Paul Ryan weighs in on Middle East policy

SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- Paul Ryan ventured into the debate surrounding the Middle East on Friday afternoon for the first time since being named the presumptive GOP vice presidential nominee.

“This is the first responsibility of our federal government,” Ryan said about national security. “And one of the critical means and needs for a strong national defense is because the world needs America’s leadership.”

He continued: “In the past day, Iran’s president called our ally Israel, quote, a cancerous tumor that must be excised. Let me be really clear. Under President Romney, our adversaries will think twice about challenging America and our allies because we believe in peace through strength. There will be no daylight between America and our friends around the world. Strong national defense, peace through strength, strong relationship with our allies."

Ryan, the seven-term Wisconsin congressman who serves as the House Budget Committee chairman, has been criticized for not having enough foreign policy experience to serve on Mitt Romney's ticket because he typically works on domestic issues.

Thursday, Ryan addressed the trade policies with China.

President Barack Obama “said he’d go to the mat with China. Instead they’re treating him like a doormat.  We’re not going to let that happen,” Ryan told the crowd in North Canton, Ohio. “Mitt Romney and I are going to crack down on China cheating. We’re going to make sure that trade works for Americans.”

Friday, while speaking in the battleground state of Virginia, the Wisconsin congressman also weighed in on the pending $500 billion in defense cuts — part of what’s known as “sequestration.”

"Now there’s one thing we’re going to have to deal with to make sure we protect jobs in Virginia and around America. And that is these devastating defense cuts that president Obama is promising. That is the lack of leadership that he is providing. They call it sequester and all of that. Well I tell you what, in the House, we already passed the bill to cut spending in other areas of government to make sure that these devastating cuts to defense never occur so we don’t put Virginians out of work and so we have a strong national defense. That’s extremely important," he said.

Phine,

Exactly.

Ryan talking about China. He had a fiance meeting with Adelson last week. I am sure Seldon told Ryan how he made his money with the Chinese and the gambling empire he has in Macao. Wonder if they talked about Adelson being investigated by the DOJ, SEC, and the FBI about his dealings with foreign government officials.

President Obama has brought America back from the seriously chronic reputation created by the "Do as I say" Bush Administration.

Anyone who denies this is just trying to score points with folks who, like themselves, know nothing about foreign policy.

Yes, Romney has certainly helped China out in a lot of ways, some very likely more secretive than others. Must keep him up at night.

SHOUT OUT to JoAnne in PA for sharing this on another thread;

"LAS VEGAS — Four days after his announcement as Mitt Romney's running mate, Representative Paul D. Ryan was not in Florida talking Medicare with elderly voters or in drought-ridden Iowa talking about a farm bill. He traveled to the Venetian hotel here for a meeting hosted by Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino mogul who has pledged to spend as much as $100 million this year to defeat President Obama.

"In keeping with Mr. Adelson's penchant for staying below the radar, Romney aides refused to say who attended the meeting with Mr. Ryan, though the location (a private room at one of Mr. Adelson's hotels) and leaks from the Romney camp left little doubt. And in keeping with laws that prohibit elected officials from explicitly asking donors for super PAC money, aides to Mr. Romney insisted before the event that the meeting was not a fund-raiser.

"It's a finance event, not a fund-raiser," an aide told reporters. Asked if people were paying to attend, he repeated, "It's a finance event, not a fund-raiser."

"The issues swirling about Mr. Adelson's business practices are not new and can hardly come as a surprise to the Romney campaign. Last year, his company, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, announced that it was under investigation by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission for possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act — specifically, that it bribed Chinese officials for help in expanding its casino empire in Macau. Later, the F.B.I. became involved, and even Chinese regulators looked askance at the company's conduct, fining it $1.6 million for violating foreign exchange rules, The Times reported on Monday.'

"A careful presidential campaign would put distance between itself and a businessman like Mr. Adelson. Instead, this one is cultivating him. Mr. Romney recently met with him in Israel, and Mr. Ryan this week paid homage to him and other big donors in a private casino for high-rollers on the 36th floor of Mr. Adelson's Venetian hotel. By allowing Mr. Adelson to have such an outsize role in their race, the candidates themselves are placing a very risky bet."

So phine, what is Obama's fine foreign policy?

Anything beyond treating friends like enemies and enemies like friends?

What part of "little Paulie's" statement do you disagree with ....

“This is the first responsibility of our federal government,”

Do you disagree with the Constitution?

“And one of the critical means and needs for a strong national defense is because the world needs America’s leadership.”

Don't believe in America's leadership ... that the reason you voted for and mindlessly support someone with no leadership ability, someone who can't even lead his own party enough to garner 1 vote for one of his budgets .... a guy that is the most divisive president in Gallup history?

" ..... we believe in peace through strength."

Name a war where a weaker opponent started a war with a stronger military opponent knowing that power was stronger and had the will power to kick its ass?

Or do you think the world is a beautiful village full of good people that just don't yet understand Obama's brillance, his "unseen before in history" intelligence, insight into humanity .... and his ability to solve an issue / events that have existed for 3,000 years?

So, where has Obama's "leadership" brought the world?

http://blogs.the-american-interest.com/wrm/2012/08/16/muslim-brotherhood-clamps-down-on-dissent/

All he had to do was to release foodstuffs from our reserves- corn, soy, wheat that were destroyed before year's end- to aid the Middle East and North Africa when he was warned, in January 2010, that war and weather had created the kinds of food shortages that would bring about chaos.

He had a tee time to keep, so he just ignored the warnings. This is the result.

Think the liberals in Egypt are happy with the result of the Arab Spring? Think again- they are more miserable now than before- because they have less freedom than before.

Think the Copts- who were free to practice their religion before, but are not so free now- are happier?

Think Israel feels safer?

I knew Obama would be bad for the American economy- but even I did not know just how seriously he would screw up on foreign policy.

There, he is a bigger disaster than he has been domestically. I just pray it can be put right in my lifetime.

Or my granddaughter's.

@Joanne or Fiesty

Here is the complete article you referenced. I cannot find the above statements as part of the reference. Please explain if the reference is in error or whether you are adding your own editorial and claiming that it was part of the article.

Is this the level you have sunk to?

LAS VEGAS — Four days after his announcement as Mitt Romney’s running mate, Representative Paul D.

Mr. Adelson has already contributed more money to defeat Mr. Obama than anyone: over $50 million has gone to the 2012 campaign, including $10 million to a “super PAC” backing Mr. Romney and $10 million to Crossroads GPS, which has run millions of dollars of advertisements against Mr. Obama.

In keeping with Mr. Adelson’s penchant for staying below the radar, Romney aides refused to say who attended the meeting with Mr. Ryan, though the location (a private room at one of Mr. Adelson’s hotels) and leaks from the Romney camp left little doubt. And in keeping with laws that prohibit elected officials from explicitly asking donors for super PAC money, aides to Mr. Romney insisted before the event that the meeting was not a fund-raiser.

“It’s a finance event, not a fund-raiser,” an aide told reporters. Asked if people were paying to attend, he repeated, “It’s a finance event, not a fund-raiser.”

Monte Miller, a longtime Republican donor who planned to attend, described it as an opportunity for major contributors and influential Las Vegas Republicans to size up Mr. Ryan.

“I’ve watched Ryan for the last few years,” Mr. Miller said. “I think I know what he’s going to bring. But I haven’t been in the same room as him. I want to see his charisma and communication skills.”

The meeting, attended by several dozen guests, underlines that Mr. Ryan not only helps bring ideological ballast to the ticket but also is expected to have major appeal to donors.

The campaign said $3.5 million rolled in — from large and small donors alike — within 24 hours after Mr. Romney named him on Saturday, and Mr. Ryan’s schedule through the party convention later this month quickly filled with 10 fund-raising events, including in Denver, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Detroit.

At each stop this week during a tour of battleground states, Mr. Ryan will attend fund-raising dinners and breakfasts in addition to public rallies.

Mr. Romney’s relationship with Mr. Adelson, not always warm, has improved in recent months through private meetings between the two — and by Mr. Romney’s appearance at a fund-raiser in Jerusalem last month attended by Mr. Adelson, who holds hawkish views in support of Israel.

Mr. Ryan’s connections to Mr. Adelson are looser — the casino magnate does not appear to have donated to Mr. Ryan’s campaigns or his political action committee — and his opinions on Israel and the Middle East peace process are less well defined.

“It’s a safe bet Israel will come up,” said one Republican donor in Las Vegas who is a friend of Mr. Adelson.

But a closer connection with Mr. Adelson also holds risks for Mr. Ryan and the Republican ticket. Mr. Adelson’s casino empire, which has made him a billionaire, is the subject of a federal investigation into whether his company, Las Vegas Sands, bribed Chinese officials to help him expand into the mainland. Mr. Adelson’s company has denied any wrongdoing and has attributed the accusations to a disgruntled former executive.

At the fund-raiser Mr. Adelson attended in Jerusalem, Mr. Romney’s assertion that cultural differences explained economic disparities between Israelis and Palestinians was criticized as ethnically insensitive. Mr. Romney also declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and promised to move the United States Embassy there.

The Obama campaign seized on Mr. Ryan’s new role to motivate Democratic donors, arguing that Mr. Romney chose his running mate to persuade wavering conservatives to open their wallets.

“Here’s the calculation,” Jim Messina, Mr. Obama’s campaign manager, wrote in a fund-raising pitch this week. Mr. Ryan is on the ticket to “inspire ultraconservative ideologues and corporate interests,” he said, adding, “that means tens or even hundreds of millions more dollars for the Romney campaign and the array of outside groups supporting him.”

The money, he said, would pay for attack ads. “Those ads will have more impact on undecided voters than anything Paul Ryan himself does or says,” Mr. Messina wrote, making his own appeal for donations to take countermeasures.

Trip Gabriel reported from Las Vegas, and Nicholas Confessore from New York.

Hey newday,

About Obama's "I got bin Laden" crap, guess you haven't heard....

"Mr. President, you did not kill Osama bin Laden. America did. The work that the American military has done killed Osama bin Laden. You did not," Ben Smith, identified as a Navy SEAL, says in the film.

Seems even the toughest guys in the world, the SEALs, can no longer stomach Obama's nauseating narcissism, political exploitation and clueles, incompetent endangerment of America.

Yep ... the silent warriors are pissed about a bunch of Obama things and have formed the Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund Inc.

The group states it is not political but is simply trying to save American lives by detailing what a disaster Obama has been as Commander in Chief.

Gosh ... must be a bitch to now have to defame and marginalize the very true heroes who provided Obama his only claim to success in national security, huh?

Oh well, at least you guys have marginalized true heroes, the Swiftboat Veterans, before.

What are going to call this .... SEALing?

Hopefully we can call it SEALing the deal.

I doubt it. Who cares (watches) about Hardball anyway?

So where was he wrong, what did he lie about ... or getting covered in Matthew's spittle what you call winning a debate.

Oh well, I am looking forward to how mainstream America views it. Are you looking forward to it?

Regarding our founding moms (nice touch - I like that) and dads against the UK ...

You are too intelligent to really need me to explain the difference ... the motivational difference between a revolt / revolution and an act of aggression by one country against another.

Decent try though.

Japan?

Problem is that Japan was militarily superior to the US at the start of WW II. They had been at war, where combat experienced, they had much superior aircraft, more aircraft carriers, bigger battleships ...

Japan wasn't afraid of America, they merely wanted to swat us down to keep us out of their way until they could get what they wanted.

Yamato, the guy that planned Pearl Harbour knew he could run wild for a awhile, but also knew that in the long run, after America woke up and started building ...Japan would lose. He was afraid of our industrial potential.

His superiors didn't buy it.

Btw - Do you not how lucky we were at Midway ... the turning point of the war?

Good try ... but my point holds unless you come up with something else.

About phine ... tell her to be nice ("little Paulie") and I'll let it slide.

Tell her I hope she is doing well and hope she gets back to full heath. (I am serious)

Bob, I know the film you are referring to. It was recently put up by a group calling itself OPSEC. I saw them come on the news late one night. It made me want to check out the site. These are actual former C.I.A. guys (one even with his face in shadow) and others of the intelligence world who think Obama spilled all of the secret things they were doing. Some people got killed because he said too much. A president should know better.

I am a Democrat and find it all disturbing. It is not a partisan thing. Democrats of the past were as protective of national security issues as much as Republicans. I really wish the Democratic Party would nominate someone else at the convention, otherwise, I am stuck voting third party for president.

Bob and Empress I too have seen the OPSEC film. They are saving lives and trying to teach Americans a lesson from WWII that "Loose lips sink ships". Americans have forgotten the value of silence as to anything of an intelligence nature so real heroes are just re-educating the average American on an old lesson. In my opinion anyone with any decency and a desire to SAVE American lives should support such a worthy cause. Here is the link to these Great Heroes;

http://opsecteam.org/

If the above link does not work than put the address in your browser or use Google. It will be the first organization on the Google list.

This is a good start for these silent men. Personally I wish they would go further. According to the Homeland Security boss on an interview on the News Hour, he said that America is infiltrated by Russian and Chinese agents. It seems to me spying like charity begins at home meaning we should bring all our troops and agents home to clean house here first because what good is helping Iraq or Afghanistan if America crumbles due to espionage at home.

I am not a repub. I agree with Thomas Paine ... society is a blessing, government at its best is a necessary evil ... at its worst an intolerable one.

I planned on voting for Hillary in the last election simply because McCain was not a realistic chance and Hillary was the lesser evil of the two viable options.

Think about how you use your vote, can America afford this type of president with what we will be facing.

Bob,

That is what is weighing on me right now...how to vote. Should I actually vote for Romney to get rid of Obama? As far as national security, Romney may be better, but I am not sure by how much. I do not like his obsession with budgets (evident by his choosing Ryan). I fear he may cut Medicare and programs needed by little people and give huge tax breaks to the rich, and yet....Obama in practice has done much of the same, so I don't know if it will make much difference. Obama signed the bill for the sequestration (cuts on both programs and military), a very unDemocrat thing to do. He also gutted Medicare to form Obamacare, so as a Democrat I feel he in reality did nothing useful. perhaps it would be better to let Romney can Obamacare. A future president may do a better job of creating a national healthcare program. I'd rather wait for one that works than for one that is designed to crash and burn. If Romney gets in, the democrats have four years to get it right next time. I have considered it a possible good risk to consider Romney (and voting straight democrat for all congressional seats so Romney can't do damage).

By the way, I voted for Hillary in the primaries too.

Bob and Empress, I too am not sure how to vote. I am a FDR style Democrat which means I strongly believe in supporting the poor and building a strong infrastructure. National Security is a priority to me. I believe to be a first world country you have to have both a strong solid infrastructure and a strong National Security intelligence Community. To have these a major overhaul is needed. One must rid your house of Rats and Termites before rebuilding can start. What is Desperately needed in America is to Get Out The Foreign Spies from our soil, Pronto!!! Then when it is only us Americans left we can begin rebuilding America.

Empress, it was a slick video.

Did you notice that they did not show where President Obama congratulated the men and women of the armed forces for this action? They edited that part out.

Did you notice that the video was produced by a former Republican candidate for office and that they refused to say exactly who paid for it?

Did you notice that they made unsubstantiated allegations while "protecting the identity" of the sources and speaker?

Did you notice that the video footage of Presdient Obama supposedly spilling the beans to Hollywood about killing bin-Laden was footage from March of 2010, roughly a year BEFORE bin-Laden was killed?

Frankly, I have very little respect for the politically based antics of former service personnel that violate their military honor and diminish their personal service by deliberately making unsubstantiated allegations and agitating for other active duty military personnel to disrespect the CIC.

Mathew I do not agree with you that the video is for republicans only. I believe Intelligence Community secrets are an American issue no matter which party you are in. Obama is being criticized today. Bush was criticized by the Intelligence Community for releasing Valery Plame's name and endangering her contacts lives. Bush was suited by the CIA for that so too many Presidents have been too loose lipped when it comes to intelligence secrets. This abysmal history goes way back to JFK. Since then the Intelligence Community has had to suffer abuse unceasing until now and it continues to this day. OPSEC promises to remain as a watchdog agency to attempt to protect the Intelligence Community. If Romney gets in the White House he will have to face these guys as much as Obama if he gets a 2nd term. These guys are here to stay, I hope. This is way long overdue because The abuse of the Intelligence Community has to stop.

This is just a watchdog Agency. It is a good start. It is much less than I would do. I would choose a two fold action. One would be this and the other would be far more aggressive like what Tom suggested "Operation King David" for example... Let he who has an ear let them here. And I am not just referring to a Bible study. (Elbow anyone).

Fool's Gold and Anakin - I fully agree that leaks have occurred same as they've happened as far back as President Nixon (that's where I remember starting to pay attention).

I agree that intelligence agencies and the people associated with them need to be protected!

I do NOT agree that this "Opsec" group is a "watch dog" agency. If they were, they would not have slanted their presentation by using selective editing and false images. Their efforts were clearly to create a false and biased presentation to best support unsubstantiated allegations against the CIC. A "watch dog" agency strives for "sunshine and transparency" not undercutting and sabotage.

I never claimed this video was "for Republicans only." In fact, I think otherwise. I think this video is a slickly made, biased piece specifically designed to promote a distrust and rejection of President Obama.

I will also say that any and ALL leaks from any and ALL sources (regardless of party or position) need to be investigated, and where needed, the leak source identified and where required, prosecuted.

Mathew In my opinion OPSEC is being as transparent as they can be. All these guys are not used to dealing with the public. They lived their whole lives in secret. They told as much as they believed they could. I could easily tell that these guys had trouble trying to talk to the public at all. They are not used to the public so I think you should cut them some slack because it is their first time talking in the open. You have to try and understand the Intelligence Community is not used to dealing with the public especially the "Field Agent" Or Special Ops Units. These guys have lived in the shadows all of their lives. You just can not wave a wand and say they should do everything as the news or some other civilian organization does. Here I am not trying to fight you. I want you to try to see how these guys feel and see life. They have lived very different lives than regular citizens. I hope that I helped you see that they are not fake. These guys are more real than many. This is where it is hard to bridge the gap between civilians and the Intelligence Community. This is why they are so misunderstood. I can only assure you that they are real. I know that may seem a strange statement but it is the best I can say. I know too many who have suffered by the leaks done by the reckless. It bothers me greatly so when an organization such as this one comes along to help a long suffering problem I am more than grateful and will not look a gift horse in the mouth. So please at least give these guys a chance and see how they do. Only time will prove who is right or wrong. They did say that they will remain even after the election. If it was about electioneering they only need to be there until November.

@Anakin Skywalker

Bob and Empress I too have seen the OPSEC film. They are saving lives and trying to teach Americans a lesson from WWII that "Loose lips sink ships". Americans have forgotten the value of silence as to anything of an intelligence nature so real heroes are just re-educating the average American on an old lesson. In my opinion anyone with any decency and a desire to SAVE American lives should support such a worthy cause. Here is the link to these Great Heroes;

http://opsecteam.org/

I have heard one of the front men prattle on in a radio interview where he actually was forced to field real questions. I believe that real heroes don't mind the light of day. So why is it that the people who put up the money for this are a 504? Gutless cowards who throw rocks from the shadows. Just another cheap cowardly Swiftboat group with a purely political aim. I was really amazed at the misunderstanding of the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor.

At the time, the Japanese planes were actually superior in manuverablitly and speed compaired to our plans. What Japan was concerned about was the Aircraft Carriers and Battle Ships.

The whole point of the attack was to cripple a fighting force that was superior in numbers under the mistaken belief that we would be taken out of the war. The biggest failure they had was not sinking any Aircraft Carriers because none were in harbor that day because they returned late.

Most of the planners never had visited the United States. They did not know that we had the industrial might that could crank out more than enough war equipment to replace what they had destroyed and more than enough for 2 wars.

The point is that you only attack a superior force IF you do so by surprise and are able to make them weaker than you. Epic fail on the Japanese warlords part.

There will be no daylight between America and our friends around the world. Strong national defense, peace through strength, strong relationship with our allies."

Hey Art - Here are the copies

          Paul
Ryan who bashes Obama’s stimulus program – partook of the program

          On
October 5, 2009, he wrote a letter to Chu on behalf of the nonprofit Energy
Center of Wisconsin, which was applying for a grant under the Recovery Act’s
          Geothermal Technologies Program.

Under the grant program the center received a total of $240,000, according to
          its president, Frank Greb.

The same day Ryan sent another letter advocating for a grant application, in
which the Energy Center partnered with Milwaukee Area Technical College, for
training building technicians and operators in energy-saving techniques.

For that program, the government provided $740,364, according to federal
          records.

But the biggest payoff came for the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation.
Ryan predicted the $20 million grant would be able to “create or retain
approximately 7,600 new jobs over the three-year grant period and the
          subsequent three years.” Paul

By his YES vote, Rep Ryan is also responsible for the sequester (if it happens). All of this happened because the Republicans rejected the "grand bargain" which wol dhave also reduced the deficit by 4 trillion.

He can argue that the Ryan Budget Bill "restored defense spending" but in all honesty he KNEW it would never pass the Senate as it proposed defuding PPACA. So that is a BS position for him to take.

Adler.....Google the Levon Affair and the USS Liberty and you will see that Isreal is only about Isreal and is not a friend of the US. Also, I just watched Fox news and they were, again, all over "Obamacare" and that we cannot afford it. Well, guess what guys, if we can afford basic medical care to our citizenry, we cannot afford another war in Iran.

Granted i acknowledge your ignorance Layton but I wasn't referring to you.

The ignorant and naive believe military strength is not only not required but is actually the root of our problems here in our nation. The truth of the matter is that we enjoy our freedoms and prosperity because of our strength. Matter of fact, many nations have enjoyed a de facto peace and prosperity simply because they are aligned with us. If the America hating peaceniks don't think so then they are free to go to one of those countries which do not fully enjoy our largesse. There's a third world sh!t hole people are trying to flee everyday 90 miles south of Florida which will probably accept them.

                conservative,

I see you subscribe to the theory of the US must continue to be the policeman of world and we must be the about nation building. Sounds like a neoconservative to me.

Conservative...do you, right now, believe that we should enter into another war with Iran? My answer is "no" and I will lay out my case for you instead of making a general, unsubstantiated remark that my thinking is awry in this matter

                (1) We simply cannot afford it; our deficit is what 16 trillion and is approaching the "danger zone" as a percentage of GDP; this is according to the Ryan Path to Properity document, all 73 pages of which I read the other day

                (2) If your fear mongering argument is that Iran with a nuke is a threat to Isreal, Isreal can take care of themselves; they have proven this many times over; Iran would never be stupid enough to throw a nuke Tel Aviv's way; with their 200 plus US nukes, they would erase their country from existence

                (3) If your fear mongering argument is that Iran with a nuke is a threat to the US, with stories of rogue Iranian johnboats cruising into NY harbor (wait a minute, I had to stop finishing laughing);then shouldn't we also go to war with North Korea (I mean after all, right now, they could be assembling an armada of sailfish boats with sovet nukes in tow); also, same argument with Pakistan

                (4) That Iran is a soveriegn country, do you know what soveriern means? they have the right, just like we do and Isreal does and many other countries to build nuclear weapons; it has been proven that Achmedinijad's remarks were that the current Isreal leadership need to go

                (5) Before and during the cold war, conservatives were huge proponents that counties build nuclear weapons; mutually assured destruction; the theory here is that, with MAD, the nukes actually keep the peace; so, following this conservative theory, would not it be better for Iran to have nukes to keep Isreal in check; a good case history here is India and Pakistan, who fought wars constantly, have not fought any wars since they acquired nukes

                (6) Finally, being an avid reader (all volumes of Gibbons' Fall of Rome); I see America making the same mistakes of former world powers (Rome, Greece, Britain); they did not fall because they spent too much money taking care of their own; they all fell due to constant wars and nation-building in sovereign countries that they had absolutely no business in; please note: I also believe in a strong military, however, believe that we can still be #1 at at least 20-30% less with the military budget

Peace is not for the faint of heart. I suppose you would let Iran develop nuclear weapons, and they have missiles that can deliver them to Europe....good show all!

Everyone keeps saying the country is facing a national emergency because we have to much debt, that medicare is going broke, there are not enough jobs, not enough revenue etc. !

We have many corporations, banks, businesses, individual wealthy people, there are people running for office who spend millions of dollars trying to get elected, there are millions looking for work, millions who have lost their homes and their businesses, and they say it will take many years for the recovery to happen, This all working together constitutes a national emergency!

These problems can be solved in just a few months if the leaders would make the right decisions! If the President and the congress would declare this a national emergency, and pass a bill that would require the banks, corporations, business, insurance companies, and everyone who can pay to pay cash money on a sliding scale towards the debt, they could raise five trillion dollars, and pay it on the debt.

many corporations can easily afford to pay a billion dollars, and many could pay ten billion,, millionaires could easily pay fifty thousand dollars, and not even miss the money! There are wealthy people who could pay a million, many oil companies or even middle class workers could afford to pay five thousand dollars, the point is it would not be that hard to raise five trillion dollars to bring the debt down, and get this economy going,

There are many ways it could be done! Some might call this socialism, But what was it called when the tax payers were required to pay to bail out the banks, and the real estate, and motor companies [ Their patriotic duty? ]!

If they do this they could even use a trillion dollars to fund medicare, or the affordable health care or to stimulate business. with the jobs this would create the tax revenues would really make a difference when they started to come in, it would lift manufacturing, real estate this might not be the best way to get the country going, but something along theses lines with a little more thought as to the best way to do it could be a better way to help the recovery!

example [ one hundred million people paying fifty thousand dollars is 5 trillion dollars] why not bite the bullet, and get this nightmare over !!!

Good point dale. Who would have the guts to insist they do this? The only way I could think of is have the C.I.A. tell the rich magnates to fork it over or sleep with the fishes, all in the name of national security. They no doubt would feel this is a bit outside their mandate, but it sure would solve the debt problem.

The leviathan is the "private sector" that is gouging this nation to death. Wars for oil companies. Ridiculous insurance company overhead in health care costs. Wasteful pentagon spending. Outsourcing our jobs to China, Vietnam, and Russia. Government contractors overcharging the taxpayers in the war and in every other case. Pharmaceutical companies gouging us through the Medicare part D scam.

God save us from the "free market" and efficiency of the "private sector". But, what the heck do you expect when the only motive is profit?

What has happened is that capitalism has become God in the U.S. In the proper order of things it should be second to the nation itself and its people, that is, properly regulated.

It truly saddens me that there are so many ignorant and lazy people who don't know squat.

What happens when the motive becomes "gimme" and there is only the lazy with their hand out?

We become France and Greece. Where people are literally abandoning their children because they see them as a liability.

Empress is partially correct about capitalism becoming a god. This is not a totally new thing for we have had worshipers of the almighty dollar virtually forever. But until recently, even these who serve and worship capitalism still had a sense of loyalty to the nation. There is no loyalty today ~ for many of the often revered and exalted corporations could not be counted on to be loyal to the United States if another dollar of profit can be made through disloyalty and alliance with an adversary. Hell, it has been illegal to trade with Iran for over eight years but an American corporation just got heavily fined for doing just that. Some of our defense contractors are sub-letting production to China. China, fer chrissakes ~ because they can squeeze another dollar of profit out of such a deal. Yeah, capitalism has taken on god-like form and any who may question or challenge it is deemed a heretic.

I live a great life layton. That is why it saddens me to see my fellow Americans fall under the left leaning liberal bs. Take, for example, the statement made by "Toomany". Obviously, not too many hours weighing philosophy.

"The private sector is the leviathan"

Where does one learn such idiocy?

Let's take the obvious straight forward argument. Without the private sector there is no public sector. Where does that lead?

When you strip away the private sector you end up with tyranny. Government control of everything. Usually enforced from the barrel of the gun. Now, I don't know about the rest of you brain dead "give me mine because I can't make it" fools but I would rather be poor and free than fed and enslaved.

Always a pleasure Layton. Have a better tomorrow than you did today.

Why not do it, and get this country back on track? They could receive tax breaks for it over the next ten years; These people should want to do it to get this country back on track! We have soldiers doing a lot more than that!

United We stand wasn't that what everyone was saying after 9/11? There are fifty thousand major cities in the country, inside those cities there are millions of businesses they could pay something. It doesn't make sense to stretch this crisis out over the next twenty years while America suffers!

We can do much better, and We should! Just take Michell Jackson for an example. He could pay ten million dollars , There are many more like him that could do it to help the country to recover and they should be glad to do it!

Obama has been a disaster for American foreign policy, especially the middle east. BTW, The radicals want him re-elected. Drones or no drones, he's probably killing the wrong people We'll never know for sure.

But I digress. Here's an example of Obama's lack of understanding concerning.....well, just about everything.

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. There are very few moments in our lives where we have the privilege to witness history taking place. This is one of those moments. This is one of those times. The people of Egypt have spoken, their voices have been heard, and Egypt will never be the same.

Here's the reality. The stuff NBC doesn't bother to report.

The Arab Spring takeover of Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood has run amok, with reports from several different media agencies that the radical muslims have begun crucifying opponents of newly installed President Mohammed Morsi.

Middle East media confirm that during a recent rampage, Muslim Brotherhood operatives, "crucified those opposing Egyptian President Morsi naked on trees in front of the presidential palace while abusing others".

                      H/T

                      WND

Mubarak was bad but it appears our President and the State Dept backed the devil.

Another Obama myth exposed. Resurgence of respect in the world. Bull. Inept and worthless.

                      Romney/Ryan in a landslide.

Conservative Rebellion: The order was given because the Bush Administration did not want to be pulled into a full-scale Middle East War. It was the correct order! If Iran had been bombed, then that would not be the end of the affair. It would have been just the beginning. Two very large events would have occurred.

                        1. Most every Mid-East country would likely be pulled to the side of Iran because the hated Jews led a first strike attack on Iran. Iran has enemies among several Mid-East Muslim states, but they would have come together against Israel. The U.S. would have lost its Muslim allies at a time when we were bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan costing us four billion dollars a week as it was. Our military

                        2. We would have lost many of our European allies who would not support an Israeli first strike against Iran. Why? Iran supplies a great deal of oil to Europe and Japan, not to mention China. Remember the Bush Administration's statement "An Alliance of the Many," (NATO and other countries) against Sadam Hussein? That would have collapsed instantly.

                        3. The U.S. would have stood almost alone with Israel. Why? We would have been forced to do so because every right wing evangelical Christian would have demanded it. There would have been an outcry of support by the far right wing extremist fanatics to support Israel. The Bush Administration would have had a domestic nightmare on its hands.

                        4. That would have meant the U.S. would have had to move to a "total war," including reinstating the draft which, in turn, would have led to another anti-Vietnam situation among those people who did not want to go to war. Taxes would have had to be raised resulting another element in the American society wanting the president's head. The result would have been terrible domestic at a time when we were trying to get out of Iraq.

                        5. EVERY President of the United States of American fears a backlash from one of the most poorly educated, easily led, pathetically igonorant, groups in American society, namely, the far right wing, extremist fanatics. That's why you do not hear of presidential policies that seem to contradict far right wing extremist policies, particulalry when the president himself seems to back that pathetic element.

Dick Cheney burned Valerie Pflame Wilson, too, when he listened to the Prince of Darkness, Karl Rove who said "She is Fair Game!" That SOB exposed Wilson as a covert CIA agent which, in turn, got many covert foreign agents killed when governments hostile to the USA found out that their own nationals were American spies. That was, of course, a treasonable offense. Obama signed a bill into law early in his administration that protected Bush and Cheney or any other former American Administration from being prossecuted for actions they took when in office.

You may think that Bush never gave such an order to shoot down Israeli aircraft on a first-strike mission on Iran, but it did happen and it was made public later. It was the correct order!

The Rove-Cheney order to burn an American CIA agent was not the correct order! It was an absoutely treasonable act. Obama, however, like Gerald Ford who pardoned Nixon knew full well what the backlash would be for the American society from the far right wing extremist fanatics in the country if they were actually brought to justice, signed a bill into law that protects former administrations from persecution.

                          Blame Obama.

July was the deadliest month on record for our brave young men and women in Afghanistan because of Obama. I'm sure they would rather be sitting in a classroom or hanging in the 'hood smoking dope. Or both.

Is it any surprise that Ryan's promise to defend Israel to the last American life comes after getting basket-fulls of cash from mob-boss Adelson? Can you imagine any Republican presidential nominee of the past ever being elected if they had openly taken money from mobster Meyer Lansky? Not Likely.

It will prove that the Sheldon Adelsons of the world cannot buy a government.

New Democrat majority in the House? Ha, ha, ha... Nasty Pelosi will never be Speaker of the House again. Obama reelection... not gonna happen... think about it... all he has to offer is four more years of the same... he has no new ideas... all he can garner in the polls is 46% of registered voters... less of likely voters... Obama's going down like a Tijuana who're.

these devastating defense cuts that president Obama is promising.

Uh ~ ~ ~ as I recall, these "devastating defense cuts" were part of an agreement congress made in 2011 to raise the debt ceiling. That deal included the sequesters set for January 1, 2013. Ryan, Boehner, Cantor, and McConnell all agreed to the proposal but now Ryan wants to lay the blame at Obama's feet? Just because Ryan can't (or conveniently won't) remember, others do and this is just another case of hypocritical posturing by the Romney-Ryan team. Damn, this pair lies when the truth would serve them better.
