Akin pledges to stay in race following rape comments, GOP criticism

Missouri Republican Rep. Todd Akin apologized Monday for comments he made about "legitimate rape" over the weekend, but rejected growing clamor even from fellow Republicans for him to abandon his Senate bid.

Akin, who's been embroiled in an uproar since suggesting that "legitimate rape" rarely results in victims' pregnancy, acknowledged he made "serious mistakes" in responding to a question about his stance on abortion rights in cases on rape.

"I made that statement in error. Let me be clear: rape is never legitimate; it's an evil act that's committed by violent predators," Akin said on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's radio show. "I used the wrong words in the wrong way. What I said was ill-conceived and it was wrong, and for that, I apologize."

The Cycle hosts discuss Rep. Todd Akin's comments this past weekend that pregnancy was not common in cases of "legitimate rape."

Akin first told KTVI-TV on Sunday: “First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

The Missouri congressman said Monday that he understood that it was possible for pregnancies to result from an instance of rape.

But the six-term congressman, who bested two other candidates in a GOP Senate primary earlier this month, resisted dropping his campaign to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

"I feel just as strongly as ever that my background and ability will be a big asset in replacing Claire McCaskill and putting some sanity back in what's going on in our government," Akin said, explaining that no national Republican figure had specifically called to demand his resignation. "The good people of Missouri nominated me, and I'm not a quitter. And my belief is we're going to take this thing forward, and by the grace of God, to win this race."

In a statement and a Tweet, conservative congressman Todd Akin says he "misspoke" during a local TV interview in which he made comments about "legitimate rape" and abortion. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

However, two Senate Republicans have already said Akin should abandon his Senate bid. Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown and Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson both called for Akin to resign his Senate nomination. (If he were to do so by Tuesday, Republicans would have a clearer path toward nominating a new candidate.)

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who heads the GOP's Senate campaign efforts, called Akin's statements "wrong, offensive, and indefensible." He called on Akin to "carefully consider what is best for him, his family, the Republican Party, and the values that he cares about and has fought for throughout his career in public service."

Former congresswoman and current Senate candidate from New Mexico, Heather Wilson, has also called on Akin to step aside.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., joins Morning Joe to discuss Rep. Todd Akin's, R-Mo., statement that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy, which he said during a television interview.

Other Republicans have also been critical of Akin, including presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who called the congressman's remarks "inexcusable." Romney will not call for Akin to step down from the race, though, adviser Stu Stevens told reporters in New Hampshire.

President Barack Obama, during an appearance Monday afternoon in the White House briefing room, also condemned Akin's remarks.

"The views expressed were offensive. Rape is rape," said Obama. "And the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we're talking about doesn't make sense to the American people. And certainly doesn't make sense to me."

NBC's Peter Alexander contributed to this report.

Thank you Mr. President! It will be interesting to see how the GOP will try to create distance between Akin and Ryan given their co-sponsorship of bill H.R. 3, “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” which initially included language which changed the definition of “rape” to “forcible rape." (I'm guessing forcible rape is legitimate rape?!?!?!)

Let ME be clear: Todd Akin is an idiot. He is stupid, dumb, brainless and inept. Furthermore, he has NO business representing a single woman, let alone the women of his entire congressional district.

If he were a REAL man, if he had cojones that were any bigger than peas, he would apologize for his stupidity and drop out of the race, immediately.

We need more useless idiots in government like we need more holes in our heads. How can someone so lacking in basic intelligence even be trusted to cross the street?

If he actually does stay in the race as he says he will, I hope he loses by the biggest landslide in the history of Missouri politics. Make that happen, women of the Show Me State!

Let's face it. The GOP does not trust in women's ability to decide for themselves. A woman is raped and them she is forced to carry the rapists child. Sorry, but I can't think of anything more traumatic and inhumane. Once the child is born no one really cares, she is an immoral single mother after all. The guy might spend 5 years in jail, you will be tried twice in a he said/she said trial if at all, them you get to spend the next 18 years raising his child. Sorry, but pure cruelty for a woman to have to face that. Everyone is always talking about small government, but they want to dictate what we do with our bodies. No way! A woman should be able to make these decisions with her doctor, not her senator!

This is why people really need to research and make sure that they are vetted prior to running for office. Elections have consequences - just like if "God forebid" Romeny gets in what type of Judge do you think he will appoint to the SCOTUS?

It wasn't too many years ago that women could not vote. It wasn't too many years before that when women were considered a mans property.

I would be interested in knowing how many of these Republicans that are now quickly distancing themselves from Todd Akins voted for the bill he co-sponsored with Paul Ryan that introduced the term "forcible rape".

They remind me of a bunch of cockroaches scurrying for cover when the light is turned on.

Rape by definition is forcible, whether actual physical force is used or not. In their quest to totally eliminate a woman's right to choose, almost the entire Republican party embraced this legislation that created different levels of rape.

Apparently statuatory rape and incest are not considered "forcible" rape, so the victim would be forced to carry the fetus/baby to term.

I find it especially hypocritical that the supposed party of "small government" think that they, not the victims or their doctors, should decide whether a rape is "forcible" enough for them to qualify for an abortion.

The Tea Party needs to stay focused on fiscal issues, those that really matter regarding the survival of our democracy, not divisive social issues. The latter are the playground of the President, stay on issues of substance like the economy, unemployment, and the unsustainable level of spending and our national debt.

This is what independent voters care about, not what goes on in your bedroom or your church. If social issues are that important to you run for Pope but not Congress or the Senate.

Bear in mind, this is just ONE belief that he holds... and that he shares with Ryan. What are the other misconceptions floating through his skull (along with some incapacitated and misfiring neurons)?

Akin was just a few baby steps away from being a major influence to the possible future President of the United States before this remark--before he exposed himself for the ignorant misogynist that he is.

Ryan is standing side by side with Romney, worked with Akin last year on redefining "forcible rape," and there is the edge of possibility that he could also be the President of the United States, should Romney be hired and then suffer an accident or illness.

Does this scare anyone as much as it scares me?

Even his apology demonstrated his ignorance. Not all rapes are "committed by violent" predators. Predators? Absolutely! Violent? Usually, pedophiles groom their victims and do not require violence to obtain their goal. They prey on children that have regard for authority and/or are troubled and in need of attention. Incest is another matter. Would you expect a child to carry to term the off spring of her father. My mother is also my sister??? His ignorance knows no bounds and he is not fit to represent anyone in the human race. This is a matter of choice between a woman and her physcian and has no place in govt.. What a total ignorant loser. He really needs an education about child abuse, rape, and what it means to the woman/girl that suffers. It is very dangerous for a child to have a child. Childbirth is not for sissies. He needs to crawl back under the rock he slithered out of.

I also apologize for my attempts to control the entire female population of the United States by directing bills and measures to keep their bodies out of their control, and in the control of the government--and yes, I know that my party advocates less government in personal life, so I must also apologize for my hypocrisy in that area as well. This would just be a story about an idiot politician from Missouri, and would be taken as isolated case of a backwoods fanatic, but it is not an isolated case the republican party has these nutjobs in all kinds of places trying and in some cases passing legislation that imposes their personal religious views on women. This is national news because the republican has gone national with this agenda of trying to muck up Roe V Wade and the fact that a women has the choice to terminate a pregnancy if she so desires. This is what these people think, he was asked a question he answered it without the aid of prepared talking points, and as usual republicans want to blame the media for asking the question, and not the idiotic answer given by a six term politician. It amazes me just how stupid some of these politicians really are, is it any wonder that they let the lobbyists write the legislation for them. We should require some kind of an IQ test, or an SAP for national office. This guy wants to write reproductive rights legislation, and thinks that a women's body has the ability to shut her system down in the case of rape, do they even teach sex education in Missouri, do they teach biology in high school. I hope this guy does stay in the race, it will be great news for Democrats locally in Missouri and nationally, let him speak, he makes the case for voting against republicans better than any democrat could. I will say one thing a lot of his fellow republicans have no problem with the idea of aborting his senate campaign in it's fetal stage, I guess he is suddenly a bit of an unwanted pregnancy they would prefer not to bring to full term, but Akin says hey fellows remember "I'm a politician not a choice".

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

(bolded part was to help you with my point)

He was given bad (possible) advice from some doctors. This was not his personal ramblings, this was information he was given and repeating.

At least with Obama and Biden, they didn't reference anything when Obama said "the private sector is fine" or "you didn't build that" or when Biden recently said that banks were "going to put ya'll in chains." Those were their own words, their opinions, speaking at the time.

Akin was just repeating what he was told. He was given bad advice and should have looked further into it before repeating it in public. People should know the difference between speaking of one's mind and speaking with somebody else's mind...

Eric-913730 Don't forget that Ryan co-sponsored a bill with Akin to redefine rape so that you could not get an abortion in cases of incest, grooming, etc....... hence the term "legitimate rape".

Notice how quiet Ryan is being on this one.

Grant you, Akin's remarks were despicable. But FYI, HR Bill 3 had 227 co-sponsored and those included Democrats. The Bill was revised 3 times HR358IH (the first change) changed two words, none of which had anything to do with "not" getting an abortion for rape or incest.

The amendment as originally written:

Excludes from such prohibitions an abortion if: (1) the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest; or (2) the woman suffers from a physical disorder, injury, or illness, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, that would place her in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, as certified by a physician.

changed to:

except--`(A) if the pregnancy occurred because the pregnant female was the subject of an act of forcible rape or, if a minor, an act of incest; or

`(B) in the case where a pregnant female suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the female in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself.

  • Two words. Understand the majority of Congress members are Lawyers so they all have to make it a legal as they possibly can! One, incest usually only occurs to a minor who has no defense against an adult. But a lawyer would think oh my an adult who can make that decision might claim incest so we better clarify this. Unfortunately there are some women that claim they were raped just to get back at the man. Making it much harder for women who have been raped. Adding Forcible would mean that it had to be proved in a court of law that the woman was indeed raped. Again a lawyers way of thinking.

You need to read the Bills before you make a comment on them. You would have found that not only did Republican's support it, Democrats supported it also and what you were state is totally false.

Females of certain mammalian species, notably rabbits (there may be others but I'm not sure of those at the moment) can spontaneously reabsorb a fetus into their bodies if the time isn't 'right'--the colony is overcrowded, there is insufficient food available, they are in the middle of migration, etc. and therefore prevent production of offspring at a time when it would be dangerous to the collective colony to do so. It is scientific fact, and it has been documented in nonfiction and in fiction such as Richard Adams' book 'Watership Down'.

In the novel quoted above it anthropomorphizes rabbit colonies and relationships, ascribing to the rabbits in the story human characteristics. One female rabbit is raped and her body reabsorbs the fetus. However, important note; this is FICTION and the story is about RABBITS.

    Dear Representative Akin;

I don't know where you you got the information that a human female is capable of shutting down reproductive processes in instances of rape, but the information itself is erroneous and flawed. While trauma, stress, emotional issues arising from financial and economic instability from an unwanted pregnancy MAY cause a miscarriage, it is not common and does not happen often. One needs only to look at the women in the deportation camps in Germany of the 30's to see the numbers of female internees who became pregnant due to rape by the camp guards, which are well-documented. You need only to look up cases of young children, as young as nine or ten, who give birth to the children of their molesters, to see the reality.

We who have experienced the trauma of rape, either with or without children, would like to invite you to sit down and talk to us. Get to know us. Visit a battered women's shelter, talk to rape crisis counselors, look at the statistics. Please feel free to bring whatever medical professional advised you so that he/they too can be informed of the reality of rapes resulting in births.

    Thank you.

I'm just showing you that the door swings both ways. You can't have one standard by assuming a second standard. I'm just pointing out the double standards the liberal media and several liberal posters on this website have. That way, nobody would take their words seriously (if anyone still does anymore).

It is better to find out the facts of the world by looking at both sides of the coin. If you only look at one side of the argument, you blind yourself to see the reality of the world.

I see the liberal hate is still strong on this site.

It is clear from what he said that his 'legitimate rape' statement was meant to divide thought between actual rape and women who decide they didn't want sex after the fact (i.e. the next morning they decide it was a mistake, so they claim it was rape). The first are victims of a horrible assault, but the very fear, stress, and horror of that assault releases chemicals into their blood system that severely decrease the odds of an embryo implanting on their womb. This is what he was talking about. This makes rape pregnancies rare, but not impossible.

The second are an unfortunate result of the modern feminism movements, telling women they have the right to decide whatever they want about anything involving their bodies whenever they want, even after the fact. This is only one of the most extremist edges of feminism, but it is real and prosperous in America today nonetheless.

Finally, the real issue at hand should not be how the woman got pregnant, but whether the embryo/fetus/child is a human life with human rights or not. If it isn't, the Right's arguments are flat out ridiculous. If it is, the Left's arguments are flat out monstrous. Do you want to know what's worse than forcing a raped woman to carry her rapists child to terms? Murdering an innocent baby because it's father did something wrong.

The fact that the mother was raped, and even the fact that the mother may suffer psychological pain and suffering to bring the baby into the world is very unfortunate, but it doesn't excuse murder. If the mother brought the baby to term, gave birth to it, and THEN decided to strangle it, we'd all agree she should either go to prison or a mental ward, the rape not withstanding. Of course, all of that is only if the child IS a human being with human rights.

All of that aside, though, I know nothing about the man himself, his policies, or his history. He may well be a complete jerk who's only in it for the money.

“No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” which initially included language which changed the definition of “rape” to “forcible rape." (I'm guessing forcible rape is legitimate rape?!?!?!)

I think it's the other way around.

Warning: there are some horrible ideas below, so prepare to be disgusted. But that -is- how they think.

Remember, according to them, rape isn't a crime against the woman, it's against the man who owns the woman. Illegitimate rape is when some OTHER man, aside from her owner, rapes the woman. Legitimate rape is when her owner has sex with her without her consent. Since they are such nice compassionate people, this kind of disturbs them, but being small-government folk, they don't really think it is their place to interfere in the family so they look away with heavy hearts.

Of course, they will nicely sugarcoat 'owner' to something else, but that's what it boils down to.

Mr. Akin's sin is that he told he truth. Nothing more.

So a woman traumatized by a brutal rape (possibly both anal and vaginal), and (for the sake of argument) a severe beating, after spending time in a hospital and encountering a mountain of medical bills, must then spend the next nine months carrying her rape-baby around just because YOU don't want its life taken?

Are YOU going to provide that mother with physical therapy and psychological counseling to help her get over that horrific incident? Are YOU going to take her into your home, give her food and clothing, pay for her prenatal vitamins, check-ups, and provide transportation to and from those appointments? Are YOU going to be there to supplement her income when she can no longer work? Are YOU going to pay for the birth and any surgery that may be necessary (i.e. Caesarian), as well as taking care of the infant if it is premature? And above all, are YOU going to take that baby into your home when she cannot bear to look at it, after carrying an unwanted pregnancy around for nine months, because every time she looks into its eyes, she sees her attacker?

An innocent stranger's question of, "Oh, how far along are you?" will then bring the answer to the mother's mind, "I was raped x months ago." Is that fair, too? To live with that burden?

Is it also fair that the U.S. Government--whom the Republican party INSISTS should not interfere in daily life any more than it already has ("less government!" is the cry, is it not?)--can decide that a woman in every circumstance of an unwanted pregnancy should keep that child inside her?

I don't know if you saw the story that was on the news over the weekend. A 16 year old girl in the Dominican Republic as diagnosed with leukemia--at the same time she found out she was 9 weeks pregnant. Because they have a very strict no-abortion policy there, they define life as beginning at the moment of conception. The doctors refused to give her chemotherapy for the leukemia because it would kill the baby. Late last week she went into early labor due to complications from the untreated leukemia, miscarried, then went into cardiac arrest also because of leukemia complications, and died.

At least as offensive as his statement was the logic behind it and it's intended goal. The fact is there is a large contingent of Republicans who think that there is no legitimate reason for abortion. These predominately male politicians have suggested that a woman and even girls should be forced by penalty of arrest must carry a child that was the result of rape or incest to term. There was even one who claimed that if raped the victim was given a "lemon" and by carrying this fetus to term would be making "lemonade". And this mouthbreather is a woman. Ryan and Romney have both voiced support for or sponsored "Personhood" laws that would make them all become sidewalk lemonade vendors.

There should have been no hesitation or qualification behind the response of the campaign. Both Romney and Ryan should have stood tall and denounced this moron and demanded he leave the governing of the country to thinking people. This man is part of the party they represent.

Ha too funny Michael, give me a break, republicans put this guy on the tech and science committee he worked with Ryan on legislation on this subject, this guys view are no surprise to republicans he was TV saying what many republicans want to hear from their candidates he actually thought this would help him, his statements were meant to reflect core principles for republicans.

So what is the big lesson here that republicans will immediately turn their backs on a candidate that had so much favor in their party the first time it makes a little political trouble for their presidential candidate and the VP candidate that he worked on legislation with on this very subject. So the lesson is that republicans can't bury this guy fast enough, not because of his views, they know this guy's views, he is a six term Congressman, and they had him working on legislation on this very subject, but that they are aborting him because he is suddenly politically pregnant. What's the lesson, politics first idealogy second, because the sad truth is that there a lot of people in Mo who have supported this guy for six terms because of his views on this very subject, he was a walk in the park for re-election to the House, but republicans liked him so much they talked him into going for the Senate seat for them, now they bail out on him because he made political trouble for them not because of his views, they knew full well what this guys views were. So tell me what is the mighty lesson we should learn from this, is the lesson republicans put politics first and foremost, or is the lesson that republican leadership has no clue about a six term member who is on the tech and science committee and is co writing legislation for them that attempts to redefine rape.

Ok, so let me get this straight. Grothman in Wisconsin wants single parenthood to be classified as child abuse, Ryan supported a bill that supports the rights of a rapist to sue their victims in order to stop an abortion, and this idiot says that legitimate rape doesn't cause pregnancies. This is my interpretation:

Women need to keep their mouths closed and open their legs to men when men want it, marry them, and be forced to have children, as they are only nitwit c*&dumpsters, and completely compliant and never to be trusted to make decisions of their own.

Welcome to the USA. The only developed country where women's rights are being rescinded and where corporations are receiving rights to basically enslave their workers. Gotta make those babies, so they can starve, and those who survive will just be tossed out into the poisoned fields. If things go in the GOP's favor, in ten years, Mexico is going to have an illegal immigration problem.

Did anyone see ole Big Ears tell another whopper at his surprise appearance at the WH daily press meeting? We (the campaign) did not say Romney committed a felony. Setphanie Cutter is dispicable and rest assured she will do it again and again and he'll keep lying for her.

His apology was explained on the Mike Huckelberry show as he used the wrong word. Instead of legitimate rape he meant forcible rape. Now there's a difference without a distinction.

No doubt about it, Akin needs to step down...the comments was tasteless and ignorant. But, if every time a politician said something insensitive, tasteless, and hurtful Obama would need a new running mate. I see the Republican leadership is joining with many of the Democrats in calling for Akin to go.....sorry it doesn't work the same way when a Democrat like Uncle Joe gets caught over and over again saying stupid things.

Akin really thinks that there are MAGICAL FORCES at work preventing pregnancy from rape?

We all know what he was insinuating by "legitimate rape", he was talking about his belief that there are a lot of slutty women around that just "claim" rape when they get mad at a man, or were "asking for it " by wearing something slutty.

The truth is Paul Ryan and Todd Akin believe the same thing and have co-sponsored this kind of rape legislation in the recent past. What hypocrisy, Republicans condemning a public comment even though that’s how most of them think, what their really condemning is the fact that Akin made the comment publicly. Every day the Republican Party becomes more radical and is constantly creating an atmosphere that promotes this type of 10th century thinking...

If any main stream Republican actually stood up right now and said “We must end this behavior and start listening to the American people” I would be amazed. The sad truth is every Republican with the courage to make a statement like that has been driven from the party by extreme right wing elements.

Backward ideas, laws that strip away individual freedoms, the suppression of voting rights and a tax policy that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer these things are what the Republican/Tea Party really stands for. The Republican/Tea Party advances their radical agenda by using an never ending river of lies and has turned into an evil greed based entity that can no longer be trusted by the American people.

Let's be honest. The ONLY reason why republicans are asking Akin to step down from the race is because they know that he won't get that seat in the Senate now and they want to get a guy/gal in there who can. It's NOT because they disagree with what he said. There's nothing honorable about what they're doing at all. It's just politics as usual.

Akin needs to step down. This is very unfortunate for the rest of us in Missouri that want to support a GOP candidate but will not be supporting Akin. And I definitely will not be supporting McCaskill either. Akin needs to step down and get out of the way, otherwise, fiscally conservative Republicans in Missouri will have little choice in this election as we are left with a choice to vote for a tax dodger and Obama surrogate in McCaskill or an idiot, socially conservative Akin.

Who gave you the idea republicans are "fiscally conservative"? They just blow the money on big useless wars and the military instead of blowing it on big useless social programs.

Everyone just calm down. What he said was idiotic, which he himself admitted to.

We've also said stupid things before - apologize and move on.

In fact, this is one of the only times I've ever heard a politician admit to doing something stupid and apologizing for it (Rick Perry and his forgetting the government agency was another - although there was no turning back from that lol...).

Contrast that to Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, who reached for a pathetic excuse when explaining his "y'll..chains" remark, by trying to say that it was in response to the Republicans' use of the term 'unshackled'.

It's almost too bad...when someone admits to making a mistake, they get roasted. But when they deny it at all costs, even when they are lying straight up, we somehow don't judge them as harshly.

N...He is being judge harshly because what he said was harsh--and ignorant. In his world, the rapes that occurred in the fictional movie "The Color Purple" were legitimate. It is worth seeing, if you haven't. No, these children were not aborted, but they were taken from their mother without her consent. Are we really back to that kind of thinking? What he said is a bombshell to every woman that wants to have some say over what she chooses to do with her body. So many women get pregnant and are abandoned by their significant others. So many single women with children they cannot afford to provide the bare necessities for, like education, food, clothing, a father figure....This isn't what govt. should be making decisions about. Women should be making these decisions with guidance from other wise and competent people. I am not blaming men--It was the woman's choice in many cases to have unprotected sex--but, many just don't step up to the plate and support their offspring. Many do, as well. The stats are pretty clear on who will hit the poverty line if they become pregnant and are single. He should be judged harshly because he has to take personal responsibility for what he says and believes.

If the Republicans used the term "unshackled" - and nobody seems to be denying that - then doesn't it stand to reason (work with me on this) that Biden could talk about the Republicans' plan for eliminating regulations on Wall St. as "shackling"? In other words, for you trying to invent a controversy, does Biden get to use the same word to express an opposite opinion? Especially when you know he meant not blacks, but every investor in America who was "shackled" by the big banks with mortgages based on "liar loans" and all manner of fraud? It's an absolutely incredible reach to say that he was racist on this - and you know that too.

Colorblind-2498596 -- I would recommend the movie Precious as well.

Incest is the most common rape, and a repeated rape that results in pregnancy, often repeated pregnancy -- As well as a higher rate of deformity. The extremism of "personhood" legislation Paul Ryan supports would make abortion in the case of incest illegal. Understand we are talking about criminalizing abortion for the victim and doctor under any circumstance.

Christian Sharia Law is NOT mainstream. Send a message to these religious radicals and vote them out!

@ImjustaBilltoo - because there are still some men (and unfortunately women) who believe that only rape by force and violence is really rape. Which negates date rape - which probably happens more frequently than the rape Akin and Ryan believe in. And is probably reported less than the definition of rape Akin and Ryan believe in. How ANY woman in MO could vote for such a misogynistic individual is beyond my comprehension. Obviously he failed his high school biology class. And what is more disconcerting is that he currently sits on a House committee dealing with science and health matters. Obviously intelligence was NOT part of that committee selection process.

StandUp, Yes it does bother me that Akin is on the House Science and Technology Committee, just as it bothers me that Bachman is on the Intelligence Committee. What is going on here?

This is worth repeating. After the revolution in Iran, people were appointed to office based on how well they knew the Koran. Soon the country was going down the toilet due to incompetence -- similarly during Dubya and the Bible-toting inner circle of the White House to the DOJ and scandal thereof.

Bachmann and Akin get their committee rewards because they are the faithful, the lock-in-stop voters, and the crazy-talk fund raisers. The GOP/TP promote based on these things, not competence or any other criteria of true merit. Aside from having nothing left but old failed voodoo economics and neocon foreign policies as a platform, this is one reason the Teapublicans suck so much. And the reason some Republicans have left and are leaving office.

We know this because it was well voiced that Obama rubbed shoulders with Bill Ayers and it made no difference in the election. There was still enough conservative vote to put him over (or through) the fence, so it shouldn't affect the left vote for Romney this time around.

      Longdin:

No, I don't believe for one second that Biden didn't use that phrase purposefully.

First of all, he was talking in a neighbourhood that is 3/4 Black. Secondly, the Republicans' use of the word 'unshackled' is very general - they were never speaking directly to blacks in instances when they used it.

Thirdly - get real. If you actually think Biden wasn't doing it on purpose, you're either stupid or just have no ability to view the situation objectively. "They're going to put y'all back in chains" - said directly to a group of blacks. Are you kidding me? Obama's excuse for that was pathetic...the guy just can't admit to anything. His first response would have been "it was all Bush"

I don't think it's such a big deal - Biden should have just apologized, and I then I couldn't have cared less. Everyone make mistakes - real men have the balls to admit to them.

On another note: Republicans have to stop harping on gay marriage and abortion. They are literally shooting themselves in the foot. When people accuse the Republican party of backwardism...it's hard to defend when they make comments like these.

Heard this on the radio from an OBGYN doctor who stated that in the case of a forced rape, if the victim is traumatized enough her body chemistry can change from that and cause her vaginal and uterus area to become acidic enough that it would kill the sperm and egg thus preventing a pregnancy. So, what he said is factually true. While it isn't the case 100% of the time, the body can actually kill the sperm and egg before actual pregnancy takes hold.

I for one am a fiscal conservative but I do support a womens right to choose up to a point. My only issues with abortion is late term where it is performed after the 2nd trimester (at this point the baby can survive from a premature birth with proper medical care and grow up to live a normal life, just like my friends 6 year old daughter who was a 28 week premie resulting from her mother being involved in a car accident) and tax dollars paying for it. Outside of that I don't have any other issues with abortion.

Interesting that you would attempt to defend the indefensible. But going with your line of reasoning, would you argue then that the conversation we should REALLY be having is making sure that the "legitimate" rapists should be sure to use enough force in order to make sure the victim is traumatized enough so that an abortion isn't ever necessary.

          I see .....(wowwwwww!)

Question: So, if the victim fails to be adequately cooperative with her rapist, and despite the "legitimate" rapist's BEST EFFORTS the victim is not adequately traumatized to change her body chemistry, ... is that then HER fault?

You NeoRepublicans really don't get it do you? It's not that he said something stupid; you're right, everyone does that now and then. It's that he not only believes it, he attempted to legislate it with Paul Ryan's help. You see, that's far worse than any comment Biden made that you might think is stupid. He didn't try to turn his comments and insane Taliban like "Sharia Law" into the law of the land. You people have a real problem and I suggest you pull your head out and take a look at what you support.

          The Republican brand is doomed.

It happened before..when the Federalists disappeared in the early 19th century due to ... guess what ...self-destruction, starting during its heyday in the 1790s.

The GOP is the reincarnation of the Federalist party.

This time, when the GOP disappears in the end, the US will soon have two parties too, the one is the Democratic party, the real grand old party; and the other will soon emerge - the FSFP, that is, the Forever Second Fiddle Party - thus the US will change from a two party system to a one-party dominant system

"putting some sanity back in what's going on in our government." ???

And this is a sane man? As screwed up as this country is, I think I'll take it the way it is, thank you very much. And let us not for get, for a minute, how we got here and who caused it. Short term memory loss doesn't cut it, folks.

Wayne-1656909... "one of the most important spokesmen for your party!" If you say so. Apparently water does seek it's own level.

CommonSense_not2Common... Right. And you should try using a little. I guess it's okay for an arrogant troglodyte like John Bohener to refer to "The American People" though, huh? Well, you can leave me out of that one.

Im not sure why the GOP is acting all upset about this, if you look at the legislation they have been trying to pass the last two years, in the states in in DC, you will find that this is really what they believe in. The republican party is not the party of my fathers time. They want to take away all womens rights. They claim they want small government unless it has to do with a womans body, then they want total control. So GOP you can quit your fake outrage we really dont believe it.

Akin said: "I feel just as strongly as ever that my background and ability will be a big asset in replacing Claire McCaskill and putting some sanity back in what's going on in our government," Akin said, explaining that no national Republican figure had specifically called to demand his resignation. "The good people of Missouri nominated me, and I'm not a quitter. And my belief is we're going to take this thing forward, and by the grace of God, to win this race."

Akin is delusional. Tell me, what would Jesus do? He'd whip that woman-haten of a man, Akin. Everything dealing with women and their rights, Akin has a paper trail of disapproval and voted against ANYTHING for women. And Paul Ryan is joined-at-the-hip with Akin on women's issues, as well. But let's not stop there--Akin and Ryan also want to gut Medicare, Social Security and anything else that benefits the poor and those that just need a leg up. And unless you're in the 2% Club, you've needed a "leg up" from time to time.

Speaker of the House, (R) John Boehner, used the term, "Shackled" when talking about Wall Street; Vice President, (D) Biden used the term, "Chains." "Potato - Potahto." Both were referring to the money "strong hold" that is Wall Street.

It seems that the Repubs have been shoveling too much Chit-fil-A down their throats. All that hormone injected, Monsanto genetically engineered mystery meat, toxin-filled fries and fructose-laden soft drinks, have polluted their conservative minds. Don't believe me? Just look at 'em! Most have those "super-sized" bodies, like Rove and Limbaugh.

Yes Akin, the good people of Missouri now know your true colors--and God always did. You say no one on the National level has asked you to step down? They have--you're just too thick headed to realize it. But you will.

Here is what every American should really be talking about and it will scare the crap out of everyone who supported or now supports Obama!!!

            1) Obama has increased our national debt by almost 6 trillion dollars in just 3 ½ short years. That is $4.24 billion per day increased debt! This is more debt than was accumulated by all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined and is destined to destroy the future of every household in America, end of story! Were this the private sector, any CEO in America would have been summarily fired for this type of “criminal handling” of American fiscal policy!

            2) Obama’s reckless spending has been so devastating that, even if clear thinking America’s could vote him out of office, it would take a permanent,
across-the-board tax increase of 60% just to begin to balance the budget within the next 10 years.
Think about that for a minute.

The impact of such reckless spending has the potential to force 90% of currently working Americans into living in utter dire poverty.

For those who think that can’t happen, think again!!!

3)The takers have been kept fat and happy so far living off the efforts of others, borrowed money that the yet unborn will have to repay. Obama allows millions of illegal aliens to flow into our care. We then provide all their necessities of life - food, shelter, education, medical care, clothing and all you can eat taco bars in a thinly veiled effort to “buy votes” from yet another group the “Obama administration strategists” characterize as one dimensional, intellectually compromised, single issue constituencies.

Many of the liberal posts in this chat comfirm Obama's "one dimensional, intellectually compromised, single issue constituencies" characterization!

            4) Under Obama, the S&P has already downgraded the U.S. sovereign debt rating from AAA to AA+. Should Obama be reelected, there will be yet another downgrade as early as 2013. The implications of this are major. The U.S. cannot run its day-to-day operations without borrowing money. Anything that impacts its ability to borrow money has serious consequences. China and other nations are likely to reduce or halt extending more and more loans by buying U.S. Treasury securities. Premier Wen Jiabao of China recently expressed concern that the Obama Administration is causing the U.S. to be viewed as “something of a, well, deadbeat. "We have made a huge amount of loans to the United States. Of course we are concerned about the safety of our assets!”

Fearing the fact that Obama’s socialist deficit spending will bring about an economic
doomsday in the US, the Chinese have now become a net-seller of Treasuries resulting in an increase of 41 basis points in 19 trading sessions. Obama has bankrupt America. So, who will buy our debt in the furture?

            5) In order to limit the likelihood of a near term a default stemming from this massive deficit spending the Fed will continue “monetizing” his debt. In effect Obama’s reckless spending forces the Fed to commit grand larceny. Rather than honestly repaying what it has borrowed, the government merely prints up extra currency and uses it to pay its loans. The debt is “monetized”…transformed into an increase in the money supply, thereby lowering the purchasing power of everybody’s savings and creating inflation. The the U.S. adjusted monetary base has been expanded by 100 billion dollars in the last 2 months alone!

6)This is precisely why every American household is struggling to make ends meet and why Obama is in effect forcing you to take a shopping cart full of cash every time you buy groceries or buy gas. To make matters worse, his energy policy is criminal and will likely result in gas prices of over $6 per gallon in less than 3 years!

Do your research American, we cannot withstand 4 more years of this!

If you have a brain in your head, now is the time to use it!

            7) The Obama administration has metastasized into a pathological cancer on our society, but we can start to cut the cancer out in November!

Jim Missouri is the Audacity of Dopes complaining about our failed education system because (as he claims) folks don't understand the definition of the word "legitimate" as used in that context. I agree our education system is lacking, but rather because of posts like C. Smith who defend Akin and such quackery as women being able to prevent pregnancy by willing their bodies to do so from the trauma of rape.

It's good to see that both of their posts have been collapsed. This is another example of anti-science Flat Earth Society idiocy and their predisposition for conspiracy theory and pseudo-science BS! But most appalling of all is when elected officials like Michele Bachmann or Allen West or John Bolton are permitted to run around spewing their ignorance.

Akins is a berserk ignoramus as are most Republicans but the people who bankroll both major parties don't care about women's issues or abortion (one way or the other) or any of these kinds of things.

They only care about one thing, money, and getting as much of it as they can at the expense of everyone else.

On issues like how much of the national wealth go to which groups of people, legal immunity for their many frauds and crashing the economy in 2008, etc., both the Democrats and Republicans are pretty much the same and differ only in their choice of tactics to reach the same goal: More money for the rich, more power for Wall Street and corporations.

Both parties have signed onto a "deficit reduction package" that will cut trillions from Government spending which will increase the wealth of the already filthy rich and devastate the standard of living of generations of Americans.

Neither party will go after the bankers for their well documented swindling and fraud which caused world wide recession/depression.

Both parties are committed to lowering the standard of living of the so-called 99%. They are doing this by letting corporations use the high unemployment to drive down wages and benefits.

Both Parties want the turn the U.S. into a low wage export platform, sort of a Banana Republic, the way the U.S. was before the two progressive eras (1890's - 1920 and 1933 - mid 1970's) gave the U.S. a world class infrastructure and large prosperous middle class we used to be famous for.

This is not to say there is no hope. There are plenty of groups working to stop this decline, you just have to find and support them.

@imnotlost: You're seriously bringing up Bill Ayers? That non-issue was put to rest years ago. There was found to be no close relationship between Ayers and Obama. And as for Van Jones - they fired him, didn't they? That would seem to suggest that he and Obama have different belief systems. Ryan and Akin, on the other hand, co-sponsored a bill trying to re-define rape. That would seem to imply that they do, in fact, share similar belief systems and that they DID work closely together. There's a world of difference between Obama's non-relationships with Bill Ayers and Van Jones, and the relationship between Ryan and Akin.

            C. SmithRestored

He may well be a complete jerk who's only in it for the money".

Thank you for so eloquently and thoughroughly describing the ignorant, backwoods, 1950's, "if a women is raped she's a slut and its her fault," religious psychopathic mentality of much of todays republican party.

couldnt have done a better job myself!

Always a good thing when one of the theocrat GOP misogynists in Congress slips up and actually says what the entire party believes. That he proudly stated this on Fox and on Arkansas Gov./Rev. Heffalump Huckabee's weird show ought not surprise, either. ;-)

Still, do not expect House 'pub Akin to resign or the voters of Missouri to necessarily turn him out in November, or that Missouri voters will send him packing in his bid to move from the Houser and into the Senate. His opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill, is one of the primary members of Congress pushing for Wall St. and banking reforms.

In medieval England, a pregnancy following 'alleged' rape was often used by the culprit [defendant] as evidence that intercourse was consensual. Fortunately, society has moved on over the last six hundred years. That Todd Akin has not done so is evidence that irrespective of political stripe he is unworthy of any political office. We ridicule the Taliban for their medieval beliefs, yet we have our own dreadfully ignorant and bigoted folks running for public office. Does anyone need a mind as refined as Akin's in Congress?

It's time for the Republican party as a whole to do the 'right' thing.

Wow it seems if Akin's senate campaign has become a bit of an unwanted pregnancy that the GOP would not prefer to bring to full term.

Todd Adkin's (GOP's Nominee for the MO, Senate seat) remark has regressed all the way back to the "Dark Ages of Feudalism". Once a candidate opens his big mouth with a dark ages, male chauvinistic comment, then the non-apology means nothing other than what it was originally intended. Vote to keep this schmuck of a male chauvinistic pig out of the Senate. We don't need any more of the "imbecilic, big mouth, drug addicted" comments like Rush's in the House or the Senate.

He's trying to backtrack with his big mouth to save his election. He is just another Republican thinking about himself and not about the Constituents to begin with.

Akin apologized for his "ill conceived remark" only because Republicans are calling for him to withdraw from the Senate race. And if anyone believes this man is an idiot with his impulsive and ridiculous beliefs, just imagine.....PAUL RYAN thought so much of him that he co-sponsored a bill in which "rape" is defined. Now doesn't that scare the hxll out of you.....if Romney wins, Paul (teaparty lack of sense) Ryan would be a heartbeat away from being president......that should! Any woman who would vote for any Republican candidate in November has no self-esteem or common sense. The Republican party has waged a sadistic war on women in this country regarding rights. They have made no excuse for it...it has been blatant, and I remember when women could not even wear pants in the work place....I'm of a generation of baby boomer women who fought the glass ceiling secured by men for years. All I hear is that the Republican party wants to "move us forward" REALLY??? Sounds like the Republican party wants to move millionaires forward and women back to the 1950's. No thanks guys....and not a one of you will get my vote in November just because of the lack of respect candidate after candidate from the Republican party has shown when speaking about women. Even when Romney slows his speech down when addressing women...he shows exactly where he believes they should be. But we are not all as privileged as his wife with nanny's and housekeepers, and drivers. That woman has never washed a kitchen floor or make school lunches, or given up breakfast to make sure she got her kids to school on time (oh...forgot, they had private teachers for home-schooling). I'm waiting for American women to get good and mad at these jack-asses and take a stand and come November....every Republican on the ballot needs to loose.

                  Ursala,

Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn called on Akin to "carefully consider what is best for him, his family, the Republican Party, and the values that he cares about ..."

                  to which you replied

...but not necessarily in that order!

                  Very good observation.

Notice that "values" comes last in the list. so that's probably what Cronyn meant. But certainly "Republican party" should be first from any other Republican's point of view.

And certainly, for Republicans, self would come before family. So as representative of Republican thought, it was not too far off: should have been party, self, family, values (when speaking of another Republican, not speaking of one's self)

The comment was idiotic and uninformed at best. In fact, I'd like to know what other classifications rape can take beside "legitimate".

However, Clinton - the diety of the dumb a$$ demos - seduced a 21-year-old girl in the white house and the media and his constituents blamed her and forgave him all over the place including when he denied having sex with her even though the DNA was on the dress. No, it wasn't "legitimate" rape, but a 50 year old leader of the free world up against a 21 year old girl is hardly fair. Blaming her was beyond the pale.

So, all you left wing nut jobs that think socialism works, despite seeing socialist European Union falling apart as we speak, shut up about "all the republicans". Quit generalizing. Say something provable for a change.

What an ignorant comment to make, and it shows that he has no scientific or medical understanding of the female body. incest - noun

                  1. sexual intercourse between closely related persons.
                  2. the crime of sexual intercourse, cohabitation, or marriage between persons within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity wherein marriage is legally forbidden.

                  Statutory rape

The criminal offense of statutory rape is committed when an adult sexually penetrates a person who, under the law, is incapable of consenting to sex. Minors and physically and mentally incapacitated persons are deemed incapable of consenting to sex under rape statutes in all states. These persons are considered deserving of special protection because they are especially vulnerable due to their youth or condition.

Most legislatures include statutory rape provisions in statutes that punish a number of different types of sexual assault. Statutory rape is different from other types of rape in that force and lack of consent are not necessary for conviction. A defendant may be convicted of statutory rape even if the complainant explicitly consented to the sexual contact and no force was used by the actor. By contrast, other rape generally occurs when a person overcomes another person by force and without the person's consent.

The actor's age is an important factor in statutory rape where the offense is based on the victim's age. Furthermore, a defendant may not argue that he was mistaken as to the minor's age or incapacity. Most rape statutes specify that a rape occurs when the complainant is under a certain age and the perpetrator is over a certain age. In Minnesota, for example, criminal sexual conduct in the first degree is defined as sexual contact with a person under thirteen years of age by a person who is more than thirty-six months older than the victim. The offense also is committed if the complainant is between thirteen and sixteen years old and the actor is more than forty-eight months older than the complainant (Minn. Stat. Ann. § 609.342 [West 1996]).

                  Rape:noun

                  1. the unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse.
                  2. any act of sexual intercourse that is forced upon a person.

Yes, differentiating betwee forcible rape and incest or statutory rape does make a difference.

In the town I grew up there was a family, the parents were first cousins, they had several children, all of which were mentally handicapped. This is an instance of incest that has nothing to do with forcible rape.

Guys like this have effed up this country, serving their Donor constituents by sacrificing everyday people and passing laws that strip you of rights, benefits, and the money you've worked hard for all your life. That anyone could think that the female body has some kind of pregnancy-resistant apparatus that prevents conception when "legitimately" raped has to be the most asinine thing uttered since the Enlightenment. I'd urge the voters of MO to give this guy an IQ test.

the republicans are like big bullys, they will slap someone in the face and then think that by saying i'm sorry that should end it. they, the bullys, and other burecratic idiots need to take a look at themselves and look at the average joe and say what can we do to help the working man and their families, after all we would not have what we have if not for the working man. instead they are looking at these men and women and say i sure would hate to have to do what they do and laugh. just continued statements like this from akin, shows the working class people, they are not really in touch with us. yes akin and ryan sponsored a bill to define rape. wht is next take away overtime pay. i live in the area where a 56,000 sq. ft. mosque is being built. we were not given sufficient notice to express our concerns about this. we have had this shoved down our throats, don't get me wrong, i believe in freedom of religion, but this is supposed to be a democratic nation. sure when i was a boy i was taught that being in this great u s a that democracy would always prevail. now we are really starting to see and feel how this feels. just like prime minister krushev said in the early 60's that the rest of the world would not have to do anything to destroy the u s a, that the u s a would destroy themselves from within. we cannot make a statement about any minority because they, our government, has determined that this is a hate crime. the majority doesn't rule in america anymore, we the working people of this land are hated, we are expected to pay tax rates that exceed a lot more that what any politician pays. these taxes are used to keep the world up, not just our country. the working force of this country works now approximately five months a year to do this. why the hell would i want my tax dollars to go to a country that hates this country. billions and billions of our tax dollars are spent this way. wake up america before its to late. now there are two classes of people in america, they are the rich and the poor. now i don't believe in taking from the rich and giving to the poor. i, as an american, believe that these rich bastards should pay their part. they have shipped our jobs to other countrys to keep from pay wages that it takes to live in america. rommney and his type want to be the big man, let them and all politians realize, that until they have true compassion and understanding of the american people that they really don't deserve this respect from the american people. i have always been one to believe that the only way you can lead the people of this great country is to lead by example. so now let them pay 30%-40% percent of what they make, and not use every damn thing that is illeagal, to adjust their income. 13% is all that rommney pays. the american people that are on poverty pays more than that. come on mr. rommney, lead by example, pay your fair taxes so that i won't have to pay for you.

Liberals and Democrats find Clinton's behavior here to be immoral and unethical, and downright stupid. But IT IS NOT ILLEGAL. It is not assault. It is not rape.

Good read and a couple of videos. Claire got the guy she wanted and is trying to keep it that way. She hit him about it at the start, but came off of it quick. It kind of looked like she was trying to keep him in the race. Both of the other people running were beating her in the polls by a larger margin at the time of the primaries and Akin was a surprise win in the state. Claire should hope there's not a change tomorrow as he can bow out of the race and one of the other parties running prior to the primary can run in the race.

How bad is the Ryan-Akin anti-abortion bill?

                    By Greg Sargent

The national battle over Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape" has shed light on a "personhood" bill, co-sponsored by Akin and Paul Ryan, called the Sanctity of Life Act. Much of the chatter today has focused on whether Ryan opposes abortion in cases of rape. The Romney campaign confirmed today that Ryan does personally oppose it, while clarifying that a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose it.

(Wow! A complete Flip-Flop in the same sentence! The last one above. That's gotta be a new Romney Flip-Flop Speed Record!)

This is PROOF POSITIVE that The GOP Mullahs are trying to IMPOSE a form of pseudo-Christian Sharia Law on all of America. Think about that. That is what The GOP gang is really up to.

BTW, That bill would be HR 212

Well, obviously suggesting that rape can ever be 'legitimate' is wrong. I do believe we should think the best and not the worst about people though, so I really do think it had to be miss-spoken words and not what he really meant. I think he was trying to formulate his thoughts and to make his point in the discussion, and he used the words ''legitimate'' and ''rape'' together in a obviously awful way that he didn't intend. I don't mean to be sticking up for him, but I really, really don't think he really intended to suggest that rape could be 'legitimate'.

Todd, Akin's slip of the tongue helped to highlight the FACT that:

                      • The GOP Mullahs are trying to IMPOSE a form of pseudo-Christian Sharia Law on all of America, with bills like HR 212, Trans-Vaginal Ultrasounds, etc... Think about that. That is what The GOP gang is really up to.

Can you believe the Republicans chose Akins to be their man in the House of Representatives, to make SCIENCE POLICY for the rest of the nation?

Remember this? Back in 2011, Akins is the same guy that supported the Religious Right's "Let the Women Die" Law, in the House.

House Passes ‘Let Women Die’ Bill After Extremely Depressing Debate

As predicted, the US House of Representatives has passed HR 358, otherwise known as the "Protect Life Act," otherwise known as the bill that would allow hospitals to let women to die rather than perform a life-saving abortion. Every single Republican in the House supported the measure...

A$$holes like Akin and Ryan are the reason why I believe self-defense training should be mandatory in our school systems, beginning at age 7. As long as the Republicans keep sending pieces of $h!t like this to Washington, women will have an urgent need to know how to defend themselves.

I'm a firm believer in the concept that if a woman knows how to fight on the ground, especially defending from her back, her chances of fending off a rape attempt, and not seeing it escalate to a murder attempt, greatly increase. Everyone, male or female, should know the basics of wrestling and grappling, and know them well; it will go a long way toward saving your life. Women, from a practicality standpoint, have a higher need to be well-versed in jiu-jitsu than men because they stand a greater liklihood of being in a situation where they will need to use a jiu-jitsu technique to defend themselves, and that situation is sexual assault.

If a rapist is stupid enough to attack a woman from behind standing up, he deserves to eat an elbow and be on his back with his pecker pointing to the sky; just be sure to finish him, i.e. kill, as soon as possible then get the hell out of there. More realistically, a woman will find herself in bottom position if she is being assaulted. YOU WANT TO BE ON YOUR BACK, NOT FACE DOWN, BECAUSE FACE DOWN IS GAME OVER; NOT ONLY WILL YOU BE RAPED FOR CERTAIN, BUT YOU COULD BE CHOKED TO DEATH BECAUSE THAT RAPIST CAN NOW TAKE YOUR BACK! From your back, you can pull guard and crush the rapists's rib cage with your legs. More important, you can shrimp your hips out to one side then swing the top leg over his head; JUST MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE WRIST. Armbars are the great equalizer when the attacker is larger than the victim, which is why women have a more pressing need to know how to execute them. It only takes five to eight pounds of pressure per square inch to blow an elbow to bits. It's not tap or snap here, only snap and finish.

It was much like Joe "Biteme" Biden's remark "they're gonna put ya'all back in chains". Quit grasping at desperate straws and move on!

                        Worth reading:

How bad is the Ryan-Akin anti-abortion bill?
                        By

The national battle over Todd Akin’s comments about “legitimate rape” has shed light on a “personhood” bill, co-sponsored by Akin and Paul Ryan, called the Sanctity of Life Act. The Romney campaign confirmed today that Ryan does personally oppose it, while clarifying that a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose it.

But what about the other legal implications of the bill Ryan and Akin co-sponsored? In an interview just now, Dem Rep. Louise Slaughter, one of the leading pro-choice voices in Congress, raised two startling possibilities.

“One of the questions around this legislation is, Could a rapist who impregnated a victim sue that victim if she decided not to carry that baby and to have an abortion?” Slaughter said. “Another question: Could in vitro fertilization be outlawed?”

It’s unclear how this legislation would work. The bill affirms that from the moment of fertilization onward, “every human being shall have all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood.” It then says that Congress and the states have the “authority” to protect all human beings — again, defined as human life from fertilization onward — residing in their juristictions.

Slaughter’s suggestion is that this affirms the authority of Congress or the states to pass laws outlawing IVF, since that procedure requires the destruction of embryos, or that it could give legal weight to a rapist’s insistence that his victim not abort her baby — though again, it’s unclear how this would work.

“What it says is that a single cell can achieve all the protections the Constitution of the United States bestows on persons,” Slaughter said of the bill. “Scientifically the law is crazy.”

Akin is not a complete idiot, he has been bought by the Democrats to throw Republicans under the bus with fodder for the make believe war on women.

I love how die hard republicans make up nonsense like this. Between sticking their feet in their mouths and spouting idiotic comments like the above, one gets the impression that Alzheimer's is spreading in the GOP. Poor Rick - your post gives the rest of us the impression that you're an idiot. Please say it isn't so. You were kidding when posted that comment, right?

In a nutshell, this is how I see it: The demographics of the U.S. are changing, meaning that those who have traditionally been considered minorities will, in the not so distant future, become the majority of the American population. Some of our older white men, especially conservatives, refuse to read the writing on the wall and are desperately grasping at straws to hold on to their wealth and power. In their effort to ignore demographic reality and its impact on the future social and economic health of our country, they are attempting to disenfranchise women and minorities. They are opposing any program that benefits the middle and lower classes: education, healthcare, opportunity. They are effectively writing the death warrant of our democracy.

How do we cope with these old white men, these dinosaurs? WE GO VOTE! Apathy is the real enemy here, not conservatism. WE THE PEOPLE are the ones with the power to save our country. If we refuse to take the reins of our own power, WE are the ones responsible for the downfall of this great nation. It's slow suicide, folks. Wake up to the conservative agenda and its impact on our future!

                          VOTE!!!

since the tea party BIGOTS have tried to pass 900 anti-women bills in the last four years, i dont think its out of line that the democrats should put forth a bill that says:

and force every last one of them to show their true colors and vote for just what they think is legitimate or not.

Why would he be getting fewer of the military votes than normal with everything he has done for them and all the support programs he has started or strengthened?

Given that Ryan co-sponsored legislation redefining rape with Akin, this is front and center news.

technorati.com: Mitt Romney Scores Big With Blue Collar Backbone In Ohio

Last week, soon after his announcement of embracing Congressman (WI) Paul Ryan as his running mate, Mitt Romney scheduled a meeting with coal miners in eastern Ohio. The photo at the top of this posting was one of the main photos of the event ... all pretty standard stuff with the Republican nominee for president 2012 shaking hands with workers. What wasn't broadcast broadly was this photo posted by a conservative blog that showed the anticipation and participation from these unionized workers, many of whom generally vote Democrat in support of their union labor vocations.

And then you got the Obama Admin suing Ohio for allowing the Military voters a few more days to get thier votes in. Obama is really doing a lot for them, as long as they can't vote against him

That still doesn't give Ryan and Akin the right to redefine what rape is and then decide whether or not the man can be prosecuted for it.

Prove your case on the Ohio military voting … I live there and am very familiar with it.
The lawsuit asks to expand early voting for everyone on the last 3 days. There was nothing in the lawsuit that asked military to not be allowed to vote during that period.

That case has been heard and Ohio voters are awaiting the court's decision. The only clue we have from the justice is when the argument turned to the active duty military still being permitted to vote on those 3 days and the judge stepped in saying that this is not about who can vote but who cannot vote.

Obama has injured the coal industry and it's workers? How about the FACT that natural gas due to fracking is in huge oversupply and cheaper than dirt let alone way cheaper than coal. BTW way way way cleaner than coal. Jeez I sure hope Obama hasn't lost the 8 track industry and it's employees votes too! Natural gas keeps my electric bill down. Natural gas keeps my air more breathable. Maybe the coal industry and it's workers should help the "impoverished" power companies by lowering their price and subsidize the power companies so they can install scrubbers and make coal cleaner. Those 100 wind turbines 75 miles from my home are even cheaper, cleaner and the farmers in the area get a cut of the dough. Keeping my food cheaper.

“What it really is” to many Republicans is simply an attempt to help President Barack Obama win re-election.

“I guess I really actually feel we shouldn’t contort the voting process to accommodate the urban — read African-American — voter-turnout machine,” said Doug Preisse, chairman of the county Republican Party and elections board member who voted against weekend hours, in an email to The Dispatch. “Let’s be fair and reasonable.”

Sonmanvb, That is a lie spun by the teabaggers and fox and you know it. If you read the lawsuit you would see that in the language the administration has praise for those in uniform and their rights to vote. The lawsuit is about Ohio extending voting time to current military service people (not past war vets) and for residents in red districts while reducing the early voting time in blue districts and siting the cause for the reductions being a budgeting issue... The lawsuit is about fairness of all people's voting rights in that state and the lawsuit make no mention of the administration wanting to reduce early voting for ANYONE! Shame on you for peddling your empty and unproven to be false talking point without doing your own research. You are a perfect constituent for the GOP, angry that a black man is POTUS and to stupid to know that your being fed is given to you so that you vote against your best interest what ever they may be!

Steve - go away. No one is talking about murdering an unborn CHILD! Abortion is not murdering a child - it is terminating a fetus prior to it's becoming a child. But, of course, you're a good little Republican. Women are never capable of making choices about their own bodies. You need to do that for us!

The question of the morality of aborting a pregnancy is one best left between a woman and her own beliefs.

The Government needs to stay the hell out of it!!!

                                  To Steve,

And the MURDER of an UNBORN CHILD is 100% OK in the mind of the left.

So you would be okay if your daugther were impregnanted by a rapist. You would then welcome the child into your family and love it with no qualms?

Okay then - to all men thinking about rape, you can rape the daughters, wives and republican women all you want and impregnant them. They will carry your baby to term and love it as it is one of their own.

So how do you want it, Steve?

Do you want a country full of babies who were conceived by rape? Do you want a country full of kids whose own mothers cannot look at them without feeling the pain and horror of their conception? Do you want a country full of kids whose adoptive parents have to wait until they're adults to tell them their birth mothers were raped, and then hope counselling will help them overcome that?

Do you want your daughter, your mother, your sister, your wife, your aunt, your cousin and your friend to be raped and forced to bear a child? That's what Paul Ryan believes in.

I don't want to live in a country like that. Thank your god that abortion is legal in the U.S.A.

such as saying the Repulcan party wants to "unchain Wall Street?"That's exactly what Romney says he wants to do!

Last night, I watched a story on 60 Minutes on the Lehman bankruptcy and how they moved 50 billion back and forth between the US and the UK to hide their shenanigans. Who paid the price for their duplicity? We paid the price - hence, deregulating Wall Street would put us back in chains - Joe is RIGHT

See Steve that's where you job the Shark - by calling it Murder you try to guilt people into seeing your view. If the baby was born and then killed yes - that would be murder. But if a fertilized eggs is prevented from attaching to the womb or removed if needed to save the life of the mother then in my opinion and a lot of others no not Murder.

Let Women decide what is best for their bodies - let them have the "Freedom" to choose.

I watched that too, and what's shocking is that the SEC does not have the means or ability to catch these things. It's billion dollar companies against government SEC employees. They hire the best accountants and pay them best salaries to make their balance sheets look good. Now let's imagine that we take away the little regulation we have against these greedy bastards.

Steve: Until you, or ANY man for that matter, can have a baby, please shut the heck up. You have NOTHING to say about this subject. The matter of abortion is between a woman, her doctor, and, if around, her husband. It has NOTHING to do with the Senate. I get SO sick of hearing all you men proselytizing about a woman's right to decide what to do with HER body! It's none of your darn business unless you're married to the woman; then you only have a part in the decision.

I'd be interested in hearing how many of you men would make your wife deliver a baby that was conceived from a rape....how quickly would you jump on the abortion bandwagon then?? Love to hear comments on that one!!

Steve when Joe Biden insults every woman and young girl in this nation as well as the really good men of this world who know there is no such thing as legitimate rape we can compare his statements to those of Akin. Financially putting us in chains is real and those of us who work for a living realize the actual possibility when employers don't have to follow safety rules and don't pay us what they should. While not making enough money can be difficulty it is not in the same category as rape. I know a person who is the product of a man raping his mother - and she did absolutely nothing wrong regarding the situation, he is a fine young man, his mother however never recovered and his grandparents had to raise him.

Strangely enough, the GOP is stuck on stupid, alienating the largest group in the nation 51% women.

Any real man that has love for the women in his life would take a serious look at what the GOP is trying to do. I will NOT except legislation that will make my daughter, my wife, my sister, my mother, my friends into second class citizens. This bullsh* has to be stopped. Vote any republican that voted for the Akin/ryan plan out of office. They are already working in defranchising people from their right to VOTE. If you keep electing Republicans, pretty soon women WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO VOTE!!!!

I don't know if you saw the story that was on the news over the weekend. A 16 year old girl in the Dominican Republic as diagnosed with leukemia--at the same time she found out she was 9 weeks pregnant. Because they have a very strict no-abortion policy there--they define life as beginning at the moment of conception--the doctors refused to give her chemotherapy for the leukemia because it would kill the baby. Late last week she went into early labor due to complications from the untreated leukemia, miscarried, then went into cardiac arrest also because of leukemia complications, and died.

                                    What would you have done?

If that single-celled microbe can perform the functions of life on its own-react to the environment, maintain its own existence by consuming food and expelling waste, and reproduce, it is life and it is alive.

An egg in a woman's body is a cell. It is life, but it is not 'alive' in the sense that it cannot react to its own environment, cannot maintain its own existence by consuming and expelling, and cannot reproduce. It is life, but it is not alive. We women flush one or more of these out once a month when the Little Red Friend comes knocking, and there is no outrage over this because it is not alive.

An egg in a woman's body that has joined with a male sex cell is a zygote. It too, would be life, but is not alive. There are times a zygote fails to implant and is flushed out of the body with the uterine lining during the menstrual cycle. there is no outrage over this either because it is not 'alive', even though it has the potential to be. In order for it to become alive it will need to implant to the lining of a uterus which will nourish it for the next 9 months, and at this stage it is a fetus.

Now, somewhere in the middle of that, at about 20 weeks it becomes capable of being alive even if it has been separated from the uterus that nourished it. It might need mechanical help to do so, but it is alive; it reacts to its environment, it consumes and expels waste, and its reproductive organs are formed. While it may need time to mature, it is life and it is 'alive'.

Markus...I don't deliver babies. I said I was a nurse, not a physician, and I am retired. Yes, you must have been getting tiny watermelons. Ok, so, let's say a cantelope...How's that? I assure you it would be very painful to eject a melon from your...well...maybe not yours....Still, it isn't a picnic. Most women are in labor for over twelve hours for their first baby. The uterus is made of a very strong muscle that contracts with a great deal of strength...and it hurts...a lot. It was well worth it in my case, but, I still remember it as an difficult experience.

Well Amanda can't speak for the Dominican Republic; however, I think in any case you can manage the exception. What I have a problem with is abortion as birth control. Obama gave you free birth control so unwanted pregnancies should not be an issue unless in the case of rape or incest. In that case, responsible people would agree that abortion may be a responsible option.

Steve from #4.3... please jump of a bridge. How can you reward a rapist with a lifelong wound? A child is a gift. You said so yourself. Dont give that gift to a rapist. You are a monster for wishing to reward a rapist. Good heavens, save us from monsters like you!

Steve: Until you, or ANY man for that matter, can have a baby, please shut the heck up. You have NOTHING to say about this subject.

Didi, that is a very true statement. I don't know if you're aware of the fact that one of America's founding fathers agrees with you.

The first person in US history to write an op-ed piece on abortion was Benjamin Franklin, nearly 50 years before the Declaration of Independence. According to Franklin, an abortion was every woman's right and should remain her secret. If any man dared so much as utter the word "abortion", Franklin said women who encounter that man in public should "run the risk" of grabbing him by his beard and "dashing him to the ground".

Your opinion puts you in great company. And just for the record, I am a man and I totally agree with you. I've been saying it for years.

You want government out of "American's private lives" but you want them to tell women what to do with their own bodies. I, as a woman and a catholic could not imagine a circumstance in my younger life where I would have had an abortion. But that being said....I have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO TELL ANOTHER WOMAN she can or cannot. It is her body, her choice....There are over 1.4 Million abortions performed in the U.S. each year and 83% of them are performed prior to the 7th week gestation period of the fetus. Scientifically....a 7 week old fetus has not developed sensory nerves or a thalamus brain yet, is a cluster of translucent cells that between 7 and 8 weeks takes on an anphibian appearance and is 1/2 inch long and the size of a blueberry.

Now. you may want to refer to this as "murder of an unborn child". But that argument scientifically is not correct. And morally or religiously it is a decision that the woman must make with her own set of circumstances and accept the consequences for herself. I believe for a woman to make a choice of abortion must be probably one of the most difficult decisions she will ever make in her life. But it is her decision, not mine, not yours, and not the governments. According to Cigna, an estimated 43% of all women will have at least one abortion by the age of 45. It is a woman's choice issue....she chooses. she has to live with the moral and ethical and grief for the rest of her life. That choice does not belong in the hands of the government with Republican men.

I don't, in cases when the child will be born with an incurable disease and live a couple years on life support in agony and die before their third birthday, I'm all for the mother's right to decide she does not want her child to live like that.

Or when low income parents already have a child born with an incurable disease/birth defect that reduces the quality of life considerably and is expensive to care for, and they take precautions but the condom tears/whatever, and they find out the second child will be born with the same defect, the mother has a right to decide she cannot support a second similarly handicapped child and the right to decide she does not want welfare to have to pay for care for this handicapped child either.

Ex-mayor Giulani excoriated Joe Biden for what he said about "unshackling" Wall Street on Face the Nation. He said that it was an insult to blacks in this country. Well I'm white but I feel offended when Rudy tries to pin that on Biden - how can he sit there and knowingly lie on national TV, and then laugh about it? He didn't look too outraged to me. The guy is actually a lawyer so he has to be smarter than that. I'll bet that since Rudy isn't running for anything in November, the Republicans asked him to be the sacrificial pig to further their lie by having it come from a supposedly intelligent Republican. My question for Rudy is "If Joe Biden is such an idiot (Rudy's word - not mine) for saying what he did, what does that make Aken?" I'm waiting for your response, Rudy. Rudy?

Some obscure Republican congressman, who no one has ever heard of, makes an unacceptable and ignorant remark (which Romney condemns, and the RNC punishes by cutting off funding to his campaign) and the media spends days trying to lump this guy together with Romney and Ryan.

But Joe Biden makes the most insidious remarks trying to use the race card to frighten people into voting Obama (since he certainly can't run on his record on the economy), and the media quickly dismissed it as a non-issue, and went back to attacking Republicans. Romney will put "ya'll back in chains", Biden? Really?!

Do you notice the difference? Biden isn't some congressman that Romney and Obama have never even heard of. Biden is on the Democratic ticket. He is the vice president. But his remarks are ignored because the liberals in the media support anything they think will save Obama's campaign! No matter how damaging to the country.

FYI, Duqu, there are legitimate (that word again!) reasons to 'lump this guy' together with Romney and Ryan.

Paul Ryan and Todd Akin co-sponsored a bill in congress that would have changed the definition of rape.

The national battle over Todd Akin’s comments about “legitimate rape” has shed light on a “personhood” bill, co-sponsored by Akin and Paul Ryan, called the Sanctity of Life Act.

                                      http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/how-bad-is-the-ryan-akin-anti-abortion-bill/2012/08/20/c7e37e04-eafe-11e1-9ddc-340d5efb1e9c_blog.html

Women across America are outraged at the reproductive ignorance of Todd Akin, but Akin is not 'fringe' in his views compared to others in his party. Little by little, states have usurped the rights of women over their own bodies. That is the GOP party platform.

Romney has said (on video) that he would have voted in favor of the personhood law that was proposed in Mississippi. Fortunately, the voters of that state were less conservative than our 'severely conservative' Mittster, and that proposal was voted down.

There are larger issues at hand than the reproductive ignorance of Todd Akin. His attitude towards women is mainstream in his party. We need women's healthcare to stay in the hands of women and their doctors, without the interference of the state.

Funny...I always thought Republicans believed in small government and individual rights.

Why is it that these bible slapping teabaggers all look like someone that normal people wouldn't leave alone with their child? Why does Ryan's wife look so abused and down-trodden? (look at her the next time a camera catches her without her knowing - there is some serious pain in those eyes).

There is a reason why they look creepy...they ARE creepy. Behind every wild-eyed Bachmann, there's a child molester.

Nice to know though that not all Republican's are this wacked out.

Now if we can just get them all to disown Grover Norquist and his pledge (and yes, that includes the few Democrats who took the pledge, too).

Women's health rights are in danger once any Republican gets into office. Women voters - Mutt and Ryan are very scary. But I think you already know that by now. Unless you are under a rock.

They all are actually whacked out, but they are careful to distance themselves when one of them slips and reveals their empty headed positions.

Actually, 'throw them to the wolves' is more like it. They all know that women are just to be used and tossed away, even the teatard women willingly embrace this role. It is God's will!

When one of them is legitimately raped, it is a different story, but that's her problem. She was probably asking for it.

Honestly the GOP would have an easier time trying with somebody else. The Democratic candidate only has to air the "legitimate rape" soundbite and the female voters will be appalled (for those that aren't already). This one comment can (and probably will) cost him the election.

@Dave...The old English definition has changed. It also includes those that do not have the capacity to consent--like children and those that are mentally challenged. It also includes age that differs by State. Some people will willingly go along with the rapist for many reasons, but they are not capable of consenting. Just a FYI....

This is the kind of remorse he is expressing. Meanwhile, Wrongme has taken several steps back, trying to get away from the mess. Pointing, he says, "That is wrong, and I don't have any association with him, unlike your next President of the United States Paul Ryan, who has co-sponsored a bill reflecting these same, Neanderthal beliefs."

Joe Biden used the same term "chains" that Santorum used, though Joe's was taken out of context. However, you goosestepping pukes were all in with Santorum's use of the term.

I enjoyed Joe's comment after the hyped up, made up, faux rage about his use of the term "chains". Joe Biden said "they want me to apologize for saying what I meant".

All that hormone injected,Monsanto genetically engineered mystery meat, toxin-filled fries and fructose-laden soft drinks, have polluted their conservative minds.

Are any of you old enough to remember the movie "Johnny Belinda" where a young woman who is deemed to be defective is raped and has a child

1948 Movie - Dam Hollywood has been so ahead of our social issues

This whole discourse has reminded me of that movie - Jane Wyman who was too good to be Sir Ronnie's wife stars in it

She won the Academy Award 1948 and we're still discussing rape - for shame America - by the way her juices didn't shut down - she had a baby

This has prompted me to buy that movie

If Akin steps down for this, so should Ryan. They believe the exact same things. Ryan has just thus far not said anything quite as ignorant in trying to justify his position.

Akin is being admonished by some Republicans because he let the truth out during the campaign season. He's supposed to make up funny numbers that sound brilliant to really dumb people and then, only AFTER being elected, institute social policy that would even make a nazi blush.

Do not think for a second that Paul Ryan is any different than Akin or Santorum. The fact that Romney would put a freak so close to the Presidency should scare the crap out of every freedom loving American.

Just image what a speech Barack Obama would make if he decided to be honest and tell the truth about his transforming America? Here is one below:

My fellow Americans. In this election cycle we have a clear choice offered by the campaigns of Mitt Romney and myself. My opponents would like you to believe that you do not need a strong, federal government assisting you in your daily lives. But that is just false. Our government is made up of some of the finest minds in the land, so who better than they to guide you and make decisions on your behalf for your own good? Some will say that we have too many laws already on the books. That our tax codes and federal regulations are so complicated that they make all of you criminals, or that complying with these codes and laws cost businesses and consumers substantial sums of money. Money that could be better spent creating jobs.

Well, my answer to these arguments is that they are just flat-out wrong! The codes, regulations and laws in place are there to enforce social justice. To bring fairness to an unfair system. Millions of Americans suffer in poverty and a lack of opportunity, while a very few, the top One Percent, reap all of the benefits of out society. Even though the wealthiest of our country pay the majority of taxes (top 20% pay 67%), that is not enough! They need to pay more!

There is only one guaranteed way to level the playing field and that is to make everyone equally poor. This has been my objective all along and I am happy to say that so far, my plan is working. Thanks to my agenda and policies, more Americans than ever before are poor or below the poverty line. But don′t worry, because they are being taken cared of by our government. In my first term in office, I have nearly doubled the number of people receiving food stamps and we have also seen dramatic increases in those receiving other forms of government assistance. This is my ′bottom-up′ strategy, get everyone on the bottom and then raise the whole with government action.

So while we have made great strides the past four years, there is still much more work to be done. That is why I need another four more years to complete my task. I know that my opponents will say that my policies have caused the federal budget to explode to unsustainable levels. But, hey, its not my fault! Nor is it my fault that we have not had a working, annual budget all these years. The US Senate has not passed a budget in over 1200 days, so don′t blame me! My opponents will also argue that our National Debt is part of the reason why our economy is stagnating as it requires so much capital to service the debt, leaving less available for job creation or developing new technologies. Don′t worry about that, because we here in Washington are better equipped to determine which companies and industries should be invested in.

Some have charged that I am anti-business, or anti-Wall Street. This, again, is completely false! Under my administration, Wall Street is doing just fine. After all, we decided not to prosecute Goldman Sachs for anything they may have done back in 2008. Heck, we′re not even going to pursue my good friend, Jon Corzine, for losing $1.6 billion dollars of his investors′ monies. So one could say that my administration has been very good for Wall Street. Sure, you might think that all that money the Federal Reserve is pumping into the system is necessarily increasing the prices of food, energy and the overall cost of living. But that is not a problem as we can always increase the amount of assistance offered by the federal government.

So in conclusion, I ask that you, the voter, give me another four years to continue my plans for redistributing the wealth and assets of the nation in a socially just manner. With your help, we can force the rich to pay their fair share. With you vote this November, we can have a larger government more capable of guiding and controlling your daily lives to ensure that you are behaving responsibly. Its not that we cannot trust you to make decisions on your own but we here in Washington are just better equipped to decide for you in such a way that lowers the standards and makes the field more equal to all. I′m Barack Obama, and I am telling you the truth!″

Sure some republicans have stepped up and called Akin out on his comments but IMHO they've only done so for damage control purposes. What Akin said is what they think, it is more representative of their views on women than anyone wants to admit. Be careful what you wish for, tea party - it will come back to bite you.

Then why did all of the Republicans in the House vote for the Ryan/Akin bill that eliminated Federal abortion funding for Rape victims unless it was a "forcible" rape?

Is there a difference between "forcible" and "legitimate"?

Todd Akin, the Republican Senate nominee in Missouri, made an inarticulate and rather dumb statement about rape and abortion on television in Missouri. He subsequently clarified his remarks. Congressman Akin, like many devout Christians, does not believe in a rape exception for abortion.

Naturally, the very same left that gave Joe Biden a pass on his “put y’all back in chains” comment is horrid by Todd Akin’s remarks.

Todd Akin was inarticulate. Some are now accusing him of being pro-rape. The people horrid by Todd Akin’s remarks are, I’m sure, thrilled to have a President who defended infanticide. I’ll take Todd Akin’s inarticulate remarks over an infanticide supporter any day of the week.

And no, this is not hyperbole. President Obama was the only member of the Illinois State Senate to speak in favor of the position that a child who survives an abortion and fully exits the womb can still be killed by the abortionist.

sonmanvb - you seem to be contradicting yourself. There is no way a 3 month old fetus can survive, if he voted against the late term abortion bill then good - I'm right there with him, you see, a lot of serious defects are not detected at the early ultrasound and no woman in her right mind would want to go through a late term abortion as it is much like that of giving birth - no picnic, few survive - not because they are aborted but because of the defects which would make it nearly impossible for them to be carried to term and born. I have worked with a lot of doctors, I have seen the product of a 27 week pregnancy - it is not always so cute, it costs a medical fortune (healthcare anyone?), and the strain on families is overwhelming. Akin may have been inarticulate but his views are very primitive and harmful to a woman's health. You have no idea how a woman feels after she gives birth, until you do please bow out of this converstation. I have two healthy grown children, never had an abortion (thankfully never needed to have one), childbirth for most of us is no picnic - it is not for sissy's or men!

Son, here is Biden's full statement from the speech: "(Mitt) Romney wants to let -- he said in the first hundred days, he's going to let the big banks once again write their own rules. 'Unchain Wall Street.' They're going to put y'all back in chains." He is refering to Romney/Ryan's mantra of "unchaining wall street" and was warning that their philosophy would be putting Main Street "back in chains". However, if you insist on racist slants take a good hard look at the policies supported by the GOP. Never have I seen such barely veiled racism and sexism. Inarticulate? Defining rape as anything other than "legitimate" shows a complete lack of compassion for victims of rape. Republicans only care about a fetus until it is born, after that they are on their own. Especially if they are poor or minorities. You want to show America how pro life you are , take care of those LIVING IN POVERTY instead of putting the boot on their necks.

When he attempted to correct his comments to something less offensive he did so as damage control. Not that he had horrible thoughts. But that he "misspoke". They truly believe we are stupid and they can say anything, and then issue a clarification saying they "misspoke".

It is so hypocritical of any Republican to ask this man to step aside for his comment. They think it's the comment he made but they are all against abortion and always vote pro-life. Romney isn't defending Akin but his running mate, Ryan, thinks that life begins at conception regardless of whether the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest. He doesn't even believe in abortion to save the life of a mother. They're all crazy in their logic and any woman who is a Republican who is outraged by Atkin's comment and still votes Republican has no business saying anything. If you want to stand up for women you can't vote Republican!

If that was the case anyway, would a woman who miscarries be guilty of involuntary manslaughter? Or would a pregnancy that is fatal to the mother mean the fetus is guilty of manslaughter? Would love to see you Republican morons writing legislation on THAT one.

If the biology student/teacher is a right winger/pro lifer then yes, they would subscribe to this notion; I think it's reasonable to assume you do too. But what does that have to do with Akin's ignorant based comments? Legitimate rape. Indeed.

You are not doing yourself or your cause any favors by posting your ignorance for all to see.

Akin's comments were wrong and he should step down. That said, the decision to end a pregnancy from rape or incest should not be automatic. There is the weighing of: carrying the baby to term and having the pregnancy remind the victim of the crime versus the victim feeling guilty over ending the life of the unborn child.

A woman recently wrote Delilah the radio hostess who plays love songs. The women's counselor was insistent that she get an abortion. The woman did not want to even consider that option and would have been riddled by guilt if she had done so. She decided to go to term and then place the child up for adoption.

This was the right decision for her. While the option of abortion should be available under these circumstances. Mental health professionals should not consider this the only option for those they counsel. The victim should be the one to make the difficult decision.

Regarding the 98% or more of abortions that do not involve rape, incest and life-threatening or serious health conditions, women should be allowed to know about the guilt associated with this choice. A young woman I know had an abortion, a few months later the father was drown in a surfing accident. She went through an emotional ringer about how this guy she had loved (and never gotten over) had died and she had killed his baby.

The notion of organizations like planned parenthood thinking that abortion solves everything is wrong. Of course the idea that there is never a reason to perform an abortion is also wrong. Any possible benefit to the mother must be weighed against the psychological effects of the procedure.

Akin was wrong in what he said; however, planned parenthood and other organizations that promote abortion without a thought for the consequences are also in the wrong.

                                                        Bruce,

Planned parenthood does not believe that abortion solves everything. They provide information and they provide services.

                                                        Period, end of story.

Though your story was nice, and loving, and all boo hooey. It contains your personal bias and fraudulent statement that Planned Parenthood thinks that abortion solves all problems. Totally false statement.

Because he and Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan co-sponsored a bill that isn't that far from Akin's sick, twisted comments. Akin's comments crystallize what the far right actually thinks and brings to the forefront how flippin' whacko these people are. A vote for Romney/Ryan is a vote for this type of thinking.

It is kind of funny to watch the Republicans back track today.....they are a party without a soul.

President Obama was the only member of the Illinois State Senate to speak in favor of the position that a child who survives an abortion and fully exits the womb can still be killed by the abortionist.

                                                          con,

Not that this matters to you....but we're not all idiots here. We recognize that in order to pass legislation, it must pass both houses of congress including the executive branch. The GOP made it clear they were not going to help the President.....perfect example is the killing of 3 jobs bills over the last 6 months that would've created over 3 million jobs (according to the CBO).

The GOP supposedly worries about "debt"....but are willing to sign onto even more tax cuts at the expense of the debt.

The GOP is a party without a soul and without a plan.

Now that you know everything you're typing is bull ****....try addressing the topic that the articles is written about.

Popular vote means nothing. It is ALL about the electoral college. Currently Obama 237 Romney 191.

Put Wisconsin, NH, and Nevada in Obama column and he has 257, he is leading by over 3%, which is the margin of error in the polls. That leave, VA, NC, FL, OH, IA, CO. Obama needs 1 of the 1st 4 or both IA and CO together to win. In other words, everything has to go into Romney's favor and Akin opening his mouth and sticking his dick into it, does not help.

Paul Ryan co-sponsored an ammendment to the Constitution that is called "Personhood"which means that someone is a person RIGHT AFTER CONCEPTION. Also, he is opposing many birth control issues, and he is, according to his own words- The "champion" of "pro-life", defunding Planned Parenthood, and throwing in JAIL any doctor that performs an abortion, EVEN WHEN THE WOMAN WAS RAPED.

He has been VERY QUIET SINCE THE NEWS BROKE. he does not have anything ot say, because he agrees with Atkin ON ALL THESE ISSUES.

yosolo, just what does Mr. Weiner have to do with this? Are you trying to justify Akins' stupidity by Weiner's indiscretion? Typical Republican deflection move - well, Clinton did that awful thing in the Oval Office, and, and Tony Weiner, well, he posted those pictures!

Sorry but I have to disagree with your claim that Akins' views don't represent that of the Republican Party. He made his comments on a Fox News affliate station, and he was trying to justify his stance on abortion. He spoke out of ignorance just like so many other GOP members.

Your a stooge Akin needs to step down, I will not vote for him but I sure I'm not voting for Claire. Your out of line most conservatives want him to quit, you don't want obama to quit and he stands for many immoral things, ponder that thought, stop being the hater!

                                                              clb-462357

The rest of this comment is from me.

Thanks for an intelligent and informed comment. Which I've noticed are extremely few and far between.

Now Akins comment was extremely unforgivable. As for Ryan having cosponsored a bill on abortion, for those of you that did not comprehend what the bill means. The translation into simple english is:

If a woman is raped or a minor or needs it because having the baby will possibly kill her she can have one.

Personally I myself agree with that for myself, however I also believe that everyone has a right to their own choice on the matter and think the government has no business telling a woman what she should do with her body. In the end she will be the one having to deal with the end result of her decision. No matter if she is right or wrong, she will have to be the one with the consequences.

                                                                #25.35 - Thu Aug 23, 2012 6:59 AM EDT
