Political campaign ad spending tops $500 million

Campaign spending on radio and television advertising has crossed the half-billion-dollar mark.

With the $37 million being spent this week on political advertising -- including the campaigns and the Super PACs that support them -- the grand total for this campaign is now more than $512 million, about the amount spent on advertising in the entire 2008 general election, according to an NBC News/Smart Media Group Delta analysis.

Almost half of that money is coming from outside groups, like Super PACs -- and the vast majority of the outside money is going to support presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Outside groups have spent a whopping $238 million on the 2012 general-election campaign. And about $9 out of every $10 – in total, $205 million – spent by an outside group is going to support Romney or hammer President Obama.

By contrast, outside groups supporting Obama have spent $33 million, accounting for 14 percent of the total ad spending on the incumbent president’s behalf, including efforts by Obama’s own campaign.

Put another way, just 25 percent of all the ads that are intended to benefit Romney have come from the former Massachusetts governor’s campaign; outside groups, including super PACs, have made up the difference. By contrast, 86 percent of the total advertising effort meant to boost Obama has come from the president’s own campaign.

But Obama’s campaign is still far and away the largest-single spender, checking in at $207 million.

Crossroads is the second-biggest spender at $105 million -- $59 million from Crossroads GPS, a 501(c)4, and $46 million from the Super PAC American Crossroads.

The Romney campaign comes in third at just $67 million. But with outside groups’ help, Romney and his supporters -- or Team Romney -- are outspending President Obama and his allies -- Team Obama -- $273 million to $239 million.

For the past month, Team Romney has outspent Team Obama by nearly 2-to-1. But that margin is up to 2.5-to-1 this week -- with Team Romney outspending Team Obama $25.8 million to $11.1 million.

Part of that is the Romney campaign is almost on par with the Obama campaign this week. The Romney campaign is spending $8.4 million to the Obama camp’s $9.9 million.

Previously, outside groups had to spend just to get Team Romney at the same level as Team Obama.

2012 AD SPENDING
Team Romney: $273 million
Team Obama: $239 million
Total: $512 million

OUTSIDE MONEY
Pro-Romney: $205 million (86% of all outside money going to boost Romney)

Total: $238 million (47% of all money spent on ads this general election)

% FROM OUTSIDE GROUPS
Team Romney: 75% (of Team Romney’s ads are from outside groups)
Team Obama: 14%

Or…

HOW MUCH OF THE ADS SIDING WITH ONE CANDIDATE OR THE OTHER ARE COMING FROM THE CAMPAIGNS?
Romney: 25%
Obama: 86%

AD SPENDING BY GROUP
Obama campaign $207 million
Romney campaign $67 million
Crossroads $105 million (GPS $59 million, American $46 million)
Americans for Prosperity $42 million
Restore Our Future $29 million

It bugs me when Romney snears "we'll send Obama back to Chicago." Can you imagine President Obama saying he'd send Romney back to Utah? (Or Michigan, California, New Hampshire or Massachusetts, or where ever it is Romney lives.)

I've heard Romney disparage Chicago several times now, and to me, that is hardly Presidential rhetoric. And he calls President Obama divisive?

Amy, being from Chicago, I can comment on the corruptness of my own city without coming under fire as an outsider. Chicago is the most corrupt town in the nation. Yes, Obama is from Chicago. So is Bill Ayers. So is Jeremiah Wright. So is David Axelrod. So is Rahm Emanuel. So is Blago. So are the Jacksons. So was Saul Alinsky. So are the Daley and Durbin families. Illinois' last FOUR governors are all behind bars. Does that tell you something?

@CubsFan2012 (#1.6). No. What it really means is, Willard is not capable of raising all the money he's spending on his own via the traditional, everyday citizen donation.

In turn, Obama has not had to go (as much) to SuperPACs money to support his run, due to the grass-roots efforts made by his campaign.

What's becoming very apparent now is the SCOTUS decision favored Willard amply. In other words, it enabled the war of the corporations (embodied by the SuperPACs) against the average American.

At 63 and disabled I don't get out much anymore. But today I took my little wife, also disabled, to buy a new sofa as ours has springs gone. Anyway we go to Gallery Furniture in Houston - pictures of George Bush 41& 43 all over the wall, should have walked out then, but this guy is supposed to have the best deals blah, blah.

Our credit has been challenged since we became disabled and we tried to avail ourselves of "Mattress Macks" 2nd chance financing. There is where the fix is in and another Romney example of the rich screwing the poor. They made us wait an hour to find out what they would charge us. The sofa was going to cost us DOUBLE at the end of the 23 month period. When I asked to see the interest rate, the little girl told me there is no interest rate it is just what the "charges" are. I believe Mack has found a way around the Usury law in Texas.

Much like Romney he can't show what he paid but you know your getting screwed in the end...

So we left - no sofa! Once again Conservatives trying to take advantage of the little guy.

F6Zman... Nice list too bad the VAST majority of it has been debunked.
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/o/obama-report-card.html

I will address a couple of "truths" in the list:
Yes, he was the only president that saw a cut in our credit rating but why? Is it because the 112th congress decided to sabotage the process by which the debt ceiling is raised. This in turn has cost the US MILLIONS of dollars... Thanks TEAPUBLITARDS!!!
The moratorium on drilling in gulf of mexico happened after BP, Transocean and Halliburton effed up in a MAJOR way. Their so-called spill plans were found to useful only for oil spills in bathtubs, in other words, USELESS. In addition, they ignored regulatory statutes and requirements. If you think this is a bad thing then why don't you go down to the gulf and eat all the mutated shrimp you can.

Too bad you don't know the difference between BS and truth, or, perhaps, you simply don't listen/read/watch anything that deviates from your own belief system. In other words you are a bubble boy that has no idea how to critically think or to look at things objectively. No one is buying your BS so I hope you still get paid by the Koch bros and Karl "the corrupt" Rove.

This, in a nutshell, is the predicted result of the political ideologically based (not Constitutionally based) 5 to 4 decision of the Supreme Court in the 'Citizens United' case.

As predicted we are witnessing the beginning of the end of our representative democratic republic. It's now all about the money -- secret, anonymous and completely unlimited money -- and no longer is it at all about "we the people".

Quoting Mitt Romney, "Corporations are people, my friend" (so we had ample warning to have seen this coming).

Quoting this article:

"Outside groups have spent a whopping $238 million on the 2012 general-election campaign.

By contrast, 86 percent of the total advertising effort meant to boost Obama has come from the president’s own campaign."

This is such a sad, and unnecessary end for the United States of America. The founders had such high ideals and honorable vision for our country. And for 230 years we had such potential.

How sad indeed that our representative democratic Republic is going to end as just another Banana Republic, soon to be relegated to the ash pile of history.

So, over 200+ millions are spent from outside group to help Romney. I guess more tax cut for the rich and get rid off "capital gains" which the main income for the rich must be tempting to pass by.

Not to mention Ryan's plan to use 700 billions that said to help uninsured from Obama to give more tax cut for the rich.

What a waste of money and time!?!? 3/4ths of the campaign money spent is misinformation to create confusion (and that is putting it nicely). Just think of what that kind of money could do for something worthwhile (i.e. pay down the national deficit, create new jobs, pay for college degrees without the high interests, secure our borders without the political bickering schoolyard bullies, fix the mortgage problem areas, etc. ,etc.). Middle class people can no longer run for political positions that are secured for the elite only.

@RoyWilson (#2.22) -

No. What it really means is, Willard is not capable of raising all the money he's spending on his own via the traditional, everyday citizen donation.

In turn, Obama has not had to go (as much) to SuperPACs money to support his run, due to the grass-roots efforts made by his campaign.

What's becoming very apparent now is the SCOTUS decision favored Willard amply in his run for president - "Corporations are citizens too, my friends". In other words, the SCOTUS enabled the war of the corporations (embodied by the SuperPACs) against the average American, yourself included.

Just how are they preventing people from voting? By asking for ID? Why is it only Democrats that can't figure out how to navigate the DMV to attain such an ID? Are they just that much more incompetent than Republicans?

Besides Holder and the DOJ have arleady set a precedence that it's ok to intimidate voters by standing outside polling booths with tire irons and crow bars.

@ SanAndresMan

Romney has got to spend billions to equal the "free" advertising that Obama gets from his OWNERS at GE.

GE pays zero in federal taxes and they own NBC and co-own MSNBC

Example:

Anne Romney wears a $650 shirt to an interview and this site comments that she is "out of touch and not of the people."

Michele Obama wears a $6,800 jacket and this site comments that she is a "stylish trendsetter."

No worries Obamanites the fix for 2012 is in. The issue will be that once the liberals and uninvolved Americans figure out how awful Obama is it will be too late for ALL of our children.

There are many reasons why Obama won't win re-election this November, here's one of them: Artur Davis. Don't know who he is? Click the link:

I did, and this is what I learned about Artur Davis: "The move came as Republicans announced Thursday Davis would be speaking at the Republican National Convention next month, the latest step in the reinvention of the Harvard Law grad. Four years ago, Davis was closely linking himself to the president, serving as a campaign co-chair and looking to model his own political rise after Obama’s.

But Davis was defeated in a gubernatorial primary in Alabama in 2010, losing the black vote to his white Democratic rival after African-American activists in the state split with him over his decision to oppose Obama’s health care law. He announced he would join the GOP earlier this year and is expected to run for a House seat in his newly-adopted state of Virginia."

Just the title of the link [continuing-his-reinvention] brings to mind a flip-flop.

" Earlier today, Attorney General Eric Holder addressed the NAACP Nation Convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. What did media need in order to attend? That's right, government issued photo identification (and a second form of identification too!), something both Holder and the NAACP stand firmly against when it comes to voting. It's not a matter of "intelligence" Many people do not have access to records. Not only the Republicans are requiring an ID, but they are requiring that the ID be "current".

Many people do not have transportation. You make it look as if it a very simple task, but it is not. They were showing the stats of how people that have moved around have a very difficult time getting their birth certificate, and how they need to actually paid MONEY to get all the paperwork going. Also, they have ID, but the ID is from years back, and of course, the GOP won't have it.

Simplistic minds, as usual, think of simplistic solutions.

You did not become successful by yourself.

Apparently, "Rich Mitt RoMONEY" has has ALOT of help to become successful. Not only did he have parents that were "Cashed UP" enough to send him to the best "Private Schools," but there were administrators more than willing to turn a blind eye to little "Mitten's" devious ways, amp up his grades and well, promote him above his "peers."

Romney is a SWANK. Vote RoMONEY and Ryan "Med-i-care-less" for 2012. Two "Bobble-Heads"; one whose fickle politics are nothing but mired in hoopla Republicant's "Brew-Ha-Ha" and the other too obsessed with himself to even give half a damn to anyone outside his social circle, let alone anyone over the age of 60. The average age of members of congress is what, 59.5? Let's call it, 60. Ryan's "fix" for the deficit? Good to go by 2030!

Last election, McCain chose Palin. Right-Bangers were in a frenzy! McCain the "War Hero". (And yes, I acknowledge that Senator McCain IS a "War Hero" and ALWAYS will be.) No argument there. He is my hero. But Palin? The "gifted" sweetheart? Lord! And then, she spoke...and it was all over.

Now, this election has "RoMONEY" who can't make a decision either way..."bobble-head." And for his running mate? Another "pretty." But pretty (or beauty) is in the eye of the beholder. To most? Ryan is the "shallow" pretty; which isn't pretty at all. More like plastic, really. Self-centered and thinks that the "elderly" need to just, move on, so to speak.

In the end, I think the Repube's will think, way back deep in their "tea-bagged" minds, that maybe...they should have listened more closely to and ran with, Ron Paul.

Why didn't the Tea-Baggers listen to Ron Paul? Because he is for "Controlling Federal Spending and lowering the deficit."

To all you Republican't supporters, you chose, "Unwisely." A lot of "Diadems" would have, "Jumped the Trunk." But alas, you phucked up again. You shallow, plastic, money miser, "go with the pretty", religious screwed, bobble-headed loving, mired in "repbubed quick-sand", war monger, @!$%#$...you are lost. And there is no hope for you. Just ask all the "Chick-fil-A" fat bodies stuffing their already fat bellies who they want to put their trust in; slim-trim, Ryan. Not so much Mittens. But since they are joined together at the hip, sure, why not?

They obviously aren't smart enough to drive cars, go to doctors, enter federal building, buy alcohol or cigarettes, apply for credit or any other of a number of things that require some form of ID either.

Not a matter of "smart", more a matter of ability and opportunity. Not everyone drives, or is able to drive, or can afford a car. Lots of people do not buy alcohol or cigarettes. Going to a doctor might require an insurance card, but not any other form of ID. Applying for credit requires a SSN, not a drivers license. Publicly accessible Federal buildings do not require IDs, Federal buildings that do require IDs require special IDs for employees. Insurance cards, Social Security cards, employee IDs, student IDs were not allowed for "voter ID", no, the only IDs acceptable for voting were drivers licenses and gun licenses and other forms of IDs that are biased to favor the wealthy Conservatives over the less well-off seniors, students, and working poor. In some cases, the law was written to make it expensive or time-consuming to obtain the right sort of ID.

In short, the Republicans built-in a strong bias favoring themselves in these "voter ID" laws, using the fig-leaf excuse of "voter fraud", even though there is remarkably little voter fraud and their law doesn't go after the most common types of voter frauds.

Actions and dollars donated speak volumes. Obama has lost momentum. His favors carry no weight anymore... Will be fun to watch the "change" unfold...

Just like this blog and Fiesty's insider connections...they reach a point of obvious disingenuous connection... Real folks and hard work shine through...connections and arrogance lay by the road side...

Nevada-Brett - Don't like your politics but I LOVE the photo! Please, you actually believe Romney isn't going to destroy the country?

And, your link - you know it isn't legit - just right wing propaganda!

Get Real - President Obama is still getting a lot of money from small donors. But, when the richest corporations and Saudi's contribute to Romney, he's not going to match it. Doesn't matter, he'll still get the vote!

Seeking - likewise re. your politics. Romney seeks the betterment of our country, which I do not believe Obama can achieve. Obama is only in this for his personal gain, for his legacy as a president. I gave him a chance, he failed, and now it's time for someone else. My father, who worked with the Obama campaign here in NV in '08, won't be voting for Obama either this time around. Even he, once a hardcore Obama fan, sees Obama for who he really is.

Thanks re. my photo, but what's to love about it?

While the President keeps on saying that Mitt ROmney and Paul Ryan are good men with beautiful families, They, in exchange, keep INSULTING THE PRESIDENT WITH ANY KIND OF INSULTS THAT THEIR ARROGANCE allows them.

I would JUST PUT A MIRROR TO THEIR FACES EVERY TIME THEY TALK.They hate the President at the personal level. AND IT SHOWS!!!!

You know this for a fact? Couldn't be that Obama is a big government, tax and spend kinda guy? It couldn't be that Obama is the kind of guy who thinks that all life begins and ends with the government in control? Small business only exists because the government exists? Really?

So sorry, Obama may be a charming fellow in person, he may be a funny guy, witty, urbane, etc. However, as the leader of America he sucks.

@GetReal (#3.12) -

No. What it really means is, Willard is not capable of raising all the money he's spending on his own via the traditional, everyday citizen donations.

However, I guess your narrow view of the world around you does not allow you to see pass the tunnel.

Neither...You only need to see the way that the GOP talks about this President. NEVER before there was so much disrespect and display of total ignorance for all his accomplishments.

NEVER the President gets a nice, friendly comment from Mitt ROmney or Paul Ryan. The President constantly praises them, regardless of the differences.

Why will Liberals vote again for Mr. Obama ?

Here are a few items which were compiled from various un-disclosed,
un-named, anonymous, news/opinion site sources (quickly learned tactic from the Obama administration and Senior Democratic leaders) for you to consider:

(NOTE: sorry for short story, just mirroring the Liberal's lengthy posts)

    Transparency.

    1. Mr. Obama pledged that transparency would be a top priority in his administration. However, his administration has refused to grant one-third of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
    2. Health Care negotiations were not televised on C-SPAN, legislation was not provided online for five days for public review, and closed door back-room deals were the norm, (commonly known as Cornhusker Kickback, Louisiana Purchase, and Health Care companies wheeling and dealing).
    3. A FOIA request was required to obtain the White House visitors log after the White House's refusal to release the information. Special "visitor" on numerous occasions was SEIU Trumpka whose "Agenda is Obama's agenda". And, this administration is still fighting in court against rulings that would grant the public a legal right to such data.
    4. To counter FOIA requests, the DHS has ordered, since July 2009, "career employees to provide political staffers with information about the people who asked for records — such as where they lived and whether they were private citizens or reporters — and about the organizations where they worked".
    5. Yep, Mr. Obama fulfilled his promise of a Transparent administration.

    ObamaCare.

    1. During his presidential campaign, Obama indicated that his mother died of cancer after being denied coverage for a pre-existing condition. Her image was used in a campaign ad, repeated the claim in debates, and used the same rhetoric as President when selling ObamaCare to the American people. However, it has been reported that Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, had health insurance through her employer and was only denied disability insurance. And, Mrs. Obama claimed that Mr. Obama's mother was discriminated against at a bank in Hawaii when in fact, she was the first female to be selected to a top banking position.
    2. Obama pledged during his campaign and throughout his presidency not to raise taxes on families making less than $250,000. ObamaCare’s mandate (TAX) will be on all Americans not having health insurance coverage. And the TAX will be administered by the IRS which routinely gives out BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars to Illegal Aliens (Immigrants).
    3. Mr. Obama repeatedly pledged that under his health care measure, Americans would be able to keep their doctors. However, many employers will cut their health care plans and force workers into the state health care exchanges. A survey indicated that more than 30%
of companies will discontinue coverage for their workers. Further, about 3,000,000 individuals will not be covered under ObamaCare. when ObamaCare's target was health care for ALL Americans.
    4. Cut Medicare/Medicare Advantage by $ 714,000,000,000 to use that money to support ObamaCare. How is that working for you, Liberal Medicare (Senior) Advantage subscribers ?
    5. Yep, ObamaCare is going to do wonders for American's healthcare.

    Stimulus.

    1. $ 787,000,000,000 (CBO revised to $ 814,000,000,00) stimulus package for shovel-ready construction jobs and keep the unemployment at or below 8%. Mr. Obama later admitted that “There’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects.” while Mr. Biden later stated that the Stimulus was a failure. Most "Stimulus Go Green" payback programs failed and the companies went BANKRUPT.
    2. Total cost for ALL Stimulus/Bail-Out initiatives: $ 2,800,000,000,000 and the economy remains stagnant and the unemployment rate is outrageous.
    3. Yep, Mr. Obama's Stimulus worked and saved the World from a depression.

    Government Motors.

    1. The American taxpayers still own about 28% of GM stock. The Secretary of the Treasury indicated recently that $ 25,000,000,000 still owed to the American taxpayers will be LOST. However, that didn't stop GM from giving out bonuses to their UNION WORKERS. A UAW official told members that eligible members of unions representing General Motors would be receiving a $1,000 bonus (reported 6 June 2012).
    2. GM currently is mired in pension/health care debt at the tune of $ 134,000,000,000 to Union retirees and is trying to "offset" the debt by giving retiring Union workers LUMP SUM offers. Sort of sounds like UPS.
    3. Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Treasury was instrumental in TERMINATING about 20,000 NON-Union Delphi employee's pensions.
    4. Recent profits have fallen 41% because of "slow" European sales.
    5. Yep, Mr. Obama saved the auto industry and the Unions.

    Lobbyists.

    1. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Obama said: “We have the chance to tell all those corporate lobbyists that the days of them setting the agenda in Washington are over. I don't take a dime of their money, and when I am President, they won't find a job in my White House.” At least a dozen former lobbyists received top jobs in his administration at the beginning of his presidency. Further, Mr. Obama administration was granting waivers to lobbyists to circumvent the ban. Yep, he has dozens of Ex-Wall Street "Fat Cats" (particularly Ex-Goldman Sachs) in his administration helping draft financial regulations.
    2. Yep, Mr. Obama's administration is squeaky clean.

    Immigration.

    1. Mr. Obama said of the Arizona Immigration Law: “Now suddenly if you don’t have your papers and you took your kid out to get ice cream, you can be harassed, that’s something that could potentially happen.” Actually the law would allow law enforcement officials to inquire about immigration status only when there is suspicion of a crime being committed.
    2. Approximately 800,000 Illegal Aliens (Immigrants) children allowed to remain in the U.S. for two years. Compliments of a "new" DHS regulation bypassing Congressional procedures and hits on "unconstitutional". Expect the White House to increase this number prior to the election.
    3. Yep, Mr. Obama's "I don't need Congress to get my agenda pushed through" is really working.

    Leaks.

    1. Disclosed details of the Navy SEAL team that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and collaborating sensitive information with Bollywood to produce a movie of the attack.
    2. Disclosed U.S. cyber warfare against Iran' nuclear facility.
    3. Disclosed procedures and "hit list" for targeting militants for drone attacks.
    4. Disclosed existence of a double agent who penetrated a militant group in Yemen.
    5. Disclosed airfield to be used by Israel for possible Iran nuclear facility attack.
    6. Yep, Mr. Obama's administration is looking out for the safety of our brave men and women in uniform and International allies and
      contacts.

    Terrorists.

    1. Mr. Obama promised to close Guantanamo Bay(Gitmo). It remains open.
    2. Three people convicted of terror-related offenses after 9/11 were given U.S. citizenship later, outraging Rep. Steve King, the Republican chairman of the House subcommittee that deals with immigration. “It’s outrageous that you can have people under your very nose and adjudicate them through the process and convict them and then turn around and grant them citizenship,”.....
    3. An Iraqi court has rejected a request to send a Hezbollah commander (Ali Mussa Daqduq ) to the United States for trial, a decision that likely ends the Obama administration's push to prosecute the Lebanese militant held in Iraq for the 2007 killings of five American soldiers. But the July 30 decision by the Iraqi central criminal court, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, ordered Daqduq be freed immediately. It also makes it clear that Iraq believes the legal case against him is over.
    4. Yep, Mr. Obama is taking are of those terrorists.

    Failed International Policies.

    • Coming to a Newsvine blog soon.

No, I am not going to provide links to the above. You Liberals are smart and have a computer ith Internet access, so you can search the comments yourself.

Yep, Mr. Obama was not ready for a 1st term and is certainly not ready for a 2nd term. pparently his On-the-Job-Training went completely over his head.

I wish you could make a short list of failures but you are missing failed energy policies, this is why Obama is desperate to run from his record and attack Ryan's plan for Medicare.

I said before and say it again, I do not care what Romney did with his money is his money, I care what Obama is doing with our money , my money and the trillions of dollars he is adding to our debt to fake a economic recovery even that we are far from a recovery, we are stuck in the mob and our debt is growing.

Romney has spent less because he can't legally spend general election contributions until he is formally the nominee. He's been outraising Mr. Obama now three months in a row. Once he accepts the Republican nomination at the convention he will be able to freely spend the money he's been squirrelling away.

Mr. Obama is getting far fewer small donations this election cycle. He isn't a very inspiring politician. His supporters, even here, are unable to create a positive narrative for him which would encourage people to vote for him, and are left with the only tactic that could work--at it may work, though I hope not--which is to paint Mr. Romney as an unacceptable alternative. If Romney can get that message out to enough moderates and independents--I agree with the claim above that he will have a hard time getting democrats to abandon ship--then he wins. Ir Mr. Obama is successful at portraying Romney as some extreme racist who hates the poor, the women, and the elderly, then Mr. Obama wins.

This race is one of the least complex ever. I don't know why people have so much trouble grasping what is happening, or why.

If Romney is outspending Obama, then he needs to get a better campaign team. If money equates votes, according to the polls, he's not getting his money's worth.

On the other hand, how does Obama expect to get wealthy to spend thousands of dollars on fundraisers when he publically trashes them on a regular basis?

Mr. Romney, where are your tax returns...but in particular, where is 2009?

Since you've already released 2010 and are busy finalizing 2011, which you've promised to release just before Election Day, that places 2009 next in queue.

2009. There just seems to be something about THAT PARTICULAR YEAR.

    I agree that it makes no sense to release 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, and
    2002,
EVEN IF THEY'RE SQUEAKY CLEAN, if that pesky little 2009 remains your TRUE ACHILLES HEEL.

So you stand in defense of them ALL when you're probably standing in defense of JUST ONE: 2009.

It’s already sounding a whole lot like Nixon and the Watergate tapes.

At first Mr. Nixon hemmed and hawed about the threat to presidential authority,
claiming executive privilege. Privilege…as in Ann’s “We’ve given YOU PEOPLE all that you’re going to get.” Still, the press was unrelenting.

Then, after releasing heavily redacted transcripts of most of the tapes, Dick posited
that releasing any more would pose a threat to national security. “Redacted”…the
equivalent of “amended,” a term now synonymous with Mitt Romney. Now Congress became seriously interested.

Nixon’s next move was to release additional tapes but curiously not that of June 23. Why NOT June 23? The Supreme Court intervened, requiring that he do so, post haste.

After all was said and done, it came down to the June 23 tape, the now infamous “smoking gun”.

Is the 2009 tax return your “smoking gun,” Mitt?

You got caught in 2009, didn't you. Caught under-reporting or even failing to report earned income in 2008 from overseas investment accounts, a felony violation of the United States Tax Code. The IRS, to their discredit, offered you amnesty as they did so many that year, if only to avoid the expense of protracted litigation...and you jumped at the chance.

Having been caught and having no recourse but to file an amended 2009 tax return in
which you accepted penalties in exchange for relief from criminal prosecution, your amended return miraculously brought you back into that 13% effective range, upon which you now seek to hang your hat.

You paid 13% in 2009, but only AFTER you were threatened with criminal prosecution
for felony tax evasion. You received amnesty, but the fact is your actions were
    felonious nonetheless.

So, forever parsing your words, the latest protestation is that you "…never paid less than 13% in taxes."

You don't deserve to be our President. Heck, you don't deserve to be much of
anything at all, and the only remaining question is:

“What did you actually pay in taxes for 2008 and when did you actually pay it?”

Ann has done you in, Mitt. I had grown weary of the debate until her interview with Natalie Morales. So too, I suspect, had quite a few people.

Now I'm in it for the long haul.

You can thank your wife for that.

I think you misread the article, or someone's reply to it. Mr. Romney is not outspending Mr. Obama. But the PACs which favor Romney are wildly outspending those which favor Obama. Some of this isn't good spending. The ads about Mr. Obama's heritage come to mind of the sort of ads which might actually help the person they intend to hurt.

Still, if you throw in the dollar value of ALL media, movies, music, TV, radio, print, which paints Mr. Obama or Mr. Romney more favorably than the other, then at this point in the race Mr. Obama has likely exceeded campaign spending of the $1 billion range. Mr. Romney gets help from talk radio and a sliver of TV and print, but the lion's share goes to Mr. Obama.

I think that after the bruising primary, which Mr. Obama obviously didn't have to compete in, that Mr. Romney is doing just about right. He's either slightly ahead, or slightly behind, depending on the poll sample used. Challengers should always be losing until much later in the race.

Well, we realize that the vine and NBC are strongly pro-Obama. I read an article on HuffPo about Corzine and Holder's non-prosecution and investigation of that criminal and then read the comments, almost every comment was anti-Obama. Intelligent liberals realize that zero prosecutions of Wall Street malfeasance under Obama is not exactly a good thing. There were several hundred under Bush, ditto Clinton, and under Obama? Zip, zero, nada.

    Rich,

I read your post # 3.42 and found it quite reasonable. Even though you may be on the other side of the political fence from me, I found the tone of your post refreshing for a change. The absence of name calling and the use of the polite forms of expression such as Mr. Romney and Mr. Obama to refer to the candidates was a sight for sore eyes in this time of such vicious political division.

      #3.45 - Fri Aug 17, 2012 9:34 AM EDT

      Hey Mickey,

Don't worry. I'll tell no one of this political apostasy! And to be fair, I often go off the rails myself. I'd like to be able to say that it's only in response to some kind of nasty and hateful rant by my political opponents, but the fact remains that I am the one typing, so it's my responsibility.

I don't think the political division today is really any worse than ever. Bob Beckel makes the same claim, so there's a fair chance I am wrong, but I think it's always been politically ugly. My worry, and it may be yours too, is that what the left and the right see in our national future is so wildly different that even if we were able to get along better we'd still stand little chance of any kind of compromise. What I mean is that, and there are many exceptions on both sides to be fair, I don't see the left as having America's best interests at heart, and the left thinks the same about me and the right.

We are, in a real sense I think, proving Kant's point. The center cannot hold. All great nations have gone through this too. After they have achieve hegemonic greatness they begin to consume themselves. I hope that in a hundred years or so, should we make it even that far, that we are more like the UK (still marginally powerful and influential) than Spain, which is, but for their need of charity today, virtually irrelevant to the world (not the people, but the government).

The unfortunate fact is that we don't have to go this way, but that we have chosen to.

      Rich,

"We are, in a real sense I think, proving Kant's point. The center cannot hold."

Yes, I agree with you on many things, but as for the center not holding, you may be thinking of that poem by William Butler Yeates:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
      The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
      Are full of passionate intensity.
      Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Frankly, I don't remember Kant saying such a thing, but I am not an expert at his writings, so you could be right.

It's like watching the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon...show me those magic numbers!!!

        OUTSIDE MONEY
Pro-Romney: $205 million (86% of all outside money going to boost Romney)
Pro-Obama: $33 million (14% of all outside money going to boost Obama)
Total: $238 million (47% of all money spent on ads this general election)

        % FROM OUTSIDE GROUPS
Team Romney: 75% (of Team Romney’s ads are from outside groups)
        Team Obama: 14%

Once again, another round of applause for the Kangaroo Supreme Court!!!

How about in the future we work on making those numbers "0"?

In 2008, total spending from outside of the campaigns themselves totaled $182M. Now Mr. Romney's got 3 SuperPACs spending almost that much on their own and we're not even in September...

Crossroads - $105 million (GPS $59 million, American $46 million)
Americans for Prosperity - $42 million

Both of them think that the poor, old and disabled are taking space in this country that belongs to someone else, and they are ready to kick them off the cliff.

Unless you belong to the 1%, you are only acting like SHEEP for them. I can't wait for all those old farts that are Republican, and overweight. When they show up at the hospital for a bypass, and they are SENT HOME because they can't afford the surgery. BUT THEY KEEP VOTING REPUBLICAN.

        Da Noid,

It unfortunately is a democracy, as that money had to come out of someones pocket and that was their choice. The fact that they are rich or that it has been pooled into a very large mass does not mean that individuals did not make a decision to invest in the outcome they wanted. The very same types of people are investing in Obama and his support appendages, but at a slower pace than his opponent this time.

My point was simple though. In 2008 Obama supporters did not mind, as it made him look so superior, and aided in his election. But this time, not so much, and that bugs them. I actually agree with you, but wonder if you had the same outrage 4 years ago when the benefit favored Obama.

        @in the middle (#4.10) -

Corporations are not your average wealthy donors.

Blame the replubicans for not doing there jobs in the last 4 years instead of fighting with the pres. They did not have any answers or comprimises to any bill that they fought against and they still do not. The republicans are only concerned about not raising the 1% taxes. They did nothing except make sure the 1% did not get there taxes raised. If Romey gets in office he will be the puppet for all the other republicans in office. He has no platform of his own and will be a yes man if in office.

        from womenarewatching.org

Ryan voted to end funding for Planned Parenthood, which could jeopardize access to cancer screenings, birth control, and other preventive care that nearly three million Americans rely on each year.

      • He wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending safe and legal abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or when a woman’s life is at risk.

      • He co-sponsored an extreme and dangerous “personhood” bill which could ban some forms of birth control and fertility treatments.

      • The Ryan budget plan, his signature piece of legislation, would dismantle Medicaid, jeopardizing basic health care for millions of women and families. For many, this could mean the difference between getting cancer screenings and birth control or going without.

      • Repeatedly, he has tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would restrict women’s access to birth control and preventive health care services, and allow insurance companies to discriminate against women and charge more for coverage than men.

      • Obama/Biden 2012.....Protect women's rights!

Ryan plan gives more tax breaks for the rich like removing taxes on capital gains. Ryan takes away food stamps from starving Children to pay for those tax breaks. Ryan plan takes benefits from veterans to pay for those tax breaks. Taking food out of the mouths of children whose parents lost their jobs, homes, savings, and cannot get a job that pays enough to feed the family. Middle class wages dropped dramatically because of the greedy rich crashing the economy. Ryan taking food from children and families to have Romney buy another dancing horse!

Not sure which one I will vote for and but think that they both suck and the money being wasted on the election could help the poor that are having housing problems and problems feeding their children. The following are 40 ways that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are essentially the same candidate....

            1. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both supported TARP.

            2. Mitt Romney supported Barack Obama's "economic stimulus" packages.

            3. Mitt Romney says that Barack Obama's bailout of the auto industry was actually his idea.

            4. Neither candidate supports immediately balancing the federal budget.

            5. They both believe in big government and they both have a track record of being big spenders while in office.

            6. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both fully support the Federal Reserve.

            7. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are both on record as saying that the president should not question the "independence" of the Federal Reserve.

            8. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have both said that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke did a good job during the last financial crisis.

            9. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both felt that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke deserved to be renominated to a second term.

            10. Both candidates oppose a full audit of the Federal Reserve.

            11. Both candidates are on record as saying that U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has done a good job.

            12. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have both been big promoters of universal health care.

            13. Mitt Romney was the one who developed the plan that Obamacare was later based upon.

            14. Wall Street absolutely showers both candidates with campaign contributions.

            15. Neither candidate wants to eliminate the income tax or the IRS.

            16. Both candidates want to keep personal income tax rates at the exact same levels for the vast majority of Americans.

            17. Both candidates are "open" to the idea of imposing a Value Added Tax on the American people.

            18. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both believe that the TSA is doing a great job.

            19. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both supported the NDAA.

            20. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both supported the renewal of the Patriot Act.

            21. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both believe that the federal government should be able to indefinitely detain American citizens that are considered to be terrorists.

            22. Both candidates believe that American citizens suspected of being terrorists can be killed by the president without a trial.

            23. Barack Obama has not closed Guantanamo Bay like he promised to do, and Mitt Romney actually wants to double the number of prisoners held there.

            24. Both candidates support the practice of "extraordinary rendition".

            25. They both support the job-killing "free trade" agenda of the global elite.

            26. They both accuse each other of shipping jobs out of the country and both of them are right.

            27. Both candidates are extremely soft on illegal immigration.

            28. Neither candidate has any military experience. This is the first time that this has happened in a U.S. election since 1944.

            29. Both candidates earned a degree from Harvard University.

            30. They both believe in the theory of man-made global warming.

            31. Mitt Romney has said that he will support a "cap and trade" carbon tax scheme (like the one Barack Obama wants) as long as the entire globe goes along with it.

            32. Both candidates have a very long record of supporting strict gun control measures.

            33. Both candidates have been pro-abortion most of their careers. Mitt Romney's "conversion" to the pro-life cause has been questioned by many. In fact, Mitt Romney has made millions on Bain Capital's investment in a company called "Stericycle" that incinerates aborted babies collected from family planning clinics.

            34. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both believe that the Boy Scout ban on openly gay troop leaders is wrong.

            35. They both believe that a "two state solution" will bring lasting peace between the Palestinians and Israel.

            36. Both candidates have a history of nominating extremely liberal judges.

            37. Like Barack Obama, Mitt Romney also plans to add "signing statements" to bills when he signs them into law.

            38. They both have a horrible record when it comes to job creation.

            39. Both candidates believe that the president has the power to take the country to war without getting the approval of the U.S. Congress.

            40. Both candidates plan to continue running up more government debt even though the U.S. government is already 16 trillion dollars in debt.

If you're a republican delegate please consider this and vote for Ron Paul... if Romney becomes the GOP nominee then vote for Gary Johnson. Do not give any votes to these other 2 degenerates.

Now really can Romney buy your vote if you're a Democrat?. I don't care if he spends 2 Billion on his campaigning this would change my vote, I'm not voting for someone that Pledged to a private organization (Norqist) where would his loyalty be?. We are talking about a person that has made his decision to put America and it's citizens second just like all those GOP Congressman did, these guy's won't be happy until the American citizen labor is as cheap as CHINA, yea $1.25 an hour !!

How about using the European system where each candidate is assigned a set amount and equal airtime? If this was applied Obama would have had a much harder time getting re-elected as Romney and his paymasters couldn't have bought his nomination.

In a way I'm glad he got the nomination tho as it virtually guarantees the party that tells the "real" truth will get in.

They take things totally out of context that President Obama says. They are against things that, in the past, they were actually FOR....what a bunch of hypocrites!! It's beyond me how ANYONE could even consider voting for them.....don't they read the papers. These two are going to get rid of your Medicare and Medicaid.....may sound good to you now, but wait until you really need it. Then, you can thank the wonderful GOP!!!

If the Republicans would have did there jobs in the last 4 years instead of fighting the leader of the country and the dems more would have gotten done to help Americans. Instead the republicans ran away from any democratic ideas and had none of there own. They just bad mouthed everything and had no answers. Elect the replubicans for not doing there jobs in the last 4 years. Real smart.

Repubs creating voter suppression laws across the country for their leader Karl Rove. Rove bragged if they can remove just 1% of voters in 9 states the repubs can win the election. Studies show there is no voter id fraud. Repubs also add more suppression in their bills by removing voting places, changing registration hrs, and changes to how soon new registration cards have to be turned in with criminal charges attached if late. Repubs don't want senior voting who would protect their Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. They don't want students and young voting, repubs don't want the middle class and poor voting. Why? Because repubs want all the money they didn't get when they crashed the economy the first time.

If you take SCOTUS and Citizens United plus Romney's claims to their logical conclusion that "companies are people too" then every company should pay tax based on US citizens personal tax rates not the ideal rates they get at the moment ;)

Of course companies only want to be people when they can buy elections, and not when they have to pay taxes ;)

              He has 15 Internet outlets.

I am suprised the GOP has to spend so much since they think they are so pure and great and claim the American People love them so much, especially after all their leaders including Rush Limbaugh at the beginning of Obama's term what was it old Rush declared for all of their hatred of Democrats (that is hate for more than 50% of the USA population) "I hate to say this but I hope he fails as president no matter what it does to the country..." yep GOP plan to get back in power per interpreting Rush/McConnel/Gingrich/Tea Party is to sink the ship of the whole country by killing job growth after they knew the American People had enough of 8 years of Bush/Cheney and 6 years of their total control 2001-2006!!!!! It is the Old Rich Racist White Man's Last Stand we are going through.

Obama has increased the national debt more in 3.6 years than his predecessor did in 8. It would be more accurate to say Obama has done more TO our country in 4 years than Bush did in 8.

Is it better for businessmen to be giving money than for Hollywood stars to be going to $43,000 a plate dinners to talk directly with Obama? Obama has never given leaders of Congress from the Republican party that access. Both Reagan and Clinton did. What about his promise to reach out across the aisle? His first meeting with Repubs after being elected he stated "I won, you lost. Now we do things my way". Now that is really reaching out. We wonder why the other side does not like to work with him.

Denverrrrrrrrr..........Obama never gave repub leaders a chance to talk directly??????...ahahahahahaha The whole nation watched President Obama several years ago take on the whole repub congress on national tv and President Obama with a debate.....He floored everyone of them asking for ideas before the whole nation and debated their plans. He even had their ideas written in bills that the repubs then blocked themselves....what a fake rant......Over and over the President was on tv asking for compromise on any issue. The issue was repubs pledged to obstruct every bill just to make President Obama a one term president.......

What about his promise to reach out across the aisle?

He got sick of the Republicans biting his hand every time he extended it out.

They weren't biting his hand, they were dodging the club held in his hand. My way or the highway: the Obama motto. He bitch-slapped them and then got all prissy and claimed they weren't being cooperative. Who was it that stated that the republicans could sit in the back since HE was the one driving?

All Politicians are nothing more than Political Puppets. Every move they make is controlled by the Lobbyist, Special Interest, and the Self Righteous.

Half of all money raised by Politicians (Including Super PAC’S) should go towards the National Debt , Health Care Fund, and Charity. Why don't we "Tax" the Millions of dollars that they collect for their Campaigns?

They should also pay for their own Security out of these Campaign Funds.

CubsFan - Chicago is not alone in what you think of as corruptness. WALL STREET is NOT in Chicago, so think twice before bashing Chicago. Wall Street brought this whole recession/depression nightmare down on us all. I'm from Chicago, and a person's home town is just like your family - you can talk about it, but I better not hear anyone else slamming it. Be kind or we'll kick your butt out : )

A - Wallstreet is not Chicago politicians.

B - Much of the recession was caused by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. There were warning signs and the finance committie (mainly Barnie Frank) ignored them and stated they were wrong.

C- Why did Geithner allow bailout corporations to pay or huge bonus' with bailout money? He could easily have said you want the money they no bonus'. If they were bankrupt, those execs. would not have gotten a bonus.

Seeking Sanity, you need to hit the books again..The GOP was begging the Dems to stop the banks, all during Bush's two terms..

You can't get your education on the alphabet news. You have to research as well. You had the Dems in the Senate and House the last four of Bush and I might add, you had Senator Obama.. You had the same the first two years of barry's reign. Please listen up and find the truth.. BO has had four years to turn this around and he has not brought the Country our of this mess. He himself said when he was running for office..."If I can't fix the economy in four years I will be a one term President". Van Jones said a couple of weeks ago that we had to hit a forty million jobs loss before it could be turned around.. That is insanity. These figures have not been this bad since the great depression. Wake up people...

Jean...everything you said was false. Repubs have committed record obstruction...hell they even obstructed healthcare for 911 responders. Obstruct everything to make President Obama a one term president. Romney Ryan openly say less banking regulations......Fer Christ sakes.....

Competition among financial institutions has been reduced dramatically in the past 4 years, with the average size of these companies increasing 175% despite Obama's pledge to reduce average financial institution size It should be of no surprise that among Barak Obama's top 20 campaign contributors, 5 are financial institutions. (Also of note, 4 are law firms and 1 is the largest tax evader in the United States - General Electric). Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, UBS, and Morgan Stanley are all active supporters of President Obama, the targets of anti-Wall Street populism, recievers of bailout money, and have grown market share significantly in the past 4 years.
