NBC/WSJ poll: Approval of Congress hits bottom

NBC's Chuck Todd and the National Journal's Major Garrett discuss the latest NBC News/WSJ poll.

The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that the approval rating for Congress has tied its all-time low in the history of the survey, while its disapproval rating has tied its all-time high.

According to the poll, only 12 percent of registered voters approve of the legislative branch's job. The only other time it was that low was in Oct. 2008.

In addition, a whopping 82 percent disapprove of Congress' job, and the only other time it reached that level was in Aug. 2011 -- which was right after the bruising debt-ceiling fight.

Much of this survey was conducted before two controversial or embarrassing incidents for House Republicans.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) -- who is the GOP's nominee in Missouri's Senate race -- explained his opposition to abortion even in cases of rape by saying: "If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut [the pregnancy] down."

Also on Sunday, Politico first reported that House Republicans last year took a dip in the Sea of Galilee in an evening involving alcohol; one member, Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) was nude.

The NBC/WSJ poll also shows that 36 percent view the Republican Party in a positive light, versus 45 percent who view it negatively.

By comparison, 42 percent have a favorable view of the Democratic Party, while 40 percent have a negative opinion. Both sets of numbers are similar to last month's.

The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted Aug. 16-20 of 1,000 registered voters (300 by cell phone) -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.

Vote Republican! The Depression Party.

Depressing a whole nation.

We are the do as we say party, not the do as we do party.

We do have morals we want you to follow even if we don't our selfs.

Anyone up for a dip?

Based on their voting to improve the economy in the recent past...I thought they were the Party of Nooo. And then they let me down by doing something....achieving the lowest possible approval rating.

Almost like....the US never had a Federal credit downgrade....before the TP'ers showed up. If I were a pure Republican...I would be soo embarrassed, with where the party is recklessly (and probably blindly) steering our nation.

Well maybe if they actually DID something they'd have more people on their side. All they do is a bunch of grandstanding, arguing/finger pointing & dick waving. The rest of the time they are out trying to get re-elected. Worthless bunch of hacks that not only need to be voted out but also left on an abandoned island to suffer among themselves.

The moron liberals here fail to see that the last time the rating was this low, it was a Democrat Congress.

And it's the Democrats who are going to lose big time in November.

              Why?

Because we are WORSE off now than before Barak Hussein Obama, college failure and foreign exchange student.

A 'community organizer' (read: professional protester) who has no skills other than being a divisive, petulant child.

              In one word, he SUCKS.

I note too that there is no talk from the loony left about "hope and change".

That's because now we know that Obama is an empty suit, and we've seen enough of his views to know what he is, and that is a ONE-term loser, like Jimmy Carter before him.

someone here is a moron. :)

the fact that both parties run congress now and it has as low a rating as 2008 means it isn't a problem with the parties specifically, its the whole congress is dysfunctional regardless of who is in there. Its not a dem or gop problem, our political system itself is failing.

and clue for the clueless: the whole "hussein" stuff went out years ago. try to stay up!

The fed govt is designed to be dysfunctional. The Constitution has a very short list of things the founding fathers thought it could handle and when its got outside that list; oooo surprise, they're not good at it. Your day to day conditions should be handled more by your state or local govts.

The Repugnants strongly believe in the moto: "Do as I say, not as I do !" They love to point fingers and find fault, but are always the first ones to swim naked inappropriately, try to sell women on ideas about "Rape" from the dark ages, and are always trying to lure the young pages (Male and female) into their clutches. They oppose every idea the Demos come up with, but never accomplish anything except to Look after and protect the 1%. Vote em out !

What I don't understand is why the American Public does not realize that all Pres. Obama has done his entire term in office is to clean up the f---ing mess the Repugnants left their last term in office !

Duh... I am surprised the disapproval vote was that high...

These elected people are after one thing and one thing only... how they can muster more money under the table from lobbyists... then comes the fighting against the other party, possible insider trading, learning how to filter salary and financial rewards to off shore accounts as to not pay their fair share of taxes, infighing amongst themselves, and literally have no idea or present/future plan to get us out of this economic problem we are mired in...

If they all do a bad job, they are exonerated and stay in their position. I we do a bad job, we get fired.

Here's the scary part ... come November 6th or January 20th will anything change? If Obama wins, does the GOP remain the party of "no" and wait for their next bite at the apple in 2016? If Romney wins do the DEMs play "payback" and try to block everything like the GOP has done?

I suspect - unfortunately - that one of those outcomes is highly likely, meaning another 4 years of stagnation in congress. As a country we can''t tolerate that. As a citizen I can't support that.

The candidate or the party that brings forward a commitment to work collaboratively to fix the problems that we face as a nation will get my vote. I don't care if it's the GOP, DEM, IND, or communists. This constant finger pointing and ass-covering does nothing to move us ahead as a nation.

As a citizen, I love this country and everything it stands for. As a citizen, I'm also tremendously disappointed in what we've become.

This problem is owned by the Republicans who have been the most divisive in the history of congress. However, the first two years of this administration the Democrats could have done a lot more and this would still be a liberal majority, despite the unprecedented and historic use of the filibuster by the Republicans. So in the final analysis, they should all have to go and start with a fresh new batch. The President of this country has had an uphill battle with the congress and the senate. It is time we give them a set that can actually work together and stop listening to their fringe megaphones.

Who's bright idea was it to create a stimulus to the tune of over $210 billion for the top 2%? How much did that lower the unemployment rate aye? Why don't we cut taxes for the wealthy after they have created jobs and lowered the unemployment rate?

sure is funny!!!! the law of the land doesn't apply to them, they are paid for life, they care only of being reelected, they dont really concern themselves with their constituancy, they ALL should not be reelected! any other person could do a better job knowing absolutly nothing. it would take a full term to learn how to steal, lie and be as bad for our nation as these clowns are republicans and democrats alike.......

Maybe we should institute 'Pay for Performance' like they want to do for teachers. So for this year, maybe Senators should get paid about $15k with no benefits.

HOME SALES TAX - BEGINS 2013

When does your home become part of your health care? After 2012!

Your vote counts big time in 2012, make sure you and all your friends and family know about this!

HOME SALES TAX I thought you might find this interesting. The National Association of Realtors is all over this and working to get it repealed, -- before it takes effect. But, I am very pleased we aren't the only ones who know about this ploy to steal billions from unsuspecting homeowners. How many realtors do you think will vote Democratic in 2012? Did you know that if you sell your house after 2012 you will pay a 3.8% sales tax on it? That's $3,800 on a $100,000 home, etc. When did this happen? It's in the health care bill, -- and it goes into effect in 2013. Why 2013? Could it be so that it doesn't come to light until after the 2012 elections? So, this is 'Obama change you can believe in'? Under the new health care bill all real estate transactions will be subject to a 3.8% sales tax. If you sell a $400,000 home, there will be a $15,200 tax. This bill is set to screw the retiring generation, -- who often downsize their homes. Does this make your November, 2012 vote more important? Oh, you weren't aware that this was in the ObamaCare bill? Guess what; you aren't alone! There are more than a few members of Congress that weren't aware of it either.
