Impassioned Obama hits Romney on education in swing state Nevada

LAS VEGAS -- It may have been the small, echoing gym filled with 2,700 yelling people, but at today’s campaign event, President Barack Obama felt more “fired up, ready to go” than he’s seemed in a while.

Today’s focus, like the two events yesterday, was education. But the president allowed himself to get a bit more expressive when talking about the importance of teachers.

Isaac Brekken / AP

President Barack Obama speaks during a campaign stop, Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, in North Las Vegas, Nev.

And while the actual content of the last two days' education-driven speeches hasn’t been incredibly different, the president’s tone seemed affected by the raucous crowd responses, including a sustained “four more years” chant to overpower a heckler who ended up being ejected from the event by Secret Service.

And this crowd also ended up drowning the president himself out as he finished up his speech, almost yelling: “We've got more veterans we've got to help. We've got more doors of opportunity we've got to open up to every single American. That's why I'm asking for a second term."

The president has spoken about his fifth grade teacher in the past, but bringing her up today allowed him to also put a personal spin on painting presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney as extremist on the subject of education.

Speaking at campaign rally in Las Vegas, President Obama says Mitt Romney's spending cuts would cripple schools while his tax cuts shower more breaks on millionaires. Watch his entire speech.

“The right teacher can change a child's life forever. Look, I know this from personal experience. When I was in fifth grade, I had a teacher named Mabel Hefty. That was her name. And she was a great teacher," Obama started into the story. "I had just come back from living a few years overseas with my mom and wasn't sure how I'd fit in. And she noticed that, Ms. Hefty. And she took me under her wing, and she made me feel like I had something to say, and that I had some talent."

"Gov. Romney says we've got enough teachers, we don't need any more. You know, the way he talks about them, it seems as if he thinks these are a bunch of nameless government bureaucrats that we need to cut back on. Those are his words,” the president added.

The president's latest campaign jaunt took him to Ohio and Nevada -- two important swing states -- to press the case for education as many students get ready to head back to school. His campaign released complementary TV ads to additionally pummel Romney on education cuts.

"I've got a question for Governor Romney. How many teachers' jobs are worth another tax cut for millionaires and billionaires?" Obama said Wednesday, using more pointed language toward his Republican challenger. "How many kids in Head Start are worth a tax cut for somebody like me who doesn't need it?"

But according to NBC’s Garrett Haake, Romney was ready with an educational response during an event Wednesday in Iowa.

“If you want to invest in young people, let me tell you what you need to do, Mr. President," Romney said. "You need to make sure that our K-through-12 schools are getting better, all right, that's number one. Not just talk, but actually getting better."

Leave it to the Nutty Professor to stick up for the union-destroyed American education system. In his mind, anything with a union is good, no matter how bad it is, because he's in the pocket of corrupt union thugs, who, in reality, caused so many businesses to desert our country to survive. Of course, our children will never learn this fact in union-run schools.

THE FIX IS IN!

If the journalists are writing incorrect English, who is to blame the common folks?

Is this line worthy of NBC-NEWs article - 'more “fired up, ready to go” then he’s seemed in a while'?

Shouldn't it be "than"?

If we get rid of the teacher's unions, there is more than enough money to fix the problem. As long as there is tenure based only on length of service and not quality of results, we will continue to have undereducated, brainwashed children.

Clean out crappy teachers and give our kids a chance!

Maria,

We spend more on education than any other country both by money and per student. If you feel spending more money is the solution then vote for our current President, but if you feel the system has not gotten better and does not seem to be getting better under the current policies than it is time for a change.

If you think paying 208 teachers to sit around in New York City because they cannot be fired is the best the system can do then please stay with the status quo

Illegal immigrants could receive more than $7 billion this year in federal tax credits, according to one estimate, thanks to a loophole in the law that allows people not authorized to work to reap the government payments with no questions asked.

Though illegal immigrants are prohibited from receiving similar tax credits, a quirk in the law allows them to qualify for the child tax credit. And it's a "refundable" credit, meaning recipients can reap the money -- with average checks totaling about $1,800 -- even if they've paid no taxes.

Republicans sponsored a bill earlier this year to bar illegal immigrants from receiving the credit, but the bill was blocked from reaching the floor by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

You don't believe Obama has Marxist leanings? He demonstrated that right off the bat. He quoted One of the main tenets of Marxism to "Joe the Plumber" in one of his unguarded, unscripted moments.

" I don't want to punish you for your success, but we need to spread the wealth so those below you can have your same success"

Not to mention his most famous and more recent Marxist ankle showing:

"If you built a business, you didn’t do that, somebody else made that happen"

Yep, that's the one he's going to look back on and say,"That was the moment I lost"

His mentor (I believe his real father) Frank Davis was a card carrying communist. His father of record was a communist. His mother was a communist. His grandparents were communists. He was on record as belonging to the Democratic Socialist Party of America and has their endorsement. His friend and domestic terrorist is an America hating Marxist. His cabinet is full of people who lean Marxist who sing the virtues of Mao. He has the endorsement of the Communist Party of America. He has the endorsement of Raul Castro and Hugo Chavez. If you bothered to read his "memoirs" you would know that he sought out the radicals. Those off the top of my head.

You indoctrinated, uninformed, brain dead Obamanoid. Go light a candle at the crotch of Obama and get your worshipping over with. But don't pretend like people believe your lies and Obama's lies. We leave that for the minority of the country who have no idea what America is all about. One senior guy told him "You don't talk to me like that" and stormed out. When there is nobody around, he and his wife (yes, his wife is the same and equally cocky), they talk about people behind their backs and say how stupid they are, using words like idiot, moron, not the sharpest knife, etc. Yesterday, he was telling someone how dumb another guy was. The gentleman shut him up by saying "Hey, I'm not that smart either". That was his way of showing some humility and hinting to the jerk to show a little respect for others. Ok you got me. The wealthiest in the US want to destroy the middle class so they in turn have to pay more in taxes and fees to support a larger group of people dependent on the government to survive.

Yup, they are so evil and greedy, but they want to destroy the midde class so they have to support a bigger portion of the goverment. Yup makes absoute sense...

Anyone that is buying the Obama flapping gums service on that really has not taken the time to think about what the logical outcome would be. And because if it dosnt make sense or ring of truth, then my forend it cant be true except for Obama to try and divide those that according to Step Cuttler, get there news from E Tv and People Magazine.

Take a second to read what I wrote. If you bleieve what Obama states about destroying the middle class why would some party supposedley greedy and dosnt really want to up lift ALL Americans want to destroy that same income class knowing the only way to then support that class is them paying even more in taxes.

Obama is playing his hard base for fools...

Really, so the "evil," rich want to bring the people to the days of "serfs," and make sure people get paid nothing is that correct?

Then if so, how exactly does the evil rich have a base of consumers to buy the products and services or goods and services they make, provide, sell, import and export. How to you make money on stocks and investments when there is no margin profit because there is no income circulating.

So the evil rich is so greedy that they will collapse the very fiber they use to earn income and thus without that drive to provide, they are more than willing to pay more in taxes to support those that cant, and since they too will have to end because there is no longer a base of income to give to the government, only those in government will have money and control like the old USSR.

The GOP wants to destroy the middle class is so obsene and cant be true, because you cant be a greedy rich SOB but who then wants to loose that greedy income because you destroyed the very base of consumers needed to become even more "rich."

Obama is playing to the lowest denominator of those so afraid of not being able to make ends meet, caused by his failed polices, that he is counting on those worried how they will feed and clothes themselves and their loved ones to not look past the logical extension but to only think if only there was a bogyman to blame then the people will not see the Emperor has No Clothes. Or the Yeah buts, blame Bush, let me see your taxes etc. What has Obama put pen to paper, not his flapping gums, but pen to paper that has been successful for all Americans and not just his union buddies that he is pandering to so when he is out of office he will have a job.

kano - consider the historical example of coal towns and the economics of the "company stores." The objective was to have a targeted, effectively captive group of people as your "serfs", then sell to others to maximize your profit. If the businesses can drive down the effective cost of labor to virtually nil by offsetting the cost of labor through control mechanisms, then the distribution (road, rail, air transport) systems already set up and paid for by the government will assist in the efficient delivery of goods to the markets.

We have and participate in a global economy, once the market is saturated in the US, the profit is there.

I see so, everyone at Apple will buy from the Apple company store, everyone at Nordstroms will buy at the Nordstroms company store and all the GE folks will buy from the GE company store in the future.

I think you stand a better chance at winning power ball then a country allowing something like that to happen.

Lastly.....the company store, if it was successful, would it have not continued? Why did it disband? What......competition you dont say....who would have figured in a capital driven econ, where competition and innovation could actually make the life of everyone better is a bad thing.

If not for inovation and competion, then why is there such a large slection of products and services to choose from? I guess you only buy the same brand X cheese everyday from the same brnad x store where you drive the same brand x car as your neighor who resides n the same brand x home only read the NY Times since its the ONLY paper in the country . Heck MSNBC dosnt even have to try and bash Fox News anymore because they are the only company store for Obama........

                      kamo

You are not correctly interpreting the economic history and the situation. The (then) successful objective of the company store was to keep a group of people completely dependent upon the business that hired them for all things. The local mining company controlled the grocer, the schools, and owned the land where they rented out houses to their workers. The mining companies got every penny back they paid the workers and made a profit off of the food and rent. It was the ACCESS to goods and services that they controlled and the ability to limit the mobility of the workers.

It worked specifically because of lack of mass transportation and direct collusion between mining companies. They carved up their respective demesnes and worked with each other to keep the populace in check. It was actually unions that ended up busting up the scheme (in spite of the hired strike busters, the company paid for killings, and the use of the Pinkertons to assault the miners). However, even today, these areas in Appalachia are still some of the most isolated and impoverished areas in the US.

To implement this type of activity would be VERY difficult today due to improved infrastructure and communications, however, if there is a group of people completely dependent on a company for jobs and lacking the ability to move, this can still be successful.

So what keeps this group of people and/or someone from moving out of an area and away from such a situation? There are many reasons but this post would be WAY too long (even for me) if I went into everything so let's pick just one that is directly related to this article: education.

Based on the current economic trend in the US to be service and technology industry based, higher education is critical to personal job search and acquisition. Inability to perform the work necessary for getting hired relegates a "typical" person to providing services at a lower income level. This lower income level directly hinders the ability to move, the lower education level directly hinders the ability to find a decent job even IF they just got up and walked away.

Company stores, who cares, that could not happen today so to bring it up is mean-less except a review of JR High history.

We have loads of higher eduction.

Would I advocate for tax payer early education for pre-k.....Yup.

Do kids in poor areas as a whole have less quality education...Yup

But the root cause of poor areas having less "quality," education has nothing to do with money, its because education is not pushed harder by their parent, notice I did not say parents...

Why is a Korean, Chinese or Japanese American child not considered a "minority," applicant when applying to college? Heck, Asians including Eskimo's are not even considered a minority when applying to become a LAPD cop. Why is that?

Education in our cities, counties and states will never improve if the parents dont push that value on the child. We need more job tech high schools to learn a valued trade. Not everyone needs to go to Stanford.

What can a president do to push education, nothing, the president is not the parent of the child, the parent needs to be the parent and not think someone else is responsible for that child's development. The parent is responsible at the end of the day.

Most of you are overlooking the real issue - the teachers unions have built up a tremendous wall that makes it almost impossible to get rid of the ineffective teachers and reward the ones who show good performance thru the success of their students. The problem with President Obama and the democrats when it comes to education is that they (the democrats) are at times almost an extension of the unions. The unions have supported the democrats who in turn support the unions. President Obama didn't save GM to save the US auto industry - he saved it to turn the majority stake over to the unions. The Republican party has long recognized how much of a negative effect the unions have on our educational system and our economy. Republicans like Scott Walker in Wisconsin are fighting to reduce union power - it must be reduced - as only then will we be able to make considerable improvement to our public schools. The Education Department in the Federal government should probably be abolished - this would save an enormous amount of money - part of that savings could be directed to the states so they might direct more of the effort to improve education. Mitt Romney understands these issues - we don't need more teachers we need to diminish the control of the teachers unions and the government workers unions.

improve education on the state level? have you seen what they're doing in texas? they are completely rewriting the textbooks because the board of education on the state level wants to make it easier for students to pass tests! sorry but state level won't work either. and unions should be cleaned up, not taken out completely. i've taught at the state level and trust me, teachers get no funding, benefits, and quite often have to teach in at least 2 different schools just to make the rent.

And let's not forget the Texas textbooks that are "teaching" creationism or intelligent design in place of evolution. Or the ones that are rewriting history to not talk about the negative impacts of slavery and dropping references to the slave trade. Or the removal of Thomas Jefferson from being considered one of our Forefathers (since he advocated for separation of church and state) combined with the insistence that America was built "upon Biblical ideals." Or the idea that McCartyism (and the subsequent investigations and hearings that resulted in blackballing, etc.)was right in that communists infiltrated the US Government during the Cold War.
