why students won’t work to earn a manufacturing degree? They don’t want to move to China to find work.

Congress owns the lions share of guilt here in not dealing with jobs even though most of the 2010 crop of politicians were chanting “jobs, jobs, jobs” all the way to election day but were amazingly silent on the issue after election. It is time to clean “The House.” Americans voted for jobs. It doesn’t increase the deficit to bring jobs back from China. Strengthening Americas industrial base doesn’t cause deficits. It reduces deficits. If the “T Party” doesn’t understand that, they need to be replaced. They should be more concerned about their 9% approval rating because they didn’t follow through on why they were elected. It isn’t the big donor to their campaign fund that voted them into office. They need to trust the voter. If they do right by the voter, the next election will take care of itself. ZEEK

You will note that, while BIden states yet again that Romney's plan will destroy Medicare, he offers no plan as to what he and Obama will do to save it. In fact, their cutting over $700 billion from Medicare funding to pay for Obamacare) will hasten Medicare's end. Interesting how Obama and BIden keep bashing Romney & Ryan for trying to offer concrete solutions to our financial crisis (yes, I admit the solutions are harsh and cut back on governmental giveaways) while offering no solutions of their own, just the same smoke and mirrors of hope and change they have been prattling about for almost four years. Will Obama and his sidekick Biden ever realize that the country is broke and can't keep spending money we don't have to buy themselves votes? The debt they have accrued will have to be paid - with interest. Of course, by then they will be out of office, so who cares? The next President can worry about it (and he'll be able to use the precedent set by Obama of constantly blaming the last guy for the mess).

The choice in November is clear - do we want a Presidential administration that embraces an ever-expanding debt to buy the votes of its constituency and destroys the financial health of the country, or, do we want a Presidential administration which cuts back on government spending and rewards individual effort and ambition? Remember - be careful of what you wish for - you just might get it!

And Shaun - can you explain how Obama, whom you say is the most fiscally responsible president in a generation, has managed to increase the national debt by an amount greater than ALL previous presidents COMBINED? If that is your idea of fiscal responsibility, I'd hate to think what your definition of irresponsibility is!

Zeek: When the republicons owned the government they passed a law giving huge tax cuts to corporations that export American jobs.

In 2010 the Democrats tried to repeal that law but were filibustered. The Democrats tried to repeal that POS law again last month and again the republicons filibustered it.

      Why are republicons so anti-American?

I can't believe I live in a country that has so many fools in it. We had our chance this year to elect a man that would have turned Washington upside down. A REAL fiscal conservative that for over 30 years has been voting NO on excessive spending, saying NO to attacking countries for no good reason, saying YES to common sense issues like LEGALIZING MARIJUANA and REGULATING it like alcohol, voting NO to huge government bureacracies like the dept of transportation and education. His name was RON PAUL, and he was our only hope to remain free and prosperous. He would have followed a little document named the CONSTITUTION. You know, the framework that made us the greatest country in the world? You know, the document that progressives like G. Bush and B. Obama wipe themselves with everytime they go to the restroom. We had our chance, now we're going to make Greece look like a well run country. Dr. Paul's economic advisor, Peter Schiff, wrote a book back in '06 called "Crash Proof" detailing exactly what ended up happening to us in '08. Unfortunately, in the book, he also predicted how the government would respond to the crash, with bailouts and stimulus, and soon the REAL CRASH is coming soon to a theater near you. Watch "peter schiff was right" video on youtube and educate yourselves. Libertarianism is the ONLY answer.

          Our ruling

The Facebook post says Mitt Romney is wrong to claim that spending under Obama has "accelerated at a pace without precedent in recent history," because it's actually risen "slower than at any time in nearly 60 years."

Obama has indeed presided over the slowest growth in spending of any president using raw dollars, and it was the second-slowest if you adjust for inflation. The math simultaneously backs up Nutting’s calculations and demolishes Romney’s contention. The only significant shortcoming of the graphic is that it fails to note that some of the restraint in spending was fueled by demands from congressional Republicans. On balance, we rate the claim Mostly True.

Hey Shaun, In case you haven't noticed, the debt under Obama has gone from approx 11 T to approx 16T. We desperately need someone in office who will SLASH spending like Freddy Kruger to keep from going over a fiscal cliff. Unfortunately, President Obama has done no such thing. AND, he's made matters MUCH worse by increasing REGULATIONS on American businesses which is a BOOT ON THE NECK of job creators. If you research and ask businesses what keeps them from hiring, they will say REGULATIONS which are extremely onerous to comply with, plus the uncertainty of Obamacare and future tax structures. He could have fixed all of that, but instead made all matters worse. Here's another one of my posts:

You can't cut yourself out of a recession, look at history man. You have to grow yourself out of a recession.

Also Bush had 8% spending growth, Obama has 1.4%, pretty much GOP fault were in this mess, and its going to take a long time to get out of it the right way.

In all my years I have never seen so many people who are willing to vote against their own self interests. It really got cranked up during the 2010 elections, especially in West Virginia, Kentucky and parts of Ohio, and has now spread to the over 55 crowd in Florida. Maybe these people feel that somehow, some of the wheat being gathered in the fields by the rich (wheat=big $$) will be left in the field for them to gather....think Ruth and Boaz of the Old Testament. However, it is not going to happen. Mr. Ryan's (forget Romney because he will be the figurehead) Medicare will be an anvil around the seniors' necks.

Conservative Republicans are against WE THE PEOPLE. They always defend and support the rich & wealthy and I just do not understand that unless they ARE the rich & wealthy. Conservative Republicans want to take away women's rights, they want to take away minority's rights, they want to take away gay's rights, they want to tax the middle class and NOT the rich-they support war (so the rich can get richer) they HATE Social Justice or supporting those that are less fortunate-Seriously- I'm just at a loss to understand that kind of thinking..........

Our medical delivery system is and has been broken. Rather than attempt to fix it we just argue down party lines. Neither side has any idea about how to fix it so they just criticize the other side. It is like everything else that can be made political. The reason medicare exists is because seniors either could not buy health insurance or could not afford it. That has not changed. What the Romney/Ryan ticket wants to do is take it from guaranteed health care to guaranteed fixed payment. It is not the same. As more and more companies move away from providing health care this will be taken care of because the people who don't think it is a problem now will be in the same trouble when theirs is removed.

Medicare is dramatically more efficient than the for profit insurance companies, and the money being stripped is from Medicare Advantage which is a republicon program that is full of fraud and waste.

                    • The CBO has predicted that the rising cost of private insurance will continue to outstrip Medicare for the next 30 years. The private insurance equivalent of Medicare would cost almost 40 percent more in 2022 for a typical 65-year old.

Medicare Has Lower Administrative Costs Than Private Plans.
                    .

                    • According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, administrative costs in Medicare are only about 2 percent of operating expenditures. Defenders of the insurance industry estimate administrative costs as 17 percent of revenue.
                    • Insurance industry-funded studies exclude private plans’ marketing costs and profits from their calculation of administrative costs. Even so, Medicare’s overhead is dramatically lower.
                    • Medicare administrative cost figures include the collection of Medicare taxes, fraud and abuse controls, and building costs.

Last time I read, Barack Obama's (alias Barry Soetoro) past was quite radical to say the least. He grew up with his mother's parents for 8 yrs between the ages of 10 and 18, where his grandparents (acclaimed Communists) and Frank Marshall Davis (another known Communist) preached Barry the writings of Karl Marx. Obama embraces socialism and radical dominance. His association with Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright ignited Obama's passion for socialistic government. Obama joined the New Party (sponsored by the Democratic Socialists of America, DSA) when he ran for political office in Illinois. His Muslim faith has tied him to many Pakistinis. Obama is truly a product of his environment.
