Romney: Akin's rape comments 'insulting, inexcusable'

 

Updated 10:53 a.m. - Mitt Romney called a Missouri Republican's comments this weekend about rape "inexcusable," calling on Rep. Todd Akin to "correct" his remarks.

"Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney told the conservative National Review Online. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee joined a growing chorus of Republicans in condemning Akin's comments Sunday that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy for victims.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., joins Morning Joe to discuss Rep. Todd Akin's, R-Mo., statement that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.

"I have an entirely different view," Romney told NRO of Akin's remarks. “What he said is entirely without merit and he should correct it."

Akin's comments threaten to shake up his effort to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill this fall. That race is a key stepping stone in Republicans' effort to achieve the net gain of four seats they need to retake control of the Senate.

The controversy has already sparked national reverberations, however. Romney has lagged versus Obama with women voters, according to polls; his comments this morning follow on a spokeswoman's comments on Sunday quickly distancing Romney and presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan from Akin. (Ryan, Democrats note, did co-sponsor with Akin a bill that would have redefined rape under portions of law.)

Other Republicans have similarly denounced Akin.

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) called on Akin to resign his Senate nomination.

"While Congressman Akin may have addressed his statement, like many men and women I strongly disapprove of his original comments — and the sentiments behind them," said former Virginia Sen. George Allen (R), who's trying to reclaim his old seat this fall.

In a statement and a Tweet, conservative congressman Todd Akin says he "misspoke" during a local TV interview in which he made comments about "legitimate rape" and abortion.

Really? When can we expect Mittens to "correct" his campaign ads? Oh, that's right he didn't run those, they were paid for by SuperPAcs that he doesn't coordinate with (wink, wink).

Mitt Romney says he will "get rid of" Planned Parenthood. Paul Ryan co-sponsors legislation that narrows the definition of rape - and he wouldn't make exceptions for rape, incest or Mother's health.

Ryan will have a hard time since he co-sponsored a bill with Akin defining "forceable rape" that would prevent abortions in cases of incest, and often times even in situation where adults groom children into having sex consensually.

The SS Akins was official cast adrift by the GOTP Express, which than turned about and put a torpedo below the Akin's water line.

On a brighter note for the GOTP, Akins self inflicted wounds are easy to triage and they can use their campaign dollars elsewhere.

Looks like Claire McCaskill will be serving six more years. Thank you, Mr. Akins! Appreciate it!

Layton - you're right about Huntsman but I can't really consider him a Republican. He flies in the face of what has now become the sick norm for the GOP.

It is sad he doesn't represent the party but it has been so taken over by the far right radicals he just doesn't fit anymore. I think he is felling that. It would not surprise me if he jumps ship in the near future. I just don't see him fitting in. He has morals, ethics, etc. He's just NOT a good Republican - in the eyes of the current party.

And let's cut the deficit, by massively increasing spending on defense. Such new and brilliant ideas there. As several posters have pointed out, Paul Ryan and Todd Akin co-wrote a bill that re-defined rape, and that would have eliminated Federal funding for abortions except in the case of "forcible rape".

An excerpt from the article mentioned above:

Federal law prevents federal Medicaid funds and similar programs from paying for abortions. Yet the law also contains an exception for women who are raped. The bill Akin and Ryan cosponsored would have narrowed this exception, providing that only pregnancies arising from “forcible rape” may be terminated. Because the primary target of Akin and Ryan’s effort are Medicaid recipients — patients who are unlikely to be able to afford an abortion absent Medicaid funding — the likely impact of this bill would have been forcing many rape survivors to carry their rapist’s baby to term. Michelle Goldberg explains who Akin and Ryan would likely target:

Under H.R. 3, only victims of “forcible rape” would qualify for federally funded abortions. Victims of statutory rape—say, a 13-year-old girl impregnated by a 30-year-old man—would be on their own. So would victims of incest if they’re over 18. And while “forcible rape” isn’t defined in the criminal code, the addition of the adjective seems certain to exclude acts of rape that don’t involve overt violence—say, cases where a woman is drugged or has a limited mental capacity. “It’s basically putting more restrictions on what was defined historically as rape,” says Keenan.

Although a version of this bill passed the GOP-controlled House, the “forcible rape” language was eventually removed due to widespread public outcry. Paul Ryan, however, believes that the “forcible rape” language does not actually go far enough to force women to carry their rapist’s baby. Ryan believes that abortion should be illegal in all cases except for “cases in which a doctor deems an abortion necessary to save the mother’s life.” So rape survivors are out of luck.

Romney's first statement on the topic didn't really clear anything up:

“Gov. Romney and Cong. Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin’s statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape.”

I'm confused - would they not oppose abortion in instances of "forced rape", "legitimate rape" or rape altogether?

I think Paul Ryan still needs to answer a few questions as to why he feels it is necessary to classify different "levels" of rape.

This isn't the first time Akin has expressed fringe views about rape in the context of the abortion debate. Planned Parenthood flatly denied having a plan to open up such a loophole.

Romney did the right thing to call out Akin, but wrong to say he should "correct" the comments. Romney should have simply told Akin "You blew it."

Ryan on the other hand, this would make for an interesting debate question considering Ryan's views supposedly align closely with Akin.

For those that need a refresher in English:

A methapor is literary device to illustrate a point. No one is literally going to put anyone in chains, same way no one is actually "tied to their mortgage". But rape is a reality. We aren't talking about the casual use of the word, like "being raped at the auto mechanic" for the bill for brakes, or "you just got raped" in an online game like Halo. This is something that is a reality. Rape is violent, and is a violation of one of the key tenets of the Tea Party movement, self sovereignty.

If you don't like abortion, fine. Don't have one. Isn't the invisible hand of the free-market supposed to guide all government decisions?

When setting back and watching the two main party's during this past several years one thing stands out. Most of the time when a Republican says or does something wrong the party admonishes that person in public and in the Democratic party they rally around them give excuses and spin it. Both party's have many people who say and do different things incorrectly and it doesn't reflect on the entire party or at least it shouldn't as they are one person but how a party handles it does reflect on that party. Now both have at times disavowed and supported individuals so my statement is looking at the majority of the time............just an opinion.

Tax returns for a presidential candidate are significantly different than college transcripts and birth certificates. You are using a fallacy of false analogy here in attempting to make your point.

Tax returns help to explain why Mr. Romney wants to further decrease the tax rate he pays in order to keep more capital gains for himself and his friends. The fact that Mr. Romney decided to not release any more to "you people" told me everything i needed to know about this used car salesman. i don't need to hear any more about it, and the vast majority seem to agree.

Displacement is what you are doing when claiming that President Obama is pushing the 'small minded' issues in this campaign. The republicans/tea party have been clamoring for transcripts and birth certificates, and they are the ones who are running ads with outright fabrications in order to persuade voters against the President. When i've looked at transcripts of speeches or listened to the President on the campaign trail, he's not talking about small minded issues. He's going back to the plan he outlined back in 2008. some of the things on that agenda are done, but he states that there is still work left to do. He's pushing for a vision of america that keeps her values and traditions in place, but moves us forward into the 21st century.

The Romney Ryan vision of america wants to return to the fabled greatness of the 1920s, with the wild west legal system and lassiez-faire capitalism that caused the great depression. They want to return to the days where women were second class citizens, and had little to no control over their lives. They have gone away from the constitutional freedom from religion by attempting to legislate christian sharia law through anti abortion and the silliness of outlawing contraception through legislation. They do all these things and still claim to know the founding fathers' intent better than us, even though the constitution was designed to be changed because they knew that things wouldn't always stay as they were.

Conservatism is rooted in the past. It is against change for any reason and is designed to maintain the status quo. The status quo as a result of conservative thought dominating our political institutions for the past 32 years has led to a point where the status quo is untenable. The false dichotomy of political parties in this country has led to a point where gridlock is the most common outcome, and this is the thing that the founding fathers most wanted to avoid. Compromise is what this nation was founded on, and compromise is what made this nation the greatest country of the modern world. If we allow our elected officials to continue believing that they can push forward ideologically driven agendas and not compromise one bit on any of them, our nation will fade into obscurity like the Roman empire.

JoAnna, i don't know you personally. i have to believe that if we met face to face and discussed things we'd be able to agree on more than we disagree on because that is what i've found to be true in my interactions with people. i'm not attacking you by stating these things, just trying to point out the logical connotations of the positions you are defending. i don't agree with everything the President has done, and he's human and is entitled to his mistakes as we all are, but the overall platform and vision that he supports is light years ahead of where Mr. Romney and the Conservative policymakers want to take us. We must learn from the past so that we are not likely to repeat the same mistakes, and right now the Conservative agenda is a recipe for undoing the protections of the New Deal era that allowed this country to become the economic powerhouse of the world, and that would prevent another great depression that would cause the end of the USA as we know it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Condolleeza Rice has ever had a job that wasn't a government job or an academic job. All of which valuable experience caused her to conclude that terrorists would never actually blow themselves up in airplanes, even though suicide bombers had been blowing themselves up in the Middle East for hundreds of years, and she had been handed a memo to that effect by her own national security staff.

Her great, made-it-on-her-own mind also concluded that Benazir Bhutto ought to go home just at the moment of the very worst tribal uprisings in modern-day Pakistan, with the predictable result that Bhutto died. Do you ever wonder what Rice was thinking about there? I have a pretty good idea.

I suspect she also might have told you there wasn't even a possibility that Osama bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan. Just goes to show, doesn't it?

I'm wondering why it's white people who pretend to be so offended by Biden's comments when caucasians were never in "chains" to begin with, if that's the way those who claim to be "offended" are taking.

African Americans, on the other hand, who might be offended by any such comment seem to be taking Biden's comments to mean "chained down by debt".

Now, about Romney's AND Ryan's tax returns. As it turns out, when you study Ryan's votes he made under the Bush Administration, Ryan was spending machine!

Ryan did NOT vote against any of Bush's wasteful spending on Republican overseas, warmongering ventures, but to spend American Taxpayer monies ON the American Taxpayer is a bitter sin, if you listen to Republicans tell it.     JH - okay so you dredge up an accusation that was denied after it was made, then made again. When someone takes that route, it is difficult to know exactly what happened. Had President Clinton ever been tried for "rape" and convicted, I would find him as disgusting as any rapist.

    However, he didn't seem to have any problem getting consenting women to have sex with him so, I'm pretty unsure of the rape.

    And, since the "victim" told so many different stories, took them back, made them again, it is impossible to know the truth.

    I read the reports and I watched the TV report. I do believe the woman. Bill Clinton NEVER came out and forcefully denied the accusation. I would think that if someone made an accusation like that you would not take it lightly.

    I just don't understand the left when they attack an idiot for saying such a stupid thing and try to tie him to the entire republican party and at the same time just overlook something as serious as an evil act from one of their own.

    I remember when Patty Murray and Hillary ran Bob Packwood out of office for just talking to women about their attire and probably patting some on the behind. He was an old fart who probably treated women like that all of his life. Then they went after the Secretary of the Navy. They tried to stop him from getting his pension when he retired because of the Tailhook scandal. He wasn't even at the Tailhook partry but he must have been a republican. But where were those two when Bill was taking sexual advantage of an intern. That must have of been OK with them because they sure didn't want to run him out of office.               What Mr. Akin said was really not that offensive, but his words have led to a much more offensive reaction from others. First of all, Mr. Akin is guilty of two things in his remarks.

              He used the wrong word “legitimate” instead of “actual” which is what he obviously meant.

              Second, he is guilty of ignorance as to the ability of a woman to be able to shut off reproduction in the event of “actual” rape. OK, this is really ignorant, but the good thing about ignorance is that it can be corrected with education and I am sure he is now educated on this issue.

              Now compare this “ignorance” to the arrogance of some others.

              Take for example Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan, both of whom have stated that they believe life begins at conception. This is who they want us to beleive they are. They really want you to believe that life begins at concecption is one of their core beliefs. But is it? I wonder.

              How can you believe that life begins at conception, and not believe that the “person” must also come into existance at conception as well. This is only logical. And if you believe that the “person” comes into existance at conception, then how can you, as a would be leader on a national scale, believe it to be ok for abortion to be allowed in the special case of rape? This is a constitutional issue.

              The 14th Amednment to the Constitution, that document that all elected officials swear to uphold and follow, clearly states among other things “…nor shall any State deprive any person of
              life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

              Note: All persons are coverd. Therefore, if life begins at conception, then so must the person come into being at conception as well. This is only logical. How can you have life in human form without also having a person?

              So here it is. Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan either believe that life begins without a person, or they believe the Constitution does not apply to them. There is no other way to slice this.

              So while all the pundents are attacking Mr. Akin for word choice and ignorance (now corrected), he can not be attacked for lying about his beliefs. In fact, what he stated is clearly within the bounds of the Constitution he too has sworn to follow. When he stated that there should be punishment
              for rape but we should punish the rapist, not the fetus, he is in compliance with both the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and his beliefs as stated. My hat is off to him. Thank you Mr. Akin for clearly stating your beliefs and giving the voter the clear choice to vote or not to vote for you based on who you say you are. Thank you.

              Compare this clear logic and statement of core beliefs of Mr. Akin to those of Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan who want you to believe that in their hearts, their shared core belief is that life bgins at conceptions but the person begins at some point after that? That is ridiculous. that is ignorant. that is just plain political posturing. Or is it the case that they both belive that Life and person begins at conception but the Constitution somehow does not bind them as it does everyone else including Mr. Akin? Aborting an inncoent fetus (person) because of the crime of rape commited by someone else is just fine with them I guess, constitution be damned. That is what they have stated.

              Personally, I would prefer to have in office someone that I trust with whom I disagree, rather than someone that contorts what he states as a core belief just to get votes. Been there. Done that. That is Obama’s record. He said a lot of what he would do and then did the opposite. How am I now to
              believe Romney and Ryan are any different given the current issue and their remarks as stated loudly by them in the past few days?

              Either the 14th Amendment applies to all persons or not. Either life and person begin at conception or not. Either the constitution applies to all persons or not. If it applies to all persons, then it applies to an unborn fetus just as it applies to Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan. So if you believe that life and person begin at conception, the 14th Amendment precludes you from aborting the person (fetus) for the crimes of another. Life and person either begin at conception or not. You can't have a person without life, and you can't have life without a person. To state otherwise to get votes is to me repulsive in the least.

              Therefore the views as expressed by Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan are very worrisome to me, as both
              gentlemen call into question their understanding of the Constitution and their sincerity as to their stated beliefs. Both of these issues are to me very serious indeed.

              In the case of Mr. Romney and Mr. ryan, we are again dealing with ignorance, but on a different scale since these two gentlemen have held elected office for some time and have sworn in the past to follow the Constitution. Are we now to believe they don’t know what the constitution contains?

              What I see in this unfolding of events are more politicians trying to parse their beliefs to get elected. More of the same. I would rather have an Akin in office that speaks his beliefs even if poorly as to word choice
              (legitimate instead of actual) then have others in office that parse their beliefs into contortions just to get elected.

              Mr. Akin should and has appologized for his medical ignorance, but he does not need to appologize for being clear that he thinks the rapist should be punished, and not the fetus. However, my vote for Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan is now in question until they can satisfactorily explain how they can believe that life begins at conception but a person begins later, or how a person can begin at conception but is somehow in the eyes of Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan an exception to the words of the 14th Amendment. In the first case, they are being illogical, a bad trait for a national leader. In the second case, in my mind, they are the ones that are unfit for office becasue they seem to not care if they violate the Constitution, the founding document of our Republic.

              I think Mr. Romney and Mr. ryan need to come down off their high horses and apologize to Mr. Akin and to the people of this great country for their obvious contortions of belief or their ignorance of the Constitution. We already have a president and too many members of Congress that think they are above the law. We don't need to elect more of the same.

              It summary, it appears to me that Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan, contrary to their prior remarks, do not really believe that life begins at conception, and that my friends is a whole new ball game.

              People in glass houses should not throw bricks.

              Wow - look at all the Republicans run for the hills - yet they are going to nominate Paul Ryan next week to be their candidate for Vice President - a heart beat away from the Presidency. Rep. Ryan worked on legislation to prevent rape victims from being able to have an abortion. What happen to big government staying our of our lives??? This is another example of why people especially women need to think about who they are voting for - I have three daughters and would never impose on their freedoms and their freedom of choice. Nor would I what anyone else to treat them as second class citizens.

When George Romney was a presidential candidate the Congressional research committee stated that George was a U.S. citizen. His parents were U.S. citizens and when George was born they were at a Mormon colony in Mexico. If U.S. missionaries have a child while working in another country, is that child not a U.S. citizen ?                 Here is what every American should really be talking about and it will scare the crap out of everyone who supported or now supports Obama!!!

                1) Obama has increased our national debt by almost 6 trillion dollars in just 3 ½ short years. That is $4.24 billion per day increased debt! This is more debt than was accumulated by all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined and is destined to destroy the future of every household in America, end of story! Were this the private sector, any CEO in America would have been summarily fired for this type of “criminal handling” of American fiscal policy!

                2) Obama’s reckless spending has been so devastating that, even if clear thinking America’s could vote him out of office, it would take a permanent,
                across-the-board tax increase of 60% just to begin to balance the budget within the next 10 years.
                Think about that for a minute.

                The impact of such reckless spending has the potential to force 90% of currently working Americans into living in utter dire poverty.

                For those who think that can’t happen, think again!!!

                3)The takers have been kept fat and happy so far living off the efforts of others, borrowed money that the yet unborn will have to repay. Obama allows millions of illegal aliens to flow into our care. We then provide all their necessities of life - food, shelter, education, medical care, clothing and all you can eat taco bars in a thinly veiled effort to “buy votes” from yet another group the “Obama administration strategists” characterize as one dimensional, intellectually compromised, single issue constituencies.

                Many of the liberal posts in this chat comfirm Obama's "one dimensional, intellectually compromised, single issue constituencies" characterization!

                4) Under Obama, the S&P has already downgraded the U.S. sovereign debt rating from AAA to AA+. Should Obama be reelected, there will be yet another downgrade as early as 2013. The implications of this are major. The U.S. cannot run its day-to-day operations without borrowing money. Anything that impacts its ability to borrow money has serious consequences. China and other nations are likely to reduce or halt extending more and more loans by buying U.S. Treasury securities. Premier Wen Jiabao of China recently expressed concern that the Obama Administration is causing the U.S. to be viewed as “something of a, well, deadbeat. "We have made a huge amount of loans to the United States. Of course we are concerned about the safety of our assets!”

                Fearing the fact that Obama’s socialist deficit spending will bring about an economic
                doomsday in the US, the Chinese have now become a net-seller of Treasuries resulting in an increase of 41 basis points in 19 trading sessions. Obama has bankrupt America. So, who will buy our debt in the furture?

                5) In order to limit the likelihood of a near term a default stemming from this massive deficit spending the Fed will continue “monetizing” his debt. In effect Obama’s reckless spending forces the Fed to commit grand larceny. Rather than honestly repaying what it has borrowed, the government merely prints up extra currency and uses it to pay its loans. The debt is “monetized”…transformed into an increase in the money supply, thereby lowering the purchasing power of everybody’s savings and creating inflation. The the U.S. adjusted monetary base has been expanded by 100 billion dollars in the last 2 months alone!

                6)This is precisely why every American household is struggling to make ends meet and why Obama is in effect forcing you to take a shopping cart full of cash every time you buy groceries or buy gas. To make matters worse, his energy policy is criminal and will likely result in gas prices of over $6 per gallon in less than 3 years!

                Do your research American, we cannot withstand 4 more years of this!

                If you have a brain in your head, now is the time to use it!

                7) The Obama administration has metastasized into a pathological cancer on our society, but we can start to cut the cancer out in November!

Have a fun time trying to play Ryan as "bold" choice at the convention when he coauthored bills with Akin redefining rape. Of course the Anyone But Obama crowd will say this doesn't change anything, but it really does. The Republicans are being pulled off message by their own mistakes. It won't be a complete blowout, but when polls show 54% of the Romney vote is just because they don't like Obama, versus 27% that think he will do a better job you have to wonder how many are going to show up at the polls after things like this.

                  My question to the rest of the teaparty/GOP is do you belive the science that Akin was talking about? He thinks that a womans body can prevent her from getting pregnant if she is raped. That is unless she realy wanted it/likes it then she can get pregnant.

                  This lack of basic information about science makes it hard to have discussions on policy.

                  Akin is the best and brightest that the GOP/Teaparty has to offer and that is very sad. Akin needs to go take a biology class.
