Updated 10:53 a.m. - Mitt Romney called a Missouri Republican's comments this weekend about rape "inexcusable," calling on Rep. Todd Akin to "correct" his remarks.
"Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney told the conservative National Review Online. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee joined a growing chorus of Republicans in condemning Akin's comments Sunday that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy for victims.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., joins Morning Joe to discuss Rep. Todd Akin's, R-Mo., statement that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.
"I have an entirely different view," Romney told NRO of Akin's remarks. “What he said is entirely without merit and he should correct it."
Akin's comments threaten to shake up his effort to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill this fall. That race is a key stepping stone in Republicans' effort to achieve the net gain of four seats they need to retake control of the Senate.
The controversy has already sparked national reverberations, however. Romney has lagged versus Obama with women voters, according to polls; his comments this morning follow on a spokeswoman's comments on Sunday quickly distancing Romney and presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan from Akin. (Ryan, Democrats note, did co-sponsor with Akin a bill that would have redefined rape under portions of law.)

In a statement and a Tweet, conservative congressman Todd Akin says he "misspoke" during a local TV interview in which he made comments about "legitimate rape" and abortion.

Tying Akin's comments to Romney is like tying Reverend Wright's comments to Obama.
Romney did the right thing to call out Akin, but wrong to say he should "correct" the comments. Romney should have simply told Akin "You blew it."
Ryan on the other hand, this would make for an interesting debate question considering Ryan's views supposedly align closely with Akin.
Reverend Wright was not Obama's VP choice.

A methapor is literary device to illustrate a point. No one is literally going to put anyone in chains, same way no one is actually "tied to their mortgage". But rape is a reality. We aren't talking about the casual use of the word, like "being raped at the auto mechanic" for the bill for brakes, or "you just got raped" in an online game like Halo. This is something that is a reality. Rape is violent, and is a violation of one of the key tenets of the Tea Party movement, self sovereignty.

Tax returns for a presidential candidate are significantly different than college transcripts and birth certificates. You are using a fallacy of false analogy here in attempting to make your point.
Tax returns help to explain why Mr. Romney wants to further decrease the tax rate he pays in order to keep more capital gains for himself and his friends. The fact that Mr. Romney decided to not release any more to "you people" told me everything i needed to know about this used car salesman. i don't need to hear any more about it, and the vast majority seem to agree.
Displacement is what you are doing when claiming that President Obama is pushing the 'small minded' issues in this campaign. The republicans/tea party have been clamoring for transcripts and birth certificates, and they are the ones who are running ads with outright fabrications in order to persuade voters against the President. When i've looked at transcripts of speeches or listened to the President on the campaign trail, he's not talking about small minded issues. He's going back to the plan he outlined back in 2008. some of the things on that agenda are done, but he states that there is still work left to do. He's pushing for a vision of america that keeps her values and traditions in place, but moves us forward into the 21st century.
The Romney Ryan vision of america wants to return to the fabled greatness of the 1920s, with the wild west legal system and lassiez-faire capitalism that caused the great depression. They want to return to the days where women were second class citizens, and had little to no control over their lives. They have gone away from the constitutional freedom from religion by attempting to legislate christian sharia law through anti abortion and the silliness of outlawing contraception through legislation. They do all these things and still claim to know the founding fathers' intent better than us, even though the constitution was designed to be changed because they knew that things wouldn't always stay as they were.
Conservatism is rooted in the past. It is against change for any reason and is designed to maintain the status quo. The status quo as a result of conservative thought dominating our political institutions for the past 32 years has led to a point where the status quo is untenable. The false dichotomy of political parties in this country has led to a point where gridlock is the most common outcome, and this is the thing that the founding fathers most wanted to avoid. Compromise is what this nation was founded on, and compromise is what made this nation the greatest country of the modern world. If we allow our elected officials to continue believing that they can push forward ideologically driven agendas and not compromise one bit on any of them, our nation will fade into obscurity like the Roman empire.

Thank you for taking the time to write an informative post, for anyone interested in knowing just how serious the repugnikkkans are about turning back the clock on women's issues. Pity us if ROMNEY gets to appoint another Supreme Court justice, it will take DECADES to have a high court that is consistent with democracy. Our ONLY hope is to overturn, not Roe v Wade-- but CITIZENS UNITED. And that will never happen if the teabrained maroons keep getting the white house.
What Mr. Akin said was really not that offensive, but his words have led to a much more offensive reaction from others. First of all, Mr. Akin is guilty of two things in his remarks.
He used the wrong word “legitimate” instead of “actual” which is what he obviously meant.
Second, he is guilty of ignorance as to the ability of a woman to be able to shut off reproduction in the event of “actual” rape. OK, this is really ignorant, but the good thing about ignorance is that it can be corrected with education and I am sure he is now educated on this issue.
Now compare this “ignorance” to the arrogance of some others.
Take for example Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan, both of whom have stated that they believe life begins at conception. This is who they want us to beleive they are. They really want you to believe that life begins at concecption is one of their core beliefs. But is it? I wonder.
How can you believe that life begins at conception, and not believe that the “person” must also come into existance at conception as well. This is only logical. And if you believe that the “person” comes into existance at conception, then how can you, as a would be leader on a national scale, believe it to be ok for abortion to be allowed in the special case of rape? This is a constitutional issue.
The 14th Amednment to the Constitution, that document that all elected officials swear to uphold and follow, clearly states among other things “…nor shall any State deprive any person of
life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
Note: All persons are coverd. Therefore, if life begins at conception, then so must the person come into being at conception as well. This is only logical. How can you have life in human form without also having a person?
So here it is. Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan either believe that life begins without a person, or they believe the Constitution does not apply to them. There is no other way to slice this.
So while all the pundents are attacking Mr. Akin for word choice and ignorance (now corrected), he can not be attacked for lying about his beliefs. In fact, what he stated is clearly within the bounds of the Constitution he too has sworn to follow. When he stated that there should be punishment
for rape but we should punish the rapist, not the fetus, he is in compliance with both the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and his beliefs as stated. My hat is off to him. Thank you Mr. Akin for clearly stating your beliefs and giving the voter the clear choice to vote or not to vote for you based on who you say you are. Thank you.
Compare this clear logic and statement of core beliefs of Mr. Akin to those of Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan who want you to believe that in their hearts, their shared core belief is that life bgins at conceptions but the person begins at some point after that? Or is it the case that they both belive that Life and person begins at conception but the Constitution somehow does not bind them as it does everyone else including Mr. Akin? Either the 14th Amendment applies to all persons or not. Either life and person begin at conception or not. Either the constitution applies to all persons or not. If it applies to all persons, then it applies to an unborn fetus just as it applies to Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan. So if you believe that life and person begin at conception, the 14th Amendment precludes you from aborting the person (fetus) for the crimes of another. Life and person either begin at conception or not. You can't have a person without life, and you can't have life without a person. To state otherwise to get votes is to me repulsive in the least.
Therefore the views as expressed by Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan are very worrisome to me, as both
gentlemen call into question their understanding of the Constitution and their sincerity as to their stated beliefs. Both of these issues are to me very serious indeed.
In the case of Mr. Romney and Mr. ryan, we are again dealing with ignorance, but on a different scale since these two gentlemen have held elected office for some time and have sworn in the past to follow the Constitution. Are we now to believe they don’t know what the constitution contains?
What I see in this unfolding of events are more politicians trying to parse their beliefs to get elected. More of the same. I would rather have an Akin in office that speaks his beliefs even if poorly as to word choice
(legitimate instead of actual) then have others in office that parse their beliefs into contortions just to get elected.
Mr. Akin should and has appologized for his medical ignorance, but he does not need to appologize for being clear that he thinks the rapist should be punished, and not the fetus. However, my vote for Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan is now in question until they can satisfactorily explain how they can believe that life begins at conception but a person begins later, or how a person can begin at conception but is somehow in the eyes of Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan an exception to the words of the 14th Amendment. In the first case, they are being illogical, a bad trait for a national leader. In the second case, in my mind, they are the ones that are unfit for office becasue they seem to not care if they violate the Constitution, the founding document of our Republic.
I think Mr. Romney and Mr. ryan need to come down off their high horses and apologize to Mr. Akin and to the people of this great country for their obvious contortions of belief or their ignorance of the Constitution. We already have a president and too many members of Congress that think they are above the law. We don't need to elect more of the same.
It summary, it appears to me that Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan, contrary to their prior remarks, do not really believe that life begins at conception, and that my friends is a whole new ball game.

To make matters worse, his energy policy is criminal and will likely result in gas prices of over $6 per gallon in less than 3 years!
