NBC/WSJ poll: Heading into conventions, Obama has four-point lead

Matt Sullivan / Getty Images

President Barack Obama speaks at Capital University on August 21, 2012 in Columbus, Ohio.

After Mitt Romney selected his vice presidential running mate, and just days before the political conventions kick off next week, President Barack Obama maintains his advantage in the race for the White House, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

A Democratic ticket featuring Obama and Vice President Joe Biden gets support from 48 percent of registered voters, and a Republican ticket of Romney and new running mate Paul Ryan gets 44 percent.

These numbers are only slightly changed from July, when Obama led Romney by six points in the survey, 49 percent to 43 percent, suggesting a minimal bounce for Romney (if at all) after this month’s Ryan pick.

Read full poll here (.pdf)

While the state of the U.S. economy and the nation’s direction continue to pose significant obstacles for the president, the poll points to even steeper challenges for Romney, including concerns about his tax returns and a lack of support for his plans to overhaul Medicare.

“The election has moved from a referendum to a choice,” says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. “Mitt Romney is starting to accumulate a number of negatives on the personal front and issues front.”

Looking ahead to next week’s Republican convention, which begins on Monday in Tampa, Fla., Hart adds: “Mitt Romney has a lot of repair work to do with his image.”

NBC's Chuck Todd and the National Journal's Major Garrett discuss the latest NBC News/WSJ poll.

But McInturff argues that there’s still a path to victory for Romney, especially with Obama’s numbers below that all-important 50 percent threshold for an incumbent.

“When a guy gets stuck at 48 percent, it doesn’t mean they are out of the clear,” he says. “It means they are in an incredibly competitive campaign.”

The swing states, the demographics and the Ryan pick
In a smaller sample of voters living in 12 key battleground states – Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin –  Obama leads Romney by three points, 49 percent to 46 percent.

That’s a narrower edge in these battlegrounds than the eight-point lead the president enjoyed in the June and July NBC/WSJ polls.

Looking inside the numbers, Obama continues to lead Romney among key parts of his political base, including African Americans (94 percent to 0 percent), Latinos (by a 2-to-1 margin), voters under 35-years-old (52 percent to 41 percent) and women (51 percent to 41 percent).

Romney is ahead with whites (53 percent to 40 percent), rural voters (47 percent to 38 percent) and seniors (49 percent to 41 percent).

And the two presidential candidates are essentially even when it comes to the swing groups of suburban voters, Midwest residents and political independents.

As for Romney’s selection of Ryan as his running mate, which was made on Aug. 11, the poll suggests that – so far – the pick has had less of an impact on voters than previous running mates have had.

President Obama touts his education policy, contrasting his budget proposal to GOP vice presidential pick Paul Ryan. Watch his entire speech.

Twenty-two percent say Ryan makes them more likely to vote for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, while 23 percent say he makes them less likely to vote for Romney; 54 percent say the pick doesn’t affect their vote either way.

That margin (-1) is compared with Joe Biden’s in 2008 (+8), Sarah Palin’s in 2008 (+9 percent), John Edwards’ in 2004 (+21), and Joe Lieberman’s in 2000 (+13).

Ryan’s numbers come closest to Dick Cheney’s in 2000 (+2).

Moreover, in the poll’s feeling thermometer, Ryan’s favorable/unfavorable score stands at 33 percent/32 percent.

Hart, the Democratic pollster, attributes Ryan’s mixed numbers to today’s increasingly partisan divide, with Republicans backing him, Democrats opposing him and independents fairly divided.

Romney’s two challenges
According to the poll, Mitt Romney has two challenges heading into next week’s Republican convention in Florida: repairing his image and selling his proposal to overhaul Medicare.

NBC/WSJ poll: Voters split on Ryan

For starters, Romney continues to have a net-negative favorable/unfavorable score (38percent/44 percent) – which no other modern Republican presumptive presidential nominee has had.

What’s more, Obama bests Romney by 35 points (58 percent to 23 percent) on the question of which candidate is more likeable, and by 22 points (52 percent to 30 percent) on caring about average people.

In addition, a majority of voters (51 percent) view the former Massachusetts governor’s approach to issues as being “out of step” with most Americans’ thinking. By comparison, 54 percent say Obama’s positions are “in the mainstream.”

And by a 36 percent to 6 percent difference, voters say what they have seen, heard and read about Romney’s tax returns – he has refused to release returns prior to 2010 – has given them a more negative impression of the Republican candidate. Forty-one percent say it doesn’t make much of a difference.

Problematically for Romney, similar negative margins exist with swing voters like independents, suburban voters and Midwest residents.

“That is as much negative as anything that comes out in this poll,” Hart says of Romney’s tax returns.

Testing the Medicare debate
Another negative for Romney in the poll is his plan to make substantial changes to Medicare, the government health-insurance program for seniors.

When voters are given a description of the Romney-Ryan plan – that future seniors would receive a guaranteed payment that some call a voucher, and that these seniors could use it to purchase either private insurance or to have access in the traditional Medicare program – twice as many call it a bad idea (30 percent) versus good idea (15 percent).

However, 51 percent of voters said they have no opinion.

In a separate question, 34 percent of voters say they agree with the statement that Romney believes this Medicare proposal “is a good idea because it would strengthen Medicare and reduce government costs … by giving future seniors more control over their own health-care dollars.”

NBC/WSJ poll: Approval of Congress hits bottom

In contrast, 50 percent say they agree with the statement that Obama believes this proposal “is a bad idea because it would end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system giving seniors a set amount of money to pay for their health-care costs and leaving them to personally cover costs above this amount.”

What’s more, a plurality (39 percent) say that Medicare needs only minor modifications, versus 15 percent who believe it needs a complete overhaul, another 15 percent who think it’s OK the way it is and 27 percent who say it needs major changes.

And when asked which candidate is better on issues affecting seniors, 46 percent pick Obama and 34 percent choose Romney.

Obama’s own challenge: the economy
Yet Obama has challenges, too, and they’re the same ones that have dogged his campaign over the past year.

More than six in 10 believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, which is essentially unchanged from last month.

And just 36 percent believe the economy will improve in the next 12 months, though that’s up nine points since July’s poll.

Not surprisingly, Romney holds a six-point advantage over Obama (44 percent to 38 percent) on which candidate has better ideas on how to improve the economy.

Read full poll here (.pdf)

That said, 50 percent of voters in the poll believe the economy is recovering, and they’re split (46 percent to 46 percent) on whether the recent news about the economy has made them more optimistic or less optimistic.

The president’s overall job approval rating stands at 48 percent, and approval of his handling of the economy is at 44 percent.

The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted of 1,000 registered voters (300 reached by cell phone) from Aug. 16-20, and it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.

Many polls out there. It looks like the "Likely" voters are the best polls to follow. In any case, this poll is still too close to call.

I think the better question is: Where are they sampling?

If it was split between each state, then that would be a better poll. However, I think they are sampling from the same area each time. And that area is heavy with liberals. So no wonder the polls are showing yay to Obama.

Why not do a poll around the USA, instead of in one small area? Instead of Election Day that is.

RedSoxRule

Many polling organizations do not poll likely voters until closer to the election. The reason being, it is impossible to accurately tell so far out who actually is a likely voter.

The real problem for Romney is the underlying questions. Particularly, the one about Medicare. Florida is a must win for him. If he loses it, Wisconsin will not matter.

Dismissing things just because you don't like them is a sign of ignorance.

Keep telling yourself that and then look at the facts. Incumbents are hard to beat. That wasn't what lost the election for Carter. Well, at least not the only one. Remember the double digit inflation and another overlooked factor and the reason I didn't vote for him a second time was his decision to hold our Olympic athletes out of the 1980 games because they were held in Moscow. That did not set too well with a lot of Americans who thought our finest amateur athletes (remember no pros were allowed back then) got shafted because of politics. I was one of them. Barack Obama hasn't done anything as disastrous as that, so anyone comparing the two is an idiot. Now lets talk about Bush 41, the last one termer who's conveniently absent from this kind of conversation? Any excuses, baggers?

Nothing like watching delusional liberal Democrats wave that magical pixie-dusted magic wand and ride that pink unicorn! Yeah four more years of record high sustained gas prices; four more years of "the new normal" 8% plus unemployment (that that 2009 stimulus bill was supposed to prevent from going above 8% and create millions of "shovel ready" jobs); four more years of another 50% tacked on to the deficit; four more years of another 20% increase in food prices; four more years of another 15% increase in energy/power/utility bills; four more years of record high households on government assistance like food stamps; four more years of the highest number of sustained unemployed since WWII; four more years of fascist bailout takeovers and giving the middle finger to the investors. Four more years of kicking the can down the road of SS, Medicare/Medicaid, and "stimulus" bills for Big Green Energy projects to nowhere and bankrupt companies. Four more years of thumbing noses at the White House press corps. telling THEM what questions they'll ask like a Dictator In Chief. Yeah WOOHOO!

The delusionalism of liberalism is a funny thing to watch. The only down side is the danger behind the humor. Finally, on so-called polls like these, there's always something you are never told: what areas they "polled" in: democrat leaning, republican leaning, or toss-up leaning. And of course we NEVER see the loaded questions that are asked. But hey, see you libs at the polls in November when my vote cancels your Obama vote out!

WOW, the libbys are going crazy! Look at all the Fisty rants! LMAO You guys must be really worried.

RePube -- I just pointed something out, didn't dismiss it. I think polls right now are not worth much, but since the libbys on this site love them, I just want to point out some FACTS.

The FACTS show Obama with less the 50%, and this was registered voters not likely. Many would disagree with your theory that it is hard to predict likely voters. It is really quite simple and fairly accurate.

Bine -- the fear is evident by the over the top rants. It is a common reaction by children and those with low comprehension skills (i.e. libbys). LMAO

We conservatives believe in judging a man by his character not his skin color.

Excuse me, I just had one of those mini puke episodes. How do you judge the character of a man who made a fortune by selling people's lives down the river and won't release his taxes because he knows the world will see how he did it? You got some nerve, bucko. That i'll give you credit for.

Yep, and four more years of this kind of stupidity in government - you know, because liberals live for big fat government and all:

PHOENIX - The City of Phoenix could face a lawsuit if the city doesn’t apologize to a Valley woman for telling her she could not hand out free bottled water to people in the summer heat.

Dana Crow-Smith said a City of Phoenix worker came up to her during the First Friday festival in downtown Phoenix last month and told her she was violating city code by handing out free water because she did not have a permit.

Uh oh, no big city government permit to save lives, you are just SOL!

And let's just start looking at state-by-state polling where it really matters. Take Wisconsin for example:

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has opened up a 1-point lead in the key battleground state of Wisconsin, according to a poll released Tuesday.

The poll by Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling shows Mr. Romney leading President Obama 48 percent to 47 percent in the Badger State. The results are identical to those from a Rasmussen Reports poll released last week.

Gonna be fun watching the Democrat liberals lash out and nail bite and attack these next two and a half months! I'd recommend buying stock in a company that offers bed protection like for the elderly, because there's gonna be a whole lotta bed wetting going on!

Teaparty Low IQ (how cute) said:

They were Republican leaning poles, even Real Republicans cant Vote for Bonnie and Clyde.

Yeah you Democrat liberals just keep telling yourselves that. Be my guest...please! You people are backed in a corner and the Romney-Ryan ticket has you SCARED S-less and you know it. You haven't heard from the silent majority in some time, but if the 2010 beat down of you Democrat liberals in the House (that caused Nanny Pelosi to lose her job as Speaker) is any indicator, you are in for a rude awakening. And it can't happen to a nicer bunch of delusional Americans.

Why are the right wing parrots so angry this evening

Not only angry but as usual spouting crap without facts! The past few days have been fantastic for the President and I hope they continue to roll the same way up to November. The GOP is so fractured that Dems and Reps alike will be glued to the convention to see which faction prevails and who they piss off the most within their own party! Wonder which direction Mitt will be "forced" to take???? The only statment he's made that has anything to do with what's going on politically was today when he asked Akins to step down. Tomorrow we'll probably be back to his name calling and foot stomping!

This election sucks. Obama will probably win, but its not because of how good/bad a president it he, its going to be because the GOP doesnt have anything great themselves. So just like 2008 election its picking the lesser or two evils.

I wish all the candidates were on the ballot. It always sucks to only have 2 people to choose from. Both of these guys suck, and i feel neither of them are worthy of the presidential spot.

Why cant we get good presidents again like we did in the past ? What has changed so much that they all suck now as candidates ? WHAT CHANGED !?!?!

This election is actually really close right now, and a lot could happen between now and November; so, in all honesty, neither side has any real reason to be overly confident. But one thing I would point out to conservatives is that on the whole, Registered Independents do not hate and despise Obama the way that you do on the right. A lot of Independents find him personally likeable, and this election more closely parallels 2004 than any other election in modern history. Independents were never able to warm up to John Kerry for most of the same reasons that they do not seem to be warming up to Romney but they found Bush personally likeable. So, this could come down to undecided independent voters making their decision based on likeability and who they think cares more about the middle class and Obama wins on both of those issues.

@True Patriot: Agree with you. President Obama's numbers should be much higher than they are. When assessing why the numbers are where they are, most forget the central consideration way too many deal with when giving answers to a pollster. That consideration is RACE. Many, when polled do not wish to reveal they actually plan to vote for this BLACK man. Many will not vote for Him solely for that reason, or will rationalize the acceptance of republican bullsh^t as a handy excuse to cover their prejudice. If the contest was between 2 whites within the present circumstances, with the baggage hanging around the necks of Romney and Ryan, the democratic candidate, being "whomever" would be holding a substantial 20 to 25 point lead. The President will win by a notable higher margin than polls indicate due to the votes of many quasi, but pretend racists, provided the rest of us get our asses out and vote. As always, best regards. According to Rasmussen Romney lead with 1 point. Romney lead also among job creators. But Obama lead among union backers. Polls vary according to the sample the actual poll is at the time of the election, when the real numbers will come out. However, Obama is going down from more than 10 points while Romney has the momentum. Job approval for Obama is 47 / 47 , from more than 60% in 2010. Media bias try hard to get up the support for Obama, but there is no more Bush and we already elect the first black president.

NO incumbent president in US history except Truman post-WWII has won an incumbent re-election with a sustained approval rating below 50%. Obama has been stuck between 42-45% for nearly two years now according to Gallup (he did have a temporary spike to 50% in June 2011 after the Navy Seals and CIA did their job and got Osama). Keep riding that pink unicorn and waving that magical pixie-dusted wand, liberal Democrats!

Phoenix? Isn't that Jan Brewers state? Republicon/Teaparty State.

There's a difference between a city and a state the last time I checked. Phoenix has a LOT of liberal "regressives" like a lot of other red states have liberals in their cities (and that includes LIBERAL republican RINOs).

NBC; Obama 48, Romney 44 = Obama +4 Sample 34% Democrats, 27% Republicans or +7 Democrats - In 2010, the turnout was only +3 Democrats. Samples 17% African American

Monmouth Survey: Obama 46, Romney 45 = Obama +1 Sample 33% Democrat 27% Republican. Race mix matches US Known mix.

CNN; Obama 52, Romney 45 = Obama +7 CNN Sampled 46% Democrat 34% Republican +12 on the Democrats side.

Politico; Obama 48, Romney 47 = Obama +1 Actually a Battleground poll for Politico. Sampled 36% Democrat 29% Republican. The oddity that caught my eye. Conservative or strong conservative 54%

FOX News; Obama 49, Romney 40 = Obama +9 I discussed this one a few days ago. Sample: 44% Democrat 35% Republican.

Either everyone is oversampling or Romney is getting his ass kicked.

They are oversampling.

You skipped the Gallup and Rasmussen tracking. Rasmussen has the partisan trends at about 33 - 35% Republican and 33 - 34% Democrat. These are adjusted monthly from polling there well established areas that historically match election turnouts.

Gallup is using a little higher on the Democrats, but that is because they are based on actual party registrations. Just in the swing states, Demcrats are reported at -800,000 and Republicans -80,000 with about half of the losses being seen in gains amoung independents. The last I knew they are holding that Democrats are at 33 -35% and republicans at 32 or 34%.

Rasmussen shows Romney up 1 and Gallup has Romney up 2.

The other ones are playing with out emotions. That is how they make money. In the meantime, if we forget that they are people pushing an opinion, and are plenty happy to use these polls to back up their opinions.

Mac Forrester -- Howdy back at ya. All one has to do is listen to comments like Hank Williams Jr. to know there is a lot of ignorant hate and bigotry going on.

antgne -- Agreed. As time goes on...

...and seniors remember it is Democrats who have always protected Social Security and Medicare (as well as Medicaid for nursing homes), and think about the *divide and conquer* ugliness of throwing their kids under the bus, and whether they are really willing to take a chance that their benefits will be protected by the Robber Barons...

...and as rightwing women learn more about the extremism of pro-lifers who support "personhood" that would ban forms of contraception, in vitro fertilization, and want to criminalize ALL abortions...and those who may not know the QUACKERY belief that women who are "forcefully" raped can't get pregnant (!)

...and as fiscal conservatives learn that Ryan doesn't balance the budget for 23 years, and even this estimation is based on bad math, and therefore Paul Ryan is NOT a deficit hawk...

Gawd, just look at civil rights issues, for example in Ohio -- The claim that the same voting hours in all the counties is equality is BS. The urban counties with ten times the population need to provide more access for voters. The lines in 2000 were unacceptable! The counties are willing to pay for the additional access as well. I can't believe there isn't more press coverage of this. It is clear voter suppression for partisan gain and nothing else.

The Teapublicans, what have they become? They are destroying our country.

Osama has been dead since 2001 no one bothered to tell the American people but death noticed published in middle east countries and it was talked about by Bhutto before her assassination.

GM is now owned by the Chinese who bought it for less then 1/2 price per share of what Obama paid. Great work.

Foreclosures are close to an all time high, guess no one wants to talk about that.

3 1/2 years and 8 trillion dollars in new debt. Doing good Obama, George Bush didn't add that much in 8 and most was in the last 2 years by the democrat controlled congress that could spend all they wanted due to over ride of vetos.

Unemployment close to 20% Obama doesn't want you to know they don't count people cut off of unemployment. FYI It takes 150,000 NEW jobs per month just to cover the new kids wanting to go to work.

Who cares if Paul Ryan had a black girlfriend. What if I consider Comrade Obama a white man? It would be just as fair to consider him white as to say he is black. In that case, he would be the first white president married to a black woman. WOW

The fact that you liberal morons are only talking about Ryans exgirlfriends, and some people skinny dipping and not about the terrible job Comrade Obama has done to improve the economy and promote job creation shows that his resume is still awful. Keep telling yourselves that he is going to win, but the only way he will be in office next year, is if he signs another Executive Order granting himself control of the government. Not gonna happen, but it is going to be funny to watch them drag him out of the White House kicking and screaming.

The Muslim new agency, Al Jazeera reported him as dead, and radical Muslim factions, such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban have been vowing revenge ever since.

Against that, edna, you offer "rumors he was dead before last year".

    ...hmmm, whom should I believe??

    Tough question.

Maybe he IS alive, and secretly shaking up with Elvis in love-nest in the south of France. Maybe he was transported to another planet by aliens.

Or, maybe he is dead, and it bugs many Republicans so much that Bush couldn't bring him to justice, that they seize on every idiotic rumor that he is either still alive, or died years ago.

I never pay attention to these polls. One poll will conclude one thing and another will have different results. this election is a dead heat which is a bad sign for Obama. the big difference is in each candidates perceived persption of what the population needs and wants. The all important popularity vote. Kennedy won on popularity. If marginal voters begin to look at each candidate with open minds they will see two distinct differences. One says what he believes in and sticks to those commitments. The other says anything and everything to garner votes. Obama would give up his first born to get a vote. Forget about the tax evasion crap people. There is nothing too it. Romney's accountants use the tax code to save him as much as they can. Thats what they get paid to do. No different than you or I. If your jealous of his income then too flippin bad , do something about it. Obama talks a great game but can't get squat done. All he knows how to do is talk and i agree he is a great talker. But action is what we need not retoric. We still suffer from lost jobs. We are still in a resession and Obama has failed to accomplish any of his campain promises and by his own words has failed and should be a one term President because of that.I voted for Obama in 08 and I am not asshamed of that vote. I voted for who I thought was best for the country of the choices we had. I won't be voting that way this time around. We need more than a good speaker to right things.

GOP: the party of ignorant arrogance.

          #1.107 - Wed Aug 22, 2012 8:54 AM EDT

Many of these polls are sampling using 2008 results, meaning they are getting more democrats then Republicans. They don't do this because they want the democrats to win (well maybe they do), they do it because in the last election more democrats voted then Republicans. This poll has 45% democrats 39% Republican, 6% difference and Obama comes out with a 4% lead. If Obama doesn't have the same turn out as last time and the Republican base comes out stronger then last time the results will be completely different then anything using 2008 base turn out numbers. Everyone has an opinion but who ever gets their party off the coach and out to vote will win.

George Bush received 2 million more votes in 2004 then McCain did in 2008, meaning they either voted for Obama or stayed home. Obama received 10 million more in 2008 than Kerry in 2004 and 6-7 million more than Bush in 2004. Obama had a wave of support, 1.) because he was a blank slate and could be in peoples mind whatever they wanted him to be. Now he has four years of being on record, no blank slate. 2.) People were tired of Bush and wanted something different. Bush is not running this time and the hope and change stickers are no longer popular after these last four years. Obama is now "the man" and can't run an anti establishment campaign. 3.) The chance of having the first black president brought out a lot of people who usually don't vote, and even made some people who tend to lean conservative found themselves voting for Obama because their alternative was McCain who was a terrible candidate.

My basic point is Obama doesn't have the rock star status he enjoyed last time around and the Romney / Ryan ticket is much better then McCain / Palin with a Bush hangover. Republicans are angry and energized much more this time around and Democrats and those who did the "first black president vote" are somewhat over the rock star thing and the "it's a first" thing. Obama now has a record which he never mentions, all he has is hope that he can attack the other guy and make people think as imperfect as Obama may be he is better then Romney. That is a much different race than before and not going to yield the same turn out.

It took Franklin D. Roosevelt 10 years to get us out of (also) Republican induced Great Depression of 1929. FDR gave us Social Security and Workmans Compensation Laws, during that era and he created agencies or strengthened existing federal agencies to protect the little guys in America, requiring greater safety standards in mines and in the workplace, requiring over time pay if you had to work more than 8 hours a day, Democrats at that time strengthened federal assistance for farmers suffering from droughts ,diseases and floods.....and the democrats created the rural electrification program so all would have electricity...

People are short sighted, Obama has had to deal with yet another Republican induced Depression, caused by lax oversight due to Republicans constant watering down of regulations which protect you and me, and our families....but,unlike Roosevelt, Obama also inherited TWO WARS,.the one in Iraq was a War Crime on our part, as there was NO justifiable reason to attack Iraq, which was at peace. There was NO connection with 9/11 and no Al Quaeda presence in Iraq, nor WMDs, as pointed out numerous times by UN Inspectors...so Obama had to wind down that war and get us out, even as General Motors was lurching towards bankruptcy ( Romney stated "I'd of let them go bankrupt !").

Bush actually CUT taxes, even as he started 2 very expensive wars, one in a land-locked nation....you don't need to be an economist to know that you cannot cut taxes and start and fight two foreign wars...have to pay for these wars........Bush should be in prison for what he did...over 6000 American dead, 115,000 wounded, 120,000 Iraqui dead, and, according to the VA, so far 50% of veterans of both the Bush Wars have filed for disability....( My uncle who is an 88 yo WWII vet still collects disability 67 years after that war !)...we will be paying for the Bush Wars for 70 more years and Bush borrowed $2 Trillion dollars to fund that and left the Invoice at Obamas desk.

Obama ; Saved General Motors, got US out of Iraq, has begun drawing us down and out of Afghanistan, saw to it that Bin Laden was killed, increased Drone Missile attacks by 7 times more than Bush did, so as to save American lives, the Stock Market is surging, back to what it was over 4 years ago, and Obama cares about womens health.Obama uses surgical strikes by American Navy Seals and Green Berets, rather than send tens of thousands of our men and women through IED strewn fields and roads...this is a man who cares, a man we know and trust, and he has barely completed 3 1/2 years in office.

Why would anyone alter the course we are on now ? The Republicans agenda is to cut protective regulations, cut assistance to women in need, and to create religious based laws ( Sounds like Iran !). Romney has stated that he will support Israels attack on IRAN....what, ? do you think the the US needs yet a 3rd Republican induced WAR ?

Israel does NOT have the wherewithal to fight Iran on its own and would need US Supprt if it is to attack Iran....lunacy for us to go in there, lunacy

VERY interesting to see that Paul Ryan had a College sweetie, a live in girlfriend who is BLACK.......hey "News88" do you suppose that she is from Kenya too ? Suppose that Ryan used Birth control ? Maybe he has a Black Love Child somewhere !!??

Do you know that John McCain was NOT born in the USA ? He was born in a central American banana republic....and that Mitt Romneys father was a MEXICAN ? Born in Mexico, = Mexican citizen, lived there till he was 6 on a Polygamist Mormon cult-compound....Romneys "Church", of which he is a BISHOP, believes that God lives on the planet KOLOD...that's right, I never heard of it either, but Bishop Mitt believes it, so it must be true...guffaw,guffaw......What do you suppose will happen, when it comes out that Paul Ryans love child, Mobutu Ryan , wants his Papa to pay for his college tuition ??

While I wouldn't mind seeing it rain on their little party, I live too close to seriously hope it hits the area. Hurricanes are not fun, particularly when your yard is full of trees.

And the people of Florida, if you give in and vote for Romney/Ryan expect to lose your Medicare as you know it, and get ready to use vouchers until they run out. Read up on these guys plan if you don't believe me. They plan to privatize Social Security, and they are changing their tune a little to get elected, but then look out if they were to succeed.

Now How could that Happen... And Don't forget, THEY USED OUR CREDIT CARD!

Cost To Taxpayers Was $3.6 Million…” “But while lawmakers first uncovered that conference earlier this month, documents obtained exclusively by Fox News show the event was the setting for millions of dollars worth of bonus handouts. According to the records, more than 3,700 employees received bonuses averaging about $1,000 apiece at the conference. The cost to taxpayers was $3.6 million -- minus the cost of the drumsticks, and the consultant who headed up the exercise.”

This Isn’t The First Time President Obama’s GSA Has Thrown Taxpayer-Funded Parties – They’ve Hosted Lavish Conferences Around The Country:

President Obama’s GSA Sent Five Employees To Hawaii “For Up To A Week” To Attend A Single One-Hour Event. “The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said Wednesday that five employees associated with the recently scandal-plagued Government Services Administration went to Hawaii for up to a week in 2011 to attend an hour-long ribbon cutting on space leased by the federal government for the FBI.” (Chad Pergram, “GSA Employees Travel To Hawaii Five-Days For A One-Hour Ribbon Cutting,” 4/11/12)

“Taxpayer Dollars Were Squandered” After GSA Officials Spent Nearly $1 Million For A Lavish Conference For Only 300 Attendees. “GSA Administrator Martha Johnson admitted in a letter of resignation that her agency had made a ‘significant misstep’ and that ‘taxpayer dollars were squandered.’ A GSA Inspector General's report on the 2010 GSA ‘Western Regions’ training conference in Las Vegas shows the government spent more than $822,000 for the 300 attendees…” (Lesa Jansen, “GSA Head Resigns Over 'Wasteful' Las Vegas Seminar,” CNN, 4/2/12)

GSA’s “Lavish Spending” On The Conference Included “A Clown, A Mind Reader And A $31,208 Reception.” “The chief of the General Services Administration resigned, two of her top deputies were fired and four managers were placed on leave Monday amid reports of lavish spending at a conference off the Las Vegas Strip that featured a clown, a mind reader and a $31,208 reception.” (Lisa Rein and Joe Davidson, “GSA Chief Resigns Amid Reports Of Excessive Spending,” The Washington Post, 4/2/12)

GSA Conference Organizers “Received Bonuses Ranging From $500 To $1,500 For Their Contributions” To The GSA’s Lavish Conference In Las Vegas. “Four congressional hearings on the scandal are scheduled for next week. One will be held by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who said Tuesday that several conference organizers received bonuses ranging from $500 to $1,500 for their contributions to the event. She is seeking a list of those officials from the GSA.” (Lisa Rein, “Acting GSA Chief Calls Las Vegas Spree ‘Completely Unacceptable’,” The Washington Post, 4/10/12)

WTF is wrong with this: "Romney is ahead with ... seniors (49 percent to 41 percent)."?! I cannot beleive/accept that 49% of seniors don't care/give a sh*t about Social Security and Medicare. Does this mean that 49% of polled seniors have no idea their presidential pick is coming after their life-saving programs, i.e. those 49% are - how do I say this - stupid? Or those 49% are ready to vote for the Medicare/SS destroyer b/c they cannot stand the Black Guy (like my elder MIL)? Or are our seniors just saying random sh*t b/c they have no clue who's who? I am befuddled!

AnotherNewVoter -- There are plenty of racists in that demographic, who are blinded enough by their racism to believe the LIE that President Obama stole from Medicare for Obamacare -- When deep in their shriveled hearts they know the Democrats are the ones who support such programs, and not Republicans.

Teaparty - Romney now ahead in Wisconsin, and instead of 8 toss up states there are now 12. Obama' campaign raised 49.2 million and spent 59 million in July. Still only has a 3 to 4 point lead, can't even break 50%, can't say much for Obama's campaign.

How about the poll in the 12 battle ground states that showed 56% say they are not better off than in 2009 while only 40% say they are better off. No wonder Obama and the left isn't talking about Obama's record, there's nothing to talk about.

You would think the standing president would have better support. It seems everyone is sick and tired of the way the country is headed. You say get your head out of the sand and quit watching Fox news but....

Fox News Channel remained the #1 news channel in January, 2011. This marks FNC’s ninth anniversary at number one. The network overtook CNN in January 2002.Fox News Channel beat MSNBC and CNN combined in Total Viewers in both primetime and total day.

Say what you like but they obviously do something right. That being said the debates are what everyone is waiting for. I think the Biden Vs. Ryan will be a turning point on who can make good executive decisions. One heart beat away could be Biden or Ryan. I think the President will also do poorly defending his term in office while America suffers. We shall see. If he wins it can not get much worse and no where to go but up. Rock bottom is always a win win right?

. . . and during the convention, when everyone witnesses the extreme Republican platform, the President will be up by 6-8-10. Come September when people start paying attention, Karl Rove and the RNC will be trying to save down ticket races from their top ticket catastrophic failure. Wanna bet $10,000? . . . just kiddin'. I'm curious to see how resourceful that sleaze bag, Karl Rove and, "mitt the sock puppet,"can go. That answers every question with "I can't get into specifics."

I worked in the insurance sector and and in the financial sector. Even there, they was clear lines that you didn't cross by being a part of crushing companies, gutting them, and leaving the workers behind for your own personal financial enrichment--if you have a soul.

We just don't need someone that 'parts it out' and shuts it down. If we have any hope of avoiding total collapses in the future we must return to higher tax rates, close tax loopholes, reevaluate existing "free trade agreements, and, reduce the size and scope of the military, and adopt universal healthcare. Pay the doctors fairly and encourage via scholarship to train physicians. Employ by re-building this crumbling infrastructure.

We tried the imperialistic game--how did that work out for this country? Out education system is broken, we have the highest healthcare cost, yet 38th globally in cost. Our tax rates on top earners is amount the world's lowest and defense gets 50% of all discretionary funds in the budget. We've been at war or preparing for war ever since the end of WWII. Return the tax dollars to domestic issues and know that can never happen until the hall of Congress are purged of right wing zealots that want to hold the tax rates low, yet stay involved in the daily business of the world. Start by closing half of the 750+ bases not located on US soil. Mr Romney has promised to increase defense spending while increasing the US's involvement in International affairs.

Aside of the fact that women control the majority there are two factors that will make the election and its to early to tell tell yet, one is jobs the other is security that's all the American people really care about, Obama has failed on jobs and his foreign policy is a disaster, we will have social security and medicare till we go bankrupt and that's all there is to it. the trick is not to go bankrupt, that's where Romney has the advantage, its business savvy versus no business savvy, I think the American people will show on Election day, it wont be over Gay rights, or race it will be over our future as a nation. if we do not prosper as a nation nothing else matters because we are all doomed. we could use a business man instead of a mouth piece. I have some faith in the American people to weigh the scales. we just need to ignore Feisty and Tony Breeem, they are out of touch. besides do you take your advice froom a hooker and a BJ queen.

Actually most polls show Obama and Romney pretty close. What has Obama done for this country? Nothing. I'm not a big fan of Romney either. It's too bad that the independent candidates won't ever be heard. Hopefully that will change and they'll allow Gary Johnson to join the debate. It would be nice to see a true moderate have a chance.

To Marchant: Are you high? The country has been in a state of decline for Barry's entire presidency, and keeps getting worse. I lost my job in January and haven't had a single employer call me back all year and I have less than perfect credit, so I had to enroll in college and take out student loans just so I can pay my bills for a few months. Thanks a lot, Barack, you worthless piece of s**t!. Thank goodness it will be over in January. What I don't understand is how the liberal idiots can't see that tax breaks for businesses allows them to hire more employees (Oh, I forgot, you guys won't work because the government owes you your livelihood, after all you voted for the socialist bastards).

Voting for a independent is giving away your vote they can't win the Electorate college will see to that, we need to fight the system and get rid of that, that's how the system stays Dem or Rep, and only counts the supported runners. remember Ross Parole all he did was split the vote and hand the election to Clinton. to vote 3rd party or runner is a vote for the other guy. be careful how you vote, also sometimes when you vote no it means yes and visa versa do your homework there are trick questions.

Seriously though, this is the year when people are voting not because they think one candidate is better than the other, they are voting because they're hoping one will be less worse than the other! Where are they getting that number from, and who are they asking? I'll be amazed if this election doesn't turn into one of the biggest landslides in presidential election history. Romney can't even rein in Aiken. He has no standing even within his own party. I can't believe there is a woman, a minority member, a laborer or a middle-class American who would vote for this guy. Forget about pet lovers. This guy strapped his dog to the roof of his car. Forget gays, he beat a kid up in high school because he thought he might be gay. Then there's those who are patriotic, President Obama killed Bin Laden, has gotten our soldiers out of Iraq and is getting them out of Afghanistan. Can there possibly be that many insane super-rich people voting who want to destroy America; who want to bankrupt our nation and send all our jobs to China? Who would refuse to divulge his tax returns and claims to have only paid 13% income tax on the millions and millions he made from shipping American jobs overseas. I think the media is just trying to build suspense where there is none.

Try blaming someone other than Obama for a poor economy, partisan finger pointing, and nothing getting done. Last time I checked we don't elect dictators in this country, we elect presidents that are held in check by the judicial and legislative branches of government. Congress has an 18% approval rating...why? Could it be they haven't accomplished anything in the last 3 years because they're more concerned about running elections than doing what they're elected to do? Blaming Obama for lack of economic progress and job creation would be fine, if you had actually passed a comprehensive budget in one of the last 3 years. Which branch of government is responsible for writing budgets and managing entitlement programs? Here's a hint...its not the judicial or executive branch. Now Republicans think its a good idea to cherry pick their VP nominee from such a highly regarded group? Ironically, not just any joker, but no other than Paul Ryan, the Chairman or the House Budget Committee! I would love to get a promotion for not doing my job 3 years in a row and blame it on the CEO of the company I work for. I guess I can see why Mitt chose to boost his platform of economic reform by putting a professional politician on his ticket that has accomplished exactly zero economic reform in his 13 year political career. Of 71 bills he sponsored, 2 were enacted. These were lofty bills of great significance: renaming a post office in his district and reducing excise tax on arrow shafts. He's a real political and economic maverick this guy! Every proud republican needs to vote the extremist right wing ideologues out of office because they are shooting your party in the foot! That foot's a Akin right now isn't it?

You have a bit of a double standard there don't you? I mean, you place the entire blame of record debts on George Bush, but Obama gets a pass. You did after all type these words: "Who was the last president to leave this country with record level debts? GW Bush." That was from post 6.10 of this thread http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/16/13320646-obama-campaign-says-ryan-forced-to-flip-flop-on-medicare?commentId=69032857&__utma=154396583.1276294524.1334655643.1345619515.1345623157.158&__utmb=154396583.11.10.1345623157&__utmc=154396583&__utmx=-&__utmz=154396583.1345458322.152.33.utmcsr=msnbc.msn.com|utmccn=(referral)|utmcmd=referral|utmcct=/id/48720594&__utmv=154396583.|8=Earned%20By=newsvine%7Cnewsvine=1^12=Landing%20Content=Original=1^13=Landing%20Hostname=sleuth23.newsvine.com=1^30=Visit%20Type%20to%20Content=Internal%20to%20Original=1&__utmk=75041490#c69032857

                What are you voting FOR?

Obama promises more of the same plus a tax increase on the evil rich that amounts to about 5 minutes worth of government spending. He wants another stimulus when he can't even account for where the first stimulus went. What else is he for? Gay marriage, green energy, uh, uh. Well @!$%#. I have no @!$%#ing clue what he is promising.

Romney is promising tax cuts, less spending, tapping into US energy - gas and oil. He is promising reform to the entitlement programs that are killing the country.

Here's what we have heard from the media who, like it or not, controls the narrative:

                1. Romney is a tax cheat.
                2. Romney is rich.
                3. Romney is a murderer.
                4. Romney is evil.

                Here's what you haven't heard:

                1. Obama's economy is flailing with 1.5% growth last quarter.
                2. Obama's unemployment is impacting 20-25 million Americans.
                3. Obama's plan is to do nothing - no budget, no nothing.

So what are you voting for? More of the same? Or another direction.

Obama's "you didn't build that" is like giving the school bus driver the scholarship for taking the kid to the school where she did the hard work.

The poll numbers mean NOTHING - the only purpose in them is to bolster the feeble-minded supporters (on both sides) and give them courage. The ONLY thing that matters is the final voting results in November. Everybody get over yourselves and save your sanity.

                    #3.46 - Wed Aug 22, 2012 9:26 AM EDT

The abortion debate has nothing to do with a "war on women". Pro-life supporters have a fundamental belief that the fetus is alive and considered very much a living human child and as such destroying that fetus is tantamount to murder.

Democrats generally have a ready willingness to accept the value of the life of some of the most vile of criminals and allow them to remain in prison indefinitely, so I find it strange that the issue of abortion is so easily boiled down to simply a question of choice. You wouldn't allow anyone to murder their toddlers or teenagers simply because they believed it was their choice to do so. So why are you so willing to allow a mother to end the life of her baby simply because she believes it is her choice?

This is a very delicate issue. Especially when you throw rape or incest into the discussion. Does that child who, of no fault of their own, was conceived in the most traumatic of ways deserve to be killed? or do they deserve to live? to have a chance at life? to have a chance at joy?

Rape is life shattering on its own, but to have to think of raising a child brought about because of it is daunting... I can't imagine how a mother would deal with being reminded of being raped each time she looks at her baby and how that might make her treat her child.

The difficulties this discussion poses are hugely important with long lasting repercussions for anyone involved, generalizing them with catchy campaign slogans and rhetoric is wrong.

I'm not interested in getting lost in the weeds with pro-life sh!theads about attempts to change common law and language in regard to the distinctions between an egg, embryo, fetus, and fully-formed human being. The real reason for "personhood" legislation is to completely ban abortion as well as many forms of contraception, in vitro fertilization, etc. -- And criminalizing it --- And why this BS couldn't even pass in Mississippi.

Heck, it's not even in the realm of sanity to try to overturn Roe V Wade/Hyde Amendment. But anyone who as of now (the 21st Century) does not grasp the impact of "legitimate" rape and trying to redefine rape based on QUACKERY -- Based on an ignorant belief that women can't get pregnant if traumatized by violent force, then you all need to be traumatized by violent force because I now have a pseudo-science belief that a hard hit to your head with a 2x4 might knock some sense into you.

Bree-14 -- I'm glad to hear that you recognize Akin's comments for what these are. However, Akin's has already served many terms and is running for the Senate -- The damn friggin' Senate.

Obama has been an abject failure across the board. His promises have gone un-met, the unity he promised has become bitter division, his foreign policy lacks coherrence, he has had time for over 120 rounds of golf & lavish vacations but has only met with his economic council twice: 4% of his time has been dedicated to economic issues. The list is too long to enumerate, but his most rabid followers still possess the zeal of cult members & an inability to exercise reason, objectivity & independent thought.

                    @DAL:

Read the FACTS before opeing your mouth an inserting foot.

On its documentation page, the Stop Stericycle campaign lists documents showing contracts and other information linking the business with abortion clinics. The first document offered as proof comes from 2003 — anywhere from one to four years after Romney and left Bain Capital and coming at the time Bain itself had divested from Stericycle.

Most of the documents cover the period between 2007-2009, making it appear Stericycle launched a concerted effort during those years to drum up business from abortion companies. Again, that time period is well after Romney was no longer involved in the company or Bain Capital, which had sold off its Stericycle holdings three-four years prior.

While the pro-abortion, pro-Obama side of the political divide would love to sew seeds of doubt with pro-life voters and it attempted to secure another four years for the abortion president, pro-life voters can rest assured that their attempts are misleading and disingenuous.

The earliest report of this happening was in 2003, LONG AFTER Romney Left the company.

(If you want to play that game, Once a person leaves a company, everything that happens after that is still their fault.. Hell you are doing it now with the Whole Country... "It's Not Our Fault, Bush did it')

Outside groups have spent over 200 millions to support Romney by making negatives ads on Obama. They really like 0 "capital gains"from Romney's plan and there is one major factor why they do this.

They barely know what is Romney's plans and that is why they only have negative ads on Obama.

GOP, tell me what is Romney going to do to create 12 millions jobs on his first term?

I do not know of anything connecting him with Ryan, not saying he hasn't just not something I am familiar with on this congressman. The only thing I know is he is running against Claire who I am luke warm on she really does not bother me one way or another - some of her politics are not mine but some are not so bad.

Akin and Ryan co-sponsored a bill (HR 315?) that would allow doctors to exercise their 'conscience' by letting a woman die rather than perform an abortion, even if the woman was bleeding to death from a spontaneous miscarriage. Delay in finding help can cause death, if you're bleeding heavily enough. They also agreed it was a good idea to redefine rape so that a little 12 year would have to have her daddy's baby.

Just recently, in the Dominican Republic, a 16 year old girl who was 9 weeks along was denied chemotherapy because it might affect her child.

                      Now they're both dead.

But she didn't have an abortion!

It shows you what america really thinks about the candidates that Obama only has a four point lead over a such unsympathetic and looney opponents as Romney and Ryan.

Both candidates, Republican and Democratic are about equally distrusted and disliked by the public and it takes millions of dollars of PR and millions of gallons of BS by their shills in the corporate media to convince a majority to vote for one or the other.

Romney is a soulless and heartless multi-millionaire who will obviously say or do anything to get what he wants. He's looted society to get all the money he wants so now he wants power as icing on the cake.

Obama is a smooth talking con-artist who lies without conscience to get what he wants: ultimate social status and power. Black progressive journalist Adolf Reed described Obama as a "vacuous opportunist".

Obama's tactic is to talk like FDR and act like Reagan.

Obama poses as a friend of the "little guy" but has transferred billions/trillions of dollars from the middle class and poor to the rich with the bailout of Wall Street he continued and intensified after the previous administration while doing as little as possible to help millions of working class americans, black and white, who have lost their jobs and their homes as a result the recession caused by the swindling of the bankers.

As a result we still have record high unemployment four years after the crash in 2008 and no prospect of much improvement for years to come.

When are people going to get fed up with the whole charade and demand REAL change?

                      Yet another BS poll by NBC/WSJ. Here's why it's biased;

It surveyed 34% Democrats vs only 27% Republicans, when surveys by both Gallup and Rasmussen show that voters self-identify as about 35% Republican and 34% Democrat. Since party affiliated voters typically vote about 90% party line for President, this 26% sampling bias in favor of Democrats results in an artificial lead for Obama of about 6%.

When you adjust for this obvious poll bias, it shows a 2% lead for Romney - consistent with the numbers from Gallup.

Disclosure, The poll was 100% black and Obama recieved 100% of the vote, when asked if the pollers thought that it may look like blacks only vote for democrats. Shankika Watson said "Hell NO, only white people are racist", MSNBC stands by the story.

I glanced at that poll. They polled 100 people and I don't believe what areas of the country were tapped, but since they polled more Democrats than Republicans that one might assume if they polled more Republicans the outcome would be different. How sophomoric and yahoo posts it.

Agreed - I've been looking at the details of polls by other organizations, and they over-sample Democrats EVERY TIME, which obviously creates a biased poll to support Obama. If they over-sampled Republicans even once, they could have some credibility, but that never happens, and most people don't look further than the biased poll numbers in the story.

What's interesting is that Gallup has Romney ahead by 2% among 'Registered Voters', which means he's actually ahead by about 6% because Republicans consistently vote in higher percentages than Democrats.

                      That's true, and if you look at the most recent polls of Likely Voters by State at Realclearpolitics.com, and make the historical allocation of 'Undecided Voters', it shows the following;

Electoral College votes for Romney = 316

Electoral College votes for Obama = 196

Tied Electoral College votes = 23

                      Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Of course the election is over 2 months away, and anything could happen - Obama could even start a war with Iran in a desperate bid to win reelection (Wag the Dog), but If you are an Obama supporter, you should be concerned - especially since the 'trend line' is in Romney's favor.

Even if Romney/Ryan had a 15 percentage point lead, you'd NEVER see it here...

The pollsters distort the sampling anyway, oversampling Democrats...

I can't wait to see Ryan highlight what a mental midget Biden really is... dottering old fool...

Despite all the debate coaching he's getting, there aren't enough Cliff Notes to help Biden.

And since Team Obama has already blown all it's funds over the summer, unsuccessfully trying to boost his stats, Romney will have a 2 to 1 spending advantage in the fall. Natch, Obama will cast the Repub's successful fundraising as a negative.

                      Yeah right... He wishes...

I make over 6 figures a year, pay an effective tax rate of 20%, used to always vote Republican and there is no way in hell I am voting for Romney.

If I had one wish, it would be that the people of America open their eyes and realize that the President of the United States does not write the laws and Congress is broken. The Democratic congressmen/women are trying to responsibly represent their state/district's interest, but the Republicans are screwing over their constituents with a lockstep mentality.

If the Republicans were truly representing their constituents, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for them to be so unified on their ideals. It is unfair to the people that have elected them that their representative in Washington is allowing their people to suffer just to make a point as they try desperately to hang onto control.

The filibuster threats in the Senate and the ridiculous wasting of taxpayer dollars by the Republicans in their constant repeated attempts to pass bills they know will fail just to posture politically is handcuffing our government and not allowing progress to be made.

The members of Congress need to either start voting for the REAL benefits of THEIR state's constituents or they need to be REPLACED by ones that will.

The Public Policy Polling results with Romney ahead of Obama in Wisconsin is especially stunning, considering Obama has been ahead in that state almost double digits just two months ago.

long long way till November but it is looking good. The swing states are holding for Obama- Romney has a very narrow path to victory- he loses Florida he is toast, loses Virginia he is gone. Obama can lose both and still have a path to victory.

The best site for polling is the 538 blog and he has Romney with about a 30% chance

I never pay attention to the media polls, Fox or NBC, etc. Those are biased. Only watch Gallup and Rasmussen. And BOTH show Romney in the lead. But whatever helps you peeps sleep better at night. Look at the % of demos vs reps polled on NBC. More demos were polled, so of course Obama has more of a lead. Gallup and Rasmussen use same amount of demos and reps.

some people think the polls they like are better than others, if you like a certain poll than listen to it. But just remember yours is no better than anyone elses. You say whatever helps you peeps sleep better at night, and I will say that the same can be said to you.

Obama bests Romney by 35 points (58 percent to 23 percent) on the question of which candidate is more likeable, and by 22 points (52 percent to 30 percent) on caring about average people.

I will say america's got that one right. Romney is a moron, I mean mormon.

In addition, a majority of voters (51 percent) view the former Massachusetts governor’s approach to issues as being 'out of step' with most Americans’ thinking. By comparison, 54 percent say Obama’s positions are 'in the mainstream.'”

Romney won't be able to significantly change these perceptions before the election in November. He better hope his mega-rich backers like the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson can buy the election for him with the massive sums they will spend.

They have already started. What do you think all this voter suppression is about. Just like a dictatorship if you can't win with the voters, don't allow the people to vote.

Republicans want to start wars and kill all over the world claiming to spread democracy, while killing the right to vote at home.

The republicans tell us we can't have reasonable gun laws because one American might lose their rights to guns. But then have no problems trampling on millions of people and their constitutional guaranteed right to vote.

It's important to remember the verifiable, historical, facts...

Remember the day… January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress: At the time: The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77 The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5% The Unemployment rate was 4.6%. Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!

January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee. The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy? BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!!!

THANK YOU DEMOCRATS for taking us from 3.5 GDP, 4.6% Unemployment and the DOW Jones the same as it was several years ago… to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOS!

Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001, because it was financially risky for the U.S. economy, but no one was listening. In addition, the economy was in a recession when Bush took over. The tech bubble burst on March 10, 2000. Terrorists attacked US soil on 9/11/2001. Katrina hit the Southern coast in Sept of 2005. These natural disasters and hangovers from the previous administration cost the economy trillions.

Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 &2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009. ObaMao also SUED banks to give mortgage loans to losers and won. Don’t forget that he was legal counsel for ACORN, a lowlife scum operation that is tied to all kinds of criminal activity including voter fraud and working with pimps to get their underage prostitutes homes to do their work from.

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.

The economy was the very best it had ever been until the Democrats took over congress. Argue with facts all you want, it'll just show your lack of mental capacity and comprehension abilities. It's known as a LIBotomy. When liberalism succeeds, America fails.

Steve, if bush was doing such a good job, just how did we go from a surplus left by Clinton to the largest deficit in the history of our country in 8 years? Also bush inherited a good economy with low unemployment.

If you look at the numbers President Obama has already created more jobs in 4 years than bush did in 8.

Tax cuts don't create jobs they create deficits. So those aren't job creators the republicans are protecting at the cost of our economy they are the deficit creators.

                              @Americans First,

Why do you come here and just spread B.S.? Clinton NEVER had a surplus. Granted he only added 1.5 trillion to the debt. But every year in office the debt did increase. From 1995-2000 the Congress was controlled by Republicans. That tells you that republicans will work with the President. With Obama, it's not about the President, it is about the Presidents POLICIES and the destruction Obama is doing to this country. How does a President going on 4 years never produce a budget? His last attempt was so bad, it was voted down 97-0. The DEMS would not even vote for it. Enough with the whining the Repubs are blocking everything.

                              Math is hard!

But even if we remove Social Security from the equation, there was a surplus of $1.9 billion in fiscal 1999 and $86.4 billion in fiscal 2000.

Layton, I'll bet you explained to your parents about how ACA takes money from Medicare and applies it to ACA to, right? What this has done is essentially tell doctors that this is all your worth and this is all your getting. Doctors are going to stop all together or severely limit the amount of Medicare patients they see. This will then limit their care. You've probably explained to them that some of the money that's been saved in prescription drug costs is because our seniors are being denied medications, right? My mother-in-law recently passed away and was denied a prescription pill form of chemotherapy, so if your thinking of telling me that this isn't happening I call BS to you... I lived it, breathed it and watched it go on..

As far as the Ryan plan, got any other suggestions? Personally, I'm more concerned that there won't be ANY money there for me if they don't do something to fix it. Like I said, what are your suggestions to fix the mess we have on our hands?

Lastly, I would like you to explain to me and every other taxpayer why Obama lied to us and stated over and over that ACA was not a tax? Don't even begin to tell me that ACA is only a tax on those that don't carry health insurance, I would just ask you to explain the increased local, county and state taxes that have to be implemented in order to pay for the increase in the Medicaid recipients. Not to mention the increase in deductibles, co-pays and premiums so that women like Ms Fluke can run around a college campus, impersonating a rabbit, for what she terms as FREE BIRTH CONTROL.

Layton, I am a baby boomer and I know that without funding reforms, medicare will cease to exist for anyone. Might as well decide now what discretionary spending programs you want to end to maintain medicare funding without reforms.

Don't you all know that the young people will be more than happy to pay the living expense that social security now pays(average over $1200 per month) , medical bills that medicare now pays and the nursing home care they may need. No problem out of the mininum wages some people will have and that will be cut when the Repubs Teaparty takes control.

Clayton, most seniors can not afford to pay for a nursing home right now. A large percentage of seniors that are living in nursing homes are able to stay there because they're handing over practically all of their social security checks and have qualified for MEDICAID to supplement what isn't paid for with their SS checks. So essentially we are already paying for it (via taxes), no matter what your income status is. Last time I knew, MEDICARE doesn't pay for nursing home care unless it's for a short period such as for physical therapy. Nice try though.. Now what else do you want to use to scare our senior citizens?

I find it rather odd that our first lady runs around the country protesting obesity and managed to get schools to serve what they term as "healthy lunches" and ACA doesn't pay for weight loss supplements (diet pills). Obesity has been proved to cause a multitude of other health issues, such as diabetes, and we're worried that women aren't going to get birth control. Birth control has always been covered in any health insurance plan that I've ever been enrolled in since I entered the workforce over 25 years ago. Were you aware that you can not use any funds in your self paid flex spending account to pay for weight loss aids?

Ellie Mae Clampett (great name ... as we all know that little one didn't have a thought in her brain and you use it ... sigh.... ) as for this ...

Layton, I'll bet you explained to your parents about how ACA takes money from Medicare and applies it to ACA

My parents are very, VERY thankful that their evaluations are now covered. Did you know Miss Ellie Mae that prior to the ACA only ONE evaluation per year was covered under Medicaid? Be that an eye evaluation, a breast exam, or a colonoscopy. My parents are very thankful for the ACA. As is my daughter who is in college and continues to be covered under my insurance. You need to walk out on the street in your neighborhood and actually see who does and does not benefit from the ACA. I'm guessing Congress's approval rating has a BOATLOAD to do with them continually voting against the ACA when it has already benefited so many in this great country.

And american ... don't live in fear. I know funding reforms need to occur but I trust the President to handle this. I don't want some corporate raider to take the funds that I have paid in since I was 14 (worked at an amusement park) and turn around and hand me a voucher. Yes, reforms need to take place, but tossing everything to the private sector (vultures!) is not going to happen under a Democratic President.

Diet pills are nothing more than prescription speed. If you need to lose weight Ellie Mae, I would suggest an evaluation by your doctor (which is covered under the ACA) and then modifying your diet and exercise. Talk about LAZY!

Reserach shows that conservative leaning folks, like you mock, give much more to charity than their liberal counterparts. Our church just had a big fundraiser for orphans in Haiti. We have several friends who have adopted children of all races and origins. Tired of stupid people making ignorant claims based on their own narrow ideas!!

A teacher asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Obama fans.

Not really knowing what an Obama fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands except for Little Johnny ..

The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different... again. Little Johnny said, "Because I'm not an Obama fan."

The teacher asked, "Why aren't you a fan of Obama?" Johnny said, "Because I'm a Republican."

The teacher asked him why he's a Republican. Little Johnny answered, "Well, my Mom's a Republican and my Dad's a Republican, so I'm a Republican." Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, "If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?"

With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, "That would make me an Obama fan."

To make this clear , the choice is between death or Obama and misery whic is Romney . This is no chokee .

As most of you have not had your Medicare stolen from you like I have , which result is death , I guess you will pick Obama . The big thing about Obama is that he is taking from the contractually entitled . Many of you think that Obama Medicare for children is OK . It is not , it thanks to Obama is an inferior medical coverage . Obama made it this way with the rest of the irresponsible and criminally negligent democrats .

The people that are voting for Obama don't know what they are giving away Steve. He is our first Imperialist President. Without going through proper channels of Congress he just either decides to enforce a law or disavow it. They love it now but what will happen if a Repub or Conservative did the same thing? We are on the brink of losing our freedom and yet the fools love it. I see a civil war in the near future if things don't change.

What do you think we will be giving up voting for a republican?

First women give up the right to decide about her own body. Women give up the right to be first class citizens.

If you want to give up medicare then vote for a republican.

If you want to give up social security then vote for a republican.

If you want to give up care for our wounded veterans for more tax cuts for Romney then vote for a republican.

If you want to see American children starve then vote for a republican.

If you want to give up clean air to breathe then vote for a republican.

If you want to give up clean water to drink then vote for a republican.

If you want to give up a government that protects us from corporations then vote for a republican.

If you want to give up a living wage and all the benefits that unions have brought us then vote for a republican.

If you want to lose your right to birth control then vote for a republican.

Most of all if you want to lose your right to a democracy and our rights to vote then vote for a republican.

I think if the republicans can vote women into second class citizens with government in control of her body that women's right to vote will be what the republicans get rid of next.

Want to lose your rights and freedom, vote for a republican.

After 4 years, the debt has inceased by 6 trillion dollars, the unemployment is still above 8% and is now considered normal? Food stamp program is very successful. Unemployment checks are booming, the people who think things are bad are growing, is this what makes a presiden successful? Every recession in the history of this country has shown improvement by the 3 year (except FDR, of which plan Obama seems to be following). What makes it worse is he had two years to get anything he wanted, Immagration, tax increases for the rich, and he decided on government control of healthcare. Most of which will take effect ager he leaves office, with any luck.

Repubs on 7-19-12 blocked taking away tax breaks from companies that outsource jobs from America. In the same bill repubs blocked giving tax breaks to companies bringing jobs back to AMERICA!WHY DO REPUBS HATE AMERICAN WORKERS? Because the want profits offshore so they can hide their profits without paying any taxes on them$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Repubs blocked bill to remove Big Oil subsidies even when Big Oil execs testified they did not need them!

Rob, that is the garbage the republicans are pushing. But the truth is that the republicans have blocked anything that would create jobs or bring our economy up.

You want to blame President Obama for failure of his policies that the republicans would never let be implemented. All to bring President Obama down and prove to the superior whites that those black men just aren't up to the challenge.

I have a job, I don't give a rat's behind about the unemployed. The work force is gonna shrink in about 5-6 years and the rate will go down. ...Also, romney backs off on iillegals in the general election and was already for obama care in mass. So now, he is going to cut taxes? I mean, does he bring anything to the table outside of not being obama? You have to wonder. I mean, don't get me wrong, obama su cks and is a lousy executive but if your not going to do anything except status quo on govenment spending on defense and big ticket items, why should I elect you. Romney , needs to fire his campaign manager and start acting like an adult. Can't come up with another 3 years of tax returns just to put out a fire? Obama forged a birth certificate and got away with it..... I mean, whats going on with this liberal. Who wants to be president.

Do tell us just exactly what has he done to the constitution? Without a 2/3 vote I don't think our President can do anything to the constitution.

                                    What freedom have you lost?

But for sure if the republicans win women will lose their freedom to decide if and when she will have children. Wouldn't you feel safe with the government between you and your doctor with no concern for the mother only for the egg she carries?

But once that egg is born, it can starve to death for all the republicans care. That egg can grow up and go and fight in our wars and come home wounded and the republicans would deny the wounded veteran care for more tax cuts for Romney and his rich friends.

A vote for Romney is a vote for the 1% deficit creators and their tax cuts.

                                      - Most consecutive months of >8% unemployment in the history of the U.S.

                                      - Worst real estate debacle since the Great Depression
                                      - Worst post-recession economic recovery since WWII
                                      - Highest number of home foreclosures in the history of the U.S.
                                      - The highest amount of debt ever recorded in the U.S. ($15 trillion)

@supercole, I believe that was the whole idea of the stimulus to get folks back to work. also you need to realize that our fellow americans that are receiving foodstamps right now are the hardworking middleclass who paid taxes before Bush destroyed them and they lost everything. I am sure most folks would prefer working since many people like my 82 year old mom who worked two jobs all her life, had to leave her job before getting her full retirement to take care of her mom and only gets 35 dollars of foodstamps. WHy not save your criticizm for the wealthy entitlement receivers who have not created any jobs as they promised

Bush destroyed NOTHING you stupid liberal! The economy was GREAT under Bush! I'll take another 8 years of that! When the DEMONRATS got control of the Congress in 2006, IT ONLY TOOK THEM TWO YEARS TO SINK THE ECONOMY! And Bush tried to get Congress to deal with Freddie and Fannie, and SAID THERE WOULD BE A CRISIS IF WE DIDN'T. Who stonewalled and accused Republicans of "racism"??? Why that flaming Sodomite drug-dealer Barney Frank, and other demon-rats! Frank said the economy was FINE in 2006 and that NOTHING LIKE what the Republicans warned of was possible. That lying fruit-cake wrote these stupid laws in the 1990s with Chris Dodd and Bill Clinton THEY ARE THE ONES WHO CAUSED THE FINANCIAL CRISIS! Yes DEMOCRATS DID THIS AND NOW THEY LIE AND SAY BUSH DID IT. What worthless pieces of manure! What wicked, criminal PIGS! They belong in jail AFTER A PUBLIC WHIPPING!
