The Obama campaign said that Paul Ryan “flip flopped” on the issue of Medicare now that the Romney campaign is accusing President Obama of reducing Medicare spending in the same way Ryan had proposed in his budget.
On a conference call with reporters, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Ryan’s Democratic counterpart atop the House Budget Committee, noted that the president’s health care plan cut more than $700 billion mostly out of the Medicare Advantage program, which affected insurance companies and hospitals rather than beneficiaries.
But Ryan’s budget plan also calls for the same spending reductions, even though Romney is now accusing Obama of “raiding” Medicare by instituting the cuts and has said he would restore the spending.
“It’s kind of sad to see Congressman Ryan be forced to flip flop on this issue by Gov. Romney,” Van Hollen said on the call.
He claimed that while Medicare trustees have estimated the spending reductions would extend the life of the entitlement program for eight years, Romney and Ryan would essentially be negating that extension should they implement their plan.
“They will hasten the insolvency of the Medicare program by 8 years, that’s according to the Medicare trustees. So what they’re announcing is that by the end of their term if they were to be elected, Medicare would have begun to go bankrupt by the end of their term,” Van Hollen said.
Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt suggested they would continue to hit Ryan on the apparent contradiction between his budget proposal and Romney’s plan, a strategy that allows them to hit their opponent on policy while also suggesting Ryan is a flip flopper, a claim they’ve long been making about Romney.

Romney's Medicare plan is 902 words long and sketchier than Ryan's - and I would not call it "Premium" anything:
"Should Romney restore the $716 billion — and unless he institutes other yet to be specified reforms — we would move back to the old system of overpaying private insurers and providers.
He'd be re-inserting inefficiency back into the system, jeopardizing the benefits that seniors are currently enjoying, and shrinking the solvency of the Medicare trust fund from 2024 under current law to 2016.
"All of the demonstration and pilot programs aimed at payment and delivery system reform would also be eliminated," Steve Zuckerman of the Urban Institute told ThinkProgress.
"Definitely, the 8 year extension in the life of the Medicare HI trust fund would be gone."
He added, "If I could ask Romney-Ryan one question on this topic it would be: After you repeal the ACA and restore the cuts in Medicare payments, would you then reinstate the Medicare cuts as part of your own budget plan?"

Ryan said the funds would help create jobs. All the while he was asking for stimulus funds, he was attacking the program saying the stimulus did not create jobs, and lying about the request for funds. Republicans, hypocrisy is thy name!

The market is no guarantee of anything. Actually most experts agree that government-run Medicare is much less expensive than private plans. Government is there to provide services, but private providers have to make profits which translate into extra costs to consumers. And there is also the factor of an unstable market. Oh, boy, do you know we have been in a recession, the worst since the Great Depression?
So, someone never learns, I guess. I mean, of course, the GOP. And it's no conincidence that we have kept sliding into recessions.

Yeah, well when Biden was Campaigning for President in the 2008 Primary, his position was to carve up Iraq into 3 states or countries or something dumb like that, Sunni, Shia and Kurd and they could forge an agreement on how to share the money the Oil Resources brought in.....Biden had to defer to P.Obama's policies and agenda when he accepted the VP nominee offer....

The program that guts Medicare is Obama's to the tune of $716B. The effeciencies they say will result are reducing payments to doctors and hospitals via the 15 member benefits panel. This won't happen and is why the "Doc Fix" Medicare payment adjustment became necessary to offset Medicare reductions.
Four years ago Obama campaigned on the fact Medicare could go bust in as soon as 8 years - logical and accurate but his obsession with ACA put Medicare at further risk.
In FL where the Seniors are really pay attention confidence in Obama keeping Medicare solvent runs way behind Romeney/Ryan. That is one reason Rubio wasn't picked as VP... Republicans can win FL without him.

The Ryan plan will kill Medicare and put millions of American senior citizens at risk.
Not everybody is as rich as Romney (or Ryan) and they can't afford the over-priced health care in this country without some assistance. That is especially true for our seniors many of whom are forced to live on nothing but Social Security. Without Medicare they would be forced to choose between food or medication.
We are a wealthy country, we have the highest standard of living on this planet mostly because of the richest 1% of the populace. An exclusive club to which Mr. Romney is a charter member.
He needs to bring his wealth home and pay 33% in taxes just like ME. In fact he ought to pay a HIGHER tax rate so those less fortunate (not like me, I'm doing fine) can live a decent life.
13%, that's all he pays and that is criminal and he's not alone. The Kochs, the Murdochs and the Edlesons all pay less in taxes than middle-income Americans like me and you have to pay.
Thankfully R&R will not be seeing the inside of the White House except as guests and that means we're in no real danger of losing Medicare or Medicaid. Because, by nominating Ryan as his VP...

The savings achieved in Medicare through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) would help stabilize Medicare by eliminating overpayments to private insurances, hospital, and pharmaceutical that encourages greater efficiency. As a result, the law extends the life of the Medicare trust fund by eight years and allows seniors to retain all of their guaranteed Medicare benefits. Medicare beneficiaries are already paying less for prescription drug coverage--Pharmaceutical manufacturers are required to provide a 50% discount on prescriptions filled in the Medicare Part D coverage gap. Seniors have already saved $3.5 billion on prescription drug costs thanks to the Affordable Care Act provision and receiving preventive care as a result of the law, while enrollment in Medicare Advantage has increased and premiums have fallen. The law, in other words, does exactly the opposite of Republicans claim: it expands Medicare “as we know it.” ACA do not take money out of Medicare beneficiary but it stabilize the Medicare program and it adds 8 years to Medicare life, and that is the fact that Republican try to spin and lie about it. {think progress}
If Romney repeals the ACA, it would bring back the Medicare-doughnut hole and have seniors pay 50% more for their prescription drug and health prevention services. Also, Romney would eliminate 8 years Medicare life that Mr. Obama instilled it into the program.
Romney & Ryan would take $716 billion dollars out of Medicare beneficiary and convert Medicare into a voucher / coupon and have seniors pay $6400 out of pocket and receive less medical services, in order to pay for millionaires and billionaires tax cut. Therefore, Mr. Romney & Ryan Medicare plan do not control cost or extend the life of Medicare but shorter the life of Medicare “as we know it. “

Republicans want to end Medicare and Social Security, we know that plain and simple, and it's part of The Ryan Plan, and from reading Republicans' posts here, Romney/Ryan's followers want to end those programs too and they don't give a crap whose money their stealing, although Republicans do know that those programs are primarily owned by the Elderly and Senior Citizens who have already paid their hard earned money into those programs all their working lives.

I must be missing something here, but I'm pretty sure that Ryan never had a plan that reduced medicare and sent the money to Obamacare...NBC could not be more dishonest and misleading in this statement! Ok: so lets review the latest version of the Obamacare plan (which the country has been shoehorned into):
1. Cut $700 billion from Medicare, leaving less money to provide benefits, create an advisory board who will decide what benefits to provide and which benefits to deny. Lower the reimbursement rates for providers and they will likely provide less benefits. Seems to me the benefits given by the government are reduced.
2. Each person has to buy insurance. If they can't afford it, the government gives them credits - exactly like a voucher, support payment - whatever you want to call it.
3. As each person has to buy insurance, all that money goes to private insurance companies - a windfall for the insurance companies.
4. Take $700 billion out of Medicare.
5. Raise taxes for the wealthy and the middle class through taxes on medical devices, prescription drugs, higher premiums for all.
6. The Healthcare Act does nothing to address the insolvency of Medicare. Vice President Biden vowed to do nothing to change it. It will be broke in 8 years.
And the President's supporters are so anxious to criticize a plan from the other side they fail to see the glaring similarities.

One of the Medicare cuts in Obamacare is the penalty hospitals pay for re-admission rates.
Medicare already dictates how long the elderly can stay in the hospital after surgical procedures- often, too short to ensure good outcomes.
Tell me, what do you suppose will happen to an elderly bypass patient who develops pneumonia after being sent home two days after bypass surgery? Think the hospital will re-admit him or her?
Talk about coming between patient and doctor.

This is a catch and release problem or game played by hospitals. I believe under present law they are penalized for doing so or soon will and the practise will stop.

Looks like you retards never had basic economics classes, or are too old to have been offered any in school. I'm in the 1% club, one of the guys that doesn't have to do anything but collect interest on my investments for the rest of my life. While companies have stashed record amounts of cash, they won't spend it to hire people until there is demand for their products. Tax breaks for me don't give me any incentive to hire anyone else, as I already pay landscapers, lawn mowers, maids, and occasionally a catering company to throw parties at my place. I will invest my extra $ in industries and countries that have the most attractive growth potential (i.e. not America!).

We high net worth individuals do not waste money, we save it and we invest it, but we aren't charity workers. You should also consider the impact that automation and technology are having on the job market. I like my investments to earn profit, and hiring employees to do jobs robots can, especially in America, is not profitable. It will take serious government investments in critically needed infrastructure projects to build desalination plants for irrigation, to repair to highways and bridges nationwide, to build more clean energy capacity, to digitize the power grid, and I'd really like to see investment in a nationwide high speed rail system. Bullet trains are awesome, and a great way to get lunatics like GG, conservative, and Kenva out of their trailers more often. Btw, consider who gets paid for government infrastructure contracts and who those PRIVATE companies hire? AMERICANS! Invest in America, vote OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!

July 2012, more people were added to the SS Disability payroll than people who got jobs.
Since it normally takes anywhere from 18 months to 3 years to qualify for SS Disability, that makes sense.
People who had been hanging in there, doing what they can, getting the extraordinary support of their employers and coworkers found that the company they might have been with for years suddenly closed and the jobs gone to China or India or just gone. Or that companies find reasons to layoff the less productive workers, and have not hired them back and that new employers just can't afford to accommodate them.
Of that being unemployed, they finally have time to see the doctor and get the situation that's been bothering them for years investigated.
BTW: do you have any idea how little you receive on SSDI ? The amount allows people to survive, not get rich.

bcwc: I'm employed, but I know some people who had a sudden catastrophic illness destroy their kidneys, forcing them into dialysis 3 days a week for 4 hours per day. While there are a few hearty souls (VERY FEW) who can do dialysis and work, dialysis is one of the automatic reasons for SSDI.
The amount they receive for SSDI is no where near what they were earning by working.
SSDI is one of those programs the GOP wants to eliminate, along with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the EPA, Student loans, the FDA, HUD, FHA, the IRS and just about every government agency other than homeland security and the DOD.
don't forget cut's in veteran benefits as well....(so much for the Red White & Blue and thank you for serving our country).

I live in a California city that went bankrupt and is out of it now. there were two reasons. One the governator kept taking money earmarked for local programs like schools, and, two Walmart.
Walmart moved in and one shopping center went down and another was put on hold. The city spent millions trying to accommodate Walmarts plan to build a new store. Then Walmart moved out of town completely, leaving us with almost no stores. But new ones are moving in and we are getting back to normal again.
Also, down south in the desert, the farmers there found they could make more money selling their water to housing speculators than from farming the desert. So they did. When the state found out about it they cut off the water to them. So now the cities down there have empty houses and no farm income. Boohoo.
That water comes from a series of dams built back in the 1930s under the New Deal and the biggest reason California is the 8th largest economy in the world.
