Akin allies: 'The only deadline is November'

Even as many in the GOP called on Congressman Todd Akin to resign from the Missouri Senate race following his inflammatory comments on rape, Akin allies remained defiant.

NBC News has learned that the Missouri Republican is in Ohio today. He is doing radio interviews and "more filming" for TV ads.

Sources around Akin dismiss the calls for him to withdraw by 5 pm Central time saying, "The only deadline is November."

Advisers say that the six-term Missouri congressman remains "confident that he can beat Claire McCaskill, and he's prepared to do it."

Despite intense pressure from national elected officials and conservative voices to exit the race, "This isn't stressful for Todd," says a close associate.

"This is a time for him to reach within, as he has, and stand up for what he has his entire life, what he believes in."

Advisers dismiss the critics as largely coming from Washington, adding that it's "easy to vilify someone you don't know" and claiming it's "not surprising for political figures to respond to the problem this way."

Akin is ignoring the non-elected conservatives, who are upset with him as well. His advisers push back that those critics "might have the opportunity to reconsider" and "re-evaluate" as Akin continues his campaign.

Team Akin also asserts that those "putting out releases" were never his constituency. Their chief defense is that Akin has been "authentic and transparent" in his apology and that he is "openly hurting for anyone he hurt" with his comments. The newly released ad is described as an effort to give voters an opportunity to "see his heart in this circumstance."

On the seemingly dire politics of staying in the race, Akin advisers assert, "The truth might work," referring to what they consider his sincere apology.

Projecting unusual confidence in the face of so much opposition, advisers even predicted that Akin will be sworn into office in January "stronger having endured and overcome."

And they claim he will consider this experience a "blessing," because Akin would have a new national audience for his grassroots causes and be better able to speak to people who believe the political process has "left them by the side of the road."

Who cares about Akin in November. We should all care about removing Obama in November.

Obama has stomped on the Constitution and needs to be removed. How about talking about something important like that NBC? How about talking about how Obama funneled tax dollars into the hands of his donors? How about how Obama is dividing this country?

The article is right about one thing. Only November matters.

It's five o'clock somewhere and Akin stays in the race. Then in November he can go home and seek unemployment. No Senate seat; No house seat.

Well done Claire. You supported President and will keep your seat, even in a red state.

Doubtless, Akin's .."more filming":

Means lying through his back teeth, via zero-fact Ads.

Romney and Ryan are disgracing themselves on welfare and Medicare Ads -

c/o Addled Adelson who who only wants to buy up his own government -- personally.

I still don't understand what Akin did wrong. He can put his views in the Akins/Ryan woman hate bill and that is Okay with the republicans, but if he says it on TV they try to run him out of the party. Freakin morons!

The only reason Mitt wants Akin to stop is because it keeps the topic alive and ties it to Ryan, and therefore Mitt himself. If everybody stops talking about it, it will just go away. If Akin stays in the race, everybody will keep talking about it.

Obama has stomped on the Constitution and needs to be removed.

George W. Bush stomped on the constitution far more than Obama. Sadly he was never removed before he trashed the American economy with his sad ideas about home ownership and deregulation!

How about talking about how Obama funneled tax dollars into the hands of his donors?

Dick Cheney funneled $Billions into the company he was still collecting a check from during his entire two terms as vice president - Halliburton.

How about how Obama is dividing this country?

Republicans are dividing this country with their deceit and their lies.

I know you got it in for Obama, but like he said, you can't just make stuff up. We had enough of that during the last Republican administration. And you can bet that the American voters remember all this, too!

EEngineer--its unfortunate but two wrongs dont make a right. There is no defending much of Bush presidency but allowing Obama to do the same under that defense, is just as bad. Bush didnt trash the economy with his ideas of housing and deregulation both parties did. Bush spent way too much money on two wars and a prescription drug plan while cutting taxes but Obama is doing just as much and making a bad situation worse. Obama is funnelling tons of money into his donors too like Soros and his Brazialian oil rights and there are tons of Solyndras. Neither person is right and we shouldnt allow Cheny, Busy or Obama this ability. You might think the GOP is dividing this country but no one before like Obama has turned being successful into a bad thing. His rhetoric about punishing the successful and his concepts of how business is built is beyond naive its dangerous. He is creating an entitlement country in which concepts like self reliance, personal accountability dont mean anything anymore all under the guise of trying to create equality of outcomes. I am sorry but I am never going to be Albert Pujols or Steve Jobs and I dont begrudge them one single penny. We need a new president someone who isnt an ideologue

I have no problem calling out anyone who uses personal attacks rather than substance to post. But since I voted for John Anderson, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton twice, Bush II, Kerry and then McCain in my lifetime and I am for gay marriage and pro choice, do I still qualify as a left wing nut job or a right wing nut job?

The FACT is Akin's positions are held by the entire Teapublican Party. They have simply managed to fly below the radar for too long now. There has been plenty of opportunity to vet Akin, and he won the primary fair and square. Just because it is inconvenient now for the entire GOP/TP ticket, too bad, own up.

Also, electing Romney/Ryan would mean the the entire clown car comes with them -- Michele Bachmann, Allen West, John Bolton, and you name it. Akin is just one of the many clowns. Say NO to the clowns -- throw them all out!

Advisers dismiss the critics as largely coming from Washington, adding that it's "easy to vilify someone you don't know"

Ha really, nice try, they don't know him? Akin is a six term congressman, republicans put this guy on the tech and science committee and he worked with Ryan on legislation on this very subject of redefining rape. This mans views are no surprise to republicans, they know full well who he is, he was on a Fox TV station saying what many republicans want to hear from their candidates, he actually thought this would help him, his statements were meant to reflect core principles for republicans. Republicans can't bury this guy fast enough, not because of his views, they have known full well what his view is, he just made political trouble for Romney, Ryan, and the whole GOP by being perfectly frank about his views in what he felt was the safety of a Fox TV interview. I'm glad it was a Fox station, so now maybe we don't have to hear people complain about the question that was being asked instead of the insane answer given.

I'm still trying to recover from the QUACKERY about "legitimate" rape preventing a woman from getting pregnant. It is all the more mind-bending to think someone this ignorant is on the Committee on Science and Technology -- Gawd, or Michele Bachmann on the Intelligence Committee.

What this tells me, and should indicate to other Americans, is the Republican Party has been crazier for longer than we ever thought. It's become obvious that the GOP is unable to be trusted with anything. The Republican Party needs to be Repealed and Replaced.

Those who parse the definition of rape are disgusting -- Whether it's with a gun to the head, or being drugged, or a minor subjected to incest... What is being missed all the more is the QUACKERY. Akins and many others in the Teapublican Party actually believe that when a woman is traumatized (i.e., due to violent force) that the women can't get pregnant.

That's right. When they are faced with answering questions from their constituents is when the rubber meets the road for them. Whether they like it or not, what Akin said is pretty much representative of what the Republican party is today. That is evidenced by the bills and laws they have put in place in their own representative states. I think the moderate Republicans got overwhelmed by tea party folks flooding their party and now I think many of them are having "buyer's remorse" when it comes to so many of the nut bags they helped get elected.

Very frightening that people like, akin, rayan, bachmann, issa, west, king etal, have such rabid adherents and these people actually have some power to achieve their goals. Akin is on a mission and if he gets elected he will have even more power. Every woman in the US should be very frightened for themselves, their daughters, nieces, goddaughter, as well as fathers, boyfriends, or any person who cares. There really is a War on Women, wake up republican women, vote for the President and guarantee your own health decisions, vote for romney/ryan and I guarantee you will not any control over your own health decisions, the state will own your uterus.

I don't know what the big deal is about the Akin comment. We Liberals have always been aware of the T.P.Rep.'s determination to gut the Medical Reform Act and any other advance in the reforms for the American worker's.They have stated their intentions many times. They are committed to advancing the wealth of their masters, the 1%ers, I know that their lackeys insist that it is 1.--07 ,or some such number, but it is still a very small minority . We , the Voters, should also realise that the increase in the Super Rich's wealth comes at our decrease in benefits and Welfare programs. We didn't create this economic collapse, they did,but as usual, we are going to pay the major price for their obscene greed, which they are attempting to brain-wash us into accepting as our fault.

At least Akin comes out and says it on camera. The rest of the TP arm of the GOP believe that kind of 17th century nonsense, they just know that if they SAY they believe it before election day, they would have less than no chance of winning any election. Because, whether they choose to accept it or not, most Americans have rational brains and they choose to use them instead of blindly following the right-wing agenda that would bring back archaic and hateful prejudices towards any person not white, male or a fertilized egg in the womb.

Go ahead and vote for the Republican ticket if u choose to....and watch them take us back...back....to when women were second class citizens, to when blacks were made to sit in the back of the bus. There is a reason why they call the left-wing "progressives"...it is considered progress to achieve human rights and equality for all. Progress to look out and care for those of us who are less fortunate than people like Romney, who was lucky to have been born into an affluent family and didn't have to work doubly hard to become a billionaire.

At least Akin made clear his thoughts and feelings about women. Now, if we can just have one of those "hot mic" moments with Romney, or especially Ryan, when their true contempt for Americans pops out and instantly goes viral! Oh what fun that would be, watching their spin doctors trying to stamp out that firestorm! Watch how fast the Republicans try to distance themselves from whomever it is who lets their true beliefs be made public.

Red Sox Rules gets one thing you don't. The ACA will operate a little like medicare in that what treatments you can get they have whittled down to the least expensive.

On one of Obama's more truthful moments in 2008, he actually admitted that the government would be going to at some point "suggest" to doctors that on certain aged people that it might be better to just give them a pill for the pain.

                  DB Akron,

Even if what you say is true, don't you think that it would be better to work together and "fix" this legislation instead of just trying to repeal the whole thing? There are some very good parts to this program along with a few bad. Just fix it. Don't waste the time and try to repeal it 33 times. Work with your fellow Congressman and Senator's. Get it fixed and do the job they were elected to do!

I am getting very tired of everything being blamed on the President when Congress is the main stumbling block. There is no way one guy is the cause of what is tearing this country down! But, it certainly could be better if both parties started to do the work they were sent down there to do.

DB Akron (at post #2.15) - that's simply not true. You are obliquely referring to the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB).

The IPAB is a group of 15 medical experts nominated by the President and confirmed by Congress tasked to recommend ways to Congress for Medicare to provide better services at lower costs. They have no power to make changes, only to recommend them to Congress who makes the decision to follow them or not. Should Congress reject the recommendations AND not enact alternatives, then the Secretary of Health and Human Services may enact them (may as in "not required").

The IPAB is specifically prohibited by law from recommending any policies that ration care, raise taxes, increase premiums or cost-sharing, restrict benefits or modify who is eligible for Medicare.

Your "pill" comment is directly akin to the "death panels" idiocies uttered by Ms. Palin that were roundly and soundly debunked several times. The simple fact is that under PPACA the elderly and terminally ill can have voluntary access to end of life counseling if they should so choose it.

It's their duty as voters and American's. Who in their right mind would vote for any republican anywhere?? It's none of your fu*king business what a women chooses to do with HER unwanted pregnancy. First of all, they want to ban birth-control and then they turn around and want to ban abortion. This is what happens if you're not allowed to use birth control. I mean the whole concept makes no sense. Is this what you want in this country?? It's their version of the way things should be. They are the Christian Taliban and they want to control how you live, yeah the same people that want their country back as long as you live in it their way. F'U tea-republicans, it's not your country to run the way you want. We live in a Democracy, run by "We The People" and we will never live under your thumb or rule!! AG99, because of the liability to insurance companies that comes with insuring seniors, I would hardly think any private insurance companies could possibly make any money on seniors. That is why most seniors could not get insurance through private companies before Medicare was begun and why Medicare was started. Also, private companies have more expenses than Medicare with advertising, needing to make profits for investors, higher corporate-head salaries, etc. I would imagine with Ryan's second plan that offers Medicare, that Medicare may be the cheapest plan offered, because either private companies will raise their rates very high to still make their profit after the high cost of seniors' healthcare to them, or, worse yet, they will pass seniors' high expenses on to the younger people they insure. Ryan's healthcare plans are either disastrous to hardworking citizens who have paid in all their lives (as with his first bill/plan) or just make no sense (as with his second bill/plan).

Actually, Obama's is the only plan that does something to cut the cost of Medicare and does it immediately as needed by cutting $400-$600 billion in 10 years to healthcare providers while not adding any expense to seniors. This is also the only incentive to help curb healthcare inflation by this reduction in Medicare payments and by mandating insurance for most, thus reducing inflation in healthcare due to the costs of the unpaid bills of the huge percentage of uninsured.

I know of some people who are genuinely worried that Romney/Ryan may repeal all of ACA except the mandate, because the Obama mandate is modeled after Romney's mandate in Massachusetts.

The funny part is, when he loses, he will blame the "Liberalist" media for his loss, and be

reaffirmed that god is allowing him to live in a world that is wicked in order to test his soul for

                  the afterlife.

Of course, his loss in Missouri in November will have nothing to do with his six year old mentality that the body can tell the difference between a rape pregnancy and one born out of passion or love or too much alcohol.

My question is, if the body can tell the difference between a rape-pregnancy and one affirmed by Jesus in the invisible realm through His Approval of appropriate Carnal Christian Copuli, why wouldn't the body have similar mechanisms for pregnancy to terminate them when the condom breaks, or the the guy mis-times his pullout because that little pink slice of heaven feels too good?

Seems to me, if the body were that smart, or trainable, we could end a lot of custody battles in the courts. Let try to train the body to do that. No more condoms, no more pullouts, no more booze. Lets just all train the body to recognize unwanted pregnancies. If it doesn't work, make this idiot financially responsible for their upbringing and care.

Then you'd practically see a Republican throwing condoms at teenage girls as the walk out of gym class.

And let's not forget that Republican VP candidate Paul Rand is right there in the thick of it and agrees with everything that Akin stands for and even co-authored a bill with Akin to ban ALL abortions. So, let's see, the Republicans want to ban all abortions, they want to ban most forms of birth control, they want to end planned parenthood, they want to get rid of programs that feed poor children. I am sure that I have left out many wonderful things that Republicans want to do to women and children but I think you all get the idea. So, if they want to ban abortion and they want to ban birth control, then who in the hell is going to take care of all the unwanted children, especially those that are a result of a rape? Are all of the good Republicans going to stand up and take each and every child into their care? You guys do realize that it will cut into your finances to have to feed an clothe another child as well as maybe having to spend alot of money seeking out mental health counseling for the child of a rapist because who knows what kind of mental issues the kid might have being the child of a brutal rapist. The kid could be mentally defective. Do you really want that mix in your family of "perfect" children? What will your neighbors think?

Their reaction and their stance, and Akin's for that matter, says to me that they could give a rat's ass about anything other than their own political agenda. They truly see nothing wrong with what Akin believes to be the truth, which is that women possess magical secretions to ward off the pregnancy as a result of a legitimate rape. If the woman becomes pregnant after being raped then she must have enjoyed it and therefore she was not legitimately raped. This is what many Republicans are advocating when they stand behind such a person. I won't call him a man because that would be disrespectful to the many wonderful men in this country who know better.

A few years ago a democratic no one managed to get the sealed divorce records of his opponent opened up for public view a few month before the election. The opponent was so embarassed he dropped out of the race. The democrat won. That democrat now holds the highest office in the land. My advice to you Todd is keep on keeping on, and in the future try and keep your mouth shut on hot button issues such abortion. Heck your a politician If anyone should know how to say a whole lot of nothing when asked a question is should be you.

This is how Barry got elected to office in the state of Illinios. Then it was back to the campaign trail.

Before that he was nothing more than a community activitist.

F 454, all great points, in one corner we have a community organiser, a man of the people.

In the other corner, we have a ultra wealthy guy whom only cares about the reset of his ultra wealthy friends.

Looks like an easy decision to me :)

f, divorce proceedings are a matter of public record here in Florida as well as Louisiana, couldn't tell about other states, but I think what ever your try to push I'm not feeling the love for it or you.

My gosh, MSDNC, give it a rest. Biden chain comments-barely a mention, Obama "you didn't built that"-barely a mention, the Gay Liberal activist shooting up the FRC in D.C. last week-barely a mention, the Obama PAC accusing Romney of killing a steel workers wife-barely a mention but a Republican in Missouri making a dumb comment about rape and abortion-at least 20 articles on MSDNC in less than 2 days.

I guess you guys still argue that Fox News is "right wing" and MSDNC is "main stream"? Yeah, right! Hugo Chavez would be proud of your network.

Akin's comment was dumber than anything Biden has ever said, and "You didn't build that" was nothing but Republican propaganda of a sound bite taken out of context.

Akin meant it. It wasn't a gaffe, and it wasn't taken out of context.

They always use the taken out of context. Anyone that excuses or justifies or enables that kind of truthfulness from this man is no better than he is.
I just want to say "Thank you" to all the men that have posted comments, who know better, and are on the right side of humanity! Your women are lucky to have you!

The GOP-Teanuts are upset because Adkin expressed aloud what the radical right really feels in their hearts-it was suppose to be secret until after the election----what hypocrites ! A vote for Adkins, and the GOP extremists is a vote for a return to the Dark Ages , right-wing insanity, and the loss of Democracy as we know it. This Texas Independent will hold his nose and for the first time vote for Obama....Better we go over the cliff than return to the Middle Ages, and the top 5% ruling over the rest of us peasants !

accept their counsel and exit the Senate race.” Mitt Romney

So now Romney wants him to quit.

But one of Romney's supporters from 2007 is Akin's doctor buddy Dr. Jack C. Willke. Doc Jack is the one who promotes the idea that women don’t get pregnant from rape.

“Dr. Willke is a leading voice within the pro-life community and will be an important surrogate for Governor Romney's pro-life and pro-family agenda,”Romney Campaign October, 2007

Romney has his own agenda for wanting him to quit. Truth be told, he has probably known all along what kind of crazy this man is, but now that the rest of the country knows, he wants him "Gone, baby, Gone". He has to keep distancing himself and Paul Rand from this guy since Akin and Paul Rand are very well entwined, and all three of them are on the same page where women's health and rights are concerned. Romney is just grandstanding so as to seem "presidential". Good luck with that, Mittens. Oh, and We are still waiting on those income tax returns! We aren't forgetting about that!

I think that the independence of thought in the political arena is admirable - But one also has to draw the line between myths and "I want it to be like this," from truth, often a double-edged sword!

Problem here is that, politic positions/rhetoric tends to blind politicians about absolute truths - Akin and his supporters don't get it! He should have never voiced what he said publicly - Such beliefs must remain at the country club, or in Vegas! He puts the spotlight on Republican ideology, and that's why he's being asked to step aside - The Republicans are bent on controlling the entire government, and Akin is now a liability towards that end!

Representative Bat-Brain Bachmann: The Intelligience Committee

These people were picked by fellow Replicans for their Committee Seats. Gives a citizen some idea of the Replicans in general.

Representative SFB Akins and SFB Ryan present a bill allowing for abortion only in the case of FORCIBLE Rape (as though there was another kind)
