Deadline passed, Akin says he's staying in Missouri Senate race

Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, who launched a firestorm of controversy after his use of the phrase "legitimate rape" and then ignited further criticism with his comments Tuesday, has said he's going to stay in the race. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Updated 6:12 p.m. - Rep. Todd Akin (R) did not step aside as the Republican Senate nominee in Missouri, allowing a key preliminary deadline to end his candidacy to come and go.

Akin, who's faced growing clamor from fellow Republicans to end his candidacy amid an uproar over his weekend comments about rape, said he believes it is important for him to press forward with his campaign against incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

"I want to make one thing absolutely clear: we are going to continue with this race," Akin said on the radio show of Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and Senate candidate.

Congressman Todd Akin may not drop his Senate bid today, but NBC's Domenico Montanaro reports his real deadline is likely Sept. 25, the date that he would be locked into the ballot. Today is the last day he can drop out of the Missouri Senate race without having to pay ballot costs.

"I've had a chance now to run through a primary. And the party people said that when you run through a primary, we'll be with you."

Akin had until 5 p.m. CST today to resign his Senate nomination without facing any procedural difficulties. He could still withdraw by Sept. 25, though he would have to petition a court to remove his name from the ballot, and have to pay costs associated with reprinting the ballots.

National Republicans have undertaken efforts to force the six-term congressman from the race. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has canceled its advertising reservations, and a pro-Republican super PAC has said it no longer plans to invest in the campaign, either. Top Republican senators have also canceled a planned fundraiser for Akin on Sept. 19.

Akin said he'd seen an influx of small-dollar donations since the initial uproar emerged on Sunday, and he said he'd received supportive calls from other colleagues in Congress, though he did not say who.

More significantly, national Republicans have begun openly agitating for Akin's ouster. Missouri's past five Republican senators released a joint statement today saying "the right decision is to step aside."

Orlin Wagner / AP

Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., talks with reporters while attending the Governor's Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, Mo.

Akin's controversy stems from comments he made last weekend on "The Jaco Report" on KTVI FOX 2 News, on which he said "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy in victims. Akin has since apologized, and said he was mistaken to assert that rape culdn't result in pregnancy. He released a television ad to that effect this morning.

Republicans had high hopes of beating McCaskill before Akin made his comments over the weekend. But the congressman's persistence in the race could jeopardize the GOP's chances in this key race, which provides one of their best opportunities to achieve the net gain of four seats Republicans need this fall to take control of the Senate in the next Congress.

Of course he will. Politicians have no shame anymore.

But the congressman's persistence in the race could jeopardize the GOP's chances in this key race

'Could'? I think 'will' is the more accurate term here. Irreparable damage has been done to his campaign.

Hot Damn! This will bode well for the Repubes. Just when you thought the Repubes were trying to distance themselves from the RWNJ's, They just couldn't resist.

Oh, but then again they're all RWNJ's anyway. I guess they can't help it...!!LOL!!

One of the big difference between the Republicans and the Democrats is when one of their own sticks their foot in the mouth.

Democrats circle the wagons attack the Indians. Republicans circle the wagons, the blooper and join the Indians in firing on him tied to a stake in the center of the wagons.

Staying in. Why not?

He is now the poster boy for what the new republican party has become.

The GNOP mantra:

Women don't need contraception in any form

Abortion should be banned

Guns for all

End Medicare

End Medicaid

Up the retirement age

End Social Security

Remove restrictions on business to allow them to do what they want

Remove restrictions from Wall Street

Stop immigration

Raise taxes on people earning less than $50,000 through less deductions

Lower taxes for those earning more than $100,000 through more tax deductions

Cut government jobs

Increase the budget for the military

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unless you are a Caucasian male, wealthy, retired or a politician, there would be no reason to vote for any republican.

I for one think that extremist on both sides take political comments to use as weapons, which in some cases like this, show a politicians ignorance. Comments are just sometimes goofs, for instance when Romnet introduced Ryan, he said "would like to present to you the next PRESIDENT of the United States", which of course was silly, Ryan would be VP, not president, if America is too hung over,to think straight on election day.

That said, both sides sure get a kick out of using blunders and just plain stupid statements. It just reminds me why people watch shows like Keeping up with the Kardashians... there can be no good reason to watch that crap on TV, but I bet there are some who record every episode!

Obama/Biden - the future depends on us getting out to the Polls!!!!

If he decides to keep on running, what is the party going to do? Run ads in support of his opponent? He's got them by the short hairs.

Of course, his problem (and the Republican party's problem) is that a lot of support that has been pouring in is Democratic in nature, who REALLY want to have him run. He has always been their favorite. This is what they were hoping for, and he has not disappointed.

I'm a political independent, who is currently considering voting for Romney/Ryan in 2012 this November, because I am so extraordinarily disappointed in the conduct and actions of the Obama Administration I voted for in 2008.

With that said, Akin's comments are disgusting and disgraceful. He has no business at all being near any seat of power. This man should resign from the race, both for the sake of his party, and the sake of the people of MO and the rest of the nation.

I guess it remains to be seen if his arrogance is too great to allow that to happen.

How is it that he even has a choice about withdrawing? If a Dem does anything the GOP screams until he resigns or they file ethics charges against him. Yet Republicans are allowed to tell rape victims that they weren't really raped if they get pregnant, call highly respectable women "SLUTS", pick up boys in men's bathrooms, and have sex with congressional pages and the GOP is all but silent, giving nothing more than lip service. Disgraceful! Then there's the little matter of trying to push our government into default last summer rather than give up their Bush Tax Cut For The Wealthy, and Romney's claim to having paid 13% income tax on the millions of dollars he made shipping American jobs overseas. To be a Republican is to be Anti-American. Any woman who votes Republican should be tarred and feathered by her sisters, and every Republican needs to be voted out of office both nationally and locally. They are Un-American. They are traitors to the American people. Their only loyalties are to their own greed and the multi-national corporations that fill their pocket and try to rig their elections. Why is it that such a large number are not able to see what some of these so called conservative politicians are doing to suppress their opportunities to improve their lot in life? The have now accepted the words "welfare" and "health care" as dirty words not recognizing that their leaders are using those words to hide their utter contempt for those who are not of equal "status" and hopefully keep them down. Sure it is easy for Romney and Ryan to talk about vouchers, etc. Why do they care? No, they do not let the "riff-raff" in as they will dilute that wealth they so love to grab for themselves only. They make sure that they do not get a good education, so they can easily suppress those who cannot read or write. I wonder how how many of those poor ignorant fools have even read Ayn Rand, let alone heard of her.

Paul Ryan & Akin cosponsored the abortion bill that would ban federal funding for abortion—from all cases of rape to cases of "forcible rape," which is parallel to GOP Anti-Abortion Language in the Party Platform. In fact, Ryan requires women to have Transvaginal Ultrasound before an abortion. This is not news, this attitude has been within the GOP party vs. abortion. We just happen to hear it said out loud from Mr. Akin. "The difference between Ryan’s views and Akin’s could fit on a Post-it note. " {Bloomberg}

Top 10 about Paul Ryan:

1. Ryan & Akin cosponsored a bill that would have narrowed the already-narrow exceptions to the laws banning federal funding for abortion—from all cases of rape to cases of "forcible rape." Ryan also requires women to have transvaginal ultrasound before an abortion.

2. Ryan embraces the extreme philosophy of Ayn Rand. Rand described altruism as “evil,” condemned Christianity for advocating compassion for the poor, viewed the feminist movement as “phony.”

3. Ryan wants to raises taxes on the working poor and middle class, and give tax cut for millionaires & billionaires, which would create 10 trillion dollars in federal deficit.

4. Economic Institute Policy indicates that Ryan’s budget, austerity measure would result in 4.1 million lost jobs in 2 years. Paul Ryan’s budget doesn’t just fail to address job creation, it aggressively slows job growth. Using a standard macroeconomic model that is consistent with that used by private- and public-sector forecasters, the shock to aggregate demand from near-term spending cuts would result in roughly 1.3 million jobs lost in 2013 and 2.8 million jobs lost in 2014, or 4.1 million jobs through 2014.*

5. Ryan wants to end Medicare, replace it with a voucher system by asking senior and disable to pay $6,400 dollars out of pockets, and get less medical services.

5. Ryan would cut 14-19 millions children out of Medicaid.

7. Ryan wants to Privatize social security and put it into risky stocks

8. Ryan wants to eliminate $170 billion dollars funding for Pell Grants that affects 1 million students, while he supports $40 billion dollars in subsides for big oil companies.

9. Ryan has ownership stakes in companies that benefit from oil subsidies.

10. He would eliminate capital gain tax, and Romney would pay zero to 1 % tax rate, while working poor & middle class would pay 30-40 % tax rate.

For decades it has been accepted that Roe v Wade with the Hyde Amendment is the undisputed law of the land. Even Romney once said he would not try to change this legal precedence, and most Americans including the religious-Right saw exceptions in the case of rape/incest or putting the life of the mother at risk.

Then I started hearing more and more social conservatives saying there can be no exceptions. I thought maybe they were trying to be *pure* in their belief that abortion is murder. But now we learn it is because of a history of QUACKERY. There has been a conspiracy theory/urban legend/old wives tale or whatever you want to call it pseudo-science that women who are traumatized by "forced" rape are physically incapable of getting pregnant. This is on par with girls using peanut butter for contraception, except these are adults—adults in positions of power who believe and repeat this BS!

Who knows how many Republicans currently in office, or running for office, embrace this QUACKERY, but we as a society, as a nation, must put an end to such damaging ignorance--especially root it out of the mainstream and government leadership positions. It's bad enough to try to use such BS to attack women’s rights, but it is beyond words if a person actually believes such BS.

When the true weight of this craziness struck the core of my soul, I found it so profoundly disturbing -- It is difficult to wrap my head around it.

Batcrap Bachmann advocated that the news media should do a "penetrating expose" to determine how many members of Congress were "anti-American." Well the media and American voters need to do an investigation to ferret out any person holding office or running for office who believes a woman can't become pregnant if "legitimately" raped. This is so beyond the pale of acceptable behavior, it can't be left to stand in any part of this country.

The National Right to Life Committee awarded Paul Ryan a 100% rating. Both Romney and Paul Ryan have supported “personhood" legislation, with Ryan advocating NO exceptions. Romney has advocated over-turning Roe v Wade and leaving the matter to the states -- We are talking civil rights, which are a Federal Government matter!

The first thing that needs to be done is to send all Republicans packing in this election. The second thing that needs to be done is to replace the Republicans and any male with a Democrat female where ever possible. Enough of men like Akin trying to dictate what women's right should be. If they want an amendment it should be that MEN no longer have any say in what women can or cannot do--especially misogynists like Todd Akin and all the other jagoffs in the Republican Party from Paul Ryan and Romney right down the line.

HOME SALES TAX - BEGINS 2013

When does your home become part of your health care? After 2012!

HOME SALES TAX I thought you might find this interesting. The National Association of Realtors is all over this and working to get it repealed, -- before it takes effect. But, I am very pleased we aren't the only ones who know about this ploy to steal billions from unsuspecting homeowners. How many realtors do you think will vote Democratic in 2012? Did you know that if you sell your house after 2012 you will pay a 3.8% sales tax on it? That's $3,800 on a $100,000 home, etc. When did this happen? It's in the health care bill, -- and it goes into effect in 2013. Why 2013? Could it be so that it doesn't come to light until after the 2012 elections? So, this is 'Obama change you can believe in'? Under the new health care bill all real estate transactions will be subject to a 3.8% sales tax. If you sell a $400,000 home, there will be a $15,200 tax. This bill is set to screw the retiring generation, -- who often downsize their homes. Does this make your November, 2012 vote more important? Oh, you weren't aware that this was in the ObamaCare bill? Guess what; you aren't alone! There are more than a few members of Congress that weren't aware of it either. You can check this out for yourself at:http://www.gop.gov/blog/10/04/08/obamacare-flatlines-obamacare-taxes-home

Akin's comments were "profoundly disturbing" mostly to folks who were not going to vote for him anyhow.

If he continues to lead in the Mossourt polls, are the Republican kingmakers still gonna withdraw their support. A Republican Senator is still a Republican Senator.

This guy may end up being the Republican's Blagojevich.

Akin is right to stay in the race. His only mistake was saying out-loud what the majority of Republicans believe. Akin is representative of the Republican platform at the convention. It is just an inconvenience for the GOP/TP that Americans are learning the truth about it. Akin shouldn't have to step down anymore than Romney and Ryan or anyone else in the Teapublican Taliban. The voters need to throw them all out.

clwyd-2621393 -- Agreed. What is a "Grooming Rape," or a rape with a gun to the head or knife to the throat, or drugging the victim, or incest, etc.? The president was correct to say that "rape is rape" and trying to parse what it is, to try to redefine what rape is -- this is a low as folks can go.

      Hey Joal,

I think the argument would be that with ever greater levels of government, either as a percentage of GDP or in actual dollars spent, we've not yet reached the nirvana your side of the political spectrum continues to predict. In other words, larger government doesn't result in greater opportunities in life. Some government is necessary, like military, courts, printing money, and the like, in order to create for you the kind of opportunities you can then make use of to better your life. But the idea that the government itself can better your life is something of a legend. As in myth.

Akin is really telling women...... F-U and I will make rape legal.

Any woman votes for this tool will be a disgrace to the progress woman have made over the last 50 years.

Saying the rightwing wants to return to the Dark Ages is not hyperbole:

During the campaign, [Clayton] Williams publicly made a joke likening rape to bad weather, having quipped: "If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it".

        Williams was quoting Napoleon.

Let's hope young voters get out again to reelect the president -- Especially young women, who may need to be reminded how much women in the generations before them have fought for the rights they have now -- Rights that Teapublicans are trying to take away again.

All civil rights, whether women's rights, black's rights, labor rights, and voter rights -- Fight for your rights!

Since many Republicans don't believe in evolution or that global climate change is real, it should come as no surprise that they believe this garbage as well. The problem in each instance is dogmatically clinging to the party line despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary

I have spent a long time thinking what the best outcome could be. Obama is a phony. Remember back when the Republicans blackmailed the congress and president and refused to raise the debt limit unless Obama signed a bill full of cuts to programs both important to the democrats (for poor people, etc.) or republicans (the military)? Any decent president with a backbone would have refused to sign such and forced them to back off in the game of chicken. But No, Obama signed it; and this bomb will detonate at the end of the year. Nasty cuts are already in the works! That is enough reason to not want Obama; but it does not end there. His beloved health care plan will simply water down already existing Medicare. Romney has pointed this out, and I see no credible denials of the fact.

Now before anyone gets the idea I am some sort of republican Obama-hater, I would point out the problems with Romney. His choice of Ryan shows that he is overly obsessed with debts and deficits. This obsession usually indicates one who can't wait to cut programs as deficits are more important than people. This makes him dangerous.

Problem...what to do as a voter? I considered voting third party. When it comes to cuts on the old and poor, Obama is an equal threat to Romney. There are no good choices. But what about a tactical vote? It takes congress to pass budgetary things; therefore, the composition of the congress is somewhat more important than the president. Romney can't do all that cutting without congress putting the bills on the table. It is best to have a democratic majority in both houses. This dingbat Akin is perfect. Let him nuke himself and his party. Let him run and lose. Hooray.

Note: a democratic congress would insure there are no bills put on the president's desk that attack abortion rights, etc.

On the other hand, to trust Obama is dangerous. He is a cutter too as much as many Republicans, just sneakier about it. And worse yet, he is a disaster to national security. He leaks secrets and stabs our military and spies in the back (If you don't believe it, go to OPSECTeam.org and watch a video about how he betrayed us.) Obama has also betrayed many traditional democratic positions like environmentalism (He is pro-fracking). Romney would likely be better for national security, which is where a president is most influential. He may make a better president.

Tactically, we may be better off with a Democratic congress and a Republican president. I am considering that as a possible voting strategy.

Todd Akin is a perfect example of right wing ignorance rearing its ugly head again! I know I’m not the only one fed up with all the right wing clowns that have crawled out of the sewer over the last thirty years. I only hope that our numbers grow exponentially to the point where we can finally rid ourselves of the political disease known as the Republican/Tea Party.

I have visited many news vines and blogs over the years and have witnessed a never ending right wing attack on female reproductive rights. These people talk as if abortion is illegal…IT IS NOT ILLEGAL. We should all hope that it never becomes illegal again, that would be a giant step backwards for personal freedom.

This whole abortion “debate” is not a debate at all; it is just a small vocal and occasionally homicidal minority of zealots trying everything they can to impose their beliefs onto the majority that disagrees with them. It’s disgusting how a dying political party has exploited their fanaticism to glean votes in order to bolster its ever decreasing share of the American electorate.

The American people must guard against forces like the so called “right to life” movement. Minority groups like this use lofty titles to artificially elevate themselves above the silent majority of Americans for the sole purpose of limiting the personal freedoms of the entire population. Why do they do this? That’s simple, for political power and influence. Of course this power inevitably leads to vast financial gain. Anyone that doubts this and still believes the motives of these groups are morally pure should consider one very important fact. That fact is; without exception these special interest minority groups are always introduced onto the public stage by white Republican men……… Think about that for a while and you will begin to understand the twisted purpose of it all…

Have you noticed that the congress is already Republican?

        Your choices are:

[a] A republican congress and a republican president.

[b] A republican congress and a democratic president.

Obama might not have held to the cues of the far left but that's because he's slightly right-of-center. The reason why people call him liberal is because the Right has receded to the looney side.

A right-leaning President (Obama) is much better than a loon (Romney.)

Just a couple of points. First I hope Akin has the chutzpah to stay in this race till the end and thus reveal the GOP as having any honor or not by continuing to refuse to support him till Nov. Second, and more scary, if the GOP should take control of Congress and the Presidency in Nov this is the kind of thinking we can expect regarding the health care debate and crime. That certain types of rape are legitimate (? must the person being raped say no a certain number of times or is this for date rape when "she led you on") and magical faeries can stop you from becoming pregnant if you were "really" raped. Yes I will now be proudly voting against this honorable man in Nov. (he didn't run like a kicked dog with his tail between his legs when his true colors were revealed).

Nothing would make me happier than to see this moron continue his campaign all the way into November. Caught a clip of him on the nightly news; apparently, he came up with a definition for "illegitimate rape": where a woman cries rape after finding out she is pregnant so she can get an abortion. It just keeps getting better every time this clown opens his mouth. And to think, Paul Ryan co-authored an abortion bill with him. I see it this way: keep Tea Bag crackpots on the ballot, or engage in mischief voting to ensure they run up against Democrats in November, then enjoy the show as they self-destruct. Anything that furthers the destruction of the Republican party is a good thing for America.

Akin deserves a very special Gatorade victory bath. Start with a Gatorade bucket. Fill it with tea, leave room for a bag of ice. Urinate in it for a week and a half. Add the ice, wait until it partially melts. Pour over Akin's head. Capture the priceless facial expressions on camera.

Side note: does anyone have a pool going as to when the Republicans may have this guy assassinated? Right now, that's probably their best shot at salvaging November.

Wake up women of the USA,

It doesn't matter whether you are pro-life or pro choice, but when when a stupid, silly old geezer running for senator says on national tv that a woman can just shut off her reproductive system when she has a penis in her vagina against her will and can then avoid becoming pregnant....and at the same time suggest that if she does become pregnant, that the original act was consensual, does anybody step back and say enough is enough. Do pro life people really believe that a woman can shut off her reproductive system?????? If they do, they are stupidest people on God's earth. The bigger picture is this....if this guy can go on national tv and say this bull@!$%# that is so obviously wrong, can you imagine what else he's lied about and will lie about to the electorate? If he can get away with such blatant lies, there is no limit to what else he can lie about...and get away with.

Here's a question to consider...the National Organization for Marriage advocates (paraphrasing)"one man, one woman to bring together the two halves of humanity, man and woman to raise their biological child within the sanctity of marriage." If women can be forced to carry their rapists child, how long before she is forced to marry her rapist?????

Here is what I find interesting about some of the trolls who post repeatedly on this site and pass themselves as the voice of rationale people. In any given day you will see about 800-1000 people post on a blog. For the most part it is pro-Obama and many of the comments, on both sides, are just plain ignorant. That people like him gain any kind of authority and/or public attention is stunning!

What he's really saying is, sometimes, women want to be raped. When she wants it, it's illegitimate rape, and of course she could become pregnant.

So, what is the determining factor, I wonder? Does she have to be beaten? Tortured? Unconscious? Dead? Ohhhh....I get his drift. What a pig.

Republicans in Tampa, Fla., are drafting a platform provision that calls for a "human life amendment" to the Constitution: a ban on abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Who in their right mind would vote for any republican anywhere?? It's none of your fu*king business what a women chooses to do with HER unwanted pregnancy. First of all, they want to ban birth-control and then they turn around and want to ban abortion. This is what happens if you're not allowed to use birth control. I mean the whole concept makes no sense. Is this what you want in this country?? It's their version of the way things should be. They are the Christian Taliban and they want to control how you live, yeah the same people that want their country back as long as you live in it their way. Chicago (Mr. Obama) politics carried into the 2012 election.

                1. Attack character. Rather than fight out their differences in policy, Mr Axelrod told Obama that the
only way to secure a defeat was to attack Mrs Clinton's character.
The goal was to paint Obama as the "authentic 'remedy' to what ails Washington and stands in the way of progress" and to discredit his main rival in the process.

                2. Demand Tax Returns. Axelrod Playbook 2008 Flashback: 'Obama Demands Hillary Clinton Release Tax Returns'.....

                3. Use "Racist" (now using "Felon"). ".....they (Obama campaign) successfully silenced Bill Clinton and crippled Hillary Clinton's campaign by suggesting that the president, of all people, was a "racist". President Clinton was left deeply hurt by the accusation, but the mud stuck.

                4. Deflect the issues. Attacking McCain falsely saying that he supports big oil, he was responsible for DHL job losses in Ohio, he supports Yucca Mountain in Nevada, he is for TAX BREAKS FOR MILLIONAIRES, and saying McCain's attacks (which did not happen) on Obama were not true.

Yep, same political agenda and Liberals eat it up, especially deflecting from the major issues facing our country (i.e., deflections: immigration, women's rights, class warfare....etc.).

                One and GONE.

Romney-Ryan 2012 to take back America from the radicals.

Let me get this straight. Akin is nuts because he actually gives a reason (a 1988 PA legislator's faulty claim) why raped women should not have access to abortion to end their pregnancy, but the Republicans who condemn him support legislation that would force a raped woman to carry the rapist's forced pregnancy through a 9 month full term pregnancy against her will.

So, Akin and Republicans who condemn his reasoning AGREE that rape victims, after being forced to have sex (a crime), will also be forced to bear the child of their rapist (9 months of sheer hell for some, I'm sure).

Shame on you, Rep. Akin. Shame on you, Paul Ryan. Shame on you, GOP Platform Committee which made this abortion ban part of their platform today. Let freedom ring ....unless you are raped.

                  From NPR:

Tampa, Fla., a week ahead of their national convention, Republicans are drawing up their party platform. There are muted disagreements over a few issues, such as immigration and same-sex marriage. But at least within the platform committee, one of the least controversial issues discussed this week is abortion.

With little discussion, the committee on Tuesday adopted the same anti-abortion language it included in GOP platforms in 2004 and 2008. It seeks passage of a constitutional amendment that would extend legal rights to the unborn, essentially banning abortion.

The language in the platform includes no exceptions for rape or incest.

Rev. Al Sharpton, Thank You and the MSNBC team for reporting political/ news events. I WOULD LIKE TO SALUTE THE TROOPS, VETERANS and THEIR FAMILIES. Thanks for your sacrifices. In my opinion, mea culpa has no credible realistic weight with Yoder and Akin. Rep. Kevin Yoder and Rep. Todd Akin should "Hit The Road Jack," get expulsion and lose their government paychecks and benefits. Romney/ Ryan has been running SUPER PAC ads of false hoods against President Obama about the Welfare Reform Program. From my viewpoint, Yoder and Akin will be an "Economic Drain" on government funds. I believe, this is a form of ethical misconduct, fraud, waste and abuse because they are receiving "Free Welfare" for bad behavior in reward of Congressional finances, benefits, and perks. In my opinion, this craziness and "Ill Repute" nonsense is how they represent their states and the American people!! They should bow their heads low in horrible disgrace and shame. I will pray for them. Confucius the Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher said, "TO SEE WHAT IS RIGHT AND NOT DO IT, IS WANT OF COURAGE." There are allegedly 23 million people out of jobs which is not President Obama's fault. The American people helped to "Bail Out" businesses/ corporations, and other establishments but some of them are deciding not to utilize the stimulus funds they received to hire people and help boost the economy. From my viewpoint, Rep. Kevin Yoder shouldn't receive a "Free Pass" or "Golden Ticket" to continue voting on critical policies as a U.S. Congressman after his alleged criminal, obscene public indecency and "sexual (FLASHER) misconduct" with disgraceful social behavior to skinny dip in the Sea of Galilee. He should have lost his security clearance/ been investigated along with the other Congressmen and whoever else was witness to their gross misconduct just like the EX-Secret Service Agents. Is there a Double Standard for these Congressmen?!! Allegedly, according to News Reports/ Social media this is not the first time that Yoder has been socially deviant when there was alcohol involved. Although Romney/ X-TREME Ryan, Grover Norquist, the pledged Republican/ Tea Party conservatives were not disrespectful, ignorant, and heartless about women, rape, and abortion like Akin, that doesn't mean they totally disagree with all his viewpoints. Remember, Romney/ Ryan are well known to "FLIP FLOP" according to the political climate, circumstances, and situation. Mahatma Gandhi said, "In my humble opinion, non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as is cooperation with good." In viewing, The LAST WORD with LAWRENCE O'DONNELL his segment on Paul Ryan Vs. Women, IRIN CARMON (Salon.com) was very informative when she spoke about issues concerning personal autonomy and freedom when it involves women's uterus/ reproductive rights. I thought it was interesting when she discussed "THE HANDMAID'S TALE" is her opinion of Paul X-TREME Ryan's vision according to his voting record about women. October 15th will be "NO THRILLER" when Mitt Etch-A-Sketch Romney decides to release his most likely "PARTIAL TAX RETURNS." Its obvious that, 63% of the American people are not angry, jealous, divisive, obsessed, small minded, or ignorant. Most will vote their choice and with common sense, fully understanding the difference between honesty and dishonesty. STICKS AND STONES...!!! George S. Patton Jr. said, "Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash." I appreciate President Obama and Vice President Biden's enthusiasm and energetic spirits. Johann Friedrich Schiller said, "Enthusiasm is that kindling spark which marks the difference between the leaders in every activity and the laggards who put in just enough to get by." The Romney/ X-TREME Ryan budget plan for medicare, medicaid, social security, and other programs are vague at best. If anyone can verbalize the word SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS 6 X's fast, then you can understand the Romney/ Ryan budget plan. All I can comprehend from their speeches is Cut , Coupons/ Vouchers, and Trust Me with no actual proof. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT ROMNEY/ RYAN IN CONVINCING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OF YOUR VISION FOR AMERICA!!! Rev. Al Sharpton, Thank You. HAVE A WONDERFUL AND BLESSED DAY!!!

I'd still like to know -

at what point a corporation becomes a 'person'?

Is it against the Republican party plank to abort a corporation at inception?

Wouldn't that be 'legitimate' rape if a corporation was forced to full term?

And seriously - can Gay couples adopt corporations of a different sex, ethnicity - legally?

The new test for rape -

if you get pregnant then you weren't raped.

It's reminiscent of conservative nut jobs of yore

                  - if you don't float then you aren't a witch.

A tearful apology worked for Jimmy Swaggart...if nothing else, you gotta give Akin credit for sticking it out (maybe that was a poor choice of words). But even better than holding onto that senate seat, this disrespect for women will remain front and center, and the GOP will lose.

Must be those same doctors that told him that "legitimate rape" doesn't cause pregnancy. You know, the ones that told Bachmann that vaccines caused retardation (although to be fair, it did in her case).

I agree he'll loose, but it is his constituents who will be the big losers. This is just another large crack showing in the foundation of faith based politics. Personally, I believe that there are a large number of fairly old (now) voters in his constituency, who's financial power has been the money behind Akins. Now that it is apparent to most voters across the nation that Akins has little to no clue about reproductive health or biology, it speaks very poorly of the people's intelligence who elected him in the first place. It is the same mindset of the Catholic Church, ( the believers of such ( elderly ), I'm guessing make up a large percentage of Akin's support ). The denial that these faith groups are showing, is both the indication of the weakness in faith based logic, but more significantly how rapidly now faith based thinking is collapsing. Decades ago it would have taken weeks for this news to disseminate, and thus allowing time for some damage control strategy in that time. That's not the case now. Akins has not only demonstrated his personal stupidity publicly, but the stupidity of the people who put him in office in the first place. No wonder everyone's worried about jobs.

At this point Akin has no chance of winning and should step aside for the good of the party. With another candidate in is place the Republicans have a chance of picking up McCaskill's seat, with Akin in the race the Democrats are virtually guaranteed the win. By staying in the race Akin is proving that he does not care about anyone or anything other than himself. If he really cared about his constituents and the rest of the country he would step aside and give the Republicans a chance to get McCaskill out of office.

He's betting that the national party won't give up on Missouri. In a few weeks, if he's still in and still close in the polls, the national money will come back in some form. Missouri is too important to the Republicans if they want to take the Senate majority this year.

What Akin said was not only stupid. Worse, it is what he believes. To improvise an answer about female biology is not likely. He must have read or been told this "spontaneous infertility" theory by someone. Perhaps, Rep. Friend of PA who made similar claim in 1988.

This Akin is a true believer and I will wager that we just heard what many in the conservative Christian movement already believe. This was no slip of the tongue. This is what he believed.

This is not about womens rights, no one is threatening their right to an abortion. What they are saying is " we should not have to pay for it" !

The DNC is tying to convince you the Government should pay for everything.

ODUMBO borrows .40 cents on every dollar he spends, thus the FIVE TRILLION in new debt since 08.

How much longer do you really think we can continue on this utopian path.

                            You people are IDIOTS !

Edward--You clearly are not familiar with the Congressman's position. Akin has clearly stated that he doesn't believe that a woman should have access to a legal, safe abortion not only in cases of her choice, but also in cases of rape or incest. The Hyde Amendment forbids the use of Federal funds to pay for an abortion. That has been in effect for many years. Before you call people "idiots," you ought to get your facts straight.

The President doesn't have the power to borrow money. That would be Congress. I suggest you read the US Constitution.

                            Edward F.,

You obviously haven't read HR 3, co-sponsored by Akin and Paul Ryan. It most certainly IS about women's rights and it most certainly IS about eliminating their right of choice.

So who are the idiots, Edward? Those who have read HR 3 or those who haven't?

And the Romney/Ryan budget will put us in more debt in order to give big tax breaks to millionaires.

The Presidents who are responsible for the most debt wouldn't be Obama or the Democrats, try Reagan and Bush 43. You should also go back and view the movie 'Wall Street" when Michael Douglas, during his "Greed is Good" speech, stated how in debt we were back then to other nations...wasn't just a line in a movie, but it's really true!

Read: HR 3, co-sponsored by Akin and Paul Ryan

Read: The Hyde Amendment. "It forbids the use of Federal funds to pay for an abortion"

Read: Paul Ryan's votes on abortion

Read: That your sister got raped by your brother, which made her pregnant and because Romney/Ryan won they passed a law that made it illegal to have an abortion in all cases.

Now your sister must have your brother's baby. How you like those apples?

Now go out there and vote for Romney/Ryan - Also tell your mother there is nothing you can do about your sister being raped.

Ed F. How come wingers tend forget history even as recent as ten years ago . Who perpetuated two unfunded wars for the benefit of haliburton and blackwater ? Who conceived the largest unfunded entitlement program, Medicare D, for the benefit of big pharma? Sound familiar? Dubya and his henchmen cheney, rove, wolfowitz and rumsfeld. Add that to the bailouts for the "too big to fail" banks during the meltdown. That's where the cause of the deficit lies. How soon we forget!

Akin's statement is the epitome of ignorance and naivety amongst our law making governing legislators. Many of whom we will never know their true nature and thoughts on this and other issues. He was only caught putting his proverbial foot in his mouth as he spoke out regarding this nation-dividing issue. Single handedly he was able to demean women and show his true nature. For his honesty, I give him a thumbs up. For his views on rape and women, I am still in deep shock that any person in today's world living in the United States can be so ignorant and down right stupid.

Have you not seen the footage of Romney in the past saying he was against all abortions? Have you not seen the legislation that Akin and Ryan cosponsored? The best way to see what the reds are about is to look at what they have said and done to win primaries. That gives you a great view of their misogynist agenda. By the way, white, married to rich men, mindless women will vote for these people. Working class (not CEO's) women will think about what a red win will mean for women and not want any parts of it. Romney is running scared. Have you noticed he is giving inklings that he supports national healthcare? I know, he isn't saying that and will deny it but he is giving just enough support to the idea to try to get the vote of those who do favor it.

jimm--First, most women are offended by the notion of "legitimate rape." Most women I know believe that women do not lie about being raped (you and I could discuss that, given the Duke Lacrosse team episode, but that's what most women I know believe). Second, the notion that raped women cannot get pregnant is so out of touch with reality as to mark this guy as a complete idiot. Third, he noted that "some punishment" should be meted out to the rapist. In many jurisdictions, rape is still a capital offense and this guy wants "some" punishment for a rapist? I'm sure that others would be offended by the general misogynist view of his statement, but I'll let them speak to that.

Why are Democrats clamoring for Todd Akins to resign ??? Do the Democrats want Akins to resign from his House seat or get out of the Senate race against Senator Claire McCaskill ??? Todd Akins must give up his House seat to run for the Senate right ??? I haven't heard Senator McCaskill call for him to get out of the Senate race... If Akins stay in the race, its the best of both worlds and a dream come true for Senator McCaskill and the Democrat party... Democrats need to encourage Todd Akins to stay in the Senate race and thereby increase Senator McCaskill chances of winning re-election significantly...

One candidate simply wants to ensure everyone has access to quality health care and the other, denies rights and is clueless towards humanity. This within itself should be a no brainer!

If you look at Ryan and understand why he said he got into politics = due to Ayn Rand, you will understand why Ryan is against all government programs (I have heard him say this a few years ago) and why he doesn't think medicare, medicaid, soc security etc should be available to people in the United States. He has a you are on your own mentality. However, wouldn't it have been nice if his rich dad who got rich from gov roads had made him go out into the world on his own with no money like many, many of us had to do and create a good situation for ourselves. Romney and Ryan have no clue what work is, what being on your own is, or what it means to work your way up to the top. Ayn Rand was a Russian atheist who did not believe in faith or religion and that countries should not be altruistic as in don't help individuals. What will be a scream is when the socalled Christians who make up everything they can about Obama because they don't like him will in actuality be voting for a Mormon and a practicing atheist. Oh I know he says he is a catholic but in 2009 he also pledged support still for Rand. And now he says he didn't know what she stood for (for 20 plus years?) and than he only follows her economy wise. Well that is too much in itself. With him you are all on your own.Economy wise. And Romney thinks if you have no moneyyou can just get it from your parents. And the problem is he probably does not even know what is wrong with that thought or statement. He thinks we are all rich I guess. I would love to have a conversation with him and then I would know he actually met someone that wasn't born rich. I don't think he knows there are any in the US and they have safety nets. Or that is what he said. Funny I didn't have a safety net when I graduated from school. I was on my own, got a job and supported myself. I was the safety net. I couldn't even live at home when I got a job because of my parents financial situation. I didn't whine. But what makes me angry is that Romney doesn't even know that people like me exist in the US. Or people much worse off. At least I had agood job.

Apology? I'd say NO! I respect the right to speak freely and say what's on one's mind. And while something may be said that I may not AGREE with, that is what "discussion" is for. Bashing and name calling is just a way to show how immature one is. As for using the word "legitimate" in his statement, I took it's meaning in a totally different context. Being a victim, I also know that there ARE SOME women who say rape and later facts prove it to be false..so therefore in my view, the word fits the statement he made. No I can't say 100% that it's how he meant it to come across..only HE knows in what way he was thinking..But to condemn him for speaking, is just not right. We ALL have said things that have many ways to interpret..it's just that we are not running for a public office.

The fact is that Akin IS running for public office. As such, his WORDS are a large part of what the electorate uses to assess his suitability FOR that office.

                                        He has been found wanting.

Now if we can just keep him in the race....

I would bet on the latter. We are so used to republicans lying, it doesn't really stand out anymore

Grown ups who measure their thoughts in public are often considered polite and civil - and don't get drug through the mud like this Akins character.
Say what you will, but remember others have the right to do the same - and a public figure speaking their mind will be answered in a very public forum.

He said more than that. He kept blabbing and said that if you are raped your body more or less knows it so you won't get pregnant. If you do it wasn't really rape or something to that effect. This caused a lot of victims to come forth and say baloney with a capital b. We don't need people with this mindset anywhere near a legislative office.

College is a LUXURY... not a right or a given. If you cannot afford to go to college, then you don't go. Your entitlement mentality is exactly what is destroying America. You are right.... it is always someone elses fault that you don't have money to go to college. What makes you think that governmnet and or taxpayers should pay for your college? If you are too stupid to figure out a way on your own, then you are not college material anyway. That problem is your and yours alone. Americans that are unable to live within their means and a government that has promised everything is why America is broke and in decline.

@appletoad: you said "College is a LUXURY... not a right or a given."

We should be first in the world in education or at least in the top 5 imo. Yet people like you think it's a luxury. It's not. In order to compete in this "world's economy" we need to have the brightest at work to protect us. Or we outsource or lose.
Did you know the US is 14th in the world in reading for 15 year old's, 17th in science and 25th in math (USA Today). "This is an absolute wake-up call for America," U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in an interview with The Associated Press. "The results are extraordinarily challenging to us and we have to deal with the brutal truth. We have to get much more serious about investing in education."
Again, it's thinking like that that will hurt this United States, not help it.

End Social Security – (The US passed this for a reason, to help us all. It’s everybody for themselves, GOP policies, will Ryan [ruin] this nation).

End Medicare/Medicaid – (Again we passed this for a reason. It should be improved on, not cancelled)

Then tell everyone at the top of their voice, "THE DEMOCRATS DID IT". "NOT US". (Make getting rid of Obama the #1 priority the next four years instead of trying to help “the everyday” person in the struggling USA during the 2nd worst depression since 1900 should be criminal and brought to justice).

College is a LUXURY... not a right or a given. If you cannot afford to go to college, then you don't go. Your entitlement mentality is exactly what is destroying America.

LOL... why not just say, "only rich people deserve a college education, poor people deserve to be stuck in menial jobs for their whole lives"?
