Updated 10:53 a.m. - Mitt Romney called a Missouri Republican's comments this weekend about rape "inexcusable," calling on Rep. Todd Akin to "correct" his remarks.
"Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney told the conservative National Review Online. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee joined a growing chorus of Republicans in condemning Akin's comments Sunday that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy for victims.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., joins Morning Joe to discuss Rep. Todd Akin's, R-Mo., statement that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.
"I have an entirely different view," Romney told NRO of Akin's remarks. “What he said is entirely without merit and he should correct it."
Akin's comments threaten to shake up his effort to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill this fall. That race is a key stepping stone in Republicans' effort to achieve the net gain of four seats they need to retake control of the Senate.
The controversy has already sparked national reverberations, however. Romney has lagged versus Obama with women voters, according to polls; his comments this morning follow on a spokeswoman's comments on Sunday quickly distancing Romney and presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan from Akin. (Ryan, Democrats note, did co-sponsor with Akin a bill that would have redefined rape under portions of law.)

Other Republicans have similarly denounced Akin.
Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) called on Akin to resign his Senate nomination.
"While Congressman Akin may have addressed his statement, like many men and women I strongly disapprove of his original comments — and the sentiments behind them," said former Virginia Sen. George Allen (R), who's trying to reclaim his old seat this fall.
In a statement and a Tweet, conservative congressman Todd Akin says he "misspoke" during a local TV interview in which he made comments about "legitimate rape" and abortion.

That was a stunnng display of simple-minded ignorance by Rep. Akins. And he has the nerve to believe that he is the one to tell others how to live. This is one of the big problems with today's Republik Party. Social issues are the achilles heel of das Republik Party.

Rep. Akin has violated the basic tenant of Team Romney, "Never provide any information or opinion that is not absolutely necessary. It will open you up to scrutiny or criticism." What most people don't realize is that Romney never released his 2011 tax return. What was published was an "In Process Return," an accountant's dream. (Honestly, look it up!) He's said that he is waiting for all the information to be sent to him (huh?!) to complete the return. He said he doesn't want to release his other returns because they will only be used as "ammunition" by the democrats.

A political maxim holds that you can’t beat Somebody with Nobody. It largely explains why Mitt Romney was having trouble going head-to-head against President Obama.
The incumbent is a much more skillful and confident campaigner, and polls show many Americans like him, despite being unhappy with his policies and the country’s direction. Obama is definitely a Somebody and that’s an advantage.
Romney, wooden and rich, was a fat target for the White House’s vicious personal attacks. Despite the president’s economic record, Romney was proving to be a Nobody among many voters, including independents and even some Republicans. He was on a path to defeat.
But a major transformation is happening before our eyes. Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate is reframing the race and setting new terms of engagement.
Suddenly, instead of Somebody vs. Nobody, the campaign is becoming Something vs. Nothing. Because of Ryan’s substantive agenda and ability to articulate it, the GOP ticket is now the Something running against the Democrats’ Nothing.
Part of that dynamic is Ryan’s age, which, at 42, is making Republicans the party of change and the future. Meanwhile, Dems, with their burdens of incumbency and the decision to stick with failed, unpopular policies, are becoming the party of the status quo. The Obama-Biden bumper sticker says “Forward,” but their fixation on Romney’s taxes and his long-ago business career seem small and dated.
Biden especially, having morphed from gregarious and seasoned into demented and dangerous, is a vivid symbol of the tattered brand. The fact that the White House must keep insisting he remains on the ticket reflects a team on defense.
This remarkable development crystallized in just a week. The race now feels more like 2010, when the Tea Party swept out a generation of Marxist/Progressive/libral/Racist/KKK Democrats, than it does 2008, when Dems won everything.

when people go to vote this election time they are going to think about the condition the country has been in since he took over the office,he cannot blame it all on the last person who was in office,he has made a lot of mistakes such as obamacare ,where most states that had it on its ballot voted it down and he is still trying to enforce it.Another problem is no one is doing anything about the border states and the illegals coming across,and unless you live in a border state like California,Arizona,New Mexico,Texas,etc... you have no idea what it is like.Has he accomplished anything he promised to do when he got elected,no.We still have a poor economy,high unemployment,the housing situation,etc... So in my case,I am a registered Democrat and come election time,I will be voting for Romney,there is no way he can screw up the country anymore than it is already screwed up (I didn't vote for Obama the first time either,I voted for Hillary,she would have been a better choice but the Democratic party was afraid of her ~imagine that,being afraid of a woman !

Romney may be out doing damage control and calling Akin's words "insulting and inexcuseable," but he and Ryan still agree with Akin sentiments, if not the exact wording, as proven by their campaign platform, voting history, and stance on the issues.

Funny I don't recall seeing any story on NBCNEWS about Biden's "Put y'all in chains" comment. Yet there a 3 stories about this idiot. WHY IS THAT?? The VP makes a racial remark and it is not reported. Why hasn't the Obama Campaign or Obama himself say that Biden made an inappropriate remark? Romney condemns this guy's remark.

I remember Biden saying this during the 2008 Primary.
"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden said. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."
The Obama Campaign and the Press jumped all over that comment as being racist. Since when is calling someone who is Black "articulate and bright and clean" A racial remark? But telling an audience with a lot of Blacks in it,"Put y'all back into chains" is just a metaphor? WHAT THE HELL!!!
Biden's remark was racial and he was right...and that story was all over NBC just like it was everywhere else.

To be fair, it is true that in most cases of rape, pregnancy does not occur. This is the same as any type of sexual intercourse. However, the term 'legitimate' rape implies that these women did what? Fought back harder? Said no more? I've no idea what a non-legitimate rape would be.

why do men make sarcastic comments when they really have no idea what it's like to be in that position ? I really wish all men could live life as a female for 1 month so they could see what our bodies go through every month. we get all the "fun" stuff like periods and menopause and the symptoms that go with it,trips to the gynecologists for annual check-ups,and the really "Fun" one ~~~ mammograms !!! gee,wouldn't they enjoy going through that.Rape and abortions and for those that are necessary,try putting yourselves in our shoes for once,these are things that affect the whole family and it is serious,please think before you write asinine replies,because those decisions are probably the hardest that a woman would have to make in their lifetime.
Akin said it exactly how he feels, the scarier part is that this is how many of the Hard Core Far Right Wing feels. He can apologize and try and explain it away but he said what he meant and how he believes so no back peddle allowed Akin!
