NBC/WSJ poll: Voters split on Ryan

According to the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 22 percent of registered voters say Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan to be his running mate makes them more likely to vote for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

That's compared with 23 percent who say the Ryan pick makes them less likely to vote for Romney, and 54 percent who say the new running mate doesn’t affect their vote either way.

These numbers suggest the Ryan pick has had less of an impact on voters than previous running mates have had.

In 2008, 24 percent in the NBC/WSJ poll said Joe Biden made them more likely to vote for Barack Obama, versus 16 percent who said he made them less likely to vote for the Democratic ticket.

The margins for Sarah Palin in 2008 (34 percent more likely vs. 25 percent less likely), John Edwards in 2004 (28 percent vs. 7 percent), and Joe Lieberman in 2000 (20 percent vs. 7 percent) were also bigger than Ryan's.

The closest Ryan’s margin comes to is Dick Cheney’s in 2000 (16 percent more likely vs. 14 percent less likely).

In the poll’s feeling thermometer, moreover, Ryan’s favorable/unfavorable score stands at 33 percent/32 percent.

Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who co-conducted this survey with GOP pollster Bill McInturff, attributes Ryan’s mixed numbers to today’s increasingly partisan divide, with Republicans backing him, Democrats opposing him and independents fairly divided.

The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted Aug. 16-20 of 1,000 registered voters (300 reached by cell phone) -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.

The real question is, "Does the Ryan pick generate any new votes?" No, it does not. Does it frighten Seniors, Women, moderates and independents? Yes it does. Conclusion: It was a very bad pick.

Romney/Ryan Medicare plan = Voucher / Groupon

Romney/Ryan Social Security plan = puts your money in the stock market (Jeesh...)

Romney/Ryan budget plan = same old GOP smoke and mirrors.

GOP has NEVER had a balanced budget EVER. Ryan plan might balance budget after 28 YEARS !! Gimme a break.

The only balanced budget we ever had was the Clinton budget.

You mean how closed their doughnut hole and extended Medicare out to 8 yrs? The money shifted won't affect the seniors at all, but it will penalize fraud. I can see why the Republicans would be upset with that.

Medicare: President Obama SAVED $700 Billion in waste and fraud in the system - and used it to strengthen and expand Medicare.

The beneficiaries are not affected in any way. Romney and Ryan are lying about Medicare.

What they're saying doesn't make sense either, when you consider they are always crying about "waste and fraud".

Then they lie and say the President is "cutting". Even though he is NOT cutting seniors, the irony is the Romney-Ryan/GOP love to CUT safety nets.

Meanwhile the two GOP liar-in-chiefs would turn Medicare into dead wood, before you could blink.

Now, all of a sudden, every Republican/Tea Tool has awoken from their slumber to scream, "Deficits DO MATTER!! OMG lower the deficit, lower the deficit!!!!". LOL!!!

But lets remember this:

It takes alot of time repair the damage from Bush and his gang of neo-con nation wreckers and con-men inflicted on America and Americans.

George W. Bush inherited a strong economy, a budget surplus and a nation at peace....

Eight years later the GOP destroyed the country through their malfeasance and naked greed through the Bush Administration debacle......the worst President in history.

Bush left Obama with a shattered economy, a trillion dollar deficit, Medicare Part D (unfunded), Bush tax cuts (unfunded) and two useless wars (unfunded).

ALSO....the GOP/Tea Tards have filibustered Obama more in the past 4 years than all of the past 50 years combined!!

I took a look at the Ryan plan (the second version he modified with some Democrat called Wyden) and it has some possibilities. It calls for a voucher system like his first plan, but the rate would be set by a bidding system. The second-lowest bid for private coverage equivalent to Medicare is what the voucher would pay. If you want a more expensive plan, you pay the difference. And you can even opt to have traditional Medicare instead if you prefer.

This sounds like a way to incentivize private companies to compete with Medicare to get a piece of the govt healthcare pie, although I'm not sure it would save very much money, just transfer some Medicare recipients to a private program instead.

That's compared with 23 percent who say the Ryan pick makes them less likely to vote for Romney, and 54 percent who say the new running mate doesn't affect their vote either way.

Let's break this down:

22% who are more likely to vote for Romney with Ryan on the ticket are the religious radicals who hijacked the Republican Party.

23% who are less likely to vote for Romney now are Independents and moderate Republicans, some of whom were already wary of Romney.

54% who say it makes no difference are Democrats and Independents who were already going to vote for Obama/Biden.

Haters who would vote against the president even if Hitler was running on the GOP ticket are part of the 22% or 54%, but not a large part of the 54%.

AG99 -- Why would anyone not choose traditional Medicare? What does the Ryan plan do to reduce skyrocketing health care costs? "Patient centered" voodoo? Uh no -- Just like his plan that doesn't balance the budget, this is rubbish. Also, these morons leave out any way to increase revenue for anything--they just want to cut taxes, especially their own taxes. There are many better solutions being offered by the Dems.

"AG99 -- Why would anyone not choose traditional Medicare? What does the Ryan plan do to reduce skyrocketing health care costs?"

I imagine the idea is for private companies to make money by offering a better plan than Medicare for cheaper. That in turn would reduce costs as companies competed to provide such a plan.

I don't know if it would work, but it's an interesting idea. As for the better Democrat plans, I haven't seen any yet because no one will put one out there. Proposing any sort of change to Medicare (or SS) is considered political death. I give Ryan and Wyden credit for at least trying.

For the comments about seniors being scared of Obamacare, I know at least a dozen relatives that are registered Republicans that will either not be voting or will be voting for Obama! Seniors don't like the sound of a voucher program, even if they will be effected or not!

My Predictions:

- It will be a close race (Bush/Kerry close)

- Obama will win a slight majority of swing states, and make gains in traditionally conservative states

- States with the biggest impact this time around; PA, VA, & NC

- There will definitely be a recount

- Romney not releasing his tax records will become his biggest mistake

- Obama ultimately wins

I see the fascist liberals are out in force spreading their lies. It is Obama the stole $500,000,000,000 from seniors, there is no way around that and no way to excuse it. It was not his money, much as socialist liberals would like to think, it was earmarked for seniors.

Idiot Obama and his minions in congress want Medicare to go bankrupt, it's the only conclusion one can rationalize considering the don't want to change anything. Ryan, on the other hand is trying to save it. I have read the Ryan plan and those that say it hurts current or future seniors are pathetic liars. It's doing nothing that will rape seniors and that is what liberals support.

The very fact socialists fear him automatically wins Ryan my vote. We can't survive four more years of the Marxist in chief.

I urge everyone on the fence about Romney to google "Sociopath".. He has a classic form of this characteristic.

This is probably why he was so good at lying and how he can look a reporter right in the eyes and lie outright, even when there is video evidence to the contrary.

these excerpts from sociopathicstyle.com/traits/classic.htm

Sociopath can lie without remorse or embarrassment

5. CONNING AND MANIPULATIVENESS- the use of deceit and deception to cheat, con, or defraud others for personal gain; distinguished from Item #4 in the degree to which exploitation and callous ruthlessness is present, as reflected in a lack of concern for the feelings and suffering of one's victims.

Sociopaths don't have empathy with other people or animals

6. LACK OF REMORSE OR GUILT -- a lack of feelings or concern for the losses, pain, and suffering of victims; a tendency to be unconcerned, dispassionate, coldhearted, and un empathic. This item is usually demonstrated by a disdain for one's victims.

7. SHALLOW AFFECT -- emotional poverty or a limited range or depth of feelings; interpersonal coldness in spite of signs of open gregariousness.

8. CALLOUSNESS and LACK OF EMPATHY -- a lack of feelings toward people in general; cold, contemptuous, inconsiderate, and tactless.

Everything was scripted from start to finish including the people asking the questions. All propaganda , sound bites and very bad jokes ,no specifics, with lines like " I'm going to give you good paying jobs" "I'm going to give you great health care" "I'm going to pay down the deficit" "I'm not going to pass any debt to your children and grandchildren". I couldn't find one true fact or specific in any of their carnival barking and yet their audiences acted like teenage girls at the first Beatles concert. These guys are Moronic corporate puppets, No wonder there's no bump. Intelligent people are passing on this freak show. The GOP has lost it's marbles and all rationale :o~~~~~

AG99, because of the liability to insurance companies that comes with insuring seniors, I would hardly think any private insurance companies would make money on seniors. That is why most seniors could not get insurance through private companies or good access to healthcare before Medicare was begun and why Medicare was started. Also, private companies have more expenses than Medicare with advertising, needing to make profits for investors, higher corporate-head salaries, etc. I would imagine with Ryan's second plan that offers Medicare, that Medicare may be the cheapest plan offered, because either private companies will raise their rates very high to still make a profit after the high cost of seniors' healthcare to them, or, worse yet, they will pass seniors' high expenses on to the younger people they insure. Ryan's healthcare plans are either disastrous to future seniors (as with his first bill/plan) or just make no sense (as with his second bill/plan).

Actually, Obama's is the only plan that does something to cut the cost of Medicare and healthcare and does it immediately as needed by cutting $400-$600 billion in 10 years to healthcare providers while not adding any expense to seniors. Many healthcare providers/hospitals are working on methods to reduce costs already. This is also the only incentive out there to help curb healthcare inflation by this reduction in Medicare payments to providers and by mandating insurance for most, thus reducing inflation in healthcare due to the costs of the unpaid bills of the huge percentage of uninsured.

I know of some people who are genuinely worried that Romney/Ryan may repeal all of ACA (particularly its measures that protect the consumer) except the mandate, because the Obama mandate is modeled after Romney's mandate in Massachusetts.

Sorry, when I first read the headline I thought it said "Voters SPIT on Ryan". A little mental slip there I'm afraid. But I digress....

Wow, what anemic numbers. Mitt has got to be having second thoughts. He didn't look all that pleased on August 12 when he announced Ryan as his running mate and I'll bet he's really worried now. These numbers are actually weaker than I thought they would be and I never thought they would be great.

    Shoulda stayed with T-paw Mitt.

But here's the big question of the day: Is God trying to send the GOP a message by aiming "ISAAC" at Tampa, Florida?

I thing you RWNJ's better mend your evil ways!

The NY Times is a left held, well left stocked organization. Do you really think they would say anything different.

Ap just released a poll on RCP. Obama 47, Romney 46. They used 31% Democrats, Republicans 23%, and Independents 30%, 15% other? That's a 8 point democrat advantage, when the 2008 turnout was Democrats +6% and 2010 was +3%.

Me thinks a fix is in.

The number is actually per the CBO $741 Billion, but there is $15 Billion offset on something making the actual total $716 Billion.

The Biggest Savings $420 Billion by cutting the rates of payments to doctors and medical facilities. Nice cut seeing they are already paid less than the actual costs of services.

Second Biggest Savings $141 Billion by eliminating the popular Senior bridge insurance program. That program ends on October 1. The "smarter than you" Obama suddenly realized the program ended 1 month before the election so he took $30 Billion out of the Women's Contraception program to fund a new "temporary trial program" to replace the bridge program for a couple of months, so the senior vote would stay with Obama.

The remaining savings are from eliminating a few known expensive, ineffective treatments, eliminating alternate treatment choices that cost a little more, and believing they can eliminate some fraud.

Since no bump yet, I suspect the Ryan pick was a mistake. He did it to appease the far right much like McCain did when he picked Sarah Palin. Not a bright idea. Also Ryan appears genuine when he speaks and appears a likable guy in stark contrast to the next guy who appears on the stage. He makes Romney appear more plastic than ever. Not a good thing for Romney but a great thing for the Obama 2012 campaign.

Here is a just in example of how a pollster can jade a poll results. PPP released poll on Akin and McCaskill.

Akins 44, McCaskill 43. To get that number, they used 37% Republicans, 30% Democrats.

          1. Obama has been fought every step of the way by the entire Republican Congress, with the notable exception of Sen. Snow (who is leaving the senate which effectively ends the era of moderate Republicans).

          2. When you say the Fed has very little control on women's health issues you must be referring to the Federal Reserve, in which case you would be correct. If on the other hand you are referring to the Federal Government consisting of the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branches...you are either ignorant or completely out of your mind! Those who: 1) pass and fund the laws...2) enact and enforce the laws...3) validate and preside over the laws ...have little control? ...really? It seems to me Roe v. Wade had a huge effect and pissed off a whole lot of conservatives because they couldn't prevent American Women from obtaining abortions. So I guess I'm not really clear as to how you define "very little control".

Dennis, I've seen you use the national polls frequently.

Second, The Gallup number is spelling trouble to Obama. It is done on Registered voters. What that means is the one on top has a better chance of winning. It means the get out the vote machine is going to have trouble because of a smaller pool is favorable to them.

BTW. In 60, 30 & 15 day cut-offs for polls, Obama wins. 30 & 60 days are nearly identical. 15 day obama's lead begins to disapear. In just the last 20 days, Romney wins, and that still includes some polls that are stuffing the polls with over represented democrat respondents.

Budgeting sure as hell is not Obama's forte now is it ? The U.S. is in the 4th year of Obama's financial debacle with the debt rising and never a vote for Obama's lame budget proposals !

Did Obama ever have a course in basic accounting ? Does he even KNOW what a budget is and what it is designed to do ? $5 trillion additional national debt and NO BUDGETS from Bam-Bam.

Still trying to rewrite history I see. Let's see, what was the "official" year marking the beginning of the economic disaster? ...oh yes, 2007. Who was President? Are you trying to tell us the economy went to hell overnight because Obama was running for President? Tell me Jim, how much of that $5 trillion is the cost of two wars (Bush kept off the books), Medicare Part D (unfunded), and his notorious tax cuts primarily for the wealthy (also unfunded)? And by the way, since when was it OK with Republicans to spend "unfunded" monies? Oh yes...since Ronald Reagen, and reinforced by Dick Cheney (remember "You know, Paul, Reagan proved deficits don't matter. We won the midterms."

I do not always agree with Ryan. However I think he is a good choice. He is dynamic, willing to take challenge, hard working, courageous and people person. He is good in his speeches and does not go hyper like Bidden.

Obama gave good speeches and won election. However his relations with all other leaders including his own party are virtually non existent. President who is not willing to establish good communication, whether people agree or not, cannot make healthy decisions and often cannot make any decisions. On International stage also Obama is not good communicators.

Presidents power is persuasion, understanding that all law makers are elected and part of decision making process. Obama is more aloof and well suited to autocratic rule than Democratic institutions of dialogue. Obama also has difficulties understanding many issues and his willingness to delegate on whole sale basis is not beneficial for the good legislation.

This is one of those blatantly false statements that you people pick up on Faux Noize and repeat, Goebbels-like, until people start to believe them.

Obama "made NO effort to involve the Republicans?" Did I imagine that while Obama was literally in the car on his way to meet with House Republicans to discuss the stimulus, Boehner circulated a memo instructing his members to vote against it?

Was the WH's forbearance for months while waiting for the bipartisan "Gang of Six" to come up with a health-care reform compromise a dream?

What a recent book revealed about GOP pollster Frank Luntz organizing an inauguration-day dinner of Republican party leaders that produced a pact to oppose and obstruct everything Obama did HOURS AFTER HE WAS SWORN IN? No, I didn't imagine any of these events.

Party always comes first for you people. You are a disgrace.

English not really your primary language I take it. Anyway I agree he could have shown greater leadership by exposing the "Anti-American" agreements made by the Republican members of Congress... had them declared enemies of the United States for as providing material aid to the enemy (bin Laden swore to bankrupt the US) ...and had them summarily rounded up for extraordinary rendition.

Now that's leadership vs his unsuccessful outreach efforts.

Therman--since we have increased government assistance in 70 programs to over a trillion dollars and have the highest level of poverty since the great depression and unemployment among the poor and minorities is much higher than the overall unemployment rate, I would hope we would cut assistance. We have already proven that the last 4 years under Obama havent been very good for this group, so wouldnt you think that Obama would be proposing cuts too as he thinks his economic policies would start working for them? Explain to me what Ryan would do to this group that could be worse than what Obama has done the last 4 years?

The real test will come in the VP debates. Biden is a great debater, but I don't know how Ryan would do. Palin was NOT good at debating if memory serves. Also, in the last debate, Biden had the upper-hand with a VERY disliked President at the end of his term. It will be interesting as I don't know if Biden will come off as likeable when compared to Ryan.

Actually we seniors find Medicare strenghtened under Obamacare and that Obamacare helps our kids and grandkids afford healthcare. I have a daughter with a preexisting condition that would prevent her from getting affordable insurance before Obamacare, now she has insurance and she can easily afford it. I can afford my suppliment insurance for my Medicare. If Ryan gets his way my supplimental insurance will be way out of reach and the insurance companies will be the only ones getting fat and sassy.

You people act like the President has some sort of magic wand that he waves and says presto and jobs are created. That is ridiculous. Congress needs to pass legislation that gives breaks to companies that bring jobs back from off shore, that hire in green technology and who hire veterans. Cuts alone nor increases in taxation alone will not solve the debt problem. We need an increase in revenue and a decrease in spending including Pentagon spending. There are jets they don't want and ships they don't want but we're spending the money anyway because it is pork for some Congressperson's district. A few extra bucks won't hurt the wealthy, inentives to hire won't hurt eithr. Trickle down has been tried for 30 years and it DOES NOT WORK. Okay so we tried it, some bought into it because they were sold the bill of goods by the "great communicator" and they believed him. No problem, people are often duped. Look at Congress being duped by Dubya in the lies they were told to get us into an unfunded, unnecessary war. It happens. So now we learn from our mistakes and move on. Making the same mistakes over and over again and expecting different results is stupid. So let's try something new. Lets raise revenues and cut spending. If that doesn't work we'll try something else. One thing for sure is tricle down doesn't work. Oh, and greed is NOT good.

So what is the Chuck Todd/MSNBC gurus trying to tell us with these polls. All the ones with high likely to vote for results were not elected and those with the lowest likely to vote for won. HMMMM!

Not to mention the ones with the best likely vs. unlikely had a mistress during his campaing, abandoned his wife and then tried to buy off the trouble when it all came to light.

Ryan was a horrible pick and only played to the extreme conservative base. In addition, Romney is so very much dislike by the American people because he has lied on a continuous basis and has not shown leadership. Ryan is the extreme radical conservative. Ryan is the true picture that Tom Akin represent. Romney/Ryan is the wrong persons to lead the America people because they do not represent all of America. They only represent the rich.

No one should be surprised with this poll. 1. Ryan's budget will dessimate the middle class - it will take money away from EPA, Education, Medicare/Medicaid and give it to the rich, 2. He scores badly with womean vote because of his position on rape and other women's health issues (such as contraceptives), 3. He would want to privatize social security, 4. He doesn't believe in giving a helping hand to the poor and under-priviledged (no food stamps, no aid of any kind to the poor (fend for yourself), no low interest loans for college education. He comes from a rich family and doesn't believe in giving any aid for people to pull their bootstraps.

            AJ:

During Obama rule average middlecalss lost 4000 dollars in wages per year.

That is lot more than reduction in taxes they will get.

Oh lord AJ, don't feed her facts.

Remember Republican campaign rule #8: "If you can't attack the message, attack the messenger".

Even democrats agree that President has not shown any leadership on any issue. He has just taken actions to help his re-election.

But economy, jobs, health care..just not good record. The Friedman who supported Obama in 2008 says Obama solutions are sub-par.

The President is not a dictator, he can only sign bills into law. If you feel that the solutions have been sub-par, it is because they have been watered down by Republicans in Congress whenever possible or simply blocked by filibusters.

Obviously you don't actually know any Democrats. You might have one or two working for you but you probably don't know them well enough to actually talk to them. But then they're employees, why would you talk to them?

By the way, both Romney and Ryan are supply-siders. Now perhaps your business doesn't need domestic demand to thrive, or perhaps you cater only to the wealthy...I don't know, but I do know "trickle-down" economics doesn't work. The only thing that trickles down to the middle class is yellow, wet and warm...doesn't smell nice either.

But i tell you, it isn't such a good note to start out soooo far behind the sarah in favorability. It might have been sarah's tenna fey eyeglasses. Her sense of vulnerability. Everybody would be pulling for her to succeed. Like when she was shooting at the moose in alaska. Bam. And the moose was still there. Like nothing happened. Bam. The same thing. Ok. High powered rifle again on the sandbags. Rifle reloaded by the standby hunters. Sarah took aim again and bam. The moose finally rolled over. Wow. It just goes to show. That if you try and try. Never give up. Anybody can do anything. And the moose or caribou. Said to be the very first to give its life for a presidential campaign.
