Romney: A tale of two parties

“A subcommittee helping to draft the Republican Party platform approved preliminary language Monday that would affirm ‘dignity and respect’ for gay Americans but a definition of marriage as the union of ‘one man and one woman’ is likely to be included, according to the leader of a conservative gay rights group advising the GOP,” the Boston Globe notes, adding, “Earlier this month, the Democratic platform committee endorsed same-sex marriage and approved language calling for repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.”

“The committee drafting the Republican Party’s platform rejected a bid to include a plank calling for preservation of the mortgage interest tax deduction Monday,” the Wall Street Journal writes.

Here’s a headline the Romney campaign probably didn’t think they’d have to deal with: “Romney, Ryan slam GOP rep for nude swim in Israel,” USA Today writes today.

“Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, suffered the loss of a stillborn son — but have never spoken publicly about it,” the New York Daily News writes. “News of the difficulty was buried deep in a lengthy Associated Press profile of the GOP contender’s wife on Saturday that attributed news of the pregnancy loss to ‘a source close to Mrs. Romney.’ The profile said the would-be First Lady lost the baby several months into her pregnancy, which took place after the birth of their son Ben in 1978 and before the birth of their youngest child, Craig, in 1981. Romney campaign officials declined to provide further information.”

Romney told a Yankees fan yesterday at his rally that “We all hate Yankees.” Paul Ryan stepped in for the save, the New York Daily News writes: “But not you, sir. We love you.” The man replied: “I back winners and that’s why I’m backing you.”

The GOP can't have it both ways. Want to affirm dignity and respect for gay Americans? Ensure that they have the same rights as everyone else.

PS - How come nobody can tell me what we are supposedly defending marriage from?

Gay Americans DO have the same rights under the U.S. Constitution as everyone else. The Republican/Conservative movement in this country is attempting to deny them their rights.

Just like dinosaurs, the GOP must evolve or die off.

The big news is that the GOP refuses to include a plank that the mortgage interest deduction will not be repealed. Perhaps because the only way that the Ryan budget can both lower taxes on the wealthy and avoid cutting defense is to gut middle class tax deductions like the mortgage interest deduction.

Tmess, I had to go to the WSJ article to be sure I understood what was going on here...the GOP wants to keep their platform language as "vanilla" as possible so they can pull the rug from under middle-class home owners later on. For many middle-class people, their net worth is largely tied up in their homes. Furthermore, the affordability of the mortgage was based on an offsetting tax deduction. If that goes away, you can bet there will be a whole new rash of foreclosures.

This deduction is far less important to the very wealthy as their homes represent only a small percentage of their net worth. But it reminds me of what Romney said earlier this year about under-water mortgages...let it foreclose and investors will take it off your hands!

same crap regan pulled, tax cut for all and then removed the interest rate deduction, the license plate deduction, etc. so everyone ended up paying the same or higher amount, but the 1% got a 50% tax cut.

Maybe we're approaching tax reform from the wrong direction. Instead of ensuring everyone pays the same tax rate - how about ensuring we keep the same percentage of our earnings? Romney effectively keeps 87% of his earnings, but the same isn't true for middle-class workers earning $50K per year once you factor in all the other taxes

I'm guessing the plank reads something like this:

The Republican party affirms the dignity of homosexual Americans. Not the same dignity afforded to straight Americans, of course, whereby they might have equal rights and liberties. No, the Republican party staunchly supports second-class dignity for them instead, denying them the right to marry, or even to civil unions that are the equal of marriage, denying them the right to serve their country openly in the military, denying them the right to adopt children, denying them the right to teach or coach children, or really to interact with children in any way, and denying them whatever other rights any state should decide is appropriate.

The Republican party affirms its respect for homosexual Americans. Even though the Republican party views them all as unrepentant, depraved, hell-bound sinners who could choose to change their orientation if they wanted to and who undermine the very moral fabric of the country by their mere presence, we still respect their free will to reject salvation and embrace sin, at least until Jesus comes back to teach those good for nothing evildoers a lesson on judgement day by slaughtering all of them mercilessly and then torturing them for eternity like they really deserve.

A Tale of two parties, well that is a rare correct statement from romney, they also want two classes - the mega wealthy and the very poor and they know the best way to accomplish both is to deny a woman the right to police her own body and remove public education.

I loved it that the President had a successful press conference yesterday, in which he got some punches in on Willard. Heck I think he should have one every week up until the election.

Use that bully pulpit and get the National attention while slamming Willard and exposing this republican cult for the liars they are.
