NBC/WSJ poll: Voters split on Ryan

According to the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 22 percent of registered voters say Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan to be his running mate makes them more likely to vote for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

That's compared with 23 percent who say the Ryan pick makes them less likely to vote for Romney, and 54 percent who say the new running mate doesn’t affect their vote either way.

These numbers suggest the Ryan pick has had less of an impact on voters than previous running mates have had.

In 2008, 24 percent in the NBC/WSJ poll said Joe Biden made them more likely to vote for Barack Obama, versus 16 percent who said he made them less likely to vote for the Democratic ticket.

The margins for Sarah Palin in 2008 (34 percent more likely vs. 25 percent less likely), John Edwards in 2004 (28 percent vs. 7 percent), and Joe Lieberman in 2000 (20 percent vs. 7 percent) were also bigger than Ryan's.

The closest Ryan’s margin comes to is Dick Cheney’s in 2000 (16 percent more likely vs. 14 percent less likely).

In the poll’s feeling thermometer, moreover, Ryan’s favorable/unfavorable score stands at 33 percent/32 percent.

Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who co-conducted this survey with GOP pollster Bill McInturff, attributes Ryan’s mixed numbers to today’s increasingly partisan divide, with Republicans backing him, Democrats opposing him and independents fairly divided.

The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted Aug. 16-20 of 1,000 registered voters (300 reached by cell phone) -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.

@ GODGRAVITON, You did as you should have done to make sure your business was successful, and you want to come on this page and get props for that? You know what Obama meant when he said that and your dumb ass party took it out of context like they always do. Yeah, you worked hard, and kept your business from failing, but with out the consumer, you'd have nothing. So keep on with the "I built this" nonsense. And if working so hard to keep your business was such a chore, you should have went and worked for one of these companies that are firing US workers and shipping those jobs over seas. Knock it off...

I'm learning not to take what Obama says at face value. It seems that you always need to try to read between the lines. But, I shouldn't expect him to talk straight - that's what lawyers do.

    In the business world I know personally as a CEO of a small business for the last 15 years, the notion 'to "build-up" a business' refers to the owners success in 'building' the demand and service of that business. Any 'businessman' would know this...the terms does not describe constructing the building and inherent support services which is called "start-up" and includes internet etc;
Spin is gonna destroy us all....

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the GI Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.

This is what the president actually said in context. Yes he said you didn't build that, but he was referring to the American system. And it is true we are all in this together.

      The people are split,..

"50% think Ryan is a self-serving, corporate welfare elitist and they like it".

"50% think Ryan is a self-serving, corporate welfare elitist and they don't"

...but there is one thing that everyone can see about Ryan and agree on.

If you are a millionaire, I can't blame you for doing what is right for you and voting for Romney and Ryan.

I remain totally amazed at the stupidity of the American voter!! How the HELL did you get that way. This election shouldnt even be close!

Just in the last 11 years, we've had a preplanned war, which tried to justify by the national tragedy of 911.

"Find me a way to link this to Iraq" Bush to Richard Clarke. The result, 5000 dead soldiers, 13000+ maimed for life, thousands of cases of PTSD, 100,000 dead iraquis while contractors and bush/cheney cronies made hundred of billions in government contracts. That's OUR MONEY THEY TOOK!

We've had about $6T added to our national -- and it was added to the reagan/bush debt--- All done DELIBERATELY, following the GOP plan called "starve the beast. The goal was to privatize SS and Medicare! sound familiar?? That is EXACTLY what the GOP is attempting to do now, after they successfully starved the beast to the tune of $16T. ( BTW, deliberately endangering our national security and financial stability, which this debt does, is treason) The GOP's solution to the debt is to hand all that money over to private interests, the SAME people who crashed the economy.

Then we have the voter ID laws, meant to prevent voter fraud among illegals (read Latinos) and African Americans, of which VERY few cases have EVER been proved. OF course , prior to all this, the GOP stole the FL election in 2000 when Katherine Harris purged 40,000 felons from FL voting rolls, about 80% of whom turn out NOT to be felons but DID consist of mostly African American men. Then there was Ohio in 2004, where independent computer and math experts concluded that the chances of the exit polls being SO DIFFERENT from "vote totals" was .01%--that is, impossible. Diebold promised, Diebold delivered--every single question mark was resolved in favor of bush.

The GOP crashed the economy. NOW the have the cojones to try to sabotage the recovery, according to a plan developed at a meeting on Jan.20, 2009 ( Inauguration Day). This has been documented. ( see Robert Draper's book) Finally, our elections are now up for sale to the highest bidder.

What the HELL is wrong with you people??? You think Republicans care a fig about you??? think again. Do NOT listen to what Republicans are telling you. WATCH what they are doing!! That will go a LONG way towards not making dumb decision over and over in the voting booth. Havent we had ENOUGH of this republican party? havent they dont enough damage to this great country. Their record, if you just look at it, shows that they consistently worship at the altar of the money and corporate elite while giving Joe America the finger.

Wake up America. Your country is being stolen right from under your noses. Based on what you ahve seen, do you REALLY want Republicans back in control. THEY are the ones who created almost ALL of the disasters we now face!

Race itself is not the issue.

It is relevant to consider Ryan's record on civil rights and policies that affect the poor, considering that he obviously has close ties to at least some African Americans. It is also relevant to see how, if at all, the extreme right wing conservative base will react.

The President has already proposed the American Jobs Act. Republicans have held up passage on the full bill and congress is now working on trying to pass it piece by piece.

Despite Republican obstructionism, we have still had 29 consecutive months of job growth, 4.5 million new jobs added.

              http://www.americanjobsact.com/

Ryan's record on civil rights and the poor is absolutely relevant. His budget plan will disproportionately affect African Americans if the drastic budget cuts he seeks are implemented.

"Ryan opposed NAACP-supported issues, including funding support for the Special Supplemental Assistance Program for Women, Infants and Children; continued funding to settle the “Pigford II” racial discrimination lawsuit between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Black Farmers; and support for the Election Assistance Commission."

Ryan is no deficit hawk. He is a millionaire who believes in Ayn Rand's philosphy of sefishness even as he disavows her atheistic philosophy. He wants taxcuts for himself at everyone else's expense. His voting record shows him to not be a deficit hawk. He voted for every spending bill the Bush administration asked for. He likes the title of deficit hawk but it is a false title. Also his extreme views on contraception and abortion are almost word for word Todd Akins. He was at one time a co-sponsor of a personhood bill that gave personhood to a fertiliized egg and was against abortions even in the case of rape and incest. As for his balanced budget, that would only occur in 2030 if all budget assumptions were correct.

I'll start to read a post that makes some good points and then the writer goes into the "Marxist" "fascist" "socialistic" jargon and I discard what I've read. Now, honestly, would the post convince me to vote for R/R, no as the GOP is unappealing to me in several ways. But I might understand a little better their arguement and why they resist some of the Democratic ideas so much. We need better communication in this country. By the way, some of the Democratic left also sprinkle their posts with namecalling nonsense, too. Not good either way.

Ryan has been in the House for 7 terms or 14 years. The Tea Party movement has been in existence for a little over 3 years. Ryan is your leader only because he saw a movement that could further his career and he got in front of it. It was a wise political move but rest assured, just like the pro-life movement, Ryan will walk back from the Tea Party as soon as it doesn't help his career. In high school Ryans nickname was Brownnoser. Mark my words, he will throw anyone under the bus to advance his career. Look how he is now walking back his pre-life stance to further his career.

I am glad Obama's campaign is hitting Ryan on more than just medicare. His whole "governing" philosophy is a sham. He rubber-stamped Bush's entire administration and then miraculously found "deficit religion" just as Bush left the country in ruin and headed off to Texas. It's hard to believe which one - him or Romney - is the more cynical.

If the MSM had been willing to do their jobs instead being desirous of keeping a horse-race going and scared of being labeled "Pro-Obama", this race would be over.

Obama is way ahead of Romney with women-By about 15 points, and that number will go up thanks to the Ryan pick.

Everyone focuses on just medicare. I am glad this Akin debacle has come up. It will shine a light on Ryan's extreme beliefs on abortion, and there is a lot more where that came from.

I could care less if Jesus Christ was running with Romney. Until I see at least 5 years of his tax returns I'll never vote for him. I want to know if Willard Mitt Romney values greed over paying his fair share to the Country he earned his money in and wants to be the leader of.

willie53.....If you were to get five years of his tax returns, would you even know how to read them?

What difference would it make if he did present even 20 years of them?

What does any of this have to do with his ability to run the country?

One thing for sure....your obamanation hasn't produced anything in 4 years....do you want 4 more yrs of nothing?

Uncle Pincho, thank you for being so condescending (just like your guy Romney) in assuming that we wouldn't be able to understand Romney's tax returns.

The difference it makes is it will show:

                              a) if he took the amnesty for Swiss bank account holders (just because the gov't didn't press charges against those people doesn't mean what they did wasn't illegal).

                              b) it will show if he filed as CEO etc of Bain when he said he wasn't.

                              c) it will show how his money was invested (did he bet against his country like Cantor did?),.

                              d) does he invest his money into industries that go against the republican platform (this is why I think he won't divulge his tax returns)

With regard to getting anything done, as said by numerous republicans their only goal the last 4 years was to not let him get anything done. They have achieved that goal and try to make it seem like it is President Obama who failed but most people see that it is the republican congress people that failed their constituents and country by putting party over what is best for the nation.

Selecting Ryan as VP is a statement and lesson from a very successful leader as to what meaningful delegation is all about
The ability to delegate is one of the primary attributes of a good leader, as historically, one of the largest hurdles any Boss endures is placing the wrong person in the right job (please note the current sycophancy compacted around our President.

Voters split on Ryan's plan to reinstate George W Bush's policies on steroids... as if we can afford a redo.

PS : Romney is a total clown.

If elected ......... Romney AND Ryan ..... intend to kill Obamacare first week or so , and then make abortion illegal , so wemon will have babies with no ins. Pay out more money on taxes . not have the Pearl Grant for EDUCATION to raise the child and with Birth Control Pills being illegal stand by for more kids , And with out Planned Parent Hood may have a serious desease or medical problem with out knowing it , And then of course that woman may have to take in her parents after they lose their home to the hospital to pay for their doctor bill since they wont have medical ins. due to pre-existing conditions , Meanwhile GOD will punish America for electing Non Christian Nephilims into office , .......... only in America .

It figures.....NBC is a bunch of liers and so is their "dishonest" polls.

They want so badly for us to believe their "corny" poll. This is an orginization that fakes journalism, when in fact, they wouldn't know it if it was to reach up and bite them in the a$$!

If the polls showed Romney ahead the story wouldn't even be reported by NBCNews.

I guess it depends on which poll you pick. Remember Dewey was FAR ahead in the polls and he didn't win.
